We herein present the clinical course, laboratory and imaging findings of three patients - a female and two male patients, who were diagnosed with WNF. They were investigated in an epidemiological study, and by using clinical observation, laboratory and microbiological methods, serological tests for specific anti-WNV antibodies detection, molecular biology techniques (polymerase chain reaction, PCR), computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI).   • The capsid (CA) protein of the human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1) is an essential structural component of a virion and facilitates many crucial life cycle steps through interactions with host cell factors. Capsid shields the reverse transcription complex from restriction factors while it enables trafficking to the nucleus by hijacking various adaptor proteins, such as FEZ1 and BICD2. In addition, the capsid facilitates the import and localization of the viral complex in the nucleus through interaction with NUP153, NUP358, TNPO3, and CPSF-6. In the later stages of the HIV-1 life cycle, CA plays an essential role in the maturation step as a constituent of the Gag polyprotein. In the final phase of maturation, Gag is cleaved, and CA is released, allowing for the assembly of CA into a fullerene cone, known as the capsid core. The fullerene cone consists of ~250 CA hexamers and 12 CA pentamers and encloses the viral genome and other essential viral proteins for the next round of infection. As research continues to elucidate the role of CA in the HIV-1 life cycle and the importance of the capsid protein becomes more apparent, CA displays potential as a therapeutic target for the development of HIV-1 inhibitors.Mucociliary defense, mediated by the ciliated and goblet cells, is fundamental to respiratory fitness. Individuals living with chronic and acute respiratory diseases are more susceptible to develop severe coronavirus disease-19 (COVID-19) illness and hence should be proficiently managed. In light of the prevailing pandemic, we review the current understanding of the respiratory system and its molecular components with a major focus on the pathophysiology arising due to collapsed respiratory epithelium integrity such as abnormal ciliary movement, cilia loss and dysfunction, ciliated cell destruction, and changes in mucus rheology. The review includes protein interaction networks of coronavirus infection-manifested implications on the molecular machinery that regulates mucociliary clearance. We also provide an insight into the alteration of the transcriptional networks of genes in the nasopharynx associated with the mucociliary clearance apparatus in humans upon infection by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus-2.
    The Mediterranean diet (MD) could be involved in the regulation of different miRNAs related to metabolic syndrome (MS).

    We analyzed the serum level of mir-let7a-5p, mir-21, mir-590, mir-107 and mir-192 in patients with morbid obesity and its association with the MD and MS.

    There is an association between the adherence to MD and higher serum levels of mir-590. Mir-590 was lower in those patients who consumed >2 commercial pastries/week. Mir-let7a was lower in those who consumed ≥1 sweetened drinks, in those who consumed ≥3 pieces of fruit/day and in those who consumed less red than white meat. A lower mir-590 and mir-let7a, and a higher mir-192 level, were found in patients who met the high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL) criterion of MS. A higher mir-192 was found in those patients who met the triglyceride criterion of MS and in those with type 2 diabetes (T2DM).

    One major complication of the insertion of a peripheral venous catheter (PVC) is phlebitis, often resulting in delay of treatment, increased healthcare costs and prolonged hospitalization.

    The current study sought to evaluate the effectiveness of a standardized PVC care bundle in increasing the compliance of PVC care and assessment and reduce the occurrences of phlebitis rates.

    A pre and postimplementation audit approach was used in this study and adopted the Joanna Briggs Institute Practical Application of Clinical Evidence System and Getting Research into Practice program. This study was carried out in three phases over a 10-month period, from March 2017 to December 2017 across three medical wards in a hospital in Singapore with a sample size of 90 patients. The study involved educating nurses on phlebitis assessment, implementing a PVC care bundle and monitoring compliance. An audit tool comprising four criteria from the Joanna Briggs Institute Practical Application of Clinical Evidence System was den process of phlebitis and can aid in reducing the incidence of phlebitis. The nurses' compliance in practicing the PVC care bundle was determined by the post and preimplementation audits, thus, the audit approach was beneficial in translating evidence into practice.

    Treatment numbers of various cardiovascular diseases were reduced throughout the early phase of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. Aim of this study was to (a) expand previous study periods to examine the long-term course of hospital admission numbers, (b) provide data for in- and outpatient care pathways, and (c) illustrate changes of numbers of cardiovascular procedures.

