Starting a food business in India? Whether you own a restaurant, a food manufacturing unit, or an online food delivery service, obtaining an FSSAI License is one of the most important legal steps you need to take. It ensures that your food business follows the safety and quality standards set by the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI). In this guide, we’ll walk you through the entire process of applying for an FSSAI license in India, including types, eligibility, required documents, and the application steps.

What is an FSSAI License?

An FSSAI License is a mandatory certification for all food businesses in India. It serves as proof that the food you produce, distribute, or sell meets hygiene and quality standards. The license is issued by the FSSAI (Food Safety and Standards Authority of India), which regulates food safety and hygiene practices nationwide.

Who Needs an FSSAI License?

If your business is involved in any of the following activities, you must apply for an FSSAI license:

  • Food manufacturing and processing units

  • Restaurants, cafes, and cloud kitchens

  • Food importers and exporters

  • Food storage, packaging, and distribution businesses

  • Online food sellers (Swiggy, Zomato, Amazon, etc.)

  • Dairy and meat processing units

  • Retail food vendors and grocery stores

  • Catering businesses and food franchises

Types of FSSAI Licenses

FSSAI offers three types of licenses based on business size and turnover:

1. Basic FSSAI Registration

  • For small food businesses with an annual turnover of up to ₹12 lakh.

  • Ideal for home-based food sellers, petty food retailers, and small manufacturers.

  • Issued by the local FSSAI authority.

2. State FSSAI License

  • Required for medium-sized food businesses with a turnover between ₹12 lakh and ₹20 crore.

  • Suitable for mid-sized restaurants, food manufacturers, storage units, and processing units.

  • Issued by the State FSSAI Authority.

3. Central FSSAI License

  • Mandatory for large-scale food businesses with a turnover above ₹20 crore.

  • Required by food exporters, importers, large food chains, and manufacturers.

  • Issued by the Central FSSAI Authority.
