  • Progesterone (PG) diminishes free radical damage and thus can afford protection against oxidative stress affecting the retina. The therapeutic use of PG is limited because it is a highly hydrophobic steroid hormone with very low solubility in water. This is the main drawback for the therapeutic application of PG at ocular level. The aims of this study were (i) to analyze if PG causes ocular irritation (ii) to validate a HPLC method to determine PG in ex vivo studies and (iii) to evaluate PG permeation through cornea and sclera. A high performance liquid chromatographic method was developed and validated to detect PG incorporated to β-cyclodextrin using a Waters Sunfire C18 (150 × 4.6 mm) reverse-phase column packed with 5 μm silica particles using a mobile phase consisted of a mixture of acetonitrile (ACN) and pure water 8020 (v/v), pH 7.4. The limit of detection and the limit of quantification for 50 μL injection of PG were found to be 0.42 and 1.26 μg/mL, respectively. The calibration curve showed excellent linearity over the concentration range (0.5 μg/mL to 100 μg/mL). As proof of concept, ex-vivo experiments to investigate PG permeation through cornea and sclera with vertical diffusion cells were carried out to quantify PG diffusion. Ex vivo experiments demonstrate its applicability to investigate permeation levels of PG from 6.57 ± 0.37 μg/cm2 at cornea and 8.13 ± 0.85 μg/cm2 sclera. In our previous work, chemical constituents in ZSS were profiled by ultra-high-performance liquid chromatography coupled with quadrupole time-of-flight tandem mass spectrometry (UHPLC/Q-TOF MS). Notably, characterization of substances in vivo was of great importance to reveal the therapy basis or mechanism in further work. Till now, there were few reports about in vivo substances' investigation of ZSS. In the present study, an integrated strategy contained represented compounds and diagnostic ions extraction was applied to characterize metabolism feature of ZSS in rats based on UHPLC/Q-TOF MS method. First, the metabolic information of four compounds (spinosin, isovitexin, jujuboside B, betulinic acid) featuring three representative chemical structures (flavonoids, saponins, terpenes) in ZSS was conducted, and their metabolism features were summarized, especially for flavonoid C-glycosides. Second, the absorbed compounds and representative compounds-related metabolites were quickly screened out; during this time, the diagnostic ions were sorted out. Last, with the help of diagnostic ions and summarized metabolic reactions, other metabolites were characterized. As a result, a total of 151 xenobiotics (58 prototypes and 93 metabolites) were identified or tentatively characterized in rats after ingestion of ZSS. Among them, 16 substances were presented in plasma, 114 in urine, 51 in bile, and 120 in feces, respectively. Hydrogenation, hydrolysis, and glucuronidation were the major metabolic reactions of ZSS in rats. The present study provided meaningful data for further pharmacological mechanism research or pharmacokinetics evaluation of ZSS.Multiple small-molecule kinase inhibitors with specific molecular targets have recently been developed for the treatment of cancer. For chromatographic analyte separation, an Acquity UPLC® BEH C18 column 1.7 μm, 50 mm x 2.1 mm was used with a binary gradient of pure water/formic acid/ammonium formate (1000.10.02, v/v/v) and methanol/formic acid (1000.1, v/v). Calibration curves for all small-molecule kinase inhibitors were 5.00-500 ng/mL. Validation of this method met all requirements of the Food and Drug administration. Additionally, clinical applicability was demonstrated by quantification of multiple samples from a pharmacokinetic study in patients with lung cancer.
    Laughter yoga is one of the increasingly used methods among complementary health approaches in the world. The aim of this study was to determine the effectiveness of laughter yoga on physical function and psychosocial outcomes in older adults.

    In this systematic review, electronic searches were performed in CINAHL, Web of Science, COCHRANE, Scopus, ProQuest databases from May 2010 to May 2020.     A total of 3210 studies were examined, and seven publications (six quasi experimental and one randomized control trial), in accordance with the inclusion criteria were included in the study and evaluated. The results indicated that significant differences were found in the effectiveness of laughter yoga on physical function (blood pressure, cortisol level, sleep quality) and psychosocial health (life satisfaction, quality of life, loneliness, death anxiety, depression, mood, happiness) in older adults.

