Although blocking potassium channels with quinine and PAX prevented sperm to elicit in vitro capacitation by impairing motility and mitochondrial function, as well as reducing intracellular calcium levels, the extent of that inhibition was larger with quinine than with PAX. Therefore, while our data support that calcium-activated potassium channels are essential for sperm capacitation in pigs, they also suggest that other potassium channels, such as the voltage-gated, tandem pore domain, and mitochondrial ATP-regulated ones, are involved in that process. Thus, further research is needed to elucidate the specific functions of these channels and the mechanisms underlying its regulation during sperm capacitation.To change their behaviors, cells require actin proteins to assemble together into long polymers/filaments-and so a critical goal is to understand the factors that control this actin filament (F-actin) assembly and stability. We have identified a family of unusual actin regulators, the MICALs, which are flavoprotein monooxygenase/hydroxylase enzymes that associate with flavin adenine dinucleotide (FAD) and use the co-enzyme nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide phosphate (NADPH) in Redox reactions. F-actin is a specific substrate for these MICAL Redox enzymes, which oxidize specific amino acids within actin to destabilize actin filaments. Furthermore, this MICAL-catalyzed reaction is reversed by another family of Redox enzymes (SelR/MsrB enzymes)-thereby revealing a reversible Redox signaling process and biochemical mechanism regulating actin dynamics. Interestingly, in addition to the MICALs' Redox enzymatic portion through which MICALs covalently modify and affect actin, MICALs have multiple other domains. Less is known about the roles of these other MICAL domains. Here we provide approaches for obtaining high levels of recombinant protein for the Redox only portion of Mical and demonstrate its catalytic and F-actin disassembly activity. These results provide a ground state for future work aimed at defining the role of the other domains of Mical - including characterizing their effects on Mical's Redox enzymatic and F-actin disassembly activity.Obesity is a major risk factor for a large number of secondary diseases, including cancer. Specific insights into the role of gender differences and secondary comorbidities, such as type 2 diabetes (T2D) and cancer risk, are yet to be fully identified. The aim of this study is thus to find a correlation between the transcriptional deregulation present in the subcutaneous adipose tissue of obese patients and the oncogenic signature present in multiple cancers, in the presence of T2D, and considering gender differences. The subcutaneous adipose tissue (SAT) of five healthy, normal-weight women, five obese women, five obese women with T2D and five obese men were subjected to RNA-sequencing, leading to the identification of deregulated coding and non-coding RNAs, classified for their oncogenic score. A panel of DE RNAs was validated via Real-Time PCR and oncogene expression levels correlated the oncogenes with anthropometrical parameters, highlighting significant trends. For each analyzed condition, we identified the deregulated pathways associated with cancer, the prediction of possible prognosis for different cancer types and the lncRNAs involved in oncogenic networks and tissues. Our results provided a comprehensive characterization of oncogenesis correlation in SAT, providing specific insights into the possible molecular targets implicated in this process. Indeed, the identification of deregulated oncogenes also in SAT highlights hypothetical targets implicated in the increased oncogenic risk in highly obese subjects. These results could shed light on new molecular targets to be specifically modulated in obesity and highlight which cancers should receive the most attention in terms of better prevention in obesity-affected patients.Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) infection may lead to coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) which, in turn, may be associated with multiple organ dysfunction. In this review, we present advantages and disadvantages of cannabidiol (CBD), a non-intoxicating phytocannabinoid from the cannabis plant, as a potential agent for the treatment of COVID-19. CBD has been shown to downregulate proteins responsible for viral entry and to inhibit SARS-CoV-2 replication. Preclinical studies have demonstrated its effectiveness against diseases of the respiratory system as well as its cardioprotective, nephroprotective, hepatoprotective, neuroprotective and anti-convulsant properties, that is, effects that may be beneficial for COVID-19. Only the latter two properties have been demonstrated in clinical studies, which also revealed anxiolytic and antinociceptive effects of CBD (given alone or together with Δ9-tetrahydrocannabinol), which may be important for an adjuvant treatment to improve the quality of life in patients with COVID-19 and to limit post-traumatic stress symptoms. However, one should be aware of side effects of CBD (which are rarely serious), drug interactions (also extending to drugs acting against COVID-19) and the proper route of its administration (vaping may be dangerous). Clearly, further clinical studies are necessary to prove the suitability of CBD for the treatment of COVID-19.This issue is the second volume of the previous Special Issue, "Cell and Molecular Biology of Thyroid Disorders" [...].We prove that, within the class of pair potential Hamiltonians, the excess entropy is a universal, temperature-independent functional of the density and pair correlation function. This result extends Henderson's theorem, which states that the free energy is a temperature dependent functional of the density and pair correlation. There is considerable scope for improvement in parent awareness and ability to recall key safe sleep messages. Awareness of advice does not always translate into safe infant care. Health promotion messaging to encourage safer infant sleep, ultimately aimed at reducing sudden unexpected infant deaths, needs more effective supportive strategies and dissemination if future campaigns are to be successful.

