    Iron deficiency (ID) is the leading single-nutrient deficiency in the world. Anaemia is a common outcome of ID that affects half of pregnancies worldwide with serious consequences for child development. Whether haematologic indices and biomarkers of iron status in pregnant women correlate with those of their neonates is unclear. This systematic review evaluated studies comparing haematologic and iron status indices in pregnant women and their newborns/neonates.

    We searched MEDLINE, EMBASE, CINAHL, and Web of Science from database inception until March 2020 for primary studies comparing haematologic and iron status indices between women and their newborns up to 48h after birth. We summarized the results descriptively and calculated pooled correlation coefficients in mothers and newborns/neonates using the Schmidt-Hunter method. The protocol was registered at PROSPERO International Prospective Register of Systematic Reviews (Registration number CRD42018093094).

    Sixty-five studies were included. Pooled correlation coefficients for biomarkers of iron status in mothers and newborns/neonates were 0.13 (ferritin), 0.42 (hepcidin), 0.30 (serum/plasma iron), 0.09 (transferrin), 0.20 (transferrin saturation), and 0.16 (total iron binding capacity). Pooled correlation coefficients for haematological indices in mothers and newborns/neonates were 0.15 (haemoglobin), 0.15 (haematocrit), 0.25 (mean cell/corpuscular haemoglobin), 0.22 (mean cell/corpuscular volume).

    Maternal biomarkers of iron and haematologic status correlate poorly with those in newborns/neonates. These results underscore a need for alternative approaches to estimate foetal/neonatal iron status and haematological indices.

Here we show thirty-four X-ray crystallographic structures of the PPARα ligand-binding domain, which are composed of a "Center" and four "Arm" regions, in complexes with five endogenous fatty acids, six fibrates in clinical use, and six synthetic PPARα agonists. High-resolution structural analyses, in combination with coactivator recruitment and thermostability assays, demonstrate that stearic and palmitic acids are presumably physiological ligands; coordination to Arm III is important for high PPARα potency/selectivity of pemafibrate and GW7647; and agonistic activities of four fibrates are enhanced by the partial agonist GW9662. The combination of continuous flow technology and electrochemistry is a potent means to enable industry to implement large scale electrosynthesis. Indeed, flow electrosynthesis helps overcome problems that mainly arise from macro batch electro-organic systems, such as mass transfer, ohmic drop, and selectivity, but this is still far from being a flawless and generic applicable process. As a result, a notable increase in research on methodology and hardware sophistication has emerged, and many hitherto uncharted chemistries have been achieved. To better help the commercialization of wide-scale electrification of organic synthesis, we highlight in this perspective the advances made in large-scale flow electrosynthesis and its future trajectory while pointing out the main challenges and key improvements of current methodologies.Colon cancer remains the third most common cause of cancer in the US, and the third most common cause of cancer death. At least 25% of patients still present with metastatic disease, and at least 25-30% will develop metastatic colon cancer in the course of their disease. While chemotherapy and surgery remain the mainstay of treatment, understanding the fundamental cellular niche and mechanical properties that result in metastases would facilitate both prevention and cure. Advances in biomaterials, novel 3D primary human cells, modelling using microfluidics and the ability to alter the physical environment, now offers a unique opportunity to develop and test impactful treatment.

  • The self-repair ability of temporomandibular joint (TMJ) cartilage is limited. Hypoxia-inducible factor-1 alpha (HIF-1alpha) may induce stem cells to promote chondrogenic repair.     Depth of invasion (DOI) is an independent predictor of regional metastasis in oral squamous cell carcinoma. Measurement criteria for DOI were modified in the American Joint Committee on Cancer (AJCC) eighth edition. The purpose of this study was to compare DOI AJCC seventh (DOI7) and eighth (DOI8) edition criteria on frozen section accuracy for decisions regarding elective neck dissection (END) in cT1N0 oral squamous cell carcinoma.

    A blinded, retrospective, comparative study of patients who underwent ablative surgery at the University of Michigan was completed. The predictor variable was criteria for DOI measurement. The outcome variables were concordance between DOI7 and DOI8 measurements and accuracy using thresholds for END. Effect of tumor growth pattern and worst pattern of invasion, and the difference between DOI8 on frozen and permanent specimen were assessed.

