It is standard practice to model site-to-site variability of substitution rates by discretizing a continuous distribution into a small number, K, of equiprobable rate categories. We demonstrate that the variance of this discretized distribution has an upper bound determined solely by the choice of K and the mean of the distribution. This bound can introduce biases into statistical inference, especially when estimating parameters governing site-to-site variability of substitution rates. Applications to two large collections of sequence alignments demonstrate that this upper bound is often reached in analyses of real data. So far, three dominant dwarfing genes (Ddw1, Ddw3, and Ddw4) and three recessive genes (ct1, ct2, and np) have been characterized and precisely mapped in rye. There is no complete catalog of dwarfing genes available in rye. This paper presents an identification of the source of dwarfism and preliminary characterization of the new recessive gene dw9 from the BK-1 line. The gene was mapped on the long arm of the 6R chromosome and belongs to the GA-insensitive group. The initial characterization of the influence of this gene on morphological traits shows that it significantly affects the decrease of yielding trait parameters. We used tagging data from studies of the asp Leuciscus aspius and the bleak Alburnus alburnus collected from 2014 to 2018 and located ghost tag positions on the monitored spawning site using portable backpack reader for their detection. We modelled virtual river-wide flat-bed antennas (widths 0.2, 0.4, 0.6 and 0.8 m) representing monitoring effort and estimated the probability of the presence of ghost tags within the antenna field. In addition to THSD4 and HIVEP2, age-by-genotype interactions also prioritized genes previously identified as asthma candidate genes, including DPP10, HDAC9, TBXAS1, FBXL7, and GSDMB/ORMDL3, as pharmacogenomic loci as well. This study is the first to link these genes to a pharmacogenetic trait for asthma.BACKGROUND Systematic collection of mortality/morbidity data over time is crucial for monitoring trends in population health, developing health policies, assessing the impact of health programs. In Poland, a comprehensive analysis describing trends in disease burden for major conditions has never been published. The Global Burden of Diseases, Injuries, and Risk Factors Study (GBD) provides data on the burden of over 300 diseases in 195 countries since 1990. We used the GBD database to undertake an assessment of disease burden in Poland, evaluate changes in population health between 1990-2017, and compare Poland with other Central European (CE) countries. METHODS The results of GBD 2017 for 1990 and 2017 for Poland and CE were used to assess rates and trends in years of life lost (YLLs), years lived with disability (YLDs), disability-adjusted life years (DALYs). Data came from cause-of-death registration systems, population health surveys, disease registries, hospitalization databases, and the scientific literes, poses a challenge for the Polish health-care system. IHD is still the leading cause of disease burden in Poland, but DALYs from IHD are declining. To further reduce disease burden, an integrated response focused on NCDs and population groups with disproportionally high burden is needed.Exosomes are extracellular vesicles (EVs) of ~20-200 nm diameter that shuttle DNAs, RNAs, proteins and other biomolecules between cells. The large number of biomolecules present in exosomes demands the frequent use of high-throughput analysis. This, in turn, requires technical replicates (TRs), and biological replicates (BRs) to produce accurate results. As the number and abundance of identified biomolecules varies between replicates (Rs), establishing the replicate variability predicted for the event under study is essential in determining the number of Rs required. Although there have been few reports of replicate variability in high throughput biological data, none of them focused on exosomes. Herein, we determined the replicate variability in protein profiles found in exosomes released from 3 lung adenocarcinoma cell lines, H1993, A549 and H1975. Since exosome isolates are invariably contaminated by a small percentage of ~200-300 nm microvesicles, we refer to our samples as exosome-enriched EVs (EE-EVs). We generated BRs of EE-EVs from each cell line, and divided each group into 3 TRs.

