Reaumuria trigyna, an endangered recretohalophyte, is a small archaic wild shrub endemic to arid and semiarid plateau regions of Inner Mongolia, China. Based on salt-related transcriptomic data, we isolated a GRX family gene, glutaredoxin like protein (RtGRL1), from R. trigyna that is associated with the removal of active oxygen and regulation of redox status. RtGRL1 encodes a plasma membrane and chloroplast-localized protein induced by salt, cold, drought stress, ABA, and H2O2. In Arabidopsis thaliana, ectopically expressed RtGRL1 positively regulated biomass accumulation, chlorophyll content, germination rate, and primary root length under salt and drought stress. Overexpression of RtGRL1 induced expression of genes related to antioxidant enzymes and proline biosynthesis, thus increasing glutathione biosynthesis, glutathione-dependent detoxification of reactive oxygen species (ROS), and proline content under stress. Changes in RtGRL1 expression consistently affected glutathione/oxidizedglutathione and ascorbate/dehydroascorbate ratios and H2O2 concentrations. Furthermore, RtGRL1 promoted several GSH biosynthesis gene transcripts, decreased leaf Na+ content, and maintained lower Na+/K+ ratios in transgenic A. thaliana compared to wild type plants. The Gulf of Guinea is severely affected by multiple human induced stressors, but the potential impacts of these on marine productivity remain unknown. We investigated the combined effects of heatwaves (climate stressor) and the polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon pyrene (proxy for oil) on the copepod Centropages velificatus. We quantified survival, reproduction and fecal pellet production of females exposed to concentrations of 0, 10, 100 and 100+ nM (saturated) pyrene under simulated heatwaves of different thermal intensity (+3 °C and +5 °C above control treatment temperature). Thermal stress due to both moderate and intensive heatwaves resulted in reduced survival and egg production. The negative effects of pyrene were only measurable at the high pyrene concentrations. However, thermal stress increased the sensitivity of C. velificatus to pyrene, indicating a synergistic interaction between the two stressors. We document that the interaction of multiple stressors can result in cumulative impacts that are stronger than expected based on single stressor studies. In contrast, little is known about the bioavailability and effects of sediment-associated ECs on fish. Particularly, when sediments are disturbed, e.g., during flood events, chemicals may be released from the sediment and become bioavailable. The main objectives of this study were to evaluate a) whether ECs from the sediment become bioavailable to fish when the sediment is suspended, and b) whether such exposure leads to endocrine responses in fish. Juvenile rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) were exposed over 21 days to constantly suspended sediments in the following treatments i) a contaminated sediment from the Luppe River, representing a "hotspot" for EC accumulation, ii) a reference sediment (ex suspension. The results of the present study demonstrated that sediments not only function as a sink for ECs but can turn into a significant source of pollution when sediments are resuspended as during flood-events. This highlights the need for sediment quality criteria considering bioavailability sediment-bound contaminants in context of flood events.
Juvenile dermatomyositis (JDM) is the most common inflammatory myopathy of childhood.
To analyze clinical features, paraclinical examinations, MSAs, treatment response and long-term outcome in a JDM cohort METHODS 58 patients (35F, 23M) from a tertiary referral center in the last two decades are included.
Mean age at onset was 8.1±4.3, with a mean follow-up period of 5.66±3.59 years. Dermatological manifestations (91%) and muscle weakness (76%) were the key diagnostic elements. Elevated serum creatine kinase levels (86%), electromyography (23/25), muscle MRI (12/15), and muscle biopsy (n=35) were compatible with the diagnosis. Out of 46 patients tested, 34 (76%) had autoantibodies, with NXP2 (21.7%), followed by TIF1g (17.4%), MDA5 (8.7%), and Mi-2 (8.7%). Presence of TIF1g and NXP2 indicated a severe course; and Ku a **** severe course compared to previous studies. Corticosteroids (100%) combined with methotrexate (93%) was the initial treatment. Biological disease modifying anti-rheumatic drugs (DMARDs) were used in 22% of the cohort.

