Aim The effect of applied magnetic field duration and intensity on the delivery of β-glucosidase-loaded magnetic nanoparticles was evaluated. Materials & methods The prepared β-glucosidase-loaded magnetic nanoparticles were targeted to subcutaneous tumors with an external magnetic field. Iron concentration and enzyme activity in tumor tissue were analyzed via electron spin resonance detection, Prussian blue staining and enzyme activity measurement. Results The increase in magnetic nanoparticles quantity and enzyme activity in tumor tissue was not synchronous with the magnetic targeting duration. In addition, accumulation of magnetic nanoparticles and the increase in enzyme activity were not synchronous with the magnetic field intensity. Conclusion The results suggested that appropriate magnetic field conditions should be considered for targeted delivery of bioactivity proteins based on magnetic nanoparticles.Low molecular weight algal organic matter (AOM), as a frequent water contaminant with poor coagulation efficiency, adversely affects the quality of produced water and serves as a source of potentially carcinogenic disinfection by-products. AOM removal from water is inevitable to eliminate the negative health and environmental impacts. This research evaluates the removal of arginine, phenylalanine and aspartic acid, which are amino acids abundant in AOM. Adsorption experiments were performed at 10, 18 and 25 °C and pH 5, 7 and 9 using two different activated carbons (FTL, PIC). Amino acids showed endothermic adsorption behaviour, with a higher removal at higher temperature. Higher temperature increased the diffusion of amino acid molecules, reduced the solution viscosity, or enhanced the hydrophobic interactions contributing to adsorption. The effect of temperature manifested differently during experiments depending on the chemical nature of the amino acids, the pH value and the surface properties of the carbon. We found that the methods reported in our survey had little consistency they classified between 18% and 81% of NSDC hearts with cardiomegaly. Therefore, we obtained biometric and postmortem data from a reference population of 3398 decedents aged less then 40 years. The reference population was ethnically diverse and had no known cardiac pathology on autopsy or histology. We derived and validated a multivariable regression model to predict normal heart weights and a threshold for cardiomegaly (upper 95% CI limit) in the young reference population (the Chicago model). Using the new model, the prevalence of cardiomegaly in hearts from the NSDC was 19%. Conclusions Medical examiner offices use a variety of tools to classify cardiomegaly. These approaches produce inconsistent results, and many overinterpret cardiomegaly. We recommend the model proposed to classify postmortem cardiomegaly in cases of sudden cardiac death in young people.Past research has shown that a significant proportion of college students will experience a victimization during their college tenure. This body of research provides evidence that college students' lifestyle characteristics and routine activities play a role in influencing their risk of victimization; yet, little is known about whether these same risk factors predict both single-type victimization and poly-victimization. Using a sample of more than 4,000 college women from across the United States, multivariate analyses were used to examine the risk factors for poly-victimization. Measures from both target congruence theory and lifestyles-routine activities theory were found to significantly differentiate single-type victims from poly-victims.Background consumers of dietary supplements (DS) or vitamin-mineral supplements (VMS) have a better health profile than nonconsumers; whether this also applies to healthier dietary patterns has seldom been assessed. We aimed to assess the dietary intake of subjects according to their consumption of DS or VMS. Nutrients, consumption of specific food groups, dietary scores, and compliance with the Swiss nutritional guidelines were compared between VMS/DS consumers and nonconsumers. Results In 2009-2012, after multivariable adjustment for gender, age, body mass index, education, smoking, country of birth, sedentariness, diet and total energy intake, VMS/DS consumers had a higher score for the "Fruits & vegetables"(-0.09 ± 0.02 vs. 0.15 ± 0.05) dietary pattern and a lower score for the "Fatty & sugary" dietary pattern (0.02 ± 0.02 vs. -0.14 ± 0.04) and had a lower likelihood to comply with the guideline on total fat [odds ratio and 95 %CI 0.72 (0.57-0.89)] than nonconsumers. In 2014-2017, after multivariable adjustment, no differences (at p less then 0.005) were found between VMS/DS consumers and nonconsumers. Conclusion VMS/DS consumers tend to have healthier dietary choices than nonconsumers. The beneficial effect of VMS and/or DS consumption is decreased, as it does not target subjects who really need them.

