  • Toluene can be intentionally misused by adolescents to experience psychoactive effects. Toluene has a complex mechanism of action and broad behavioral effects, among which memory impairment is reported consistently. We have previously reported that repeated toluene inhalation (8000 ppm) increases layer 5 prelimbic pyramidal cells' excitability in the medial prefrontal cortex (mPFC) of adolescent rats. Toluene also produces reactive oxygen species (ROS), which activate glial cells. Here, we tested the hypothesis that the anti-inflammatory agent minocycline would decrease toluene's effects because it inhibits NF-κB (nuclear factor enhancer of the kappa light chains of activated B cells) and reduces pro-inflammatory cytokine and ROS production. Our results show that minocycline (50 mg/kg, ip, for 10 days) prevents the hyperexcitability of mPFC neurons observed after repeated 8000 ppm toluene exposure (30 min/day, 2×/day for 10 days). Minocycline prevents toluene-induced hyperexcitability by a mechanism that averts the loss of the slow calcium-dependent potassium current, and normalizes mPFC neurons' firing frequency. These effects are accompanied by significant decreased expression of astrocytes and activated microglia in the mPFC, reduced NLRP3 inflammasome activation and mRNA expression levels of the pro-inflammatory cytokine interleukin 1β (IL-1β), as well as increased mRNA expression of the anti-inflammatory cytokine transforming growth factor β (TGF-β). Minocycline also prevents toluene-induced memory impairment in adolescent rats in the passive avoidance task and the temporal order memory test in which the mPFC plays a central role. These results show that neuroinflammation produces several effects of repeated toluene administration at high concentrations, and minocycline can significantly prevent them. Studies have shown that adult hippocampal neurogenesis may be a cause of depression. CX3CL1 is a chemokine that plays an important role in adult neurogenesis. This study aimed to investigate the relationship between CX3CL1 polymorphisms (rs170364) and the risk of depression. A case-control study of 502 patients with major depression and 504 gender-matched and age-matched healthy controls was performed. All subjects were recruited from the Chinese Han population. Next-generation sequencing was used to genotype the CX3CL1 rs170364 locus. Analgesic properties of orthosteric agonists of the muscarinic M4 receptor subtype have been documented in literature reports, with evidence from pharmacological and in vivo receptor knock out (KO) studies. Constitutive M4 receptor KO **** demonstrated an increased response in the formalin pain model, supporting this hypothesis. Two novel positive allosteric modulators (PAM) of the M4 receptor, Compounds 1 and 2, were characterized in rodent models of acute nociception. Results indicated decreased time spent on nociceptive behaviors in the mouse formalin model, and efficacy in the mouse tail flick assay. The analgesic-like effects of Compounds 1 and 2 were shown to be on target, as the compounds lacked any activity in constitutive M4 KO ****, while retaining activity in wild type control littermates. The analgesic-like effects of Compounds 1 and 2 were significantly diminished in KO **** that have selective deletion of the M4 receptor in neurons that co-express the dopaminergic D1 receptor subtype, suggesting a centrally-mediated effect on nociception. The opioid antagonist naloxone did not diminish the effect of Compound 1, indicating the effects of Compound 1 are not secondarily linked to opioid pathways. Compound 1 was evaluated in the rat, where it demonstrated analgesic-like effects in tail flick and a subpopulation of spinal nociceptive sensitive neurons, suggesting some involvement of spinal mechanisms of nociceptive modulation. These studies indicate that M4 PAMs may be a tractable target for pain management assuming an appropriate safety profile, and it appears likely that both spinal and supraspinal pathways may mediate the antinociceptive-like effects. V.Dissociations between reading and spelling deficits are likely to be associated with distinct deficits in orthographic word processing. To specify differences in automatic visual word recognition, the current ERP-study compared children with isolated reading fluency deficits (iRD), isolated spelling deficits (iSD), and combined reading fluency and spelling deficits (cRSD) as well as typically developing (TD) 10-year-olds while performing a variant of the Reicher-Wheeler paradigm children had to indicate which of two letters occurred at a given position in a previously presented word, legal pseudoword, illegal pseudoword or nonword. Event-related potentials (N200 and N400) associated with sublexical orthographic and lexical orthographic processing as well as phonological word processing were analyzed. All groups showed a word superiority effect, both on the behavioral and the neurophysiological level. Group differences occurred for phonological word processing. TD and iRD groups showed a higher N400 activation for illegal pseudowords than for nonwords, while the two spelling deficit groups showed no activation differences between these two stimuli conditions. The findings suggest that differences in phonological word processing are associated with spelling problems children with iSD showed reduced sensitivity for phonological word processing, while these deficits were not evident in children with iRD.

