  • Currently, the most used pedagogical approach in pharmaceutical studies is transmissive teaching, in which students usually adopt a passive attitude. The aim of this article is to present the main characteristics of active learning, and to point how it can be integrated in pharmaceutical studies by the way of team-based learning. According to its different characteristics, team-based learning is an authentic method of active learning. This pedagogical method includes a preparation time, usually individually performed, and followed by the group work itself, in which the case method is the most frequently used. Team-based learning also allows students to work in interdisciplinarity and facilitates interactions between peers. The wide majority of the studies demonstrate that students acclaim this pedagogical approach as compared to more conventional teaching methods, and that their satisfaction increases their commitment in the tasks proposed in the course. Even though the results of studies concerning the impact of team-based learning on student retention and scores in tests are somewhat discordant, this pedagogical approach allows the acquisition or the reinforcement of skills that will be useful to students in their future professional life, like collaborative work and confidence in their ability to complete a task.In the context of increasing incidence of fungal infections worldwide, the availability of antifungal drugs was studied in Senegal, a country with limited resources where diagnosis of invasive fungal infections is not often established by lack of specialists and/or diagnostic tools. After a background on the country's situation with regard to fungal infections and the drug distribution network in Senegal, a compilation of the various available antifungals was presented before concluding with recommendations to prepare for a situation that could allow to treat appropriately invasive mycoses.It has been proved that chitosan oligosaccharide (COS) has a more favorable therapeutic applications such as wound healing and anti-tumor treatment, and can affect angiogenesis. For better understanding the effect of COS on angiogenic activities at cellular level, COS with different concentration and degree of polymerization (DP) were used to culture human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVECs) in this work. Cell proliferation activity, cell morphology, cell migration and angiogenesis associated factor expression of HUVECs were evaluated. The results indicated that COS at a high concentration of 400 μg/mL (COS(400)) and DP of 6 (Chitinhexaose Hydrochloride, COS6) had inhibitory effect on angiogenic activities of HUVECs. Specifically, COS(400) and COS6 inhibited cell proliferation activity, cell migration, and vascular endothelial cell growth factor (VEGF) expression of HUVECs. While COS at a low concentration ( less then 400 μg/mL) and suitable polymerization degrees (DP less then 6) had little significant effect on cell proliferation, migration, and VEGF expression of HUVECs, showing dose-dependent effect. These findings provided insight for the potential use of COS, for broadening its future applications in biomedical fields and functional materials area. It also helped guide the design and synthesis of chitosan-based materials as an angiogenesis inhibitor for anti-angiogenic therapy.
    Pain is a common, important symptom negatively affecting the well-being and quality of life of patients with hidradenitis suppurativa (HS). The aim of this study was to examine self-reported pain alleviating methods among outpatients attending a tertiary referral center.

    Consecutive patients with HS were invited to complete a questionnaire regarding their self-reported pain alleviating methods for HS associated pain. Additionally, the patients filled out the Dermatology Life Quality Index questionnaire and a visual analog scale for overall distress related to HS and for boil-associated pain in the past month. Information on disease severity and onset was obtained by interview and clinical examination.

    A total of 134 patients with a mean age of 38.3 years (SD 12.8) participated; 32% (n=43) had Hurley stage i, 52% (n=70) had Hurley stage ii, and 16% (n=21) had Hurley stage iii. Overall, to achieve pain relief, 82% (n=110) of the patients had previously drained pus from the lesions by manual pressure. Compared to patients who did not alleviate pain, patients who attempted to alleviate pain had a higher mean overall disease related distress score (7.43 [SD 2.81] vs. 5.47 [SD 3.37], P<.003), and a higher boil-associated pain score in the past month (6.56 [SD 3.07] vs. 4.39 [SD 3.88], P=.007).

    Nevi of special sites (NOSS) are benign melanocytic lesions that occur at particular sites. Although the histological features of NOSS have been described, their immunophenotypic features have not been fully characterized.

    To present the clinicopathological characteristics of a case series of NOSS and to characterize their immunohistochemical profile.

    Thirty-five NOSS were assessed using immunoperoxidase staining techniques for the melanocytic (S100, Melan-A, and HMB45) and proliferation (Ki-67) markers RESULTS All of the cases of NOSS showed concerning architectural changes (prominent lentiginous melanocytic proliferation, irregularities, crowdedness, and dyhesiveness of the nests), and cytological atypia (large nevomelanocytes with vesicular nuclei, clear cytoplasm, and dusty melanin pigment) that can lead to a misdiagnosis of atypical nevi or even melanomas. All of the cases of NOSS showed diffuse expression of S100 and Melan-A proteins. Ki-67 labeling index of the nevomelanocytes was extremely low. HMB45 protein expression was limited to the junctional and superficial dermal nevomelanocytes.