(1) Background Few studies have examined the relationship between neighborhood socioeconomic deprivation (SED) and weight-related outcomes in youth, controlling for weight-related behaviors. Hence, the purpose of this study was to examine the association between neighborhood SED, weight status, and fat mass in a diverse sample of youth, before and after controlling for physical activity and diet. (2) Methods The sample included 828 youth from the Transitions and Activity Changes in Kids study. Neighborhood SED was expressed as an index score at the census tract of residence. Height, weight, and body composition were measured and used to calculate fat mass index (FMI) and weight status. Moderate-to-vigorous physical activity (MVPA) and sedentary behavior (min/h) were measured via accelerometry. Diet quality was assessed via the Block Food Screener for Kids. Multilevel regression models were employed to examine these relationships. (3) Results Neighborhood SED was significantly associated with FMI and weight status before and after controlling for MVPA, sedentary behavior, and diet. Notably, youth residing in the most deprived neighborhoods had significantly higher FMI and were 30% more likely to be overweight/obese (OR = 1.30; 95% CI = 1.03-1.65). (4) Conclusions Greater neighborhood SED was consistently and significantly associated with higher fat mass index and increased likelihood of overweight/obesity among youth.It is estimated that the genus Synechococcus is responsible for about 17% of net primary production in the Global Ocean. Blooms of these organisms are observed in tropical, subtropical and even temperate zones, and they have been recorded recently even beyond the polar circle. The long-term scenarios forecast a growing expansion of Synechococcus sp. and its area of dominance. This is, among others, due to their high physiological plasticity in relation to changing environmental conditions. Three phenotypes of the genus Synechococcus sp. (Type 1, Type 2, and Type 3a) were tested in controlled laboratory conditions in order to identify their response to various irradiance (10, 55, 100 and 145 µmol photons m-2 s-1) and temperature (15, 22.5 and 30 °C) conditions. The highest total pigment content per cell was recorded at 10 μmol photons m-2 s-1 at all temperature variants with the clear dominance of phycobilins among all the pigments. In almost every variant the highest growth rate was recorded for the Type 1. The lowest growth rates were observed, in general, for the Type 3a. However, it was recognized to be less temperature sensitive in comparison to the other two types and rather light-driven with the highest plasticity and adaptation potential. The highest amounts of carotenoids were produced by Type 2 which also showed signs of the cell stress even around 55 μmol photons m-2 s-1 at 15 °C and 22.5 °C. This may imply that the Type 2 is the most susceptible to higher irradiances. Picocyanobacteria Synechococcus sp. require less light intensity to achieve the maximum rate of photosynthesis than larger algae. They also tolerate a wide range of temperatures which combined together make them gain a powerful competitive advantage. Our results will provide key information for the ecohydrodynamical model development. As the calcium nitrite content increased, the generation rate and generated amount of nitrite-based hydration products also increased, owing to the rapid reaction between NO2- ions in calcium nitrite and C3A(Al2O3). Further, the reaction with C3S and C2S was accelerated, thereby increasing the generation rates of Ca(OH)2 and C-S-H. The sample included 688 adolescents (15-18 years of age; 322 females) who were tested on two occasions in January 2020 (baseline; before the COVID-19 pandemic) and in April 2020 (follow-up; during the COVID-19 pandemic lockdown). Variables included PAL (measured by the Physical Activity Questionnaire for Adolescents-PAQ-A) as well as sociodemographic-, parental-, and familial factors. A significant decline in PALs was recorded between baseline and follow-up (t-test 11.88, p less then 0.001). Approximately 50% of adolescents underwent sufficient PAL at baseline, while only 24% of them were achieving sufficient PAL at the time of follow-up measurement. Paternal education was positively correlated (OR (95%CI) baseline 6.63 (4.58-9.96), follow-up 3.33 (1.19-7.01)), while familial conflict was negatively correlated (baseline 0.72 (0.57-0.90), follow-up 0.77 (0.60-0.99)) with PALs before and during the pandemic. This study highlights the importance of the parent-child relationship and parental/familiar support in promoting physical activity both during regular life and during crises and health challenging situations like the COVID-19 pandemic.Schizophrenia is a complex mental disorder whose course varies with periods of deterioration and symptomatic improvement without diagnosis and treatment specific for the disease. So far, it has not been possible to clearly define what kinds of functional and structural changes are responsible for the onset or recurrence of acute psychotic decompensation in the course of schizophrenia, and to what extent personality disorders may precede the appearance of the appropriate symptoms. The work combines magnetic resonance spectroscopy imaging with clinical evaluation and laboratory tests to determine the likely pathway of schizophrenia development by identifying peripheral cerebral biomarkers compared to personality disorders. The relationship between the level of metabolites in the brain, the clinical status of patients according to International Statistical Classification of Diseases and Related Health Problems, 10th Revision ICD-10, duration of untreated psychosis (DUP), and biochemical indices related to redox balance (malondialdehyde), the efficiency of antioxidant systems (FRAP), and bioenergetic metabolism of mitochondria, were investigated.

