Steroids are man-made versions of hormones that are normally produced by the adrenal glands, 2 small glands found above each kidney. They reduce redness and swelling (inflammation) and help to treat autoimmune conditions, such as rheumatoid arthritis and lupus, which are caused by the immune system mistakenly attacking healthy tissue.
