Ten patients (62.5%) underwent chemotherapy alone, consisting of CHOP alone in one case and Rituximab-CHOP (R-CHOP) in 9 cases (Group B). As primary study endpoints of the study, overall survival (OS) and progression-free survival (PFS) were considered.

We reviewed the registry of new cancer patients who presented to the Children's of Mississippi Center for Cancer and Blood Disorders and showed the average number of new pediatric cancer diagnoses dropped during the initial COVID-19 months and rose significantly in June 2020. We must encourage families to seek health care when needed and keep scheduled appointments for routine vaccinations and health maintenance as we know the long-term sequela of delaying health maintenance far outweighs risks at present.
    For many persons worldwide, mental health is inseparably linked with spirituality or religion, yet psychiatrists have repeatedly expressed doubts regarding their preparedness to address patients' spirituality or religion appropriately. In recent decades, medical educators have developed and implemented curricula for teaching spiritual and religious (S&R) competencies to psychiatry residents. The authors reviewed the literature to understand the scope and effectiveness of these educational initiatives.

    The authors searched eight databases to identify studies for a scoping review and a systematic review. The scoping review explored educational approaches (topics, methods) used in psychiatry residency training programs to teach S&R competencies. The systematic review examined changes in psychiatry trainees' competencies and/or in patient outcomes following exposure to these educational interventions.

    Twelve studies met criteria for inclusion in the scoping review. All reported providing residents wassociation between teaching S&R competencies to psychiatry residents and patient appointment attendance merits further study. Future trainings should supplement classroom learning with experiential approaches and incorporate objective measures of resident competence.

    A multicenter retrospective cohort analysis was conducted for all PCCM trainees enrolled in ACGME-accredited PCCM fellowship programs in 2017-2018 who had complete prior IM milestone ratings from 2014-2017. Only professionalism and interpersonal and communication skills (ICS) were included based on shared anchors between IM and PCCM milestones. All payments received per residency program director over the years 2014 to 2018 were extracted, including amount in U.S. dollars, payment year, and nature of payment (research versus general payments). Total payments (research plus general payments) received over the 5 years were added up per residency program director. Only personal payments were included.

    Overall, 74% (3,465/4,686) of all residency program directors received one or more personal payments, totaling $77,058,139, with a median of $216 (interquartile range $0-$2,150) and a mean of $16,444 (standard deviation $183,061) per residency program director over the 5 years.

Besides, the unique 3D core-shell microcavity structure maintains the multiple reflections of sunlight inside the catalysts, which greatly improves the sunlight utilization upon photocatalysis. An optimized photocatalytic hydrogen production rate of 560 µmol h-1g-1 under near-infrared light (>820 nm) is achieved. A possible photocatalytic mechanism is proposed based on a series of experimental characterizations and theoretical calculations, this work provides a new sight to design high-quantity BP-based full-spectrum photocatalysts for solar energy conversion.
    Some ions can prevent bubbles from coalescing in water. The Gibbs-Marangoni pressure has been proposed as an explanation of this phenomenon. This repulsive pressure occurs during thin film drainage whenever surface enhanced or surface depleted solutes are present. However, bubble coalescence inhibition is known to depend on which particular combination of ions are present in a peculiar and unexplained way. This dependence can be explained by the electrostatic surface potential created by the distribution of ions at the interface, which will alter the natural surface propensity of the ions and hence the Gibbs-Marangoni pressure.

    A generalised form of the Gibbs-Marangoni pressure is derived for a mixture of solutes and the modified Poisson-Boltzmann equation is used to calculate this pressure for five different electrolyte solutions made up of four different ions.

    Combining ions with differing surface propensities, i.e., one enhanced and one depleted, creates a significant electrostatic surface potential which dampens the natural surface propensity of these ions, resulting in a reduced Gibbs-Marangoni pressure, which allows bubble coalescence. This mechanism explains why the ability of electrolytes to inhibit bubble coalescence is correlated with surface tension for pure electrolytes but not for mixed electrolytes.