    These findings offer novel insight into how worry influences the immune system and emphasize the utility of a multi-methods approach to understanding the impact of worry on physical health.To explore the effects of copper (Cu) on energy metabolism and AMPK-mTOR pathway-mediated autophagy in kidney, a total of 240 one-day-old broiler chickens were randomized into four equal groups and fed on the diets with different levels of Cu (11, 110, 220, and 330 mg/kg) for 49 d. Results showed that excess Cu could induce vacuolar degeneration and increase the number of autophagosomes in kidney, and the adenosine triphosphate (ATP) level and mRNA levels of energy metabolism-related genes were decreased with the increasing dietary Cu level. Moreover, immunohistochemistry and immunofluorescence showed that the positive expressions of Beclin1 and LC3-II were mainly located in cytoplasm of renal tubular epithelial cells and increased significantly with the increasing levels of Cu. The mRNA levels of Beclin1, Atg5, LC3-I, LC3-II, Dynein and the protein levels of Beclin1, Atg5, LC3-II/LC3-I and p-AMPKα1/AMPKα1 were markedly elevated in treated groups compared with control group (11 mg/kg Cu). However, the mRNA and protein levels of p62 and p-mTOR/mTOR were significantly decreased with the increasing levels of Cu. Results indicate that Ti accumulated in the intestine, liver, and feces. Inflammatory infiltration damage was observed in the colonic epithelial tissue, and gut microbiota fluctuated with a decreased abundance of Lactobacilli in feces. Oral supplementation with Lactobacillus rhamnosus GG (LGG) lessened TiO2 NPs-induced colonic inflammatory injury, which might due to downregulation of nuclear factor kappa-B (NF-κB). Finally, a total of 25 articles were included in this meta-analysis. Stata 13.0 was applied to examine the heterogeneity among the studies and to calculate the combined effect estimates, percent variation (%) and 95% CI by selecting corresponding models. Additionally, sensitivity analysis and publication bias test were also conducted.

The objective of this study was to determine whether aldehyde exposure is associated with the prevalence of cardiovascular disease (CVD). We analyzed associations between aldehydes and CVD using data from 1962 adult participants in the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) from 2013 to 2014. Multivariable logistic regression and restricted cubic spline models were used to examine the association between aldehydes and CVD. The prevalence of CVD was 10.3%. After adjusting for confounding factors, including age, sex, education level, race, diabetes mellitus, smoking, alcohol use, hypertension, body mass index, the poverty-income ratio, physical activity, energy intake, high-density cholesterol (HDL) and low-density cholesterol (LDL), compared with the lowest quartiles, the odds ratios (ORs) with 95% confidence intervals (CIs) for CVD across the quartiles were 0.52 (0.31, 0.87), 0.73 (0.43, 1.22), and 1.13 (0.68, 1.86) for benzaldehyde and 1.48 (0.87, 2.52), 1.70 (1.01, 2.92), and 2.13 (1.19, 3.86) for isopentanaldehyde. There was no significant association between other aldehydes and CVD. The restricted cubic spline plot showed a J-curve relationship between benzaldehyde and CVD. The inflection point for the curve was found at a benzaldehyde level of 0.98 ng/ml. The ORs (95% CIs) for CVD were 0.51 (0.31, 0.86) and 1.58 (1.15, 2.17) on the left and right sides of the inflection point, respectively. Our results demonstrate a J-curve relationship between benzaldehyde and CVD. Isopentanaldehyde is positively associated with CVD. Further study is warranted to verify this association and to elucidate its underlying mechanisms.