The prognostic value of minimal residual disease (MRD) measured by fusion-gene transcript (FGT) detection was investigated in 76 infants (aged ≤1 year) with acute lymphoblastic leukaemia (ALL) with lysine methyltransferase 2A (KMT2A) rearrangements. Either at the end of induction or at later time-points, FGT-MRD-positivity was associated with poor outcome. FGT-MRD-positivity after first consolidation or first high-risk block detected 46·5% of infants with extremely poor outcome [disease-free survival (SE) 0·06 (0·06), cumulative incidence of relapse (SE) 0·91 (0·05)], which was also confirmed in multivariable analysis. Thus, FGT-MRD measurement at a single time-point clearly identifies infants with ALL who are curable with conventional chemotherapy and those who would benefit only from other treatment approaches.Mouse embryonic stem cells (mESCs) are pluripotent stem cell populations derived from the preimplantation embryo and are used to study the differentiation of many types of somatic and germ cells in developing embryos. They are also used to study cell lineages of extraembryonic tissues, such as the trophectoderm (TE) and the primitive endoderm (PrE). mESC cultures are suitable systems for reproducing cellular and molecular events occurring during the differentiation of these cell types, such as changes in gene expression patterns, signaling events, and genome rearrangements although the consistency between the results obtained using mESCs and those of in vivo studies on embryos should be carefully taken into account. Since TE and PrE cells can be induced from mESCs in vitro, mESC cultures are useful systems to study differentiation of these cell lineages during development, if used appropriately. In addition, human pluripotent stem cells (hPSCs), such as human embryonic stem cells (hESCs) and human-induced pluripotent stem cells (hiPSCs), are capable of generating extraembryonic lineages in vitro and are promising tools to study the differentiation of these lineages in the human embryo.
A key question concerning coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) is how effective and long lasting immunity against this disease is in individuals who were previously infected with severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2). We aimed to evaluate the risk of SARS-CoV-2 re-infections in the general population in Austria.
This is a retrospective observational study using national SARS-CoV-2 infection data from the Austrian epidemiological reporting system. As the primary outcome, we aim to compare the odds of SARS-CoV-2 re-infections of COVID-19 survivors of the first wave (February to April 30, 2020) versus the odds of first infections in the remainder general population by tracking polymerase chain reaction (PCR)-confirmed infections of both groups during the second wave from September 1 to November 30, 2020. Re-infection counts are tentative, since it cannot be excluded that the positive PCR in the first and/or second wave might have been a false positive.
We recorded 40 tentative re-infections in 14840 COVID-19 survivors of the first wave (0.27%) and 253581 infections in 8885640 individuals of the remaining general population (2.85%) translating into an odds ratio (95% confidence interval) of 0.09 (0.07 to 0.13).
We observed a relatively low re-infection rate of SARS-CoV-2 in Austria. Protection against SARS-CoV-2 after natural infection is comparable with the highest available estimates on vaccine efficacies. Further well-designed research on this issue is urgently needed for improving evidence-based decisions on public health measures and vaccination strategies.

Failing conservative therapies, uterine artery embolisation (UAE) has been proposed as a uterine-sparing option for treatment of symptomatic adenomyosis. UAE appears effective at short-term; however long-term durability is less well established.
To evaluate the long-term clinical efficacy of UAE for treatment of adenomyosis.
One hundred and four women with initial clinical success following UAE for adenomyosis (results previously published) were further followed with a two-part online survey. Part one inquired about menopause, symptom recurrence, need for further intervention and overall satisfaction. Part two comprised the Uterine Fibroid Symptom and health-related Quality of Life (UFS-QOL) questionnaire. Maintenance of clinical success was defined as remaining 'happy' or 'very happy' with overall outcome, no recurrence of symptoms, or need for further intervention.
Of those women with initial success, 91/104 (88%) participated in this long-term study at mean 52months following UAE. Maintenance of clinical success was demonstrated in 82/91 (90%) women. For the remaining 9/91 (10%) women, mean time to failure was 31months. There were 53/91 (58%) women who reached menopause at mean age of 51.5years, occurring at mean 30months post-UAE. UFS-QOL demonstrated significant decrease in symptom severity from 58.9 to 20.0 (P<0.001); and significant increase in QOL from 40.3 to 86.3 (P<0.001).

Opercular rate and tail beat frequencies were recorded by video as measures of behaviours and compared to metabolic rate recorded over a 24 h period. Results indicate that calculated values for aerobic scope were lower in younger fish.

