After initial screening of 1207 records, 60 full texts were assessed for eligibility; 6 were excluded due to lack of information about exposure or outcome, leaving 54 studies.

  • Somatic mutations in ubiquitin activating enzyme 1 (UBA1) cause a newly defined syndrome known as VEXAS. More than fifty percent of patients currently identified with VEXAS meet diagnostic criteria for relapsing polychondritis (RP). Clinical features that characterize VEXAS within a cohort of RP have not been defined.

    Exome and targeted sequencing of the UBA1 gene was performed in a prospective observational cohort of patients with RP. Clinical and immunological characteristics of patients with RP were compared based on presence or absence of UBA1 mutations. Random forest was used to derive a clinical algorithm to identify patients with UBA1 mutations.

    Seven out of 92 patients with RP (7.6%) had UBA1 mutations (VEXAS-RP). Patients with VEXAS-RP were male, ≥ 45 years at disease onset, and commonly had fever, ear chondritis, skin involvement, deep vein thrombosis, and pulmonary infiltrates. No patient with VEXAS-RP had chondritis of the airways or costochondritis. Mortality was greater in VEXAS-RP than RP (27% vs 2%, p=0.01). Elevated acute phase reactants and hematologic abnormalities (e.g. macrocytic anemia, thrombocytopenia, lymphopenia, multiple myeloma, myelodysplastic syndrome) were prevalent in VEXAS-RP. A decision tree algorithm based on male sex, MCV>100fL, and platelet count<200k/uL classified between VEXAS-RP and RP with 100% sensitivity and 96% specificity.

In this study, we extended these studies to look at cell survival, maturation, and functional integration in an in vivo rat model of rhodopsin-mutant retinitis pigmentosa causing blindness. We found that only when human photoreceptor precursor cells were preincubated with PKX-001 prior to transplantation, did the cells integrate and mature into cone photoreceptors expressing S-opsin or L/M opsin. In addition, ribbon synapses were observed in the transplanted cells suggesting they were making synaptic connections with the host tissue. Furthermore, optokinetic tracking and electroretinography responses in vivo were significantly improved compared to cell transplants without PKX-001 pre-treatment. These data demonstrate that PKX-001 promotes significant long-term stem cell survival in vivo, providing a platform for further investigation towards the clinical application to repair damaged or diseased retina.Three dimensional (3D) printing has recently expanded in popularity and has become an effective approach for tissue engineering. Advances in tissue engineering have increased the effectiveness of cell-based therapies. Indeed, the ultimate goal of such treatment is the development of conditions similar to fetal wound regeneration. In this context, technology of 3D printing also allows researchers to more effectively compose multi-material and cell-laden scaffolds with less effort. In this study, we explored a synthetic gel scaffold derived from 3D bioprinter with or without stem cells to accelerate wound healing and skin defects. Adipose-derived stem cells (ADSCs) were isolated and seeded into 3D bioprinter derived-gel scaffold. Morphological and cell adherence properties of 3D scaffold were assessed by hemotoxylin & eosin (H&E) staining and scanning electron microscopy and cell viability was determined by methylthiazolyldiphenyl-tetrazolium bromide assay. In vivo assessment of the scaffold was done using H&E staining in the full-thickness burn rat model. The experimental groups included; (a) untreated (control), (b) 3D bioprinter derived-gel scaffold (Trial 1), and (c) 3D bioprinter derived-gel scaffold loaded with ADSC (Trial 2). Our results represented 3D bioprinter derived-gel scaffold with or without ADSCs accelerated wound contraction and healing compared to control groups. Epithelization was completed until 21 days after operation in scaffold alone. In scaffold with ADSCs group, epithelization was faster and formed a multi-layered epidermis with the onset of cornification. In conclusion, 3D bioprinter derived-gel scaffold with or without ADSCs has the potential to be used as a wound graft material in skin regenerative medicine.

    The previously identified population-based cohort of Olmsted County, Minnesota residents ≥18 years of age who fulfilled PsA criteria during 1970-1999 was extended to include patients with incident PsA in 2000-2017. Age- and sex-specific incidence rates and point prevalence, adjusted to 2010 US white population, were reported.