Four major groups of linear patterns can be distinguished Langer lines, dermatomes, Blaschko lines and exogenous patterns. Langer lines run in the direction of the underlying collagen fibers (least skin tension) and play an important diagnostic role for some exanthematous skin diseases. In the thoracodorsal region, the distribution of the Langer lines gives rise to what is referred to as a 'Christmas tree pattern'. A dermatome is an area of skin that is supplied by a single spinal nerve. Disorders with a neuronal origin follow this pattern of distribution. The lines of Blaschko delineate the lines of migration of epidermal cells during embryogenesis. Exogenous linear patterns are caused by external factors. The present CME article will highlight important skin disorders that primarily present in the form of one of the aforementioned patterns. In addition, we will also address skin conditions that may secondarily follow with these patterns (or distinctly not do so) as the result of various mechanisms such as the Koebner phenomenon, reverse Koebner phenomenon, and Wolf's isotopic response. © 2020 The Authors. METHODIK Die Verordnungspraxis wurde evaluiert mittels eines Fragebogens, der an 186 niedergelassene Dermatologen sowie 1491 Apotheken in Rheinland-Pfalz und dem Saarland versendet wurde. Ziel war Erfassung und Einordnung von Verordnungsgewohnheiten und Problemen in der interdisziplinären Zusammenarbeit zur Optimierung der Patientenversorgung. ERGEBNISSE In 351 Fällen (23,5 %) wurde ein beantworteter Fragebogen von Apothekern und in 53 Fällen (28,4 %) von Dermatologen zurückgesendet. Als häufigster Beweggrund (83 %) für die Verordnung eines Rezepturarzneimittels wurde von Dermatologen die Verordnung großer Mengen angegeben, häufigste Krankheitsbilder für die Verwendung von Rezepturen waren die Schuppenflechte und Ekzeme. Die am häufigsten verordneten Wirkstoffe waren Triamcinolonacetonid (80 %), Erythromycin (78,3 %) sowie Clotrimazol (72,5 %). Apotheker gaben an, dass die Kommunikation mit Ärzten „mit Ärger verbunden“ (58 %) sei und in einem viel zu geringen Umfang stattfinde (34 %). RESULTS 142/196 (72 %) patients had been variably screened for infections with HIV, HBV and HCV, Treponema pallidum, Neisseria gonorrhoeae, Chlamydia trachomatis, Mycoplasma genitalium and HSV. The STI coinfection rate in all tested patients was 24.6 %, yielding an NNS of 4.1 to detect any STI. Of note, the coinfection rate did not differ significantly between heterosexual men, homosexual men and women, respectively. The NNS for syphilis was 8.4, for HIV 14.0, for HCV 28.5 and for HBV 39.0. The NNS for asymptomatic patients tested for HSV, Chlamydia trachomatis and Mycoplasma genitalium were 1.4, 5.3 and 12.0, respectively. The NE is mainly composed of a nuclear lamina and a double membrane connected at specific points where the nuclear pore complexes (NPCs) form. Physiological aging might be generically defined as a functional decline across lifespan observed from the cellular to organismal level. Therefore, during aging and premature aging, several cellular alterations occur, including nuclear-specific changes, particularly, altered nuclear transport, increased genomic instability induced by DNA damage, and telomere attrition. Here, we highlight and discuss proteins associated with nuclear transport dysfunction induced by aging, particularly nucleoporins, nuclear transport factors, and lamins. Moreover, changes in the structure of chromatin and consequent heterochromatin rearrangement upon aging are discussed. These alterations correlate with NE dysfunction, particularly lamins' alterations.