However, multiple primary survivors were more likely to report severe limitations in physical function than the single primary (PR = 1.48 (95% CI, 1.28-1.71)) and no-cancer (PR = 1.64 (95% CI, 1.42-1.88)) groups. Using a cane or walker and balance difficulties were also significantly more common among multiple primary survivors. CONCLUSIONS Despite a similar prevalence of comorbid medical conditions, severe functional limitations were significantly more common among multiple primary survivors than single primary survivors or individuals without cancer. IMPLICATIONS FOR CANCER SURVIVORS Assessment of functional status and treatment of physical deficits may be an especially critical component of care for older patients with a history of multiple cancer diagnoses.PURPOSES Cancer-related distress is known to persist long after completion of treatment. Factors related to distress are largely unexplored in colorectal cancer (CRC) survivors. We examined changes over time and risk factors for distress in CRC patients over the first year after surgery. METHODS We included 212 CRC patients with data at 6 and 12 months post-surgery from the ColoCare Study in Heidelberg, Germany. Sociodemographic and lifestyle factors, social support, and health-related quality of life (HrQOL) prior to surgery were evaluated as predictors of cancer-related distress. Distress was measured with the Cancer and Treatment Distress instrument (CTXD). Linear regression analyses examined associations between risk factors and distress. RESULTS Distress subscale scores varied significantly over time health burden subscale score increased (P less then .001), while finances (P = .004), medical demands (P less then .001), and identity (P less then .001) subscale scores decreased over time. Uncertainty and family strain subscale scores did not change. Younger age, lower income, advanced tumor stage, poorer social support, and poorer baseline HrQOL predicted higher level distress at 6 and 12 months. CONCLUSION Cancer-related distress continues unresolved after surgery. Although some risk factors are difficult to alter, those at highest risk can be identified earlier for possible preventive strategies. IMPLICATIONS FOR CANCER SURVIVORS Screening for risk factors pre-surgery would allow for targeted interventions including strategies to improve resources for those with low support, thereby reducing long-term distress in CRC survivors.BACKGROUND Nicotine, the pharmacologically active substance in both tobacco and many electronic cigarette (e-cigarette) liquids, is responsible for the addiction that sustains cigarette smoking. With 8 million deaths worldwide annually, smoking remains one of the major causes of disability and premature death. However, nicotine also plays an important role in smoking cessation strategies. OBJECTIVES The aim of this study was to develop a comprehensive, whole-body, physiologically based pharmacokinetic/pharmacodynamic (PBPK/PD) model of nicotine and its major metabolite cotinine, covering various routes of nicotine administration, and to simulate nicotine brain tissue concentrations after the use of combustible cigarettes, e-cigarettes, nicotine gums, and nicotine patches. METHODS A parent-metabolite, PBPK/PD model of nicotine for a non-smoking and a smoking population was developed using 91 plasma and brain tissue concentration-time profiles and 11 heart rate profiles. Among others, cytochrome P450 (CYP) 2A6 nding of the recent increase in youth e-cigarette use.PURPOSE Early squamous cell neoplasia (ESCN) in the oesophagus is a highly treatable condition. Lesions confined to the mucosal layer can be curatively treated endoscopically. We build a computer-assisted detection system that can classify still images or video frames as normal or abnormal with high diagnostic accuracy. METHODS We present a new benchmark dataset containing 68K binary labelled frames extracted from 114 patient videos whose imaged areas have been resected and correlated to histopathology. Our novel convolutional network architecture solves the binary classification task and explains what features of the input domain drive the decision-making process of the network. RESULTS The proposed method achieved an average accuracy of 91.7% compared to the 94.7% achieved by a group of 12 senior clinicians. Our novel network architecture produces deeply supervised activation heatmaps that suggest the network is looking at intrapapillary capillary loop patterns when predicting abnormality. CONCLUSION We believe that this dataset and baseline method may serve as a reference for future benchmarks on both video frame classification and explainability in the context of ESCN detection. Since dietary polyphenols have been shown to exert a protective effect against cell injury, we examined whether resveratrol (RSV, 3,5,4'-trihydroxy-trans-stilbene, a stilbenoid phenol), has a protective effect on astrocyte swelling following its exposure to ammonia, oxygen-glucose deprivation (OGD), or trauma in vitro. Ammonia increased astrocyte swelling, and pre- or post-treatment of astrocytes with 10 and 25 µM RSV displayed an additive effect, while 5 µM did not prevent the effect of ammonia. PURPOSE This study was performed to investigate the association between the use of pregabalin and injury. METHODS The study was based on a predefined cohort of patients aged ≥20 years who had been registered for ≥6 months and contributed to the Japan Medical Data Center claims database. All patients (cases) had been treated for injuries from January 2014 to December 2016. One-to-four case-control matching was performed for age, sex, calendar day of injury (index date), and follow-up duration. A conditional logistic regression analysis was performed to calculate the odds ratio (OR) for pregabalin use within 180 days prior to the index date between the matched cases and controls, with adjustment for comorbidities and relevant drug categories associated with a risk of injury. To minimize within-individual confounding, we also performed a case-crossover analysis to compare the odds of pregabalin use between a 30-day hazard period immediately before the injury and five consecutive 