Many older adults remain inactive despite the known positive health implications of physical activity (improved mood, reduced mortality risk). Physical inactivity is an interdependent phenomenon in couples, but most research examines physical inactivity at the individual level. We estimated the average amount of prolonged physical inactivity for older adult couples and, using dyadic analysis, identified physical and mental health determinants thereof.
Forty-six heterosexual older adult couples (age = 70.61 ± 6.56) from the Veterans Integrated Service Network 20 cohort of the Collaborative Aging Research using Technology (CART) initiative were included. The average number per day of prolonged inactive periods (no step counts or sleep activity for ≥30 min) was estimated using actigraphy data collected over a month.

We also suggest a way to calibrate the volumes to become independent of technical limitations. The methodology we propose leads to stability curves comparable to that calculated from CD data and provides a new tool for thermodynamic measurements in complex environments.
Does the duration of embryo exposure to hyaluronic acid (HA) enriched medium improve the rate of live birth events (LBEs)?
The use of embryo transfer (ET) medium rich in HA improves LBE (a singleton or twin live birth) regardless of the duration of exposure evaluated in this study, but does not alter gestation or birthweight (BW).
HA-enriched medium is routinely used for ET in ART to facilitate implantation, despite inconclusive evidence on safety and efficacy.
A cohort study was performed evaluating clinical treatment outcomes before and after HA-enriched ET medium was introduced into routine clinical practice. In total, 3391 fresh ET procedures were performed using low HA and HA-rich medium in women undergoing publicly funded IVF/ICSI treatment cycles between May 2011 and April 2015 were included in this cohort study.
A total of 1018 ET performed using low HA medium were compared with 1198, and 1175 ET following exposure to HA-rich medium for 2-4 h (long HA exposure) or for 10-30 min (short HA exppriate research investigations are required for the continuous evaluation of efficacy and safety of HA.

Furthermore, trauma and surgical patients often have real or perceived contraindications to prophylaxis that affect the timing of preventive measures and the consistency with which they can be applied. In this Clinical Consensus Document, the American Association for the Surgery of Trauma Critical Care Committee addresses several practical clinical questions pertaining to specific or unique aspects of VTE prophylaxis in critically ill and injured patients.
To determine willingness to pay for children's spectacles, and barriers to purchasing children's spectacles in Cambodia.
We conducted vision screenings, and eye examinations as indicated, for all consenting children at 21 randomly selected secondary schools. We invited parents/guardians of children found to have refractive problems to complete a willingness to pay for spectacles survey, using a binary-with-follow-up technique.
We conducted vision screenings on 12 128 secondary schoolchildren, and willingness to pay for spectacles surveys with 491 parents/guardians (n=491) from Kandal and Phnom Penh provinces in Cambodia. We found 519 children with refractive error, 7 who had pre-existing spectacles and 14 recommended spectacles for lower ametropias. About half (53.2%; 95% CI 44.0% to 62.1%) of parents/guardians were willing to pay KHR70 000 (US$17.5; average market price) or more for spectacles. Mean willingness-to-pay price was KHR74 595 (US$18.6; 95% CI KHR64 505 to 86 262; 95% CI US$16.1 to US$21.6) in Phnom Penh and KHR55 651 (US$13.