These findings suggest that an unintended condition is created to favor the growth of Gram-positive bacteria in QQ MBRs, resulting in a distinct microbial social network in both bulk sludge and biocake. The present study explores the rapid chlopyrifos (CPs) biodegradation potential of plant growth promoting (PGP) psychrophilic bacteria isolated from brackish water by enrichment culture technique. Based on biochemical tests and 16 S rDNA sequencing the isolate was identified as Shewanella sp. The isolate Shewanella BT05 showed significant growth rate in various concentrations of (10-50 mg/L) CPs. The isolate produced plant growth promoting factors, IAA (20.8 ± 1.2 and 15.4 ± 1.0 μg/mL) and siderophores (60.67 ± 1.2 and 57.5 ± 0.9%) in the absence and presence of CPs. Further, the isolate BT05 solublized phosphate (16.5 ± 1.0 and 12.0 ± 1.0 mm in size respectively), and produce hydrogen cyanide (excellent and moderate) in the presence and absence of CPs. The isolate BT05 degraded 94.3, 91.8, 87.9, 82.6, and 80.5% of CPs at 10, 20, 30, 40, and 50 mg/L, respectively, within 24 h. Further, the media conditions were optimized for enhanced CPs removal and observed 93% removal in the presence of 3.5% glucose in pH 7.0 at 32.5 °C. Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy and high-performance liquid chromatography results indicated the role for Shewanella BT05 in the biomineralization of CPs. The results suggested the isolate BT05 could be used for CPs removal as well as PGP activity in contaminated soil. A novel, ex-situ remediation process for perchlorate contaminated soil is reported in this study. This approach comprises washing the contaminated soil with water, followed by treatment of the wash water in a bioreactor. The treated water reused for the next batch of soil, and the cycle continued. The pilot-scale treatment unit comprising of a soil washing unit (0.75 m3) and a fixed-film bioreactor (140 L), both connected in series for continuous operation for a period of three months. Nevertheless, neither parameter explained the observed synergistic effect on mortality. Finally, we observed a significant loss of whole body Na+ in fish which died during the metal exposure compared to surviving fish, irrespective of exposure conditions. Such an effect was not observed for other major cations (K+, Ca2+ and Mg2+). This observation suggests that, under the applied exposure conditions, survival was correlated to the capacity of the organism to maintain Na+ homeostasis. The removal of the analgesic tramadol (TMD) from water was studied by electro-Fenton (EF) process using BDD anode. Hydroxyl radicals (OH) generated in this process are very strong oxidants and able to successfully oxidize TMD until its total mineralization in aqueous solution. The oxidative degradation of TMD was very rapid with complete disappearance of 0.1 mM (26.3 mg L-1) TMD in 10 min at 500 mA constant current electrolysis. The absolute (second order) rate constant for oxidation of TMD by OH was determined using competition kinetic method and found to be (5.59 ± 0.03) ✕ 109 M-1 s-1. The quasi-complete mineralization of the 0.1 mM TMD solution was obtained in 6 h electrolysis at 500 mA current. Several oxidation reaction intermediates were identified using GC-MS analysis. The major emphasis is on phytodegradation (phytotransformation) and rhizodegradation since these mechanisms are the most favourable alternatives for soil and water reclamation of hydrocarbons using tropical plants. In addressing these issues, this review also covers challenges to retrieve the environment (soil and water) from petroleum contaminations through phytoremediation, and its opportunities to remove or reduce the negative environmental impacts of petroleum contaminations and restore damaged ecosystems with sustainable ways to keep healthy life for the future.
These findings suggest that an unintended condition is created to favor the growth of Gram-positive bacteria in QQ MBRs, resulting in a distinct microbial social network in both bulk sludge and biocake. The present study explores the rapid chlopyrifos (CPs) biodegradation potential of plant growth promoting (PGP) psychrophilic bacteria isolated from brackish water by enrichment culture technique. Based on biochemical tests and 16 S rDNA sequencing the isolate was identified as Shewanella sp. The isolate Shewanella BT05 showed significant growth rate in various concentrations of (10-50 mg/L) CPs. The isolate produced plant growth promoting factors, IAA (20.8 ± 1.2 and 15.4 ± 1.0 μg/mL) and siderophores (60.67 ± 1.2 and 57.5 ± 0.9%) in the absence and presence of CPs. Further, the isolate BT05 solublized phosphate (16.5 ± 1.0 and 12.0 ± 1.0 mm in size respectively), and produce hydrogen cyanide (excellent and moderate) in the presence and absence of CPs. The isolate BT05 degraded 94.3, 91.8, 87.9, 82.6, and 80.5% of CPs at 10, 20, 30, 40, and 50 mg/L, respectively, within 24 h. Further, the media conditions were optimized for enhanced CPs removal and observed 93% removal in the presence of 3.5% glucose in pH 7.0 at 32.5 °C. Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy and high-performance liquid chromatography results indicated the role for Shewanella BT05 in the biomineralization of CPs. The results suggested the isolate BT05 could be used for CPs removal as well as PGP activity in contaminated soil. A novel, ex-situ remediation process for perchlorate contaminated soil is reported in this study. This approach comprises washing the contaminated soil with water, followed by treatment of the wash water in a bioreactor. The treated water reused for the next batch of soil, and the cycle continued. Oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) is the most devastating neoplasm with dramatic increase in morbidity and mortality. The detection and prognostic evaluation of precancerous lesions could aid in early control of cancer. Heat shock protein (HSP) 27 has found to be a biomarker and therapeutic target in different types of cancer.
This study aims to investigate the role of HSP 27 as prognostic molecular indicator of malignant transformation in oral epithelial dysplasias.

Modern light microscopes are available with built-in illuminator and facility of photomicrography. This enables the microscopy to be ready for telemedicine. However, resource-limited settings still find difficulty in procuring those microscopes.
The aim of this study was to upgrade a light microscope to a smartphone-connected digital microscope with minimal cost to make it ready for telemedicine.
A commercially available (price ₹389) Universal Serial Bus (USB) web camera was set on the eyepiece and fixed with the help of an aluminum sheet. Light emitting diodes (LEDs), covered with an optical diffuser, were set below the condenser. The camera was connected to an Android smartphone with an application for capturing image and video. Sixteen faculty members provided their opinion about the new device.
The smartphone-connected microscope was successfully used to focus and capture image and video of various slides. The images and videos were stored in the smartphone and shared via E-mail and other channels (e.g., WhatsApp and Telegram). This camera was also successfully connected to a laptop for projecting the real-time microscopic field on a screen. According to faculty members, focusing an object and capturing the image are the best features of the device; however, development of the device received lowest score.