30-day control periods within individuals with injury. RESULTS Among the 2 324 974 people in the nested cohort, we identified 18 084 cases with injury and 71 885 matched controls. The proportion of pregabalin use was 1.7% (304/18 084) and 1.1% (803/71 885), respectively. The adjusted OR for injury was 1.22 (95% confidence interval [CI], 1.06-1.40). In the case-crossover analysis (n = 304), pregabalin use was also significantly associated with an increased risk of injury (adjusted OR, 1.48; 95% CI, 1.10-2.00). CONCLUSION This large database study using two different study designs consistently suggested that the use of pregabalin may be associated with an increased risk of injury. © 2020 John Wiley & Sons Ltd.PURPOSE Echo planar imaging is used widely for its imaging speed. However, its applications often suffer from ghost artifacts. In the community, an approach using three navigator echoes is used commonly for the artifact correction. Although this scheme is effective, as the matrix size increases for high-resolution imaging, the navigator echoes can contribute significantly to increasing the "required minimum TE." To overcome this issue, this work proposes the use of an alternative navigator echo scheme called the "TR-external" scheme. METHODS The TR-external scheme reduces the required minimum TE by allocating an additional excitation loop for the navigator echoes before every main excitation loop. In this work, a detailed analysis on the TR-external scheme was performed to assess its performance in comparison to the standard scheme. Visual fMRI was performed to check the feasibility of using the TR-external scheme for detecting functional signals. PURPOSE This study was performed to investigate the association between the use of pregabalin and injury. METHODS The study was based on a predefined cohort of patients aged ≥20 years who had been registered for ≥6 months and contributed to the Japan Medical Data Center claims database. All patients (cases) had been treated for injuries from January 2014 to December 2016. One-to-four case-control matching was performed for age, sex, calendar day of injury (index date), and follow-up duration. A conditional logistic regression analysis was performed to calculate the odds ratio (OR) for pregabalin use within 180 days prior to the index date between the matched cases and controls, with adjustment for comorbidities and relevant drug categories associated with a risk of injury. To minimize within-individual confounding, we also performed a case-crossover analysis to compare the odds of pregabalin use between a 30-day hazard period immediately before the injury and five consecutive 30-day control periods within individuals with injury. RESULTS Among the 2 324 974 people in the nested cohort, we identified 18 084 cases with injury and 71 885 matched controls. The proportion of pregabalin use was 1.7% (304/18 084) and 1.1% (803/71 885), respectively. The adjusted OR for injury was 1.22 (95% confidence interval [CI], 1.06-1.40). In the case-crossover analysis (n = 304), pregabalin use was also significantly associated with an increased risk of injury (adjusted OR, 1.48; 95% CI, 1.10-2.00). CONCLUSION This large database study using two different study designs consistently suggested that the use of pregabalin may be associated with an increased risk of injury. © 2020 John Wiley & Sons Ltd.PURPOSE Echo planar imaging is used widely for its imaging speed. However, its applications often suffer from ghost artifacts. In the community, an approach using three navigator echoes is used commonly for the artifact correction. Although this scheme is effective, as the matrix size increases for high-resolution imaging, the navigator echoes can contribute significantly to increasing the "required minimum TE." To overcome this issue, this work proposes the use of an alternative navigator echo scheme called the "TR-external" scheme. METHODS The TR-external scheme reduces the required minimum TE by allocating an additional excitation loop for the navigator echoes before every main excitation loop. In this work, a detailed analysis on the TR-external scheme was performed to assess its performance in comparison to the standard scheme. Visual fMRI was performed to check the feasibility of using the TR-external scheme for detecting functional signals. Chronic rejection is the major leading cause of morbidity and mortality after lung transplantation. Bronchiolitis obliterans syndrome (BOS), a fibroproliferative disorder of the small airways, is the main manifestation of chronic lung allograft rejection. We investigated, using transgenic ****, the mechanisms through which the deficiency of IL-1β/IL-18, Casp-1, or Fpr-1 genes could be protective in an experimental model of BOS, induced in **** by allogeneic heterotopic tracheal transplantation. https://www.selleckchem.com/products/PHA-665752.html Fpr-1 KO **** showed a marked reduction in histological markers of BOS and of mast cell numbers compared to other groups. In the last two decades, it has been largely demonstrated that many chemotherapeutics act by inhibiting early or late rRNA processing steps with consequent alteration of ribosome biogenesis and activation of nucleolar stress response. The overall result is cell cycle arrest and/or apoptotic cell death of cancer cells. Our previously data demonstrated that ribosomal protein uL3 is a key sensor of nucleolar stress activated by common chemotherapeutic agents in cancer cells lacking p53. We have also demonstrated that uL3 status is associated to chemoresistance; down-regulation of uL3 makes some chemotherapeutic drugs ineffective. Here, we demonstrate that in colon cancer cells, the uL3 status affects rRNA synthesis and processing with consequent activation of uL3-mediated nucleolar stress pathway. Transcriptome analysis of HCT 116p53-/- cells expressing uL3 and of a cell sub line stably depleted of uL3 treated with Actinomycin D suggests a new extra-ribosomal role of uL3 in the regulation of autophagic process. By using confocal microscopy and Western blotting experiments, we demonstrated that uL3 acts as inhibitory factor of autophagic process; the absence of uL3 is