    There were 164 incident cases of PsA in 2000-17, with a mean age of 46.4 (SD=12.0) years and 47% females. The overall age- and sex-adjusted annual incidence of PsA per 100,000 population was 8.5 (95% CI 7.2-9.8), and higher in males (9.3, 95% CI 7.4-11.3) than females (7.7, 95% CI 5.9-9.4) in 2000-2017. Overall incidence was highest in the age range 40-59 years. The incidence rate was relatively stable in 2000-2017 with no evidence of increase overall or in males, but a modest increase of 3% per year in females, compared to 1970-1999 where a 4%/yr rise in incidence was observed.

    The Global Digital Exemplar (GDE) Program is a national attempt to accelerate digital maturity in healthcare providers through promoting knowledge transfer across the English National Health Service (NHS). "Blueprints"-documents capturing implementation experience-were intended to facilitate this knowledge transfer. Here we explore how Blueprints have been conceptualized, produced, and used to promote interorganizational knowledge transfer across the NHS.

    We undertook an independent national qualitative evaluation of the GDE Program. This involved collecting data using semistructured interviews with implementation staff and clinical leaders in provider organizations, nonparticipant observation of meetings, and key documents. We also attended a range of national meetings and conferences, interviewed national program managers, and analyzed a range of policy documents. Our analysis drew on sociotechnical principles, combining deductive and inductive methods.

    Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) patients are at risk for resource-intensive outcomes including mechanical ventilation (MV), renal replacement therapy (RRT), and readmission. Accurate outcome prognostication could facilitate hospital resource allocation. We develop and validate predictive models for each outcome using retrospective electronic health record data for COVID-19 patients treated between March 2 and May 6, 2020.

    For each outcome, we trained 3 classes of prediction models using clinical data for a cohort of SARS-CoV-2 (severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2)-positive patients (n = 2256). Cross-validation was used to select the best-performing models per the areas under the receiver-operating characteristic and precision-recall curves. Models were validated using a held-out cohort (n = 855). We measured each model's calibration and evaluated feature importances to interpret model output.