Herein, the CoZn/C@MoS2@polypyrrole (PPy) composites were prepared through MOF self-template method. The MoS2 sheets and PPy shell incorporated for optimizing impedance matching of two-dimensional (2D) CoZn/C composites. The introduction of MoS2 sheets and PPy shell endowed the composites with enhanced microwave absorption. The as-prepared CoZn/C@MoS2@PPy composites showed a minimum reflection loss (RL) of -49.18 dB with the thickness of 1.5 mm. In addition, the effective absorption bandwidth (EAB, RL values exceeding -10 dB) covered 4.56 GHz, which showed greater performances than CoZn/C composites under a lower thickness ( less then 2 mm). This work not only provides a facile route for fabricating MOF-derived carbon-based composites as microwave absorbers, but also broadens the application of MOF materials.

  • Evoked potential monitoring is believed to prevent neurologic injury in various surgical settings; however, its clinical effect has not been scrutinized. It was hypothesized that an automated nerve monitor can minimize intraoperative nerve injury and thereby improve clinical outcomes in patients undergoing shoulder arthroplasty.

    A prospective, blinded, parallel group, superiority design, single-center, randomized controlled study was conducted. Study participants were equally randomized into either the automated nerve-monitored or the blinded monitored groups. The primary outcome was intraoperative nerve injury burden as assessed by the cumulative duration of nerve alerts. Secondary outcomes were neurologic deficits and functional scores of the operative arm, and the quality of life index (Euro Quality of life-5 domain-5 level score) at postoperative weeks 2, 6, and 12.

    From September 2018 to July 2019, 213 patients were screened, of whom 200 were randomized. There was no statistically significant difference in the duration of nerve alerts between the automated nerve-monitored and control groups (median [25th, 75th interquartile range] 1 [0, 18] and 5 [0, 26.5]; Hodges-Lehman difference [95% CI] 0 [0 to 1] min; P = 0.526). There were no statistically significant differences in secondary outcomes between groups. However, in the ancillary analysis, there were reductions in neurologic deficits and improvements in quality of life index occurring in both groups over the course of the study period.

    Protection from nerve injury is a shared responsibility between surgeons and anesthesiologists. Although a progressive improvement of clinical outcomes were observed over the course of the study in both groups as a consequence of the real-time feedback provided by the automated nerve monitor, this trial did not demonstrate that automated nerve monitoring by itself changes important clinical outcomes compared with no monitoring.

    Few data exist on the association between increased BMI and response to conventional synthetic disease-modifying anti-rheumatic drugs (csDMARDs) in rheumatoid arthritis (RA).We aimed to explore the association between increased (overweight or obese) BMI on csDMARD-prescribing, methotrexate-dose and disease activity over 12-months.

    Participants in an international RA database were stratified into early (<1year post-diagnosis) and established RA. EULAR response, DAS28 remission and treatments were recorded at baseline, 6-months and 12-months. Increased BMI was explored in early and established RA, as predictors of good EULAR response, DAS28 remission, number of csDMARDs and methotrexate-dose, using logistic and linear regression.