The use of ASM was associated with a worse rehabilitation outcome, independently of the onset of epilepsy during treatment. LPTS appear to exert a negative impact on rehabilitation outcome and their occurrence is not reduced by prophylactic therapy, whereas EPTS do not influence outcome. Our findings caution against the generic use of prophylactic therapy to prevent post-traumatic epilepsy in patients with TBI.This study aimed to construct convention-radiomics CT nomogram containing conventional CT characteristics and radiomics signature for distinguishing fat-poor angiomyolipoma (fp-AML) from clear-cell renal cell carcinoma (ccRCC). 29 fp-AML and 110 ccRCC patients were enrolled and underwent CT examinations in this study. The radiomics-only logistic model was constructed with selected radiomics features by the analysis of variance (ANOVA)/Mann-Whitney (MW), correlation analysis, and Least Absolute Shrinkage and Selection Operator (LASSO), and the radiomics score (rad-score) was computed. The convention-radiomics logistic model based on independent conventional CT risk factors and rad-score was constructed for differentiating. Then the relevant nomogram was developed. Receiver operation characteristic (ROC) curves were calculated to quantify the accuracy for distinguishing. The rad-score of ccRCC was smaller than that of fp-AML. The convention-radioimics logistic model was constructed containing variables of enhancement pattern, VUP, and rad-score. To the entire cohort, the area under the curve (AUC) of convention-radiomics model (0.968 [95% CI 0.923-0.990]) was higher than that of radiomics-only model (0.958 [95% CI 0.910-0.985]). Our study indicated that convention-radiomics CT nomogram including conventional CT risk factors and radiomics signature exhibited better performance in distinguishing fp-AML from ccRCC.The effect of light-to-moderate alcohol consumption on cancer risk remains controversial. We examined the association between low-level alcohol consumption and cancer mortality. A cohort study included 331,984 Korean adults free of cancer at baseline who underwent a comprehensive health checkup examination. Participants were categorized into never drinkers, former drinkers, and current drinkers who were further divided into light, moderate, heavy, and very heavy drinkers. Vital status and cancer-related deaths were ascertained through links to national death records. During 1,633,906 person-years of follow-up (median 5.3 years interquartile range 3.8-6.2), 374 cancer-related deaths were identified (cancer-cause mortality rate of 23 per 105 person-years). When former and never drinkers were classified as non-drinkers, the light drinkers had a lowest risk of cancer mortality compared with non-drinkers and other current drinkers (J-shaped); however, with consideration of lifetime abstinence history, current drinking was positively associated with cancer mortality in a dose-dependent manner. The convention-radioimics logistic model was constructed containing variables of enhancement pattern, VUP, and rad-score. This analytical cross-sectional study was performed on health personnel from Huaycan Hospital in Peru. The QRISK model was used to measure lifetime CVR. The association and diagnostic accuracy for TyG calculated as Ln (TG (mg/dL) × glucose (mg/dL)/2) and TG/HDL-C ratio were determined using Poisson regression models and ROC curves with Youden index.
In total, 291 adults (207 women and 84 men) were analyzed. In the adjusted Poisson models, each unit of TG/HDL-C increased 1.22-fold and 1.16-fold the probability of high lifetime CVR in men and women, respectively. However, each unit of TyG increased 1.98-fold in men and 3.25-fold in women the probability of high lifetime CVR. The optimal cutoff values of TG/HDL-C were 2.64 (AUC 0.77), 3.90 (AUC 0.80), and 2.64 (AUC 0.74) for the overall population, men, and women, respectively. Likewise, the optimal cutoff values of TyG were 9.04 (AUC 0.80), 8.95 (AUC 0.79), and 9.04 (AUC 0.80) for the overall population, men, and women, respectively.

