Non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI) has a lifetime prevalence of 17% in adolescents in the general population and up to 74% in adolescents with psychiatric disorders. Current research on skin tissue engineering has been focusing on novel therapies for the effective management of chronic wounds. A critical aspect is to develop matrices that promote growth and uniform distribution of cells across the wound area, and at the same time offer protection, as well as deliver drugs that help wound healing and tissue regeneration. In this context, we aimed at developing electrospun scaffolds that could serve as carriers for the bioactive natural products alkannin and shikonin (A/S).
A series of polymeric nanofibers composed of cellulose acetate (CA) or poly(ε-caprolactone) (PCL) and varying ratios of a mixture of A/S derivatives, has been successfully fabricated and their physico-chemical and biological properties have been explored.
Scanning electron microscopy revealed a uniform and bead-free morphology for CA scaffolds, while for PCL beads along the fibers were observed. The 'Melatonin for Anxiety prior to General anaesthesia In Children' (MAGIC) trial was designed to compare midazolam and melatonin as pre-medications for anxious children (aged five to fourteen), undergoing day-case surgical procedures under general anaesthesia. Low recruitment is a challenge for many trials, particularly paediatric trials and those in 'emergency' settings. A qualitative study as part of MAGIC aimed to gather stakeholder perspectives on barriers and enablers to recruitment.
Sixteen stakeholders from six sites participated in semi-structured interviews about their experiences of setting up the MAGIC trial and recruiting patients as part of the internal pilot. Data was analysed using framework analysis.
Participants identified barriers and enablers to recruitment. Barriers and enablers related to the study, participants, the population of anxious children, practitioners, collaboration with other health professionals, ethics, specific settings and the context of surgical day units and the health professionals. Using rapid ethnography during set-up or an internal pilot to focus on how the protocol will be or has been operationalised in practice may help identify issues. Allowing time to reflect on the findings of internal pilots and implement necessary changes could facilitate higher recruitment during the main phase of a trial.

The development of secondary resistance (SR) in metastatic colorectal cancer (mCRC) treated with anti-epidermal growth factor receptor (anti-EGFR) antibodies is not fully understood at the molecular level. Here we tested in vivo selection of anti-EGFR SR tumors in CRC patient-derived xenograft (PDX) models as a strategy for a molecular dissection of SR mechanisms.
We analyzed 21 KRAS, NRAS, BRAF, and PI3K wildtype CRC patient-derived xenograft (PDX) models for their anti-EGFR sensitivity. Furthermore, 31 anti-EGFR SR tumors were generated via chronic in vivo treatment with cetuximab. A multi-omics approach was employed to address molecular primary and secondary resistance mechanisms. Gene set enrichment analyses were used to uncover SR pathways. Targeted therapy of SR PDX models was applied to validate selected SR pathways.

The Lombardy region has been the Italian region most affected by the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic in 2020. The emergency healthcare system was under deep stress throughout the past year due to the admission of COVID-19 patients to the emergency department (ED) and had to be thoroughly reorganized.
We performed a retrospective descriptive analysis of patients admitted into the ED recorded in the Lombardy online regional portal called EUOL (Emergenza e Urgenza OnLine). We compared the data registered in the EUOL with the patients admitted to the EDs from 1 January 2019 to 31 December 2019 and from 1 January 2020 to 31 December 2020.
The number of admissions to the ED decreased by 32.5% in 2020 compared with 2019, reaching the lowest number in March and April. However, the percentage of patients hospitalized after ED significantly increased in 2020 compared with 2019 (P<0.0001), reflecting the management of patients with a more severe clinical condition. More patients arrived at the ED by ambulance in 2020 (21.7% in 2020 versus 15.1% in 2019; P<0.0001), particularly during March and April.

