  • The potential of bio-energy recovery from real municipal wastewater was investigated using a one-stage pilot-scale submerged anaerobic membrane bioreactor (AnMBR) for a range of HRTs from 24 h to 6 h at ambient temperature around 25 °C. Infections must be managed to obtain better outcomes after HSCT. In this prospective observational study, viral monitoring was performed on 74 pediatric patients with MD and NMD who underwent HSCT. The incidence, risk factors, and impact of common opportunistic viral infections occurring within the first 100 days following HSCT were assessed. The viral pathogens included human herpesviruses, BK polyomavirus (BKV), adenovirus, parvovirus B19, and hepatitis B virus. In total, 52 (70%) patients had viral DNAemia, and 53% and 41% of patients developed human herpesvirus 6 (HHV-6) and cytomegalovirus (CMV) DNAemia, respectively. The risk factors were as follows negative CMV serology for any viral infections; age ≥ 2 years and negative CMV serology for HHV-6; age ≥5 years and female sex for BKV. The risk of viral infection did not significantly differ between MD and NMD, and no risk factor was identified for viral disease, likely because of the small sample numbers. However, despite the absence of symptoms, CMV DNAemia was found to increase the risk of mortality. The present review focus on recent developments of benzimidazole-hybrid molecules as anti MRSA agents and the results of in-vitro and in-vivo studies with possible mechanism of action and discussing structure-activity relationship (SAR) in different directions. The cytotoxicity of these compounds was evaluated by the MTT method against four cancer cell lines, including fibrosarcoma HT-1080, lung carcinoma A-549 and breast adenocarcinoma (MDA-MB-231 and MCF-7), and the results indicated that all compounds showed weak to moderate activities against all cancer cell lines with IC50 values ranging from 14.44 to 46.25 μM. On the basis of our research the structure-activity relationships (SAR) of these compounds were discussed. This work provides some important hints for further structural modification of totarol towards developing novel and highly effective anticancer drugs respectively. It is interesting to note that compound 3 g indicated a very significant cytotoxicity against HT-1080 and A-549 cell lines.

Furthermore, only a single study has investigated genetic relationships between populations in North and South America. We used double digest restriction site-associated DNA sequencing (ddRADseq) to resolve the population genomic structure of the boll weevil in the southern United States, northern Mexico, and Argentina. Additionally, we assembled the first complete mitochondrial genome for this species and generated a preliminary whole genome assembly, both of which were used to improve the identification of informative loci. Downstream analyses revealed two main lineages-one consisting of populations found geographically west of the Sierra Madre Occidental mountain range and the second consisting of populations found to the east-were revealed, and both were sub-structured. Population geographic structure was consistent with the isolation by distance model, indicating that geogrpahic distance is likely a primary mechanism driving divergence in this species. Boll weevil populations from Argentina were found to be more closely related to the eastern lineage, suggesting a recent colonization of South America by the eastern lineage, but additional sampling across Mexico, Central America and South America is needed to further clarify their origin. Finally, we uncovered an instance of population turnover or replacement, highlighting the temporal instability of population structure.Vector control is an effective strategy for reducing vector-borne disease transmission, but requires knowledge of vector habitat use and dispersal patterns.     During the COVID-19 pandemic, there has been an increase in the use of digital platforms for educational purposes, and increased use of smartphones and social media has affected the academic performance of students. In this study, we explored how emotional intelligence can, directly and indirectly, influence academic performance, with academic social networking sites (ASNS) as a mediator.