    Administrative data of patients with ICD-10-encoded primary diagnoses of cardiovascular diseases (heart failure, cardiac arrhythmias, ischemic heart disease, valvular heart disease, hypertension, peripheral vascular disease) and in- or outpatient treatment between March, 13th 2020 and September, 10th 2020 were analyzed and compared with 2019 data. Numbers of cardiovascular procedures were calculated using OPS-codes. The cumulative hospital admission deficit (CumAD) was computed as the difference between expected and observed admissions for every week in 2020. In total, 80 hospitals contributed 294 361 patient cases to the database without relevant differences in baseline characteristics between the studied periods. There was a CumAD of -10% to -16% at the end of the study interval in 2020 for all disease groups driven to varying degrees by both reductions of in- and outpatient case numbers. The number of performed interventions was significantly reduced for all examined procedures (catheter ablations -10%; cardiac electronic device implantations -7%; percutaneous cardiovascular interventions -9%; cardiovascular surgery -15%).

The Y + B cultures improved the flavor and body and texture of LFC, especially at a ratio of 0.4 + 0.6% and 0.5 + 0.5%, which is similar to the typical full-fat Feta cheese. Also, the LFC maintained a higher number of probiotics and lactic acid bacteria after 30 d of storage at a range of 5 to 7 log cfu/g.The influence of aqueous ozone (1.4 mg/L) treatment for 1, 5, and 10 min on the microbial growth and quality attributes of fresh-cut cabbage during storage at 4°C for 12 days was evaluated. The pesticide residue removal effect of aqueous ozone treatment for 5 min was also determined. The results show that the growth rates of aerobic bacteria, coliforms, and yeasts were significantly inhibited (p less then .05) by aqueous ozone treatment during storage; treatment for 10 min showed the greatest inactivation of bacteria, coliforms, and molds. Aqueous ozone stimulated initial respiratory metabolism compared with that of the control. Aqueous ozone treatments reduced ethylene production and improved the overall quality of fresh-cut cabbage. DN **** were treated with recombinant protein of FoxO1. Afterward, inflammation ELISA kits were used to measure the levels of TNF-α, IL-1β, IL-6, and IL-18. The levels of MDA, ***, GSH, and GSH-PX were measured using kits according to the manufacturer's instructions. In addition, the production of ROS was assessed. Interestingly, the expression of FoxO1 was down-regulated in DN ****. The treatment of FoxO1 recombinant protein ameliorated MDA levels, increased the levels of ***, GSH, and GSH-PX, and induced both mRNA and protein expression of hepatic serine protease inhibitor B1 (serpinB1) in ND ****. When using carminic aluminum lake, surimi and milk were magenta, and minced meat was red. Regarding the carminic acid solution, the presence of myofibrillar protein (MFP), whey protein isolate (WPI), and soy protein isolate (SPI) turned it red by changing the pH, while the presence of casein made it orange. The carminic aluminum lake solution turned magenta in all four cases, which were not affected by protein. Also, the LFC maintained a higher number of probiotics and lactic acid bacteria after 30 d of storage at a range of 5 to 7 log cfu/g.The influence of aqueous ozone (1.4 mg/L) treatment for 1, 5, and 10 min on the microbial growth and quality attributes of fresh-cut cabbage during storage at 4°C for 12 days was evaluated. The pesticide residue removal effect of aqueous ozone treatment for 5 min was also determined. The results show that the growth rates of aerobic bacteria, coliforms, and yeasts were significantly inhibited (p less then .05) by aqueous ozone treatment during storage; treatment for 10 min showed the greatest inactivation of bacteria, coliforms, and molds. DN not only is a common complication of diabetes, but also takes an important place in kidney disease. To this end, the present study was designed to explore the effects of Forkhead box protein O1 (FoxO1) on reactive oxygen species (ROS) production in DN mice. DN mice were treated with recombinant protein of FoxO1. Afterward, inflammation ELISA kits were used to measure the levels of TNF-α, IL-1β, IL-6, and IL-18. The levels of MDA, SOD, GSH, and GSH-PX were measured using kits according to the manufacturer's instructions. In addition, the production of ROS was assessed. Interestingly, the expression of FoxO1 was down-regulated in DN mice. The treatment of FoxO1 recombinant protein ameliorated MDA levels, increased the levels of SOD, GSH, and GSH-PX, and induced both mRNA and protein expression of hepatic serine protease inhibitor B1 (serpinB1) in ND mice. Similarly, FoxO1 reduced MDA levels and ROS production, increased the levels of SOD, GSH, and GSH-PXs, and induced the mRNA and protein expression of serpinB1 in in vitro model of DN. The inhibition of serpinB1 attenuated the effects of FoxO1 on ROS production-induced oxidative stress in in vitro model of DN. The effects of protein, metal ions, and food additives on the color of carminic acid and carminic aluminum lake were investigated. After being dyed by carminic acid, the colors of surimi, minced meat, and milk were light purple, red, and gray-green, respectively. When using carminic aluminum lake, surimi and milk were magenta, and minced meat was red. Regarding the carminic acid solution, the presence of myofibrillar protein (MFP), whey protein isolate (WPI), and soy protein isolate (SPI) turned it red by changing the pH, while the presence of casein made it orange. The carminic aluminum lake solution turned magenta in all four cases, which were not affected by protein.   • The sphingosine 1-phosphate receptor type 1 (S1PR1) has several important functions, including stabilizing endothelial barrier and maintaining lymphocyte circulation. These functions are critically dependent on the regulation of S1PR1 cell surface expression. Currently available antibodies against human S1PR1 are not able to pick up cell surface expression on living cells by flow cytometry due to intracellular epitopes or unspecific binding. Here we describe the generation of a mouse monoclonal antibody specific for the N-terminal region of human S1PR1. It has an immunoglobulin M (IgM) kappa isotype and detects cell surface expression of recombinant human S1PR1 on overexpressing cells. Due to unspecific intracellular cell staining, it cannot be used for staining of dead cells and tissue slides or in microscopic analyses. It is also not suitable for Western blot analysis and immunoprecipitation. However, the antibody can stain for endogenous S1PR1 on human endothelial cell lines and primary human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVEC). Incubation of these cells with various S1PR1 agonists revealed potent S1PR1 internalization, which was not the case with the specific antagonist W146. The steady progression in the numerical modeling of RBCs, even in complex networks, has led to novel findings in the field of hemodynamics, especially concerning the impact and the dynamics of lingering events when a cell meets a branch of the network. However, these results are yet to be matched by a detailed analysis of the lingering experiments in vivo. To quantify this lingering effect in in vivo experiments, this study analyzes branching vessels in the microvasculature of Syrian golden hamsters via intravital microscopy and the use of an implanted dorsal skinfold chamber. It also presents a detailed analysis of these lingering effects of cells at the apex of bifurcating vessels, affecting the temporal distribution of plasmatic zones of blood flow in the branches and even causing a partial blockage in severe cases.Label-free imaging techniques such as differential interference contrast (DIC) allow the observation of cells and large subcellular structures in their native, unperturbed states with minimal exposure to light. The development of robust computational image-analysis routines is vital to quantitative label-free imaging. The reliability of quantitative analysis of time-series microscopy data based on single-particle tracking relies on accurately detecting objects as distinct from the background, i.e., segmentation. Typical approaches to segmenting DIC images either involve converting images to those resembling phase contrast, mimicking the optics of DIC object formation, or using the morphological properties of objects. Here, we describe MATLAB based, single-particle tracking tool with a GUI for mobility analysis of objects from in vitro and in vivo DIC time-series microscopy. The tool integrates contrast enhancement with multiple modified Gaussian filters, automated threshold detection for segmentation and miniellular mobility and in vitro microrheology.Physicochemical properties, such as solubility, are important when prioritising compounds for progression on a drug discovery project. There is limited literature around the systematic effects of core changes on thermodynamic solubility. This work details the synthesis of nitrogen containing 6,5-bicyclic heterocyclic cores which are common scaffolds in medicinal chemistry and the analysis of their physicochemical properties, particularly, thermodynamic solubility. Crystalline solids were obtained where possible to enable a robust comparison of the thermodynamic solubility. Other parameters such as pKa, melting point and lipophilicity were also measured to determine the key factors affecting the observed solubility.Huntington's disease (HD) is one of the serious neurodegenerative diseases and no disease modifiers are available to date. The correction of unbalanced kynurenine pathway metabolites may be useful to treat disease progression and kynurenine monooxygenase (KMO) is considered an ideal drug target.     The prevalence of autonomic neuropathy (AN) is high in patients with hereditary transthyretin amyloidosis but remains unknown in transthyretin wild-type cardiac amyloidosis (ATTRwt-CA). This study aimed to determine the prevalence of AN in patients with ATTRwt-CA using Sudoscan®, a non-invasive method used to provide evidence of AN in clinical practice and based on measurement of electrochemical skin conductance at the hands and feet (fESC).