All associations were evaluated by Monte-Carlo simulations and leave-one-out-cross-validation. Results The PET index showed the strongest correlation with both the rate of ambulance-required assistances (R2=0.72, p=0.008) and collapses (R2=0.71, p=0.008), followed by the UTCI (R2=0.64, p=0.017; R2=0.64, p=0.017) whereas the WBGT index showed substantially poorer correlations (R2=0.56, p=0.031; R2=0.56, p=0.033). PET stages of stress, match the rates of collapses better that the WBGT flag colour warning. Compared with the PET, the WBGT underestimates heat stress, especially at high radiant heat load. To assess the prognostic value of the Ph-like status in a pediatric-inspired, minimal residual disease (MRD)-driven trial, we screened 88 B-lineage ALL cases negative for the major fusion genes (BCR-ABL1, ETV6-RUNX1, TCF3-PBX1 and KTM2Ar) enrolled in the GIMEMA LAL1913 front-line protocol for adult BCR/ABL1-negative ALL. The screening - performed using the BCR/ABL1-like predictor - identified 28 Ph-like cases (31.8%), characterized by CRLF2 overexpression (35.7%), JAK/STAT pathway mutations (33.3%), IKZF1 (63.6%), BTG1 (50%) and EBF1 (27.3%) deletions, and rearrangements targeting tyrosine kinases or CRLF2 (40%). The correlation with outcome highlighted that i) the complete remission (CR) rate was significantly lower in Ph-like compared to non-Ph-like cases (74.1% vs 91.5%, p=0.044); ii) at time point 2 (TP2), decisional for transplant allocation, 52.9% of Ph-like cases vs 20% of non-Ph-like were MRD-positive (p=0.025); iii) the Ph-like profile was the only parameter associated with a higher risk of being MRD-positive at TP2 (p=0.014); iv) at 24 months, Ph-like patients had a significantly inferior event-free and disease-free survival compared to non-Ph-like patients (33.5% vs 66.2%, p=0.005 and 45.5% vs 72.3%, p=0.062, respectively). This is reflected in globin expression patterns measured between E12.5 and E14.5. Cultured Klf1wt/Nan E12.5 fetal liver cells display growth- and differentiation defects. These defects likely contribute to the delayed appearance of definitive erythrocytes in the circulation of Klf1wt/Nan embryos. After E14.5, expression of the embryonic/fetal globin genes is silenced rapidly. In adult Klf1wt/Nan animals, silencing of the embryonic/fetal globin genes is impeded, but only minute amounts are expressed. Design, Setting, and Participants This study was an investigator-initiated, single-center, nonblinded, feasibility, randomized clinical trial conducted at the Department of Cardiology of the Leiden University Medical Center between May 2016 and December 2018. Two hundred patients, who were admitted with either ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction or non-ST-segment acute coronary syndrome, were randomized in a 11 fashion between follow-up groups using smart technology and regular care. Statistical analysis was performed from January 2019 to March 2019. Interventions For patients randomized to regular care, 4 physical outpatient clinic visits were scheduled in the year following the initial event. In the inth groups (P > .99). A total of 20 hospitalizations for nonfatal adverse cardiac events occurred (8 in the intervention group and 12 in the control group). Of all patients, 32% sent in measurements each week, with 63% sending data for more than 80% of the weeks they participated in the trial. In the intervention group only, 90.3% of patients were satisfied with the smart technology intervention. Conclusions and Relevance These findings suggest that smart technology yields similar percentages of patients with regulated BP compared with the standard of care. Such an intervention is feasible in clinical practice and is accepted by patients. More research is mandatory to improve patient selection of such an intervention. Individual household indoor environment data and ARI incidence were continuously collected. A time-stratified case-crossover analysis was conducted to estimate the excess risk (ER) of ARI associated with per unit increase of daily mean indoor temperature, relative humidity (RH) and absolute humidity (AH). RESULT In total, 168 episodes of ARI were reported with an average risk of 36.8% per year. We observed a negative association of ARI with indoor AH up to five lag days in cool season, with a 6-day cumulative ER estimate of -9.0% (95% confidence interval -15.9%, -1.5%). Negative associations between household temperature or RH and ARI were less consistent across warm and cool seasons. Objectives To investigate whether smart technology in clinical practice can improve BP regulation and to evaluate the feasibility of such an intervention. Design, Setting, and Participants This study was an investigator-initiated, single-center, nonblinded, feasibility, randomized clinical trial conducted at the Department of Cardiology of the Leiden University Medical Center between May 2016 and December 2018. Two hundred patients, who were admitted with either ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction or non-ST-segment acute coronary syndrome, were randomized in a 11 fashion between follow-up groups using smart technology and regular care. Statistical analysis was performed from January 2019 to March 2019. Interventions For patients randomized to regular care, 4 physical outpatient clinic visits were scheduled in the year following the initial event. In the inth groups (P > .99). A total of 20 hospitalizations for nonfatal