Religious observance was positively associated with psychotic symptoms and disorders [OR = 1.38, 95% CI (1.20-1.58) and OR = 1.25, 95% CI (1.07-1.45)], but negatively associated with social anxiety disorder [OR = 0.87, 95% CI (0.76-0.99)], alcohol use disorders [OR = 0.60, 95% CI (0.51-0.70)], substance use disorders [OR = 0.48, 95% CI (0.38-0.60)] and suicide attempts [OR = 0.80, 95% CI (0.70-0.90)]. Among believers, religious observance was not associated with psychotic outcomes. Religiosity appears to be a complex and bidirectional determinant of psychiatric symptoms and disorders. The aim of the current study was to investigate whether OT can improve the olfactory function of children aged 8 years old. Odour thresholds and odour identification ability were compared between two groups across three separate testing sessions (baseline, 6-week post-baseline, 12-week post-baseline). After the baseline test, the control group (n = 21) completed 6 weeks of bi-daily OT with odourless stimuli, whereas the experiment group (n = 20) completed 6 weeks of bi-daily OT, smelling four different odours (eucalyptus, lemon, clove, rose). A repeated measure analysis of variance was used to test for group differences across the three testing sessions. Six weeks after OT had been completed, participants in the experiment group demonstrated a significant increase in odour identification scores (9.95 to 11.20), compared to the control group who demonstrated no increase (10.48 to 10.48).     To determine whether neurofilament light chain (NfL), a promising serum and cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) biomarker of neuroaxonal damage, predicts functional outcome in preterm infants with neonatal brain injury.

    Our prospective observational study used a sensitive single-molecule array assay to measure serum and CSF NfL concentrations in preterm infants with moderate to severe peri/intraventricular hemorrhage (PIVH). We determined temporal serum and CSF NfL profiles from the initial diagnosis of PIVH until term-equivalent age and their association with clinical and neurodevelopmental outcome until 2years of age assessed by Bayley Scales of Infant Development (3rd edition). We fitted univariate and multivariate logistic regression models to determine risk factors for poor motor and cognitive development.

    The study included 48 infants born at < 32weeks of gestation. Median serum NfL (sNfL) at PIVH diagnosis was 251pg/mL [interquartile range (IQR) 139-379], decreasing markedly until term-equivalent age to 15.7pg/mL (IQR 11.1-33.5). CSF NfL was on average 113-fold higher (IQR 40-211) than corresponding sNfL values. Additional cerebral infarction (n = 25)-but not post-hemorrhagic hydrocephalus requiring external ventricular drainage (n = 29) nor any other impairment-was independently associated with sNfL. Multivariate logistic regression models identified sNfL as an independent predictor of poor motor outcome or death at 1 and 2years.

The product was isostructural to MAF-5 (Zn). The as-prepared MAF-5-CoII NS exhibited high surface area (1155 m2/g), purity, and crystallinity. The MAF-5-CoII NS-modified screen-printed electrode (MAF-5-CoII NS/SPE) was used for nonenzymatic detection of glucose in diluted human blood plasma (BP) samples with phosphate buffer saline (PBS, pH 7.4) and NaOH (0.1 M, pH 13.0) solutions.   • Chronic consumption of a high-fat diet induces obesity and impairs the ultra-structure of organs and tissues. We examined the effect of sodium-glucose cotransporter 2 (SGLT2) inhibitor-dapagliflozin on renal and pancreatic injuries in obese condition. Rats were fed a high-fat diet for 16 weeks to induce obesity. After that, dapagliflozin or vildagliptin, 1.0 or 3.0 mg/kg/day, respectively, was administered by oral gavage for 4 weeks. The effects of dapagliflozin on insulin resistance, kidney autophagy, pancreatic oxidative stress, endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress, inflammation, and apoptosis in high-fat diet-induced obese rats were elucidated. High-fat-diet fed rats demonstrated metabolic abnormalities including increased body weight, visceral fat weight, plasma insulin, plasma cholesterol, homeostasis model assessment (HOMA) index, and TAUCg, indicating the obese-insulin resistant and glucose intolerance conditions. Also, high-fat-diet fed rats exhibited significant pancreatic injury accompanied by decreased kidney autophagy.     Acute suppurative thyroiditis (AST) is a rare but potentially fatal condition which can initially be difficult to distinguish from the more common subacute thyroiditis (SAT). We aim to update understanding of this medical emergency.