However, arginase is another enzyme, which if expressed concomitantly, may strongly compete for L-Arginine, and suppress NO production by iNOS. In the present study, plasma nitrite and arginase levels were measured in VL patients before and after successful drug treatment, endemic and non-endemic healthy donors. We observed significantly lower NO levels in the plasma of VL patients as compared to endemic controls, which improved significantly post-treatment. Significantly elevated arginase activity was also observed in the plasma of VL patients, which may be associated with NO deficiency. VL patients also showed significantly higher levels of IL-10 and TGF-β, which are known to regulate expression of arginase in various immune cells. The objectives of this study were to determine the rate of azole resistance in Aspergillus fumigatus during a 5-year period, taking into account (i) differences between underlying diseases of the patients treated, (ii) cross-resistance between azoles, and (iii) focusing on the 5-year evolution of our center's cystic fibrosis cohort. Overall, the rates of voriconazole (VRC)-resistant and itraconazole (ITC)-resistant A. fumigatus isolates were 4.1% (38/927) and 14.5% (95/656), respectively, corresponding to 21/426 (4.9%) and 44/308 (14.3%) patients, respectively. Regarding cross-resistance, among VRC-R isolates tested for ITC, nearly all were R (20/21;95%), compared to only 27% (20/74) of VRC-R among ITC-R isolates. The level of azole resistance remained somewhat stable over years but greatly varied according to the azole drug, patient origin, and clinical setting. Whereas azole resistance during invasive aspergillosis was very scarce, patients with cystic fibrosis were infected with multiple strains and presented the highest rate of resistance 5% (27/539) isolates were VRC-R and 17.9% (78/436) were ITC-R. DNAm was profiled in all eight sample-types from each individual using the Illumina EPIC array. We identified significant differences in both the level and variability of DNAm between different sample types, and DNAm data-derived estimates of age and smoking were found to differ dramatically across sample types from the same individual. We found that for the majority of loci variation in DNAm in individual blood cell types was only weakly predictive of variance in DNAm measured in whole blood, although the proportion of variance explained was greater than that explained by either buccal or nasal epithelial samples. Herein, the ability of an image processing-based, nondestructive technique to classify spinach freshness was evaluated. Images of spinach leaves were taken using a smartphone camera after different storage periods. Twelve sensory panels ranked spinach freshness into one of four levels using these images. The rounded value of the average from all twelve panel evaluations was set as the true label. The spinach image was removed from the background, and then converted into a gray scale and CIE-Lab color space (L*a*b*) and Hue, Saturation and Value (HSV). The mean value, minimum value, and standard deviation of each component of color in spinach leaf were extracted as color features. We collected three peripheral tissues (whole blood, buccal epithelial and nasal epithelial cells) from thirty individuals. Whole blood samples were subsequently processed using fluorescence-activated cell sorting (FACS) to purify five constituent cell-types (monocytes, granulocytes, CD4+ T cells, CD8+ T cells, and B cells). DNAm was profiled in all eight sample-types from each individual using the Illumina EPIC array. We identified significant differences in both the level and variability of DNAm between different sample types, and DNAm data-derived estimates of age and smoking were found to differ dramatically across sample types from the same individual. We found that for the majority of loci variation in DNAm in individual blood cell types was only weakly predictive of variance in DNAm measured in whole blood, although the proportion of variance explained was greater than that explained by either buccal or nasal epithelial samples. This dashboard is intended as a user-friendly dashboard for researchers as well as the general public to track the COVID-19 pandemic, and is generated from trusted data sources and built in open-source R software (Shiny in particular); ensuring a high sense of transparency and reproducibility. The R Shiny framework serves as a platform for visualization and analysis of the data, as well as an advance to capitalize on existing data curation to support and enable open science. Coded analysis here includes logistic and Gompertz growth models, as two mathematical tools for predicting the future of the COVID-19 pandemic, as well as the Moran's index metric, which gives a spatial perspective via heat maps that may assist in the identification of latent responses and behavioral patterns. For a subsample of participants that participated in both surveys (n = 443), we also trace developments at the individual level through a longitudinal analysis. The results show that students' health information seeking takes place primarily online and changed markedly during the corona crisis. The comparatively high relevance of sources that are largely based on unchecked user-generated content raises the concern whether students' health information-seeking behavior guarantees the necessary quality and reliability of health information. Significant correlations between the intensity of corona-related information seeking, risk perception, and actual risk behavior were found.The past two decades have seen an accumulation of theoretical and empirical evidence for the interlinkages between human health and well-being, biodiversity and ecosystem services, and agriculture. However, there are theoretical and practical challenges that have precluded the full development and practical implementation of this approach. Whilst integrated approaches to health are increasingly adopting a social-ecological system framework (SES), the lack of clarity in framing the key concept of resilience in health contexts remains a major barrier to its implementation by scientists and practitioners. We propose an operational framework, based on a transdisciplinary definition of Socio-Ecological System Health (SESH) that explicitly links health and ecosystem management with the resilience of SES, and the adaptive capacity of the actors and agents within SES, to prevent and cope with emerging health and environmental risks. We focus on agricultural transitions that play a critical role in disease emergence and biodiversity conservation, to illustrate the proposed participatory framework to frame and co-design SESH interventions. Finally, we highlight critical changes that are needed from researchers, policy makers and donors, in order to engage communities and other stakeholders involved in the management of their own health and that of the underpinning ecosystems.

    Vasoactive agents with endoscopic therapy are used to treat acute variceal bleeding (AVB). There are two main groups of vasoactive agents terlipressin and vasopressin (T-V), and octreotide and somatostatin (O-S). However, the benefit/harm balance is unclear. Our aim was to assess the efficacy and safety of T-V versus O-S for the management of AVB.

