We sought to investigate the temporal changes of eyelid height after phenylephrine instillation in Korean patients with and without ptosis to determine the time points of the first and maximum reactions.
The phenylephrine test was performed on 16 eyes of 12 ptotic patients (group I) and 24 eyes of 12 normal control subjects (group II) in our hospital between September 2017 and March 2018. One drop of 2.5% phenylephrine was instilled and the marginal reflex distance 1 (MRD1) was measured at 15 seconds before instillation and the following time points after instillation at 15-second intervals for the initial 5 minutes and at 5-minute intervals until a total of 20 minutes was reached (i.e., at 10, 15, and 20 minutes).
In group I patients, the first reaction appeared at 5 minutes (
= 0.034), while the maximum eyelid height after the first reaction was reached at 15 minutes (

To investigate the efficacy of the combined phototherapeutic keratectomy (PTK) and peripheral anterior stromal puncture (ASP) compared with that of PTK alone in patients with recurrent corneal erosion syndrome (RCES).
The medical records of 25 patients (25 eyes) who underwent combined treatment of PTK and peripheral ASP for RCES from March 2016 to May 2017 were retrospectively reviewed. Twenty-three patients (23 eyes) treated with PTK alone from March 2015 to February 2016 served as a control group. All surgeries were performed by a single surgeon. This retrospective clinical study comprised 48 patients (48 eyes) who were followed up for more than 18 months. Clinical records of age, sex, laterality, etiology of RCES, and history of recurrence after treatment were evaluated.
Twenty-five eyes were treated with combined PTK and ASP, and 23 eyes were treated with PTK only. The mean follow-up period was 19.63 ± 2.97 and 19.75 ± 6.83 months, respectively. There were no differences in baseline parameters between the groups. In the combined treatment group, one patient experienced recurrence 6 months after the surgery. In the single treatment group, five patients showed recurrence at 4, 7, 8, 11, and 13 months after the surgery, respectively. Compared to the single treatment group, the combined treatment group showed significantly lower recurrence rate (
< 0.05). All recurred patients required no additional treatment except temporary therapeutic contact lenses and topical lubricants.
Our findings suggest that combined treatment of PTK and peripheral ASP is effective in alleviation of symptoms and prevention of recurrence in refractory RCES compared with treatment using PTK alone.

We investigate the effect of state insurance mandates on the supply of child psychiatrists, pediatricians, and board-certified behavioral analysts (BCBAs).
We used data from the National Conference of State Legislatures and Health Resources and Services Administration's Area Health Resource Files to examine child psychiatrists, pediatricians, and BCBAs in all 50 states from 2003 to 2017. Fixed-effects regression models compared change in workforce density before versus one year after mandate implementation and the effect of mandate generosity across 44 US states implementing mandates between 2003 and 2017.
From 2003 to 2017, child psychiatrists increased from 7.40 to 10.03 per 100 000 children, pediatricians from 62.35 to 68.86, and BCBAs from 1.34 to 29.88. Mandate introductiatricians. Opioid and non-opioid analgesics were the most prevalent classes of CNS medicines in this study. Polypharmacy is strongly associated with the aforementioned classes of analgesics. Polypharmacy is also associated with TCAs and SSRIs, although to a lesser extent than for analgesics. For all CNS medicine classes, polypharmacy may need to be considered in relation to reducing the risk of potential adverse events. After adjustment, lower wealth is associated particularly with analgesics, highlighting that socioeconomic factors may play a role in the prescribing of CNS medicines. These findings provide a baseline for future research into this area.
Psoriasis (PS) is a chronic inflammatory skin disease accompanied by reduced quality of life. Mindfulness is the ability to focus on the present moment without evaluation. Findings on the effects of 8-week mindfulness trainings in patients with PS reveal positive effects on the severity of the disease and quality of life. However, it remained unclear what distinguishes patients with PS interested in psychological interventions from those without interest and whether also a shorter, namely 2-week mindfulness-based intervention is beneficial in this patient group. This will be investigated with this study.
Data will be collected at a rehabilitation clinic in Germany. The study is divided into two parts study 1a is an observational study. Its aim is to investigate whether sociodemographic, skin-related and psychological factors are significant predictors of interest in a brief psychological intervention in 127 patients with PS. Study 1b is a randomised controlled trial, in which 60 patients (retrieved from study 1a) will be randomised to an intervention or control group (treatment as usual). The main outcome variables are mindfulness and self-compassion. In addition, mediation analyses will be used in an explorative manner to test whether there is a relationship between mindfulness/self-compassion and the severity of PS and whether it is mediated by itch catastrophising and fear of negative evaluation (first model) or perceived stress (second model).
The study protocol has been approved by the University of Giessen. Study results will be disseminated by publication of the results at (inter) national conferences and in scientific journals.

