Systems biology unravels the black box of signaling pathway of cells; but which has not been extensively applied to reveal the mechanistic synergy of a herbal formula. The therapeutic efficacies of a herbal formula having multi-target, multi-function and multi-pathway are the niches of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM). Here, we reported an integrated omics approach, coupled with the knockout of an active compound, to measure the regulation of cellular signaling, as to reveal the landscape in cultured rat osteoblasts having synergistic pharmacological efficacy of Danggui Buxue Tang (DBT), a Chinese herbal formula containing Angelicae Sinensis Radix and Astragali Radix. The changes in signaling pathways responsible for energy metabolism, RNA metabolism and protein metabolism showed distinct features between DBT and calycosin-depleted DBT. Here, our results show that calycosin within DBT can orchestrate the osteoblastic functions and signaling pathways of the entire herbal formula. Glioblastoma (GBM) is a highly immunosuppressive and deadly malignant tumor with poor responses to immunotherapies. Although CAR-T therapeutic strategies were used for glioma in preclinical trials, the current proliferation activity of CAR-T is not sufficient, and malignant glioma usually recruit immunosuppressive cells to form a tumor microenvironment that hinders CAR-T infiltration, depletes CAR-T, and impairs their efficacy. Moreover, specific environments such as hypoxia and nutritional deficiency can hinder the killing effect of CAR-T, limiting their therapeutic effect. The normal brain lack lymphocytes, but CAR-T usually can recognize specific antigens and regulate the tumor immune microenvironment to increase and decrease pro- and anti-inflammatory factors, respectively. This increases the number of T cells and ultimately enhances anti-tumor effects. CAR-T therapy has become an indispensable modality for glioma due to the specific tumor-associated antigens (TAAs). This review describes the characteristics of CAR-T specific antigen recognition and changing tumor immune microenvironment, as well as ongoing research into CAR-T therapy targeting TAAs in GBM and their potential clinical application.Bazi Bushen capsule (BZBS), as a Chinese medicine used to relieve fatigue, has been proven effective for the treatment of atherogenesis through antilipid effects. To investigate the potential mechanism of BZBS in the anti-atherosclerotic effect, Ovx/ApoE-/- **** were applied to investigate the anti-atherosclerotic efficiency and potential mechanism of BZBS. Therapeutic effect was evaluated based on the number of CD68+ and CD3+ cells, the level of intercellular adhesion molecule-1 (ICAM-1) and vascular cell adhesion molecule-1 (VCAM-1), and the ratio of cleaved caspase-3/caspase-3, as well as increasing ratio of Bcl2/Bax. Human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVECs) were chosen to evaluate the role of GPER1. Treatment with BZBS reduced lipid deposition by reducing the numbers of CD68+ and CD3+ cells, the level of ICAM-1 and VCAM-1, and the ratio of cleaved caspase-3/caspase-3, and increasing the ratio of Bcl2/Bax as compared with the control group. In si-GPER1-treated HUVECs, the anti-apoptotic effect of BZBS was decreased. This study revealed that BZBS exhibited a clear effect against atherogenesis via GPER1-dependent anti-inflammatory and anti-apoptotic mechanisms. We believe that this manuscript is informative and useful for researchers pursuing the related alleviation of post-menopausal AS via anti-inflammatory and anti-apoptotic mechanisms.The effect of cream and gel vehicles containing clove water on skin permeability was compared for a new eugenol derivative (eugenyl dichloroacetate-EDChA) with antioxidant activity. In vitro permeation experiments were conducted in a Franz cell with porcine skin. The cumulative mass and skin accumulation of EDChA were investigated and compared. The antioxidative capacity of the studied vehicles was determined by using the diphenylpicrylhydrazyl (DPPH) free radical reduction method. The antioxidant activity (evaluated with DPPH, ABTS, and the Folin-Ciocalteu methods) of the fluid that penetrated through the pig skin and of the fluid obtained after the skin extraction, were also determined. For comparison, eugenol was also tested. The results of this work could contribute to the development of vehicles with antioxidant potential estimated after 24 h of conducting the experiment, which indicates long-term protection against reactive oxygen species (ROS) in the deeper layers of the skin. The waste water from the clove buds steam distillation -contains several valuable biologically active compounds, and its use is environmentally friendly.

