    Androgen deprivation therapy (ADT) contributes to lean mass loss and adiposity increases in prostate cancer patients. Radiotherapy during ADT might act synergistically and further worsen body composition. Previous investigations have shown that resistance training is an effective method of preserving body composition during ADT, however, most have not accounted for direct or indirect effects of other therapies, such as radiotherapy. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to examine training adaptations of the tissue composition in patients receiving radiation therapy (RT) prior or during ADT.

    Analyses were performed by combining data from two previous trials for a total of 131 prostate cancer patients who underwent a combination of resistance and aerobic exercise training (N=70, age 68.9±6.6y, RT-before 13%, RT-during 14%) or usual care (N=61, age 67.5±7.9y, RT-before 16%, RT-during 20%) for 3months upon ADT onset. Whole-body lean mass (LM), fat percentage and appendicular LM were determined by dual energy x-ray absorptiometry, and lower-leg muscle area and density by peripheral computed tomography at baseline (onset of ADT) and at 3months post-intervention. Covariates included RT prior and during the intervention, demographic characteristics, physical symptoms, and chronic conditions.

    Radiotherapy before or during the intervention did not affect body composition. Only the usual care group experienced a significant decrease in whole-body LM (-994±150g, P<0.001) and appendicular LM (-126±19g, P<0.001), and an increase in whole-body fat percentage (1%±0.1%, P<0.001). There was no change in lower-leg muscle area or density in either group.

Current evidence indicates that ADEVs contribute to the development of adipose tissue dysfunction; a key feature of obese adipose tissue that it is associated with obesity-related comorbidities including cardiovascular disease (CVD). This review summarises our current knowledge of ADEVs in the development of adipose tissue dysfunction and the potential of ADEVs to disrupt redox signalling and exert vascular effects that may exacerbate CVD in obesity.Excessive generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) have great impacts on the development of periodontitis. Surprisingly, we found that inducing glutathionylation with disulfiram increased the production of O2●-/H2O2 by mitochondria oxidizing glycerol-3-phosphate (G3P), proline (Pro), or α-keto-β-methylvaleric acid (KMV). Treatment of mitochondria oxidizing G3P or Pro with rotenone or myxothiazol increased the rate of ROS production after incubating in 1000 nM disulfiram. Incubating mitochondria treated with disulfiram in both rotenone and myxothiazol prevented this increasrd electron transfer (FET) and reverse electron transfer (RET) from the UQ pool. Additionally, we were able to show that BCKDH is not a target for glutathione modification and that glutathionylation can also increase ROS production in mitochondria oxidizing branched chain amino acids following the modification of enzymes upstream of BCKDH.

Amongst these, a set of 13,141 filtered intergenic lncRNAs (lincRNAs) transcribed from 9803 lincRNA gene loci, of which, 66.5% were novel, were further analyzed. These lincRNAs were found to share many characteristics with mammalian lincRNAs, including relatively short lengths, fewer exons, lower expression levels, and stage-specific expression patterns. Functional studies motivated by "guilt-by-association" associated individual lincRNAs with specific GO functions, providing an important resource for future studies of lincRNA function. Most importantly, a weighted gene co-expression network analysis suggested that genes of the brown module were specifically associated with the day 2 stage. The thymus morphology, the level of serum granulocyte-macrophage colony-stimulating factor (GMC-SF), IL-1β, IL-3, IL-5, the relative mRNA expression of CD25, novel_mir2, CTLA4 and CD28 signal pathway were measured. Further more, the lymphocytes was extracted from thymus to measure the relative mRNA expression of CD28 signal pathway. The results showed that PAMK could significantly maintain normal cell morphology of thymus, alleviate the decrease level of GMC-SF, IL-1β, IL-5, IL-6, TGF-β, the increase level of IL-4, IL-10, and the decrease relative mRNA expression of novel_mir2, CD25 and CD28 signal pathway in thymus and lymphocytes induced by cyclophosphamide (CTX). The present review describes current research results in alternative systems by identifying how different poultry production operations (diet, environmental disruptive factors, diseases) impact the ecology and health of the ***. Various research efforts will be discussed that illustrate the nutritional value of free-range forages and how forages could be beneficial to animal health and production of both meat and eggs. The review also highlights the need for potential interventions to limit diseases without using antibiotics.

