    Bipolar disorder (BP) is commonly researched in digital settings. As a result, standardized digital tools are needed to measure mood. We sought to validate a new survey that is brief, validated in digital form, and able to separately measure manic and depressive severity.

    We introduce a 6-item digital survey, called digiBP, for measuring mood in BP. It has three depressive items (depressed mood, fidgeting, fatigue), two manic items (increased energy, rapid speech), and one mixed item (irritability); and recovers two scores (m and d) to measure manic and depressive severity. In a secondary analysis of individuals with BP who monitored their symptoms over 6weeks (n=43), we perform a series of analyses to validate the digiBP survey internally, externally, and as a longitudinal measure.

    We first verify a conceptual model for the survey in which items load onto two factors ("manic" and "depressive"). We then show weekly averages of m and d scores from digiBP can explain significant variation in weekly scores from the Young Mania Rating Scale (R
    =0.47) and SIGH-D (R
    =0.58). Lastly, we examine the utility of the survey as a longitudinal measure by predicting an individual's future m and d scores from their past m and d scores.

    While further validation is warranted in larger, diverse populations, these validation analyses should encourage researchers to consider digiBP for their next digital study of BP.

Seed dispersal in orchids is expected to contribute strongly to overall gene flow, and orchids generally express low levels of genetic differentiation between populations and low pollen to seed flow ratios. However, studies in orchids distributed in northern Europe have often found a poor geographic structuring of genetic variation. Here, we studied geographic differentiation in the marsh orchid Dactylorhiza umbrosa, which is widely distributed in upland regions from Asia Minor to Central Asia. These areas were less affected by Pleistocene ice ages than northern Europe and the orchid should have been able to survive the last ice age in local refugia. In the plastid genome, which is dispersed by seeds, populations at close distance were clearly divergent, but the differentiation still increased with geographic distance, and a significant phylogeographic structure had developed. In the nuclear genome, which is dispersed by both seeds and pollen, populations showed an even stronger correlation between genetic and geographic distance, but average levels of differentiation were lower than in the plastid genome, and no phylogeographic structure was evident. Combining plastid and nuclear data, we found that the ratio of pollen to seed dispersal (mp/ms) decreases with physical distance. Our laboratory results show that green algae degrade H2 O2 **** faster than cyanobacteria. Consequently, the cyanobacterium Microcystis was able to survive at higher H2 O2 concentrations in mixtures with the green alga Chlorella than in monoculture. Interestingly, even the lysate of destructed Chlorella was capable to protect Microcystis, indicating a two-component H2 O2 degradation system in which Chlorella provided antioxidant enzymes and Microcystis the reductants. The level of interspecific protection provided to Microcystis depended on the density of Chlorella. These findings have implications for the mitigation of toxic cyanobacterial blooms, which threaten the water quality of many eutrophic lakes and reservoirs worldwide.

Leadership collectives can support a move in academia from metrics to merits, from a focus on career to care, and enact a shift from disciplinary to inter- and trans-disciplinary research. Academic organisations need to reorient their training programs, work ethics and reward systems to encourage collective excellence and to allow space for future leaders to develop and enact a radically re-imagined vision of how to lead as a collective with care for people and the planet.

    Some medical disciplines have reported astrong decrease of emergencies during the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic; however, the effect of the lockdown on general surgery emergencies remains unclear.

    This study is aretrospective, multicenter analysis of general surgery emergency operations performed during the period from 1 March to 15th 2020 lockdown and in the same time period of 2019 in three medical centers providing emergency surgical care to the area Salzburg-North, Austria.