Although Taxol is known to sensitize cells by stabilizing microtubules, its ability to cause DNA damage in peripheral blood lymphocytes and to induce oxidative stress and apoptosis indicates that Taxol may have other modes of cytotoxic action. This study focuses on identifying the additional targets of Taxol that may contribute to its multifaceted cell killing property, using Saccharomyces cerevisiae. We identified known human and animal pathogens and mosquito parasites belonging to a wide range of taxa, as well as DNA sequences from previously uncharacterized organisms. Our results also revealed that analysis of the content of an entire trap could be an efficient approach to monitor and identify rare vector-borne pathogens in large surveillance studies. Improving the effectiveness of anti-cancer immunotherapy remains a major clinical challenge. Cytotoxic T cell infiltration is crucial for immune-mediated tumor rejection, however, the suppressive tumor microenvironment impedes their recruitment, activation, maturation and function. Nevertheless, solid tumors can harbor specialized lymph node vasculature and immune cell clusters that are organized into tertiary lymphoid structures (TLS). These TLS support naïve T cell infiltration and intratumoral priming. In many human cancers, their presence is a positive prognostic factor, and importantly, predictive for responsiveness to immune checkpoint blockade. Thus, therapeutic induction of TLS is an attractive concept to boost anti-cancer immunotherapy. However, our understanding of how cancer-associated TLS could be initiated is rudimentary. Exciting new reagents which induce TLS in preclinical cancer models provide mechanistic insights into the exquisite stromal orchestration of TLS formation, a process often associated with a more functional or "normalized" tumor vasculature and fueled by LIGHT/LTα/LTβ, TNFα and CC/CXC chemokine signaling. These emerging insights provide innovative opportunities to induce and shape TLS in the tumor microenvironment to improve immunotherapies.
Autoimmune diseases (ADs) are characterized by immune-mediated tissue damage, in which angiogenesis is a prominent pathogenic mechanism. Vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), an angiogenesis modulator, is significantly elevated in several ADs including rheumatoid arthritis (RA), systemic sclerosis (SSc), and systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). We determined whether circulating VEGF levels were associated with ADs based on pooled evidence.
The analyses included 165 studies from the PubMed, EMBASE, Cochrane Library, and Web of Science databases and fulfilled the study criteria. Comparisons of circulating VEGF levels between patients with ADs and healthy controls were performed by determining pooled standard mean differences (SMDs) with 95% confidence intervals (CIs) in a random-effect model using STATA 16.0. Subgroup, sensitivity, and meta-regression analyses were performed to determine heterogeneity and to test robustness.

Improving the effectiveness of anti-cancer immunotherapy remains a major clinical challenge. Cytotoxic T cell infiltration is crucial for immune-mediated tumor rejection, however, the suppressive tumor microenvironment impedes their recruitment, activation, maturation and function. Nevertheless, solid tumors can harbor specialized lymph node vasculature and immune cell clusters that are organized into tertiary lymphoid structures (TLS). These TLS support naïve T cell infiltration and intratumoral priming. In many human cancers, their presence is a positive prognostic factor, and importantly, predictive for responsiveness to immune checkpoint blockade. Thus, therapeutic induction of TLS is an attractive concept to boost anti-cancer immunotherapy. However, our understanding of how cancer-associated TLS could be initiated is rudimentary. We determined whether circulating VEGF levels were associated with ADs based on pooled evidence. The analyses included 165 studies from the PubMed, EMBASE, Cochrane Library, and Web of Science databases and fulfilled the study criteria. Comparisons of circulating VEGF levels between patients with ADs and healthy controls were performed by determining pooled standard mean differences (SMDs) with 95% confidence intervals (CIs) in a random-effect model using STATA 16.0. Subgroup, sensitivity, and meta-regression analyses were performed to determine heterogeneity and to test robustness. Here, we performed three experiments to investigate the behavioral response of predator naïve Pleurodema thaul tadpoles to repeated stimulation with two predation risk cues (injured conspecific and predator fed cues) which a priori provide different information regarding risk. Experiment 1 showed that P. thaul tadpoles habituate the antipredator response when undergo predation risk chemical cues from injured conspecific and that response is long term. Experiment 2 showed that P. thaul tadpoles did not habituate their antipredator response when exposed to cues derived from an event of nymph odonate preying on P. thaul tadpoles (predator fed cues). Experiment 3 specifically evaluated the risk imposed by each of the risk cues used in Experiment 1 and Experiment 2 and showed that the degree of perceived risk in tadpoles appear to be similar in a single experience with any risk stimuli. These derived test lists combined stimuli from multiple training lists in ambiguous ways, sometimes changing their order relative to training. We found that subjects displayed strong preferences when presented with novel test pairs, even when those pairs were drawn from different training lists. These preferences were helpful when test pairs had an ordering congruent with their ranks during training, but yielded consistently below-chance performance when pairs had an incongruent order relative to training. This behavior can be explained by the joint contributions of transitive inference and another heuristic that we refer to as "positional inference." Positional inferences play a complementary role to transitive inferences in facilitating choices between novel pairs of stimuli. The theoretical framework that best explains both transitive and positional inferences is a spatial model that represents both the position of each stimulus and its uncertainty. A computational implementation of this framework yields accurate predictions about both correct responses and errors on derived lists.