associated to increase of autophagic flux and to chemoresistance. Furthermore, experiments conducted in presence of chloroquine, a known inhibitor of autophagy, indicate a role of uL3 in chloroquine-mediated inhibition of autophagy. On the basis of these results and our previous findings, we hypothesize that the absence of uL3 in cancer cells might inhibit cancer cell response to drug treatment through the activation of cytoprotective autophagy. Based on the energy intake to basal metabolic rate ratio (EIBMR) and using a cut-off point of 1.35, 67% of participants were considered under-reporters (URs). While there was no between-group difference in BMI, URs had significantly (p less then 0.05) greater percentage body fat (%BF) and trunk fat (%TF) compared with non-URs. Regression analyses indicated accuracy of body perception and a discrepancy between current and ideal weight were associated with EIBMR, whereas the salience subscale of the BAQ was associated with reported EI. The study raises concerns regarding the validity of EI reported from young Japanese females as they are known to have a strong preoccupation with thinness, even with an acceptable BMI and health and nutritional knowledge.The development of monoclonal antibodies (mAbs) has provided vast opportunities to treat a wide range of diseases from cancer to viral infections. While plant-based production of mAbs has effectively lowered the upstream cost of mAb production compared to mammalian cell cultures, further optimization of downstream processing, especially in extending the longevity of Protein A resin by an effective bulk separation step, will further reduce the overall prohibitive cost of mAb production. In this study, we explored the feasibility of using aqueous two-phase separation (ATPS) in capturing and separating plant-made mAbs from host proteins. Our results demonstrated that an anti-West Nile virus mAb (E16) was efficiently separated from most plant host proteins by a single ATPS step, comprising the mixing of plant extracts containing Hydrophobin-Protein A fusion protein (HPA) and E16 and the subsequent incubation with an inexpensive detergent. This simple ATPS step yielded a highly enriched E16 mAb preparation with a recovery rate comparable to that of Protein A chromatography. The ATPS-enriched E16 retained its structural integrity and was fully functional in binding its target antigen. Notably, HPA-based ATPS was also effective in enriching E16 from plant host proteins when both HPA and E16 were produced in the same leaves, supporting the potential of further streamlining the downstream purification process. Thus, ATPS based on plant-produced HPA in unpurified extract is a cost-effective yet efficient initial capture step for purifying plant-made mAbs, which may significantly impact the approach of mAb purification.

RESULTS Of the 85,972 encounters with 465 physicians, 11% resulted in a corticosteroid. The median physician prescribing rate was 4.0% (range less then 1% to 81%). Corticosteroid receipt was associated with higher satisfaction versus receiving nothing (OR2.54; 95%CI2.25-2.87). Patients who received both an antibiotic and a corticosteroid reported the highest satisfaction (OR 3.91; 95%CI3.27-4.68). There was no correlation between individual physicians' corticosteroid and antibiotic prescribing rates. CONCLUSIONS Corticosteroid receipt was associated with patient satisfaction. Most physicians rarely prescribed corticosteroids, yet a small number prescribed them frequently. Identification of high prescribing physicians for educational interventions could reduce use of corticosteroids for acute respiratory tract infections. CONTEXT Patients who have suffered from persistent symptoms often undergo lumbar spinal surgery (LSS). Motor imagery should be added to postoperative home exercises to reduce patient complaints. OBJECTIVE The aim of this study was to compare the effects of home exercise plus motor imagery and only home exercise in patients undergoing LSS. DESIGN A randomized controlled study. SETTINGS This study was designed by researchers at Dokuz Eylul University. PARTICIPANTS Thirty-seven patients undergoing LSS were randomized to motor imagery group (n = 19) and control group (n = 18). MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES Pain was measured by Visual Analogue Scale, disability related to low **** pain by Oswestry Disability Index, pain-related fear by Tampa Scale of Kinesiophobia, depression by **** Depression Inventory, quality of life by World Health Organization Quality of Life Scale-Short Form (WHOQOL-BREF). All assessments were repeated in the preoperative period, three weeks after and six weeks after the surgery. INTERVENTIONS Motor imagery group underwent home exercise plus motor imagery program applied by voice recording. Control group underwent only home exercise program. Exercise program compliance was monitored by exercise diary and telephone calls once every week. RESULTS There was a significant improvement in pain at rest and during activity, disability, kinesiophobia, depression, physical health and psychological sub-parameters of WHOQOL-BREF between preoperative period, and the third week and sixth week in both groups (p less then 0.05). When comparing groups for gain scores, there was a more significant improvement in pain during activity in motor imagery group (p less then 0.05). Motor imagery should be addressed as an effective treatment after LSS. INTRODUCTION Disease-related malnutrition (DRM) is underdiagnosed and underreported despite its well-known association with a worse prognosis. The emergence of Big Data and the application of artificial intelligence in Medicine have revolutionized the way knowledge is generated. The aim of this study is to assess whether a Big Data tool could help us detect the amount of DRM in our hospital. METHODOLOGY This was a descriptive, retrospective study using the Savana Manager® tool, which allows for automatically analyzing and extracting the relevant clinical information contained in the free text of the electronic medical record. A search was performed using the term "malnutrition", comparing the characteristics of patients