Comb Generator for Routine EMC Site Validation from 1 GHz to 18 GHz

Routine validation helps an EMC laboratory identify changes in its radiated measurement environment before those changes affect test results. A stable reference signal can be used to check whether the antenna, cables, receiver and test site continue to produce readings consistent with previously recorded reference data.

The 1313-C250M18G Comb Generator is a compact radiated reference signal source designed for open-area test sites (OATS), semi-anechoic chambers (SAC), fully anechoic chambers (FAC) and other radiated EMC measurement environments.

It generates signals from 1 GHz to 18 GHz at 250 MHz intervals. During a routine check, the comb generator is placed in a defined position and measured using the laboratory’s established antenna position, test distance, polarization and receiver settings. Selected frequency readings can then be compared with the reference data.

If a significant difference appears, the laboratory can investigate possible changes in the measurement chain, such as cable condition, connector performance, antenna position, receiver settings or the chamber environment.

The 1313-C250M18G includes an integrated biconical antenna, combining the signal source and radiating element in one portable unit. This simplifies placement and reduces the number of separate components required during routine checks.

Battery operation eliminates the need to connect an external power cable while the generator is being used. This helps reduce the possibility of additional cable-related reflections inside the measurement environment. A fully charged battery provides more than five hours of typical operating time, while external LED indicators show the battery level and power status.

Key specifications include:

Frequency range: 1 GHz to 18 GHz
Frequency interval: 250 MHz
Frequency stability: 20 ppm
Amplitude stability: ±0.1 dB
Time stability: less than 1 dB over 12 months
Integrated biconical antenna
Typical battery operation: more than five hours
Dimensions: 12 × 12 × 11 cm
Weight: approximately 0.6 kg

Because the unit is compact and lightweight, it can be moved between different chambers or measurement sites without requiring a complex installation.

A comb generator check does not replace formal site validation or scheduled equipment calibration. It provides a practical intermediate check that helps laboratories monitor the repeatability of their radiated EMC measurement system and identify unexpected changes more quickly.