Schools are an ideal environment to address this issue and to start the process of nutrition education. Therefore, teachers should be equipped with adequate nutrition knowledge. This study was designed to evaluate the level of general nutrition knowledge and demographic variations in knowledge in a sample of students attending the College of Basic Education in Kuwait. A cross-sectional study was conducted using a modified and validated revised version of the General Nutrition Knowledge Questionnaire (GNKQ-R) for UK adults. Univariate and multivariate analyses were performed to determine the association between various factors and nutrition knowledge score. A total of five hundred and ninety-seven students completed the questionnaire. Most respondents (84.1%) had a poor level of nutrition knowledge using original Bloom's cutoff points. Sex, BMI, cooking habits, and who is responsible for preparing food in the household were the main determinants of nutrition knowledge score at p less then 0.05. The mean score of the students was 40.06 ± 9.89 out of 84 points. Females scored significantly higher than males, at 41.10 ± 9.29 and 38.72 ± 10.48, respectively (p = 0.007). Students with a BMI of ≥30 achieved significantly greater scores (mean 42.30 ± 9.41) than those who were underweight, normal, or overweight (p less then 0.001). Students who stated that they always cook their own food achieved significantly greater scores (mean 43.69 ± 9.58) than those who did not (p = 0.025). Students who stated that they depend on the housekeeper for food preparation achieved significantly lower scores (mean 38.86 ± 10.13) than those who prepare their own food or depend on their relatives to prepare food (p = 0.042). Poor nutrition knowledge was found among prospective teachers studying in the College of Basic Education. This must be rectified for the effective implementation of nutrition education programs in schools.
Altered lipid profiles have consistently been linked to cerebrovascular events. Ischemic stroke (IS) was a common comorbid condition established in type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). The apolipoprotein E (ApoE) gene which has a notably critical function in lipoprotein metabolism is believed as one of the potential candidate genes susceptible to IS complications in T2DM. This research aimed to determine the association of apolipoprotein E gene polymorphism with lipid profile and IS risk in T2DM patients.
This case-control study involved a total of 60 diabetic participants divided into two groups with and without IS. ApoE was genotyped using PCR and sequencing analysis.

Body composition was measured using BIA method by means of body fat monitor. Mean differences of the body composition measures were analysed by ANOVA. Stepwise multiple regressions were done with CVD risk variables as dependent and body composition profiles as ing in a serious public health threat, even in traditional societies. The mean deviation value of standard automated perimetry was used to classify the glaucoma cases. We modeled 56 convolutional neural networks (CNN) with different characteristics and developed an ensemble system to derive the best performance by combining several modeling results.Results The proposed method with an accuracy of 88.1% and an average area under the receiver operating characteristic of 0.975 demonstrates significantly better performance to classify glaucoma stages compared to the best single CNN model that has an accuracy of 85.2% and an average area under the receiver operating characteristic of 0.950. The false negative is the least adjacent misprediction, and it is less in the proposed method than in the best single CNN model.Conclusions The method of averaging multiple CNN models can better classify glaucoma stages by using fundus photographs than a single CNN model. Given the importance of ethnicity, the present multi-ethnic study was conducted to find out the differences in body composition patterning and its influence on CVD risk variables. . Owing to considerable ethnic heterogeneity among Asian Indians the study was performed to determine the association of variability between body composition and CVD risk factors at the micro-level among different tribes by sex, province, and generation. Nine tribes from three different states (provinces) were considered. Anthropometric measurements, body composition, adiposity, blood pressure, and fasting blood glucose was measured using standard technique. Body composition was measured using BIA method by means of body fat monitor. Mean differences of the body composition measures were analysed by ANOVA. Stepwise multiple regressions were done with CVD risk variables as dependent and body composition profiles as ing in a serious public health threat, even in traditional societies. The mean deviation value of standard automated perimetry was used to classify the glaucoma cases. We modeled 56 convolutional neural networks (CNN) with different characteristics and developed an ensemble system to derive the best performance by combining several modeling results.Results The proposed method with an accuracy of 88.1% and an average area under the receiver operating characteristic of 0.975 demonstrates significantly better performance to classify glaucoma stages