To investigate the association of volume of total hip arthroplasty (THA) between consultants and within the same consultant in the previous year and the hazard of revision using multilevel survival models.
Prospective cohort study using data from a national joint replacement register.
Elective THA across all private and public centres in England and Wales between April 2003 and February 2017.
Patients aged 50 years or more undergoing THA for osteoarthritis.

Of the 579 858 patients undergoing primary THA (mean baseline age 69.8 years (SD 10.2)), 61.1% were women. Multilevel survival found differing results for between and within-consultant effects. There was a strong volume-revision association between consultants, with a near-linear 43.3% (95% CI 29.1% to 57.4%) reduction of the risk of revision comparing consultants with volumes between 1 and 200 p of revision after THA. The lack of association within-consultants suggests that individual changes to consultant volume alone will have little effect on outcomes following THA.These novel findings provide strong evidence supporting the practice of specialisation of hip arthroplasty. It does not support the practice of low-volume consultants increasing their personal volume as it is unlikely their results would improve if this is the only change. Limiting the exposure of patients to consultants with low volumes of THA and greater utilisation of centres with higher volume surgeons with better outcomes may be beneficial to patients.

Mindfulness is the ability to focus on the present moment without evaluation. Findings on the effects of 8-week mindfulness trainings in patients with PS reveal positive effects on the severity of the disease and quality of life. However, it remained unclear what distinguishes patients with PS interested in psychological interventions from those without interest and whether also a shorter, namely 2-week mindfulness-based intervention is beneficial in this patient group. This will be investigated with this study. Data will be collected at a rehabilitation clinic in Germany. The study is divided into two parts study 1a is an observational study. Its aim is to investigate whether sociodemographic, skin-related and psychological factors are significant predictors of interest in a brief psychological intervention in 127 patients with PS. To investigate the association of volume of total hip arthroplasty (THA) between consultants and within the same consultant in the previous year and the hazard of revision using multilevel survival models. Prospective cohort study using data from a national joint replacement register. Elective THA across all private and public centres in England and Wales between April 2003 and February 2017. Patients aged 50 years or more undergoing THA for osteoarthritis. The volume of THA conducted in the preceding 365 days to the index procedure. Revision surgery (excision, addition or replacement) of a primary THA. Of the 579 858 patients undergoing primary THA (mean baseline age 69.8 years (SD 10.2)), 61.1% were women. Multilevel survival found differing results for between and within-consultant effects. There was a strong volume-revision association between consultants, with a near-linear 43.3% (95% CI 29.1% to 57.4%) reduction of the risk of revision comparing consultants with volumes between 1 and 200 p of revision after THA. The composition of human breast milk changes in the first two months of life, adapting itself to the evolving needs of the growing new-born. Lipids in milk are a source of energy, essential fatty acids (FA), fat-soluble vitamins, and vital bioactive components. Information on breast milk FA of Malaysian lactating women is scarce. Based on convenience sampling, a total of 20 Malay breastfeeding women who fulfilled the inclusion criteria were recruited. Breast milk was collected three times from each subject at consecutive intervals of 2-3 weeks apart. A total of 60 breast milk samples were collected and classified into "transitional milk" (n = 8), "early milk" (n = 26) and "mature milk" (n = 26). All milk samples were air freighted to University of Groningen, Netherlands for analysis. The dominant breast milk FA were oleic acid, constituting 33% of total fatty acids, followed by palmitic acid (26%). Both these FA and the essential FA, linoleic acid (10%) and alpha-linolenic acid (0.4%), showed no significant changes from transitional to mature milk. Breast milk ratio of n-6n-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA) was comparatively high, exceeding 10 throughout the lactation period, suggesting a healthier balance of PUFA intake is needed in pregnancy and at postpartum.Infections due to Gram-negative bacteria Helicobacter pylori may result in humans having gastritis, gastric or duodenal ulcer, and even gastric cancer. The aim of this study was to determine, using an experimental model of H. pylori infection in guinea pigs, the specific characteristics of infrared spectra (IR) of sera from H. pylori infected (40) vs. uninfected (20) guinea pigs. The H. pylori