Here, we experimentally mapped the allosteric network in a PDZligand complex, both in isolation and in the context of a supramodular structure, and show that allosteric networks in a PDZ domain are highly dependent on the supertertiary structure in which they are present. This striking sensitivity of allosteric networks to the presence of adjacent protein domains is likely a common property of supertertiary structures in proteins. RVF is of global concern, having expanded its geographical range over the last decades. The impact of control measures on epidemic dynamics using empirical data has not been assessed. Here, we fitted a mathematical model to seroprevalence livestock and human RVF case data from the 2018-2019 epidemic in Mayotte to estimate viral transmission among livestock, and spillover from livestock to humans through both direct contact and vector-mediated routes. Model simulations were used to assess the impact of vaccination on reducing the epidemic size. The rate of spillover by direct contact was about twice as high as vector transmission. Assuming 30% of the population were farmers, each transmission route contributed to 45% and 55% of the number of human infections, respectively. Reactive vaccination immunizing 20% of the livestock population reduced the number of human cases by 30%. Vaccinating 1 mo later required using 50% more vaccine doses for a similar reduction. Vaccinating only farmers required 10 times as more vaccine doses for a similar reduction in human cases. Finally, with 52.0% (95% credible interval [CrI] [42.9-59.4]) of livestock immune at the end of the epidemic wave, viral reemergence in the next rainy season (2019-2020) is unlikely. Coordinated human and animal health surveillance, and timely livestock vaccination appear to be key to controlling RVF in this setting. Unsurprisingly, due to this species' close association with man-made habitats, our maps predict a high probability of presence within many urban cities across Africa where our estimates suggest that over 126 million people reside.

Here, we experimentally mapped the allosteric network in a PDZligand complex, both in isolation and in the context of a supramodular structure, and show that allosteric networks in a PDZ domain are highly dependent on the supertertiary structure in which they are present. This striking sensitivity of allosteric networks to the presence of adjacent protein domains is likely a common property of supertertiary structures in proteins. Our findings have general implications for prediction of allosteric networks from primary and tertiary structures and for quantitative descriptions of allostery.Rift Valley fever (RVF) is an emerging, zoonotic, arboviral hemorrhagic fever threatening livestock and humans mainly in Africa. RVF is of global concern, having expanded its geographical range over the last decades. The impact of control measures on epidemic dynamics using empirical data has not been assessed. Here, we fitted a mathematical model to seroprevalence livestock and human RVF case data from the 2018-2019 epidemic in Mayotte to estimate viral transmission among livestock, and spillover from livestock to humans through both direct contact and vector-mediated routes. Model simulations were used to assess the impact of vaccination on reducing the epidemic size. The rate of spillover by direct contact was about twice as high as vector transmission. Assuming 30% of the population were farmers, each transmission route contributed to 45% and 55% of the number of human infections, respectively. Reactive vaccination immunizing 20% of the livestock population reduced the number of human cases by 30%. Vaccinating 1 mo later required using 50% more vaccine doses for a similar reduction. Vaccinating only farmers required 10 times as more vaccine doses for a similar reduction in human cases. Finally, with 52.0% (95% credible interval [CrI] [42.9-59.4]) of livestock immune at the end of the epidemic wave, viral reemergence in the next rainy season (2019-2020) is unlikely. Coordinated human and animal health surveillance, and timely livestock vaccination appear to be key to controlling RVF in this setting. There was no difference in outcomes between patients using biologics and those who were not. Our hypothesis that patients taking biologics are more satisfied after surgery could not be proven. Hand appearance and ulnar drift are the most important determinants of satisfaction after reconstruction of MCP deformity.

HFD-induced atherosclerosis was established in apoliprotein E-deficient (ApoE
) ****. **** by daily intragastric gavage with Raloxifene or vehicle as controls were provided. The human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVEC), Rat VSMC and RAW264.7 cell lines were used to evaluate the effect of Raloxifene in vitro.
We demonstrated that Raloxifene was effective in ameliorating HFD- induced atherosclerosis plaque burden and size. Histological analysis showed that the expression of IL-6, P-STAT3, ICAM-1, VCAM-1, CD68 and α-SMA were significantly decreased in the Raloxifene intervention group compared to HFD group. Moreover, we observed that IL-6 increased migration and cell viability of VSMCs and RAW264.7 cells, while Raloxifene treatment decreased migration and reduced cell viability of VSMCs and RAW264.7 cells stimulated by IL-6. Furthermore, this effect was related to blocking IL-6/STAT3 pathway.