compared to the best single CNN model that has an accuracy of 85.2% and an average area under the receiver operating characteristic of 0.950. The false negative is the least adjacent misprediction, and it is less in the proposed method than in the best single CNN model.Conclusions The method of averaging multiple CNN models can better classify glaucoma stages by using fundus photographs than a single CNN model. California's Office of Environmental Health Hazard Assessment was tasked with conducting risk assessments for United States Food and Drug Administration-approved food dyes relative to neurobehavioral concerns. The purpose of this assessment was to evaluate the evidence for neurodevelopment effects based on three streams of evidence 1) studies identified by OEHHA for consideration in a quantitative risk assessment; 2) studies relevant to understanding mechanisms of neurobehavioral effects; 3) an in silico assessment of the bioavailability of USFDA-approved food dyes. The results indicate a lack of adequate or consistent evidence of neurological effects, supported by a lack of bioavailability and brain penetration predicted by the in silico assessment. Further, the mechanistic evidence supports a lack of activity from in vitro neurotransmitter assays, and a lack of evidence to support molecular initiating events or key events in adverse outcome pathways associated with neurodevelopmental effects, supporting a lack of biological plausibility for neurobehavioral effects following food exposures to colors. These conclusions are consistent with other authoritative bodies, such as JECFA and EFSA, that have determined (i) other effects are more appropriate for estimating acceptable daily intakes and (ii) evidence from the neurobehavioral studies lack the strength to be relied upon for quantitative risk assessment.The present research was designed to investigate the effects of simulated gastrointestinal digestion in vitro on the structural characteristics and anti-proliferative activities of polysaccharides from the shells of Juglans regia L. Through measurements of anti-proliferation activities, the results showed that the digested JRP could remarkably inhibit the viabilities of HeLa cells by induction of apoptosis as a result of the excessive ROS accumulation and cell cycle arrest at G2/M phase, all of which were pronouncedly stronger than the ones induced by undigested JRP. The electrochemical glucose sensing performance of the NiFe alloy nanoparticle was studied by cyclic voltammetry and amperometry. The fabricated glucose sensor Ni-Fe hybrid material exhibited many remarkable sensing performances, such as low-response time (4 s), sensitivity (1050 μA mM-1 cm-2), broad linear range (from 10 μM -1 mM), and low limit of detection (LOD) (0.5 μM, S/N = 3). The selectivity, reliability, and stability of the NiFe hybrid material for glucose oxidation were also investigated. All the results demonstrated that the NiFe-PANi/FTO hybrid electrode is very promising for application in electrochemical glucose sensing.
Recent studies suggest mental health in youths is deteriorating. The current policy in the United Kingdom emphasizes the role of schools for mental health promotion and prevention, but little data exist on what aspects of schools influence mental health in pupils. This study explored school-level influences on the mental health of young people in a large school-based sample from the United Kingdom.
Baseline data from a large cluster randomized controlled trial collected between 2016 and 2018 from mainstream secondary schools selected to be representative in relation to their quality rating, size, deprivation, mixed or single-sex pupil population, and country were analyzed. Participants were pupils in their first or second year of secondary school. The study assessed whether school-level factors were associated with pupil mental health.
The study included 26,885 pupils (response rate= 90%; age range, 11‒14 years; 55% female) attending 85 schools in the United Kingdom. This study investigated the effects of two 14-week resistance training protocols with different repetition duration (RD) performed to muscle failure (MF) on gains in strength and muscle hypertrophy as well as on normalized electromyographic (EMG) amplitude and force-angle relationships.
The left and right legs of ten untrained males were assigned to either one of the two protocols (2-s or 6-s RD) incorporating unilateral knee extension exercise. Both protocols were performed with 3-4 sets, 50-60% of the one-repetition maximum (1RM), and 3 min rest. Rectus femoris and vastus lateralis cross-sectional areas (CSA), maximal voluntary isometric contraction (MVIC) at 30
and 90
of knee flexion and 1RM performance were assessed before and after the training period. In addition, normalized EMG amplitude-angle and force-angle relationships were assessed in the 6

experimental sessions.
The 6-s RD protocol induced larger gains in MVIC at 30
of knee angle measurement than the 2-s RD protocol. Increases in MVIC at 90
of knee angle, 1RM, rectus femoris and vastus lateralis CSA were not significant between the 2-s and 6-s RD protocols. Moreover, different normalized EMG amplitude-angle and force-angle values were detected between protocols over most of the angles analyzed.