This study served as proof of concept for a promising and new method of crude oil forensics that applies principal component analysis (PCA) and partial least squares discriminant analysis (PLSDA) in tandem with traditional forensic oil fingerprinting tools to confer additional confidence in challenging oil spill cases. In this study, weathering resulted in physical and chemical changes to the spilled oils, thereby decreasing the reliability of GC/FID and GC/MS diagnostic ratios in source attribution. The shortcomings of these traditional methods were overcome by applying multivariate statistical tools that enabled accurate characterization of the crude oil spill samples in an efficient and defensible manner.

The present study assessed the environmental impacts via life cycle assessment (LCA) of five solar-based treatments - solar photolysis (with and without H2O2), photocatalysis using TiO2 (with and without H2O2) and circumneutral photo-Fenton - using a pilot-scale compound parabolic collector photoreactor to select the most suitable option for the removal of micropollutants (carenergy use during the application of advanced treatment processes is reinforced.With the recent rapid development of urbanization, severe air pollution events frequently occur in China. Subsequently, variations of bioaerosols during air pollution events have attracted increasing attention in recent years. However, most published studies on bioaerosols mainly focus on the characteristics of airborne bacteria and fungi at a certain height near the ground surface. The vertical variations in microbial aerosols at different heights are not well understood. In this study, PM2.5 samples at three heights (1.5 m, 100 m and 229.5 m) were collected from September 2019 to January 2020 in Xi'an, China. The samples were then analyzed by a fluorescence staining and high-throughput sequencing to explore the vertical variations in the concentration and community structure of the airborne bacteria. The results show that the microbial concentration in PM2.5 decreased with increasing height on polluted days, while there was no significant difference at different heights on non-polluted days (p > 0.05). The bacterial community structures were similar at different heights on polluted days; however, on non-polluted days, the bacterial community structure at 229.5 m was significantly different from that at the other heights. Importantly, meteorological factors had more significant effects on the bacterial community at 229.5 m than at 1.5 m and 100 m. The present results can improve the understanding of vertical distribution of bioaerosols and their diffusion process.To effectively manage sustainably groundwater bodies, it is essential to establish what the naturally occurring ranges of chemical concentrations in groundwaters are and how they change over time.     We reviewed 2303 adult patients who underwent transaortic septal myectomy for obstructive hypertrophic cardiomyopathy from January 1993 to April 2016. Patients were divided into 3 groups according to their permanent address local (state) residents (n=324), regional (surrounding 5 states) patients (n=515), and national (outside 5 states) patients (n=1464).

    Patient groups were similar for age, sex, preoperative New York Heart Association class, and left ventricular ejection fraction. Local patients had increased prevalence of diabetes mellitus (13%, 11%, 8%; P=.006), coronary artery disease (25%, 21%, 19%; P=.031), severe chronic lung disease (2.3%, 1.9%, 0.4%; P<.001), and atrial fibrillation (24%, 18%, 19%; P=.045) when compared with regional and national patients. Echocardiographic features did not differ between the 3 groups, including prevalence of moderatetic septal myectomy.Estuaries receive the anthropogenic pollutants of their watershed area. From the study, it was observed that the chemical parameters are severely affected by anthropogenic influences such as sediment dredging, aquaculture effluent, and waste from industry and sewage from upstream. In the long run, this will affect the nearby nesting ground of vulnerable Olive Ridley turtles, high bio-diverse mangrove forests, and saltwater crocodile habitat.Flood debris associated with Typhoon Lionrock from the Tumen River at the border between Russia and North Korea was traced using ocean color and a Lagrangian particle-tracking model. As debris is transported along with discharged water during floods, a means of tracing floodwater should also allow any associated debris to be tracked. By analyzing the anomalous distribution of colored dissolved organic matter (CDOM) and total suspended sediments (TSS) from the Geostationary Ocean Color Imager (GOCI), the southward movement of the floodwater was tracked along the eastern coast of the Korean Peninsula. This movement was driven by the North Korean Cold Current and was consistent with model results. The similarity between the satellite-derived and modeled datasets shows that CDOM and TSS can be used to track flood-derived debris for several hundreds of kilometers and locate hotspots of debris accumulation.