    A systematic review over the past 20years was performed on the epidemiology, clinical features, investigations, management and outcomes of AST. All full-text cases of microscopy or culture- proven AST in the English literature were included.

    200 cases of AST have been described in 148 articles from January 2000 - January 2020. Bacterial AST is most common, often presenting with neck pain (89%) and fever (82%). Immunosuppression and pyriform sinus fistula are the most common causes, most often due to gram-positive aerobes. Transient hyperthyroidism is common (42%). Aspiration and antibiotics are becoming a more common treatment. Overall mortality was 7.8%. Tuberculous and fungal AST are less likely to present with fever and neck pain. Fungal AST is more common in immunosuppressed individuals (31%) and has a high overall mortality (33%). Tuberculous AST is more common in TB endemic areas.

Clinicians need to consider AST when they assess patients with thyroiditis who are systemically unwell, have high fever, high white cell count and c-reactive protein, tender neck and abnormal neck imaging. Cognitive vulnerability to stress-induced cortisol may explain risk and resilience. The current study aimed to elucidate a psychobiological pathway linking stress to altered memory for affective words among youth with and without exposure to ELS. One hundred and fifteen youth (ages 9-16, 47% female) were randomized either to a psychosocial stressor or a control condition. Immediately following the stress or control condition, participants completed a memory task for affective words. Change in salivary cortisol from immediately before to 25 min after stress onset were used to predict memory for affective words. Exposure to the acute laboratory stressor led to activation of the HPA axis. Greater cortisol reactivity was associated with less accurate recognition of negative valence words. Among youth exposed to ELS, greater cortisol reactivity to acute stress was associated with poorer recognition of dysphoric and neutral words. Acute increases in cortisol may interfere with negatively-valenced information processing that has implications for memory. Youth exposed to high ELS may be particularly vulnerable to the effects of cortisol, which may explain one pathway through which stress leads to psychopathology among at-risk youth.Tigecycline and colistin are few of 'last-resort' antibiotic defences used in anti-infection therapies against carbapenem-resistant bacterial pathogens. The successive emergence of plasmid-borne tet(X) tigecycline resistance mechanism and mobile colistin resistance (mcr) determinant, renders them clinically useless. Here, we report that co-carriage of tet(X6) and mcr-1 gives co-resistance to both classes of antibiotics by a single plasmid in Escherichia coli. Tet(X6), the new tigecycline resistance enzyme is functionally defined. Both Tet(X6) and MCR-1 robustly interfere accumulation of antibiotic-induced reactive oxygen species (ROS). Unlike that mcr-1 exerts fitness cost in E. coli, tet(X6) does not. In the tet(X6)-positive strain that co-harbors mcr-1, tigecycline resistance is independently of colistin resistance caused by MCR-1-mediated lipid A remodelling, and vice versa. In general consistency with that of MCR-1, Tet(X6) leads to the failure of tigecycline treatment in the infection model of G. mellonella.

The aim of this study was to explore the changes in hippocampal subregions in older adults with cognitive frailty and the relationship between subregions and cognitive impairment as well as physical frailty.

