To control the effects of the cancer, it is critically important to elucidate the pathophysiological processes by which it occurs and develops. Reports have demonstrated that long noncoding RNAs perform a critical role in the development and metastasis of cancers. The lncRNA TTN-AS1 is considered carcinogenic. Nevertheless, the importance and biological functions of TTN-AS1 in breast cancer require greater exploration. In the current paper, we observed that TTN-AS1 expression was significantly upregulated in breast cancer tissues/cells compared with those that are healthy. TTN-AS1 enhanced the proliferation, migration, invasion, and epithelial-mesenchymal transformation of breast cancer cells. Furthermore, a direct target of TTN-AS1, miR-139-5p was negatively regulated. In addition, zinc finger E-box binding homeobox 1 (ZEB1) is an important nuclear transcription factor, the expression of which is increased in multiple tumors. Here, we also found that ZEB1 is a target of miR-139-5p, of which TTN-AS1 could regulate the expression through competition with miR-139-5p. That is, TTN-AS1 promoted proliferation and invasion of breast cancer cells by interaction with the miR-139-5p/ZEB1 axis. Models that explain and predict this difficulty can be broadly divided into two kinds, expectation-based and memory-based. In this work, we present a new model of incremental sentence processing difficulty that unifies and extends key features of both kinds of models. Our model, lossy-context surprisal, holds that the processing difficulty at a word in context is proportional to the surprisal of the word given a lossy memory representation of the context-that is, a memory representation that does not contain complete information about previous words. We show that this model provides an intuitive explanation for an outstanding puzzle involving interactions of memory and expectations language-dependent structural forgetting, where the effects of memory on sentence processing appear to be moderated by language statistics. Furthermore, we demonstrate that dependency locality effects, a signature prediction of memory-based theories, can be derived from lossy-context surprisal as a special case of a novel, more general principle called information locality. This paper describes the study rationale, methodology, and participant baseline characteristics. DESIGN Single-centre, double-masked, randomised controlled trial. PARTICIPANTS Children (6-16 years) with spherical equivalent ≤ - 1.50D in each eye, astigmatism ≤1.50D, and myopia progression by ≥0.50D/year. METHODS Enrolled children were randomly assigned 21 to receive 0.01% atropine or placebo eyedrops. Participants are examined every six months during first three years of the study (2-year treatment phase followed by a 1-year washout phase), and then at a 5-year follow-up (two years after the end of the washout phase).

In-depth research on the mechanisms of adsorption and desorption processes between metals and microplastics will help assess the associated risks to both human health and the environment. Titanium (Ti), used in many dailyuse products, such as shampoos and sunscreen filters, in the form of TiO2 nanoparticles (NPs), may elicit adverse marine biota effects. Marine mammal Ti data is scarce, and subcellular distribution and detoxification information is non-existent. Ti concentrations and metalloprotein detoxification in Pontoporia blainvillei and Steno bredanensis dolphins from Southeastern Brazil were assessed. Metallothionein (MT) concentrations were determined spectrophotometrically, total and subcellular Ti, by ICP-MS and detoxification, by HPLC-ICP-MS. Ti detoxification occurred through MT complexation. Statistical Ti-MT associations were observed in S. bredanensis liver, indicating TiO2 NPs contamination, as Ti binds to MT only as NPs. MT-Ti correlations were observed for both the coastal (P. blainvillei) and offshore (S. bredanensis) dolphins, evidencing oceanic TiO2 diffusion. Ti detoxification through binding to reduced glutathione occurred in both species. Thermostable subcellular fractions are a valuable tool for cetacean Ti detoxification assessments and should be applied to conservation efforts. Plastics pollution is ubiquitous. Microplastics ( less then 5 mm in