  • While real-time mechanistic studies of mechanochemical transformations of metal-organic materials have previously suggested that reactions follow a path described by Ostwald's rule of stages, i.e. from metastable to increasingly more stable product structures, the herein presented systematic study presents an exception to that rule, revealing that modification of energy input in the mechanochemical system, combined with a small energy difference between polymorphs, permits the selective synthesis of either the more stable room temperature form, or the new metastable high-temperature form, of the target cocrystal.The occurrence of isostructural conducting radical cation salts of diversely substituted tetrathiafulvalene (TTF) precursors with the same anion is most often limited to very similar derivatives such as tetramethyl-tetrathiafulvalene (TMTTF) and tetramethyl-tetraselenafulvalene (TMTSF). Here we show that the use of the oxo-bis[pentafluorotantalate(v)] dianion [Ta2F10O]2- affords upon electrocrystallization of TMTTF, TMTSF, bis(ethylenedithio)-tetrathiafulvalene (BEDT-TTF), racemic dimethyl-ethylenedithio-tetrathiafulvalene ((rac)-DM-EDT-TTF), and enantiopure (S,S)-DM-EDT-TTF a series of mixed valence crystalline radical cation salts with the same 3  1 stoichiometry. The donor layers show similar features in the five materials, such as alternation of trimeric units within stacks which arrange in parallel columns of β-type. The anion arranges either parallel or perpendicular to the stack direction and establishes numerous intermolecular CH⋯F hydrogen bonds.   • To investigate the admission characteristics and hospital outcomes for patients admitted with lower respiratory tract infections (LRTI) in Northern Queensland.

    We perform a retrospective analysis of the data covering an 11-year period, 2006-2016. Length of hospital stay (LOS) is modelled by negative binomial regression and heterogeneous effects are checked using interaction terms.

    A total of 11,726 patients were admitted due to LRTI; 2,430 (20.9%) were of Indigenous descent. We found higher hospitalisations due to LRTI for Indigenous than non-Indigenous patients, with a disproportionate increase in hospitalisations occurring during winter. The LOS for Indigenous patients was higher by 2.5 days [95%CI -0.15; 5.05] than for non-Indigenous patients. The average marginal effect of 17.5 [95%CI 15.3; 29.7] implies that the LOS for a patient, who was admitted to ICU, was higher by 17.5 days.

    We highlighted the increased burden of LRTIs experienced by Indigenous populations, with this information potentially being useful for enhancing community-level policy making. Implications for public health Future guidelines can use these results to make recommendations for preventative measures in Indigenous communities. Improvements in engagement and partnership with Indigenous communities and consumers can help increase healthcare uptake and reduce the burden of respiratory diseases.

    Preoperative malnourishment has been consistently associated with poor outcomes after radical cystectomy and other major abdominal surgeries. Most enhanced recovery after surgery (ERAS) studies have examined preoperative nutrition and its relationship to outcomes after gastrointestinal surgery. Although numerous studies have demonstrated the benefits of using an ERAS protocol, this study in unique in comparing 2 ERAS protocols, with and without a nutrition component.

    A formalized preoperative nutrition protocol (PNP) recommending use of preoperative immunonutrition and carbohydrate drink was introduced in June 2018. A total of 78 consecutive patients who drank both beverages were compared with 92 historical controls. Multivariable logistic regression analyses were sequentially performed to determine if preoperative nutrition was associated with binary outcome variables (30-day complication, infectious complication, and readmission within 30 days).

    The preoperative nutrition group and control group were statistically similar in distribution of age, sex, American Society of Anesthesiologists physical status classification, clinical stage, and body mass index.