    We performed a systematic search for randomized controlled trials (RCTs) in PubMed, Scopus, and CENTRAL. Our main outcomes were mortality and adverse events. Secondary outcomes were bleeding control, rebleeding, blood transfusion, hospital stay. We evaluated the certainty of evidence using GRADE methodology.

    We included 21 RCTs. The risk of mortality (RR 1.01; 95%CI 0.83-1.22), bleeding control (RR 0.96; 95%CI 0.91-1.02; I 2 =53%), early rebleeding (RR 0.91; 95%CI 0.66-1.24 I 2 =0%), late rebleeding (RR 0.94; 95 CI 0.56-1.60; I 2 =0%), blood transfusion (MD 0.04; 95%CI -0.31-0.39; I 2 =68%) and hospital stay (MD -1.06; 95%CI -2.80-0.69; I 2 =0%) were similar between T-V and O-S groups. Only 15 studies reported adverse events, which were significantly higher in the T-V compared to the O-S group (RR 2.39; 95%CI 1.58-3.63; I 2 =57%). The certainty of evidence was moderate for the main outcomes, and low or very low for others.

    In a prospective cohort study, adults undergoing outpatient endoscopy were enrolled as incident EoE cases or non-EoE controls. Clinical, endoscopic, and histologic data were collected. An esophageal biopsy was utilized for microbiome analysis. Bacterial DNA was extracted and the V3-V4 region of the 16S rRNA gene was amplified and sequenced. Analyses were performed comparing microbiome features for cases and controls, and within cases for disease features, with correction for multiple hypothesis testing.

    A total of 24 incident EoE cases (mean age 40 years; 63% male; 100% white; 97 eos/hpf) and 25 controls (mean age 48, 36% male; 76% white; 1 eos/hpf) were analyzed. Principal coordinate analysis ordination failed to distinguish cases from controls. There were no microbiome differences within EoE cases based on clinical phenotype, presence of atopy, or endoscopic features. Use of proton pump inhibitors (PPIs), however, was significantly associated with 5 taxa including SR1 at the phylum level and Burkholderia at the genus level.

    The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic has impeded the treatment of elective shoulder patients all over the world. Owing to the constraints in personnel and operation theater capacities, many patients who should undergo planned surgeries could not receive medical care. In our study, we examined the status quo of elective shoulder arthroscopy during the pandemic in Germany.

    Using a nonprofit database, 40 shoulder units that performed the most arthroscopic rotator cuff repairs in Germany in 2018 were identified. Following a standardized protocol, the web pages of these units were screened, and their strategy for elective procedures during the COVID-19 pandemic was analyzed. Special emphasis was put on the use of new digital technologies.

    At the time of the study, no unit had stopped scheduling appointments for elective shoulder patients because of the pandemic. Almost all units (97.5%) offered explicit information about COVID-19 and their strategies toward it. The possibilities of visiting patients in shoulder units varied owing to local restrictions.