We propose some recommendations to help clinicians in the decision-making process as technological improvements make both surgical and transcatheter therapies viable options for patients with aortic stenosis. Finally, we assess the role of finite element analysis in patient selection for aortic valve replacement. THVT and AVR-S are both useful tools in the armamentarium against aortic stenosis. The decision between the two treatment strategies should be best guided by a strong robust evidence base, ideally with a long-term follow-up. This is best performed by the heart team with the patient as the center of the discussion.Safflower flowers (Carthamus tinctorius) contain many natural substances with a wide range of economic uses. The most famous dye isolated from flower petals is hydroxysafflor A (HSYA), which has antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, and antioxidant properties. This review is aimed at updating the state of knowledge about their applicability in oncology, pulmonology, cardiology, gynecology, dermatology, gastrology, immunology, and suitability in the treatment of obesity and diabetes and its consequences with information published mainly in 2018-2020. They were also effective in treating obesity and diabetes and its consequences. The issues related to the possibilities of using HSYA in the production of health-promoting food were also analyzed.The R2R3-MYB family is one of the largest plant transcription factor (TF) families playing vital roles in defense, plant growth, and secondary metabolism biosynthesis. Although this gene family has been studied in many species, isoflavonoid biosynthesis-related R2R3-MYB TFs in Callerya speciosa (Champ. ex Benth.) Schot, a traditional Chinese medicinal herb, are poorly understood. Here, a total of 101 R2R3-MYB TFs were identified from C. speciosa transcriptome dataset. 25 clades divided into five functional groups were clustered based on the sequence similarity and phylogenetic tree. Conserved motifs and domain distribution, expression patterns, and coexpression networks were also employed to identify the potential R2R3-MYB TFs in the regulation of isoflavonoid biosynthesis. In silico evaluation showed that the deduced R2R3-CsMYB proteins contain highly conserved R2R3 repeat domain at the N-terminal region, that is the signature motif of R2R3-type MYB TFs. Eight potential TFs (CsMYB17, CsMYB36, CsMYB41, CsMYB44, CsMYB45, CsMYB46, CsMYB72, and CsMYB81) had high degrees of coexpression with four key isoflavonoid biosynthetic genes (CsIFS, CsCHS7, CsHID-1, and CsCHI3), in which CsMYB36 as a potential regulator possessed the highest degree. HPLC analysis showed that formononetin and maackiain contents were significantly increased during the development of tuberous roots, which might be controlled by both related R2R3-CsMYBs and structural genes involved in the isoflavonoid biosynthesis pathway. The transcriptome data were further validated by reverse transcription real-time PCR (RT-qPCR) analysis, and similar expression profiles between TFs and key structural genes were identified. This study was the first step toward the understanding of the R2R3-MYB TFs regulating isoflavonoid biosynthesis in C. speciosa. The results will provide information for further functional analysis and quality improvement through genetic manipulation of these potential R2R3-CsMYB genes in C. speciosa.Professional engineering organizations (PEOs) have the potential to provide women and underrepresented and minoritized (URM) students with social capital (i.e., resources gained from relationships) that aids their persistence in their engineering undergraduate programs and into the workforce. We hypothesize that women and URM students engineering students who participate in PEOs are more likely to persist in their engineering major and that PEOs contribute to their persistence by providing them access to insider information that supports their persistence. Each year for five years we administered surveys with closed- and open-ended items to examine the association between participating in PEOs and the persistence of a cohort of engineering majors from 11 diverse universities. We used logistic regression and thematic analysis to analyze the data. URM students who participated in PEOs and other engineering related activities were more likely to persist to the second year than URM students who did not (adjusted odds ratio = 2.18, CI 1.09, 4.37). Students reported that PEOs contributed to their persistence by enabling them to network, reduce gender and race/ethnic isolation, and access professional resources. URM students should be encouraged to participate in PEOs beginning in their first year to increase their integration in their major, which we have found to increase their persistence.The decade of the 1990s marked the rise of postfeminism, a series of discursive, mediatized and intellectual interventions that furthered, but also broke away from, past forms of feminist theory and practice. https://www.selleckchem.com/products/caspofungin-acetate.html This period also witnessed the global proliferation of non-governmental organizations (NGOs) and the "NGOization" of feminism, referring to the cooption and erasure of critical social movements. Beyond their temporal instantiation in the 1990s, postfeminism and NGOization converge and entangle in everyday practices of women's NGOs and organizations. In this article, I examine such convergences and entanglements as they unfold in an NGO's community-based program to prevent violence against women and girls in Mumbai's urban poor neighborhoods. Such programs create new forms of femininity and womanhood among women who participate in interventions as frontline workers. These women navigate complex pressures of communitarian gender norms, disciplinary regimes of professionalization and quantification, and the vicarious harm of supporting survivors. Their affective caring labor, thus, is facilitated by and produces what I describe as interstitial intimacies, which problematize and embody key postfeminist claims, while engendering political actions and contestations under neoliberalism.At the United States-Mexico border, the impacts of immigration policy are dynamic with political, humanitarian, and health outcomes. This article highlights the experiences at the Casa Alitas migrant shelter in Tucson, Arizona. Casa Alitas aims to meet the needs of the im/migrants it serves, including the unique needs of indigenous asylum-seekers from Central America. We highlight the importance of community-based humanitarian response to support asylum-seekers in a way that acknowledges our shared humanity and implements specific approaches (e.g., language justice and trauma informed care). The effort at Casa Alitas is unique because in addition to other partnerships, Casa Alitas established an interprofessional collaboration between the University of Arizona Health Sciences Colleges and the Arizona State University School of Social Work. The interprofessional collaboration encourages mutual education amongst our professions and the use of our extended networks to meet the needs of im/migrants and asylum seekers in our community and the United States.