Increased media coverage of China begs to ask the question what image of China the Slovak media are presenting to the public. The proposed article draws upon an extensive database of media pieces published or broadcasted by Slovak newspapers, TV stations, radios, as well as online media outlets in the period of 2010-2017. Using the method of qualitative content analysis, a selection of over 2600 media pieces are analyzed and coded for general sentiments and themes covered in the media. Secondly, the paper also analyzes the perception of China among Slovak political elites, drawing on interviews with key stakeholders among the most important political parties, as well as public perception based on several opinion surveys. The article concludes that while negative perception of China prevails in the media and among the public, it is not complex and prone to change.   • The results support further research in the application of our newly generated AMP as an antimicrobial agent in the food industry and in food processing facilities.Miniaturized coagulation (**) models have been proposed for the evaluation of curd yield (CY) in individual milk samples of different dairy species and breeds, and for the analysis of cheese microstructure and texture. It is still unclear if ** using less than 50 mL of milk is suitable to evaluate CY and chemical composition, and if preservative added to raw milk may interfere with ** process. Therefore, this study aimed at evaluating repeatability and reproducibility of CY, curd moisture, and fat and protein content on curd dry matter (DM) from ** trials using 40 g of milk. Miniaturized coagulations were performed by 3 different operators on 3 consecutive days, using raw milk (RM) and raw milk added with preservative (RMP). Repeatability of CY, calculated as relative standard deviation on 6 miniaturized curds obtained within a day by the same operator, was below 5% for ** carried out with both RM and RMP. The Horwitz ratio, which is the ratio between measured and expected reproducibility, highlighted good reproducibility for CY from RM and fair reproducibility for CY from RMP. The same ratio highlighted lower accuracies for curd moisture and fat and protein content on curd DM, especially for ** trials carried out with RMP. The z-test was performed to evaluate the similarity between curds manufactured with RM and RMP in terms of average yield and chemical composition; z-scores did not highlight significant differences between values obtained from ** carried out with RM and RMP. The total lipid extract was then applied to a silica gel-based solid-phase extraction column, and triglycerides and other nonpolar lipids were separated from the phospholipids and sphingolipids. Quantitation was performed by hydrophilic interaction HPLC coupled to evaporative light-scattering detection using a quaternary separation method. The method was validated using a commercial whey protein phospholipid concentrate and was used to analyze phospholipid and sphingolipid composition in buttermilk, whey protein concentrate, whey protein phospholipid concentrate, and several other dairy ingredients. This method was sensitive and reproducible and can be used in the dairy industry as a research tool to develop new value-added dairy phospholipid products, then later as a standard protocol for quality assurance analysis of current and future products.The present research was established to study the effect of green tea and Pu-erh tea (PT) additives on the mechanical and hydration properties of yogurt gels using a combination of nuclear magnetic resonance, rheological, and textural studies. Generally, green tea fortification produced yogurts with more consolidated gel structure, tighter interacting water, and less susceptibility to shearing and temperature changes than PT treatments. In contrast, PT yogurts were more viscous and characterized by 8 to 17% lower hardness values. Factors influencing herd life, such as health, rearing, environmental conditions, and management, are often ignored when longevity goals are evaluated, thereby underestimating the effect these factors have on defining overall longevity. Also, production efficiency, herd profitability, and welfare are not necessarily served by the longest life but rather by the optimized length of herd life instead.

    We have tested 7H-Dibenzo[c,g]carbazole (7H-DBC) and Dibenz[a,h]acridine (DBAD) derivatives of Asz-arenes along with N'-Nitrosoanabasine (NAB) and N-Nitrosoanatabine (NAT) derivatives of N-Nitrosamines molecular interaction with CNS biomolecules.

    Computational synergistic approaches like system biology and molecular interaction techniques were implemented to conduct the analysis Results CSC efficiently interacted with NRAS, KRAS, CDH1, and RAC1 molecular targets in CNS. Immunizations are not required, leaving refugees at risk for vaccine-preventable diseases. In response, the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the US Department of State developed and co-funded a global immunization program for US-bound refugees, implemented in 2012 in collaboration with the International Organization for Migration.

    We describe the Vaccination Program for US-bound Refugees, including vaccination schedule development, program implementation and procedures, and responses to challenges. We estimate 2019 immunization coverage rates using the number of age-eligible refugees who received ≥1 dose of measles-containing vaccine during overseas health assessment, and calculated hepatitis B infection prevalence using hepatitis B surface antigen testing results. We report descriptive data on adverse everds across diverse settings is challenging, solutions such as introduction of dedicated staff, protocol development, and ongoing technical support have ensured program cohesion, continuity, and advancement. Lessons learned can benefit similar programs implemented in the migration setting.

Due to reductions in refugee movement cancellation, lower cost of immunization overseas, and likely reductions in vaccine preventable disease-associated morbidity, we anticipate significant cost savings. Although maintaining uniform standards across diverse settings is challenging, solutions such as introduction of dedicated staff, protocol development, and ongoing technical support have ensured program cohesion, continuity, and advancement. Lessons learned can benefit similar programs implemented in the migration setting.Constructed wetlands integrated with microbial fuel cells (****CWs) have been recently developed and tested for removing antibiotics. However, the effects of carbon source availability, electron transfer flux and cathode conditions on antibiotics removal in ****CWs through co-metabolism remained unclear. In this study, four experiments were conducted in ****CW microcosms to investigate the influence of carbon source species and concentrations, external resistance and aeration duration on sulfamethoxazole (SMX) and tetracycline (TC) removal and bioelectricity generation performance. ****CWs supplied with glucose as carbon source outperformed other carbon sources, and moderate influent glucose concentration (200 mg L-1) resulted in the best removal of both SMX and TC. Highest removal percentages of SMX (99.4%) and TC (97.8%) were obtained in ****CWs with the external resistance of 700 Ω compared to other external resistance treatments. SMX and TC removal percentages in ****CWs were improved by 4.98% and 4.34%, respectively, by increasing the aeration duration to 12 h compared to no aeration. For bioelectricity generation performance, glucose outperformed sodium acetate, sucrose and starch, with the highest voltages of 386 ± 20 mV, maximum power density (MPD) of 123.43 mW m-3, and coulombic efficiency (CE) of 0.273%. Increasing carbon source concentrations from 100 to 400 mg L-1, significantly (p less then 0.05) increased the voltage and MPD, but decreased the internal resistance and CE. The highest MPD was obtained when the external resistance (700 Ω) was close to the internal resistance (600.11 Ω). Aeration not only improved the voltage and MPD, but also reduced the internal resistance. This study demonstrates that carbon source species and concentrations, external resistances and aeration duration, all play vital roles in regulating SMX and TC removal in ****CWs.