The aim of this study was to assess the effect of the maxillary and/or mandibular movements on the pharyngeal airway volume and the minimum cross-sectional area using 3-dimensional cone-beam computed tomography voxel-based superimposition.

    The investigators designed and implemented a retrospective cohort study composed of patients with dentofacial deformity subjected to orthognathic surgery. The predictor variables were the surgical movements performed at surgery. The primary outcome variables were the pharyngeal airway volume and minimum cross-sectional area measured preoperatively, at 1- and 12-month follow-up. Skeletal and volumetric relapse and stability were recorded as secondary outcomes at 1 and 12months, respectively. Descriptive, bivariate and correlation analyses were computed.     Leukocyte- and platelet-rich fibrin (L-PRF) has been used for alveolar ridge preservation (ARP) in postextraction tooth sockets. However, current reports have measured its effectiveness in linear measurements of 3-dimensional ridge preservation. The purpose of this study was to determine the effectiveness of the use of L-PRF filling versus natural clot blood healing in ARP according to the clinical, radiographic, and volumetric measurements of postextraction tooth sockets.

    A split-mouth randomized clinical trial was designed. Healthy patients who needed bilateral extraction of upper third molars were selected. After the tooth extraction, the socket was filled and distributed randomly with L-PRF and the contralateral socket only with the blood clot. The dimensional change of soft tissue healing around the sockets, and the length, depth, and difference of bone formation were examined using standardized periapical radiographs. Volumetric measurement variation of the sockets was evaluated by 3-dimensional scan ARP techniques.Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) induces a wide range of disease severity, ranging from asymptomatic infection to a life-threating illness, particularly in the elderly population and individuals with comorbid conditions. Among individuals with serious coronavirus 2019 (COVID-19) disease, acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) is a common and often fatal presentation. Animal models of SARS-CoV-2 infection that manifest severe disease are needed to investigate the pathogenesis of COVID-19-induced ARDS and evaluate therapeutic strategies. We report two cases of ARDS in two aged African green monkeys (AGMs) infected with SARS-CoV-2 that had pathological lesions and disease similar to severe COVID-19 in humans. We also report a comparatively mild COVID-19 phenotype characterized by minor clinical, radiographic, and histopathologic changes in the two surviving, aged AGMs and four rhesus macaques (RMs) infected with SARS-CoV-2. Notable increases in circulating cytokines were observed in three of four infected, aged AGMs but not in infected RMs.

  • Based on the presented data from the two regions in the Czech Republic and the prediction model, several trends emerged. There appears to be a significant difference in the annual direct costs per person diagnosed with AD depending on the region in which they reside. This may lead to a significant inequality of the services a person can acquire followed by subsequent social issues that can manifest as a lower quality of life. Furthermore, given the prediction of the growing AD population, the costs expressed in constant prices based on the year 2020 will increase almost threefold during the period 2020-2070. The predicted threefold increase will place additional financial pressure on all stakeholders responsible for social and healthcare services, as the current situation is already challenging.Microspores can be developmentally reprogrammed by the application of different stress treatments to initiate an embryogenic pathway leading to the production of doubled haploid (DH) plants. Epigenetic modifications are involved in cell reprogramming and totipotency in response to stress. To increase microspore embryogenesis (ME) efficiency in bread wheat, the effect of the histone deacetylase inhibitor trichostatin A (TSA) has been examined in two cultivars of wheat with different microspore embryogenesis response. Diverse strategies were assayed using 0-0.4 µM TSA as a single induction treatment and after or simultaneously with cold or mannitol stresses. The highest efficiency was achieved when 0.4 µM TSA was applied to anthers for 5 days simultaneously with a 0.7 M mannitol treatment, producing a four times greater number of green DH plants than mannitol. Ultrastructural studies by transmission electron microscopy indicated that mannitol with TSA and mannitol treatments induced similar morphological changes in early stages of microspore reprogramming, although TSA increased the number of microspores with 'star-like' morphology and symmetric divisions. The effect of TSA on the transcript level of four ME marker genes indicated that the early signaling pathways in ME, involving the TaTDP1 and TAA1b genes, may be mediated by changes in acetylation patterns of histones and/or other proteins.Tunicates are marine invertebrates whose tadpole-like larvae feature a highly simplified version of the chordate body plan. Diverse strategies were assayed using 0-0.4 µM TSA as a single induction treatment and after or simultaneously with cold or mannitol stresses. The highest efficiency was achieved when 0.4 µM TSA was applied to anthers for 5 days simultaneously with a 0.7 M mannitol treatment, producing a four times greater number of green DH plants than mannitol. The article presents the first published listing of pyraloid moth species held in three museum collections of the Croatian Natural History Museum in Zagreb. The list contains 148 taxa in total, 61 from the Igalffy collection, 96 from the Koča collection, and 96 from the Kučinić collection. Altogether, 96 species from the family Crambidae and 52 species from the family Pyralidae are listed.Species from almost all classes of ciliates are prone to be found inhabiting bromeliads in the Neotropics, from Mexico to Brazil, and the Antilles. Studies of ciliates recorded from bromeliads have been carried out from few bromeliad species, mainly in tropical forest. We compiled all available data of free living and sessile ciliates from bromeliads, including their geographic distribution and bromeliad identity. We provide a list of 170 ciliate species that have been recorded in 52 epiphytic and terrestrial bromeliad species, distributed in ten Neotropical countries .     The role of postoperative radiation therapy (PORT) for thymoma is under debate, especially in patients aged ≥60 years with an advanced stage (Masaoka stages III and IV). We aimed to evaluate the efficacy of PORT for thymoma in a population-based registry.