status was confirmed by histological, molecular, and serological examination. The IR spectra were measured using a Fourier-transform (FT)-IR spectrometer Spectrum 400 (PerkinElmer) within the range of wavenumbers 3000-750 cm-1 and converted to first derivative spectra. Ten wavenumbers correlated with H. pylori infection, based on the chi-square test, were selected for a K-nearest neighbors (k-NN) algorithm. The wavenumbers correlating with infection were identified in the W2 and W3 windows associated mainly with proteins and in the W4 window related to nucleic acids and hydrocarbons. The k-NN for detection of H. pylori infection has been developed based on chemometric data. Using this model, animals were classified as infected with H. pylori with 100% specificity and 97% sensitivity. The evaluation of the clinical and pathological behavior of dermatopathies implies the use of control strategies and the recognition of pathological patterns that may be particular to the species.Headache disorders are prevalent and disabling conditions impacting on people of all ages, including children and adolescents with substantial impact on their school activities and leisure time. However, in recent years, this scenario has changed substantially with several trials being conducted to examine the effects of immunotherapy and novel targeting agents. Several immune checkpoint inhibitors have shown promising results in early-stage clinical trials. Moreover, phase III trials with large cohorts have demonstrated remarkable improvement in survival with the use of new targeted therapies in second-line treatment. Treatment regimens involving the combination of two immune checkpoint inhibitors as well as immune checkpoint inhibitors and anti-angiogenic targeted therapies have shown potential to act synergistically in clinical trials. Recently, the combination of atezolizumab and bevacizumab evaluated in a phase III clinical trial has demonstrated survival superiority in the first-line treatment; it is the new considered standard of care.

Accumulating evidence shows that the tumor microenvironment contributes to this phenomenon and that long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs) are also involved in this process. In this study, we identified a new lncRNA small nucleolar RNA host gene 12 (SNHG12) and investigated its role in tumor immune escape. We analyzed the expression levels of interlukin (IL)-6R and programmed death-ligand 1 (PD-L1) in 51 ovarian cancer and 20 normal specimens by immunohistochemistry. The correlation between SNHG12 and IL-6R in clinical ovarian cancer samples was identified by RT-qPCR. We then performed SNHG12 gain- and loss-function experiments in order to investigate its role in the regulation of immune escape and the crosstalk between miR-21 and IL-6. T cell proliferation was assessed by flow cytometry. In vivo pro-immune escape activity of SNHG12 was assessed by tumor-xenograft mouse model. IL-6R and PD-L1 were found to be overexpressed in clinical ovarian cancer specimens. Meanwhile, SNHG12 and IL-6R expressions were positively correlated in clinical ovarian cancer samples. SNHG12 facilitated ovarian immune escape by promoting IL-6/miR-21 crosstalk between ovarian cancer cells and M2 macrophages. Notably, SNHG12 promoted IL-6R transcription by recruiting NF-κB1 to the IL-6R promoter. Our study reveals that SNHG12 facilitates ovarian cancer immune escape by upregulating IL-6R.Adipocyte differentiation involves a series of highly synergistic processes, including clone amplification, proliferation arrest, and terminal differentiation. However, the mechanisms that control these different steps remain unclear. Emerging studies support that miRNAs play an important role in regulating adipogenesis. In this study, we found that the expression of miR-345-5p decreased during adipogenic differentiation, and overexpression of miR-345-5p reduced lipid accumulation in adipocytes and the expression of adipocyte related genes essential to lipogenic transcription, fatty acid synthesis and fatty acid transport. In addition, miR-345-5p directly targeted the 3'UTR of vascular endothelial growth factor B, and miR-345-5p mimic inhibited the expression of vascular endothelial growth factor B at both mRNA and protein levels. In conclusion, our results demonstrate that miR-345-5p inhibits adipocyte differentiation via targeting vascular endothelial growth factor B.
As the development of mobile health apps continues to accelerate, the need to implement a framework that can standardize the categorization of these apps to allow for efficient yet robust regulation is growing. However, regulators and researchers are faced with numerous challenges, as apps have a wide variety of features, constant updates, and fluid use cases for consumers. As past regulatory efforts have failed to match the rapid innovation of these apps, the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has proposed that the Software Precertification (Pre-Cert) Program and a new risk-based framework could be the solution.