Sixteen Italian clinical centers included patients with recent VTE in the START2-POST-VTE register and reported the decisions taken on duration of AT in each patient and the reasons for them. At the moment of this report, 472 (66.9%) of the 705 patients included in the registry were told to stop AT in 59.3% and to extend it in 40.7% of patients. Anticoagulant treatment lasted ≥3 months in >90% of patients and was extended in patients with proximal deep vein thrombosis because considered at high risk of recurrence or had thrombophilic abnormalities. d-dimer testing, assessment of residual thrombus, and patient preference were also indicated among the criteria influencing the decision. The literature on previous coronavirus infections reports that patients may experience persistent impairment in respiratory function after being discharged. Our objective was to determine the prevalence of restrictive pattern, obstructive pattern and altered diffusion in patients post-COVID-19 infection and to describe the different evaluations of respiratory function used with these patients.

    A systematic review was conducted in five databases. Studies that used lung function testing to assess post-infection COVID-19 patients were included for review. Two independent reviewers analysed the studies, extracted the data and assessed the quality of evidence.

  • Growth performance of pigs has been associated with healthy gut microbiota. To improve production, pigs are usually treated with antimicrobials. Nonetheless, while antimicrobials harm the gut-indigenous microbiota, probiotic supplementation seems to help keep it healthy. Here, using antimicrobials, we artificially induced dysbiosis in pigs and evaluated a possible preventive effect of probiotic supplementation. Three 6-week-old piglets were given a basal feed, and 3 more the feed supplemented with 2.0 × 106 CFU of Bacillus subtilis QST713/g of feed. After 14 days, antimicrobial enrofloxacin (5 mg/kg B.W.) was injected intramuscularly to all pigs on days 14-16. Feces were collected on days 14, 17, 19, 21, and 23. Total bacteria count was unaffected by enrofloxacin or QST713. However, Lactobacillus spp. and, in particular, Escherichia coli were affected by enrofloxacin, the latter not being observed in the feces on days 17 and 19. Interestingly, a reciprocal increase in E. coli was observed in control pigs on days 21 and 23, although in QST713-supplemented piglets, this increase was attenuated. While the gut microbiota composition did not return to initial levels in antimicrobial-administered piglets, it did in QST713-supplemented piglets. QST713 supplementation was likely crucial to keep the microbiota of piglets healthy.

We collected parental feedback and examined the experience of families using a 'Potty Monkey' to toilet train their child. Using logistic regression we explored patient factors for association with outcomes.

The experience of families was ambivalent. 10 families reported 'Potty Monkey' had been helpful however many complained it interfered with family schedules. Reasons for the child not responding positively were due to sensory issues, embarrassment and being developmentally not ready. Our study demonstrated the practical challenges of conducting research among children with special needs.

    Pain is underdiagnosed and undertreated in patients with Alzheimer's disease (AD). Pain management is of major importance in this population to limit behavioural and functional consequences. Our study aimed to assess the capacity of AD patients to represent pain using a questionnaire exploring daily painful situations and to determine the most appropriate pain scale assessment.

    Twenty-eight patients with mild AD, 21 with moderate AD and 28 matched controls underwent the Situation Pain Questionnaire (SP-Q) and assessed imaginary pain with four pain scales. Two scores were compared between the three groups the P(A) discrimination score and the response bias β score. P(A) reflects the degree of discrimination between high-pain and low-pain events, whereas the β score means the degree to which situations are considered as painful.