  • What do corruption, resource overexploitation, climate inaction, vaccine hesitancy, traffic congestion, and even cancer metastasis have in common? All these socioeconomic and sociobiological phenomena are known as social dilemmas because they embody in one form or another a fundamental conflict between immediate self-interest and long-term collective interest. A shortcut to the resolution of social dilemmas has thus far been reserved solely for highly stylised cases reducible to dyadic games (e.g., the Prisoner's Dilemma), whose nature and outcome coalesce in the concept of dilemma strength. We show that a social efficiency deficit, measuring an actor's potential gain in utility or fitness by switching from an evolutionary equilibrium to a social optimum, generalises dilemma strength irrespective of the underlying social dilemma's complexity. We progressively build from the simplicity of dyadic games for which the social efficiency deficit and dilemma strength are mathematical duals, to the complexity of carcinogenesis and a vaccination dilemma for which only the social efficiency deficit is numerically calculable. The results send a clear message to policymakers to enact measures that increase the social efficiency deficit until the strain between what is and what could be incentivises society to switch to a more desirable state.Surveillance and diagnosis of parasitic Bonamia ostreae infections in flat oysters (Ostrea edulis) are prerequisites for protection and management of wild populations. In addition, reliable and non-lethal detection methods are required for selection of healthy brood oysters in aquaculture productions. Here we present a non-lethal diagnostic technique based on environmental DNA (eDNA) from water samples and demonstrate applications in laboratory trials. Forty oysters originating from Limfjorden, Denmark were kept in 30 ppt sea water in individual tanks. Water was sampled 6 days later, after which all oysters were euthanized and examined for infection, applying PCR. Four oysters (10%) were found to be infected with B. ostreae in gill and mantle tissue. eDNA purified from the water surrounding these oysters contained parasite DNA. A subsequent sampling from the field encompassed 20 oysters and 15 water samples from 5 different locations. Only one oyster turned out positive and all water samples proved negative for B. ostreae eDNA. With this new method B. ostreae may be detected by only sampling water from the environment of isolated oysters or isolated oyster populations. This non-lethal diagnostic eDNA method could have potential for future surveys and oyster breeding programs aiming at producing disease-free oysters.Alfalfa mosaic virus (AMV) is a worldwide distributed virus that has a very wide host range and causes significant crop losses of many economically important crops, including potato (Solanum tuberosum L.). In this study, the antiviral activity of Bacillus licheniformis strain POT1 against AMV on potato plants was evaluated. The dual foliar application of culture filtrate (CF), 24 h before and after AMV-inoculation, was the most effective treatment that showed 86.79% reduction of the viral accumulation level and improvement of different growth parameters. Moreover, HPLC analysis showed that a 20 polyphenolic compound was accumulated with a total amount of 7,218.86 and 1606.49 mg/kg in POT1-treated and non-treated plants, respectively. Additionally, the transcriptional analysis of thirteen genes controlling the phenylpropanoid, chlorogenic acid and flavonoid biosynthetic pathways revealed that most of the studied genes were induced after POT1 treatments. The stronger expression level of F3H, the key enzyme in flavonoid biosynthesis in plants, (588.133-fold) and AN2, anthocyanin 2 transcription factor, (97.005-fold) suggested that the accumulation flavonoid, especially anthocyanin, might play significant roles in plant defense against viral infection. The factorial experiments demonstrated the existence of a significant synergistic interaction effect between the pH and [H2O2]μl as expressed by the values of the coefficient of interactions and analysis of variance (ANOVA). Finally, the functionalization of the resultant fibrous catalysts was validated by electrokinetic and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy analysis.     What do corruption, resource overexploitation, climate inaction, vaccine hesitancy, traffic congestion, and even cancer metastasis have in common? All these socioeconomic and sociobiological phenomena are known as social dilemmas because they embody in one form or another a fundamental conflict between immediate self-interest and long-term collective interest. A shortcut to the resolution of social dilemmas has thus far been reserved solely for highly stylised cases reducible to dyadic games (e.g., the Prisoner's Dilemma), whose nature and outcome coalesce in the concept of dilemma strength. We show that a social efficiency deficit, measuring an actor's potential gain in utility or fitness by switching from an evolutionary equilibrium to a social optimum, generalises dilemma strength irrespective of the underlying social dilemma's complexity. We progressively build from the simplicity of dyadic games for which the social efficiency deficit and dilemma strength are mathematical duals, to the complexity of carcinogenesis and a vaccination dilemma for which only the social efficiency deficit is numerically calculable. The results send a clear message to policymakers to enact measures that increase the social efficiency deficit until the strain between what is and what could be incentivises society to switch to a more desirable state.Surveillance and diagnosis of parasitic Bonamia ostreae infections in flat oysters (Ostrea edulis) are prerequisites for protection and management of wild populations. In addition, reliable and non-lethal detection methods are required for selection of healthy brood oysters in aquaculture productions. Here we present a non-lethal diagnostic technique based on environmental DNA (eDNA) from water samples and demonstrate applications in laboratory trials. Forty oysters originating from Limfjorden, Denmark were kept in 30 ppt sea water in individual tanks. Water was sampled 6 days later, after which all oysters were euthanized and examined for infection, applying PCR. Four oysters (10%) were found to be infected with B. ostreae in gill and mantle tissue. eDNA purified from the water surrounding these oysters contained parasite DNA. A subsequent sampling from the field encompassed 20 oysters and 15 water samples from 5 different locations. Only one oyster turned out positive and all water samples proved negative for B. ostreae eDNA. With this new method B. ostreae may be detected by only sampling water from the environment of isolated oysters or isolated oyster populations. This non-lethal diagnostic eDNA method could have potential for future surveys and oyster breeding programs aiming at producing disease-free oysters.Alfalfa mosaic virus (AMV) is a worldwide distributed virus that has a very wide host range and causes significant crop losses of many economically important crops, including potato (Solanum tuberosum L.). In this study, the antiviral activity of Bacillus licheniformis strain POT1 against AMV on potato plants was evaluated. The dual foliar application of culture filtrate (CF), 24 h before and after AMV-inoculation, was the most effective treatment that showed 86.79% reduction of the viral accumulation level and improvement of different growth parameters. Moreover, HPLC analysis showed that a 20 polyphenolic compound was accumulated with a total amount of 7,218.86 and 1606.49 mg/kg in POT1-treated and non-treated plants, respectively. Additionally, the transcriptional analysis of thirteen genes controlling the phenylpropanoid, chlorogenic acid and flavonoid biosynthetic pathways revealed that most of the studied genes were induced after POT1 treatments. The stronger expression level of F3H, the key enzyme in flavonoid biosynthesis in plants, (588.133-fold) and AN2, anthocyanin 2 transcription factor, (97.005-fold) suggested that the accumulation flavonoid, especially anthocyanin, might play significant roles in plant defense against viral infection.     We report a 41-year-old female with progressive pain and swelling of the right thigh region for 1 year.