However, in the context of social exclusion, how does behavioral monitoring affect individual behavior? In this study, we used the Cyberball game to induce the social exclusion effect in a group of participants. To explore the influence of social exclusion on the attention network, we administered the Attention Network Test (ANT) and compared results for the three subsystems of the attention network (orienting, alerting, and executive control) between exclusion (N = 60) and inclusion (N = 60) groups. Compared with the inclusion group, the exclusion group showed shorter overall response time and better executive control performance, but no significant differences in orienting or alerting. The excluded individuals showed a stronger ability to detect and control conflicts. It appears that social exclusion does not always exert a negative influence on individuals. In future research, attention to network can be used as indicators of social exclusion. This may further reveal how social exclusion affects individuals' psychosomatic mechanisms.The diagnostic peripheral biomarkers are still lacking for the bipolar II disorder (BD-II). We used isobaric tags for relative and absolute quantification technology to identify five upregulated candidate proteins [matrix metallopeptidase 9 (MMP9), phenylalanyl-tRNA synthetase subunit beta (FARSB), peroxiredoxin 2 (PRDX2), carbonic anhydrase 1 (CA-1), and proprotein convertase subtilisin/kexin type 9 (PCSK9)] for the diagnosis of BD-II. We analysed the differences in the plasma levels of these candidate proteins between BD-II patients and controls (BD-II, n = 185; Controls, n = 186) using ELISA. To establish a diagnostic model for the prediction of BD-II, the participants were divided randomly into a training group (BD-II, n = 149; Controls, n = 150) and a testing group (BD-II, n = 36; Controls, n = 36). Significant increases were found in all five protein levels between BD-II and controls in the training group. Logistic regression was analysed to form the composite probability score of the five proteins in the training group. Receiver-operating characteristic curve analysis revealed the diagnostic validity of the probability score [area under curve (AUC) = 0.89, P  less then  0.001]. The composite probability score of the testing group also showed good diagnostic validity (AUC = 0.86, P  less then  0.001). We use five different atmospheric reanalysis products for the storm surge reconstruction, the longest one going as far **** as 1836. The data that we generate can be used, for example, for long-term trend analyses of the storm surge climate and identification of regions where changes in the intensity and/or frequency of storms surges have occurred in the past. It also provides a better basis for robust extreme value analysis, especially for tide gauges where observational records are short. To explore the influence of social exclusion on the attention network, we administered the Attention Network Test (ANT) and compared results for the three subsystems of the attention network (orienting, alerting, and executive control) between exclusion (N = 60) and inclusion (N = 60) groups. Compared with the inclusion group, the exclusion group showed shorter overall response time and better executive control performance, but no significant differences in orienting or alerting. The excluded individuals showed a stronger ability to detect and control conflicts. It appears that social exclusion does not always exert a negative influence on individuals. We used isobaric tags for relative and absolute quantification technology to identify five upregulated candidate proteins [matrix metallopeptidase 9 (MMP9), phenylalanyl-tRNA synthetase subunit beta (FARSB), peroxiredoxin 2 (PRDX2), carbonic anhydrase 1 (CA-1), and proprotein convertase subtilisin/kexin type 9 (PCSK9)] for the diagnosis of BD-II. We analysed the differences in the plasma levels of these candidate proteins between BD-II patients and controls (BD-II, n = 185; Controls, n = 186) using ELISA. To establish a diagnostic model for the prediction of BD-II, the participants were divided randomly into a training group (BD-II, n = 149; Controls, n = 150) and a testing group (BD-II, n = 36; Controls, n = 36). Significant increases were found in all five protein levels between BD-II and controls in the training group. Logistic regression was analysed to form the composite probability score of the five proteins in the training group. Receiver-operating characteristic curve analysis revealed the diagnostic validity of the probability score [area under curve (AUC) = 0.89, P  less then  0.001]. The composite probability score of the testing group also showed good diagnostic validity (AUC = 0.86, P  less then  0.001). However, tide gauge records are often too short to assess trends and perform robust statistical analyses. Here we use a data-driven modeling framework to simulate daily maximum surge values at 882 tide gauge locations across the globe. We use five different atmospheric reanalysis products for the storm surge reconstruction, the longest one going as far back as 1836. The data that we generate can be used, for example, for long-term trend analyses of the storm surge climate and identification of regions where changes in the intensity and/or frequency of storms surges have occurred in the past. It also provides a better basis for robust extreme value analysis, especially for tide gauges where observational records are short. The confluence of biosciences, information sciences, and the engineering of biology, is unveiling promising bioinformational futures for a vibrant and sustainable bioeconomy. Bioinformational engineering, underpinned by DNA reading, writing, and editing technologies, has become a beacon of opportunity in a world paralysed by uncertainty. This article draws on lessons from the current pandemic and previous agricultural blights, and explores bioinformational research directions aimed at future-proofing the grape and wine industry against biological shocks from global blights and climate change.
    Information regarding chronic urticaria patients in the real-world setting is scarce. This analysis reports the two-year results of Portuguese patients included in the AWARE study.

    Non-interventional cohort study. Adult patients with a diagnosis of chronic urticaria with symptoms for at least two months, refractory to H1-antihistamines, consulting one of the 10 participating urticaria centers throughout Portugal, from the 31st October 2014 to 31st July 2015, have been included in the study. Clinical parameters, medicines taken for urticaria symptom relief, weekly urticaria activity score, and dermatology quality of life index have been collected throughout the two years of the study.

    Seventy-six patients were enrolled in the study. Results showed that the proportion of patients with omalizumab therapy almost duplicated after two years of the AWARE study, which was accompanied by the decrease of medical resources use and absenteeism. Moreover, urticaria severity and impact on quality of life both decreased after one year and continued to decrease at two years, although decreased severity was significant at both time points and quality of life was only significant at two years. At the end of two years, 79.0% of patients had their disease controlled compared to 29.3% at baseline (p < 0.001).