The humoral immune response to influenza virus infection is complex and may be different compared to the antibody response elicited by vaccination. We analyzed the breadth of IgG and IgA responses in solid organ transplant (SOT) recipients to a diverse collection of 86 influenza antigens elicited by natural influenza A virus (IAV) infection or by vaccination. Antibody levels were quantified using a custom antigen microarray. A total of 120 patients were included 80 IAV infected (40 A/H1N1 and 40 A/H3N2) and 40 vaccinated. Based on hierarchical clustering analysis, infection with either H1N1 or H3N2 virus showed a more diverse antibody response compared to vaccination. Similarly, H1N1-infected individuals showed a significant IgG response to 27.9% of array antigens and H3N2-infected patients to 43.0% of antigens, whereas vaccination elicited a less broad immune response (7.0% of antigens). Immune responses were not exclusively targeting influenza hemagglutinin (HA) proteins but were also directed against conserved influenza antigens. Serum IgA responses followed a similar profile. This study provides novel data on the breadth of antibody responses to influenza. In this study, benzalkonium chloride (BAC) microcapsules were developed for surface disinfection purpose and were evaluated against Listeria monocytogenes and Escherichia coli biofilms.
Microcapsules were prepared with two different strategies uncomplexed ****microcapsules (UBM) containing ****and maltodextrins, and complexed ****microcapsules (CBM) containing ****complexed by pectin and maltodextrins. The minimum inhibitory concentrations (****) of free and microencapsulated ****were investigated against two food pathogens L. monocytogenes and E. coli. The antibiofilm activities of UBM and CBM against L. monocytogenes and E. coli biofilms formed on stainless steel at 37°C were evaluated and compared to ****used under its free form. **** of encapsulated ****were up to fourfold lower than those of free BAC. The UBM and CBM showed higher antibiofilm effect when compared to the free BAC.
Overall, results demonstrated that microencapsulation enhanced the antibacterial activity of ****against L. monocytogenes and E. coli biofilms.

In this study, post-mortem examination of 750 cattle and buffalo in Tanta abattoir, Centre of the Nile Delta, revealed visible TB in 4% of animals and a true prevalence of 6.85% (95% CI 5.3%-8.9%). Mycobacterial culture, histopathology and RT-PCR targeting all members of M. tuberculosis complex were performed, upon which 85%, 80% and 100% of each tested lesions were confirmed as TB, respectively. Mpb70-targeting PCR was conducted on ten RT-PCR positive samples for sequencing and identified nine Mycobacterium (M.) bovis strains and, interestingly, one M. tuberculosis (Mtb) strain from a buffalo. Bioinformatics tools were used for prediction of mutations, nucleotide polymorphisms, lineages, drug resistance and protein-protein interactions (PPI) of the sequenced strains. The Mtb strain was resistant to rifampicin, isoniazid and streptomycin, and to the best of our knowledge, this is the first report of multidrug resistant (MDR)-Mtb originating from buffaloes.
The humoral immune response to influenza virus infection is complex and may be different compared to the antibody response elicited by vaccination. We analyzed the breadth of IgG and IgA responses in solid organ transplant (SOT) recipients to a diverse collection of 86 influenza antigens elicited by natural influenza A virus (IAV) infection or by vaccination. Long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs) have been identified as critical regulators in gastric cancer (GC) progression. However, whether lncRNA small nucleolar host gene 4 (SNHG4) functions in GC development remains unknown. In this study, the bio-functional role of SNHG4 and its potential mechanism on GC progression were systematically dissected. To investigate the role of SNHG4 in GC, we silenced SNHG4 using short hairpin RNAs (shRNAs) to perform loss-of-function assays. The results showed that SNHG4 expression in GC cells was at a higher level compared to normal gastric mucosal epithelial cells. Knockdown of SNHG4 dramatically suppressed proliferation, migration and invasion, and blocked cell cycle progression of GC cells. Moreover, knockdown of SNHG4 upregulated microRNA-204-5p (miR-204-5p) expression, whereas downregulated ribonucleotide reductase subunit M2 (RRM2) expression in GC cells. Dual-luciferase reporter assay results showed that miR-204-5p was a direct target of SNHG4. Additionally, knockdown of SNHG4 suppressed GC tumorigenesis in xenograft mouse models. PE cells from the patient L6 exhibited also the capacity for in vitro growth and were cultured in two forms (i) as a suspension growing cell population, labeled LuCa-6S, composed of non-clumping single cells; and (ii) as a monolayer-like culture, labeled LuCa-6A, exhibiting tight cell-to-cell and to culture surface adherence. Unique features of these two sublines and their cell clones are the can vivo/in vitro model enables broader experimental approaches in studies of lung adenocarcinoma.
Family members face the burden of adult females living with depression who do not comply with psychiatric medication. Discomfort, tension, anxiety, frustration, and related feelings of hopelessness and dysfunction were identified by family members. There have also been records of financial problems, physical ill-health, limitations on social and recreational opportunities and a general deterioration in their quality of life. Borderline personality disorder (BPD) is characterised by emotional dysregulation, feelings of worthlessness, impulsivity, suicidality and poor relationships. As a result of the challenges in the treatment of women living with BPD and the lack of skills from the psychiatric nurse, there was a need to develop a model for psychiatric nurses to facilitate the mental health of women living with BPD.
To describe the process that was followed in developing, describing and evaluating a model that could be used as a framework of reference for psychiatric nurses to facilitate the mental health of women living with BPD.
A theory-generative, qualitative, exploratory, descriptive and contextual study design was used to develop the model. The central concept of the model was derived from a previous study 'The experiences of women living with borderline personality disorder'. The process entailed the identification of the central concept and other essential criteria, the classification of the central concepts and describing the relationships between the concepts.
The central concept was identified as 'facilitation of self-empowerment' of women living with BPD. The concepts 'facilitation' and 'self-empowerment' were defined and classified. The identified and defined central concepts were placed into interrelated statements. The model to facilitate self-empowerment of women living with BPD was developed, described and evaluated. The model has not been implemented.