Cold-active lipases which show high specific activity at low temperatures are attractive in industrial applications in terms of product stability and energy saving. We aimed to identify novel cold-active lipase suitable for oleates synthesis and bread making.
A novel lipase gene (RmLipA) from Rhizopus microsporus was cloned and heterologously expressed in Pichia pastoris. The encoding sequence displayed 75% identity to the lipase from R. niveus. The highest extracellular lipase activity of 7931 U/mL was achieved in a 5-L fermentation. The recombinant enzyme (RmLipA) was optimally active at pH 8.0 and 20-25°C, respectively, and stable over a wide pH range of 2.0-11.0. The enzyme was a cold-active lipase, exhibiting > 80% of its maximal activity at 0°C. RmLipA was a sn-1,3 regioselective lipase, and preferred to hydrolyze pNP esters and triglycerides with relatively long chain fatty acids. RmLipA synthesized various oleates using oleic acid and different alcohols as substrates (> 95%). Moreover, it significantly improved the quality of bread by increasing its specific volume (21.7%) and decreasing its crumb firmness (28.6%).

To produce flavonol and flavone 6-C-glucosides by bioconversion using recombinant Escherichia coli expressing a C-glucosyltransferase from wasabi (WjGT1).
Escherichia coli expressing WjGT1 (Ec-WjGT1) converted flavones (apigenin and luteolin) and flavonols (quercetin and kaempferol) into their 6-C-glucosides in M9 minimal media supplemented with glucose, and released these products into the culture media. Ec-WjGT1 system also converts a flavanone (naringenin) into its C-glucoside at a conversion rate of 60% in 6h. For scale-up production, apigenin, kaempferol, and quercetin were sequentially fed into the Ec-WjGT1 system at concentrations of 20-50µM every 15-60min, and the system was then able to produce isovitexin, kaempferol 6-C-glucoside, and quercetin 6-C-glucoside at an 89-99% conversion rate.

Although informational benefits were highlighted from programme empowerment sessions, very few advocacy groups were subsequently established. .OBJECTIVE Progressive multifocal leukoencephalopathy (PML) is a fatal demyelinating disease of the central nervous system, caused by reactivation of John Cunningham polyomavirus, affecting mainly patients in an immunocompromised state. Recently, drug-associated PML is gaining attention as more cases of PML in connection with the use of various immunomodulatory drugs emerge. Over the last couple of years, sporadic reports have occurred about a possible association between PML and the use of a new immunomodulatory drug, ibrutinib (Imbruvica), primarily indicated for the treatment of various B-cell malignancies. CASE REPORT Herein, we report a case of a 62-year-old female patient with bilateral mantle cell lymphoma of conjunctiva diagnosed at IVA clinical stage (according to the Ann Arbor staging of lymphomas) of the disease. As a first line of treatment, the patient was given 6 cycles of rituximab-based chemotherapy followed by a complete remission. Seven years later, the patient relapsed, at which point the treatment with ibrutinib was initiated. Three weeks after the initial dosage, the patient started to show signs of progressive neurological symptomatology and died 4 months thereafter due to bilateral bronchopneumonia. Due to unspecific MRI signs and negative PCR results, the diagnosis of PML was confirmed only postmortem. CONCLUSION This case report demonstrates a possible severe adverse effect of the immunomodulatory drug ibrutinib and the importance of a multidisciplinary approach in its diagnosis. Since PML is a rare but highly fatal disease, it is of utmost importance to be aware of the possible connection with the use of this drug to prevent missed or delayed diagnosis, considering that timely therapeutic intervention is crucial for improved prognosis.