with DRM to the population of hospitalized patients between January 2012 and December 2017. RESULTS Among the 180,279 hospitalization records with a discharge report in that period, only 4,446 episodes (2.47%) included the diagnosis of malnutrition. The mean age of patients with DRM was 75 years (SD 16), as compared to 59 years (SD 25) for the overall population. There were no sex differences (51% male). In-hospital death occurred in 7.08% of patients with DRM and 2.98% in the overall group. Mean stay was longer in patients with DRM (8 vs. 5 days, P less then .0001) and there were no significant differences in the 72-hour readmission rate. The most common diagnoses associated with DRM were heart failure (35%), respiratory infection (23%), urinary infection (20%), and chronic kidney disease (15%). CONCLUSION Underdiagnosis of DRM remains a problem. Savana Manager® helps us to better understand the profile of these patients. L.U.In silico cancer models have demonstrated great potential as a tool to improve drug design, optimise the delivery of drugs to target sites in the host tissue and, hence, improve therapeutic efficacy and patient outcome. However, there are significant barriers to the successful translation of in silico technology from bench to bedside. More precisely, the specification of unknown model parameters, the necessity for models to adequately reflect in vivo conditions, and the limited amount of pertinent validation data to evaluate models' accuracy and assess their reliability, pose major obstacles in the path towards their clinical translation. This review aims to capture the state-of-the-art in in silico cancer modelling of vascularised solid tumour growth, and identify the important advances and barriers to success of these models in clinical oncology. RESULTS Of the 85,972 encounters with 465 physicians, 11% resulted in a corticosteroid. The median physician prescribing rate was 4.0% (range less then 1% to 81%). Corticosteroid receipt was associated with higher satisfaction versus receiving nothing (OR2.54; 95%CI2.25-2.87). Patients who received both an antibiotic and a corticosteroid reported the highest satisfaction (OR 3.91; 95%CI3.27-4.68). There was no correlation between individual physicians' corticosteroid and antibiotic prescribing rates. CONCLUSIONS Corticosteroid receipt was associated with patient satisfaction. Most physicians rarely prescribed corticosteroids, yet a small number prescribed them frequently. CONTEXT Patients who have suffered from persistent symptoms often undergo lumbar spinal surgery (LSS). Motor imagery should be added to postoperative home exercises to reduce patient complaints. OBJECTIVE The aim of this study was to compare the effects of home exercise plus motor imagery and only home exercise in patients undergoing LSS. DESIGN A randomized controlled study. SETTINGS This study was designed by researchers at Dokuz Eylul University. PARTICIPANTS Thirty-seven patients undergoing LSS were randomized to motor imagery group (n = 19) and control group (n = 18). MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES Pain was measured by Visual Analogue Scale, disability related to low back pain by Oswestry Disability Index, pain-related fear by Tampa Scale of Kinesiophobia, depression by Beck Depression Inventory, quality of life by World Health Organization Quality of Life Scale-Short Form (WHOQOL-BREF). All assessments were repeated in the preoperative period, three weeks after and six weeks after the surgery. INTERVENTIONS Motor imagery group underwent home exercise plus motor imagery program applied by voice recording. Control group underwent only home exercise program. Exercise program compliance was monitored by exercise diary and telephone calls once every week. RESULTS There was a significant improvement in pain at rest and during activity, disability, kinesiophobia, depression, physical health and psychological sub-parameters of WHOQOL-BREF between preoperative period, and the third week and sixth week in both groups (p less then 0.05). When comparing groups for gain scores, there was a more significant improvement in pain during activity in motor imagery group (p less then 0.05). INTRODUCTION Disease-related malnutrition (DRM) is underdiagnosed and underreported despite its well-known association with a worse prognosis. The emergence of Big Data and the application of artificial intelligence in Medicine have revolutionized the way knowledge is generated. The aim of this study is to assess whether a Big Data tool could help us detect the amount of DRM in our hospital. METHODOLOGY This was a descriptive, retrospective study using the Savana Manager® tool, which allows for automatically analyzing and extracting the relevant clinical information contained in the free text of the electronic medical record. A search was performed using the term "malnutrition", comparing the characteristics of patients with DRM to the population of hospitalized patients between January 2012 and December 2017. RESULTS Among the 180,279 hospitalization records with a discharge report in that period, only 4,446 episodes (2.47%) included the diagnosis of malnutrition. The mean age of patients with DRM was 75 years (SD 16), as compared to 59 years (SD 25) for the overall population. There were no sex differences (51% male). In-hospital death occurred in 7.08% of patients with DRM and 2.98% in the overall group. Mean stay was longer in patients with DRM (8 vs. 5 days, P less then .0001) and there were no significant differences in the 72-hour readmission rate. The most common diagnoses associated with DRM were heart failure (35%), respiratory infection (23%), urinary infection (20%), and chronic kidney disease (15%). CONCLUSION Underdiagnosis of DRM remains a problem. Savana Manager® helps us to better understand the profile of these patients. Addressing the social stigma of mental illness is of importance in Iraq where mentally ill patients experience the compounded disadvantages of inadequate health services and illness stigma.

Descriptive, and analytic statics procedure was operated as far as a convenience by using Excel 365 version as a data management tool.