    A series of 62 non-diabetic patients with ATTRwt-CA was prospectively included over 2years and compared with healthy elderly subjects, matched by age, gender, and body mass index. The presence of AN was defined as electrochemical skin conductance at the hands <60μS and/or fESC <70μS, and conductances were analysed according to clinical, biological, and echocardiographic data. Mean fESC was significantly lower in patients with ATTRwt-CA compared with elderly controls 68.3 (64.1-72.5) vs. 76.9 (75.6-78.1) μS (P<0.0001), respectively. Prevalence of fESC <70μS was higher in ATTRwt-CA patients than in controls 48.4% vs. 19.9%, P<0.05. Univariate analysis showed that fESC, N-terminal pro-B-type natriuretic peptide, creatinine plasma levels, and echocardiographic global longitudinal strain were associated with decompensated cardiac failure and death. Multivariate analysis revealed that fESC was an independent prognostic factor, and Kaplan-Meier estimator evidenced a greater occurrence of cardiac decompensation and death in patients with fESC <70μS, P=0.046.

In the solid-state, molecule 1 interacts with its neighbors via CH⋅⋅⋅N hydrogen bonding and π-π stacking. The microcrystals deposited at a glass surface exhibit moderate flexibility due to substantial surface adherence energy. The obtained network crystals also display mechanical compliance when cut precisely with sharp atomic force microscope cantilever tip, making them ideal candidates for building innovative T- and Δ-shaped optical junctions with multiple outputs.     To evaluate the antimicrobial efficacy and wound healing effect of atmospheric pressure cold plasma (APCP) on an infected pressure ulcer (IPUs) model that was created on rats.

    A total of 18 rats was divided into APCP, silver sulfadiazine (AgS) and control groups to have six rats in each group. A third-grade pressure ulcer model was developed on the **** of each of the rats, and pressure ulcers were infected by inoculation of multidrug resistance (MDR) Pseudomonas aeruginosa. A portable dielectric barrier discharge device was used to generate cold air plasma. APCP, AgS and saline treatments were carried out once a day for 14days. The effectiveness of the treatment was evaluated on days 5, 10 and 15. Surface area, depth, pressure ulcer healing scale (PUSH) and microbiological examination were used for evaluation.

    The results of this study showed that APCP was superior over AgS application and irrigation with saline by means of the reduction in surface area and depth of ulcers. Furthermore, PUSH score in plasma group was lower than other groups and histopathological examination showed a higher epithelization in APCP group. The average reductions of MDR P. aeruginosa for APCP, AgS and control groups were determined as 5·64±1·87, 1·91±0·90 and 1·22±0·88 log10 CFU per gram tissue, respectively.