.OBJECTIVE Respiratory alkalosis (RA) and dilutional hyperchloremic acidosis (DHA) are the most common acid-base balance (ABB) disorders in patients with liver cirrhosis. The aims of this study were to clarify whether RA develops in relation to DHA via respiratory compensation of metabolic acidosis and whether spironolactone in combination with low-dose furosemide - diuretics known to ameliorate DHA - positively affects RA in liver cirrhosis patients. MATERIALS AND METHODS 59 patients with advanced cirrhosis were divided into two groups. Group D consisted of individuals (urine sodium concentration (UNa+) > 20 mmol/L) who responded to combination therapy consisting of spironolactone and low-dose furosemide. The non-D group consisted of individuals (UNa+ ≤ 20 mmol/L) who either did not respond to the treatment or who were not administered it. In both groups, we examined serum and urine concentrations of electrolytes and ABB parameters, including SNa+-SCl- and SNa+/SCl- values. RESULTS In group D, we found a statistically significant relationship between pCO2 and SHCO3- r = 0.756 (p less then 0.001) and between pCO2 and SNa+-SCl- r = 0.522 (p = 0.001). Neither Salb nor the corrected anion gap were associated with changes in SHCO3- or pCO2 values. Although SHCO3- values were normal, abnormal pCO2 values were observed in one third of group D patients. Based on multivariable analysis, SHCO3- proved to be a statistically significant influencing factor on pCO2 values. CONCLUSION DHA contributes to the development of RA in individuals with liver cirrhosis. Reducing DHA by means of effective diuretic therapy comprising spironolactone and furosemide has a beneficial effect on RA in such patients.
.An elderly Japanese woman with bilateral renal artery occlusion who developed massive proteinuria after unilateral percutaneous transluminal renal angioplasty (PTRA) is reported. She had a history of percutaneous coronary intervention and subsequently developed refractory hypertension. She was diagnosed with renovascular hypertension caused by bilateral total occlusion of the renal arteries, and underwent PTRA for the left renal artery. Nephrotic-range proteinuria from the left kidney, confirmed by split urine collection from each kidney under cytoscopic examination, and low-grade fever with positive C-reactive protein became obvious after PTRA. Giant cell arteritis (GCA) was also diagnosed by positive findings on fluorodeoxyglucose-positron emission tomography in the common carotid arteries, subclavian arteries, and aorta, but not in the renal arteries. Administration of corticosteroid and angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitor decreased the proteinuria (> 9 - 2 g/day). .BACKGROUND The use of a catheter for hemodialysis is associated with a 5-fold increased risk of septicemia. Early detection of catheter-related bloodstrean infection (CRBSI) may decrease morbidity and mortality, but the benefits of systematic blood cultures have not been demonstrated. MATERIALS AND METHODS We retrospectively studied the blood culture results of patients who had been dialyzed with a tunneled jugular catheter for more than 1 month in a dialysis unit from January to December 2015. Systematic monthly catheter blood cultures were taken from the heparin lock solutions in the arterial and venous branches, at the beginning or end of the session. CRBSI was assessed using patient symptoms (fever, chills, hemodynamic instability) and positive catheter blood cultures. RESULTS 75 patients were included. We analyzed the results of 577 systematic catheter blood cultures. 27 (5%) were positive, including 23 from patients who did not develop CRBSI in the following month. For the latter, there was a predominance of coagulase-negative staphylococci.