The importance of endoscopic examination in the diagnostic process of metastatic patients with unknown primaries is highlited by this case.Fecal microbiota transplantation involves the infusion of intestinal microorganisms via the transfer of a stool from a healthy individual into a diseased individual, with the intent of restoring normal intestinal flora. Fecal transplant is proposed for the treatment of refractory Clostridioides difficile infection. At present, recurrent Clostridioides difficile infection is the only indication supported by solid scientific evidence. Regulations by healthcare authorities vary among different countries. Considering that Romania does not have an available national guideline to offer standardization, this paper aimed to create a national fecal microbiota transplantation guideline concerning indications, techniques and donor screening, developed by international and local scientific working groups. Vasoactive agents with endoscopic therapy are used to treat acute variceal bleeding (AVB). There are two main groups of vasoactive agents terlipressin and vasopressin (T-V), and octreotide and somatostatin (O-S). However, the benefit/harm balance is unclear. Our aim was to assess the efficacy and safety of T-V versus O-S for the management of AVB. We performed a systematic search for randomized controlled trials (RCTs) in PubMed, Scopus, and CENTRAL. Our main outcomes were mortality and adverse events. Secondary outcomes were bleeding control, rebleeding, blood transfusion, hospital stay. We evaluated the certainty of evidence using GRADE methodology. We included 21 RCTs. The risk of mortality (RR 1.01; 95%CI 0.83-1.22), bleeding control (RR 0.96; 95%CI 0.91-1.02; I 2 =53%), early rebleeding (RR 0.91; 95%CI 0.66-1.24 I 2 =0%), late rebleeding (RR 0.94; 95 CI 0.56-1.60; I 2 =0%), blood transfusion (MD 0.04; 95%CI -0.31-0.39; I 2 =68%) and hospital stay (MD -1.06; 95%CI -2.80-0.69; I 2 =0%) were similar between T-V and O-S groups. A total of 24 incident EoE cases (mean age 40 years; 63% male; 100% white; 97 eos/hpf) and 25 controls (mean age 48, 36% male; 76% white; 1 eos/hpf) were analyzed. The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic has impeded the treatment of elective shoulder patients all over the world. Owing to the constraints in personnel and operation theater capacities, many patients who should undergo planned surgeries could not receive medical care. In our study, we examined the status quo of elective shoulder arthroscopy during the pandemic in Germany. Using a nonprofit database, 40 shoulder units that performed the most arthroscopic rotator cuff repairs in Germany in 2018 were identified. Following a standardized protocol, the web pages of these units were screened, and their strategy for elective procedures during the COVID-19 pandemic was analyzed. Special emphasis was put on the use of new digital technologies. At the time of the study, no unit had stopped scheduling appointments for elective shoulder patients because of the pandemic. Almost all units (97.5%) offered explicit information about COVID-19 and their strategies toward it. The possibilities of visiting patients in shoulder units varied owing to local restrictions.

    To encourage people to lead healthier lifestyles, governments in many countries publish guidelines for alcohol intake, physical activity (PA), and fruit and vegetable (FV) intake. However, there is a need for better understanding of whether people understand such guidelines, consider them useful, and adhere to them. University students are a group worthy of attention because although they are less likely than older adults to exceed U.K. weekly alcohol intake guidelines or to be inactive, they are also less likely to meet FV consumption targets. Furthermore, because behavior during youth predicts adult behavior, it is important to identify influences on healthier behavior.

    An online survey was completed by 559 U.K. university students. Key outcome variables were knowledge of guidelines, motivation to adhere to them, and adherence to them.

    A total of 72% adhered to guidelines for alcohol intake, 58% for PA, and 20% for FV intake. Students generally had poor or moderate knowledge of guidelines, perceived them as only moderately useful, and were only moderately motivated to adhere to them. Greater motivation to adhere to guidelines was not significantly related to more accurate knowledge. However, it was related to greater familiarity, and perceiving guidelines as useful and realistic, and greater conscientiousness.

Historically, patients were limited by the selection of donors, while the advancement of haploidentical stem cell transplantation (haplo-SCT) has greatly expanded the donor pool. However, the outcomes of haplo-SCT in TM recipients vary between different programs. In this study, we retrospectively studied 73 pediatric TM patients (median age, 7 years; range, 3 to 14 years) who underwent haplo-cord transplantation. Both the estimated overall survival and transfusion-free survival were 95.26% (CI 95.77% to 96.23%). Neither primary nor secondary graft failures were observed. The median follow-up period was 811 days (range, 370 to 1433 days). Median neutrophil and platelet engraftment times were 22 days (range, 8 to 48 days) and 20 days (range, 8 to 99 days), respectively. Acute graft-versus-host disease (aGVHD) was observed in 52% of patients and of these, 25% developed grade III to IV aGVHD. Cord blood engraftment was associated with delayed immune recovery and increased aGVHD severity. Viral DNAemia occurred in a relatively high proportion of patients but only 7% of patients developed CMV disease, while another 7% of patients had post-transplantation lymphoproliferative disorder. Long-term complication outcomes were good. Only one patient developed extensive chronic GVHD. No surviving patients were reliant on blood transfusion by the time this manuscript was submitted.   • We examined socioeconomic, academic, and health-related factors associated with respondent reports that childcare interfered with academics.