Mean fESC was significantly lower in patients with ATTRwt-CA compared with elderly controls 68.3 (64.1-72.5) vs. 76.9 (75.6-78.1) μS (P<0.0001), respectively. Prevalence of fESC <70μS was higher in ATTRwt-CA patients than in controls 48.4% vs. 19.9%, P<0.05. Univariate analysis showed that fESC, N-terminal pro-B-type natriuretic peptide, creatinine plasma levels, and echocardiographic global longitudinal strain were associated with decompensated cardiac failure and death. To evaluate the antimicrobial efficacy and wound healing effect of atmospheric pressure cold plasma (APCP) on an infected pressure ulcer (IPUs) model that was created on rats. A total of 18 rats was divided into APCP, silver sulfadiazine (AgS) and control groups to have six rats in each group. A third-grade pressure ulcer model was developed on the back of each of the rats, and pressure ulcers were infected by inoculation of multidrug resistance (MDR) Pseudomonas aeruginosa. A portable dielectric barrier discharge device was used to generate cold air plasma. APCP, AgS and saline treatments were carried out once a day for 14days. The effectiveness of the treatment was evaluated on days 5, 10 and 15. Surface area, depth, pressure ulcer healing scale (PUSH) and microbiological examination were used for evaluation. The results of this study showed that APCP was superior over AgS application and irrigation with saline by means of the reduction in surface area and depth of ulcers. Furthermore, PUSH score in plasma group was lower than other groups and histopathological examination showed a higher epithelization in APCP group. The average reductions of MDR P. aeruginosa for APCP, AgS and control groups were determined as 5·64±1·87, 1·91±0·90 and 1·22±0·88 log10 CFU per gram tissue, respectively.   • Chronic kidney disease of unknown etiology (CKDu) is a major health issue in agricultural areas in Sri Lanka. Literature relevant to CKDu addresses several etiologies, including quality of drinking water in the affected areas including hardness, fluoride, ionicity, agrochemical and heavy metal contaminations, consumption of contaminated food, and the genetic makeup of vulnerable populations. Compressions were considered in case of >50% of increased or decreased blood flow. A total of 101 patients met NTOS criteria; mean age was 40 +/- 10.2; 79.2% women. Seventy patients had a unilateral NTOS and 31 a bilateral form. Duplex scanning showed that 56.4% of the patients had vessels compression, 55.7% in the unilateral group and 58.1% in the bilateral (p = 0.81). In unilateral NTOS, 21 (30%) patients had bilateral vascular compression, 17 (24.3%) had ipsilateral compression and 1 (1.4%) had contralateral compression. In bilateral NTOS, 15 (48.4%) had bilateral compression and 3 (9.7%) compression on only one side. We found a significant difference of the rate of vascular compressions between symptomatic and non-symptomatic upper-limbs, 54.5% vs. 32.9%, respectively, (p = 0.002) and a significant association between symptomatic upper-limbs and vascular compression (OR = 2.45 [95%IC 1.33-4.49]; p = 0.002). The sensitivity and the specificity of the duplex scanning were 54.5% and 67%, respectively. The ROC curve area was of 0.608 [95%IC 0.527-0.690]. This way it is possible to provide the safety system with an accurate measurement of both the angular speed and acceleration of the wheels. The proposed method has been compared to other conventional approaches. The results obtained in simulations and real tests show the superior performance of the proposed method, particularly for medium and low wheel angular speeds.The traditional cone penetration test system uses cable to transmit data; as the probe goes deeper into the ground, the length of the cable will become longer. This makes the installation of the test equipment more complicated, and excessively long cables cause signal distortion and seriously affect data accuracy. To evaluate the applicability and efficiency of our design, we have carried out exploration experiments with the sensor system proposed in this paper. The test results show that the experimental data collected by the new system are basically consistent with the data collected by traditional cable CPT equipment, and the accuracy of the collected data is higher. In this study, we systematically explored the circRNAs in the spleen of V. anguillarum-infected flounder at different infection time points. A total of 6581 circRNAs were identified, 148 of which showed differential expression patterns after V. anguillarum infection and were named DEcirs. Most of the DEcirs were strongly time-specific. The parental genes of the DEcirs were identified and functionally classified into diverse pathways, including immune-related pathways. Among the immune-related DEcirs, seven were predicted to sponge 18 targeted miRNAs that were differentially expressed during V. anguillarum infection (named DETmiRs).

Japanese flounder (Paralichthys olivaceus), an important economical marine fish cultured in north Asia, is affected by Vibrio anguillarum, a pathogenic bacterium that can infect a large number of fish. In this study, we systematically explored the circRNAs in the spleen of V. anguillarum-infected flounder at different infection time points. A total of 6581 circRNAs were identified, 148 of which showed differential expression patterns after V. anguillarum infection and were named DEcirs. Most of the DEcirs were strongly time-specific. The parental genes of the DEcirs were identified and functionally classified into diverse pathways, including immune-related pathways. Among the immune-related DEcirs, seven were predicted to sponge 18 targeted miRNAs that were differentially expressed during V. anguillarum infection (named DETmiRs).