.OBJECTIVE Progressive multifocal leukoencephalopathy (PML) is a fatal demyelinating disease of the central nervous system, caused by reactivation of John Cunningham polyomavirus, affecting mainly patients in an immunocompromised state. Recently, drug-associated PML is gaining attention as more cases of PML in connection with the use of various immunomodulatory drugs emerge. Over the last couple of years, sporadic reports have occurred about a possible association between PML and the use of a new immunomodulatory drug, ibrutinib (Imbruvica), primarily indicated for the treatment of various B-cell malignancies. CASE REPORT Herein, we report a case of a 62-year-old female patient with bilateral mantle cell lymphoma of conjunctiva diagnosed at IVA clinical stage (according to the Ann Arbor staging of lymphomas) of the disease. As a first line of treatment, the patient was given 6 cycles of rituximab-based chemotherapy followed by a complete remission. Seven years later, the patient relapsed, at which point the treatment with ibrutinib was initiated. Three weeks after the initial dosage, the patient started to show signs of progressive neurological symptomatology and died 4 months thereafter due to bilateral bronchopneumonia. Due to unspecific MRI signs and negative PCR results, the diagnosis of PML was confirmed only postmortem. CONCLUSION This case report demonstrates a possible severe adverse effect of the immunomodulatory drug ibrutinib and the importance of a multidisciplinary approach in its diagnosis. Since PML is a rare but highly fatal disease, it is of utmost importance to be aware of the possible connection with the use of this drug to prevent missed or delayed diagnosis, considering that timely therapeutic intervention is crucial for improved prognosis.
.OBJECTIVE Respiratory alkalosis (RA) and dilutional hyperchloremic acidosis (DHA) are the most common acid-base balance (ABB) disorders in patients with liver cirrhosis. The aims of this study were to clarify whether RA develops in relation to DHA via respiratory compensation of metabolic acidosis and whether spironolactone in combination with low-dose furosemide - diuretics known to ameliorate DHA - positively affects RA in liver cirrhosis patients. MATERIALS AND METHODS 59 patients with advanced cirrhosis were divided into two groups. Group D consisted of individuals (urine sodium concentration (UNa+) > 20 mmol/L) who responded to combination therapy consisting of spironolactone and low-dose furosemide. The non-D group consisted of individuals (UNa+ ≤ 20 mmol/L) who either did not respond to the treatment or who were not administered it. In both groups, we examined serum and urine concentrations of electrolytes and ABB parameters, including SNa+-SCl- and SNa+/SCl- values. RESULTS In group D, we found a statistically significant relationship between pCO2 and SHCO3- r = 0.756 (p less then 0.001) and between pCO2 and SNa+-SCl- r = 0.522 (p = 0.001). Neither Salb nor the corrected anion gap were associated with changes in SHCO3- or pCO2 values. Although SHCO3- values were normal, abnormal pCO2 values were observed in one third of group D patients. Based on multivariable analysis, SHCO3- proved to be a statistically significant influencing factor on pCO2 values. CONCLUSION DHA contributes to the development of RA in individuals with liver cirrhosis. Reducing DHA by means of effective diuretic therapy comprising spironolactone and furosemide has a beneficial effect on RA in such patients.
.An elderly Japanese woman with bilateral renal artery occlusion who developed massive proteinuria after unilateral percutaneous transluminal renal angioplasty (PTRA) is reported. She had a history of percutaneous coronary intervention and subsequently developed refractory hypertension. She was diagnosed with renovascular hypertension caused by bilateral total occlusion of the renal arteries, and underwent PTRA for the left renal artery. Nephrotic-range proteinuria from the left kidney, confirmed by split urine collection from each kidney under cytoscopic examination, and low-grade fever with positive C-reactive protein became obvious after PTRA. Giant cell arteritis (GCA) was also diagnosed by positive findings on fluorodeoxyglucose-positron emission tomography in the common carotid arteries, subclavian arteries, and aorta, but not in the renal arteries. Administration of corticosteroid and angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitor decreased the proteinuria (> 9 - 2 g/day). We aimed to investigate the effect of caffeic acid phenethyl ester (CAPE) on retinal apoptosis and oxidative stress parameters in streptozotocin (STZ) induced diabetic rat model.
This study included 3 groups; control, STZ, and STZ + CAPE. The rats in STZ, and STZ + CAPE groups were injected with STZ (35 mg/kg, i.p.) for induction of diabetes. In the STZ + CAPE group, 10 µmol/kg of CAPE were intraperitoneally injected for 4 weeks. Control and STZ groups were given only intraperitoneal vehicle (saline). Rats were anaesthetized and sacrificed on the 4th week of the experiment. Total anti-oxidant status (TAS), and total oxidant status (TOS) were measured on the dissected retinal tissues. Oxidative stress index (OSI) was also calculated. Fellow eyes were used for histopathologic evaluation with caspase-3 and matrix metalloproteinase-2 (MMP-2) and MMP-9 evaluation.