In this quality improvement study during summer 2019, the top 10 apps for 6 disease conditions (addiction, anxiety, depression, diabetes, high blood pressure, and schizophrenia) in Apple iTunes and Android Google Play Sg regulatory review from those that would not. Apps exempt from the review also carried concerns regarding privacy and data security. Before the framework is used to assess the need for a formal review of digital health tools, further research and regulatory guidance are needed to ensure that the Pre-Cert Program operates in the greatest interest of public health.In **** of the literature on function approximation by deep networks, the function is assumed to be defined on some known domain, such as a cube or a sphere. In practice, the data might not be dense on these domains, and therefore, the approximation theory results are observed to be too conservative. In manifold learning, one assumes instead that the data is sampled from an unknown manifold; i.e., the manifold is defined by the data itself. Function approximation on this unknown manifold is then a two stage procedure first, one approximates the Laplace-Beltrami operator (and its eigen-decomposition) on this manifold using a graph Laplacian, and next, approximates the target function using the eigen-functions. Alternatively, one estimates first some atlas on the manifold and then uses local approximation techniques based on the local coordinate charts. In this paper, we propose a more direct approach to function approximation on unknown, data defined manifolds without computing the eigen-decomposition of some operator or an atlas for the manifold, and without any kind of training in the classical sense. Our constructions are universal; i.e., do not require the knowledge of any prior on the target function other than continuity on the manifold. To tackle the aforementioned drawbacks, we propose an enhanced multi-view spectral clustering model. Our model characterizes the consistency among indicator matrices by minimizing our proposed weighted tensor nuclear norm, which explicitly exploits the salient different information between singular values of the matrix. Moreover, our model adaptively assigns a reasonable weight to each view, which helps improve robustness of the algorithm. Finally, the proposed tensor nuclear norm well exploits both high-order and complementary information, which helps mine the consistency between indicator matrices.