    We diagnosed it as obstruction of the superficial femoral artery and vein caused by external compression of the MO between the sartorius and vastus medialis of the thigh.

    Adherent tissues and mass were excised with care without damaging the femoral artery or the vein. However, normal morphology did not recover due to loss of elasticity of femoral vessels. Therefore, after resection of the narrowed region of the femoral artery, a femoral-to-femoral graft interposition using the greater saphenous vein was performed. At 12 months after the surgery, vessel reconstruction computed tomography images confirmed normal continuous flow of the femoral artery.

    Vascular compression and peripheral inflammatory response due to MO can cause loss of normal vascular morphology. Surgical excision of the mass and the involved femoral artery segment followed by femoral arterial reconstruction should be considered for lesions that do not spontaneously regress to prevent functional impairment and secondary complications in extremities.

Multivariate Cox regression analysis was performed to identify independent prognostic factors and a nomogram was constructed to predict the 3-year and 5-year survival rates of ILC patients based on Cox regression. Predictive values were compared between the new model and the American Joint Committee on Cancer staging system using the concordance index, calibration plots, integrated discrimination improvement, net reclassification improvement, and decision-curve analyses.In total, 4155 patients were identified. After multivariate Cox regression analysis, nomogram was established based on a new model containing the predictive variables of age, the primary tumor site, histology grade, American Joint Committee on Cancer TNM (tumor node metastasis) stages II, III, and IV, breast cancer subtype, therapy modality (surgery and chemotherapy). The concordance index for the training and validation cohorts were higher for the new model (0.781 and 0.832, respectively) than for the old model (0.733 and 0.779). The new model had good performance in the calibration plots. Net reclassification improvement and integrated discrimination improvement were also improved. Finally, decision-curve analyses demonstrated that the nomogram was clinically useful.We have developed a reliable nomogram for determining the prognosis and treatment outcomes of ILC. This study aimed to clarify the conditions indicate initial suspicion of CRC recurrence in different preoperative serum carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA) level groups, including positive physical signs/symptoms, elevated CEA level, positive radiologic studies results, and other elevated tumor markers.A total of 2268 patients with recurrence after curative surgery for CRC were enrolled in this study. The patients were classified into 3 groups according to preoperative serum CEA level (low, less then 2 ng/mL; intermediate, ≥2 and less then 5 ng/mL; and high, ≥5 ng/mL).Up to 63.6% of recurrence was suspected based on elevated CEA level in the high preoperative serum CEA level group. Patients in the low preoperative serum CEA level group had a higher rate of initial suspicion of recurrence based on positive physical signs or symptoms (36.7% vs 26.9% vs 20.4%, P less then .001) and positive radiologic findings (51.4% vs 40.7% vs 29.5%, P  less then  .001) than those in the intermediate and high preoperative serum CEA groups.Conditions indicate initial suspicion of recurrence varied in the different preoperative serum CEA level groups. In patients with low preoperative serum CEA level, the detection of recurrence depend on abnormal CEA level is less sensitive than intermediate and high preoperative serum CEA groups. We suggest that the strategy for CRC surveillance should not depend on serum CEA level alone. The signs or symptoms of patients, changes in postoperative serial CEA level, and ongoing radiologic or imaging findings must be cautiously monitored.
    Vascular dementia (VD) is a kind of acquired intelligence impairment syndrome caused by a series of cerebrovascular factors leading to brain tissue damage. Scalp acupuncture is widely used to treating VD. However, there is no a systematic review has been used to assess the efficacy and safety of scalp acupuncture therapy for VD. Therefore, the purpose of this paper is to systematically evaluate the effects of scalp acupuncture on VD.