    A retrospective analysis of the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER) database was conducted to compare the outcomes of thymoma patients with or without PORT. The primary outcomes were overall survival (OS) and cancer-specific survival (CSS). Conditional inference tree analyses were performed for risk classification according to the study variables. Cox regression was performed to evaluate the prognostic effect of PORT in the specific subgroups.

    A total of 2,236 patients were included. The conditional inference tree analysis identified that an age ≥60, a Masaoka stage ≥3, and the year of diagnosis were important factors when classifying patients into prognostic subgroups. PORT was found to be a protective predictor of OS in patients aged ≥60 years, those with a Masaoka stage III-IV, and those diagnosed after 2005. Further subgroup analyses revealed that PORT was significantly associated with a better OS (HR = 0.77) in patients aged ≥60 years, whereas it was not significantly associated with CSS.

Linear mixed model or piecewise linear mixed model analyses with a time point of 24 months of age were performed.

    There were 132 patients, including 26 patients in the agenesis group, 35 in the MCDK group, and 71 in the nephrectomy group. The nephrectomy group showed the largest baseline kidney size (7.4 cm vs. 5.3 cm in the agenesis group [P<0.001] and 5.2 cm in the MCDK group [P<0.001]) and the smallest overall growth slope (0.04 cm/mo vs. 0.06 cm/mo in the agenesis group [P=0.004] and 0.07 cm/mo in the MCDK group [P<0.001]).   • The aim of this study was to compare long-term mortality following diagnosis of pulmonary nontuberculous mycobacterial (NTM) disease between patients with and without rheumatoid arthritis (RA) and to evaluate predictive factors for death outcomes.

    We reviewed the electronic medical records of all patients who were newly diagnosed with pulmonary NTM disease at participating institutions between August 2009 and December 2018. Patients were followed until death, loss to follow-up, or the end of the study. Taking into consideration the presence of competing risks, we used the cumulative incidence function with Gray's test and Fine-Gray regression analysis for survival analysis.

    A total of 225 patients (34 RA patients and 191 non-RA controls) were followed, with a mean time of 47.5 months. Death occurred in 35.3% of RA patients and 25.7% of non-RA patients. An exacerbation of pulmonary NTM disease represented the major cause of death. The estimated cumulative incidence of all-cause death at 5 years was 24% fong-term mortality compared with non-RA patients. In turn, OsARF12 activates the down-stream OsWRKY13 expression through direct binding to its promoter, loss-of-function mutants of oswrky13 exhibit reduced resistance. These results demonstrated that OsARF 11, 12 and 16 differentially regulate rice antiviral defense.     Intramyocardial hemorrhage following reperfusion is strongly associated with major adverse cardiovascular events in myocardial infarction (MI) patients; yet the mechanisms contributing to these outcomes are not well understood. Large animal models have been used to investigate intramyocardial hemorrhage, but they are exorbitantly expensive and difficult to use for mechanistic studies. In contrast, rat models are widely used to investigate mechanistic aspects of cardiovascular physiology, but a rat model that consistently recapitulates the characteristics of an hemorrhagic MI does not exist. To bridge this gap, we investigated the physiological conditions of MI that would create intramyocardial hemorrhage in rats so that a reliable model of hemorrhagic MI would become available for basic research.