In this study, we found that the expression of miR-345-5p decreased during adipogenic differentiation, and overexpression of miR-345-5p reduced lipid accumulation in adipocytes and the expression of adipocyte related genes essential to lipogenic transcription, fatty acid synthesis and fatty acid transport. In addition, miR-345-5p directly targeted the 3'UTR of vascular endothelial growth factor B, and miR-345-5p mimic inhibited the expression of vascular endothelial growth factor B at both mRNA and protein levels. As the development of mobile health apps continues to accelerate, the need to implement a framework that can standardize the categorization of these apps to allow for efficient yet robust regulation is growing. All participants underwent standard echocardiography examination and measurement of serum Ec-*** activity. Overall, we found a significantly decreased trend of serum Ec-*** activity from subjects with normal geometry (147.96±15.94 U/mL), subjects with abnormal LV geometry without HF (140.19±20.12 U/mL), and subjects with abnormal LV geometry and overt HF (129.32±17.92 U/mL) after adjustment for potential confounders (P for trend less then 0.001). The downward trends remained significant in the concentric hypertrophy and eccentric hypertrophy groups after stratification by different LV geometry patterns. These aortas underwent delamination testing in simulation of aortic dissection. Biaxial tensile testing was performed to determine modulus of elasticity (aortic stiffness), and energy loss (a measure of efficiency in performing the Windkessel function). Delamination strength (Sd) was lowest in dissected aortas (18±6 mN/mm) and highest in normal aortas (58±16 mN/mm), and aneurysms fell in between, with greater Sd in the BAV group (37±10 mN/mm) than the TAV group (27±10 mN/mm) (P less then 0.001). Bicuspid aortopathy was associated with greater stiffness (P less then 0.001), while aneurysms with TAV demonstrated greater energy loss (P less then 0.001). Sd decreased by 7.8±1.2 mmol/L per mm per decade of life (r2=0.45, P less then 0.001), and it was significantly lower for patients with hypertension (P=0.001). Sd decreased by 6.1±2.1 mmol/L per mm with each centimeter increase in aortic diameter (r2=0.15, P=0.007). The aim of this study was to compare the efficacy and reliability of holmium (HoYAG) laser lithotripsy (HLL) and pneumatic lithotripsy (PL) in percutaneous nephrolithotomy (PCNL) in the treatment of patients with Grade IV kidney stones based on Guy's Stone Score.
This retrospective study included 103 patients with Grade IV kidney stones out of 440 patients who underwent PCNL through HLL and PL in Second Affiliated Hospital of Shantou University Medical College, China, from January 2016 to December 2018. We analyzed preoperative, intraoperative, and postoperative variables of the patients to evaluate the efficacy and reliability of PCNL procedures.
Patients were categorized as Grade I, II, III, and IV, and the patients of each grade were 85 (19.32%), 39 (8.86%), 213 (48.41%), and 103 (23.41%), respectively. In Grade IV, the total operative time (min) for the PL and HLL groups was 137.7 ± 47.79 and 134.27 ± 53.38, respectively (p = 0.744). The variation in laboratory examination values including ΔHGB (g/Lwer postoperative hospitalization days. Based on the results of our retrospective study, for those Grade IV kidney stone patients who have a risk of bleeding before PCNL operation, HLL can be a considerable treatment option. Besides, in consideration of reducing human care cost, HLL which showed fewer hospitalization days, would be more welcome by patients.
The Royal College of Pathologists of Australasia Quality Assurance Programs (RCPAQAP) offers a comprehensive range of External Quality Assurance programs for all disciplines of pathology and is committed to delivering programs to advance outcomes in patient care and promote excellence in laboratory diagnostic and technical proficiency. Proficiency testing in cytopreparatory techniques became available for formal enrolment in 2018. The 2019 technical program focused on the demonstration of a laboratory to troubleshoot problems encountered during staining and processing. The exercise provided a peer comparison of a laboratory's ability to (1) identify the problem viewed from a digital image and (2) describe the troubleshooting steps to rectify the problem using assessment guidelines.
Ten troubleshooting exercises including whole-slide z-stacked virtual images, a reference slide, and an online Result Entry questionnaire were provided. Common staining and processing problems were demonstrated in these exercistroubleshooting steps. The exercise also identified a method for troubleshooting formalin vapour-affected slides using citrate buffer which may be useful for laboratories following in-house validation.
Quality cytopathology preparatory techniques are integral to mitigating the risk of diagnostic error. The digital pathology platform allowed homogeneity of samples for all participants and appeared to be a satisfactory mode for demonstrating the technical problems to participants. Laboratories participating in this survey showed good performance in identifying processing and staining problems on virtual images and working through the troubleshooting steps. In healthy IVDs, synthesis and degradation of ECM are kept in balance by matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) and tissue inhibitors of MMPs. MMPs are enzymes responsible for ECM degradation, and their expression levels are known to increase in degenerated disks. However, the exact pathophysiological concentration of MMP-1 in the degenerated disks of patients with chronic LBP has not been reported previously. Factors secreted by human mesenchymal stem cells (hMSCs) have shown positive results in cell therapy of degenerated disks. The aim of this study was to investigate the pathophysiological MMP-1 concentration (in ng/mL) in degenerated disk tissue and to evaluate if conditioned media (CM) from hMSCs could mitigate the effects of MMP-1 at the detected levels in a 3D in vitro disk cell (DC) pellet model. Tissue levels of MMP-1 were quantified in disk tissue collected from 6 chronic LBP patients undergoing surgery. DC pellet cultures were performed to investigate the effects of MMP-1 alone and the effects of conditioned media (CM) in the presence of MMP-1. MMP-1 was introduced in the pellets on day 14 at concentrations of 5, 50, or 100 ng/mL. The pellets were harvested on day 28 and evaluated for cell viability, proliferation, and ECM production. The mean concentration of MMP-1 in disk tissue was 151 ng/mL. Results from pellet cultures demonstrated a higher number of viable cells, glycosaminoglycan production, and ECM accumulation in the CM group even in the presence of MMP-1 compared to the controls. Magnetic resonance-guided laser interstitial thermal therapy (MRgLITT) is a new technology that provides a clinically efficacious and minimally invasive alternative to conventional microsurgical resection. However, little data exist on how costs compare to traditional open surgery. The goal of this paper is to investigate the cost-effectiveness of MRgLITT in the treatment of pediatric epilepsy.
We retrospectively analyzed the medical records of pediatric patients who underwent MRgLITT via the Visualase® thermal therapy system (Medtronic, Inc., Minneapolis, MN, USA) between December 2013 and September 2017. Direct costs associated with preoperative, operative, and follow-up care were extracted. Benefit was calculated in quality-adjusted life years (QALYs), and the cost-effectiveness was derived from the discounted total direct costs over QALY. Sensitivity analysis on 4 variables was utilized to assess the validity of our results.