    Data from 1313 patients, 44.3% with early RA, were examined. In early RA, increased BMI was not significantly associated with remission. In established RA, obese patients on monotherapy were significantly less likely to achieve good EULAR response or DAS28 remission at 6 monthatment remains important, particularly in those with increased BMI where response in established disease may be attenuated.The fungus Exophiala jeanselmei strain KUFI-6N produces a unique cycloalkanone monooxygenase (ExCAMO) that displays an uncommon substrate spectrum of Baeyer-Villiger oxidation of 4-10-membered ring ketones. We found that plant growth modified the eukaryotic community in soil, as diversity comparisons between maize rhizosphere and unplanted soil revealed significantly different eukaryotic composition. Various genera of nematodes and fungi, predominantly bacterial feeding nematodes and mycorrhizal fungi among other taxa, were increased in the rhizosphere samples. We also observed that maize genotype differentially shaped the relative abundance of the following fungal families in the rhizosphere Acaulosporaceae, Aspergillaceae, Chaetomiaceae, Claroideoglomeraceae, Corticiaceae, Mortierellaceae, Trichocomaceae and Trichomeriaceae. Thus, plant genotype has a selective influence on establishing fungal communities in the rhizosphere. For over a decade novel P2Y12 inhibitors, which have increased specificity, potency and efficacy have been available, prompting studies which have tested whether these newer agents can be used in aspirin-free anti-platelet regimens to augment clinical benefits in patients post-PCI. Among these studies, the GLOBAL LEADERS trial is the largest by cohort size, and so far has provided a wealth of evidence in a variety of clinical settings and patient groups.   • The identification of genomic regions associated with reproductive traits as well as their biological processes allows a better understanding of the phenotypic variability of these traits. This information could be applied to animal breeding programs to accelerate genetic gain. The aim of this study was to evaluate the association between single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNP) with a scrotal circumference at 365 days of age (SC365) and at 450 days of age (SC450), gestation length (GL) as a calf trait, age at first calving (AFC), accumulated productivity (ACP), heifer early calving until 30 months (HC30), and stayability (STAY) traits, in order to identify candidate genes and biological pathways associated with reproductive traits in Nelore cattle. The data set consisted of pedigree, phenotypes, and genotypes of Nelore cattle from the "Associação Nacional de Criadores e Pesquisadores" (ANCP). The association analyses were performed using the Weighted Single-Step Genome-Wide Association method; the regions, consisting of 10 consecutive SNP, which explained more than 0.5% of additive genetic variance, were considered as a significant association. A total of 3, 6, 7, 5, 10, 25, and 12 windows were associated with SC355, SC450, GL, AFC, ACP, HC30, and STAY, respectively. The results revealed genes with important functions for reproductive traits, such as fertility and precocity. Some genes were associated with more than one trait, among them CAMK1D, TASP1, ACOXL, RAB11FIP5, and SFXN5. Moreover, the genes were enriched in functional terms, like negative regulation of fat cell differentiation, fatty acid alpha-oxidation, and sphingolipids signaling pathway. The identification of the genes associated with the traits, as well as genes enriched in the terms and pathway mentioned above, should contribute to future biological validation studies and may be used as candidate genes in Nelore breeding programs.In recent years, in addition to water resources' quantity, their quality has also received **** attention. In this study, the quality of the urban water distribution network in northwestern Iran was evaluated using the water quality index (WQI) method. Then, some important trace elements were investigated, and finally, the health risk assessment was evaluated for both carcinogenic elements (Ni, Cd, Cr, Pb, and As) and non-carcinogenic elements (Ca, Mg, Na, K, F, NO3, and Cu) using carcinogenic risk (CR) and hazard quotient (HQ), respectively. In the present study, the WQI was calculated based on both World Health Organization (WHO) and Iranian drinking water standards. Comparing the results of these standards revealed that the WQI based on the Iranian standard was slightly higher. Regarding the calculated WQI for the study region, the status of water quality for drinking consumption is in the good water quality class (25 less then WQI