Black adults are diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease (AD) at higher rates than White adults. Biopsychosocial risk factors that differentially affect individuals by race, including health, education, and APOE e4, may explain these findings. Some research suggests that the risk for AD associated with the APOE e4 allele may differ by race. Gender differences in AD have also been identified but remain understudied. We examined race, APOE status, vascular risk factors, education, and the interaction of APOE e4 status and race as predictors of cognitive decline and the development of Alzheimer's disease between genders in a large longitudinal sample of older adults.
Participants (N = 4336) were selected from the National Alzheimer's Coordinating Center's Uniform Data Set who completed measures of verbal fluency, naming, and immediate/delayed story memory across 5 years. Analyses were stratified by gender. Follow up interactions examined statistical significance of differences.
APOE e4 by race interactions weseline measures. Race findings did not differ by gender. Hypertension was more strongly predictive of decline in delayed memory among women. Some countries, including Ethiopia, Botswana, Nigeria and Algeria, do not have national guidelines in place to adhere to the correct disposal of such wastage. Incineration is often the favoured disposal method due to the rapid diminishment of up to 90% of waste, as well as production of heat for boilers or for energy production. This type of method - if not applying the right technologies - potentially creates hazardous risks of its own, such as harmful emissions and residuals. In this study, the sustainability aspects of medical waste management in Africa were reviewed to present resilient solutions for health and environment protection for the next generation in Africa. The findings of this research introduce policies, possible advices and solutions associated with sustainability and medical waste management that can support decision-makers in developing strategies for the sustainability by using the eco-friendly technologies for efficient medical waste treatment and disposal methods and also can serve as a link between the healthcare system, decision-makers, and stakeholders in developing health policies and programmes.
Epigenetic alterations of genes involved in colorectal carcinogenesis are likely to be informative biomarkers for early detection. Children with Sickle Cell Disease (SCD), who are predominantly Black, face academic disparities in part because of the impact of longstanding racially biased education systems. Adverse systemic factors in addition to neurologic complications put children with SCD at risk for poor academic outcomes. Providing caregivers with information on how to select quality schools and advocate for their child's specific educational needs may influence academic outcomes and reduce educational disparities. We aimed to provide information to caregivers of children with SCD on school selection/quality, enrollment, and special education options.
Forty-six caregivers of children with SCD between the ages of 2 and 511 years participated in a structured informational session. Caregivers' sense of empowerment regarding educational options for their child was assessed via survey before and after the structured informational session.
Caregivers reported feeling more informed and empowered following their participation in an informational session on school selection/quality, enrollment, and special education options for their child than before the informational session.

We examined race, APOE status, vascular risk factors, education, and the interaction of APOE e4 status and race as predictors of cognitive decline and the development of Alzheimer's disease between genders in a large longitudinal sample of older adults. Participants (N = 4336) were selected from the National Alzheimer's Coordinating Center's Uniform Data Set who completed measures of verbal fluency, naming, and immediate/delayed story memory across 5 years. The effect of catalyst synthesis conditions such as carbonization temperature, sulfonation time, and H2SO4 concentration on the surface acidity of the catalyst and free fatty acid conversion was determined. The de-oiled microalgal biomass-based solid acid (DMB) catalyst was predominantly composed of carboxylic, phenolic, and sulfonic groups as indicated by the FTIR analysis and supported by the XPS analysis. The catalyst was further characterized by various methods to determine its physiochemical properties. A maximum fatty acid methyl ester (FAME) yield of 94.23% for microalgal oil (AO) and 96.25% for waste cooking oil (WCO) was obtained under optimized transesterification conditions. The catalyst exhibited high catalytic activity (FAME yield >90%) until the fourth cycle. Most of the biodiesel properties were within the permissible limit of EN 14,212 and ASTM D6751 standards.The current study demonstrates the enhanced production capability of strain Cupriavidus sp. ISTL7 for polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHA) using acetate and glucose (4.93 ± 0.4571 g L-1) which was characterised analytically by GC-MS, FTIR and NMR analysis. Whole genome sequencing of strain ISTL7 unveiled an array of PHA metabolism genes which included phaA, phaB and phaC. With the increase of temperature, the heavy metals transfer in biomass from the solid phase to the liquid phase increased, but most of them remain in the former. Therefore, further purification and treatment measures are worthy of attention.Composting is widely used as an easily operated and economical method to manage organic wastes. However, the long residence time of composting impedes the recycling nutrients from large amounts of organic wastes produced every day. In this study, the intelligent biodrying + continuous dynamic trough (IB + CDT) was created and used in China's first urban and rural organic waste treatment and utilization demonstration center in Suzhou city. Results showed that IB + CDT composting had higher temperature, more reduction of moisture than windrow composting, enhancing 40% of composting efficiency. Primary fermentation of the IB + CDT composting in the indoor conditions could achieve the harmless treatment (GI > 80%) of compost within 12 days. The IB + CDT composting product enhanced 17% soil organic matter and 11% available nitrogen. The IB + CDT composting mode could earn 57.6 USD/ton by recycling organic waste and producing organic fertilizer, leading to a sustainable and profitable mode.The resource utilization of biological solid waste is crucial for practical environmental remediation. Vitamin A (or retinol) has considerable antioxidative and anti-inflammatory attributes and it may have protective effects on the respiratory health of patients with cystic fibrosis (CF). This issue, however, remains controversial.
The purpose of the present study was to investigate the relationship between serum retinol levels (SRL) and force expiratory volume in 1 second (FEV1) in patients with CF.
All patients with pancreatic insufficiency attending the CF Department of "Agia Sofia" Children's Hospital in Athens, Greece, aged 6 to 19 years during the 2012-2016 period, who could perform spirometry effectively, were included in the study. The impact of SRL on FEV1 was examined longitudinally and analyzed with generalized estimating equations.
The study included 231 patients and 851 SRL measurements were performed. In 25 (3.2%) cases the SRL were below the 5th percentile of reference distribution; none was above the 95th percentile. The analysis showed that SRL was positively correlated with the FEV1 (
0.001).