The development of research skills is an important aspect of undergraduate medical training that facilitates the practice of evidence-based medicine. The inclusion of research training into undergraduate medical curricula can take various formats and is compulsory for all students at the Nelson R. Mandela School of Medicine (NRMSM). The evaluation of this training is important, both to ensure that students obtain the required research skills and to improve the quality of the training.
The aim of this study was to evaluate undergraduate medical students' and staff learning, engagement and experiences in the training and assessment of third-year research projects.
This research was conducted at NRMSM, South Africa.
Questionnaires were administered to third-year medical students after they completed their research project poster presentations and to the staff who assessed the presentations. Responses to the learning process, group work, alignment between module outcomes and assessment and the benefits of poster presentations were assessed.

Here, we recorded from gerbil AC neurons while they discriminated between a 4-Hz amplitude modulation (AM) broadband noise and AM rates >4 Hz. We found a proportion of neurons possessed neural thresholds based on spike pattern or spike count that were better than the recorded session's behavioral threshold, suggesting that spike count could provide sufficient information for this perceptual task. A population decoder that relied on temporal information outperformed a decoder that relied on spike count alone, but the spike count decoder still remained sufficient to explain average behavioral performance. This leaves open the possibility that more demanding perceptual judgments require temporal information. Thus, we asked whether accurate classification of different AM rates between 4 and 12 Hz required the information contained in AC temporal discharge patterns. The purpose of this study was to report a series of cases of solitary fibrofolliculoma, a lesion seldom observed in the lids. Demographics, as well as clinical and histological aspects of the lesion were evaluated.
This was a retrospective case series spanning a period of 18 years. All the included patients were diagnosed with solitary fibrofolliculoma confirmed by histological examination. Data regarding patient demographics, signs, and symptoms, course of the disease, location of the lesion, clinical and histological diagnosis, and outcome were collected.
Eleven cases of solitary fibrofolliculoma were diagnosed in the study period. The median age of patients was 51 ± 16.3 years (range 27-78 years). Most patients were females (7/11; 64%). Five of the patients (45%) were asymptomatic; four (36%) reported bleeding, one (9%) had referred itching, and one (9%) rubbing of the lesion. The lesion occurred in a wide range of locations; one of them was located in the lids. The diagnosis for all lesions was histexcisional biopsy and histological examination for the recognition of this lesion.

The study group consisted of four patients (one female and three males) diagnosed with Alport syndrome. Visual acuity in the worst eye was between 20/40 and 20/60. All male patients had anterior lenticonus on biomicroscopy. The observed retinal findings included dots and flecks and pigmentary changes in the macula. On optical coherence tomography angiography, the inner retinal layers of all patients displayed thinning (especially in the temporal quadrant of the macula) and an increase in the foveal avascular zone. A thick choroid was observed in both eyes of the two youngest patients.
In patients with Alport syndrome, the inner retinal layers suffer changes due to type IV collagen mutations. Optical coherence tomography angiography makes it possible to visualize and document these findings, making it a useful tool in the detection of early retinal findings associated with Alport syndrome.

