Maintaining Peristaltic Pumps During Extended Storage Periods

Peristaltic pumps are precision instruments, and their tubing and rollers require special attention when not in use for extended periods. Long-term storage without proper maintenance can lead to flow inconsistencies, hose cracks, or motor damage.

Cleaning is the first step. Residual chemicals, fertilizers, or food-grade fluids can solidify or corrode tubing if left inside. Flush the system with a neutralizing solution if necessary, followed by deionized water. For food or pharmaceutical pumps, sterilization may be required to prevent bacterial growth.

Tube inspection and replacement is critical. Tubing made from silicone or PVC can harden or lose elasticity during storage. Even small deformations can affect the pump’s volumetric accuracy. Remove tubes from the pump if storage conditions are harsh or if the pump will remain idle for months. Rollers and guides should also be checked for signs of wear or misalignment.

Mechanical maintenance includes lubrication of bearings and moving parts, according to the manufacturer’s instructions. Avoid over-lubrication, which can attract dust or contaminate tubing. Inspect seals and gaskets for integrity and replace them if necessary.

Electrical and motor components should be protected from dust, moisture, and extreme temperatures. Disconnect power, remove batteries if present, and cover the pump with a dust-proof cover. If storing in a humid environment, consider using desiccants to absorb excess moisture.

Storage environment greatly affects pump longevity. Avoid sunlight and high temperatures, which can accelerate hose aging. Cold temperatures may cause some materials to become brittle. Ideal storage conditions are moderate temperature, low humidity, and protection from mechanical stress.

Finally, document all maintenance activities. Keeping a log of cleaning, lubrication, and inspections ensures the pump is ready for use and helps track the lifespan of consumable parts like tubing.

In summary, proper long-term storage of peristaltic pumps involves cleaning, hose inspection and replacement, lubrication, electrical protection, and controlled storage conditions. Following a systematic checklist preserves pump accuracy, reliability, and operational lifespan.
