Artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning are transforming industries across the globe. Businesses everywhere are buzzing about how these technologies can boost efficiency and decision-making. Among Microsoft’s many innovations, Copilot has taken center stage — designed to make every day work easier by automating repetitive tasks and providing smart insights.

This article takes a closer look at Copilot in Dynamics 365 Supply Chain Management (D365 SCM) as of January 2025. The focus here is specifically on supply chain–related capabilities rather than finance or Copilot Studio scenarios.

New Copilot Features in D365 Supply Chain Management

  • Confirmed Purchase Order Changes Workspace: This workspace helps you keep tabs on any delays in confirmed purchase orders and understand their ripple effects — like late sales or production orders.
  • Key Dependency: For the feature to give accurate results, make sure confirmed purchase order dates are updated at the line level before the workspace performs its analysis.
  • Practical Tip: If your vendors communicate reliably and keep order dates accurate, this workspace can be incredibly valuable. However, if dates are often incorrect or left unchanged, the insights it provides will be far less useful.

System Summaries

Copilot now offers concise summaries that give you quick, high-level insights across different areas of your system. These can include details about backordered customer orders, product pricing, and item variants.

You can view summaries in several places, such as:

  • Product hover (just hover over a released product)

  • Released Product Details

  • Vendor Summary

  • Purchase Order Summary

  • Workflow History Summary

Limitation: At the moment, these summaries aren’t customizable — something users have been asking Microsoft to improve in future releases.

Warehouse Application Insights

When you open the warehouse app, Copilot greets you with a personalized dashboard tailored to your upcoming shift. It shows important details like:

Total picking work IDs

  • Putaway lines to process

  • Replenishment tasks

  • Primary picking zone

  • Assigned warehouse

This feature helps warehouse workers stay organized and aware of their tasks right from the start of the day.

Copilot Sidecar

Think of the Copilot Sidecar as your smart assistant within Dynamics 365 Supply Chain Management. It works like an embedded Microsoft Learn search tool — ready to help you navigate or understand processes in real-time.

You can type natural questions like:

  • Show me how to navigate to the All Sales Orders form.

  • How do I find on-hand inventory balances?

Important Note: The Sidecar doesn’t access your company’s data, and sometimes it might suggest features that aren’t set up in your system yet. For example, it could point to a mobile app that hasn’t been configured — so take its suggestions with a pinch of caution.

Looking Ahead: Autonomous Agents

The most exciting part of Copilot’s roadmap lies in its upcoming autonomous agents. These AI-powered assistants will take productivity to a new level by automating more complex, time-consuming tasks. Two standout agents expected soon in D365 SCM include:

Supplier Communications Agent

This agent will monitor buyer emails and automatically detect changes that need to be made to purchase orders. Traditionally, such automation required Electronic Data Interchange (EDI), but Copilot can handle this just through email.

Benefits: It will streamline supplier communications and reduce manual order management work — no EDI required.

Challenges: Companies might be cautious at first, worrying about potential errors or unwanted changes. Building confidence in the agent’s accuracy will be key before businesses fully embrace it.

Time and Expense Agent

For consultants and project managers who juggle multiple tasks, this agent will be a real time-saver. It automatically drafts timesheets and expense reports, reducing the hassle of manual entries.

Final Thoughts on Copilot

There’s no denying it — AI agents like Copilot are reshaping how we work. They take the grunt work out of daily operations, freeing people to focus on strategy, innovation, and value-added activities.

However, it’s worth remembering a few practical points:

  • Hands-on Testing: These agents aren’t available for testing yet. For those who prefer to experiment before adopting new tools, patience will be needed.
  • Customization Control: You can disable summaries through Feature Management if they interfere with custom setups or ISV modifications.

Recommendation: Start using the current Copilot capabilities today to experience productivity gains right away. When the autonomous agents arrive, you’ll already be ahead of the curve — ready to leverage AI for even greater efficiency and competitive advantage.

Don’t wait to get started. Begin exploring Copilot in Dynamics 365 Supply Chain Management now and see how it can revolutionize your supply chain operations. Partnering with Dynamics 365 supply chain consulting services can help you implement and optimize these AI-driven features seamlessly. If you’re ready to enhance efficiency, reduce manual work, and future-proof your processes — now’s the perfect time to act.