    We administered a cross-sectional survey to a representative sample of students at a public university in New York City. Using a sub-set of those who reported being parents/guardians (n = 176), we conducted bivariate analyses to assess factors associated with childcare problems interfering with school.

    About 30% of the sample reported that childcare interfered with school somewhat/moderately/a lot in the last year. Compared to those with no/little perceived interference, they were significantly more likely to need mental health treatment (30% vs. 13%;
     < 0.01), worry that they would run out of food sometimes/often (32% vs. 16%;
     < 0.01), and experience housing problems (26% vs. 9%;
     < 0.01).

    Offering mental healthcare and services addressing food and housing insecurity can help college students to navigate challenges inherent to being a student parent.

Motivations for using tobacco products included social influences, stress-relief, and increasing energy. TU mostly indicated that there are negative effects on their health but not on their athletic performance, whereas NTU reported potential detrimental effects on their teammate's performance. Overall, varsity athletes who use tobacco products are aware of the health effects and negative opinions of their teammates.As students gradually return to P-12 classrooms in the United States during and after the COVID-19 pandemic, they will have faced and been inundated with images of death at unprecedented levels. Teachers, administrators, and other school personnel will be challenged with assisting students in processing these encounters with death. While death education is no longer a formal component of the American curriculum, death education took on a prominent role in the curriculum during its "Period of Popularity" from 1968-1977. Lessons from this period can help guide educators in bringing **** needed components of death education to P-12 classrooms today.Objective First, to examine general health care attitudes and health care utilization of a University Health Service (UHS) at a large university. Second, to identify differences between LGBT and non-LBGT students. Participants 2,943 university students were surveyed in Spring 2013; 7.8% LGBT, 67% undergraduate and 65% female. Methods A cross-sectional mixed-methods online survey to assess health care utilization and attitudes. Results A majority had utilized UHS and held positive attitudes in general. LGBT students were more likely to use UHS for ongoing care, mental health, and preventive care; report concerns about utilization (e.g. confidentiality, sensitivity, and discrimination issues); report provider discomfort discussing sexuality; and hold positive attitudes toward the health care needs of LGBT students. Conclusions University health centers have an important role in student health. Barriers to care should be removed, including perceived discrimination. Student health center staff should be trained on LGBT health issues.

    Online surveys were administered to all participants involving information on loneliness, social supports, basic need satisfactions, community/university service utilization, and barriers to service use. Logistic and linear regressions, analysis of variance were conducted.
    Emerging adults were found to have a greater likelihood of service utilization when higher in social support from friends and less likely to utilize services when high in relatedness and competence need satisfaction, specifically in regard to community services. Group differences in greater barriers to service utilization were found among the highest levels of loneliness and the lowest levels of need satisfaction.
    Overall, this study indicates psychosocial supports and loneliness are related to service utilization in a nuanced manner.

Online surveys were administered to all participants involving information on loneliness, social supports, basic need satisfactions, community/university service utilization, and barriers to service use. Logistic and linear regressions, analysis of variance were conducted. Emerging adults were found to have a greater likelihood of service utilization when higher in social support from friends and less likely to utilize services when high in relatedness and competence need satisfaction, specifically in regard to community services. Group differences in greater barriers to service utilization were found among the highest levels of loneliness and the lowest levels of need satisfaction. Overall, this study indicates psychosocial supports and loneliness are related to service utilization in a nuanced manner.