adverse cardiac events occurred (8 in the intervention group and 12 in the control group). Of all patients, 32% sent in measurements each week, with 63% sending data for more than 80% of the weeks they participated in the trial. In the intervention group only, 90.3% of patients were satisfied with the smart technology intervention. Conclusions and Relevance These findings suggest that smart technology yields similar percentages of patients with regulated BP compared with the standard of care. Such an intervention is feasible in clinical practice and is accepted by patients. More research is mandatory to improve patient selection of such an intervention. Individual household indoor environment data and ARI incidence were continuously collected. A time-stratified case-crossover analysis was conducted to estimate the excess risk (ER) of ARI associated with per unit increase of daily mean indoor temperature, relative humidity (RH) and absolute humidity (AH). RESULT In total, 168 episodes of ARI were reported with an average risk of 36.8% per year. We observed a negative association of ARI with indoor AH up to five lag days in cool season, with a 6-day cumulative ER estimate of -9.0% (95% confidence interval -15.9%, -1.5%). Negative associations between household temperature or RH and ARI were less consistent across warm and cool seasons.   • Cellular stress can occur in many forms; oxidative stress caused by reactive oxygen species (ROS), metabolic stress from increased metabolic programs and genotoxic stress in the form of DNA damage and disrepair. In most instances, these different types of cell stress initiate programmed cell death. However, in cancer, cells are able to resist cellular stress and by-pass growth limiting checkpoints. Recent findings have now revealed that the large and heterogenous RNA species known as long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs) are major players in regulating and overcoming cancer cell stress. lncRNAs constitute a significant fraction of the genes differentially expressed in response to cell stress and contribute to the management of downstream cellular processes, including the regulation of key stress responses such as metabolic stress, oxidative stress and genotoxic stress. These factors were used to construct a nomogram model, a survival prognostication tool for 3- and 5-year tumor-specific survival and overall survival among patients with endometrial carcinoma. Results A total of 63,729 patients were randomly assigned to the training group (n = 42,486) and the test group (n = 21,243). Age, race, year of diagnosis, histologic grade, clinical stage, and tumor size were assessed as predictors of cancer-specific survival (CSS) and univariate and multivariate Cox regression analyses were used to identify independent prognostic factors (P less then 0.05). Finally, a nomogram was constructed, the predicted C-indices for cancer-specific survival and overall survival training groups were 0.859 (95% confidence interval 0.847-0.871) and 0.782 (95% confidence interval 0.772-0.792). Conclusions Nomograms constructed using various clinical indicators can provide better and more accurate predictions for patients with endometrial carcinoma. What's more, we used an external independent cohort (n = 511) from GSE39582 for further validation. Overall survival was estimated by the Kaplan-Meier method, and the survival curves were compared by log-rank tests. Cox proportional hazards models were used for multivariate analyses to calculate the hazard ratios (HRs) and test independent significance. Immunohistochemistry and Western blot were applied to detect protein expression of ESR1 in CRC patients and cell lines. The stable knockdown and overexpressed cells were transduced with the lentivirus. Cell viability was measured by an MTS reagent. Results The predictive value of ESR1 was investigated in locally advanced CRC patients. Kaplan-Meier analysis indicated that ESR1 expression was significantly correlated with OS in patients receiving adjuvant chemotherapy from these cohorts, with p = 0.015 and p less then 0.001, respectively. ESR1 expression was significantly correlated with 5-flurouracil (5-FU)-based adjuvant chemotherapy in training with an HR of 1.792 (95%CI 1.100-2.921, p = 0.019). Downregulation of ESR1 was related with enhanced chemosensitivity to 5-FU in CRC cell lines, while upregulation of ESR1 was correlated with decreased chemosensitivity. Most of head and neck cancer (HNC) units are currently led by MDTs that at least include ENT and maxillofacial surgeons, radiation and medical oncologists. HNC often compromise relevant structures of the upper aerodigestive tract involving functions such as speech, swallowing and breathing, among others. The impairment of these functions can significantly impact patients' quality of life and psychosocial status, and highlights the crucial role of specialized nurses, dietitians, psycho-oncologists, social workers, and onco-geriatricians, among others. Hence, these professionals should be integrated in HNC MDTs. In addition, involving translational research teams should also be considered, as it will help reducing the existing gap between basic research and the daily clinical practice. The aim of this comprehensive review is to assess the role of the different supportive disciplines integrated in an MDT and how they help providing a better care to HNC patients during diagnosis, treatment and follow up.