    We will search the following databases from their inception to July 2020 PubMed, Chinese National Knowledge Infrastructure (CNKI), Wan Fang Database, Embase, Medline, Chinese Biomedical Literature Database (CBM), EBSCO, Web of Science, Technology Periodical Database (VIP), the Chongqing VIP Chinese Science and Cochrane Library. At the same time, we will retrieve other resources including conference articles, and gray literature. The randomized controlled trials (RCTs) in English or Chinese associated with scalp acupuncture for VD will be included. Our study data collection and analysis will be conducted independently by 2 reviewers, and Rev Man V.

  • We investigate the safety of the application of the Rigidfix cross-pin system via different tibial tunnels in the tibial fixation during anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) reconstruction.

    Five adult fresh cadaver knees were fixed with the Rigidfix cross-pins in the tibial fixation site during ACL reconstruction. Two different tibial tunnel groups were established in group A, the tunnel external aperture was placed at the 25° angle of coronal section; in group B, the tunnel external aperture was placed at the 45° angle of coronal section. The guide was placed at the plane 0.5 mm below articular facet through the tibial tunnel, with three rotation positions set at 0°, 30°, and 60° slopes. The incidences of iatrogenic injuries at tibial plateau cartilage (TPC), medial collateral ligament (MCL), and patellar tendon in three different slope angles were calculated in groups A and B and the results were analyzed by using chi square test.

    The iatrogenic injuries at MCL, TPC, and patellar tendon could occur after the Rigidfix cross-pin system was placed 5 mm below tibial plateau cartilage for ACL reconstruction. The incidences of TPC injury (χ
     = 5.662, P = 0.017) and MCL injury (P = 0.048, Fisher exact probability method) were significantly lower in group A than in group B. However, the incidence of patellar tendon injury showed no significant difference between these two groups (χ
     = 0.120, P = 0.729).

    Hericium erinaceus is a culinary and medicinal mushroom in Traditional Chinese Medicines.     The Affordable Care Act (ACA) has increased insurance coverage for people with HIV (PWH) in the United States. To inform health policy, it is useful to investigate how enrollment through ACA Exchanges, deductible levels, and demographic factors are associated with health care utilization and HIV clinical outcomes among individuals newly enrolled in insurance coverage following implementation of the ACA.

    Among PWH newly enrolled in an integrated health care system (Kaiser Permanente Northern California) in 2014 (N = 880), we examined use of health care and modeled associations between enrollment mechanisms (enrolled in a Qualified Health Plan through the California Exchange vs. other sources), deductibles (none, $1-$999 and > = $1000), receipt of benefits from the California AIDS Drug Assistance Program (ADAP), demographic factors, and three-year patterns of health service utilization (primary care, psychiatry, substance treatment, emergency, inpatient) and HIV outcomes (CD4 counts; viral suppression atllment via the Exchange and higher deductibles were negatively associated with some aspects of service utilization, high deductibles were associated with worse HIV outcomes, but support from ADAP appeared to help patients achieve viral suppression. Race/ethnic disparities remain important to address even among those with access to insurance coverage.

    This study aimed to obtain health utility parameters among Chinese breast cancer patients in different disease states for subsequent health economics model. In addition, we aimed to explore the feasibility of establishing a breast cancer health utility mapping model in China.

    Multiple patient-reported health attributes were assessed, including quality of life, which was measured by the Functional Assessment of Cancer Therapy-Breast (FACT-B) instrument; health utility and self-rated health, which were measured by the EuroQol-5 Dimension-5 Level (EQ-5D-5L) questionnaire. Multivariate regression models, including a linear regression model, an ordinal logistic regression model and a Tobit model, were employed to analyze health differences among 446 breast cancer patients. Subgroup analyses were performed to examine differences in multiple dimensions of health derived from the FACT-B and EQ-5D-5L instruments. A mapping function was used to estimate health utility from quality of life. Rank correlation analysesty of life by using a mapping function, were significantly correlated with directly measured health utility values (p < 0.001).