    A survey questionnaire comprising 42 items was used to collect data on emotional intelligence, ASNS, and academic performance. In total, 305 undergraduate university students participated in the study.   • PURPOSE In a single-institution phase II study, we evaluated the safety of a 5-day dose-equivalent neoadjuvant radiotherapy (RT) regimen for high-risk primary soft tissue sarcoma. PATIENTS AND METHODS Patients received neoadjuvant RT alone (30 Gy in five fractions) to the primary tumor with standard margins. The primary endpoint was grade ≥2 late-radiation toxicity. Major wound complications, local recurrences, and distant metastases were also examined. In exploratory analysis, we evaluated germline biomarkers for wound toxicity and the effects of the study on treatment utilization. RESULTS Over 2 years, 52 patients were enrolled with median follow-up of 29 months. Seven of 44 evaluable patients (16%) developed grade ≥2 late toxicity. Major wound complications occurred in 16 of 50 patients (32%); a signature defined by 19 germline SNPs in miRNA-binding sites of immune and DNA damage response genes, in addition to lower extremity tumor location, demonstrated strong predictive performance for major wound complications. Compared with the preceding 2-year period, the number of patients treated with neoadjuvant RT alone at our institution increased 3-fold, with a concomitant increase in the catchment area. CONCLUSIONS A shorter 5-day neoadjuvant RT regimen results in favorable rates of wound complications and grade ≥2 toxicity after 2-year follow-up. Five-day RT significantly increased utilization of neoadjuvant RT at our high-volume sarcoma center. EXPERIMENTAL DESIGN We studied the consequences of combining two therapeutic agents venetoclax and 5-Aza, in AML preclinical models and primary patient samples. We measured expression changes in the integrated stress response (ISR) and the BCL-2 family by western blot and qPCR. Subsequently we engineered PMAIP1 (NOXA)- and **** (PUMA)-deficient AML cell lines using CRISPR-Cas9 methods to understand their respective role in driving the venetoclax/5-Aza combinatorial activity. RESULTS In this study, we demonstrate that venetoclax and 5-Aza act synergistically to kill AML cells in vitro and display combinatorial anti-tumor activity in vivo. We uncover a novel non-epigenetic mechanism for 5-Aza-induced apoptosis in AML cells through transcriptional induction of the pro-apoptotic BH3-only protein NOXA. This induction occurred within hours of treatment and was mediated by the ISR pathway. NOXA was detected in complex with anti-apoptotic proteins, suggesting that 5-Aza may be "priming" the AML cells for venetoclax-induced apoptosis. PMAIP1 knockout confirmed its major role in driving venetoclax and 5-Aza synergy. CONCLUSIONS These data provide a novel non-epigenetic mechanism of action for 5-Aza and its combinatorial activity with venetoclax through the ISR-mediated induction of PMAIP1. The survey included questions about cigarette consumption and use of e-cigarettes and biomarkers, such as salivary cotinine markers and exhaled carbon monoxide. After 18 months, we repeated data collection, and asked about changes in cigarette smoking status and cigarettes per day (CPD). Comparisons between groups were performed using the χ2 test, Fisher's exact test or Wilcoxon rank-sum test. RESULTS Of 375 baseline participants, 214 (57.07%) returned for follow-up and were included in analyses. Of these, 20 (9.3%) reported having stopped cigarette smoking and had biochemical verification of cigarette smoking abstinence. Among those who quit smoking, 15% were baseline e-cigarette users; while among those who continued to smoke at follow-up, about 11% were baseline e-cigarette users. This difference was not statistically significant (p=0.48). Among all those who continued to smoke at follow-up, there was no overall decrease in CPD, nor a significant difference in change in CPD between baseline e-cigarette users and non-users (p=0.98). Only two patients, of whom one sensitized to IBOA, had a benefit from using barrier films. CONCLUSIONS CAE occurred in 5.5% of FreeStyle Libre users, and 3.8% suffered from ACD due to IBOA. Our simulation replicated the findings that YAP overexpression markedly attenuated cell proliferation owing to elevated negative feedback strength. After disruption of YAP-LATS negative feedback loop, however, YAP overexpression would promote cell proliferation. Consistently, LATS overexpression inhibited cell growth and lowered the proliferation potential. We also employed a putative LATS agonist and identified its dose-dependent tumor suppressive effects. Furthermore, targeted delivery could more effectively inhibit tumor growth. Our model has reconciled experimental findings and implied that reconstruction of functional and/or hyperactivated YAP-LATS negative feedback might be a promising strategy to homeostatic maintenance and tumor suppression.The mechanism of biological information flow is of vital importance. Diagnostic test characteristics and area under receiver operating characteristic (AUROC) curves were calculated.

    A total of 152 infants were enrolled with mean (SD) gestational age of 25.8 (1.5) weeks gestation. Of them, 87 (57%) infants were diagnosed with BPD. The LUS were significantly higher in infants diagnosed with BPD compared with those without BPD at all scan time points (P<.01). The score of >10 at all 3 time points had higher sensitivity (0.89, 0.89, and 0.77), specificity (0.87, 0.90, and 0.92), and corresponding clinically important positive and negative likelihood ratios. The AUROC for LUS at the 3 time points were 0.96, 0.97, and 0.95 on day 3, 7, and 14, respectively. Compared with the model using clinical characteristics, LUS alone had higher AUROC (P<.05 for all 3 time points).

    To evaluate the association of therapeutic hypothermia with magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) findings and 30-month neurodevelopment in term neonatal encephalopathy.