    Growth performance of pigs has been associated with healthy gut microbiota. To improve production, pigs are usually treated with antimicrobials. Nonetheless, while antimicrobials harm the gut-indigenous microbiota, probiotic supplementation seems to help keep it healthy. Here, using antimicrobials, we artificially induced dysbiosis in pigs and evaluated a possible preventive effect of probiotic supplementation. Three 6-week-old piglets were given a basal feed, and 3 more the feed supplemented with 2.0 × 106 CFU of Bacillus subtilis QST713/g of feed. After 14 days, antimicrobial enrofloxacin (5 mg/kg B.W.) was injected intramuscularly to all pigs on days 14-16. Feces were collected on days 14, 17, 19, 21, and 23. Total bacteria count was unaffected by enrofloxacin or QST713. However, Lactobacillus spp. and, in particular, Escherichia coli were affected by enrofloxacin, the latter not being observed in the feces on days 17 and 19. Interestingly, a reciprocal increase in E. coli was observed in control pigs on days 21 and 23, although in QST713-supplemented piglets, this increase was attenuated. While the gut microbiota composition did not return to initial levels in antimicrobial-administered piglets, it did in QST713-supplemented piglets. QST713 supplementation was likely crucial to keep the microbiota of piglets healthy. Region of interest (0.15 cm) was settled. Intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC) results were classified using the following scale 0.00 to 0.20 = poor; 0.20 to 0.40 = fair; 0.40 to 075 = good; >0.75 = excellent. Ten adult dogs were enrolled. Intra-operator ICC values were >0.75 for both operators in every tendon portion. Inter-operator SWE ICC values for m/s measurements were 0.3, 0.61 and 0.61 for the enthesis, intermediate portion and the myotendinous junction respectively; for kPa measurements, values were respectively 0.3, 0.7 and 0.81. The three CCT portions were significantly different in stiffness (p-value  less then  0.001 for both m/s and kPa measurements). Over the last two decades, various models have been developed to quantitatively correlate the DWI signal with microstructural characteristics of prostate tissue. The simplest approach (ADC apparent diffusion coefficient) - currently established as the clinical standard - describes monoexponential decay of the DWI signal. While numerous studies have shown an inverse correlation of ADC values with the Gleason score, the ADC model lacks specificity and is based on water diffusion dynamics that are not true in human tissue. This article aims to explain the biophysical limitations of the standard DWI model and to discuss the potential of more complex, advanced DWI models.

    Here, the efficacy and safety of two secukinumab dosing regimens [low dose (LD) and high dose (HD)] in paediatric patients with severe chronic plaque psoriasis over one year are reported.

    In this multicentre, double-blind study (NCT02471144), patients aged 6 to <18years with severe chronic plaque psoriasis were stratified and randomized by weight (<25kg, 25 to <50kg, ≥50kg) and age (6 to <12years, 12 to <18years) to receive low-dose (LD 75/75/150mg) or high-dose (HD 75/150/300mg) subcutaneous secukinumab or placebo or etanercept 0.8mg/kg (up to a max of 50mg).

    Overall, 162 patients were randomized to receive secukinumab LD (n=40) or HD (n=40), etanercept (n=41) or placebo (n=41). The co-primary objectives of the study were met with both secukinumab doses (LD and HD) showing superior efficacy compared to placebo (P<0.0001) with respect to PASI 75 response (80.0%, 77.5% vs. 14.6%) and IGA mod 2011, 0 or 1 response (70%, 60% vs. 4.9%) at Week 12. Both secukinumab doses were superior to placebo (P<0.0001) with respect to PASI 90 response at Week 12 (72.5%, 67.5% vs. 2.4%). The efficacy of both doses was sustained to Week 52 with secukinumab achieving higher responses vs. etanercept (PASI 75/90/100 LD, 87.5%/75.0%/40.0% and HD, 87.5%/80.0%/47.5.% vs. etanercept, 68.3%/51.2%/22.0% and IGA 0 or 1 LD, 72.5% and HD, 75.0% vs. etanercept, 56.1%).     Leishmaniasis is considered a disease with multiple clinical/immunopathological characteristics, depending on the immunity of the host and the species of the parasite. In Panama, the most prevalent species that causes localized cutaneous leishmaniasis (LCL) is Leishmania (Viannia) panamensis, and its immune response is poorly studied. Therefore, we evaluated by immunohistochemistry, the in situ immune response during this infection.

    Biopsies from Panamanian patients with LCL were collected and processed by histological techniques. Infection by L. (V.) panamensis was demonstrated by isolation in culture and molecular characterization by Hsp70-RFLP. The in situ immune response was assessed by immunohistochemistry. The immune response was characterized by predominance of T cells, mainly CD8 cells that showed positive correlation with IFN-γ and Granzyme B. CD4 cells presented positive correlation with both IFN-γ and IL-13, pointed by mixed cellular immune response. Regulatory response was characterized by FoxP3 cells, which showed positive correlation to IL-10 but not with TGF-β.

    Coronavirus disease (COVID-19) has spread very fast worldwide as a pandemic causing unprecedented morbidity and mortality. Most countries in the world have undergone emergency lockdown in an attempt to flatten the curve and reduce the load on healthcare systems.

    This study was done to assess the knowledge, attitude, and perception toward the disease among the home-bound Indian population during the lockdown.