    We obtained the health utility and health-related quality of life (HRQoL) scores of Chinese breast cancer patients in different disease states. Mapping health utility values from quality of life using four disease states could be feasible in health economic modelling, but the mapping function may need further revision.
    We investigate the safety of the application of the Rigidfix cross-pin system via different tibial tunnels in the tibial fixation during anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) reconstruction. Five adult fresh cadaver knees were fixed with the Rigidfix cross-pins in the tibial fixation site during ACL reconstruction. Two different tibial tunnel groups were established in group A, the tunnel external aperture was placed at the 25° angle of coronal section; in group B, the tunnel external aperture was placed at the 45° angle of coronal section. The guide was placed at the plane 0.5 mm below articular facet through the tibial tunnel, with three rotation positions set at 0°, 30°, and 60° slopes. The incidences of iatrogenic injuries at tibial plateau cartilage (TPC), medial collateral ligament (MCL), and patellar tendon in three different slope angles were calculated in groups A and B and the results were analyzed by using chi square test. The iatrogenic injuries at MCL, TPC, and patellar tendon could occur after the Rigidfix cross-pin system was placed 5 mm below tibial plateau cartilage for ACL reconstruction. The incidences of TPC injury (χ  = 5.662, P = 0.017) and MCL injury (P = 0.048, Fisher exact probability method) were significantly lower in group A than in group B. However, the incidence of patellar tendon injury showed no significant difference between these two groups (χ  = 0.120, P = 0.729). When the Rigidfix cross-pin system is used for ACL reconstruction at the tibial fixation site, the external aperture of tibial tunnel should not be placed at the excessively posterosuperior site, to avoid MCL and TPC injuries. To inform health policy, it is useful to investigate how enrollment through ACA Exchanges, deductible levels, and demographic factors are associated with health care utilization and HIV clinical outcomes among individuals newly enrolled in insurance coverage following implementation of the ACA. Among PWH newly enrolled in an integrated health care system (Kaiser Permanente Northern California) in 2014 (N = 880), we examined use of health care and modeled associations between enrollment mechanisms (enrolled in a Qualified Health Plan through the California Exchange vs. other sources), deductibles (none, $1-$999 and > = $1000), receipt of benefits from the California AIDS Drug Assistance Program (ADAP), demographic factors, and three-year patterns of health service utilization (primary care, psychiatry, substance treatment, emergency, inpatient) and HIV outcomes (CD4 counts; viral suppression atllment via the Exchange and higher deductibles were negatively associated with some aspects of service utilization, high deductibles were associated with worse HIV outcomes, but support from ADAP appeared to help patients achieve viral suppression. Multiple patient-reported health attributes were assessed, including quality of life, which was measured by the Functional Assessment of Cancer Therapy-Breast (FACT-B) instrument; health utility and self-rated health, which were measured by the EuroQol-5 Dimension-5 Level (EQ-5D-5L) questionnaire. Multivariate regression models, including a linear regression model, an ordinal logistic regression model and a Tobit model, were employed to analyze health differences among 446 breast cancer patients. Subgroup analyses were performed to examine differences in multiple dimensions of health derived from the FACT-B and EQ-5D-5L instruments. A mapping function was used to estimate health utility from quality of life. The A-NVs@ICG were prepared and exhibited satisfactory targeting effects in HER2-overexpressing PHCC cells. In vivo fluorescence and photoacoustic imaging demonstrated that A-NVs@ICG promoted the accumulation of ICG in PHCC tissue, leading to enhanced tumor regression and improved anti-cancer effects when combined with photoirradiation. Furthermore, in tumor-bearing ****, SA-modified liposomes displayed a greater tumor-targeting ability and stronger tumor treatment efficacy, which were mediated by the neutrophil infiltration induced by inflammatory factors released from the tumor microenvironment. In conclusion, SA-modified liposomal DOX was shown to be an effective neutrophil-mediated drug delivery system for tumor therapy.