B-cell lymphoma 2 (Bcl-2), Bcl-2 associated X protein (Bax), cysteinyl aspartate specific proteinase-3 (Caspase-3), Notch homolog 1 (NOTCH1), and Neuregulin 1 (NRG1) expression was assayed using western blot and qRT-PCR. Cardiac changes were assayed using echocardiography, CT, HE staining, and Masson's trichrome staining. TUNEL staining and flow cytometry were used to detect cell apoptosis. NOTCH1 inhibitor (DAPT) was used to explore the mechanism of ranolazine.
Compared with the DCM group, the ranolazine groups had no obvious weight loss and significantly decreased blood glucose levels. Ranolazine prevented diabetes-caused cardiac injury. Ranolazine also decreased the number of apoptotic cells and altered the expression of apoptosis-related mRNAs and proteins. Ranolazine-induced NOTCH1 activated NRG1 and inhibited the downstream apoptosis-related pathway, while DAPT partially inhibited ranolazine-induced NOTCH1 and NRG1 expression.

Autophagy is an intracellular digestion system that work as an inducible adaptive response to lung injury which is a resultant of exposure to various stress agents like hypoxia, ischemia-reperfusion and xenobiotics which may be manifested as acute lung injury (ALI), acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS), chronic lung injury (CLI), bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD), chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), asthma, ventilator-induced lung injury (VILI), ventilator-associated lung injury (VALI), pulmonary fibrosis (PF), cystic fibrosis (CF) and radiation-induced lung injury (RILI). Numerous regulators like LC3B-II, Beclin 1, p62, HIF1/BNIP3 and mTOR play pivotal role in autophagy induction during lung injury possibly for progression/inhibition of the disease state. The present review focuses on the critical autophagic mediators and their potential cross talk with the lung injury pathophysiology thereby bringing to limelight the possible therapeutic interventions.The hippocampus-prefrontal cortex circuit plays a major role in stress and in the neurobiology of depression and its treatment. Disruption of this circuit by lesioning the thalamic nucleus reuniens (RE) has been shown to prevent the detrimental effects of chronic mild stress on prefrontal cortex neuroplasticity indices in male rats. However, it remains unknown whether hippocampal neurostructural response to stress is modified by RE lesion. In the present study, adult male rats were subjected to the chronic mild stress model of depression and were treated with either vehicle or an antidepressant (i.e. sertraline). Moreover, a group of animals was subjected to RE lesion before stress exposure with or without sertraline treatment. We demonstrated that chronic mild stress induced hippocampal CA1 dendritic atrophy and this was prevented by pre-stress RE lesion to the same extent that antidepressant treatment reversed it. The present findings highlight the importance of hippocampal-prefrontal cortex communication in chronic stress effects on hippocampal neuroplasticity and contribute to the elucidation of the role of RE in neurostructural changes underlying stress-driven depression and its treatment.

It is suggested that government should disclose and share information to the public timely and pay more attention to the core value of order in crisis management.Presently, there are no approved drugs or vaccines to treat COVID-19, which has spread to over 200 countries and at the time of writing was responsible for over 650,000 deaths worldwide. Recent studies have shown that two human proteases, TMPRSS2 and cathepsin L, play a key role in host cell entry of SARS-CoV-2. Importantly, inhibitors of these proteases were shown to block SARS-CoV-2 infection. Here, we perform virtual screening of 14,011 phytochemicals produced by Indian medicinal plants to identify natural product inhibitors of TMPRSS2 and cathepsin L. AutoDock Vina was used to perform molecular docking of phytochemicals against TMPRSS2 and cathepsin L. Potential phytochemical inhibitors were filtered by comparing their docked binding energies with those of known inhibitors of TMPRSS2 and cathepsin L. Further, the ligand binding site residues and non-covalent interactions between protein and ligand were used as an additional filter to identify phytochemical inhibitors that either bind to or form interactions with residues important for the specificity of the target proteases. This led to the identification of 96 inhibitors of TMPRSS2 and 9 inhibitors of cathepsin L among phytochemicals of Indian medicinal plants. Further, we have performed molecular dynamics (MD) simulations to analyze the stability of the protein-ligand complexes for the three top inhibitors of TMPRSS2 namely, qingdainone, edgeworoside C and adlumidine, and of cathepsin L namely, ararobinol, (+)-oxoturkiyenine and 3α,17α-cinchophylline. Interestingly, several herbal sources of identified phytochemical inhibitors have antiviral or anti-inflammatory use in traditional medicine. Further in vitro and in vivo testing is needed before clinical trials of the promising phytochemical inhibitors identified here.In our previous study, we demonstrated that cyanidin-3-O-glucoside (C3G)-rich haskap (Lonicera caerulea L.) berry extracts can attenuate the carcinogen-induced DNA damage in normal lung epithelial cells in vitro. Here, the efficacy of lyophilized powder of whole haskap berry (C3G-HB) in lowering tobacco-specific nitrosamine, 4-(methylnitrosamino)-1-(3-pyridyl)-1-butanone, (NNK)-induced lung tumorigenesis in A/JCr **** was investigated. Three weeks after daily oral administration of C3G-HB (6 mg of C3G in 0.2 g of C3G-HB/mouse/day), lung tumors were initiated by a single intraperitoneal injection of NNK. Dietary C3G-HB supplementation was continued, and 22 weeks later, **** were euthanized. Lung tumors were visualized through positron emission tomography (PET) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) 19 weeks after NNK injection. Dietary supplementation of C3G-HB significantly reduced the NNK-induced lung tumor multiplicity and tumor area but did not affect tumor incidence. Immunohistochemical analysis showed reduced expression of proliferative cell nuclear antigen (PCNA) and Ki-67 in lung tissues. A descriptive phenomenological approach was used to collect and analyze the interview data from 15 older persons (5 males, 10 females) living alone in Seoul, South Korea. Four main themes emerged from the data analysis fear of being alone, concern about having an aged body, apprehension mixed with depression and loneliness, and fear of economic difficulties. These findings indicate that older persons living alone should receive continuous attention to prevent them from being neglected and their anxiety from worsening. Above all, it is vital to ensure comprehensive support for older persons living alone to alleviate their anxiety.