less then 50). It was observed that Cu and Cd have the highest and lowest concentrations in all sampling points, respectively. Hazard Index (HI) results showed that the non-carcinogenic substances studied had a low risk for both adults and children ( less then 1.0). However, the CR results showed that Ni, Cd, and As were above the desired level for both children and adults. We observed lower transcript levels of miR-15a-5p, miR-497a-5p, and miR-511a-5p in the hippocampus and hypothalamus of susceptible **** compared to resilient ****, suggesting that the expression of these miRNAs could discriminate the two different phenotypes of stress-exposed ****. These miRNA variations could contribute, individually or synergically, to the inversely correlated transcript levels of FKBP5 and BDNF. Conversely, in the medial prefrontal cortex, downregulation of miR-15a-5p, miR-511-5p, and let-7d-5p was observed both in susceptible and resilient ****, and not accompanied by changes in their mRNA targets. Furthermore, miRNA expression in the different brain areas correlated to stress-induced behavioral scores (arousal score, avoidance-like score, social memory score and PTSD-like score), suggesting a linear connection between miRNA-based epigenetic modulation and stress-induced phenotypes.     The identification of genomic regions associated with reproductive traits as well as their biological processes allows a better understanding of the phenotypic variability of these traits. This information could be applied to animal breeding programs to accelerate genetic gain. The aim of this study was to evaluate the association between single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNP) with a scrotal circumference at 365 days of age (SC365) and at 450 days of age (SC450), gestation length (GL) as a calf trait, age at first calving (AFC), accumulated productivity (ACP), heifer early calving until 30 months (HC30), and stayability (STAY) traits, in order to identify candidate genes and biological pathways associated with reproductive traits in Nelore cattle. The data set consisted of pedigree, phenotypes, and genotypes of Nelore cattle from the "Associação Nacional de Criadores e Pesquisadores" (ANCP). The association analyses were performed using the Weighted Single-Step Genome-Wide Association method; the regions, consisting of 10 consecutive SNP, which explained more than 0.5% of additive genetic variance, were considered as a significant association. A total of 3, 6, 7, 5, 10, 25, and 12 windows were associated with SC355, SC450, GL, AFC, ACP, HC30, and STAY, respectively. The results revealed genes with important functions for reproductive traits, such as fertility and precocity. Some genes were associated with more than one trait, among them CAMK1D, TASP1, ACOXL, RAB11FIP5, and SFXN5. Moreover, the genes were enriched in functional terms, like negative regulation of fat cell differentiation, fatty acid alpha-oxidation, and sphingolipids signaling pathway. In this study, the quality of the urban water distribution network in northwestern Iran was evaluated using the water quality index (WQI) method. Then, some important trace elements were investigated, and finally, the health risk assessment was evaluated for both carcinogenic elements (Ni, Cd, Cr, Pb, and As) and non-carcinogenic elements (Ca, Mg, Na, K, F, NO3, and Cu) using carcinogenic risk (CR) and hazard quotient (HQ), respectively. In the present study, the WQI was calculated based on both World Health Organization (WHO) and Iranian drinking water standards. Comparing the results of these standards revealed that the WQI based on the Iranian standard was slightly higher. Regarding the calculated WQI for the study region, the status of water quality for drinking consumption is in the good water quality class (25 less then WQI less then 50). It was observed that Cu and Cd have the highest and lowest concentrations in all sampling points, respectively. Hazard Index (HI) results showed that the non-carcinogenic substances studied had a low risk for both adults and children ( less then 1.0). However, the CR results showed that Ni, Cd, and As were above the desired level for both children and adults.     PubMed, Embase, Web of Science, and Cochrane Library were searched for randomized controlled trials (RCTs) from their inception to 3 June 2020, using keywords related to rupture of the Achilles tendon and rehabilitation. Data extraction was undertaken by independent reviewers and subgroup analyses were performed based on the form of treatment. Risk ratios (RRs) and weighted mean differences (WMDs) (with 95% confidence intervals (CIs)) were used as summary association measures.