About (80%) of the respondents revealed a moderate degree of stigmatising attitude towards mental illness with a Likert scale total equivalent score range of (2.34-3.669). About (20%) of respondents showed a low degree of stigmatising attitude towards mental illness, with a Likert scale total equivalent score range of (1-2.339).

The present study examined the role of risk taking and inhibitory control, key cognitive processes believed to govern behavioral regulation, as mechanisms that underlie the association between childhood maltreatment and the early stages of alcohol use. A sample of 129 maltreated adolescents and 102 socioeconomic status-matched, nonmaltreated adolescents and their parents completed three annual assessments, including computer-administered tasks and adolescent- and parent-report questionnaires, across ages 12-13 through 14-15 years. Childhood maltreatment was not directly associated with alcohol use in middle adolescence but was significantly associated with deficits in inhibitory control in early adolescence, which, in turn, led to significantly increased alcohol use in middle adolescence. Indeed, decreased inhibitory control was significant as a mediator, highlighting the salient role of this cognitive process in the early stages of alcohol use among maltreated adolescents.
Neurocognitive impairment is considered a core feature of mood disorders. Research has shown that neurocognitive impairment often persists beyond mood symptom resolution and can have significant deleterious effects on interpersonal relationships, academic achievement, occupational functioning and independent living. As such, neurocognitive impairment has become an important target for intervention. In this systematic review, we aimed to examine the extant literature to ascertain whether current standard evidence-based psychotherapies can improve neurocognitive functioning in mood disorders.
Studies examining changes in neurocognitive functioning following evidence-based psychotherapy were identified using MEDLINE, PsycINFO and Web of Science databases. Given the heterogeneity of study procedures, treatment protocols and patient samples, a narrative rather than meta-analytic review technique was employed.
Nineteen studies (21 articles) met inclusion criteria. There was preliminary evidence of improved executive functioning following evidence-based psychotherapy for Major Depressive Disorder and Bipolar Disorder. There was also some signal of reduced negative biases in emotional information processing following psychotherapy in depression. Due to methodological variability across studies however, it was difficult to draw clear conclusions.
Findings from the current review suggest that evidence-based psychotherapies may influence some aspects of neurocognitive functioning in mood disorders. This continues to be an ongoing area of importance and warrants further research.

Even in the era of intravitreal injection therapy (intravitreal operative injection of medication, IVOM) for the treatment of macular and retinal diseases, such as age-related macular degeneration (AMD), proliferative diabetic retinopathy (DR) and diabetic macular edema (DME) as well as proliferative stages and/or macular edema due to retinal vein occlusion (RVO), conventional retinal laser treatment is still of importance. It can be focally performed on an on-label basis for DME and macular edema due to branch RVO (BRVO) and its use as panretinal treatment for proliferative stages in retinal diseases as well as for the treatment of retinal holes is undisputed. The spectrum is extended by the treatment of less common diseases, such as retinal hemangioblastoma, macroaneurysms and subhyaloid macular hemorrhage. There is cause for concern that knowledge about the correct performance of retinal laser application might be shifted into the background due to an increase of IVOM treatment, which could lead to an increase in unnecessary errors. However, the benefits of intracorporeal anastomosis in reducing postoperative complications have not been demonstrated, although its technical feasibility has been proven in many studies. In this study, we investigated the impact of intracorporeal anastomosis in reducing postoperative complications after LTG. METHODS We analyzed 410 consecutive gastric cancer patients who underwent LTG between 2008 and 2018. Of these, 118 underwent intracorporeal anastomosis using linear staplers (overlap method), while 292 underwent extracorporeal anastomosis using a circular stapler. Short-term surgical outcomes including postoperative complications were compared between the two groups. RESULTS The two groups showed no significant differences in age, sex, comorbidity, and abdominal surgery history. D2 lymph node dissection was more frequently performed in the intracorporeal group because of the presence of more advanced cancer stages. The overall morbidity in the intracorporeal and extracorporeal group was 23.7% and 27.7%, respectively (p = 0.405). However, the intracorporeal group showed a significantly lower incidence of late complications (0.8% vs. 7.5%, p = 0.008). METHODS We used preset keywords to search the Cochrane Library, the Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health Literature (CINAHL), PubMed, and ProQuest databases for relevant studies published between 2000 and 2018, and data analysis was performed using Comprehensive Meta-Analysis (CMA) software (version 2.2.048) and SPSS software (version 19.0). In total, nine articles with complete data were included in our meta-analysis. RESULTS Fatigue conditions were compared before the start of therapy (baseline) and at 1 month (time 1), 3 months (time 2), 6 