Here, we perform virtual screening of 14,011 phytochemicals produced by Indian medicinal plants to identify natural product inhibitors of TMPRSS2 and cathepsin L. AutoDock Vina was used to perform molecular docking of phytochemicals against TMPRSS2 and cathepsin L. Potential phytochemical inhibitors were filtered by comparing their docked binding energies with those of known inhibitors of TMPRSS2 and cathepsin L. Further, the ligand binding site residues and non-covalent interactions between protein and ligand were used as an additional filter to identify phytochemical inhibitors that either bind to or form interactions with residues important for the specificity of the target proteases. This led to the identification of 96 inhibitors of TMPRSS2 and 9 inhibitors of cathepsin L among phytochemicals of Indian medicinal plants. Further, we have performed molecular dynamics (MD) simulations to analyze the stability of the protein-ligand complexes for the three top inhibitors of TMPRSS2 namely, qingdainone, edgeworoside C and adlumidine, and of cathepsin L namely, ararobinol, (+)-oxoturkiyenine and 3α,17α-cinchophylline. Interestingly, several herbal sources of identified phytochemical inhibitors have antiviral or anti-inflammatory use in traditional medicine. Further in vitro and in vivo testing is needed before clinical trials of the promising phytochemical inhibitors identified here.In our previous study, we demonstrated that cyanidin-3-O-glucoside (C3G)-rich haskap (Lonicera caerulea L.) berry extracts can attenuate the carcinogen-induced DNA damage in normal lung epithelial cells in vitro. Here, the efficacy of lyophilized powder of whole haskap berry (C3G-HB) in lowering tobacco-specific nitrosamine, 4-(methylnitrosamino)-1-(3-pyridyl)-1-butanone, (NNK)-induced lung tumorigenesis in A/JCr mice was investigated. Three weeks after daily oral administration of C3G-HB (6 mg of C3G in 0.2 g of C3G-HB/mouse/day), lung tumors were initiated by a single intraperitoneal injection of NNK. Dietary C3G-HB supplementation was continued, and 22 weeks later, mice were euthanized. Lung tumors were visualized through positron emission tomography (PET) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) 19 weeks after NNK injection. Dietary supplementation of C3G-HB significantly reduced the NNK-induced lung tumor multiplicity and tumor area but did not affect tumor incidence. Immunohistochemical analysis showed reduced expression of proliferative cell nuclear antigen (PCNA) and Ki-67 in lung tissues. Four main themes emerged from the data analysis fear of being alone, concern about having an aged body, apprehension mixed with depression and loneliness, and fear of economic difficulties. These findings indicate that older persons living alone should receive continuous attention to prevent them from being neglected and their anxiety from worsening. The aim of the study was to characterize the epidemiology and treatment outcomes of head and neck (HN) osseous-site tumors.
Descriptive analyses and multivariate Cox regressions were performed to analyze the effect of surgery on overall survival (OS) utilizing the National Cancer Database (2004-2016).
Of 2449 tumors, surgery was utilized in 84.5% of cases. OS was worse in osteosarcoma (5-year OS 53.4% [SE 2.5%]) compared with cartilage tumors (5-year OS 84.6% [SE 1.8%]) (log-rank P < .001). Treatment regimens that included surgery were associated with improved OS on multivariate analysis (hazard ratio [HR] 0.495 [95% CI 0.366-0.670]). Positive margins were found in 40.8% of cases, and associated with decreased OS in osteosarcomas (HR 1.304 [0.697-2.438]).

Transcript data suggest possible adaptations for surviving in the nutrient-poor, lithified deep biosphere that include the recycling of organic matter. These active communities appear strongly influenced by the presence of cracks and veins in the rocks where fluids and resulting rock alteration create micro-niches.Transition metal oxides (TMOs) consist of a series of solid materials, exhibiting a wide variety of structures with tunability and versatile physicochemical properties. To determine the physicochemical stability of ziconotide solutions for intrathecal administration in the Medication Cassette Reservoir (MCR).
A stability indicating UPLC-DAD method was developed and validated according to the ICH guidelines. Two mixtures of ziconotide (0.40 μg/mL and 0.60 μg/mL) stored in MCR stored at 25 ± 2°C were evaluated for 14 days and compared to the initial observed concentrations.
The physicochemical stability of the two solutions was demonstrated for two days thanks to relative concentrations, pH measurement, visual inspections, and turbidity assays. A degradation product was observed and increased during the study.
This study showed a very low physicochemical stability of diluted ziconotide stored at 25 ± 2°C in the MCR. The intrathecal administration of ziconotide does not seem appropriate with this device for outpatients.