  • Results suggest that, after controlling for sex and age, perceived stress partially mediates the association between cybervictimization and suicidal ideation. Furthermore, the mediation effects of perceived stress were independently moderated by vengeance and avoidance. Thus, revenge and avoidance might intensify the adverse impact of perceived stress on suicidal ideation. These results highlight how and when cybervictimization is related to suicidal ideation. We discuss the results in relation to previous research and consider their practical implications. These findings suggest that adolescents' perceived stress, together with vengeance and avoidance motivations, may be key targets for prevention and intervention programs dealing with cybervictimization. This highlights the need to implement treatment and prevention programs focused on decreasing such motivations.Background African Americans receive more aggressive end-of-life care than Whites. Little is known about how palliative care consultation to discuss goals-of-care ("PCC") is associated with acute care utilization and costs by race. Objective To compare future acute care costs and utilization between propensity-matched cohorts of African Americans with and without PCC, and Whites with and without PCC. Measurements Accumulated mean acute care costs and utilization (30-day readmissions, future hospital days, future intensive care unit [ICU] admission, future number of ICU days) after discharge from index hospitalization. Results No significant difference between African Americans with or without PCC in mean future acute care costs ($11,651 vs. $15,050, p = 0.09), 30-day readmissions (p = 0.58), future hospital days (p = 0.34), future ICU admission (p = 0.25), or future ICU days (p = 0.30). There were significant differences between Whites with PCC and those without PCC in mean future acute care costs ($8,095 vs. $16,799, p  less then  0.001), 30-day readmissions (10.2% vs. 16.7%, p  less then  0.0001), and future days hospitalized (3.7 vs. 6.3 days, p  less then  0.0001). Conclusions PCC decreases future acute care costs and utilization in Whites and, directionally but not significantly, in African Americans. Research is needed to explain why utilization and cost disparities persist among African Americans despite PCC.Studies on sexual revictimization have employed two distinct approaches perpetrator-oriented and victim-oriented approaches. Although the former posits that sexual revictimization is associated with perpetrators' aggressiveness and victim-offender proximity, the latter focuses on the effects of victims' situational and behavioral factors. In addition to these conflicting approaches, studies have grappled with the fact that a large number of respondents have not experienced victimization, thereby impacting the analytical strategies that should be used. This study uses the data from the National Intimate Partner and Sexual Violence Survey and employs stepwise zero-inflated and non-zero-inflated methods to examine the impact of perpetrator-oriented and victim-oriented approaches on sexual victimizations that occur by force and those that occur due to incapacitation while taking into consideration that the majority of respondents have not experienced the victimizations under study. Findings show that both perpetrator-oriented (particularly aggressiveness) and victim-oriented factors impact sexual revictimization. The implications of the findings and the limitations of this study are discussed.Past studies that have analyzed fear of victimization using samples composed of men and women have most frequently controlled for the effect of gender. This study not only controls for the effect of gender, but also examines how the predictors of fear of victimization may vary across gender. To do so, separate regression models for men and women were estimated and the corresponding z tests were calculated for the purpose of analyzing whether the differences between genders were significant. The results showed that women scored higher on the general fear of crime victimization scale, as well as for fear of becoming victims of each of the specific crimes under study. Religiosity had an equally significant effect on men and women's fear of victimization. Also, younger participants were more likely to fear being victims in the cases of both men and women, although this effect was even more pronounced among women. In addition, respondents' fear of victimization differed across gender based on sexual orientation. Finally, the results showed a few variables (political orientation and sexual victimization) that were only significant in the case of women, but not of men. The findings of this study confirm that fear of victimization and its predictors vary between women and men.High levels of miR-19 play an important role in malignant diseases of the hematopoietic system.     Results suggest that, after controlling for sex and age, perceived stress partially mediates the association between cybervictimization and suicidal ideation. Furthermore, the mediation effects of perceived stress were independently moderated by vengeance and avoidance. Thus, revenge and avoidance might intensify the adverse impact of perceived stress on suicidal ideation. These results highlight how and when cybervictimization is related to suicidal ideation. Results No significant difference between African Americans with or without PCC in mean future acute care costs ($11,651 vs. $15,050, p = 0.09), 30-day readmissions (p = 0.58), future hospital days (p = 0.34), future ICU admission (p = 0.25), or future ICU days (p = 0.30). There were significant differences between Whites with PCC and those without PCC in mean future acute care costs ($8,095 vs. $16,799, p  less then  0.001), 30-day readmissions (10.2% vs. 16.7%, p  less then  0.0001), and future days hospitalized (3.7 vs. 6.3 days, p  less then  0.0001). Conclusions PCC decreases future acute care costs and utilization in Whites and, directionally but not significantly, in African Americans. Research is needed to explain why utilization and cost disparities persist among African Americans despite PCC.Studies on sexual revictimization have employed two distinct