months (time 3), and 12 months (time 4) after the start of therapy. The standardized mean differences (SMDs) of the pooling effects size were 1.013 (95% confidence interval (CI) 0.217-1.810), - 0.551 (95% CI - 0.647 to - 0.456), - 0.330 (95% CI - 0.427 to - 0.233), and - 0.149 (95% CI - 0.221 to - 0.078), respectively. Subsequent analysis with a linear mixed effect model revealed that the estimate of the time variable was - 0.226 (p = 0.047), which indicates that the severity of fatigue varies over time and over the course of treatment. The results reveal that fatigue affects rectal cancer patients even before they start therapy. CONCLUSION Although fatigue worsened during the first month after cancer therapy, it gradually improved thereafter.PURPOSE Trastuzumab-based chemotherapy is usually administered through either a peripherally inserted central catheter (PICC) or a totally implanted vascular access device (PORT). As the most effective type of access is unknown, a feasibility trial, prior to conducting a large pragmatic trial, was undertaken. METHODS The trial methodology utilized the integrated consent model incorporating oral consent. Patients receiving trastuzumab-based neo/adjuvant chemotherapy for early-stage breast cancer were randomized to a PICC or PORT insertion. Feasibility was reflected through a combination of endpoints; however, the a priori definition of feasibility was > 25% of patients approached agreed to randomization and > 25% of physicians approached patients. Secondary outcomes included rates of line-associated complications such as thrombotic events requiring anticoagulation, line infections or phlebitis. RESULTS During the study period, 4/15 (26.7%) medical oncologists approached patients about study participation. Of 59 patients approached, 56 (94.9%) agreed to randomization, 29 (51.8%) were randomized to PICC and 27 (48.2%) to PORT access. Overall, 17.2% (5/29) and 14.8% (4/27) of patients had at least one line-associated complication in the PICC and PORT arms respectively. The study was terminated early due to slow accrual. CONCLUSION The study met its feasibility endpoints with respect to patient and physician engagement. However, the slow rate of accrual (56 patients in 2 years) means that conducting a large pragmatic trial would require additional strategies to make such a study possible. RESULTS Fatigue conditions were compared before the start of therapy (baseline) and at 1 month (time 1), 3 months (time 2), 6 months (time 3), and 12 months (time 4) after the start of therapy. The standardized mean differences (SMDs) of the pooling effects size were 1.013 (95% confidence interval (CI) 0.217-1.810), - 0.551 (95% CI - 0.647 to - 0.456), - 0.330 (95% CI - 0.427 to - 0.233), and - 0.149 (95% CI - 0.221 to - 0.078), respectively. Subsequent analysis with a linear mixed effect model revealed that the estimate of the time variable was - 0.226 (p = 0.047), which indicates that the severity of fatigue varies over time and over the course of treatment. The results reveal that fatigue affects rectal cancer patients even before they start therapy. CONCLUSION Although fatigue worsened during the first month after cancer therapy, it gradually improved thereafter.PURPOSE Trastuzumab-based chemotherapy is usually administered through either a peripherally inserted central catheter (PICC) or a totally implanted vascular access device (PORT). As the most effective type of access is unknown, a feasibility trial, prior to conducting a large pragmatic trial, was undertaken. METHODS The trial methodology utilized the integrated consent model incorporating oral consent. Patients receiving trastuzumab-based neo/adjuvant chemotherapy for early-stage breast cancer were randomized to a PICC or PORT insertion. Feasibility was reflected through a combination of endpoints; however, the a priori definition of feasibility was > 25% of patients approached agreed to randomization and > 25% of physicians approached patients. Secondary outcomes included rates of line-associated complications such as thrombotic events requiring anticoagulation, line infections or phlebitis. RESULTS During the study period, 4/15 (26.7%) medical oncologists approached patients about study participation. Of 59 patients approached, 56 (94.9%) agreed to randomization, 29 (51.8%) were randomized to PICC and 27 (48.2%) to PORT access. Overall, 17.2% (5/29) and 14.8% (4/27) of patients had at least one line-associated complication in the PICC and PORT arms respectively. The study was terminated early due to slow accrual. CONCLUSION The study met its feasibility endpoints with respect to patient and physician engagement. However, the slow rate of accrual (56 patients in 2 years) means that conducting a large pragmatic trial would require additional strategies to make such a study possible. Myeloid differentiation factor 2 (MD2) is an extracellular molecule indispensable for lipopolysaccharide recognition of TLR4. METHOD Apoe-/-Md2-/- **** and pharmacological inhibitor of MD2 were used in this study. We also reconstituted Apoe-/- **** with either Apoe-/- or Apoe-/-Md2-/- marrow-derived cells. Mechanistic studies were performed in primary macrophages, HEK-293T cells, and cell-free system. FINDING MD2 levels are elevated in atherosclerotic lesion macrophages, and MD2 deficiency or pharmacological inhibition in **** reduces the inflammation and stunts the development of atherosclerotic lesions in Apoe-/- **** fed with high-fat diet. Transfer of marrow-derived cells from Apoe-Md2 double knockout **** to Apoe knockout **** confirmed the critical role of bone marrow-derived MD2 in inflammatory factor induction and atherosclerosis