However, the specific mechanisms that determine the fate of BMSCs remain elusive. MicroRNA-133a (miR-133a), a highly conserved microRNA, was investigated under both in vitro and in vivo conditions. In the in vitro study, cell proliferation, cell apoptosis, and osteoblast/adipocyte differentiation of BMSCs as a result of overexpression or knockdown of miR-133a was investigated. In the in vivo study, the ovariectomy (OVX) model was applied on ****, with further treatment of the models with BMSC-specific miR-133a antagomir through femur intramedullary injection. Microcomputed tomography scanning and histological analysis of the proximal and middle femur were performed to evaluate the morphological changes. The results revealed that overexpression of miR-133a suppressed cell proliferation, cell viability, and osteoblast differentiation of BMSCs, but increased adipocyte differentiation. We also found that FGFR1, an important upstream regulator of mitogen-activated protein kinase/extracellular signal-regulated kinase (MAPK/ERK) signal pathway, was a major target of miR-133a. We also recorded that BMSC-specific knockdown of miR-133a attenuates bone loss in OVX ****. Our study suggested that miR-133a played an important role in maintaining the viability and balance between osteoblast and adipocyte differentiation of BMSCs through the MAPK/ERK signaling pathway by targeting FGFR1.
In osteoarthritis, chondrocytes tend to acquire a hypertrophic phenotype, which contributes to the modification of the extracellular matrix, resulting in permanent cartilage changes. In mouse chondrocytes, pro-inflammatory macrophages and pro-inflammatory cytokines have been shown to stimulate hypertrophy via the activation of the nuclear factor kappa B (NF-κB) pathway. Whether or not this also occurs in human chondrocytes remains unclear. We therefore aimed to investigate whether hypertrophy-like responses in human cartilage are driven mainly by intrinsic inflammatory signaling or shaped by specific macrophage populations.

Importantly, the size of individuals' social network can influence their experience, and consequently, how they process language. In the case of voice recognition, having a larger social network might provide more variable input and thus enhance the ability to recognise new voices. On the other hand, learning to recognise voices is more demanding and less beneficial for people with a larger social network as they have more speakers to learn yet spend less time with each. This paper tests whether social network size influences voice recognition, and if so, in which direction. Native Dutch speakers listed their social network and performed a voice recognition task. Results showed that people with larger social networks were poorer at learning to recognise voices. Experiment 2 replicated the results with a British sample and English stimuli. Experiment 3 showed that the effect does not generalise to voice recognition in an unfamiliar language suggesting that social network size influences attention to the linguistic rather than non-linguistic markers that differentiate speakers. The studies thus show that our social network size influences our inclination to learn speaker-specific patterns in our environment, and consequently, the development of skills that rely on such learned patterns, such as voice recognition.