Isolates were identified by the optochin susceptibility and bile solubility tests, using a biochemical identification system. The minimum inhibitory concentration was determined by the broth microdilution method. Molecular identification was performed by analyses of three constitutive genes and the complementary multilocus sequence. The molecular epidemiology of Streptococcus pneumoniae was investigated using multilocus sequence typing, and the presence of the capsular polysaccharide-encoding gene was assessed using conventional polymerase chain reaction. Objective Lower limb amputation is common in war combat and armed conflict as well as in traumatic settings and presents a challenge for health care providers. The incorporation of advanced technologies, particularly virtual reality, presents an opportunity to address the main consequences of amputation, principally balance and gait. The aim of this study was to investigate the additional effect of virtual reality with a traditional rehabilitation exercise program on balance and gait in unilateral, traumatic lower limb amputees. Materials and Methods Thirty-two traumatic lower limb amputees, fulfilling a postfitting rehabilitation program at least 6 months ago, were recruited and randomly assigned into two identically sized groups; group C (control group) experiencing the traditional exercise program and group VR (virtual reality group) experiencing an addition of a virtual reality training. The intervention was conducted over 6 weeks at a rate of three sessions per week. Outcome measures assessed before and after 6 weeks were the Berg Balance Scale (BBS), Timed Up and Go (TUG) test, Dynamic Gait Index (DGI), and 6-minute walk test (6 MWT). Results Both interventions induced improvement in all measured parameters (P 0.05). Conclusion Virtual reality is a promising, amusing, and safe intervention for addressing balance and gait in unilateral, traumatic lower limb amputees.Objective The Köhler effect is a social-psychological group motivation gain phenomenon that has been successfully adapted to video-based exercise games (exergames) using human partners. This research then shifted to using software-generated partners (SGPs), providing greater flexibility and adaptability to manipulate the game environment to be most motivating for the user. However, recent SGP-based experiments have demonstrated a diminished motivation gain effect. Extending previous work with human-human partners, this experiment varied the perceived exercise ability of the SGP as a potential motivation gain effect moderator on the participant's exercise persistence. Materials and Methods Male and female college students (n = 176; mean age, 21.5 years) completed two series of abdominal plank exercises using an exergame developed specifically for a previous Köhler study. Participants completed the exercises individually and, after a rest, were randomly assigned to complete the same exercises again alone or with one of three SGPs low ability discrepancy partner (LP), moderate ability discrepancy partner (MP), and high ability discrepancy partner (HP). Results A 2 (sex) × 4 (condition) analysis of covariance main effect for Condition was not significant after controlling for Block 1 times (P = 0.093). However, contrast estimates of plank persistence times between the MP condition and individual no-partner control were significant, P = 0.014, 95% confidence interval [4.34-37.68]. There were no other significant condition persistence differences. In this article, a novel chiral amino acid analysis method is described, which reduces the risk of organic contamination and spurious signals from by-products by avoiding organic solvents and organic additives. Online solid-phase extraction, chiral liquid chromatography, and mass spectrometry were used for automated analysis of amino acids from solid and aqueous environmental samples. Carbonated water (pH ∼3, ∼5 wt % CO2 achieved at 6 MPa) was used as the extraction solvent for solid samples at 150°C and as the mobile phase at ambient temperature for chiral chromatographic separation. Of 18 enantiomeric amino acids, 5 enantiomeric pairs were separated with a chromatographic resolution >1.5 and 12 pairs with a resolution >0.7. The primary endpoint was the intra-hospital mortality rate. Secondary endpoints were occurrence of major complications and length of hospital stay (LOS). The aim of this study was to investigate the additional effect of virtual reality with a traditional rehabilitation exercise program on balance and gait in unilateral, traumatic lower limb amputees. Materials and Methods Thirty-two traumatic lower limb amputees, fulfilling a postfitting rehabilitation program at least 6 months ago, were recruited and randomly assigned into two identically sized groups; group C (control group) experiencing the traditional exercise program and group VR (virtual reality group) experiencing an addition of a virtual reality training. The intervention was conducted over 6 weeks at a rate of three sessions per week. Outcome measures assessed before and after 6 weeks were the Berg Balance Scale (BBS), Timed Up and Go (TUG) test, Dynamic Gait Index (DGI), and 6-minute walk test (6 MWT). Results Both interventions induced improvement in all measured parameters (P 0.05). Conclusion Virtual reality is a promising, amusing, and safe intervention for addressing balance and gait in unilateral, traumatic lower limb amputees.Objective The Köhler effect is a social-psychological group motivation gain phenomenon that has been successfully adapted to video-based exercise games (exergames) using human partners. Extending previous work with human-human partners, this experiment varied the perceived exercise ability of the SGP as a potential motivation gain effect moderator on the participant's exercise persistence. Materials and Methods Male and female college students (n = 176; mean age, 21.5 years) completed two series of abdominal plank exercises using an exergame developed specifically for a previous Köhler study. Participants completed the exercises individually and, after a rest, were randomly assigned to complete the same exercises again alone or with one of three SGPs low ability discrepancy partner (LP), moderate ability discrepancy partner (MP), and high ability discrepancy partner (HP). Results A 2 (sex) × 4 (condition) analysis of covariance main effect for Condition was not significant after controlling for Block 1 times (P = 0.093). However, contrast estimates of plank persistence times between the MP condition and individual no-partner control were significant, P = 0.014, 95% confidence interval [4.34-37.68]. There were no other significant condition persistence differences. Main surgical steps ventral subcoronal incision, dorsal dissection of glandelar urethra until piercing the tip of the glans, dorsal urethrotomy, and graft transposition. Low urinary tract symptoms, uroflowmetry, and urinalysis were assessed at follow-up. Simplified International Index Erectile Function and Hypospadias Objective Scoring Evaluation were applied 1 year after surgery.
Sixteen patients with a median age of 56.5 years (IQR 35.7-66.7) were included. Median stricture length was 5.5 cm (IQR 4-8.7). In 3 patients, Clavien-Dindo grade I-II complications were reported. At 1 year, median peak flow was 18 mL/seg (IQR 12.7-27.4) and median mean flow 7.8 mL/seg (IQR 6.1-9.9). At 41.5 months follow-up (IQR 13.2-74), all patients were stricture free and had no changes in erectile function. Hypospadias Objective Scoring Evaluation score ≥14 points was achieved by 14 patients (87.5%).