  • Peat fires in tropical peatland release a substantial amount of carbon into the environment and cause significant harm to peatlands and the ecology, resulting in climate change, biodiversity loss, and the alteration of the ecosystem. It is essential to understand peat fires and to develop more effective methods for controlling them. To estimate carbon emissions and monitor fires, the depth of burning can measure the overall burnt down the volume, which is proportional to the carbon emissions that are emitted to the environment. The first step is to understand the technique of measuring the depth of the burn. However, there is a lack of integrated information regarding the burning depth for peat fires. This review paper discusses the techniques used to measure the burning depth, with particular attention given to quantifying carbon emissions. The article also provides information on the types of methods used to determine the burning depths. From this point, in the first phase, forest fire risk map of Kütahya-Ören region was prepared via the analyses of a variety of spatial data using geographical information system capabilities. The results showed that very-high and high-risk, moderate-risk and low-risk zones respectively comprised 36.86%, 60.39% and 2.76% of the total study area, and 82.8% of the region was visible from the towers. In the second phase of the study, remote sensing methods were utilized for the detection of the areas burned in October 2001 in Ören-Çamdibi region, which was officially recorded as 4 hectares. In the present study, the ability of Colocasia esculenta stem biomass was explored for the biosorption of toxic trace metals. The maximum removal was observed for arsenate (As5+) with 58.63%, followed by chromium (Cr6+) with 56.56%, and cadmium (Cd2+) with 41.2%. However, for copper (Cu2+), nickel (Ni2+), and zinc (Zn2+), low adsorption was observed. Batch sorption tests revealed that adsorbent dosage of 0.5g, 0.5g, and 0.3g; time of 10 h, 4 h, and 10 h; room temperature range of 25-30°C; pH range of 7.0-4.5; and initial concentration of 30 μg/L, 20 mg/L, and 30 mg/L were the optimum conditions for the removal of As5+, Cr6+, and Cd2+, respectively. Scanning electron microscope and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (SEM-EDX) analysis of Colocasia esculenta stem biomass before and after adsorption revealed that the trace metals successfully get adsorbed on the surface of the biosorbent. The equilibrium data fitted well with the adsorption isotherm model of Langmuir (for As5+, Cr6+, and Cd2+), Dubinin-Radushkevich (for As5+ and Cr6+), and Flory-Huggins (for Cd2+), and the kinetic data of As5+, Cr6+, and Cd2+ biosorption were best described by pseudo-second-order kinetic model. The current paper proposes a complete area coverage planning module for the modified hTrihex, a honeycomb-shaped tiling robot, based on the deep reinforcement learning technique. This framework simultaneously generates the tiling shapes and the trajectory with minimum overall cost. In this regard, a convolutional neural network (CNN) with long short term memory (LSTM) layer was trained using the actor-critic experience replay (ACER) reinforcement learning algorithm. The simulation results obtained from the current implementation were compared against the results that were generated through traditional tiling theory models that included zigzag, spiral, and greedy search schemes. The model presented in the current paper was also compared against other methods where this problem was considered as a traveling salesman problem (TSP) solved through genetic algorithm (GA) and ant colony optimization (ACO) approaches.   • Within this particular sample the PBD-Q showed excellent internal consistency, face validity, convergent validity, and test-retest reliability. In conclusion, our findings indicate that positive beliefs about dissociation can be reliably and validly measured in adults who experience levels of dissociation that are higher than the general population. These beliefs could be involved in the maintenance of dissociation and represent promising targets for future research, clinical assessment, and treatment.The objective of this study was to identify the prevalence and patterns of alcohol consumption and associated factors in the Karipuna indigenous people. A cross-sectional population-based study was conducted with 230 Karipunan respondents aged 15 or over from 12 villages in the state of Amapá, in the extreme northern Brazilian Amazon. The participants completed the Alcohol Use Disorders Identification Test (AUDIT). The prevalence of alcohol use among the Karipuna was 70%. Of these, 59.6% had low-risk use, 38.3% had hazardous or harmful alcohol use, and 2.2% met criteria for probable alcohol dependence. Overall, 40.5% of the respondents had hazardous or harmful alcohol use; 66.6% were men, and 33.4% were women. In the regression analysis, age, sex, religion, not having an occupation, being a student, low educational attainment, suicidal ideation and having sexual intercourse after alcohol consumption were associated with hazardous or harmful alcohol use. Sex and Catholic religion were risk factors for this alcohol use pattern among the Karipuna. The prevalence of problematic alcohol use among the Karipuna is higher than that observed among the general Brazilian population, and preventive screenings should be widely implemented. Efforts to address and minimize the consequences of harmful and hazardous alcohol use among Brazilian Amazonian indigenous populations could be developed.The estimation of aerodynamic drag in cycling through road tests has the advantage of considering actual cycling conditions. For that reason, the effect of vw and θ on the estimation of drag area (CDA) was studied. Numerical and experimental approaches were combined. The numerical approach investigated the sensitivity of CDA to vw and θ perturbations. The experimental approach analysed the effect of including or not vw and θ on the identification of CDA by comparing the changes in the prediction of power delivered. It was found that disregarding small values of vw (e.g. 0.5 m/s) and θ (e.g. gradient of 0.05%) leads to errors in the estimation of CDA of around 10%, referred to the actual value. It was also obtained that the average error of the power prediction when considering vw and θ for the identification of the parameters is about 4.4% and about 25.5% when vw and θ are neglected.     Prostate cancers frequently metastasize to bone, where the best microenvironment for distant colonization is provided. Since osteotropic metastasis of prostate cancer is a critical determinant of patients' survival, searches for preventive measures are ongoing in the field. Therefore, it is important to dissect the mechanisms of each step of bone metastasis, including the epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT) and cross-talk between metastatic niches and cancer cells.