In patients who are HIV infected, hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection is an important co-morbidity. However, antiretroviral options for HIV/HBV co-infected children are limited and, at the time of this study, only included lamivudine. These children may remain on this regimen for many years until late adolescence. They are at high risk of developing HBV drug resistance and uncontrolled HBV disease. The aim of this study was to characterize HBV infection in HIV/HBV co-infected children. Known HIV-infected/HBsAg-positive children, previously exposed to lamivudine monotherapy against HBV, and their mothers were recruited at the Katutura Hospital paediatric HIV clinic in Windhoek, Namibia. Dried blood spot and serum samples were collected for HBV characterization and serological testing, respectively. Fifteen children and six mothers participated in the study. Eight of the 15 children (53.3%) tested HBV DNA positive; all eight children were on lamivudine-based ART. Lamivudine-associated resistance variants, together with immune escape mutants in the surface gene, were identified in all eight children. Resistance mutations included rtL80I, rtV173L, rtL180M, rtM204I/V and the overlapping sE164D, sW182*, sI195M and sW196LS variants. HBV strains belonged to genotypes E (6/8, 75%) and D3 (2/8, 25%). Further analysis of the HBV core promoter region revealed mutations associated with reduced expression of HBeAg protein and hepatocarcinogenesis. All six mothers, on HBV-active ART containing tenofovir and lamivudine, tested HBV DNA negative. This study confirms the importance of screening HIV-infected children for HBV and ensuring equity of drug access to effective HBV treatment if co-infected.
Spinal epidural abscess (SEA) is increasing in incidence; this not-to-miss diagnosis can cause significant morbidity and mortality, particularly if diagnoses are delayed. While some risk factors for SEA and subsequent mortality have been identified, the SEA patient population is clinically heterogeneous and sub-populations have not yet been characterized in the literature. The primary objective of this project was to identify characteristics of subgroups of patients with SEA. The secondary objective was to identify associations between subgroups and three clinical outcomes new onset paralysis, in-hospital mortality, and 180-day readmission.
Demographics and comorbid diagnoses were collected for patients diagnosed with SEA at an academic health center between 2015 and 2019. Latent class analysis was used to identify clinical subgroups. Chi-squared tests were used to compare identified subgroups with clinical outcomes.
We identified two subgroups of patients in our analysis. Group 1 had a high rate of medwho are younger, with substance use disorder diagnoses, may have longer hospital courses and are at higher risk of readmission within six months. Future research should explore how to best support patients in both groups, and additional implications for subgroup classification on health outcomes, including engagement in care.
Obesity is a crucial public health problem and is rising globally. This study was conducted to determine the prevalence of obesity and its associated factors among the elderly in Malaysia.
Data were obtained from the National Health and Morbidity Survey (NHMS) 2015. This was a cross sectional population-based study using a two stage stratified random sampling design. Elderly population aged 60 years and above was selected. Data were collected using pre-tested self-administered questionnaire in the form of sociodemographic profile, non-communicable diseases (NCD) comorbidities (status on hypertension, diabetes and hypercholesterolemia) and NCD risk factors (current smoker and physical activity). Obesity has been defined using the World Health Organization (WHO) Body Mass Index (BMI) guideline, 1998. A complex sampling design analysis was used for the descriptive statistics. The associated risk factors for obesity were identified using Multiple Logistic Regression analysis.
A total of 3794 respondents wertial proportion of Malaysian elderly were obese, and factors associated with obesity among them were being female, having secondary education with a household income of RM 3000 and above and being hypertensive or diabetic. Enhanced health promotion and education should be targeted at younger people in order to prevent obesity in the later years.

Antibiotic resistant bacteria particularly extended-spectrum beta lactamase (ESBL) producing are of major concern for management of outpatients. They can spread rapidly and are associated with poor patient outcome. However, there is scarcity of information on ear infection with ESBL producing bacteria in Ethiopia. Therefore, this study investigates the prevalence of ear infection with ESBL producing bacteria among outpatients attending Felegehiwot Referral Hospital, Northwest Ethiopia.
A hospital based cross-sectional study was conducted from May, 2018 to January, 2019. Demographic and clinical data were collected with face to face interview and were complemented with patient card review. Ear discharge specimens were collected from study participants using swab technique. All ear swab specimens were cultured using standard microbiological techniques. Brazilian biodiversity is one of the most extensive in the world and could be an effective source of new chemical entities for drug discovery. Mosquitoes are vectors for the transmission of dengue, Zika, chikungunya, yellow fever, and many other diseases of public health importance. These diseases have a major impact on tropical and subtropical countries, and their incidence has increased dramatically in recent decades, reaching billions of people at risk worldwide. The prevention of these diseases is mainly through vector control, which is becoming more difficult because of the emergence of resistant mosquito populations to the chemical insecticides. Strategies to provide efficient and safe vector control are needed, and secondary metabolites from plant species from the Brazilian biodiversity, especially Cerrado, that are biologically active for mosquito control are herein highlighted. Also, this is a literature revision of targets as insights to promote advances in the task of developing active compounds for vector control. In view of the expansion and occurrence of arboviruses diseases worldwide, scientific reviews on bioactive natural products are important to provide molecular models for vector control and contribute with effective measures to reduce their incidence.
Dimethyl fumarate (DMFU), a known Nrf2 activator, has proven its positive effect in different organs against ischemia/reperfusion (Is/Re) injury. Nevertheless, its possible impact to modulate intestinal Is/Re-induced injury has not been previously demonstrated before. Hence, this study aimed to investigate DMFU mechanistic maneuver against intestinal Is/Re.
To accomplish this goal, Wistar rats were allocated into four groups; Sham-operated (SOP), intestinal Is/Re (1 h/6 h), and 14 days pre-treated DMFU (15 and 25 mg/kg/day, p.o).