The identification of early biomarkers predictive of pathological complete response would help to optimize the multimodality management of the patients. A panel of 11 tumor-related proteins was investigated by immunohistochemistry in the pre-treatment biopsy of a group of locally advanced rectal cancer patients, to identify early biomarkers of pathological complete response to neoadjuvant chemoradiotherapy. A mono-institutional retrospective cohort of 95 stage II/III locally advanced rectal cancer patients treated with neoadjuvant chemoradiotherapy and surgery was selected based on clinical-pathological characteristics and the availability of a pre-treatment tumor biopsy. Eleven selected protein markers expression (MLH1, GLUT1, Ki67, CA-IX, CXCR4, COX2, CXCL12, HIF1, VEGF, CD44, and RAD51) was investigated. The optimal cut-off values were calculated by receiver oppatients for a tailored multi-modality treatment.
    The aim of this study was to describe the results of food environment assessments completed after Hurricane Florence in North Carolina (2018) and Hurricane María in Puerto Rico (2017), and provide recommendations for assessing disaster food environments.

    In both settings, unhealthful food items (soda, chips, fruit-flavored drinks) and milk were widely available and at lower prices than domestic averages. The adapted instrument in Puerto Rico allowed for documentation of greater availability of canned items compared with fresh or frozen foods. In both settings, researchers noted the inability of the instrument to document items that are important to assess postdisaster ready-to-heat and ready-to-eat foods; food preparation facilities and supplies; hygiene supplies; and empty shelf-space.

    The instruments, despite their limitations, were able to capture food availability issues in postdisaster environments. Future instrument adaptation is necessary to capture availability of all major food groups, healthful and unhealthful options, shelf-stable, ready-to-eat, and ready-to-heat foods versus other formats (fresh, frozen), and cooking and hygiene supplies.