    We conducted a cross-sectional study between September 2 and December 5, 2019, via a self-administered online questionnaire among healthcare workers at a university hospital. The questionnaire comprised 24 questions divided into two sections pertaining to demographics and first aid for burns. This study was approved by the Research Ethics Committee.

    We included 1,438 respondents in this study. Females comprised 68.2% (982) of the respondents. A total of 513 respondents (35.7%) were medical students. The mean burn knowledge score of all respondents was 8.07 ± 2.03 out of 13. Interestingly, 940 individuals (65.4%) used traditional medications on the burn area. Knowledge regarding antibiotic use in burn injuries was poor-1,199 (82.3%) study participants agreed that antibiotics are beneficial in the case of burns, which is a wrong act. The mean knowledge score was significantly different across groups of different ages, sexes, nationalities, marital statuses, and job positions (

Smartphones foster social interaction and facilitate multitasking and learning, but they also have some adverse effects. Young people, especially students, who are always inquisitive towards new technology, are likely to be affected by both these positive and negative impacts.

    A cross-sectional study was conducted among the undergraduate medical students of Government Medical College (GMC), Haldwani. All the students enrolled in MBBS course in GMC, Haldwani, who gave consent for participation and were present on the day of questionnaire administration, were included in the study. Smartphone addiction scale (SAS-SV), and WHO-BREF questionnaires for QOL were used for assessing smartphone use, and QOL of the medical students, respectively.

    A total of 395 medical students were included in the study; out of them, 42% considered themselves addicted to the smartphone. According to SAS-SV, smartphone addiction was found among 43.8% medical students. It was seen that the junior-most and senior-most batches were significantly less addicted to the smartphone (p-value < 0.001). Male students were more addicted (OR = 1.45, CI = 0.962-2.174) to the smartphone as compared to females. The QOL of the students was significantly affected by smartphone use in all domains assessed (p-value ranging from < 0.001 to 0.002).

We focused on two aspects of perceptual memory namely memory bias (i.e., over- or underestimation of stimulus magnitude) and uncertainty. We found that memory bias predicted the pattern of generalized self-reported (expectancy ratings) and psychophysiological responses (fear-potentiated startle responses). Memory uncertainty was measured in two ways self-reported uncertainty ratings and variability in stimulus recall. We found that higher levels of self-reported memory uncertainty corresponded with a broader generalization gradient on US expectancy, while greater variability in memory recall was associated with a broader generalization gradient on fear-potentiated startle responses. Taken together, our findings suggest that memory is an important determinant of generalized behavior and illustrate the need to account for these interindividual differences in perceptual memory when examining the generalization of learned responses.
    Convolutional neural networks (CNNs) offer a promising approach to automated segmentation. However, labeling contours on a large scale is laborious. Here we propose a method to improve segmentation continually with less labeling effort.

    The cohort included 600 patients with nasopharyngeal carcinoma. The proposed method was comprised of four steps. First, an initial CNN model was trained from scratch to perform segmentation of the clinical target volume. Second, a binary classifier was trained using a secondary CNN to identify samples for which the initial model gave a dice similarity coefficient (DSC)<0.85. Third, the classifier was used to select such samples from the new coming data. Forth, the final model was fine-tuned from the initial model, using only selected samples.

    The classifier can detect poor segmentation of the model with an accuracy of 92%. The proposed segmentation method improved the DSC from 0.82 to 0.86 while reducing the labeling effort by 45%.

