Veterinary vs Human Use: Anti-Venom Market Segmentation
According to FutureWise analysis the market for anti-venom in 2023 was US$ 0.65 billion, and is expected to reach US$ 1.32 billion by 2031 at a CAGR of 9.1%.
Anti-venom, also referred to as antivenin, is a therapeutic treatment designed to counteract the effects of venom from specific animals when administered promptly after a snakebite or other venomous encounter. This treatment relies on purified antibodies that specifically target the components of venom. These antibodies are produced from animals that have been exposed to the venom through a controlled process.
The method of extracting venom differs based on the species. For instance, snakes and funnel-web spiders are usually milked to collect their venom using a specific technique. In contrast, venom from stonefish, redback spiders, and box jellyfish is often obtained through dissection, which can be a risky procedure. Immune animals are injected with small amounts of venom, with the dosage gradually increased as the animals develop a tolerance.
Anti-venoms are categorized into two main types: monovalent and polyvalent. Monovalent anti-venoms contain a specific volume of antibodies directed against one type of venom, which can help minimize the likelihood of adverse reactions. The effectiveness of treatments hinges on correctly identifying the specific snake species that caused the bite. These anti-venoms are produced by immunizing large animals, such as horses, with a single venom, enabling the resulting horse serum to neutralize that specific venom with minimal or no cross-reaction with others.
Polyvalent anti-venoms, on the other hand, contain a higher volume of antibodies and are designed to neutralize multiple venoms. They are developed through the immunization of animals with various snake venoms, allowing the serum to combat all the venoms used in its production, although this may lead to a higher reaction rate.