Ten troubleshooting exercises including whole-slide z-stacked virtual images, a reference slide, and an online Result Entry questionnaire were provided. Common staining and processing problems were demonstrated in these exercistroubleshooting steps. The exercise also identified a method for troubleshooting formalin vapour-affected slides using citrate buffer which may be useful for laboratories following in-house validation. Quality cytopathology preparatory techniques are integral to mitigating the risk of diagnostic error. The digital pathology platform allowed homogeneity of samples for all participants and appeared to be a satisfactory mode for demonstrating the technical problems to participants. MMPs are enzymes responsible for ECM degradation, and their expression levels are known to increase in degenerated disks. However, the exact pathophysiological concentration of MMP-1 in the degenerated disks of patients with chronic LBP has not been reported previously. Factors secreted by human mesenchymal stem cells (hMSCs) have shown positive results in cell therapy of degenerated disks. The aim of this study was to investigate the pathophysiological MMP-1 concentration (in ng/mL) in degenerated disk tissue and to evaluate if conditioned media (CM) from hMSCs could mitigate the effects of MMP-1 at the detected levels in a 3D in vitro disk cell (DC) pellet model. Tissue levels of MMP-1 were quantified in disk tissue collected from 6 chronic LBP patients undergoing surgery. DC pellet cultures were performed to investigate the effects of MMP-1 alone and the effects of conditioned media (CM) in the presence of MMP-1. Indeed, in a previous study, we found that genes putatively coding for the CAZyme families of carbohydrate esterase (CE)1 and CE10, while not specifically enriched in number, were suggested to have lifestyle-specific gene expression patterns. Here, we used comparative genomics and a clustering approach to understand how the repertoire of the CE1- and CE10-encoding gene families is shaped across oomycete evolution. These data are combined with comparative transcriptomic analyses across homologous clusters within the gene families. We find that CE1 and CE10 have been reduced in number in biotrophic oomycetes independent of the phylogenetic relationship of the biotrophs to each other. The reduction in CE1 is different from that observed for CE10 While in CE10 specific clusters of homologous sequences show convergent reduction, CE1 reduction is caused by species-specific losses. C1EIP regulates PGCs formation by mediating the expression of PGC-associated genes, such as CVH (Chicken Vasa Homologous) and CKIT (Chicken KIT proto-oncogene). C1EIP knockdown during embryonic development reduces PGC generation efficiency both in vitro and in ovo. Conversely, C1EIP overexpression increases the formation efficiency of PGCs. C1EIP encodes a cytoplasmic protein that interacts with ENO1 (Enolase 1) in the cytoplasm, inhibits the Notch signaling pathway, and positively regulates PGC generation. Collectively, our findings demonstrate C1EIP as a novel gene involved in PGC formation, which regulates genes involved in embryonic stem cell differentiation through interaction with ENO1 and subsequent inhibition of the Notch signaling pathway by the impression of Myc (****proto-oncogene).