approaches perpetrator-oriented and victim-oriented approaches. Although the former posits that sexual revictimization is associated with perpetrators' aggressiveness and victim-offender proximity, the latter focuses on the effects of victims' situational and behavioral factors. In addition to these conflicting approaches, studies have grappled with the fact that a large number of respondents have not experienced victimization, thereby impacting the analytical strategies that should be used. This study uses the data from the National Intimate Partner and Sexual Violence Survey and employs stepwise zero-inflated and non-zero-inflated methods to examine the impact of perpetrator-oriented and victim-oriented approaches on sexual victimizations that occur by force and those that occur due to incapacitation while taking into consideration that the majority of respondents have not experienced the victimizations under study. Findings show that both perpetrator-oriented (particularly aggressiveness) and victim-oriented factors impact sexual revictimization. The implications of the findings and the limitations of this study are discussed.Past studies that have analyzed fear of victimization using samples composed of men and women have most frequently controlled for the effect of gender. This study not only controls for the effect of gender, but also examines how the predictors of fear of victimization may vary across gender. To do so, separate regression models for men and women were estimated and the corresponding z tests were calculated for the purpose of analyzing whether the differences between genders were significant. The results showed that women scored higher on the general fear of crime victimization scale, as well as for fear of becoming victims of each of the specific crimes under study. Religiosity had an equally significant effect on men and women's fear of victimization. Also, younger participants were more likely to fear being victims in the cases of both men and women, although this effect was even more pronounced among women. In addition, respondents' fear of victimization differed across gender based on sexual orientation. Finally, the results showed a few variables (political orientation and sexual victimization) that were only significant in the case of women, but not of men. The GDD sponge was characterized using scanning electron microscopy, compressive strength, porosity, and Fourier transform infrared. The potential bioactivity of the sponge was evaluated by osteogenic differentiation of BMSCs using 3(4, dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2, 5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide assay and quantifying alkaline phosphatase (ALP) activity. in vivo experiments were evaluated through a micro-computerized tomography (μ-CT) and histological assays. The analysis confirmed that an increase in the concentration of the GDD in the sponge leads to a higher bone formation and deposition in rat calvarial defects. Histological assay results were in line with μ-CT. In a separate trial, we also compared different mulch types (coco fiber discs, rice husks or a mixture of sawdust and wheat bran) for their potential to support the establishment and population development of the predatory mites after their release. RESULTS The percentage of unmarketable fruits caused by P. kellyanus was significantly reduced in the plots where G. aculeifer was released. The addition of coco fiber discs did not reduce further the percentage of unmarketable fruits. Sawdust + bran mulch was the most effective in preserving immature and adult predatory mite population after their release. In this study, UK populations of four brome species have been tested for the early development of resistance to acetolactate synthase inhibiting herbicides commonly used in their control. RESULTS Glasshouse assays confirmed reduced sensitivity to ALS-inhibiting herbicides in single populations of A. diandra, B. commutatus, and B. secalinus, and in three populations of A. sterilis. In contrast, all 60 brome populations tested were sensitive to the ACCase-inhibiting herbicide propaquizafop and glyphosate. Dose-response with two ALS herbicides showed broad-ranging resistance in the A. diandra, A. sterilis, and B. commutatus populations. In the B. commutatus population, this was associated with a point mutation in the ALS enzyme conferring target site resistance (TSR). Additionally, resistant populations of A. sterilis and B. commutatus populations contained enhanced levels of an orthologue of the glutathione transferase phi (F) class 1 (GSTF1) protein, a functional biomarker of non-target site resistance (NTSR) in Alopecurus myosuroides. NTSR was further evidenced as these plants also demonstrated an enhanced capacity to detoxify herbicides. CONCLUSION This study confirms the evolution of resistance to ALS inhibiting herbicides in brome species in the UK by mechanisms consistent with the evolution of both TSR and NTSR. These findings point to the need for increased vigilance in detecting and mitigating against the evolution of herbicide resistance in brome species in Northern Europe. Several studies have demonstrated that clinical isolates from diseased patients, particularly those of African descent, frequently belong to specific clones of A. actinomycetemcomitans that produce significantly higher amounts of a protein exotoxin belonging to the repeats-in-toxin (RTX) family, leukotoxin (LtxA), whereas isolates from healthy patients harbor minimally leukotoxic strains. This finding suggests that LtxA might play a key role in A. actinomycetemcomitans pathogenicity. Because of this correlation, **** work over the past 30 years has been focused on understanding the mechanisms by which LtxA interacts with and kills host cells.   • This study investigated changes in the intestinal microbiota during 8-week infliximab maintenance therapy in inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) patients in clinical remission. The Tm is as large as 13-17 μs in deuterated solvent, potentially expanding the range of distances available for measurement by dipole spectroscopy with photoexcited porphyrin. The 1/Tm depends linearly on the degree of solvent deuteration and can be used to probe the environment of a porphyrin in or near a biopolymer, including the solvent accessibility of porphyrins used in photodynamic therapy. We characterized the noncovalent binding of porphyrin to human serum albumin (HSA) from 1/Tm and electron spin echo envelope modulation (ESEEM) and found that porphyrin is quite exposed to solvent on the surface of HSA. Estrogen receptor-positive (ER+) breast cancers present a unique set of challenges for determining optimal neoadjuvant treatment approaches. There is increased recognition that not all ER+ breast cancers benefit from chemotherapy, and that there may be a subset of ER+ breast cancers that can be treated effectively using endocrine therapies alone. With this uncertainty, there is a need to improve the assessment and to optimize the treatment of ER+ breast cancers. While pathology-based markers offer a snapshot of tumor response to neoadjuvant therapy, non-invasive imaging of the ER disease in response to treatment would provide broader insights into tumor heterogeneity, ER biology, and the timing of surrogate endpoint measurements. In this review, we provide an overview of the current landscape of breast imaging in neoadjuvant studies and highlight the technological advances in each imaging modality. We then further examine some potential imaging markers for neoadjuvant treatment response in ER+ breast cancers.Intimate partner violence is an important social issue all over the world, and human sciences, in particular, are working to reduce it. Despite this, the topic is a little recognized phenomenon. Understanding the origins and the variables that have an impact on manic-style romantic relationships, as defined by John Alan Lee, is of primary importance, in particular in Italy where the data reveal alarming statistics. Most studies have not controlled for earlier depressive symptoms as a cause of successive depression or as an antecedent of romantic styles. In our study, we investigate the association between depression and romantic style, trying to test the moderating role of the gender variable in 283 Italian emerging adults (139 women and 144 men). In order to achieve this aim, we performed a multigroup structural equation model analysis. The hypothesis that gender moderates the relationship between depression and romantic styles is still yet to be confirmed. Men with high levels of depression do not seem to be able to establish relationships based on commitment, as required by the eros style. Women with high levels of depression are more frequently involved in possessive and demanding relationships or in pragmatic ones, confirming their need for dependence.Contemporary minimally invasive surgical (MIS) treatment options of patients with male Lower Urinary Tract Symptoms (LUTS) in men with prostate glands >80 mL include Holmium Laser Enucleation Prostate (HoLEP), Thulium laser VapoEnucleation Prostate (ThuVEP), and Laparoscopic (LSP) or Robotic-Assisted Simple Prostatectomy (RASP). Implementing new laser technologies is costly, and the steep learning curve of these laser techniques limit their wide range use. This promoted the use of LSP and RASP in centers with readily established laparoscopy or robotic surgery programs. The aim of this study is to review case and comparative series of RASP. We systematically reviewed published data from 2008 to 2020 on RASP and have identified 26 non-comparative and 9 comparative case series. RASP has longer operation time but less time spent in hospital and less blood loss. The outcomes of improvements in symptom score, post-voiding residual urine (PVR), postoperative PSA decline, complications, and cost are similar when compared to open and laser enucleation techniques.

  • The aim of present study was to investigate the effects of dietary Zn level on growth performance, Zn bioaccumulation, antioxidant capacity and innate immunity in juvenile mud crab (Scylla paramamosain). Six semi-purified diets were formulated to contain dietary Zn levels of 44.5, 56.9, 68.5, 97.3, 155.6 or 254.7 mg·kg-1, respectively. Dietary Zn level significantly influenced percent weight gain (PWG), with highest observed in crab fed the diet containing 97.3 mg·kg-1 Zn. Tissue Zn concentrations significantly increased as dietary Zn levels increased from 44.5 to 254.7 mg·kg-1. Retention of Zn in hepatopancreas increased with dietary Zn levels up to 68.5 mg·kg-1 and then significantly decreased. RESULTS The blood gases and Apgar scores was more favorable in term newborns (P less then 0.001). Levels of protein/expression of HbF in newborns with Apgar score greater than 7 was lower than that of the newborns with Apgar score below 7 (P less then 0.001). Cortisol and HbA levels were considerably higher in term newborns compared to the preterm ones (P less then 0.001). In the preterm and term groups, SKA2 gene expression had a positive and significant relationship with cortisol and HbA levels as well as a negative relationship with HbF level. In the preterm group, a positive and significant relationship was observed between the expression of SKA2 and HbF genes. CONCLUSION The results revealed that the SKA2 gene affected on hematopoietic maturation in preterm and term newborns and the health outcome of newborns improved by increasing HbA level. Reptiles such as tortoise, python, and water monitor lizards are exposed to heavy metals, tolerate high levels of radiation, feed on rotten/germ-infested feed, thrive in unsanitary habitat and yet have prolonged lifespans. Such species are rarely reported to develop cancer, suggesting presence of anticancer molecules/mechanisms. METHODS Here, we tested effects from sera of Asian water monitor lizard (Varanus salvator), python (Malayopython reticulatus) and tortoise (Cuora kamaroma amboinensis) against cancer cells. Sera were collected and cytotoxicity assays were performed using prostate cancer cells (PC3), Henrietta Lacks cervical adenocarcinoma cells (HeLa) and human breast adenocarcinoma cells (MCF7) as well as human keratinized skin cells (Hacat), by measuring lactate dehydrogenase release as indicator for cell death. Growth inhibition assays were performed to determine the effects on cancer cell proliferation.