A consequence of poor wastewater management is the discharge of untreated wastewater carrying infectious SARS-CoV-2 into natural water systems that are home to marine mammals. Here, we predict the susceptibility of marine mammal species using a modelling approach. We identified that many species of whale, dolphin and seal, as well as otters, are predicted to be highly susceptible to infection by the SARS-CoV-2 virus. In addition, geo-mapping highlights how current wastewater management in Alaska may lead to susceptible marine mammal populations being exposed to the virus. Localities such as Cold Bay, Naknek, Dillingham and Palmer may require additional treatment of their wastewater to prevent virus spillover through sewage. Since over half of these susceptibility species are already at risk worldwide, the release of the virus via untreated wastewater could have devastating consequences for their already declining populations. For these reasons, we discuss approaches that can be taken by the public, policymakers and wastewater treatment facilities to reduce the risk of virus spillover in our natural water systems. Thus, we indicate the potential for reverse zoonotic transmission of COVID-19 and its impact on marine wildlife; impacts that can be mitigated with appropriate action to prevent further damage to these vulnerable populations.Coastal cities face increasing natural disaster risks. Only a few researchers have examined practical guidelines for a green infrastructure network in coastal cities. The Haeundae District in South Korea was chosen as the study site. We constructed a green infrastructure network using space syntax and GIS network analysis. The results of this study showed that first, we created an integrated green infrastructure network by building evacuation route networks and urban ecological networks. Second, we evaluated the evacuation function and flood risk. Finally, we proposed green infrastructure network planning for coastal disasters, including hub and corridor design. This study can contribute to establishing strategies to reduce vulnerability in coastal cities.In the past century, the evergreen woody shrub, Rhododendron maximum, has experienced habitat expansion following foundational tree species die-off in eastern US deciduous forests. Rhododendron can potentially alter stream chemistry, temperature, trophic dynamics, and in-stream decomposition rates, given its dominance in riparian areas. Here we conducted two operational-scale (3 ha) riparian treatments that removed rhododendron through cutting alone (CR, canopy removal), or removing both the rhododendron canopy and forest floor using cutting and prescribed fire (CFFR, canopy and forest floor removal). We expected that rhododendron shrub removal, with or without soil organic horizon removal, would increase soil nutrient availability and subsequently alter stream pH, acid neutralizing capacity (ANC), inorganic nitrogen (NO3-N, NH4-N), total dissolved inorganic nitrogen, dissolved organic carbon (DOC), calcium (Ca), potassium (K), and magnesium (Mg). We hypothesized that responses would occur more quickly in theay even lower stream NO3-N concentrations long term.To understand the removal and transformation behaviors of unconventional air pollutants (polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, heavy metals and carbonyl compounds) in the flue gas in cement kiln-end facilities, including SP boiler, a slide stream SCR-DeNOx system, raw mill and baghouse filter, the gas and particle matter samples at the inlets and outlets of each kiln-end installation were collected and the contents of the unconventional air pollutants were measured. The results showed that the concentrations of the polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in particulate and gas-phase, heavy metals in the particulate matter were 17.5 μg m-3, 48.7 μg m-3 and 3113.1 μg m-3 at the inlet of the SP boiler, and decreased to 0.6 μg m-3, 17.7 μg m-3 and 39.7 μg m-3, respectively, while the concentrations of carbonyl compounds in gas-phase increased from 1988.5 μg m-3 to 2844.5 μg m-3 after flue gas successively passed through the kiln-end facilities. The cooling of flue gas and the precipitation of coarse particulate matter in the SP boiler resulted in a significant decrease of PAHs concentration in both gas-phase and particulate-phase, as well as the heavy metal concentration in the particulate-phase, while the SP boiler hardly had any influence on the removal and transformation of carbonyl compounds. Grinding and heat exchange in the raw mill accelerated the volatilization of compounds with the low boiling point in the raw meal, which increased concentrations of gas-phase PAHs and carbonyl compounds. When flue gas passed through the baghouse filter, almost all particulate-phase PAHs, heavy metals and most of the gas-phase PAHs, were removed while the carbonyl compounds concentration maintained unchanged. Furthermore, some portion of gas-phase PAHs and carbonyl compounds were removed by the SCR-DeNOx system.

Here we conducted two operational-scale (3 ha) riparian treatments that removed rhododendron through cutting alone (CR, canopy removal), or removing both the rhododendron canopy and forest floor using cutting and prescribed fire (CFFR, canopy and forest floor removal). We expected that rhododendron shrub removal, with or without soil organic horizon removal, would increase soil nutrient availability and subsequently alter stream pH, acid neutralizing capacity (ANC), inorganic nitrogen (NO3-N, NH4-N), total dissolved inorganic nitrogen, dissolved organic carbon (DOC), calcium (Ca), potassium (K), and magnesium (Mg). We hypothesized that responses would occur more quickly in theay even lower stream NO3-N concentrations long term.To understand the removal and transformation behaviors of unconventional air pollutants (polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, heavy metals and carbonyl compounds) in the flue gas in cement kiln-end facilities, including SP boiler, a slide stream SCR-DeNOx system, raw mill and baghouse filter, the gas and particle matter samples at the inlets and outlets of each kiln-end installation were collected and the contents of the unconventional air pollutants were measured. The results showed that the concentrations of the polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in particulate and gas-phase, heavy metals in the particulate matter were 17.5 μg m-3, 48.7 μg m-3 and 3113.1 μg m-3 at the inlet of the SP boiler, and decreased to 0.6 μg m-3, 17.7 μg m-3 and 39.7 μg m-3, respectively, while the concentrations of carbonyl compounds in gas-phase increased from 1988.5 μg m-3 to 2844.5 μg m-3 after flue gas successively passed through the kiln-end facilities. The cooling of flue gas and the precipitation of coarse particulate matter in the SP boiler resulted in a significant decrease of PAHs concentration in both gas-phase and particulate-phase, as well as the heavy metal concentration in the particulate-phase, while the SP boiler hardly had any influence on the removal and transformation of carbonyl compounds. Grinding and heat exchange in the raw mill accelerated the volatilization of compounds with the low boiling point in the raw meal, which increased concentrations of gas-phase PAHs and carbonyl compounds. When flue gas passed through the baghouse filter, almost all particulate-phase PAHs, heavy metals and most of the gas-phase PAHs, were removed while the carbonyl compounds concentration maintained unchanged. Furthermore, some portion of gas-phase PAHs and carbonyl compounds were removed by the SCR-DeNOx system.