Hypervirulent variants of
(hvKp) are capable of causing life-threatening pyogenic liver abscesses (PLAs), but hvKp caused PLAs was seldom reported in pediatric populations. Hence, there is an urgent need to raise our awareness of this phenomenon in pediatric populations.
This study aimed to report the clinical characteristics of hvKp that caused fatal PLA complicated by bacteremia in an adolescent and further identify the microbiological and genomic features of the causative strain.
A 14-year-old boy with diabetes mellitus was admitted to our hospital with a diagnosis of PLA complicated by bacteremia. A hypermucoviscous hvKp strain, KPN_19-106, was isolated from the drainage fluid present within the liver abscess cavity and blood. To analyze outcomes and toxicity in pediatric patients who exhibit Burkitt lymphoma with bone marrow involvement or Burkitt leukemia following treatment with the NHL-BFM-90/95 protocol.
Patients aged <18 years with bone marrow involvement/leukemia who were treated with the NHL-BFM-90/95 protocol, with or without rituximab, in Sun Yat-Sen University Cancer Center from April 2004 to December 2018 were included in this retrospective analysis.
Twenty-five patients were eligible. Burkitt lymphoma with bone marrow involvement and Burkitt leukemia were present in 10 and 15 patients, respectively. Central nervous system infiltration was not observed in any patients. All patients underwent chemotherapy involving NHL-BFM-90/95 protocol. Six courses of treatment were administered to each patient (v-AA-BB-CC-AA-BB-CC). The BFM-90/95 plus rituximab protocol was administered to 13 patients. The median follow-up interval was 31.9 months (range, 2.5-158 months). Of the 25 patients, four died three died of tumor progression and one died of therapy abandonment after relief of tumor lysis syndrome. The estimated 5-year event-free survival and overall survival rates were both 85.8% ± 5.0%.