    In this study, we established a highly bone-metastatic subline of human prostate cancer cells by selecting bone-homing population of PC3 cells after cardiac injection of eight-week-old male BALB/c-nude ****. Then we assessed the proliferation, EMT characteristics, and migration properties of the subline (mtPC3) cells in comparison with the parental PC3 cells. To investigate the role of S100A4, we performed gene knock-down by lentiviral transduction, or treated cells with recombinant S100A4 protein or a S100A4-neutralizing antibody. The effe intracellular S100A4 promotes cell proliferation and EMT characteristics in tumor cells, and that secreted S100A4 activates osteoclastogenesis, contributing to osteolytic bone metastasis. Thus, S100A4 upregulation in cancer cells highly metastatic to bone might be a key element in regulating bone metastasis.
    Calf mortality generally occurs in calves prior to weaning, which is a serious problem in cattle breeding. Several causative variants of monogenic Mendelian disorders in calf mortality have been identified, whereas genetic factors affecting the susceptibility of calves to death are not well known. To identify variants associated with calf mortality in Japanese Black cattle, we evaluated calf mortality as a categorical trait with a threshold model and performed a genome-wide copy number variation (CNV) association study on calf mortality.

    We identified a 44-kb deleted-type CNV ranging from 103,317,687 to 103,361,802 bp on chromosome 5, which was associated with the mortality of 1-180-day-old calves. The CNV harbored C1RL, a pseudogene, and an IncRNA localized in the C1R and C1S gene cluster, which is a component of the classical complement activation pathway for immune complexes for infectious pathogens. The average complement activity in CNVR_221 homozygotes at postnatal day 7 was significantly lower thanortality of 1-180-day-old calves. The complement activity in CNVR_221 homozygotes was significantly lower than that in heterozygotes and wild type animals. The frequency of the risk allele was higher in dead calves suffering from an infectious disease than in healthy cows. These results suggest that the existence of CNVR_221 in calves could be attributed to a reduction in complement activity, which in turn leads to susceptibility to infections. Thus, the risk allele could serve as a useful marker to reduce the mortality of infected Japanese Black calves.

We identified a 44-kb deleted-type CNV ranging from 103,317,687 to 103,361,802 bp on chromosome 5, which was associated with the mortality of 1-180-day-old calves. The CNV harbored C1RL, a pseudogene, and an IncRNA localized in the C1R and C1S gene cluster, which is a component of the classical complement activation pathway for immune complexes for infectious pathogens. The average complement activity in CNVR_221 homozygotes at postnatal day 7 was significantly lower thanortality of 1-180-day-old calves. The complement activity in CNVR_221 homozygotes was significantly lower than that in heterozygotes and wild type animals. The frequency of the risk allele was higher in dead calves suffering from an infectious disease than in healthy cows.   • Multicellular organization is particularly vulnerable to conflicts between different cell types when the body forms from initially isolated cells, as in aggregative multicellular microbes. Like other functions of the multicellular phase, coordinated collective movement can be undermined by conflicts between cells that spend energy in fuelling motion and 'cheaters' that get carried along. The evolutionary stability of collective behaviours against such conflicts is typically addressed in populations that undergo extrinsically imposed phases of aggregation and dispersal. Here, via a shift in perspective, we propose that aggregative multicellular cycles may have emerged as a way to temporally compartmentalize social conflicts. Through an eco-evolutionary mathematical model that accounts for individual and collective strategies of resource acquisition, we address regimes where different motility types coexist. Particularly interesting is the oscillatory regime that, similarly to life cycles of aggregative multicellular organisms, alternates on the timescale of several cell generations phases of prevalent solitary living and starvation-triggered aggregation. Crucially, such self-organized oscillations emerge as a result of evolution of cell traits associated to conflict escalation within multicellular aggregates.Cattle are cosmopolitan in distribution. The number of road accidents is increasing rapidly over time, in the urban areas of most of the developing countries, like India. In the present study, we estimated the population of cattle wandering on the streets/roads/highways of Raipur city of India using the direct headcount method and advanced Photographic Capture-Recapture Method (PCRCM). We compared these two methods of population estimation to check their suitability and adequacy. The analysis shows that 70.3% of all rings could not be perceptibly distinguished from a ring weighing 195.5 grams, indicating their suitability as commodity money. Perceptive weight equivalence is demonstrated between rings, and a selection of ribs and axe blades. Co-occurrence of these objects evidences their interchangeability. We further suggest that producing copies of rings led to recognition of weight similarities and the independent emergence of a system of weighing in Central Europe at the end of the Early Bronze Age.