The effects of the PID, IPD, and CIPD controllers based on the RBF neural network are compared, and they are also compared based on the traditional particle swarm optimization (PSO). The results show that the thickness, spread angle, and rotation speed of the elastic foil have great impacts on the bearing system. The proposed CIPD bearing control method based on RBF neural network has the shortest response time and the best control effect. The controller parameter tuning optimization starts to converge after one generation, which is the fastest iteration. It proves that RBF neural network control based on deep learning has high feasibility in hybrid bearing system. Intramyocardial hemorrhage following reperfusion is strongly associated with major adverse cardiovascular events in myocardial infarction (MI) patients; yet the mechanisms contributing to these outcomes are not well understood. Large animal models have been used to investigate intramyocardial hemorrhage, but they are exorbitantly expensive and difficult to use for mechanistic studies. In contrast, rat models are widely used to investigate mechanistic aspects of cardiovascular physiology, but a rat model that consistently recapitulates the characteristics of an hemorrhagic MI does not exist. To bridge this gap, we investigated the physiological conditions of MI that would create intramyocardial hemorrhage in rats so that a reliable model of hemorrhagic MI would become available for basic research. The controllers and hybrid bearing system are controlled based on the RBF neural network based on deep learning. The characteristics of the hybrid bearing system are explored at the end of this study, and the control simulation research is developed based on the Simulink simulation platform. The effects of the PID, IPD, and CIPD controllers based on the RBF neural network are compared, and they are also compared based on the traditional particle swarm optimization (PSO). The results show that the thickness, spread angle, and rotation speed of the elastic foil have great impacts on the bearing system. The proposed CIPD bearing control method based on RBF neural network has the shortest response time and the best control effect.   • The purpose of this study was to investigate the influence of substrates (quartz sand and coke) on the removal of pollutants (COD, NH4+-N and TP), electrochemical characteristics and microbial communities of vertical flow constructed wetlands (VFCW) under high pollutant loads. During operation, the removal rates of COD, NH4+-N and TP by VFCW-C (coke as substrate) were higher than that of VFCW-Q (quartz sand as substrate) by 9.73-19.41%, 5.03%-13.15% and 8.83%-14.58%, respectively. And the resistances of the VFCW-Q and VFCW-C were increased by 1228.9 Ω and 38.3 Ω, while their potentials were dropped from 182.4 mV to 377.9 mV-85.6 mV and 222.0 mV, respectively. Association between the self-organization of soil organisms, soil properties, and plant factors were explored through redundancy analyses (RDA). The results indicated that the biomass of soil microbes progressively increased in the dry season, from 0.75 g m-2 in CF to 1.75 g m-2 in BF. Microbial eco-exergy showed a similar pattern, while the community structure and the specific eco-exergy remained constant. Different trends for the seasons were observed for the soil fauna community, where the community biomass increased from 0.72 g m-2 to over 1.97 g m-2 in the dry season, but decreased from 3.94 g m-2 to 2.36 g m-2 in the wet season. Faunal eco-exergies followed a similar pattern. Consequently, the average annual biomass of the soil faunal community remained constant (2.17-2.39 g m-2) along the forest succession sequence, while the significant seasonal differences in both faunal biomass and eco-exergy observed at the early successional stage (CF) were insignificant in the middle and late forest successional stages (MF and BF). Risk was estimated using calculated values by considering four different dose-response (D-R) scenarios with known characteristics due to current lack of availability of D-R for AR bacteria. f-values ranged between 0.14 and 0.59 and the order of calculated theoretical values of maximum AR E. coli are as follows ampicillin or amoxicillin (38 CFU/dip) > co-trimoxazole (19 CFU/dip) ~ tetracycline (18 CFU/dip) > ceftriaxone or cefotaxime or ceftazidime (10 CFU/dip) ~ ciprofloxacin or ofloxacin (9 CFU/dip). From a pathophysiological perspective, atherosclerosis is characterized by microscopic inflammation and microcalcification that precede the characteristic plaque buildup in arterial walls detected by traditional assessment methods, including anatomic imaging modalities.     Physiological rhythms in mammals are essential for maintaining health, whereas disruptions may cause or exacerbate disease pathogenesis. As such, our objective was to characterize how cigarette smoke exposure affects physiological rhythms of otherwise healthy **** using telemetry and cosinor analysis.