  • PURPOSE OF REVIEW To give an updated review on the underlying mechanisms and clinical effects of improved glucose control after bariatric surgery. RECENT FINDINGS The basic principles of the mechanism for the metabolic effects of bariatric surgery can be categorized into calorie restriction, deviation of nutrients, and reduced amounts of adipose tissue. Recent findings suggest the importance of early changes following deviation of nutrients to more distal parts of the small bowel resulting in altered release of gastrointestinal hormones, altered gut microbiota, and weight-reduction. In the long-term, loss of adipose tissue results in reduced inflammation and improved insulin sensitivity. From a clinical perspective these changes are associated with remission of diabetes in patients with morbid obesity and type 2 diabetes, prevention of diabetes in patients with insulin resistance without overt type 2 diabetes and prevention of both microvascular and macrovascular complications for all patients with morbid obesity. SUMMARY At present, bariatric surgery remains the most effective treatment option to improve glucose control and long-term complications associated with hyperglycemia in patients with obesity.Although the mechanisms behind these metabolic effects remain only partially understood, further knowledge on these complex mechanisms may help identifying durable treatment options for morbid obesity and important metabolic comorbidities.BACKGROUND Introduction of the GlideScope videolaryngoscope caused a change in use of other devices for difficult airway management. RESULTS Difficult airway management techniques were used in 235/8306 (2.8%) patients before and in 480/8517 (5.6%) (P  less then  0.0001) patients after the introduction of the GlideScope. There was an overall 44.4% reduction in use of flexible fibreoptic bronchoscopy after GlideScope introduction [beforethan the reduction in the use of flexible fibreoptic bronchoscopy and other difficult intubation techniques. This may be attributed to resident teaching and use in patients with low-to-moderate suspicion of difficult intubation. The change from time-based to competency-based medical education has been driven by society's requirement for greater accountability of medical practitioners and those who train them. The European Society of Anaesthesiology and European Section/Board of Anaesthesiology (Anaesthesiology Section of the European Union Medical Specialists) endorse the general principles of competency-based medical education and training (CBMET) outlined by the international competency-based medical education collaborators. A CBMET curriculum is built on unambiguously defined learning objectives, each of which offers a measurable outcome, amenable to assessment using valid and reliable tools. OBJECTIVE Using the Appraisal of Guidelines for Research & Evaluation II instrument, we aimed to evaluate the methodological rigour and transparency of unanticipated difficult airway management CPGs in adults. DESIGN Using PUBMED without language restrictions, we identified eligible CPGs between 1 January 1996 and 30 June 2019. All versions of a CPG were included as independent guidelines to assess improvements over time or the methodological limitations of each version. CPGs-related obstetrics or paediatrics or the management extubation in cases of difficult airway were excluded. RESULTS Fourteen CPGs were included. Of the six domains suggested by the Appraisal of Guidelines for Research & Evaluation II instrument, 'applicability' had the lowest score (23%) and 'scope and objectives' had the highest score (88%). The remaining domains (stakeholder involvement, editorial independence, rigour of development and clarity of presentation) had scores ranging between 56 and 81%. Overall, the highest scored CPG was the Difficult Airway Society 2015. Of the six domains suggested by the Appraisal of Guidelines for Research & Evaluation II instrument, 'applicability' had the lowest score (23%) and 'scope and objectives' had the highest score (88%).   • Of the 1.25 million Americans living with type 1 diabetes mellitus, approximately 200,000 are school-aged children. This has significant implications for public health practice, policy, and opportunities for further research to establish interventions that incorporate increasing self-efficacy in PrEP use. Specifically, the investigator set out to determine (a) the relationship between family support and health outcomes in selected African-American females with type 2 diabetes; (b) the relationship between self-care and health outcomes in selected African-American females with type 2 diabetes; and (c) which of the two variables assessed in this study (family support and self-care) best predict health outcomes. A convenience sample of African-American females between the ages of 40-80 years were recruited through Qualtrics survey software.   • It remains unclear how introduction of high-sensitivity troponin T testing, as opposed to conventional troponin testing, has affected the diagnosis of acute myocardial infarction (AMI) and resource utilization in unselected hospitalized patients. In this retrospective analysis, we include all consecutive cases from our center during two corresponding time frames (10/2016-04/2017 and 10/2017-04/2018) for which different troponin tests were performed conventional troponin I (cTnI) and high-sensitivity troponin T (hs-TnT) assays. Testing was performed in 18,025 cases. The incidence of troponin levels above the 99th percentile was significantly higher in cases tested using hs-TnT. This was not associated with increased utilization of echocardiography, coronary angiography, or percutaneous coronary intervention. Although there were no changes in local standard operating procedures, study site personnel, or national coding guidelines, the number of coded AMI significantly decreased after introduction of hs-TnT. In this single-center retrospective study comprising 18,025 mixed medical and surgical cases with troponin testing, the introduction of hs-TnT was not associated with changes in resource utilization among the general cohort, but instead, led to a decrease in the international classification of diseases (ICD)-10 coded diagnosis of AMI.Capturing images under rainy days degrades image visual quality and affects analysis tasks, such as object detection and classification. Therefore, image de-raining has attracted a lot of attention in recent years. In this paper, an improved generative adversarial network for single image de-raining is proposed. According to the principles of divide-and-conquer, we divide an image de-raining task into rain locating, rain removing, and detail refining sub-tasks. A multi-stream DenseNet, termed as Rain Estimation Network, is proposed to estimate the rain location map. A Generative Adversarial Network is proposed to remove the rain streaks. A Refinement Network is proposed to refine the details. These three models accomplish rain locating, rain removing, and detail refining sub-tasks, respectively. Experiments on two synthetic datasets and real world images demonstrate that the proposed method outperforms state-of-the-art de-raining studies in both objective and subjective measurements.We present results on thin Ti-Nb-based films containing Hf at various concentrations grown by magnetron sputtering. The films exhibit α" patterns at Hf concentrations up to 11 at.%, while at 16 at.% Hf, the β-phase emerges as a stable structure. These findings were consolidated by ab initio calculations, according to which the α"-β transformation is manifested in the calculation of the electronic band energies for Hf contents between 11 and 18 at.%. It turns out that the β-phase transition originates from the Hf 5d contributions at the Fermi level and the Hf 6s hybridizations at low energies in the electronic density of states. Bonding-anti-bonding first neighbor features existing in the shifted plane destabilize the α″-phase, especially at high Hf concentrations, while the covalent-like features in the first neighborhood stabilize the corresponding plane of the β-phase. Thin films measurements and bulk total energy calculations agree that the lattice constants of both α″ and β phases increase upon Hf substitution. These results are important for the understanding of β-Ti-based alloys formation mechanisms and can be used for the design of suitable biocompatible materials.The time when plant biostimulants were considered as "snake oil" is erstwhile and the skepticism regarding their agricultural benefits has significantly faded, as solid scientific evidences of their positive effects are continuously provided. They are widely known as substances with the function of mitigating abiotic stress and enhancing plant productivity. Seaweed extracts are derived from the extraction of several macroalgae species, which depending on the extraction methodology lead to the production of complex mixtures of biologically active compounds. Consequently, plant responses are often inconsistent, and precisely deciphering the involved mechanism of action remains highly intricate. Recently, scientists all over the world have been inted.Sodium alginate (NaAlg) based membranes were prepared using a solution technique, crosslinked with poly(styrene sulfonic acid-co-maleic acid) (PSSA-co-MA). Subsequently, the membranes were modified by the incorporation of 0, 10, 20, 30 and 40% w/w of titanium dioxide with respect to sodium alginate. The membranes thus obtained were designated as M, M-1, M-2, M-3 and M-4, respectively. An equilibrium swelling experiment was performed using different compositions of the water and isopropanol mixtures. Subsequently, we used a pervaporation cell fitted with each membrane in order to evaluate the extent of the pervaporation dehydration of isopropanol. Among the membranes studied, the membranes containing 40 mass% of titanium dioxide exhibited the highest separation factor(α) of 24,092, with a flux(J) of 18.61 × 10-2 kg/m2∙h at 30 °C for 10 mass% w/w of water in the feed. The total flux and the flux of water were found to overlap with each other, indicating that these membranes can be effectively used to break the azeotropic point of water-isopropanol mixtures. The results clearly indicate that these nanocomposite membranes exhibit an excellent performance in the dehydration of isopropanol. The activation energy values obtained for the water permeation were significantly lower than those of the isopropanol permeation, underlining that these membranes have a high separation ability for the water-isopropanol system.