Thus, the correlation between increased Notch3 signaling and poor prognosis may be influenced by increased metastasis of HGSC via increased adherence of disseminating cells to new metastatic sites in the peritoneum.Background Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) is increasingly recognized as an important cause of illness in adults; however, data on RSV disease and economic burden in this age group remain limited. We aimed to provide comprehensive estimates of RSV disease burden among adults aged ≥18 years. Methods During 2012-2015, population-based, active surveillance of acute respiratory infection (ARI) hospitalizations enabled estimation of the seasonal incidence of RSV hospitalizations and direct health costs in adults aged ≥18 years in Auckland, New Zealand. Results Of 4,600 ARI hospitalizations tested for RSV, 348 (7.6%) were RSV positive. The median (interquartile range) length of hospital stay for RSV positive patients was 4 (2-6) days. The seasonal incidence rate (IR) of RSV hospitalizations, corrected for non-testing, was 23.6 (95% confidence intervals [CI] 21.0-26.1) per 100,000 adults aged ≥18 years. Hospitalization risk increased with age with the highest incidence among adults aged ≥80 years (IR 190.8 per 100,000, 95% CI 137.6-244.0). Being of Māori or Pacific ethnicity or living in a neighborhood with low socioeconomic status (SES) were independently associated with increased RSV hospitalization rates. We estimate RSV-associated hospitalizations among adults aged ≥18 years to cost on average NZD $4,758 per event. Conclusions RSV infection is associated with considerable disease and economic cost in adults. RSV disproportionally affects adult sub-groups defined by age, ethnicity, and neighborhood SES. An effective RSV vaccine or RSV treatment may offer benefits for older adults.Social cognition is dependent on the ability to extract information from human stimuli. Of those, patterns of biological motion (BM) and in particular walking patterns of other humans, are prime examples. Although most often tested in isolation, BM outside the laboratory is often associated with multisensory cues (i.e. we often hear and see someone walking) and there is evidence that vision-based judgments of BM stimuli are systematically influenced by motor signals. Furthermore, cross-modal visuo-tactile mechanisms have been shown to influence perception of bodily stimuli. Based on these observations, we here investigated if somatosensory inputs would affect visual BM perception. In two experiments, we asked healthy participants to perform a speed discrimination task on two point light walkers (PLW) presented one after the other. In the first experiment, we quantified somatosensory-visual interactions by presenting PLW together with tactile stimuli either on the participants' forearms or feet soles. In the second experiment, we assessed the specificity of these interactions by presenting tactile stimuli either synchronously or asynchronously with upright or inverted PLW. Our results confirm that somatosensory input in the form of tactile foot stimulation influences visual BM perception. When presented with a seen walker's footsteps, additional tactile cues enhanced sensitivity on a speed discrimination task, but only if the tactile stimuli were presented on the relevant body-part (under the feet) and when the tactile stimuli were presented synchronously with the seen footsteps of the PLW, whether upright or inverted. Overall, 227 consecutive adult patients were enrolled, including 106 cases (mean age 79.4±12.8 years, 55 females; 15 December-15 January) and 121 controls (mean age 74.3±16.6 years, 56 females; 16 January-16 February). Demographic characteristics, CC, length of stay, and early mortality rate were assessed. Seventy-one white and 70 brown hens were used. Hens were randomly assigned to three treatments at 1-day-old beak trimmed and fed a regular diet; non-beak trimmed and fed a regular diet; and non-beak trimmed and fed a diet supplemented with probiotics, Bacillus subtilis. At 40 weeks of age, hens were tested for TI reactions. Eye and face temperatures were measured with IRT immediately before and after TI testing. Results revealed that the probiotic supplementation did not affect hens' stress responses to TI testing; the left and right eye temperatures increased by 0.26s°C and 0.15°C, respectively, while right face temperature tended to increase following TI testing. However, the right eye (32.60°C for white, and 32.35°C for brown) and face (39.51°C for white, and 39.36°C for brown) temperatures differed significantly among genetic lines. There was a positive correlation between TI duration and the changes of the left and right eye temperatures after TI testing in white hens. Based on these results, hens experienced TI-induced surface temperature changes that were detectable using IRT. White hens experienced greater stress reactions in response to TI than brown hens. However, supplementation with Bacillus subtilis did not attenuate hens' reaction to TI testing.

Results revealed that the probiotic supplementation did not affect hens' stress responses to TI testing; the left and right eye temperatures increased by 0.26s°C and 0.15°C, respectively, while right face temperature tended to increase following TI testing. However, the right eye (32.60°C for white, and 32.35°C for brown) and face (39.51°C for white, and 39.36°C for brown) temperatures differed significantly among genetic lines. There was a positive correlation between TI duration and the changes of the left and right eye temperatures after TI testing in white hens. Based on these results, hens experienced TI-induced surface temperature changes that were detectable using IRT. White hens experienced greater stress reactions in response to TI than brown hens. However, supplementation with Bacillus subtilis did not attenuate hens' reaction to TI testing.