Numerous molecular studies using comparative approaches between susceptible and resistant snails to S. mansoni infection have helped identify numerous snail key candidates supporting such susceptible/resistant status. The functional approach using RNA interference (RNAi) remains crucial to validate the function of such candidates. CRISPR-Cas systems are still under development in many laboratories, and RNA interference remains the best tool to study B. glabrata snail genetics. Herein, we describe the use of modified small interfering RNA (siRNA) molecules to enhance cell delivery, especially into hemocytes, the snail immune cells. Modification of siRNA with 5' Cholesteryl TriEthylene Glycol (Chol-TEG) promotes cellular uptake by hemocytes, nearly eightfold over that of unmodified siRNA. FACS analysis reveals that more than 50% of hemocytes have internalized Chol-TEG siRNA conjugated to Cy3 fluorophores, 2 hours only after in vivo injection into snails. Chol-TEG siRNA targeting BgTEP1 (ThioEster-containing Protein), a parasite binding protein, reduced BgTEP1 transcript expression by 70-80% compared to control. The level of BgTEP1 protein secreted in the hemolymph was also decreased. Here we propose that one significant challenge is to bridge cross-disciplinary research on tractable model systems in order to address key ecological and evolutionary questions. This first step is crucial to decipher the main drivers of the dynamics and evolution of holobionts and to account for the holobiont concept in applied areas, such as the conservation, management, and exploitation of marine ecosystems and resources, where practical solutions to predict and mitigate the impact of human activities are more important than ever. This study investigated the effects of two 14-week resistance training protocols with different repetition duration (RD) performed to muscle failure (MF) on gains in strength and muscle hypertrophy as well as on normalized electromyographic (EMG) amplitude and force-angle relationships. The left and right legs of ten untrained males were assigned to either one of the two protocols (2-s or 6-s RD) incorporating unilateral knee extension exercise. Both protocols were performed with 3-4 sets, 50-60% of the one-repetition maximum (1RM), and 3 min rest. Rectus femoris and vastus lateralis cross-sectional areas (CSA), maximal voluntary isometric contraction (MVIC) at 30 and 90 of knee flexion and 1RM performance were assessed before and after the training period. In addition, normalized EMG amplitude-angle and force-angle relationships were assessed in the 6 and 39 experimental sessions. The 6-s RD protocol induced larger gains in MVIC at 30 of knee angle measurement than the 2-s RD protocol. Increases in MVIC at 90 of knee angle, 1RM, rectus femoris and vastus lateralis CSA were not significant between the 2-s and 6-s RD protocols. Moreover, different normalized EMG amplitude-angle and force-angle values were detected between protocols over most of the angles analyzed. Performing longer RD could be a more appropriate strategy to provide greater gains in isometric maximal muscle strength at shortened knee positions. The functional approach using RNA interference (RNAi) remains crucial to validate the function of such candidates. CRISPR-Cas systems are still under development in many laboratories, and RNA interference remains the best tool to study B. glabrata snail genetics. Herein, we describe the use of modified small interfering RNA (siRNA) molecules to enhance cell delivery, especially into hemocytes, the snail immune cells. Modification of siRNA with 5' Cholesteryl TriEthylene Glycol (Chol-TEG) promotes cellular uptake by hemocytes, nearly eightfold over that of unmodified siRNA. FACS analysis reveals that more than 50% of hemocytes have internalized Chol-TEG siRNA conjugated to Cy3 fluorophores, 2 hours only after in vivo injection into snails. Chol-TEG siRNA targeting BgTEP1 (ThioEster-containing Protein), a parasite binding protein, reduced BgTEP1 transcript expression by 70-80% compared to control. Most implementations of ptychography on the electron microscope operate in scanning transmission (STEM) mode, where a small focussed probe beam is rapidly scanned across the sample. In this paper we introduce a different approach based on near-field ptychography, where the focussed beam is replaced by a wide-field, structured illumination, realised through a purpose-designed etched Silicon Nitride window. We show that fields of view as large as 100 μm2 can be imaged using the new approach, and that quantitative electron phase images can be reconstructed from as few as nine near-field diffraction pattern measurements.The development of four-dimensional (4D) scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM) using fast detectors has opened-up new avenues for addressing some of longstanding challenges in electron imaging. One of these challenges is how to image severely distorted crystal lattices, such as at a dislocation core. Here we develop a new 4D-STEM technique, called Cepstral STEM, for imaging disordered crystals using electron diffuse scattering. In contrast to analysis based on Bragg diffraction, which measures the average and periodic scattering potential, electron diffuse scattering can detect fluctuations caused by crystal disorder. Local fluctuations of diffuse scattering are captured by scanning electron nanodiffraction (SEND) using a coherent probe. The harmonic signals in electron diffuse scattering are detected through Cepstral analysis and used for imaging. By integrating Cepstral analysis with 4D-STEM, we demonstrate that information about the distortive part of electron scattering potential can be separated and imaged at nm spatial resolution. To determine the clinical and radiographic success of Biodentine® (BD) and Ferric Sulfate (FS) as primary molar pulpotomy materials and to compare their outcomes.