Disease and OB-lesion-specific expression of miR-21-5p was confirmed and by computational analysis we were able to identify the network of genes most probably associated miR-21-5p in the context of OB fibrogenesis. Among all potentially associated genes, STAT3 had a very high probability score. Immunohistochemistry showed that STAT3/miR-21-5p were co-over expressed in OB lesions, thus, suggesting miR-21-5p could regulate STAT3 expression. However, miR-21-5p inhibition in cultures of bronchiolitis obliterans syndrome (BOS) derived myofibroblasts did not significantly affect STAT3 mRNA and protein expression levels. A systematic review of the published literature was conducted in accordance with the PRISMA (Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses) guidelines and included PubMed, Embase, and Science Direct databases. Medical Subject Headings (MeSH) terms used were "cheek" OR "midface" OR "malar" and "filler" OR "hyaluronic acid" OR "Juvederm" OR "Restylane" OR "Perlane" OR "Belotero." The initial search identified 699 articles; 256 duplicates were removed. Additional 12 studies were identified from reference lists.   • The application of 3D printing in planning endoscopic endonasal transsphenoidal surgery is illustrated based on the analysis of patients with intracranial skull base diseases who received treatment in our department. Cranial computed tomography/magnetic resonance imaging data are attained preoperatively, and three-dimensional reconstruction is performed using MIMICS (Materialise, Leuven, Belgium). Models of intracranial skull base diseases are printed using a 3D printer before surgery. The models clearly demonstrate the morphologies of the intracranial skull base diseases and the spatial relationship with adjacent large vessels and bones. The printing time of each model is 12.52-15.32 h, and the cost ranges from 900 to 1500 RMB. The operative approach was planned in vitro, and patients recovered postoperatively well without severe complications or death. In a questionnaire about the application of 3D printing, experienced neurosurgeons achieved scores of 7.8-8.8 out of 10, while unexperienced neurosurgeons achieved scores of 9.2-9.8. Resection of intracranial skull base lesions is demonstrated to be well assisted by 3D printing technique, which has great potential in disclosing adjacent anatomical relationships and providing the required help to clinical doctors in preoperative planning.Evaluation of tear film break-up pattern (TFBUP) is the main diagnostic method for tear film-oriented therapy (TFOT) of dry eye. This prospective, observational study examined TFBUPs in 154 eyes/sides from 78 patients with thyroid eye disease (TED) who met the diagnostic criteria for dry eye in Japan. TFBUPs were classified as area, line, spot, dimple, and random breaks. Results for the status of TED and dry eye were compared between the TFBUPs. Consequently, line, spot, dimple, and random breaks were observed in 80 (51.9%), 29 (18.8%), 10 (6.5%), and 35 eyes (22.7%) while no eyes showed area breaks. The random break group had the highest incidence of lid lag/Graefe sign and superior limbic keratoconjunctivitis (SLK) (P  less then  0.050). Although the incidence of each TFBUP is almost equal in patients with simple dry eye without TED, line breaks were more frequently observed in TED. In addition, while random breaks in simple dry eye are usually only associated with minor ocular surface damages, those in TED were associated with a higher incidence of concomitant SLK. Even though birds represent valuable models for constitutive adult neurogenesis, current proteomic studies of the avian CSF are limited to chicken embryos. Here we use liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (nLC-MS/MS) to explore the proteomic composition of CSF and plasma in adult chickens (Gallus gallus) and evolutionarily derived parrots budgerigar (Melopsittacus undulatus) and cockatiel (Nymphicus hollandicus). Because cockatiel lacks a complete genome information, we compared the cross-species protein identifications using the reference proteomes of three model avian species chicken, budgerigar and zebra finch (Taeniopygia guttata) and found the highest identification rates when mapping against the phylogenetically closest species, the budgerigar. In total, we identified 483, 641 and 458 unique proteins consistently represented in the CSF and plasma of all chicken, budgerigar and cockatiel conspecifics, respectively. Comparative pathways analyses of CSF and blood plasma then indicated clusters of proteins involved in neurogenesis, neural development and neural differentiation overrepresented in CSF in each species. We investigated the correlations between fetal ventriculomegaly-with or without other ultrasound anomalies-and chromosome abnormalities. 