Rhabdomyosarcoma (RMS) is the most common soft tissue sarcoma in children. More than 90% of cases are classified as embryonic RMS (ERMS) or alveolar RMS (ARMS). ERMS has a worse prognosis than ARMS. Early differential diagnosis is of paramount importance for optimization of treatment.
To identify genes that are differentially expressed between ARMS and ERMS, which can be used for accurate rhabdomyosarcoma classification.
Three Gene Expression Omnibus datasets composed of ARMS and ERMS samples were screened and 35 differentially expressed genes (DEGs) were identified. Receiver operating characteristic curve analysis and area under the curve analysis was performed for these 35 DEGs and seven candidate genes with the best differential expression scores between ARMS and ERMS were determined. Vitamin A (or retinol) has considerable antioxidative and anti-inflammatory attributes and it may have protective effects on the respiratory health of patients with cystic fibrosis (CF). This issue, however, remains controversial. The purpose of the present study was to investigate the relationship between serum retinol levels (SRL) and force expiratory volume in 1 second (FEV1) in patients with CF. All patients with pancreatic insufficiency attending the CF Department of "Agia Sofia" Children's Hospital in Athens, Greece, aged 6 to 19 years during the 2012-2016 period, who could perform spirometry effectively, were included in the study. The impact of SRL on FEV1 was examined longitudinally and analyzed with generalized estimating equations. The study included 231 patients and 851 SRL measurements were performed. In 25 (3.2%) cases the SRL were below the 5th percentile of reference distribution; none was above the 95th percentile. The analysis showed that SRL was positively correlated with the FEV1 ( 0.001). Neuropeptides are diverse signalling molecules in animals commonly acting through G-protein coupled receptors (GPCRs). Neuropeptides and their receptors underwent extensive diversification in bilaterians and the relationships of many peptide-receptor systems have been clarified. However, we lack a detailed picture of neuropeptide evolution in lophotrochozoans as in-depth studies only exist for molluscs and annelids. Here we analyse peptidergic systems in Nemertea, Brachiopoda and Phoronida. We screened transcriptomes from thirteen nemertean, six brachiopod and four phoronid species for proneuropeptides and neuropeptide GPCRs. With mass spectrometry from the nemertean Lineus longissimus, we validated several predicted peptides and identified novel ones. Molecular phylogeny combined with peptide-sequence and gene-structure comparisons allowed us to comprehensively map spiralian neuropeptide evolution. We found most mollusc and annelid peptidergic systems also in nemerteans, brachiopods and phoronids. We uncovered previously hidden relationships including the orthologies of spiralian CCWamides to arthropod agatoxin-like peptides and of mollusc APGWamides to RGWamides from annelids, with orthologues systems in nemerteans, brachiopods and phoronids. We found that pleurin neuropeptides previously only found in molluscs are also present in nemerteans and brachiopods. We also identified cases of gene family duplications and losses. These include a protostome-specific expansion of RFamide/Wamide signalling, a spiralian expansion of GnRH-related peptides, and duplications of vasopressin/oxytocin before the divergence of brachiopods, phoronids and nemerteans. This analysis expands our knowledge of peptidergic signalling in spiralians and other protostomes. We aimed not only to quantify the importance of threats and the relative influence of traits as viewed by sensory and wildlife experts, but to examine knowledge gaps based on the variation in responses. Identifying traits that had less consensus can guide future research for strengthening ecologists' and conservation biologists' understanding of sensory abilities. Our findings, based on 280 responses of expert opinion, highlight the increasing recognition among experts that sensory pollutants are important to consider in management and conservation decisions. Participant responses show mounting threats to species with narrow niches; especially habitat specialists, nocturnal species, and those with the greatest ability to differentiate environmental visual and auditory cues. Our results call attention to the threat specialist species face and provide a generalizable understanding of which species require additional considerations when developing conservation policies and mitigation strategies in a world altered by expanding sensory pollutant footprints. The discovery of ovothiol biosynthetic enzymes, sulfoxide synthase OvoA and β-lyase OvoB, paves the way for a systematic investigation of ovothiol distribution and molecular diversification in nature. In this work, we conducted genomic and metagenomics data mining to investigate the distribution and diversification of ovothiol biosynthetic enzymes in Bacteria. We identified the bacteria endowed with this secondary metabolic pathway, described their taxonomy, habitat and biotic interactions in order to provide insight into their adaptation to specific environments. We report that OvoA and OvoB are mostly encountered in marine aerobic Proteobacteria, some of them establishing symbiotic or parasitic relationships with other organisms. We identified a horizontal gene transfer event of OvoB from Bacteroidetes living in symbiosis with Hydrozoa. Our search within the Ocean Gene Atlas revealed the occurrence of ovothiol biosynthetic genes in Proteobacteria living in a wide range of pelagic and highly oxygenated environments. Finally, we tracked the evolutionary history of ovothiol biosynthesis from marine bacteria to unicellular eukaryotes and metazoans. Our analysis provides new conceptual elements to unravel the evolutionary and ecological significance of ovothiol biosynthesis.Urbanization drives phenotypic variation in many animal species. Here we present the results of an experiment in which we tested for differences in the glucocorticoid (CORT) response of urban and rural blue **** nestlings (Cyanistes caeruleus) to artificial light at night (ALAN). ALAN has been suggested to alter CORT response in several animal species, but to date no study has investigated whether this effect of ALAN differs between urban and rural populations.