In recent years, changes in attitudes toward sexuality, psychological value of reproductive organs and the desire to preserve fertility have led to a growing interest in uterine-preserving surgery for Pelvic Organ prolapse. Minimally invasive procedures derived from sacrocolpopexy are considered the gold standard in the treatment of apical Pelvic Organ prolapse. However, dissection at the level of the promontory may be challenging, particularly in obese women and when an anatomical variation exists. This may be associated with rare but serious neurological or ureteral morbidity as well as life-threatening vascular injury.

Our technique entails 2 times. During the vaginal time, a polypropylene mesh is fixed to the cervical fascia and the 2 extremities are introduced in the abdominal cavity through the Douglas pouch. During the laparoscopic time, a retroperitoneal tunnel is made along the walls of the lateral abdominal walls; thereafter, each of the 2 extremities of the mesh is passed through the omolateral tunnel and "tension-free" suspended to the abdominal wall.
Our combined technique may allow a safer approach, reducing the risks of serious complications. Moreover, it leads to a more physiological orientation of the vaginal axis. Further controlled studies are needed to confirm our suggestion.

To evaluate factors associated with simple nephrectomy at a safety net hospital with a diverse patient population and large catchment area. Simple nephrectomy is an underreported surgery. Performance of simple nephrectomy may represent a failure of management of underlying causes.

Eighty-five patients underwent simple nephrectomy during the study period; 55% were non-white, 77% were women, and the median age at time of surgery was 46 years. The most common medical factors contributing to simple nephrectomy were stone disease in 55.3%, followed by retained ureteral stent (30.6%) and stricture (30.6%). The most common social factors were lack of insurance (58.5%), substance abuse issues (32.3%), mental health issues (24.6%), and immigration status (18.5%). In 38.8% of cases, the provider felt the surgery was preventable if medical factors leading to simple nephrectomy were properly addressed.

Ninety-one reliable metabolites matching the human metabolome database (HMDB) were confirmed. ROC curve results revealed that 4-hydroxytriazolam, urate and bilirubin exerted higher AUC values. Pathway analysis indicated that the significantly different metabolites were mainly involved in primary bile acid biosynthesis, purine metabolism and glycerophospholipid metabolism.

The aim of this study was to develop a professional translation and cultural adaptation of the Portuguese S3 non-invasive ventilation questionnaire. 234 stable patients (128 male patients, 53.8%) with a mean age of 69.3 years under long-term home non-invasive ventilation were recruited from a single-center outpatient clinic. The most frequent diagnostic groups were obesity hypoventilation syndrome, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and restrictive chest wall disorders. The Portuguese version of the questionnaire was obtained using translation ****-translation process with two professional translators. Internal consistency for the total score was good (Cronbach's α coefficient of 0.76) as well as for the "respiratory symptoms" and the "sleep and side effects" domains (Cronbach's α coefficient=0.68 and Cronbach's α coefficient=0.72, respectively).

