What is jaundice in newborns?

When a newborn baby's skin, eyes, and mucous membranes turn yellow, it's known as newborn or neonatal jaundice. It is brought on by the blood having too much bilirubin. When red blood cells degrade, a yellow-colored pigment called bilirubin is produced.

Is a newborn's jaundice normal?

In the first week of life, up to 60% of babies may be affected by this illness. Few babies require medical intervention, and most cases resolve on their own.