This work provides a new route for achieving a BB-loaded and high-performance antibacterial suture, which is of great potential in applications for surgical operations.We propose a novel approach for building a classification/identification framework based on the full complement of RNA post-transcriptional modifications (rPTMs) expressed by an organism at basal conditions. The approach relies on advanced mass spectrometry techniques to characterize the products of exonuclease digestion of total RNA extracts. Sample profiles comprising identities and relative abundances of all detected rPTM were used to train and test the capabilities of different machine learning (ML) algorithms. Each algorithm proved capable of identifying rigorous decision rules for differentiating closely related classes and correctly assigning unlabeled samples. The ML classifiers resolved different members of the Enterobacteriaceae family, alternative Escherichia coli serotypes, a series of Saccharomyces cerevisiae knockout mutants, and primary cells of the Homo sapiens central nervous system, which shared very similar genetic backgrounds. The excellent levels of accuracy and resolving power achieved by training on a limited number of classes were successfully replicated when the number of classes was significantly increased to escalate complexity. A dendrogram generated from ML-curated data exhibited a hierarchical organization that closely resembled those afforded by established taxonomic systems. Finer clustering patterns revealed the extensive effects induced by the deletion of a single pivotal gene. This information provided a putative roadmap for exploring the roles of rPTMs in their respective regulatory networks, which will be essential to decipher the epitranscriptomics code. We herein report a plasmonic-sorbent thin-film platform with integrated Raman internal standard with outstanding SERS sensing capabilities for chemical warfare agents (CWA) simulants. The thin film is constituted of close-packed core-shell Au@Ag nanorods individually encapsulated within a ZIF-8 framework (Au@Ag@ZIF-8). While the Au@Ag nanoparticles amplify the Raman signal of molecules located near their surface, the ZIF-8 framework plays a key role in the trapping of the dimethyl methylphosphonate (DMMP) or 2-chloroethyl ethyl sulfide (CEES) from the gas phase as well as Raman internal standard. The underlying adsorption mechanism of the molecules within the ZIF-8 framework as well as the interaction between DMMP and Ag surface are investigated by computational simulations. Outstanding SERS sensing capabilities of Au@Ag@ZIF-8 thin films, in terms of response time, quantification limit, reproducibility, and recyclability, are demonstrated for dimethyl methylphosphonate (DMMP) and 2-chloroethyl ethyl sulfide (CEES), selected as CWA simulants of sarin gas and mustard gas, respectively. This study aimed to investigate the colonization of A. ferrooxidans in alkaline Fe ore tailings and its role in elemental sulfur (S0) oxidation, tailings neutralization, and Fe-bearing mineral weathering through a microcosm experiment. The effects of biological S0 oxidation on the weathering of alkaline Fe ore tailings were examined via various microspectroscopic analyses. It is found that (1) the A. ferrooxidans inoculum combined with the S0 amendment rapidly neutralized the alkaline Fe ore tailings; (2) A. ferrooxidans activities induced Fe-bearing primary mineral (e.g., biotite) weathering and secondary mineral (e.g., ferrihydrite and jarosite) formation; and (3) the association between bacterial cells and tailings minerals were likely facilitated by extracellular polymeric substances (EPS). The underlying adsorption mechanism of the molecules within the ZIF-8 framework as well as the interaction between DMMP and Ag surface are investigated by computational simulations. This study examined the contribution of the Apgar score at 1 and 5 min after birth to later cognitive functioning in 168 individuals with Down syndrome who were between 6 and 25 years of age at time of cognitive testing. Our results showed that a lower Apgar score at 1 min was related to a worse performance in later cognitive measures of receptive vocabulary, verbal comprehension and production, visual memory and working memory. Participants had no prior history of cardiovascular disease events, dementia or physical disability at enrolment. Variants were classified following ACMG/AMP standards. Sudden and rapid cardiac deaths were clinically adjudicated as ASPREE trial endpoints, and assessed during mean 4.7 years of follow-up. In total, 119 participants had pathogenic/deleterious variants in one of the 25 genes analysed (carrier rate of 1 in 110 or 0.9%). Participants carried variants associated with hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (N = 24), dilated cardiomyopathy (N = 29), arrhythmogenic right-ventricular cardiomyopathy (N = 22), catecholaminergic polymorphic ventricular tachycardia (N = 4), aortopathies (N = 1), and long-QT syndrome (N = 39). Among 119 carriers, two died from presumed sudden/rapid cardiac deaths during follow-up (1.7%); both with pathogenic variants in long-QT syndrome genes (KCNQ1, SCN5A). Among non-carriers, the rate of sudden/rapid cardiac deaths was significantly lower (0.08%, 11/12936, p less then 0.001). Transport of icebergs to the subtropics, away from deep water formation sites, may explain why H3 was associated with only a modest increase in ice-rafting across the subpolar North Atlantic, and implies a complex relationship between freshwater forcing and climate change. SARS-CoV-2 Variants concerning for enhanced transmission, evasion of immune responses, or associated with severe disease have motivated the global increase in genomic surveillance. In this study, large scale whole genome sequencing was performed between November 2020 and end of March 2021 to provide a phylodynamic analysis of circulating variants over-time. In addition, we compared the viral genomic features of March 2020 and March 2021.
A total of 1,600 complete SARS-CoV-2 genomes were analyzed. Genomic analysis was associated with laboratory diagnostic volumes and positivity rates in addition to an analysis of the association of selected variants of concern/ interest with disease severity and outcomes. Our real-time surveillance features a cohort of specimens from patients who tested positive after the completion of vaccination.
Our data showed genomic diversity over-time that was not limited to the Spike sequence. A significant increase in the B.1.1.7 lineage (alpha variant) in March 2021 as well as a transient circulation of regional variants that carried both the concerning S E484K and S P681H substitutions were noted. Lineage B.1.243 was significantly associated with ICU admission and mortality. Genomes recovered from fully-vaccinated individuals represented the predominant lineages circulating at specimen collection time, and those infections recovered with no hospitalizations.