The secondary fragments have low kinetic energies and high atomic numbers as compared to primary protons. Fragments have a high LET and deposit all their energy close to the generation point. For their characteristics, secondary fragments can alter the dose distribution and lead to an increase of RBE for the same delivered physical dose. By manipulating the pre-listening transcript effect (pre-listening transcript reading [TR] vs. no transcript reading [NTR]) and type of languages (first language (L1) vs. https://www.selleckchem.com/products/adaptaquin.html L2), we measured brain activity in L2 learners, who performed fast-rate listening comprehension tasks during functional magnetic resonance imaging. Thereafter, we examined whether TR_L2-specific brain activity can predict individual learning success after an intensive listening training. We focused on two aspects of perceptual memory namely memory bias (i.e., over- or underestimation of stimulus magnitude) and uncertainty. We found that memory bias predicted the pattern of generalized self-reported (expectancy ratings) and psychophysiological responses (fear-potentiated startle responses). Memory uncertainty was measured in two ways self-reported uncertainty ratings and variability in stimulus recall. We found that higher levels of self-reported memory uncertainty corresponded with a broader generalization gradient on US expectancy, while greater variability in memory recall was associated with a broader generalization gradient on fear-potentiated startle responses. Taken together, our findings suggest that memory is an important determinant of generalized behavior and illustrate the need to account for these interindividual differences in perceptual memory when examining the generalization of learned responses. Convolutional neural networks (CNNs) offer a promising approach to automated segmentation. However, labeling contours on a large scale is laborious. Here we propose a method to improve segmentation continually with less labeling effort. The cohort included 600 patients with nasopharyngeal carcinoma. The proposed method was comprised of four steps. First, an initial CNN model was trained from scratch to perform segmentation of the clinical target volume. Second, a binary classifier was trained using a secondary CNN to identify samples for which the initial model gave a dice similarity coefficient (DSC)<0.85. Third, the classifier was used to select such samples from the new coming data. Forth, the final model was fine-tuned from the initial model, using only selected samples. The classifier can detect poor segmentation of the model with an accuracy of 92%. The proposed segmentation method improved the DSC from 0.82 to 0.86 while reducing the labeling effort by 45%. The proposed method reduces the amount of labeled training data and improves segmentation by continually acquiring, fine-tuning, and transferring knowledge over long time spans. The secondary fragments have low kinetic energies and high atomic numbers as compared to primary protons. Fragments have a high LET and deposit all their energy close to the generation point. For their characteristics, secondary fragments can alter the dose distribution and lead to an increase of RBE for the same delivered physical dose. Moreover, the radiobiological impact of target fragmentation is significant mostly in the region before the Bragg peak, where generally healthy tissues are present, and immediately after Bragg peak. Nowadays, scientific research is focusing especially on immune checkpoint inhibitors, in particular anti-PD1, anti-PD-L1 and anti-CTLA4 monoclonal antibodies (mAbs), as single-agent or in combination with other immunotherapy agents, target therapies, anti-vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) and other agents targeting specific molecular pathways. Other immunotherapy strategies have been assessed or are under investigation in advanced HCC, namely cytokines, adoptive cell therapy, oncolytic virus, cancer vaccines. Each treatment presents specific efficacy and toxicity profiles, strictly related to their mechanism of action and to advanced HCC tumour microenvironment (TME). The aim of this review is to outline the state-of-the-art of immunotherapy in advanced HCC treatment, highlighting data on already investigated treatment strategies, safety and toxicity (including HBV/HCV-related HCC), and ongoing clinical trials focusing on new promising therapeutic weapons.