The objective of this review is to identify and synthesize the best available qualitative evidence to understand healthcare providers' views on disrespect and abuse of women during facility-based childbirth in Africa.
Everyday, approximately 800 women die from preventable pregnancy- and childbirth-related causes worldwide; poorer women living in developing countries comprise 99% of these deaths. Maternal mortality has no single cause or solution, but the most effective preventive strategy is ensuring that every woman gives birth in an equipped health facility with the help of skilled providers. Yet, many women decline to attend facility-based delivery, often due to disrespect and abuse received during childbirth.
This systematic review will consider studies that include views of care providers regarding disrespect and abuse of women in birthing facilities, including verbal, physical and sexual abuse; stigma; discrimination; substandard care; neglect; and trust and communication problems. Qualitative studies that relate to Africa published in English from 1990 will be included.
PubMed, CINAHL, Embase, Scopus, African Index Medicus and Web of Science, and selected gray literature sources, will be searched for eligible papers. Titles and abstracts of obtained documents will be assessed by the lead reviewer against the inclusion criteria. Identified documents will then be appraised for relevance and rigor by two independent reviewers. Data will be extracted by two independent reviewers and graded according to the ConQual approach.

Simulation-based learning experiences (SBLE) are being utilized more frequently to support learning with increasing numbers of nurses. Despite SBLE becoming more popular, resources and manikin availability are not meeting the demand placed on simulation programs in nursing schools and health care facilities. Programs are placing more learners in observational roles without knowing what learning can be expected.
Studies will be considered if they investigated learning outcomes of any nursing population (e.g. pre-licensure nursing student, graduate nursing student, practicing nurse) placed in an observational role in simulation. Any simulation topic related to Results will be presented in a manner that aligns with the objective of the review.

Residential aged care facilities provide opportunities for nursing students to develop skills and interest in caring for older adults. Studies that address students' clinical placements in these settings highlight the benefits of and concerns with their experiences. Insight into the state of knowledge regarding teaching strategies used in residential aged care facilities could benefit nursing education programs and help to ensure student learning is maximized.

The concepts of interest include planned and intentional activities and strategies used to facilitate student learning and student clinical experiences. A clinical experience is defined as when a student enters a residential aged care facility and is assigned an individual or individuals to care for.
This scoping review will aim to locate published and unpublished literature employing a three-step search strategy. Only papers published in English from 1992 onward will be included. Data extracted from eligible papers will include details on the participants, context, strategy, activity and outcomes. The intended purpose of regulation and accreditation is to protect the public and ensure the quality of education programs; however, there is a gap in published evidence on the outcomes of such regulation and accreditation.
Published and unpublished studies worldwide of any pre-licensure RN students or any pre-licensure graduates of RN programs will be considered. Concepts of interest for the proposed review are reported outcomes related to regulatory activities or accreditation requirements affecting any pre-licensure education programs preparing students to become RNs.