    Cross-sectional analysis of 30-month neurodevelopment (IQR 19.0-31.4) in a prospective cohort of mild-to-severe neonatal encephalopathy imaged on day 4 (1993-2017 with institutional implementation of therapeutic hypothermia in 2007). MRI injury was classified as normal, watershed, or basal ganglia/thalamus. Abnormal motor outcome was defined as Bayley-II psychomotor developmental index <70, Bayley-III motor score <85 or functional motor deficit. Abnormal cognitive outcome was defined as Bayley-II mental developmental index <70 or Bayley-III cognitive score <85. Abnormal composite outcome was defined as abnormal motor and/or cognitive outcome, or death. The association of therapeutic hypothermia with MRI and outcomes was evaluated with multivariable logistic regression adjusted for propensity to receive therapeutic hypothermia.

Traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) assumes that diseases originate from the attenuation of one's body constitution. A few studies have found that hypertension is correlated with TCM body constitution. However, body constitution is also affected by living environment. Therefore, investigating the correlation between deviations in body constitution and essential hypertension in different living environments is necessary to provide the basis for using TCM in combination with conventional Western medicine to prevent and treat hypertension.

    A case-control study was designed. Participants were selected from the outpatient clinics and neighboring communities of a regional teaching hospital in southern Taiwan.     The aim of this study was to investigate the influence of psychological resilience and metacognitions of cancer survivors and their family caregivers (FCs) on fear of recurrence (FoR).

    The cancer survivors and caregivers reported low levels of psychological resilience, which we found to be correlated with great fear of recurrence in cancer survivors and FCs. It was also in relation with metacognitions in cancer survivors and FCs.The findings showed that psychological resilience negatively predicted the fear of recurrence, whereas the metacognitions positively predicted the fear of recurrence in cancer survivors and FCs. The total effects of psychological resilience on the FoR in cancer survivors and FCs were 0.920 (confidence interval [CI], -2.059 to 0.072) and 0.061 (CI, -0.475 to 0.474), respectively. The total effects of metacognition on the FoR in cancer survivors and FCs were 1.164 (CI, 0.217-2.371) and 0.486 (CI, 0.016-1.058), respectively.

Results showed that only small differences were observed for starch molecular size distributions and chain-length distributions in the raw sorghum flour. Of significance, the leached starch content and molecular size during steaming was very different among these sorghum varieties. Furthermore, Spearman correlation analysis showed that there was no significant correlation between starch fine structural parameters with the leached starch content. On the other hand, the correlation analysis showed that leached starch molecular size was negatively correlated with starch crystallinity, while positively correlated with the onset and peak gelatinization temperatures. It is concluded that the sorghum steaming property is controlled by the starch crystalline structures instead of starch fine molecular structures. The tensile strength and the elongation at break could reach up to 7.55 MPa and 487%, respectively. In addition, due to the reversibility of the covalent bond between chitosan framework and rubber matrix, the crosslinking network destroyed by external force could be reestablished under high temperature stimulation. The mechanical properties of the sample could be restored to more than 90% of the original sample, whether it was complete fracture, cyclic damage or recyclable. After casting solution and drying processes, the samples were evaluated regarding the visual macroscopic and microscopic aspects showing continuous and homogeneous structure. The results were related to the physicochemical and mechanical properties. The GS addition promoted a decrease in the tensile strength (3.3 ± 0.1 MPa to 1.2 ± 0.3 MPa) and elastic modulus (52 ± 13 MPa to 10 ± 3 MPa) values, while the elongation percentage (160 ± 30% to 212 ± 14%) values seem to have not been so affected.   • Minimal-flow anesthesia provides various advantages, such as reduced environmental pollution, proper humidification and warming of anesthetic gases, and reduced costs.     Early mobilization after surgery is a cornerstone of the Enhanced Recovery After Surgery (ERAS) programs in total hip arthroplasty (THA) or total knee arthroplasty (TKA). Our goal was to determine the time to mobilization after this surgery and the factors associated with early mobilization.

    This was a predefined substudy of the POWER.2 study, a prospective cohort study conducted in patients undergoing THA and TKA at 131 Spanish hospitals. The primary outcome was the time until mobilization after surgery as well as determining those perioperative factors associated with early mobilization after surgery.

Primary (pain interference) and secondary outcome measures were collected at recruitment and again at 6months. Per-protocol analyses were utilized due to high participant attrition (46% across groups).