    We included 19 trials with a total of 1,758 patients. There was no difference between the re-rupture rate (RR 0.84 (95% CI 0.56 to 1.28); p = 0.423), time to return to work (WMD -1.29 (95% CI -2.63 to 0.05); p = 0.060), and sporting activity (WMD -1.50 (95% CI -4.36 to 1.37); p = 0.306) between the early functional rehabilitation and the traditional immobilization treatment strategies. Early rehabilitation up to 12 weeks yielded significantly better Achilles tendon Total Rupture Scores ((ATRS) WMD 5.11 (95% CI 2.10 to 8.12); p < 0.001). The current mainstay of therapy is endovascular treatment. We present a case of restrictive type of CS-DAVF in a 75-year-old male who presented with right eye symptoms. He was treated with embolisation using trans-radial artery access for angiographic runs and a median cubital vein access navigating into the cavernous sinus for coil deployment. This technique completely avoids the conventional technique of a femoral approach and confines all access to the arm. Therefore, there are less risks and complications associated with an arm access, improves patients' comfort and mobility post procedure. Transradial artery and cubital vein access allows for a safe and convenient alternative technique using the arm as compared with conventional transfemoral approach for treatment of CS-DAVF.

  • Accurate measurement of object volumes using computed tomography is often important but can be challenging, especially for finely convoluted objects with severe marginal blurring from volume averaging. We aimed to test the accuracy of a simple method for volumetry by constructing, scanning and analyzing a phantom object with these characteristics which consisted of a cluster of small lucite beads embedded in petroleum jelly. Our method involves drawing simple regions of interest containing the entirety of the object and a portion of the surrounding material and using its density, along with the densities of pure lucite and petroleum jelly and the slice thickness to calculate the volume of the object in each slice. Comparison of our results with the object's true volume showed the technique to be highly accurate, irrespective of slice thickness, image noise, reconstruction planes, spatial resolution and variations in regions of interest. We conclude that the method can be easily used for accurate volumetry in clinical and research scans without the need for specialized volumetry computer programs.One of the leading causes of obesity associated with oxidative stress (OS) is excessive consumption of nutrients, especially fast-foods, and a sedentary lifestyle, characterized by the ample accumulation of lipid in adipose tissue (AT). When the body needs energy, the lipid is broken down into glycerol (G) and free fatty acids (FFA) during the lipolysis process and transferred to various tissues in the body. Materials secreted from AT, especially adipocytokines (interleukin (IL)-1β, IL-6, and tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α)) and reactive oxygen species (ROS), are impressive in causing inflammation and OS of AT. There are several ways to improve obesity, but researchers have highly regarded the use of antioxidant supplements due to their neutralizing properties in removing ROS. In this review, we have examined the AT response to OS to antioxidant supplements focusing on animal studies. The results are inconsistent due to differences in the study duration and diversity in animals (strain, age, and sex). Therefore, there is a need for different studies, especially in humans. The persisting Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic and limited vaccine supply has led to a shift in global health priorities to expand vaccine coverage. Relying on severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) molecular testing alone cannot reveal the infection proportion, which could play a critical role in vaccination prioritization. We evaluated the utility of a combination orthogonal serological testing (COST) algorithm alongside RT-PCR to quantify prevalence with the aim of identifying candidate patient clusters to receive single and/or delayed vaccination. Previous studies have classified human tumors using a large-scale RNA profiling and supervised Machine Learning (ML) algorithms to construct a molecular-based classification of carcinoma cells from breast, bladder, adenocarcinoma, colorectal, gastro esophagus, kidney, liver, lung, ovarian, pancreas, and prostate tumors. These datasets are collectively known as the 11_tumor database, although this database has been used in several works in the ML field, no comparative