222 fetuses were divided into four groups (I) 103 (46.4%) cases with isolated ventriculomegaly, (II) 41 (18.5%) cases accompanied by soft markers, (III) 33 (14.9%) cases complicated with central nervous system (CNS) anomalies, and (IV) 45 (20.3%) cases with accompanying anomalies. Karyotyping and single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) array were used in parallel. Karyotype abnormalities were identified in 15/222 (6.8%) cases. Karyotype abnormalities in group I, II, III, and IV were 4/103 (3.9%), 2/41 (4.9%), 4/33 (12.1%), and 5/45 (11.1%), respectively. Concerning the SNP array analysis results, 31/222 (14.0%) were CNVs, CNVs in groups I, II, III, and IV were 11/103 (10.7%), 6/41 (14.6%), 9/33 (27.3%), and 5/45 fetuses (11.1%), respectively. Detections of clinical significant CNVs were higher in non-isolated ventriculomegaly than in isolated ventriculomegaly (16.81% vs 10.7%, P = 0.19). SNP arrays can effectively identify CNVs in fetuses with ventriculomegaly and increase the abnormal chromosomal detection rate by approximately 7.2%, especially ventriculomegaly accompanied by CNS anomalies.Magnetically actuated lab-on-a-chip (LOC) technologies have enabled rapid, highly efficient separation of specific biomarkers and cells from complex biological samples. Nonlinear magnetophoresis (NLM) is a technique that uses a microfabricated magnet array (MMA) and a time varying external magnetic field to precisely control the transport of superparamagnetic (SPM) beads on the surface of a chip based on their size and magnetization. We analyze the transport and separation behavior of SPM monomers and dimers on four MMA geometries, i.e., circular, triangular, square and rectangular shaped micromagnets, across a range of external magnetic field rotation frequencies. The measured critical frequency of the SPM beads on an MMA, i.e., the velocity for which the hydrodynamic drag on a bead exceeds the magnetic force, is closely related to the local magnetic flux density landscape on a micromagnet in the presence of an external magnetic field. A set of design criteria has been established for the optimization of MMAs for NLM separation, with particular focus on the shape of the micromagnets forming the array.
    The application of 3D printing in planning endoscopic endonasal transsphenoidal surgery is illustrated based on the analysis of patients with intracranial skull base diseases who received treatment in our department. Cranial computed tomography/magnetic resonance imaging data are attained preoperatively, and three-dimensional reconstruction is performed using MIMICS (Materialise, Leuven, Belgium). Models of intracranial skull base diseases are printed using a 3D printer before surgery. The models clearly demonstrate the morphologies of the intracranial skull base diseases and the spatial relationship with adjacent large vessels and bones. The printing time of each model is 12.52-15.32 h, and the cost ranges from 900 to 1500 RMB. The operative approach was planned in vitro, and patients recovered postoperatively well without severe complications or death. In a questionnaire about the application of 3D printing, experienced neurosurgeons achieved scores of 7.8-8.8 out of 10, while unexperienced neurosurgeons achieved scores of 9.2-9.8. Resection of intracranial skull base lesions is demonstrated to be well assisted by 3D printing technique, which has great potential in disclosing adjacent anatomical relationships and providing the required help to clinical doctors in preoperative planning.Evaluation of tear film break-up pattern (TFBUP) is the main diagnostic method for tear film-oriented therapy (TFOT) of dry eye. This prospective, observational study examined TFBUPs in 154 eyes/sides from 78 patients with thyroid eye disease (TED) who met the diagnostic criteria for dry eye in Japan. TFBUPs were classified as area, line, spot, dimple, and random breaks. Results for the status of TED and dry eye were compared between the TFBUPs. Consequently, line, spot, dimple, and random breaks were observed in 80 (51.9%), 29 (18.8%), 10 (6.5%), and 35 eyes (22.7%) while no eyes showed area breaks. The random break group had the highest incidence of lid lag/Graefe sign and superior limbic keratoconjunctivitis (SLK) (P  less then  0.050). Although the incidence of each TFBUP is almost equal in patients with simple dry eye without TED, line breaks were more frequently observed in TED. In addition, while random breaks in simple dry eye are usually only associated with minor ocular surface damages, those in TED were associated with a higher incidence of concomitant SLK.