  • Catalyzed diesel particulate filters (CDPFs) have been widespread used as a technically and economically feasible mean for meeting increasingly stringent emissions limits. An important issue affecting the performance of a CDPF is its aging with using time. In this paper, the effects of noble metal loadings, regions and using mileage on the aging performance of a CDPF were investigated by methods of X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and catalytic activity evaluation. Results showed that aging of the CDPF shifted the XRD characteristic diffraction peaks towards larger angles and increased the crystallinity, showing a slowing downward trend with the increase of the noble metal loadings. In addition, the increase of the noble metal loading would slow down the decline of Pt and Pt4+ concentration caused by aging. The characteristic temperatures of CO, C3H8 conversion and NO2 production increased after aging, and the more the noble metal loadings, the higher the range of the increase. But noticeably, excessive amounts of noble metals would not present the corresponding anti-aging properties. Specifically, the degree of aging in the inlet region was the deepest, the following is the outlet region, and the middle region was the smallest, which were also reflected in the increase range of crystallinity, characteristic temperatures of CO, C3H8 conversion and NO2 production, as well as the decrease range of Pt and Pt4+ concentrations. The increase of aging mileage reduced the size of the aggregates of the soot and ash in CDPFs, however, improved the degree of tightness between particles. Meanwhile Carbon (C) concentration in the soot and ash increased with the aging mileage.While the importance of the circadian system to health and well-being is extensively studied, the role of daylight exposure in these interactions is relatively poorly understood. Here we show, using a diurnal animal model naturally exposed to daylight, that daily morning exposure to 3000 lux, full spectrum electric light has beneficial health effects. Compared with controls, sand rats (Psammomys obesus) subjected to morning light treatment demonstrate daily rhythms with high peak to trough difference in activity, blood glucose levels and per2 gene expression in the suprachiasmatic nucleus, pre-frontal cortex, kidney and liver. The treated animals were also healthier, being normoglycemic, having higher glucose tolerance, lower body and heart weight and lower anxiety- and depression-like behavior. Our results suggest that exposure to high intensity light is important for the proper function of the circadian system and well-being, and are important in face of human's low exposure to daylight and extensive use of artificial light at night.Solubility prediction remains a critical challenge in drug development, synthetic route and chemical process design, extraction and crystallisation. Here we report a successful approach to solubility prediction in organic solvents and water using a combination of machine learning (ANN, SVM, RF, ExtraTrees, Bagging and GP) and computational chemistry. Rational interpretation of dissolution process into a numerical problem led to a small set of selected descriptors and subsequent predictions which are independent of the applied machine learning method. These models gave significantly more accurate predictions compared to benchmarked open-access and commercial tools, achieving accuracy close to the expected level of noise in training data (LogS ± 0.7). Finally, they reproduced physicochemical relationship between solubility and molecular properties in different solvents, which led to rational approaches to improve the accuracy of each models.The prognosis of a patient with COVID-19 pneumonia is uncertain. Calibration and discrimination (receiver operating characteristics curves and AUC) were assessed to determine model performance. During the study period 1152 patients presented with SARS-CoV-2 infection, of whom 229 (19.9%) were admitted for pneumonia. During hospitalization, 51 (22.3%) progressed to severe disease, of whom 26 required ICU care (11.4); 17 (7.4%) underwent invasive mechanical ventilation, and 32 (14%) died of any cause. Five predictors determined within 24 h of admission were identified Diabetes, Age, Lymphocyte count, SaO2, and pH (DALSH score). The prediction model showed a good clinical performance, including discrimination (AUC 0.87 CI 0.81, 0.92) and calibration (Brier score = 0.11). In total, 0%, 12%, and 50% of patients with severity risk scores ≤ 5%, 6-25%, and > 25% exhibited disease progression, respectively. Our findings indicated that UVR was the dominant driver, its effect being between 3-60 times stronger, on average, than that of any other driver tested. Also, UVR had the largest difference in driver magnitude of all the treatments tested.

  • Support-free nonporous membranes have emerged as a new material platform for osmotic pressure-driven processes due to its insusceptibility to internal concentration polarization (ICP). Herein, we demonstrate high-performance membranes of zwitterionic hydrogels impregnated in porous membranes with a skin layer of highly cross-linked polyamides on both sides prepared by gel-liquid interfacial polymerization (GLIP). Such a configuration eliminates the pores and thus ICP, while the thin polyamide layer provides high salt rejection but negligible resistance to the water transport compared with the hydrogels. The polyamide skin layers are characterized using scanning electron microscopy and atomic force microscopy. The effect of the hydrogel compositions and polyamide formation conditions on the water/salt separation properties is thoroughly investigated. Example membranes show water permeance and salt rejection comparable to state-of-the-art commercial forward osmosis membranes and essentially no ICP.Lead-free perovskite CaCu3Ti4O12 (CCTO) dielectrics are extremely important candidates for capacitor-varistor dual-function materials. However, their overall success in applications is somewhat controlled by the longstanding issues such as relatively large dielectric loss and insufficiently high electric breakdown field. Herein, we report the success in the preparation of an optimized lead-free (1-x)CaCu3Ti4O12-xSrTiO3 (CCTO-STO) composite system with improved dielectric and nonlinear properties via interface engineering. Interestingly, looking closer at the grain boundaries using transmission electron microscopy, it is found that an obvious interface region with a transition layer of a wrinkled structure is formed between the CCTO matrix phase and STO dopant phase. Significantly, all the composite ceramic samples present high permittivity in the order of about 103 to 104, and the 0.9CCTO-0.1STO composite ceramic sample exhibits a lower dielectric loss of about 0.068 at room temperature and at 1 kHz. Thus, in this study, we combine experiments, particle-based simulations, and mean-field calculations to show that, in general, the size of the self-assembled scaffold scales with the cell-to-particle ratio. However, we have found an optimal value of this ratio, for which the size of the scaffold is maximal when the cell-cell adhesion is suppressed.