The study sought to explore whether there are shared regional activations during both judgments of relative risk and relative benefit of various scenarios, thus being a potential candidate of the affect heuristic. Using functional magnetic resonance imaging, we developed a novel risk perception task, based on a preexisting behavioral task assessing the affect heuristic. A whole-brain voxel-wise analysis of a sample of participants (n = 42) during the risk and benefit conditions revealed overlapping clusters in the left insula, left inferior frontal gyrus, and left medial frontal gyrus across conditions. Extraction of parameter estimates of these clusters revealed that activity of these regions during both tasks was inversely correlated with a behavioral measure assessing the inclination to use the affect heuristic. More activity in these areas during risk judgments reflect individuals' ability to disregard momentary affective impulses. The insula may be involved in integrating viscero-somatosensory information and forming a representation of the current emotional state of the body, whereas activity in the left inferior frontal gyrus and medial frontal gyrus indicates that executive processes may be involved in inhibiting the impulse of making judgments in favor of deliberate risk evaluations.

Histone deacetylases (HDACs) and histone acetyltransferases (HAT) have an important role in the regulation of gene transcription as well as in the development and function of CD4 +Foxp3 + T regulatory (Treg) cells. Since others and we have previously reported that patients with autoimmune thyroid disease (AITD) show abnormalities in the levels and function of different Treg cell subsets, we decided to analyse the levels of expression of several HDACs and the Tip60 HAT in the thyroid gland and immune cells from these patients.
The expression of HDAC1-11 and the Tip60 HAT, at RNA and protein levels, were determined in thyroid tissue from 20 patients with AITD and 10 healthy controls and these findings were correlated with clinical data. HDAC9 and Tip60 levels were also analysed in thyroid cell cultures, stimulated or not with pro-inflammatory cytokines as well as in different cell subsets from peripheral blood mononuclear cells.

Since others and we have previously reported that patients with autoimmune thyroid disease (AITD) show abnormalities in the levels and function of different Treg cell subsets, we decided to analyse the levels of expression of several HDACs and the Tip60 HAT in the thyroid gland and immune cells from these patients. The expression of HDAC1-11 and the Tip60 HAT, at RNA and protein levels, were determined in thyroid tissue from 20 patients with AITD and 10 healthy controls and these findings were correlated with clinical data. HDAC9 and Tip60 levels were also analysed in thyroid cell cultures, stimulated or not with pro-inflammatory cytokines as well as in different cell subsets from peripheral blood mononuclear cells. Abdominal splenosis is a rare condition where autotransplanted ectopic spleen tissue is found in the abdominal cavity after spleen injury or splenectomy. While abdominal splenosis is mostly described as asymptomatic, bowel splenosis can present with abdominal pain, obstipation or gastrointestinal (GI) bleeding. Scarce information on bowel splenosis exists and high index of suspicion is needed for diagnosis. We present the case of a patient with abdominal pain and a cecal mass mimicking gastrointestinal stroma tumor (GIST) found to have bowel splenosis after laparoscopic resection.
A 45-year-old female was evaluated for a 6-month history of abdominal pain in right-lower quadrant. She had past medical history of blunt abdominal trauma and splenectomy 35years before symptoms. An abdominal contrast-enhanced computed tomography (CT) reported a 4.2×4.6×4.6cm solid mass located in the antimesenteric border of the cecum, with calcifications and arterial enhancement. Colonoscopy found no epithelial lesions. A diagnostic laparoscopy was done, and resection of the mass achieved. Transoperative histopathological diagnosis revealed ectopic spleen tissue.

The anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) is one of the most frequently injured structures of the knee joint. Anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction (ACLR) provides surgical restoration of the injured ACL using the placement of graft material. The choice of graft is principal in providing optimal knee stability after surgery. Peroneus longus tendon (PLT) is an autograft modality that offers unique benefits for ACL reconstruction cases.
We present a case of ACL reconstruction surgery using PLT graft in a patient with a confirmed ACL rupture. Assessment of post-surgical pain, knee stability, and ankle function were performed to determine functional outcome and donor site morbidity. The follow-up results revealed favorable recovery and improvement in all objective parameters.
Post-operative biomechanical outcomes were evaluated using the International Knee Documentation Committee (IKDC) and the American Orthopedic Foot and Ankle Score (AOFAS) score. The use of PLT in ACL reconstruction established an excellent potential for its satisfactory result and comparable to other graft modalities in widely used evidence-based findings.