studies of different algorithms can be found in the literature. On the other hand, advances in both hardware and software technologies have fostered considerable improvements in the precision of solutions that use ML, such as Deep Learning (DL). In this study, we compare the most widely used algorithms in classical ML and DL to classify the tumors described in the 11_tumor database. We obtained tumor identification accuracies between 90.6% (Logistic Regression) and 94.43% (Convolutional Neural Networks) using k-fold cross-validation. Also, we show how a tuning process may or may not significantly improve algorithms' accuracies. ERGM is a generative statistical network model whose ultimate goal is to present a subset of networks with particular characteristics as a statistical distribution. In the context of ERGMs, these graph's characteristics are called statistics or configurations. Most of the time they are the number of repeated subgraphs across the graphs. Some examples include the number of triangles or the number of cycle of an arbitrary length. Also, any other census of the graph, as with the edge density, can be considered as one of the graph's statistics. In this review paper, after explaining the building blocks and classic methods of ERGMs, we have reviewed their newly presented approaches and research papers. Further, we have conducted a comprehensive study on the applications of ERGMs in many research areas which to the best of our knowledge has not been done before. This review paper can be used as an introduction for scientists from various disciplines whose aim is to use ERGMs in some networked data in their field of expertise.Skin lesion border irregularity is considered an important clinical feature for the early diagnosis of melanoma, representing the B feature in the ABCD rule. In this article we propose an automated approach for skin lesion border irregularity detection. The approach involves extracting the skin lesion from the image, detecting the skin lesion border, measuring the border irregularity, training a Convolutional Neural Network and Gaussian naive Bayes ensemble, to the automatic detection of border irregularity, which results in an objective decision on whether the skin lesion border is considered regular or irregular. The approach achieves outstanding results, obtaining an accuracy, sensitivity, specificity, and F-score of 93.6%, 100%, 92.5% and 96.1%, respectively.The use of end-to-end data mining methodologies such as CRISP-DM, KDD process, and SEMMA has grown substantially over the past decade. However, little is known as to how these methodologies are used in practice. In particular, the question of whether data mining methodologies are used 'as-is' or adapted for specific purposes, has not been thoroughly investigated. This article addresses this gap via a systematic literature review focused on the context in which data mining methodologies are used and the adaptations they undergo. The literature review covers 207 peer-reviewed and 'grey' publications. We find that data mining methodologies are primarily applied 'as-is'. At the same time, we also identify various adaptations of data mining methodologies and we note that their number is growing rapidly. The dominant adaptations pattern is related to methodology adjustments at a granular level (modifications) followed by extensions of existing methodologies with additional elements. Further, we identify two recurrent purposes for adaptation (1) adaptations to handle Big Data technologies, tools and environments (technological adaptations); and (2) adaptations for context-awareness and for integrating data mining solutions into business processes and IT systems (organizational adaptations). In this work, we take all the advantages of this technology to build a blockchain-based authentication system (called the Vietnamese Educational Certification blockchain, which stands for VECefblock) to deal with the delimitation of fake certificate issues in Vietnam. In this direction, firstly, we categorize and analyze blockchain research and application trends to make out our contributions in this domain. Our motivating factor is to curb fake certificates in Vietnam by applying the suitability of blockchain technology to the problem domain. This study proposed some blockchain-based application development principles in order to build a step by step VECefblock with the following procedures designing overall architecture along with business processes, data mapping structure and implementing the decentralized application that can meet the specific Vietnamese requirements.

