Straight-cut gears are an interesting alternative to traditional gearbox setups, usually only used in racing applications. Known for its distinctive squeal and inherent lack of usability, this is a transmission setup that most of us will never get our hands on.
The main advantage of using straight-cut gears is that they do not generate axial loads. This "thrust" is produced by sliding contact between the teeth of the helical gear. This lateral force is applied to the transmission's input shaft, which then converts to the drive shaft in a front-wheel drive configuration. This greatly limits the amount of torque that can be applied through the gear before other components fail.
Thus, spur gears effectively allow a larger powertrain to be placed in the vehicle without risking the output shaft and other bearings tearing themselves apart, resulting in a greater safety factor within the transmission itself.
Straight-cut drives are inherently more efficient than helical gear drive systems. The axial loads created by the helical gears only reduce the output energy of the transmission while increasing friction and therefore energy loss through heat.
Straight-cut gears are also easier to assemble and have less catastrophic failure when they go wrong due to their simple construction. Heavy gearboxes and shafts have to be used with helical gears to handle the extra-axial loads, so spur gears save weight, which is very important in motorsport.