    Female BALB/c **** were implanted with telemetry devices to measure body temperature, heart rate, systolic blood pressure (SBP), and activity. Following baseline measurements, **** were exposed to cigarette smoke for approximately 50 min twice daily during weekdays over 24 weeks. Physiological parameters were recorded after 1, 4, 8, and 24 weeks of exposure or after 4 weeks cessation following 4 weeks of cigarette smoke exposure.

    Acute cigarette smoke exposure resulted in anapyrexia, and bradycardia, with divergent effects on SBP. Long term, cigarette smoke exposure disrupted physiological rhythms after just 1 week, which persisted across 24 weeks of exposure (as shown by mixed effects on mesor, amplitude, acrophase, and goodness-of-fit using cosinor analysis). Our previous studies have highlighted several signaling networks associated with VSMC autophagy, but the underlying mechanisms remain poorly understood. Thereafter, the current study was performed to characterize the functional relevance of O-linked N-acetylglucosamine (GlcNAc) transferase (OGT) in high phosphate-induced VC in CKD settings. We generated VC models in 5/6 nephrectomized rats in vivo and VSMC calcification models in vitro. Artificial modulation of OGT (knockdown and overexpression) was performed to explore the role of OGT in VSMC autophagy and VC in thoracic aorta, and in vivo experiments were used to substantiate in vitro findings. Mechanistically, co-immunoprecipitation (Co-IP) assay was performed to examine interaction between OGT and kelch like ECH associated protein 1 (KEAP1), and in vivo ubiquitination assay was performed to examine ubiquitination extent of nuclear factor erythroid 2-related factor 2 (NRF2). OGT was highly expressed in high phosphate-induced 5/6 nephrectomized rats and VSMCs. OGT silencing was shown to suppress high phosphate-induced calcification of VSMCs. OGT enhances KEAP1 glycosylation and thereby results in degradation and ubiquitination of NRF2, concurrently inhibiting VSMC autophagy to promote VSMC calcification in 5/6 nephrectomized rats. Our characterization of the pathophysiology of cigarette smoke exposure on physiological rhythms of mice suggests that rhythm disruption may precede and contribute to disease pathogenesis. We generated VC models in 5/6 nephrectomized rats in vivo and VSMC calcification models in vitro. Artificial modulation of OGT (knockdown and overexpression) was performed to explore the role of OGT in VSMC autophagy and VC in thoracic aorta, and in vivo experiments were used to substantiate in vitro findings. Mechanistically, co-immunoprecipitation (Co-IP) assay was performed to examine interaction between OGT and kelch like ECH associated protein 1 (KEAP1), and in vivo ubiquitination assay was performed to examine ubiquitination extent of nuclear factor erythroid 2-related factor 2 (NRF2). OGT was highly expressed in high phosphate-induced 5/6 nephrectomized rats and VSMCs. OGT silencing was shown to suppress high phosphate-induced calcification of VSMCs. OGT enhances KEAP1 glycosylation and thereby results in degradation and ubiquitination of NRF2, concurrently inhibiting VSMC autophagy to promote VSMC calcification in 5/6 nephrectomized rats.     In December 2019, the COVID-19 outbreak began in China and quickly spread throughout the world and was reclassified as a pandemic in March 2020. The first case of COVID-19 was declared in Togo on March 5. Two months later, few data were available to describe the circulation of the new coronavirus in the country.

    This survey aimed to estimate the prevalence of SARS-CoV-2 in high-risk populations in Lomé.