diameter) and mesoplastics (5-20 mm in diameter) are emerging as the most common plastic particulates found in the marine environment. In this study, the occurrence of microplastics and mesoplastics in the gastrointestinal tract (GI) of some commercially important fish collected from Chennai and Nagapattinam of Tamil Nadu, Southeast coast of Bay of Bengal was assessed. A new and improved alkaline digestion method, using alcoholic potassium hydroxide (KOH) was carried out to destroy the organic matter. Following this method, twenty plastic particulates were isolated from the GI tract of 17 individual fish. Fourier Transform Infrared Radiation analysis (FTIR) showed that polymers found in GI tracts were of Polyethylene, Polyamide and Polyester types. Given the dry fish is India's biggest market and popular delicacy, the presence of microplastics in the fish gut is a potential serious human health concern, as they are directly consumed. The cultivation and production of bivalve molluscs in regions of Rio de Janeiro is lucrative both artisanally and industrially, as the climate, geography and water quality favor the practice of this activity throughout the year at reduced costs, making the region competitive in the national market. The aim of this study was to isolate and identify filamentous fungi associated with the internal tissue anatomy of bivalve molluscs (Perna perna) from mariculture farms. The sequence of their toxicities to S. costatum, based on growth inhibition, was nano zinc oxide (nZnO) > nTiO2 (rutile) > nMgO > Annealed nMgO > nTiO2 (anatase) > γ-nAl2O3 > nIn2O3 > α-nAl2O3 > nSnO2. Similarly, nZnO was also the most toxic to B. koreanus, but the other nano metal oxides were non-lethal. nMgO and nZnO were confirmed to trigger reactive oxygen species (ROS) mediated toxicity to the two marine organisms, while nTiO2 (both anatase and rutile forms) likely induced oxidative stress as shown by their acellular ROS production. nZnO may also cause damage in the endocrine system of B. koreanus, as indicated by the increased transcription of retinoid X receptor. Annealed nMgO reduces its toxicity via removal of O2- and impurities from its surface. Denitrification is an important pathway for reactive nitrogen removal from aquatic ecosystems. In this study, the biodiversity, abundance, and activity of cytochrome cd1-type nitrate reductase gene (nirS)-harboring denitrifiers in the sediments of the Indus River Estuary were examined by molecular and isotope-tracing techniques. Results showed that the nirS-harboring denitrifier communities showed significant geographical variations along the estuarine salinity gradient. Real-time quantitative PCR showed that the abundance of nirS-harboring denitrifiers ranged from 5.3 × 106 to 2.5 × 108 copies g-1, without significant spatiotemporal variation. The potential rates of denitrification varied from 0.01 to 6.27 μmol N kg-1 h-1 and correlated significantly to TOC and Fe(II) (P less then 0.05). On the basis of 15N isotope-tracing experiments, the denitrification process contributed 18.4-99.4% to the total nitrogen loss in the sediments of the Indus River Estuary. This study provides novel insights into the microbial mechanism of nitrogen removal process in estuarine ecosystems. The heavy metal pollution status of oyster reefs has been assessed with respect to ten metals pollutants in seawater, sediments, and tissues of above two oysters (soft tissues and shells) for assessing the pollution status in a short food chain in Hab River Delta. The results showed that heavy metals accumulated in M. bilineata were higher than those in M. cuttackensis. Simultaneously, the population of M. bilineata species has been ironically decreasing as a results of high pollution. The determined concentrations revealed a significant differences in their profiles among sediments, seawater and bioaccumulation in tissues and shells of two native oysters. The present study also compared these metal concentrations with national and international database by applying different pollution indices. Heavy metals in all samples were above the national environmental quality standards (NEQS-Pakistan). High level of pollution with an alarming condition of Hab River Delta need more attention for coastal management.