development. Mechanistically, we show that MD2 does not alter ox-LDL uptake by macrophages but is required for TLR4 activation and inflammation via directly binding to ox-LDL, which triggers MD2/TLR4 complex formation and TLR4-MyD88-NFκB pro-inflammatory cascade. INTERPRETATION We provide a mechanistic basis of ox-LDL-induced macrophage inflammation, illustrate the role of macrophage-derived MD2 in atherosclerosis, and support the therapeutic potential of MD2 targeting in atherosclerosis-driven cardiovascular diseases. MAP9 promoter hypermethylation or downregulation was associated with poor survival and recurrence in patients with HCC. Mechanistically, ectopic expression of MAP9 in LO2 and HepG2 cell lines impaired cell proliferation, colony formation, migration and invasion, and induced cell apoptosis and cycle arrest, whereas knockdown of MAP9 in Miha cell line showed the opposite effects. We found that MAP9∆/∆ **** spontaneously developed a liver hyperplastic nodule and MAP9∆/∆hep accelerated diethylnitrosamine-induced HCC formation. METHODS The aim of this study was to evaluate the therapeutic benefits of targeting MTH1 with two chemical inhibitors, TH588 and TH1579 on human osteosarcoma cells. Preclinical efficacy of TH1579 was assessed in human osteosarcoma xenograft model on tumour growth and development of pulmonary metastases. FINDINGS MTH1 is overexpressed in OS patients and tumour cell lines, compared to mesenchymal stem cells. In vitro, chemical inhibition of MTH1 by TH588 and TH1579 decreases OS cells viability, impairs their cell cycle and increases apoptosis in OS cells. TH1579 was confirmed to bind MTH1 by CETSA in OS model. Moreover, 90 mg/kg of TH1579 reduces in vivo tumour growth by 80.5% compared to non-treated group at day 48. This result was associated with the increase in 8-oxo-dG integration into tumour cells DNA and the increase of apoptosis. Additionally, TH1579 also reduces the number of pulmonary metastases. INTERPRETATION All these results strongly provide a pre-clinical proof-of-principle that TH1579 could be a therapeutic option for patients with osteosarcoma. Contrast reversal is demonstrated in both amorphous samples, suggesting that intuitive image contrast interpretation is not always straightforward even for ultrathin, low atomic number samples. We briefly address how the scattering distributions obtained here can be used as an aid to interpret contrast in annular dark-field images, and how to set up imaging conditions to obtain intuitively interpretable contrast from samples with regions of significantly different thickness. The speed of sound is among the properties that can be used to estimate other important thermodynamic properties. In this work, a global and accurate model is proposed and used to estimate the speed of sound in 39 different DESs. This is the first general speed of sound model for DESs. The model does not require any thermodynamic properties other than the critical properties of the DESs, which are themselves calculated by group contribution methods, and in doing so, make the proposed method entirely independent of any experimental data as input. The results indicated that the average absolute relative deviation percentages (AARD%) of this model for 420 experimental data is only 5.4%. Accordingly, based on the achieved results, the proposed model can be used to predict the speeds of sound of DESs.The current research work presents a first attempt to investigate the welding attributes of Elium® thermoplastic resin and the fusion bonding using ultrafast ultrasonic welding technique. Additionally, we tested the effect of ****EV treatment on hair growth in a mouse model and human hair follicles. Data from western blot and flow cytometry showed that ****EVs were enriched with Wnt3a and Wnt7b, and more than 95% were associated with their membrane. The ****EVs significantly enhanced the proliferation, migration, and levels of hair-inductive markers of DP cells. Clinically, increased miR-629-3p expression tended to be associated with decreased survival in head and neck cancer patients. Like many other inorganic and organic nanoparticles, such as AuNPs, iron oxide and quantum dots, AgNPs have also been widely studied as components of advanced anticancer agents in order to better manage cancer in the clinic. AgNPs are typically produced by the action of reducing reagents on silver ions. In addition to numerous laboratory-based methods for reduction of silver ions, living organisms and natural products can be effective and superior source for synthesis of AgNPs precursors. Currently, plants, bacteria and fungi can afford biogenic AgNPs precursors with diverse geometries and surface properties. In this review, we summarized the recent progress and achievements in biogenic AgNPs synthesis and their potential uses as anticancer agents.

Biosynthesized silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) are a class of eco-friendly, cost-effective and biocompatible agents that have attracted attention for their possible biomedical and bioengineering applications. Like many other inorganic and organic nanoparticles, such as AuNPs, iron oxide and quantum dots, AgNPs have also been widely studied as components of advanced anticancer agents in order to better manage cancer in the clinic. AgNPs are typically produced by the action of reducing reagents on silver ions. In addition to numerous laboratory-based methods for reduction of silver ions, living organisms and natural products can be effective and superior source for synthesis of AgNPs precursors. Currently, plants, bacteria and fungi can afford biogenic AgNPs precursors with diverse geometries and surface properties.