    From April 23, 2020, to May 8, 2020, we recruited a sample of participants from five sectors health care, air transport, police, road transport and informal. We collected oropharyngeal swabs for direct detection through real-time reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (rRT-PCR) and blood for antibody detection by serological tests. The overall prevalence (current and past) of infection was defined by positivity for both tests.

    A total of 955 participants with a median age of 36 (IQR 32-43) were included, and 71.6% (n = 684) were men. Approximately 22.1% (n = 212) were from the air transport sector, 20.5% (n = 196) were from the police sector, and 38.7% (n = 370) were from the health sector. Seven participants (0.7%, 95% CI 0.3-1.6%) had a positive rRT-PCR test result at the time of recruitment, and nine (0.9%, 95% CI 0.4-1.8%) were seropositive for IgM or IgG against SARS-CoV-2. We found an overall prevalence of 1.6% (n = 15), 95% CI 0.9-2.6%.

Udenafil (20 mg/kg, daily for 4 weeks) was administered in group 3.   • This study explores the lived experiences of carers of people with Multiple Sclerosis (MS), specifically in relation to their quality of life (QoL), through the use of images and narratives, with the aim of gaining a nuanced insight into the complex nature of QoL in the MS caregiving context.

    Twelve MS carers (aged 30-73years) took photographs of objects/places/events that represented enhancement or compromise to their QoL and composed written narratives for each photograph based on their experiences of caregiving. In total, 126 photographs and their corresponding narratives were analysed using content analysis.

    Simulation-based training in medical education has become a common method to develop both technical and non-technical skills in teams. Mental rehearsal (MR) is the cognitive act of simulating a task in our heads to pre-experience tasks imaginatively. It has been used widely to improve individual and collective performance in fields outside healthcare, and offers potential for more efficient training in time-pressured surgical and medical team contexts. This study aimed to review the available literature to determine the impact of MR on team performance and non-technical skills in healthcare.

    MEDLINE, Embase, British Educational Index, CINAHL, Web of Science, PsycInfo and Cochrane databases were searched for the period 1994-2018. The primary outcome measure was improvement in team performance and non-technical skills. Study quality of RCTs was assessed using the Medical Education Research Quality Instrument. The reported impacts of MR in all included studies were mapped on to the Kirkpatrick framework for on-technical skills are less clear. Future research should look at longitudinal mixed-method evaluation designs and focus on real clinical teams.
    Coronavirus 2019 (COVID-19) disease has rapidly spread worldwide with a multitude effects on daily life. Since the transmission risk increases with close contact, some cosmetic procedures are considered high risk and majority of them had to be postponed or canceled in private dermatocosmetology clinics especially during the heavy period of the outbreak.

    We aimed to document the medical and socioeconomic problems emerged in dermatocosmetology clinics in Turkey caused by COVID-19 pandemic and to discuss the management strategies taken by dermatologists.

    This survey research was conducted with 100 dermatologists who work in private dermatocosmetology clinics. The survey included 38 questions about office re-arrangements including patient admission and office environment, safety precautions taken for cosmetic procedures, management of clinic staff, and financial impact of the pandemic.

    A remarkable decrease in major cosmetic interest was reported in private clinics; meanwhile, there was an increase in applicants for noncosmetic dermatological complaints. The most avoided cosmetic procedures were application of skin care devices, lasers, chemical peeling, and thread lifting, while botulinum toxin injection was the most performed procedure. Nearly half of the participants had severe financial damage. Of the participants, 55% reported that they worked anxiously during this period and 60% believed that they managed the early period of the pandemic successfully.

Commonly used methods that aim to directly correlate histology and MRI data generally fall short of this goal due to spatial errors that preclude direct matching. Errors result from tissue deformation, differences in spatial resolution and slice thickness, non-coplanar and/or nonintersecting plane orientations, and different image contrast mechanisms. Some of these problems arise from limitations in standard protocols for clinical tissue processing and histology-based pathology reporting, and to some extent can be addressed by modifications to standard protocols without compromising the clinical process. Typical modifications include ex vivo specimen MRI, block-face photography, addition of fiducial markers, and 3D printed molds to constrain tissue deformation and guide sectioning. This review summarizes the advantages and limitations of MRI validation techniques based on coregistration of MRI with whole-mount histology of tissue specimens.