  • From the analysis of published causal mutations, we identified 130 genes to be associated with mitochondrial heart diseases. A large proportion of these genes (34.3%) encode for key proteins involved in the oxidative phosphorylation system (OXPHOS), either as directly OXPHOS subunits (22.8%), and as OXPHOS assembly factors (11.5%). Mutations in several mitochondrial tRNA genes have been also reported in multi-organ or isolated MCM (15.3%). This review highlights the main disease-genes, identified by extensive genetic analysis, which could be included as target genes in next generation panels for the molecular diagnosis of patients with clinical suspect of mitochondrial cardiomyopathies.The reactivity of nanoscale zero-valent iron is limited by surface passivation and particle agglomeration. Here, Ni/Fe bimetallic nanoparticles embedded into graphitized carbon (NiFe@GC) were prepared from Ni/Fe bimetallic complex through a carbothermal reduction treatment. The Ni/Fe nanoparticles were uniformly distributed in the GC matrix with controllable particle sizes, and NiFe@GC exhibited a larger specific surface area than unsupported nanoscale zero-valent iron/nickel (FeNi NPs). The XRD results revealed that Ni/Fe bimetallic nanoparticles embedded into graphitized carbon were protected from oxidization. The NiFe@GC performed excellently in 2,4,6-trichlorophenol (TCP) removal from an aqueous solution. The removal efficiency of TCP for NiFe@GC-50 was more than twice that of FeNi nanoparticles, and the removal efficiency of TCP increased from 78.5% to 94.1% when the Ni/Fe molar ratio increased from 0 to 50%. The removal efficiency of TCP by NiFe@GC-50 can maintain 76.8% after 10 days of aging, **** higher than that of FeNi NPs (29.6%). The higher performance of NiFe@GC should be ascribed to the significant synergistic effect of the combination of NiFe bimetallic nanoparticles and GC. In the presence of Ni, atomic H* generated by zero-valent iron corrosion can accelerate TCP removal. The GC coated on the surface of Ni/Fe bimetallic nanoparticles can protect them from oxidation and deactivation.This meta-analysis aimed to explore the effects of caffeine ingestion on muscular endurance and muscular strength in women. Five databases were searched to find relevant studies. A random-effects meta-analysis of standardized mean differences (SMD) was performed for data analysis. Subgroup meta-analyses explored the effects of caffeine on upper-body and lower-body muscular endurance and muscular strength. Eight crossover placebo-controlled studies were included in the review. In the main meta-analysis that considered data from all included studies, there was a significant ergogenic effect of caffeine on muscular endurance (SMD = 0.25; p = 0.027) and muscular strength (SMD = 0.18; p less then 0.001). In a subgroup analysis that considered only upper-body exercises, there was a significant ergogenic effect of caffeine on muscular endurance (SMD = 0.20; p = 0.007) and muscular strength (SMD = 0.17; p less then 0.001). In a subgroup analysis that considered only lower-body exercises, there was no significant difference between caffeine and placebo for muscular endurance (SMD = 0.43; p = 0.092) or muscular strength (SMD = 0.16; p = 0.109). The main finding of this meta-analysis is that caffeine ingestion has a significant ergogenic effect on muscular endurance and muscular strength in women. The effects reported in this analysis are similar to those previously observed in men and suggest that women may use caffeine supplementation as an ergogenic aid for muscular performance. Future research is needed to explore the effects of caffeine on lower-body muscular endurance and muscular strength in this population.The genomic diversity of SARS-CoV-2 has been a focus during the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. Here, we analyzed the distribution and character of emerging mutations in a data set comprising more than 95,000 virus genomes covering eight major SARS-CoV-2 lineages in the GISAID database, including genotypes arising during COVID-19 therapy. Globally, the C>U transitions and G>U transversions were the most represented mutations, accounting for the majority of single-nucleotide variations. Mutational spectra were not influenced by the time the virus had been circulating in its host or medical treatment. At the amino acid level, we observed about a 2-fold excess of substitutions in favor of hydrophobic amino acids over the reverse. However, most mutations constituting variants of interests of the S-protein (spike) lead to hydrophilic amino acids, counteracting the global trend. Cocoa butter equivalents (CBEs) were fabricated by blending the as-prepared fats with 1,3-distearoyl-2-oleoyl glycerol (SOS)-rich fats obtained by hexane fractionation of degummed shea butter. POP-rich fats achieved under the best conditions for the fractionation of palm stearin had a significantly lower DAG content (1.6 w/w%) than that in the counterpart (4.6 w/w%) prepared by the previously reported method. The CBEs fabricated by blending the POP- and SOS-rich fats in a weight ratio of 4060 contained 63.7 w/w% total symmetric monounsaturated triacylglycerols, including 22.0 w/w% POP, 8.6 w/w% palmitoyl-2-oleoyl-3-stearoyl-rac-glycerol, 33.1 w/w% SOS, and 1.3 w/w% DAGs, which was not substantially different from the DAG content in cocoa butter (1.1 w/w%). Based on the solid-fat content results, it was concluded that, when these CBEs were used for chocolate manufacture, they blended with cocoa butter at levels up to 40 w/w%, without distinctively altering the hardness and melting behavior of cocoa butter.

Herein, poly(ethylene glycol) was modified with 4-methoxybenzamide and 3-(triethoxysilyl)propyl isocyanate (TPANIS) to create a novel surface functionalization capable of improving the colloidal stability and specificity of AuMSS nanospheres towards cancer cells. Moreover, a dual drug combination based on Doxorubicin (DOX) and Acridine orange (AO) was characterized and administered using the AuMSS-TPANIS nanospheres. The obtained results show that the DOXAO drug combination can mediate a synergistic therapeutic effect in both HeLa and MCF-7 cells, particularly at the 21, 11, and 12 ratios. Additionally, the TPANIS functionalization increased the AuMSS nanospheres colloidal stability and selectivity towards MCF-7 cancer cells (overexpressing sigma receptors). Such also resulted in an enhanced cytotoxic effect against MCF-7 cells when administering the DOXAO drug combination with the AuMSS-TPANIS nanospheres. Furthermore, there was no significant change observed for any clinical diagnosis category following the introduction of the shadowing programme.

Penile involvement has been reported only rarely. Management of cutaneous-limited disease is primarily reduction of immunosuppression and conversion to an mTOR-inhibitor, whereas the treatment of disseminated disease in transplant patients is more variable.

    A 75-year-old male, originally from Somalia, received a deceased-donor kidney transplant for diabetic and hypertensive nephropathy. Seven months post-transplant he presented with lower limb lesions, oedema and bilateral deep vein thromboses. He then developed a fast-growing painful lesion on his penile shaft. A biopsy of this lesion confirmed KS, and a PET scan demonstrated disseminated disease in the lower extremities, penis and thoracic lymph nodes. His tacrolimus was converted to sirolimus, and his other immunosuppression was reduced. He was treated with single agent paclitaxel chemotherapy in view of hision in immunosuppression where possible produces excellent short-term outcomes, adding to the body of evidence for this management strategy in disseminated Kaposi's sarcoma.