Over the past decade, different detection procedures have developed for the assessment of human cardiac troponins (cTnI). This review emphasizes on summarizing optical, and electrochemical biosensors for the detection of cTnI, brain natriuretic peptide (BNP), and neuron-specific enolase (NSE) as a critical biomarker in stroke.Gastric cancer is the third leading cause of cancer mortality and is frequently associated with nutritional disorders, the detection and proper management of which can contribute to improving quality of life and survival. Being aware of the consequences and of the different treatments for this neoplasm allows us to offer an adequate nutritional approach. In surgical candidates, integration into ERAS-type programs (Enhanced Recovery after Surgery) is increasingly frequent, and includes a pre-surgical nutritional approach and the initiation of early oral tolerance. After gastrectomy, the new anatomical and functional state of the digestive tract may lead to the appearance of «post-gastrectomy syndromes», the management of which may require diet modification and medical treatment. Those who receive neoadjuvant or adjuvant antineoplastic therapy benefit from specific dietary recommendations based on intercurrent symptoms and/or artificial nutrition. In palliative patients, the nutritional approach should be carried out while respecting the principle of autonomy and weighing the risks and benefits of the intervention. The objective of this review is to highlight the importance and role of nutrition in patients with gastric cancer and to provide guidelines for nutritional management based on the current evidence. To investigate the perspective of physicians treating chronic airway diseases on the importance of device and substance characteristics influencing the compliance of patients with chronic obstructive airways diseases. We surveyed physicians' perspective on the impact of device and substance characteristics on patients' compliance. This study was carried out by running a structured questionnaire, to a total of 144 physicians, conducting personal interviews and evaluating answers on a scale from 1 for most to 6 for least important influencing parameter. The most frequent diagnostic groups were obesity hypoventilation syndrome, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and restrictive chest wall disorders. The Portuguese version of the questionnaire was obtained using translation back-translation process with two professional translators. Surveillance of HNB product use as a modified risk tobacco product may need to consider the effects of HNB products on poly-tobacco use among young people.Objectives The purpose of this study was to select a health warning message location on a waterpipe (WP) that both attracted visual attention and conveyed the risks associated with WP smoking. Methods During June through November 2019, we conducted a within-subjects randomized experiment (N = 74) using eye tracking equipment to examine visual attention to 3 placements of a health warning on the WP (stem, water bowl, hose). We asked young adult ever WP users 3 questions about WP harm perceptions. We used generalized linear mixed models to examine the amount of fixation time spent on the placement locations; we used repeated measures ANOVA to model changes in harm perceptions. Results There were statistically significant differences across all 3 placement locations; regardless of place, all HWLs attracted a comparable amount of visual attention. Absolute WP harm perceptions significantly increased following the experiment and remained significantly higher at the one-week follow-up, compared to baseline. Conclusions Warnings on WPs attracted visual attention and increased harm perceptions, and those harm perceptions remained high one week after the experiment. Results Females had significantly (p less then .05) greater hassles in all domains than males, except for work, personal relationships, and living environment. ANOVA revealed both sexes in the high hassle exposure groups tended to have poorer eating behaviors than the low hassle exposure group. Additionally, high hassle exposure females and males slept less, and had poorer sleep quality, satisfaction with life, and physical and mental health than lower hassle exposure groups. Multiple linear regression analyses examining associations of hassle exposures and hassle reactivity with each health behavior, adjusted for sex and body mass index, revealed all models were statistically significant, except fruit and vegetable intake. Conclusions Lower hassle during college is associated with healthier weight-related behaviors and better health status. Methods The population of this cross-sectional study included Korean adolescents (N = 57,302) from the 15th Korea Youth Risk Behavior Survey (2019). Descriptive statistical and multiple logistic regression analyses were conducted to assess the water-drinking behavior during a previous 7-day period according to the general characteristics of the adolescents. Associations were tested between water drinking and beverage consumption (carbonated beverages, sugar-sweetened beverages, energy/high-caffeine drinks, and milk). Results Overall, 4.1% of adolescents drank less than one glass, 19.6% drank one to 2 glasses, 23.1% drank 3 glasses, 17.8% drank 4 glasses, and 35.4% drank ≥ 5 glasses of water per day during the last 7 days. The distribution of water drinking differed according to the characteristics of adolescents and was associated with the frequencies of consumption of carbonated drinks, and sugar-sweetened drinks. More than 3 times the carbonated drink (aOR = 1.28, 95% CI = 1.19-1.38) and sugar-sweetened drink consumption (aOR = 1.25, 95% CI = 1.16-1.34) were associated with lower water drinking. Conclusions Higher consumption of carbonated and sugar-sweetened beverages was associated with less water drinking.Objectives Preparation of patients for colon tumor resection, which involves giving up smoking, reducing alcohol intake, having a proper diet, and increasing physical activity, significantly shortens the hospitalization period. In this study, we aimed at determining the relationship between the fear of cancer progression (FoP) and health behaviors among people with colon cancer. Methods Participants were patients a week before a colon tumor surgery and 6 months after. Measured variables included smoking, alcohol intake, anti-health products intake (anti-health behaviors), physical activity, pro-health products intake (pro-health behaviors), and fear of progression cancer. Results Comparing the week before the surgery and 6 months after revealed a decrease in smoking (η² = .02), alcohol intake (η² = .03), anti-health products intake (η² = .06) and physical activity (η² = .06). A higher level of fear of cancer progression is related to decrease in anti-health behaviors, but does not affect the change in health-promoting behaviors among patients with colorectal cancer.