The dataset reports data collected in 24 15-m-radius circular plots, 12 of which were dominated by beech (Fagus sylvatica L.) and 12, by black pine (Pinus nigra subsp. laricio). In detail, this work provides dataset of i) plot-level attributes calculated from raw data, such as the number of trees, ii) tree-level data, comprising a total of 1709 trees, with information related to field-based forest inventory such as the diameter at breast height (DBH), and iii) plot-level information related to the time for conducting both traditional field- and TLS-based forest inventories.

Skin constructs manufactured using the biomimetic approach have reached a higher level of complexity in biological terms, including up to five different cell phenotypes and mirroring the epidermis, dermis and hypodermis. The confluence of the two perspectives, representing interdisciplinary inputs, is required for further advancement toward the future translation of extrusion bioprinting and to meet the urgent clinical demand for skin equivalents.The association between indirect environmental cues that modulate insect diapause and the actual stressors is by no means granted when a species encounters new environments. The box tree moth, Cydalima perspectalis, is an Asian pest whose rapid invasion in Europe causes considerable economic and ecological impacts. Larvae enter a winter diapause induced by the photoperiod in both native and invaded ranges, but factors that trigger the return to an active phase are still unknown. Yet, identifying them is crucial to understand how diapause end synchronizes with the end of the winter stress encountered in Europe. To test whether activity resumption is regulated by thermal and/or photoperiodic thresholds, or additive effects between these factors often involved in diapause termination, diapausing caterpillars from an invaded area were exposed to crossed treatments at the laboratory. The evolution of diapause rate was monitored over time and compared to that of nearby field sites invaded. A strong positive effect of increasing temperature was found on the rate and dynamics of diapause termination, whereas no compelling effect of photoperiod appeared. Resuming development directly when main stressors fade, not in response to indirect photoperiodic cues that could be mismatched outside native areas, likely contributes to the good match observed between diapause and the new climates that this pest encountered in the invaded range.Metabolic syndrome is characterized by the coexistence of different metabolic disorders which increase the risk of developing type 2 diabetes mellitus and cardiovascular diseases. Therefore, metabolic syndrome leads to a reduction in patients' quality of life as well as to an increase in morbidity and mortality. In the last few decades, it has been demonstrated that seaweeds exert multiple beneficial effects by virtue of their micro- and macronutrient content, which could help in the management of cardiovascular and metabolic diseases. This review aims to provide an updated overview on the potential of brown seaweeds for the prevention and management of metabolic syndrome and its associated diseases, based on the most recent evidence obtained from in vitro and in vivo preclinical and clinical studies. Owing to their great potential for health benefits, brown seaweeds are successfully used in some nutraceuticals and functional foods for treating metabolic syndrome comorbidities. However, some issues still need to be tackled and deepened to improve the knowledge of their ADME/Tox profile in humans, in particular by finding validated indexes of their absorption and obtaining reliable information on their efficacy and long-term safety.Caulerpa is an unusual algal genus from Caulerpaceae (Chlorophyta, Bryopsidales). https://www.selleckchem.com/products/ml355.html Species from this family produce a wide range of metabolites suitable for biotechnology applications. For this, we performed phylogenetic, genomic, expression analyses and prediction of the protein structure on sulfotransferases from Caulerpa. Sequences, domains and structures of sulfotransferases generally shared common characteristics with other plants and algae. However, we found an extensive duplication of sulfotransferase gene family, which is unique among the green algae. Expression analysis revealed specific transcript abundance in the pinnae and rachis of the alga. The unique genomic features could be utilized for the production of complex SPs, which require multiple and specific sulfation reactions. The expansion of this gene family in Caulerpaceae would have resulted in a number of proteins characterizing the unique SPs found in these algae. We provide a putative biosynthetic pathway of SPs, indicating the unique characteristics of this pathway in Caulerpa species. These data may help in the future selection of Caulerpa species for both commercial applications and genetic studies to improve the synthesis of valuable products from Caulerpa.Kuding tea (KT) is a bitter-tasting herbal tea that has been commonly used in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM). KT is no longer used only as a beverage, and various extraction methods have been applied to obtain aqueous and ethanolic KT extracts (KTE) or their fractions, which could potentially be used as dietary supplements. The major bioactive components of KT are triterpene saponins and polyphenols, but the composition of KT differs substantially between and among the different KT species. This in turn might affect the physiological effects of KT. KT exhibits antiobesity properties, possibly partly by affecting the intestinal microbiota. In addition, KT may mediate putative antioxidative, anti-inflammatory and anticancer activities. However, there is evidence that high KTE supplementation can adversely affect liver metabolism. The physiological relevance of KT in humans remains rather unclear since the potential health benefits of KT and its constituents reviewed here are mainly derived on the basis of in vitro and animal studies.