ere listed on the ClinicalTrials.gov website.Cancer immunotherapy has been revolutionized by the development of monoclonal antibodies (mAbs) that inhibit interactions between immune checkpoint molecules, such as programmed cell-death 1 (PD-1), and its ligand PD-L1. https://www.selleckchem.com/products/pentetic-acid.html However, mAb-based drugs have some drawbacks, including poor tumor penetration and high production costs, which could potentially be overcome by small molecule drugs. BMS-8, one of the potent small molecule drugs, induces homodimerization of PD-L1, thereby inhibiting its binding to PD-1. Our assay system revealed that BMS-8 inhibited the PD-1/PD-L1 interaction with IC50 of 7.2 μM. To improve the IC50 value, we designed and synthesized a small molecule based on the molecular structure of BMS-8 by in silico simulation. As a result, we successfully prepared a biphenyl-conjugated bromotyrosine (X) with IC50 of 1.5 μM, which was about five times improved from BMS-8. We further prepared amino acid conjugates of X (amino-X), to elucidate a correlation between the docking modes of the amino-Xs and IC50 values. The results suggested that the displacement of amino-Xs from the BMS-8 in the pocket of PD-L1 homodimer correlated with IC50 values. There remains the possibility that the described clinical manifestations of AO-GHD may not be due to GHD alone, but may also be related to underlying pituitary pathology, treatment history and suboptimal hormone replacement. Colorectal cancer demands a considerable amount of medical resources. Therefore, the redefinition of its diagnostic and therapeutic algorithms with a rigorous method is crucial in order to ensure the highest quality of continuum of care in the broader context of the pandemic and the challenged healthcare systems.Background The COVID-19 epidemic has affected over 2.6 million people across 210 countries. Recent studies have shown that patients with COVID-19 experience relevant gastrointestinal (GI) symptoms. We aimed to perform a systematic review and meta-analysis on the GI symptoms of COVID-19. Methods A literature search was conducted via electronic databases, including PubMed, Embase, Scopus, and Google Scholar, from inception until 20 March 2020. Data were extracted from relevant studies. A systematic review of GI symptoms and a meta-analysis comparing symptoms in severe and non-severe patients was performed using RevMan V.5.3. Results Pooled data from 2477 patients with a reverse transcription-PCR-positive COVID-19 infection across 17 studies were analysed. Our study revealed that diarrhoea (7.8%) followed by nausea and/or vomiting (5.5 %) were the most common GI symptoms. We performed a meta-analysis comparing the odds of having GI symptoms in severe versus non-severe COVID-19-positive patients. 4 studies for nausea and/or vomiting, 5 studies for diarrhoea and 3 studies for abdominal pain were used for the analyses. There was no significant difference in the incidence of diarrhoea (OR=1.32, 95% CI 0.8 to 2.18, Z=1.07, p=0.28, I2=17%) or nausea and/or vomiting (OR=0.96, 95% CI 0.42 to 2.19, Z=0.10, p=0.92, I2=55%) between either group. However, there was seven times higher odds of having abdominal pain in patients with severe illness when compared with non-severe patients (OR=7.17, 95% CI 1.95 to 26.34, Z=2.97, p=0.003, I2=0%). Therefore, the redefinition of its diagnostic and therapeutic algorithms with a rigorous method is crucial in order to ensure the highest quality of continuum of care in the broader context of the pandemic and the challenged healthcare systems.Background The COVID-19 epidemic has affected over 2.6 million people across 210 countries. Recent studies have shown that patients with COVID-19 experience relevant gastrointestinal (GI) symptoms. We aimed to perform a systematic review and meta-analysis on the GI symptoms of COVID-19. Methods A literature search was conducted via electronic databases, including PubMed, Embase, Scopus, and Google Scholar, from inception until 20 March 2020. Data were extracted from relevant studies. A systematic review of GI symptoms and a meta-analysis comparing symptoms in severe and non-severe patients was performed using RevMan V.5.3. Results Pooled data from 2477 patients with a reverse transcription-PCR-positive COVID-19 infection across 17 studies were analysed. Our study revealed that diarrhoea (7.8%) followed by nausea and/or vomiting (5.5 %) were the most common GI symptoms. We performed a meta-analysis comparing the odds of having GI symptoms in severe versus non-severe COVID-19-positive patients. 