Bluetongue virus (BTV) causes an infectious disease called bluetongue, a vector-borne viral disease of ruminants, which has major implications and causes severe economic damage due to its effect on livestock. These economic costs are mostly ascribed to the trade restrictions imposed during the epidemic period. In August 2014, an epidemic of bluetongue occurred in the island of Lesvos, Greece. In this paper, we describe a bluetongue virus serotype 4 (BTV-4) epidemic and utilize Bayesian epidemic models to capture the spatio-temporal spread of the disease. The results showed strong spatial autocorrelations, with BTV being more likely to spread between farms located nearby. The spatial modeling results proposed a certain spatial radius (~12km) around the onset of a similar epidemic for imposing restrictions on animal movement, which can be sufficient for the control of the disease and limit economic damage. The study highlights the role of tumor diameter and extent in transition prediction. This retrospective cohort analysis of 322 patients with newly diagnosed non-muscle-invasive bladder cancer (NMIBC) assesses the concordance and accuracy of predicting recurrence and progression by EAU-recommended tools (EAU risk groups, EORTC, and CUETO). One-year and five-year c-indices ranged from 0.55 to 0.66 for recurrence and from 0.72 to 0.82 for progression. AUCROC of predictions ranged from 0.46 for 1-year recurrence risk based on CUETO groups, ORTC provided the best recurrence and progression prediction for a mixed population of patients treated with, or without BCG, and without immediate postoperative chemotherapy. © 2020 The Authors. We aim to investigate the prognostic value of clinical and cytogenetic features and propose a new risk stratification in AML-M5 children. METHODS We included 132 children with AML-M5. Overall survival (OS) and progression-free survival (PFS) were documented. Cox regression was performed to evaluate the potential risk factors of prognosis. RESULTS The 5-year-OS was 46.0% (95% confidence intervals, 41.6%-50.4%) in all patients. There was significantly lower OS in the age ≤ 3 years old (P = .009) and hyperleukocytosis (P less then .001). The FMS-like tyrosine kinase 3 (FLT3)-internal tandem duplication (ITD) and MLL-rearrangement carriers were associated with fewer survivors in all patients (37.1% and 36.7%) and chemotherapy-only group (19.0% and 35.0%). ANIMALS STUDIED Retrospective medical record review of 1204 cats and prospective screening of 195 cats. PROCEDURES The study consisted of three parts (a) Survey responses were collected from 20 veterinarians, who perform high-quality high-volume spay-neuter (HQHVSN) in both shelter and public clinic settings; (b) medical records of 1204 cats were analyzed retrospectively over a 14-month time period; and (c) ophthalmic examinations, including tonometry, were performed prospectively on 195 cats before and after sterilization surgery over 8 weeks. RESULTS Nine of 20 surveyed veterinarians reported having witnessed hyphema in cats following sterilization surgery. Retrospective review of 1204 medical record and prospective screening of 195 cats showed that three juvenile (1 year of age) cats, respectively. CONCLUSIONS Survey responses and three observed cases confirm the existence of feline post-sterilization hyphema with an estimated incidence of 0.2%. Although OHP solar cells exhibit high power conversion efficiencies, their relatively poor stability is a significant obstacle to their practical use. We report that the chemical stability of OHP solar cells with respect to both moisture and heat can be improved by adding a small amount of Ag to the precursor. Ag doping increases the size of the OHP grains and reduces the size of the amorphous intergranular regions at the grain boundaries, and thereby hinders the infiltration of moisture into the OHP films and their thermal degradation. Quantum mechanical simulation reveals that Ag doping increases the energies of both the hydration reaction and heat-induced vacancy formation in OHP crystals. The study also examined if some resources for care are more important than others. This study used baseline Alive & Thrive household surveys from Bangladesh, Vietnam, and Ethiopia. Measures of resources for care were maternal education, knowledge, height, nourishment, mental well-being, decision-making autonomy, employment, support in chores, and perceived instrumental support. Multiple regression analyses were conducted to examine the associations of resources for care with child-feeding practices (exclusive breastfeeding, minimum meal frequency, dietary and diversity), hygiene practices (improved drinking water source, improved sanitation, and cleanliness), health-seeking (full immunization), and family care (psychosocial stimulation and availability of adequate caregiver).