Retrospective data was obtained from the electronic health records (EHR) of a university-based pediatric dental clinic. Participants were enrolled according to specified inclusion and exclusion criteria. Two trained and calibrated examiners evaluated the EHR using validated criteria for clinical and radiographic outcomes. Study data was numerically coded and analyzed. Cohen's Kappa and Chi-square tests were used (p<0.05).
Eighty-three participants (62.7% females, age range two to eight years, average age of 4.5 years) with 102 pulpotomies were enrolled. FS was used in 78% (n=79) and BD in 22% (n=23) of the cases. Follow-up periods ranged from six to 36 months (mean of 17 months). BD showed 100% clinical and radiographic success, while FS demonstrated 84% clinical and 70% radiographic success. The two groups were compared at one year with no statistically significant differences. At 18 months, BD outperformed FS clinically (p=.012) and radiographically (p=.001). Intra-rater and inter-rater agreement were κ>0.88.
Both materials can be recommended for clinical practice, however BD may be the preferred choice for its better outcomes at 18 months.

The aim of this study was to thoroughly phenotype a group of chronic tension-type headache (CTTH) patients.
Fifteen CTTH patients diagnosed according to the ICHD-3 and 15 healthy controls were included in this study. Furthermore, 70 healthy controls were included to establish normative values. Quantitative sensory testing (QST), including temporal summation of pain (TSP), conditioned pain modulation (CPM) and psychological and sleep variables were assessed in a single session. https://www.selleckchem.com/products/CHR-2797(Tosedostat).html TSP and CPM were then combined to build pain modulation profiles (PMP) for each individual.
No difference was found between groups for PMP, TSP and CPM. However, 10 CTTH patients showed a pronociceptive PMP, with 8 related to a deficient CPM and two to both a deficient CPM and increased TSP. Increased cold detection thresholds were the most common sensory disturbance found in CTTH patients. Significant differences were seen between groups for pain catastrophizing, depression and sleep quality although not all patient's scores were above the clinically meaningful cut-offs.
In summary, CTTH patients presented with different PMP. These PMP may be related to increased TSP, deficient CPM, alterations in thermal detection that may be related to autonomic dysregulation or a combination of all three. Overall, this suggests that due to their heterogeneous pathophysiology, CTTH patients should be managed according to their underlying pathophysiology and not with a one-size fits all approach.

Recently, several researchers reported an association between osteoarthritis and dry eye syndrome (DES), and suggested that they may be related to central sensitization. We investigated the association between DES, osteoarthritis pain, and radiographic severity.

Osteoarthritis-associated radiographic changes were evaluated by trained radiologists. Multivariable logistic regression was performed to examine the relationship between osteoarthritis pain, radiographic severity, and DES. The odds ratios (ORs) of DES were analyzed in accordance with the presence of osteoarthritis-associated factors.