4 studies for nausea and/or vomiting, 5 studies for diarrhoea and 3 studies for abdominal pain were used for the analyses. There was no significant difference in the incidence of diarrhoea (OR=1.32, 95% CI 0.8 to 2.18, Z=1.07, p=0.28, I2=17%) or nausea and/or vomiting (OR=0.96, 95% CI 0.42 to 2.19, Z=0.10, p=0.92, I2=55%) between either group. However, there was seven times higher odds of having abdominal pain in patients with severe illness when compared with non-severe patients (OR=7.17, 95% CI 1.95 to 26.34, Z=2.97, p=0.003, I2=0%). Conclusion Our study has reiterated that GI symptoms are an important clinical feature of COVID-19. With the extracted extracellular volume fraction and water molecule diffusivity, we directly reconstruct the low-frequency electrical properties including the extracellular mean conductivity and extracellular conductivity tensor. To demonstrate the proposed method by comparing the ion concentration and the ion mobility, we conducted human experiments for the proposed low-frequency conductivity imaging. Human experiments verify that the proposed method can recover the low-frequency electrical properties using a conventional MRI scanner.A new species of encyrtid wasp, Metaphycus macadamiae Polaszek & Noyes sp. n., (Hymenoptera Encyrtidae Encyrtinae) is described as a solitary endoparasitoid of the invasive macadamia felted coccid, Acanthococcus ironsidei (Hemiptera Eriococcidae) in Hawaii. This parasitoid is native to Australia, and the species description is based on material collected from a Macadamia integrifolia Maiden & Betche (Proteaceae) plantation in New South Wales, Australia, the native region of the host tree and insect. It is described here because it is a potential biological control agent against this pest where it has recently invaded Hawaii and South Africa.Animal and human helminth infections are highly prevalent around the world, with only few anthelminthic drugs available. The anthelminthic drug performance is expressed by the cure rate and the egg reduction rate. However, which kind of mean should be used to calculate the egg reduction rate remains a controversial issue. We visualized the distributions of egg counts of different helminth species in 7 randomized controlled trials and asked a panel of experts about their opinion on the egg burden and drug efficacy of two different treatments. Simultaneously, we calculated infection intensities and egg reduction rates using different types of means arithmetic, geometric, trimmed, winsorized and Hölder means. Finally, we calculated the agreement between expert opinion and the different means. We generated 23 different trial arm pairs, which were judged by 49 experts. Among all investigated means, the arithmetic mean showed poorest performance with only 64% agreement with expert opinion (bootstrap confidence interval [CI] 60-68). Highest agreement of 94% (CI 86-96) was reached by the Hölder mean M0.2, followed by the geometric mean (91%, CI 85-94). Winsorized and trimmed means showed a rather poor performance (e.g. winsorization with 0.1 cut-off showed 85% agreement, CI 78-87), but they performed reasonably well after excluding treatment arms with a small number of patients. In clinical trials with moderate sample size, the currently recommended arithmetic mean does not necessarily rank anthelminthic efficacies in the same order as might be obtained from expert evaluation of the same data. Estimates based on the arithmetic mean should always be reported together with an estimate, which is more robust to outliers, e.g. the geometric mean.BACKGROUND The burden of diabetes is increasing in sub-Saharan Africa, including among people living with HIV. WHO guidelines for haemoglobin A1c (HbA1c) and oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT) were used to define diabetes and prediabetes. Risk factors were evaluated using multinomial logistic regression analysis. Relative risk ratios (RRR) were generated comparing participants with diabetes and prediabetes against the reference of those with no diabetes. The use of biological agents that can fix atmospheric N has shown potential to improve nutrient availability in grass crops. This research was developed to investigate if inoculation with Azospirillum brasilense in combination with silicon (Si) can enhance N use efficiency (NUE) in maize. The study was set up in a Rhodic Hapludox under a no-till system, in a completely randomized block design with four replicates. Treatments were tested in a full factorial design and included i) five side dress N rates (0 to 200 kg ha-1); ii) two liming sources (Ca and Mg silicate and dolomitic limestone); and iii) with and without seed inoculation with A. brasilense. Inoculation with A. brasilense was found to increase grain yield by 15% when N was omitted and up to 10% when N was applied. Inoculation also increased N accumulation in plant tissue. Inoculation and limestone application were found to increase leaf chlorophyll index, number of grains per ear, harvest index, and NUE. Inoculation increased harvest index and NUE by 9.5 and 19.3%, respectively, compared with non-inoculated plots. Silicon application increased leaf chlorophyll index and N-leaf concentration. The combination of Si and inoculation provided greater Si-shoot accumulation. This study showed positive improvements in maize growth production parameters as a result of inoculation, but the potential benefits of Si use were less evident. Further research should be conducted under growing conditions that provide some level of biotic or abiotic stress to study the true potential of Si application.