Transverse Vaginal Septum (TVS) is a rare congenital abnormality, classified as the Mullerian duct anomaly development.
TVS incidence range from 12.000 to 172.000. Management of TVS may only requirement local excision with a simple end to end anastomosis of the vagina, and use of skin grafts, but this technique has been reported has common complications of secondary tissue contracture, which often lead to stenosis of the vagina.
In this case we managed TVS with simple flap technique to avoid such postoperative complications and maintain caliber of vagina.
A 11years old girl complained cyclical abdominal pain since a year ago without history of menstrual blood. Patient already had vaginal surgery for removing menstrual blood, but after vaginal surgery the menstrual blood cannot be removed, then referred to our hospital. Ultrasound examination revealed hematometra and hemocolpos. The septum location was 3,38cm proximal distance from vaginal introitus with the thickness of 8.1mm. We performed simple excision of the septum with formerly performed distal vaginal septum mucosa preparation creating lateral *****, then approximating the ***** to the edge of the proximal vaginal mucosa with interrupted suture continued with hymenorraphy. The patient has no complaint 6months after surgery with vaginal length 8cm, and had regular menstrual cycle.

Acute scrotum is considered a urological emergency requiring early intervention depending on the cause. There are multiple causes of acute scrotum with testicular torsion being the most feared as delayed treatment leads to testicular loss. However, differentiating between epididymo-orchitis and torsion can be very difficult.
We present a case of an 18-year old male patient with 2 separate episodes of acute scrotum. He had epididymo-orchitis as the first presentation followed by testicular torsion 5days later. To our knowledge this is the first case of testicular torsion secondary to epididymo-orchitis.
Differentiating between epididymo-orchitis and torsion is challenging but important due to risk of loss of testis with a wrong diagnosis. Once you establish epididymo-orchitis the suspicion for subsequent torsion should be high with close follow up and adequate counselling.
He ultimately had orchiectomy, although a rare presentation, enlarged testis due to epididymo-orchitis can predispose an individual to developing testicular torsion thus adequate counselling on warning signs to patients with epididymo-orchitis is of particular importance so as to intervene early and ultimately save the testis.

The aim of this systematic review and meta-analysis was to determine the effect of physical exercise on fall prevention and the characteristics required for effective exercise.
Systematic review and meta-analysis of randomised controlled trials.
Six databases (PubMed, Cochrane Library, Web of Science, Excerpta Medica Database, SinoMed and China National Knowledge Infrastructure) were searched to find the relevant randomised controlled trials published before January 2021. The study was reported in compliance with PRISMA statement. The included studies were assessed for quality using the Cochrane "Risk of Bias" assessment tool, and the data were analysed with review manager.
Overall, fourteen studies were included. Compared physical exercise with normal daily life, the pooled effect size of all trials indicated that intervention had significant effect on fall prevention (RR=0.85, 95% CI=0.73-0.98). The result of subgroup revealed that long-term exercise and balance exercise could reduce falling, while short-term exercise and more complex exercise couldn't.

Dermatobia hominis (D.hominis) is a botfly that causes furuncular myiasis in several species of domestic and wild animals. However, reports of feline infestation by larvae of this dipteran are rare.
To report the natural occurrence of furuncular myiasis caused by D.hominis in five cats and the efficacy of topical fluralaner for its treatment.
Five adult mixed-breed cats (four males, one female) were diagnosed and treated, all living in the state of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
The cats were treated with topical fluralaner. After this treatment, the larvae were dead after 24h in three cats and after 48h in two. There was spontaneous expulsion of larvae in two cats, and it was necessary to perform manual expression for removal of dead larvae in the other three cats.

Here, an artificial interface film of nitrogen (N)-doped graphene oxide (NGO) is one-step synthesized by a Langmuir-Blodgett method to achieve a parallel and ultrathin interface modification layer (≈120 nm) on Zn foil. The directional deposition of Zn crystal in the (002) planes is revealed because of the parallel graphene layer and beneficial zincophilic-traits of the N-doped groups. Meanwhile, through the in situ differential electrochemical mass spectrometry and in situ Raman tests, the directional plating morphology of metallic Zn at the interface effectively suppresses the hydrogen evolution reactions and passivation. The mean concentration for each individual carbonyl compound was between 0.3 and 8.3 μg/m3 (except for acrolein & acetone, average = 20.7 μg/m3 ) similar to the mean concentrations of other highly detected VOCs (long-chain (C6 -C16 ), 97% of which ranged in 0-10 μg/m3 ) in aircraft cabins. Formaldehyde concentrations in flights were significantly lower than in residential buildings, where construction materials are known formaldehyde sources. Acetone is a VOC emitted by humans, and its concentration in flights was similar to that in other high-occupant density transportation vehicles.