Radiographic knee OA was significantly associated with lower ORs for diagnosed/self-reported DES (OR = 0.80, P-value = 0.046 for diagnosed DES; OR = 0.84, P-value = 0.034 for symptoms of DES). Knee pain or stiffness were significantly associated with higher ORs for diagnoscentral sensitization may be closely associated with DES.This study aimed to test and compare two novel dental mini-implant designs to support overdentures with a commercial model, regarding the stress distribution, by photoelastic analysis. After including the mini-implants in a photoelastic resin, they were subjected to a static load of 100 N under two situations axial and inclined model (30°). The fringe orders (n), that represents the intensity of stresses were analyzed around the mini-implants body and quantified using Tardy's method that calculates the maximum shear stress (τ) value in each point selected. In axial models, less stress was observed in the cervical third mini-implants, mainly in G1 and G2. In inclined models (30°), higher stresses were generated on the opposite side of the load application, mainly in the cervical third of G2 and G3. All mini-implant models presented lower tensions in the cervical third compared with the middle and apical third. The new mini-implants tested (G1 and G2) showed lower stresses than the G3 in the cervical third under axial load, while loading in the inclined model generated greater stresses in the cervical of G2.Split septum medical devices are used in tubing for intravenous (IV) fluid administration-an extremely common clinical task. These tubing caps contain a needleless, valveless system that allows fluid to flow directly through the lumen of the catheter but prevents backflow of fluid or blood when the tubing extension is not connected. We experienced complete failure of a needle-free connector extension set with a Luer-access split septum device in multiple patients due to the split septum remaining fused and essentially unsplit despite being connected on both ends. This led to an adverse event in a patient due to repeated unnecessary IV insertion attempts. We investigated the association between DES, osteoarthritis pain, and radiographic severity. A nationwide, cross-sectional study. The Fifth Korean National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey. 8,664 participants in this survey. Osteoarthritis-associated radiographic changes were evaluated by trained radiologists. Multivariable logistic regression was performed to examine the relationship between osteoarthritis pain, radiographic severity, and DES. The odds ratios (ORs) of DES were analyzed in accordance with the presence of osteoarthritis-associated factors. Radiographic knee OA was significantly associated with lower ORs for diagnosed/self-reported DES (OR = 0.80, P-value = 0.046 for diagnosed DES; OR = 0.84, P-value = 0.034 for symptoms of DES). Knee pain or stiffness were significantly associated with higher ORs for diagnoscentral sensitization may be closely associated with DES.This study aimed to test and compare two novel dental mini-implant designs to support overdentures with a commercial model, regarding the stress distribution, by photoelastic analysis. Three different mini-implant designs (Ø 2.0 mm × 10 mm) were tested G1-experimental threaded (design with threads and 3 longitudinal and equidistant self-cutting chamfers), G2-experimental helical (design with 2 long self-cutting chamfers in the helical arrangement), and G3-Intra-Lock® System. After including the mini-implants in a photoelastic resin, they were subjected to a static load of 100 N under two situations axial and inclined model (30°). The fringe orders (n), that represents the intensity of stresses were analyzed around the mini-implants body and quantified using Tardy's method that calculates the maximum shear stress (τ) value in each point selected. In axial models, less stress was observed in the cervical third mini-implants, mainly in G1 and G2. In inclined models (30°), higher stresses were generated on the opposite side of the load application, mainly in the cervical third of G2 and G3. All mini-implant models presented lower tensions in the cervical third compared with the middle and apical third. The new mini-implants tested (G1 and G2) showed lower stresses than the G3 in the cervical third under axial load, while loading in the inclined model generated greater stresses in the cervical of G2.Split septum medical devices are used in tubing for intravenous (IV) fluid administration-an extremely common clinical task. These tubing caps contain a needleless, valveless system that allows fluid to flow directly through the lumen of the catheter but prevents backflow of fluid or blood when the tubing extension is not connected. We experienced complete failure of a needle-free connector extension set with a Luer-access split septum device in multiple patients due to the split septum remaining fused and essentially unsplit despite being connected on both ends. This led to an adverse event in a patient due to repeated unnecessary IV insertion attempts.