.Background Tramadol is one of the most extensively used centrally acting synthetic opioid analgesics. Recently, a number of studies have explored the associations of the CYP2D6*10 C188T polymorphism with pharmacokinetic and clinical outcomes of tramadol. However, the results of these previous reports remain controversial. Therefore, a meta-analysis was needed to reach a consensus. Methods PubMed, EMBASE, and the Cochrane Library were searched to identify eligible studies that explored the influence of the CYP2D6*10 C188T polymorphism on clinical outcomes of tramadol through April 2019. Articles meeting the inclusion criteria were comprehensively reviewed by two independent evaluators. A meta-analysis was performed using Review Manager 5.3. Results A total of nine studies involving 809 related subjects were included in this meta-analysis. Significant associations were found between CYP2D6*10 C188T mutation and longer serum tramadol half-lives, larger AUC0-∞, and the slower clearance rate of tramadol. In addition, we also found that CYP2D6*10 C188T had effects on the pharmacokinetic parameters of the metabolite of tramadol, O-desmethyltramadol, by sensitive analysis. Furthermore, CYP2D6*10 C188T polymorphism was associated with higher visual analog scale score, loading dose, and total consumption of tramadol. There was no significant association between CYP2D6*10 C188T polymorphism and postoperative nausea and vomiting. Baseline sociodemographic and clinical characteristics were collected, and the number of IBD-related ER and hospital visits were recorded over the 1-year period after the initial clinic encounter. Patients with ≥2 visits (high utilizers) were compared with those with no visits. Results Of the 735 patients included in the final analysis, 106 (14.4%) were high utilizers, and they had a mean of 2.9 visits (maximum = 10) in the 1 year after their initial encounter. In multivariate analysis, insurance coverage through medical assistance (odds ratio [OR] 3.57; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.38-9.20), steroid use (OR 1.83; 95% CI, 1.11-3.04), short inflammatory bowel disease questionnaire score less then 50 (OR 2.29; 95% CI, 1.23-4.27), and current ostomy (OR 4.82; 95% CI, 1.51-15.37) were independently associated with high utilization. Correlations between cortical structure and reading-related skills were conducted using a surface-based vertex-wise approach. Cortical thickness in the left superior temporal cortex was positively correlated with word and pseudoword reading performance. .Background Tramadol is one of the most extensively used centrally acting synthetic opioid analgesics. Recently, a number of studies have explored the associations of the CYP2D6*10 C188T polymorphism with pharmacokinetic and clinical outcomes of tramadol. However, the results of these previous reports remain controversial. Therefore, a meta-analysis was needed to reach a consensus. Methods PubMed, EMBASE, and the Cochrane Library were searched to identify eligible studies that explored the influence of the CYP2D6*10 C188T polymorphism on clinical outcomes of tramadol through April 2019. Articles meeting the inclusion criteria were comprehensively reviewed by two independent evaluators. A meta-analysis was performed using Review Manager 5.3. Results A total of nine studies involving 809 related subjects were included in this meta-analysis. Significant associations were found between CYP2D6*10 C188T mutation and longer serum tramadol half-lives, larger AUC0-∞, and the slower clearance rate of tramadol. In addition, we also found that CYP2D6*10 C188T had effects on the pharmacokinetic parameters of the metabolite of tramadol, O-desmethyltramadol, by sensitive analysis. Furthermore, CYP2D6*10 C188T polymorphism was associated with higher visual analog scale score, loading dose, and total consumption of tramadol. There was no significant association between CYP2D6*10 C188T polymorphism and postoperative nausea and vomiting. Baseline sociodemographic and clinical characteristics were collected, and the number of IBD-related ER and hospital visits were recorded over the 1-year period after the initial clinic encounter. Patients with ≥2 visits (high utilizers) were compared with those with no visits. Results Of the 735 patients included in the final analysis, 106 (14.4%) were high utilizers, and they had a mean of 2.9 visits (maximum = 10) in the 1 year after their initial encounter. In strains with reliable gene annotations, copy number variation (CNV) and differential transposable element insertions distinguish one structurally distinct version of the Sdic region per strain. All 31 annotated copies featured protein-coding potential and, based on the protein variant encoded, were categorized into 13 paratypes differing in their 3' ends, with 3-5 paratypes coexisting in any strain