Cervical stenosis is the most important complication due to the clinical repercussions. Studies show rates of cervical stenosis ranging from 1.3 to 19% after the Loop Electrosurgical Excision Procedure (LEEP).

    Our primary outcome was to compare the role of a new endocervical device to prevent cervical stenosis after LEEP in patients with high-grade squamous intraepithelial lesions (HSILs).

    A randomized clinical trial was performed including phases II and III for evaluation of a new device for cervical stenosis prevention. In Phase II, we included 25 patients who underwent LEEP and placement of the device to assess its toxicity and efficacy. In phase III, we compared two groups (with and without the use of an anti-stenosis device) to evaluate its efficacy and safety.

    From August 2015 to June 2018, 265 participants were randomized (Phase II 25, Phase III 120 with DUDA andens up space for a discussion of the utility of using cervical stenosis devices after LEEP. Perhaps in another type of conization it can be evaluated to avoid cervical stenosis.

To support this goal, we use observations of peak Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) as an indicator of seasonal drought conditions following a rainy season to show that delays in the onset of the rainy season (onset date) can be an effective early indicator of seasonal drought conditions. The core of this study is an evaluation of the relationship of the onset dates and peak NDVI, stratified by AFI risks, calculated using AFI reports by the United States Agency of International Development (USAID)-funded Famine Early Warning Systems Network (FEWS NET). Several parts of SSA, mostly located in East Africa (EA), reported the "Crisis" phase of AFI-requiring emergency food assistance-at least one-third of the time between April 2011 to present.

The problem is complex and difficult to solve, but more urgent than ever. Time is valuable and academicians, researchers and clinicians are overburdened and already extremely busy publishing their own research along with their ever growing clinical and administrative duties. Fewer and fewer individuals volunteer to provide their skilled work for free which is expected. The current incentives to review do not have a big impact on one's career and therefore are not realistic effective countermeasures. As the limits of the system are constantly stretched, there will inevitably come a "point of no return" and Surgical Journals will be the ones to first take the hit as there is an overwhelming evidence of burnout in the surgical specialties and the Surgical community is almost 50% smaller than its Medical counterpart. This review identifies the potential causes of the peer-review crisis, outlines the incentives and drawbacks of being a reviewer, summarizes the currently established common practices of rewarding reviewers and the existing and potential solutions to the problem. The magnitude of the problem and unsustainability that will make it perish are discussed along with its current flaws. Finally, recommendations are made to address many of the weaknesses of the system with the hope to revive it.
    We sought to construct a valid and reliable patient-reported outcome measure for patients with advanced malignancy and GIO.

    Bowel obstruction is the most common indication for palliative surgical consultation in patients with advanced cancer; however, no validated patient-reported outcome measures exist for this population.

    A total of 125 patients with GIO and 64 patients without GIO who underwent palliative surgical consultation completed the MDASI-GIO questionnaire and a single global quality-of-life question. Summary statistics were used to assess the symptom burden of GIO patients. Outcome measures were validity (construct and criterion) and reliability (internal and test-retest) for the MDASI-GIO.

    The majority of patients rated the severity of each of the 5 following GIO-specific symptoms as moderate to severe (rating of ≥5 on a 0 to 10 scale) "being unable to eat" (72%), "being unable to have a bowel movement" (65%), "abdominal discomfort" (62%), "stomach feeling full" (55%), and "abdominal cramping" (54%).     All consecutive PDs performed during the last 20 years at the Verona Pancreas Institute were divided into four 5-year timeframes and retrospectively analyzed in terms of indications, intraoperative features and surgical outcomes. Significant milestones were provided to understand practice changes using a before-after analysis method.

Summary statistics were used to assess the symptom burden of GIO patients. Outcome measures were validity (construct and criterion) and reliability (internal and test-retest) for the MDASI-GIO. The 2 groups received equal doses of either IPL or IVL which commenced intra-operatively with a bolus followed by a continuous infusion for 3 days postoperatively.