  • Anthropogenic deterioration of the global nitrogen (N) cycle emerges mainly from overuse of inorganic N fertilizers in nutrient-limited cropping systems. To counteract a further dysregulation of the N cycle, we need to improve plant nitrogen use efficiency. This aim may be reached via unravelling all plant mechanisms to access soil N, with special attention to the dominating high-molecular-mass N pool. Traditionally, we believe that inorganic N is the only plant-available N pool, however, more recent studies point to acquisition of organic N compounds, i.e., amino acids, short peptides, and proteins. The least known mechanism of plants to increase the N uptake is a direct increase of soil proteolysis via root-derived proteases. This paper provides a review of the knowledge about root-derived proteases and also controversies behind this phenomenon.The purpose of this study was to address the lack of knowledge regarding the stable isotopic composition of beef from zebu cattle reared in tropical Africa. Sixty beef carcasses belonging to the most common zebu breeds (Goudali, white Fulani, and red Mbororo) were selected and classified according to their subcutaneous fat color (white, cream or yellow). The stable isotope ratios of five bioelements-H, O, C, N, and S-in muscle fractions and the fatty acids composition were analyzed. Zebu meat from Cameroon shows peculiar δ13C values, related to the almost exclusive intake of grazed tropical grasses with photosynthetic cycle C4. It also shows δ2H and δ18O values higher than those reported in other areas of the world and correlated with the isotopic composition of animal drinking water. The white subcutaneous fat ("white type") zebu showed higher δ2H and lower δ13C than the "yellow type", that is correlated with a higher content of polyunsaturated fatty acid (PUFA) and a lower amount of saturated fatty acid (SFA) and monounsaturated fatty acid (MUFA). Multielement analysis seems to provide promising results for tracing the regional origin of Cameroon beef and some aspects of the livestock system, such as the nutritional status of the animals.As violent clashes between doctors and patients in China intensify, patient dissatisfaction has been identified as a major concern in the current healthcare reform in China. The multilevel analyses demonstrated that participants' utilization of paid family doctor services decreased the risk of occurring dissatisfaction; dissatisfaction was less focused on females; having chronic diseases increased the risk of dissatisfaction. This study suggests promotion of family doctor services can effectively reduce middle-aged and elderly dissatisfaction with the local medical services. Simultaneously, the mesenchymal stem/stromal cell (MSC) secretome is osteoinductive, promoting scaffold colonization by cells, proliferation, and differentiation. The present paper combines 3D-printed PCL scaffolds with lyosecretome, a freeze-dried formulation of ****secretome, containing proteins and extracellular vesicles (EVs). We designed a lyosecretome 3D-printed scaffold by two loading strategies (i) ****secretome adsorption on 3D-printed scaffold and (ii) coprinting of PCL with an alginate-based hydrogel containing ****secretome (at two alginate concentrations, i.e., 6% or 10% w/v). A fast release of proteins and EVs (a burst of 75% after 30 min) was observed from scaffolds obtained by absorption loading, while coprinting of PCL and hydrogel, encapsulating lyosecretome, allowed a homogeneous loading of protein and EVs and a controlled slow release. For both loading modes, protein and EV release was governed by diffusion as revealed by the kinetic release study. The secretome's diffusion is influenced by alginate, its concentration, or its cross-linking modes with protamine due to the higher steric hindrance of the polymer chains. Moreover, it is possible to further slow down protein and EV release by changing the scaffold shape from parallelepiped to cylindrical. In conclusion, it is possible to control the release kinetics of proteins and EVs by changing the composition of the alginate hydrogel, the scaffold's shape, and hydrogel cross-linking. Such scaffold prototypes for bone regenerative medicine are now available for further testing of safety and efficacy.COVID-19 vaccines have been developed with unprecedented speed which would not have been possible without decades of fundamental research on delivery nanotechnology. Lipid-based nanoparticles have played a pivotal role in the successes of COVID-19 vaccines and many other nanomedicines, such as Doxil® and Onpattro®, and have therefore been considered as the frontrunner in nanoscale drug delivery systems. In this review, we aim to highlight the progress in the development of these lipid nanoparticles for various applications, ranging from cancer nanomedicines to COVID-19 vaccines. The lipid-based nanoparticles discussed in this review are liposomes, niosomes, transfersomes, solid lipid nanoparticles, and nanostructured lipid carriers. We particularly focus on the innovations that have obtained regulatory approval or that are in clinical trials. We also discuss the physicochemical properties required for specific applications, highlight the differences in requirements for the delivery of different cargos, and introduce current challenges that need further development.

Lipid-based nanoparticles have played a pivotal role in the successes of COVID-19 vaccines and many other nanomedicines, such as Doxil® and Onpattro®, and have therefore been considered as the frontrunner in nanoscale drug delivery systems. In this review, we aim to highlight the progress in the development of these lipid nanoparticles for various applications, ranging from cancer nanomedicines to COVID-19 vaccines. The lipid-based nanoparticles discussed in this review are liposomes, niosomes, transfersomes, solid lipid nanoparticles, and nanostructured lipid carriers. We particularly focus on the innovations that have obtained regulatory approval or that are in clinical trials. We also discuss the physicochemical properties required for specific applications, highlight the differences in requirements for the delivery of different cargos, and introduce current challenges that need further development.