examined. Despite widespread gene conversion, the only copy present in all strains has functionally diverged at both coding and regulatory levels under positive selection. Contrary to artificial tandem duplications of the Sdic region that resulted in increased male expression, CNV in cosmopolitan strains did not correlate with expression levels, likely as a result of differential genome modifier composition. Here, we use 296 individuals representing 142 global populations from the Simons Genome Diversity Project (SGDP) to discover and characterize MEI diversity from deeply sequenced whole genome data. We report 5,742 MEIs not originally reported by the 1000 Genomes Project and show that high sampling diversity leads to a four to seven-fold increase in MEI discovery rates over the original 1000 Genomes Project data. As a result of negative selection, non-reference polymorphic MEIs are under-represented within genes, and MEIs within genes are often found in the transcriptional orientation opposite that of the gene. Globally, 80% of Alu subfamilies predate the expansion of modern humans from Africa. Polymorphic MEIs show heterozygosity gradients that decrease from Africa to Eurasia to the Americas, and the number of MEIs found uniquely in a single individual are also distributed in this general pattern. The maximum fraction of MEI diversity partitioned among the seven major SGDP population groups (FST) is 7.4%, similar to, but slightly lower than, previous estimates and likely attributable to the diverse sampling strategy of the SGDP. Especially it is linked to protecting, together with the xanthophyll lutein, the retina in the human eye by filtering harmful blue light thus delaying the progression of age-related macular degeneration (AMD), the most prevalent cause of blindness in developed countries. Despite its high nutritional value, zeaxanthin is less available than other substantial carotenoids in our diet. To solve this shortage, we chose to develop a new food source that would contain a high concentration of natural zeaxanthin. Tomato (Solanum lycopersicum L.) was selected as the target plant since it is the second largest vegetable crop grown worldwide and its fruit characteristically synthesizes and accumulates a high concentration of carotenoids. We employed two genetic approaches in order to enhance zeaxanthin biosynthesis in tomato fruit a transgenic metabolic engineering and classical genetic breeding. A nontransgenic tomato line, named 'Xantomato', was generated whose fruit accumulated zeaxanthin at a concentration of 39 μg/g fresh weight (or 577 μg/g dry weight), which comprised ca. 50% of total fruit carotenoids compared to zero in the wild type. This is the highest concentration of zeaxanthin reached in a primary crop. Xantomato can potentially increase zeaxanthin availability in the human diet and serve as raw material for industrial applications. © 2020 The Authors. However, with the growth enhancement common to crops grown under elevated atmospheric CO2 concentrations (e[CO2 ]), there is a risk that too **** early growth might deplete soil water and lead to more severe terminal drought stress in environments where production relies on stored soil water content. If this is the case, the incorporation of such a trait in wheat breeding programmes might have unintended negative consequences in the future, especially in dry years. We used selected data from cultivars with proven expression of high and low early vigour from the Australian Grains Free Air CO2 Enrichment (AGFACE) facility, and complemented this analysis with simulation results from two crop growth models which differ in the modelling of leaf area development and crop water use. Grain yield responses to e[CO2 ] were lower in the high early vigour group compared to the low early vigour group, and although these differences were not significant, they were corroborated by simulation model results. However, the simulated lower response with high early vigour lines was not caused by an earlier or greater depletion of soil water under e[CO2 ] and the mechanisms responsible appear to be related to an earlier saturation of the radiation intercepted. Whether this is the case in the field needs to be further investigated. In addition, there was some evidence that the timing of the drought stress during crop growth influenced the effect of e[CO2 ] regardless of the early vigour trait. The aggregated results of the studies showed that psycho-social and educational interventions elevated adherence rate in both peritoneal dialysis (PD) and haemodialysis (HD) patients. For physiological and biochemical indicators, meta-analysis revealed that significant post-treatment effects were evident for interdialytic weight gain (IDWG), IDWG/dry weight, serum potassium, phosphate, creatinine and blood urea nitrogen (BUN), except for albumin.

