The term “Watergate scandal” is used to refer to the scandalous events that accompanied the presidential term of Nixon. In fact, it relates to the number of revealed abuses of power and illegal activities that have been undertaken by the members of the administration of the President. These activities were quite diverse and included such dirty methods as the bugging of the politicians’ offices. The violations that were committed by Nixon’s subordinates involved the intervention into the privacy, which is considered one of the most treasured values in the USA. Nixon as well as his peers initiated the investigations against the activists, politicians and other individuals that expressed alternative opinions or criticism of Nixon’s administration. The President used the resources of the CIA, FBI and IRS without any substantial cause in order to strengthen his powers and to ensure the order and peace within the country. Eventually, all these activities have been revealed and the President was impeached, what led to his resignation.

In my opinion, this story is quite disgusting considering the number of presidents in the history of the USA. Whereas some of personal scandals might be forgiven; the professional ones should definitely be analyzed and all the violators of the laws should be punished in accordance with the legislation. It should be stressed that the governmental order of the USA has been wisely designed by the framers of the Constitution. Yet, the presented scandal demonstrates vulnerability of the US political institutions and the possibility of usurpations. Obviously, Americans should be more careful and suspicious of their Presidents and evaluate all the decisions and actions undertaken by them.

Iran-Contra Affair is another political scandal that occurred in the USA during the presidency of Reagan. As revealed, the senior officials of Reagan’s administration were directly involved into the secret sale of weapons to Iran. The latter was under the trade and weapon embargo at that moment. While facilitating the trade the officials hoped to release some of the US hostages as well as to establish funds for the Contras in Nicaragua. The agreement provided that Iran would receive the arms and do everything to ensure the release of the hostages. The transfer of weapons was to be made in Israel and the money was expected to be then retrieved from Israel too. Obviously, the US officials both tried to release the hostages and get certain money remuneration. All these activities were either prohibited by the Congress or violated the state policies. The background of the conflict also involved the Reagan’s preoccupation with the spread of communism. The President was concerned about its success around the world and therefore he considered appropriate to take any steps to prevent it.

In my opinion, the presented conflict is less scandalous than the previous one as in this case the release of the hostages was undertaken too and that was, obviously, the only one positive feature of this event in history. This scandal also teaches that no goal can justify the means used for its achieving. Moreover, this situation also urges the analysts to always take context into consideration. The President’s concerns regarding communism were not directly related to the scandal in Iran. Yet, a more considered approach demonstrates the ties and helps to get necessary answers as well as to punish all those who are guilty of war and other crimes.
