Chlamydia is a common sexually transmitted infection (STI) that can cause problems in your reproductive system. Here are the three most common myths about chlamydia, and the truth behind them.
MYTH: Chlamydia only affects women.
FACT: In fact, chlamydia can affect both men and women. It's most commonly spread through sexual contact, but it can also be passed from mother to child during pregnancy or childbirth.
MYTH: Chlamydia is a mild disease and can be treated with over-the-counter medication.
FACT: If left untreated, chlamydia can lead to serious complications, including pelvic inflammatory disease (PID), infertility, and even death in some cases. Treatment with antibiotics is often required.