Especially it is linked to protecting, together with the xanthophyll lutein, the retina in the human eye by filtering harmful blue light thus delaying the progression of age-related macular degeneration (AMD), the most prevalent cause of blindness in developed countries. Despite its high nutritional value, zeaxanthin is less available than other substantial carotenoids in our diet. To solve this shortage, we chose to develop a new food source that would contain a high concentration of natural zeaxanthin. Tomato (Solanum lycopersicum L.) was selected as the target plant since it is the second largest vegetable crop grown worldwide and its fruit characteristically synthesizes and accumulates a high concentration of carotenoids. We employed two genetic approaches in order to enhance zeaxanthin biosynthesis in tomato fruit a transgenic metabolic engineering and classical genetic breeding. A nontransgenic tomato line, named 'Xantomato', was generated whose fruit accumulated zeaxanthin at a concentration of 39 μg/g fresh weight (or 577 μg/g dry weight), which comprised ca. 50% of total fruit carotenoids compared to zero in the wild type. This is the highest concentration of zeaxanthin reached in a primary crop. Xantomato can potentially increase zeaxanthin availability in the human diet and serve as raw material for industrial applications. © 2020 The Authors. However, with the growth enhancement common to crops grown under elevated atmospheric CO2 concentrations (e[CO2 ]), there is a risk that too much early growth might deplete soil water and lead to more severe terminal drought stress in environments where production relies on stored soil water content. If this is the case, the incorporation of such a trait in wheat breeding programmes might have unintended negative consequences in the future, especially in dry years. We used selected data from cultivars with proven expression of high and low early vigour from the Australian Grains Free Air CO2 Enrichment (AGFACE) facility, and complemented this analysis with simulation results from two crop growth models which differ in the modelling of leaf area development and crop water use. Grain yield responses to e[CO2 ] were lower in the high early vigour group compared to the low early vigour group, and although these differences were not significant, they were corroborated by simulation model results. However, the simulated lower response with high early vigour lines was not caused by an earlier or greater depletion of soil water under e[CO2 ] and the mechanisms responsible appear to be related to an earlier saturation of the radiation intercepted. Whether this is the case in the field needs to be further investigated. In addition, there was some evidence that the timing of the drought stress during crop growth influenced the effect of e[CO2 ] regardless of the early vigour trait. There is a need for FACE investigations of the value of traits for drought adaptation to be conducted under more severe drought conditions and variable timing of drought stress, a risky but necessary endeavour. © 2020 John Wiley & Sons Ltd.AIMS AND OBJECTIVES To examine the influence of psycho-social and educational interventions on improving adherence to dialysis for patients with end-stage renal disease. The aggregated results of the studies showed that psycho-social and educational interventions elevated adherence rate in both peritoneal dialysis (PD) and haemodialysis (HD) patients.