Interactions between structured optical fields (SOFs) and meta-atoms have been intensively studied, and stimulated by recent advancements on the generation of SOFs and on the synthesis of exotic meta-atoms. Multipole expansion is an efficient and accurate theoretical framework for studying such problems. In this work, explicit expressions of SOFs and their beam-shape coefficients are provided, and their properties are also briefly discussed; the considered SOFs include Laguerre-Gaussian (LG) beams, tightly-focused LG beams, Bessel beams, and cylindrical vector beams. Using the multipole expansion, selective excitations of multipolar resonances of a sphere is discussed. In addition, angular momentum dichroisms of a chiral sphere and an anisotropically chiral meta-atom are calculated to demonstrate selective excitation of multipoles with the desired order, parity, and orientation using engineered SOFs with angular momentum.We propose an interactive optical 3D-touch user interface (UI) by using a holographic light-field (LF) 3D display and a color detection system of the scattered light from the touched 3D image. In the proposed system, color information embedded in the LF is used to realize the 3D position identification and movement detection of the interaction point in 3D space only with a single RGB camera. We demonstrate the real-time interactive implementation of the interface working at 12 frames per second, which verifies the feasibility of our proposed concept.An adaptive optics optical coherence tomography (AO-OCT) system is used to assess sixty healthy eyes of thirty subjects (age 22 to 75) to evaluate how the outer retinal layers, foveal eccentricity and age effect the mean cone density. The cone mosaics of different retinal planes (the cone inner segment outer segment junction (IS/OS), the cone outer segment combined with the IS/OS (ISOS+), the cone outer segment tips (COST), and the full en-face plane (FEF)) at four main meridians (superior, nasal, inferior, temporal) and para- and perifoveal eccentricities (ecc 2.5° and 6.5°) were analyzed quantitatively. The mean overall cone density was 19,892/mm2 at ecc 2.5° and 13,323/mm2 at ecc 6.5°. A significant impact on cone density was found for eccentricity (up to 6,700/mm2 between ecc 2.5° and 6.5°), meridian (up to 3,700/mm2 between nasal and superior meridian) and layer (up to 1,400/mm2 between FEF and IS/OS). Age showed only a weak negative effect. These factors as well as inter-individual variability have to be taken into account when comparing cone density measurements between healthy and pathologically changed eyes, as their combined effect on density can easily exceed several thousand cones per mm2 even in parafoveal regions.A new alternative to calculate the null-screen for highly freeform or complex surfaces for any desired pattern to be observed on the detector is presented. To validate the proposed method, we used the Zernike polynomials to design complex surfaces with sagittas greater or equal to 40 mm, and peak to valley greater or equal to 30 mm, between the used surface and the best fit sphere. The freeform surfaces were fabricated using a 3D printer and a five-axis CNC machine. With the proposed method we can calculate the image that will be observed over the detector for any null-screen and any freeform surface that want to be analyzed. The results showed that the proposal works very well for extremely fast complex freeform surfaces (with slopes ≤ 80°), obtaining an error smaller than 0.66% in PV and 0.36% in rms in sagitta differences.In this work we demonstrate a high sensitivity atomic gradiometer capable of operation in earth-field level environments. We apply a light-pulse sequence at four times the Larmor frequency to achieve gradiometer sensitivity less then 20 fT/cm/Hz at the finite field strength of 22 µT. The experimental timing sequence can be tuned to the field magnitude of interest. Our all-optical scalar gradiometer performs a differential measurement between two regions of a single vapor cell on a 4 cm baseline. Our results pave the way for extensions to operation in higher dimensions, vector sensitivity, and more advanced gradiometers.We present an experimental and theoretical physical random bit (PRB) generator using the mesoscopic chaos from a photonic-crystal optomechanical microcavity with a size of ∼10µm and very low operating intracavity energy of ∼60 Femto-Joule that was fabricated with CMOS compatible processes. The proposed on-chip whole-passive fully-optical meta-neural-network is very compact and works at the speed of light, with very low energy consumption. Various complex functions that are performed by digital neural networks can be implemented by our proposal at the wavelength of 1.55 µm. As an example, the performance of our optical neural network is benchmarked on the prototypical machine learning task of classification of handwritten digits images from the Modified National Institute of Standards and Technology (MNIST) dataset, and an accuracy comparable to the state of the art is achieved.Interested in the recent development of the building up of photovoltaic devices using graphene-like quantum dots as a novel electron acceptor; we study in this work the optoelectronic properties of edge-functionalized SiC quantum dots using the first principles density functional. As an example, the performance of our optical neural network is benchmarked on the prototypical machine learning task of classification of handwritten digits images from the Modified National Institute of Standards and Technology (MNIST) dataset, and an accuracy comparable to the state of the art is achieved.Interested in the recent development of the building up of photovoltaic devices using graphene-like quantum dots as a novel electron acceptor; we study in this work the optoelectronic properties of edge-functionalized SiC quantum dots using the first principles density functional.
