How the PgMP Certification Process Works

The PgMP journey starts with an application, but it is not a simple formality. PMI asks candidates to document project experience, program experience, and experience summaries tied to program strategy, governance, and leadership. Applicants may also be selected for an eligibility audit, in which case PMI requires supporting documentation such as proof of degree and certification or proof of project management experience.

A distinctive part of the PgMP path is the panel review. After payment, PMI states that a panel of volunteer PgMP-certified program managers assesses the candidate’s professional experience based on the PgMP panel assessment responses. Only after successfully completing this review can the candidate schedule the exam. That extra gate is one of the reasons PgMP is often seen as a more senior, experience-driven certification.