Each of these enzymes have unique characteristics, but maybe more noteworthy is the ability of individual CerS isoform to produce a ceramide with a characteristic acyl chain distribution. As key regulators of sphingolipid metabolism, CerSs highlight their unique characteristics and have emerging roles in regulating programmed cell death, cancer and many other aspects of biology. However, the role of CerSs in lung cancer has not been fully elucidated. In this study, there was no significant change in the sequence or copy number of CerSs gene, which could explain the stability of malignant tumor development through COSMIC database. In addition, gene expression in lung cancer was examined using the OncomineTM database, and the prognostic value of each gene in non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) was analyzed by Kaplan-Meier analysis. The results showed that high mRNA expression levels of CerS2, CerS3, CerS4 and CerS5 in all NSCLC patients were associated with improved prognosis. Among them, CerS2 and CerS5 are also highly expressed in adenocarcinoma (Ade), but not in squamous cell carcinoma (SCC). In contrast, high or low expression of CerS1 and CerS6 no difference was observed in patients with NSCLC, Ade and SCC. Integrated the data of this study suggested that these CerSs may be a potential tumor markers or drug target of new research direction.
    Self-inflicted enucleation, also known as auto-enucleation (AE) or Oedipism, is an uncommon and severe form of ocular injury which presents as an ophthalmic and psychiatric emergency. Usually known to occur with untreated psychosis, this case is a rare report which demonstrates AE as a result of a subsequently diagnosed drug induced psychosis. Participant age and chronic condition status were controlled for in all analyses. Time spent consuming news, social media, and health website information was not related to risk perceptions. Time spent on health websites predicted time spent having interpersonal conversations about COVID-19, as well as general efficacy levels. Following the Extended Parallel Process Model, perceived severity, perceived susceptibility, and general perceived efficacy predicted preventative behaviors. The vast majority of participants did report taking preventative action against COVID-19, most commonly in the form of hand washing, with many enacting stronger preventative behaviors that had yet to be recommended for the general population.

This study aimed to develop a context-specific, culturally-appropriate training intervention for South Florida CHWs to educate Latinx immigrant farmworkers on breast cancer and early detection.

    A community-based participatory research (CBPR) study, conducted 2017-2019, informed the design of a training curriculum for CHWs and educational dissemination materials. Twenty-two CHWs were trained and knowledge gains were measuring using a one-group pre-and post-test design. Triangulated evaluation consisted of field observations of CHW-client interactions, CHW self-reports, and rapid assessment surveys of community members.

    A community stakeholder-informed breast cancer training curriculum resulted in significant, sustained breast cancer knowledge gains among CHWs when comparing pre-, post-, and 4-6 month post-training follow-up test scores. Fieng intervention design can enable future train-the-trainer approaches to disseminate and scale-up evidence-based health education interventions.

The present study therefore sought to identify novel sex-related biomarkers of bevacizumab/erlotinib (BE) responses in non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) patients.

    The exon array data in the Gene Expression Omnibus (GEO) dataset were analyzed in order to identify patterns of mRNA and lncRNA expression associated with BE resistance in NSCLC. These differentially expressed (DE) lncRNAs and mRNAs were identified via DE Analysis Filtering. These DE mRNAs were then assessed for their potential functional roles via pathway enrichment analyses, with overlapping functions possibly associated with the BE resistance. The mRNAs in these overlapping groups were then assessed for their correlations with patient survival, and lncRNA-mRNA co-expression networks were generated for each conduct a global profiling of the relationship between lncRNA and mRNA expression patterns, patient sex, and BE responses in individuals suffering from NSCLC. Together these results suggest that the integrative lncRNA-mRNA expression analyses may offer invaluable new therapeutic insights that can guide the tailored treatment of lung cancer in order to ensure optimal BE responses.Eradication of HIV-1 by the "kick and kill" strategy requires reactivation of latent virus to cause death of infected cells by either HIV-induced or immune-mediated apoptosis. Furthermore, HIV-1 producing CD4 T cells expressed more BCL2 than uninfected cells, both in vivo and after ex vivo reactivation.