One-year and five-year c-indices ranged from 0.55 to 0.66 for recurrence and from 0.72 to 0.82 for progression. We aim to investigate the prognostic value of clinical and cytogenetic features and propose a new risk stratification in AML-M5 children. METHODS We included 132 children with AML-M5. Overall survival (OS) and progression-free survival (PFS) were documented. Cox regression was performed to evaluate the potential risk factors of prognosis. RESULTS The 5-year-OS was 46.0% (95% confidence intervals, 41.6%-50.4%) in all patients. There was significantly lower OS in the age ≤ 3 years old (P = .009) and hyperleukocytosis (P less then .001). The FMS-like tyrosine kinase 3 (FLT3)-internal tandem duplication (ITD) and MLL-rearrangement carriers were associated with fewer survivors in all patients (37.1% and 36.7%) and chemotherapy-only group (19.0% and 35.0%). ANIMALS STUDIED Retrospective medical record review of 1204 cats and prospective screening of 195 cats. PROCEDURES The study consisted of three parts (a) Survey responses were collected from 20 veterinarians, who perform high-quality high-volume spay-neuter (HQHVSN) in both shelter and public clinic settings; (b) medical records of 1204 cats were analyzed retrospectively over a 14-month time period; and (c) ophthalmic examinations, including tonometry, were performed prospectively on 195 cats before and after sterilization surgery over 8 weeks. RESULTS Nine of 20 surveyed veterinarians reported having witnessed hyphema in cats following sterilization surgery. Retrospective review of 1204 medical record and prospective screening of 195 cats showed that three juvenile (1 year of age) cats, respectively. CONCLUSIONS Survey responses and three observed cases confirm the existence of feline post-sterilization hyphema with an estimated incidence of 0.2%. We report that the chemical stability of OHP solar cells with respect to both moisture and heat can be improved by adding a small amount of Ag to the precursor. Ag doping increases the size of the OHP grains and reduces the size of the amorphous intergranular regions at the grain boundaries, and thereby hinders the infiltration of moisture into the OHP films and their thermal degradation. Quantum mechanical simulation reveals that Ag doping increases the energies of both the hydration reaction and heat-induced vacancy formation in OHP crystals. OBJECTIVE The detailed associations between type 2 diabetes (T2D) and total stroke and magnesium intake as well as the dose-response trend should be updated in a timely manner. RESULTS The prevalence of past 30-day smoking was 23%. More than 63% of current smokers report ever smoking on campus, but less than 10% ever received a warning or a ticket for their violation. Nearly all respondents (92.5%) reported witnessing someone smoking on campus, and 22% reported witnessing someone receiving a ticket. Barriers to policy success include lack of reminders about the policy, lack of support from students and University administrators, and insufficient fines. RNA-sequencing was performed to identify differentially expressed genes in lesional vs. non-lesional palmar epidermal skin from a group of patients with vesicular hand eczema compared to healthy controls. Comprehensive real-time quantitative PCR analyses and immunohistochemistry were used for validation of candidate genes and protein profiles for vesicular hand eczema. Overall, a significant and high expression of genes/proteins involved in keratinocyte host defense and inflammation was found in lesional skin. Furthermore, we detected several molecules, both up or downregulated in lesional skin, which are involved in epidermal differentiation. Immune signalling genes were found to be upregulated in lesional skin, albeit with relatively low expression levels. Non-lesional patient skin showed no significant differences compared to healthy control skin. Lesional vesicular hand eczema skin shows a distinct expression profile compared to non-lesional skin and healthy control skin. Notably, the overall results indicate a large overlap between vesicular hand eczema and earlier reported atopic dermatitis lesional transcriptome profiles, which suggests that treatments for atopic dermatitis could also be effective in (vesicular) hand eczema.

A cross-sectional study was conducted with a sample of 850 nurses from 12 public hospitals in the central and northern regions of Portugal.
Nurse staffing in these hospital units is insufficient, especially in internal medicine units and central hospitals. Nurses' perceptions are in line with the objective data.
The shortage of nurses is a horizontal issue that is especially serious in internal medicine units and central hospitals and a potential threat to the quality of care.
The results stress the need for an urgent leadership intervention in nurse staffing levels in the hospitals analysed in this study. Contextual knowledge about nurse staffing is essential for decision-making and supporting health and human resource management policies.

The #MeToo and #TimesUp movements have emphasized the ubiquity of sexual harassment in health care. Yet, limited studies have explored sexual harassment among male and female nurses and the reasons for not reporting it.
An online cross-sectional survey was conducted using the Sexual Experiences Questionnaire (SEQ) to collect data from 1.264 female nurses and 507 male nurses.
Sixty-seven per cent of female nurses have experienced sexual harassment at least once in their working lives, whereas male nurses' exact figure was 41%. The most common type of sexual harassment for both groups was gender harassment, followed by unwanted sexual attention and sexual coercion. Female nurses experienced more severe adverse consequences, whereas male nurses experienced moderate negative consequences.
Policymakers and hospital managers should create mechanisms to allow victims to report their experiences and establish an independent committee to assess victims' complaints.
