However, recent studies of sponges, jellyfish, and anemones have revealed the potential for this mutualistic relationship to shift to parasitism under stressful conditions. Over a period of eight weeks, we compared the physiological conditions of both inoculated and aposymbiotic anemones (Exaiptasia pallida) that were either fed or starved. By the sixth week, both fed groups of anemones were significantly larger than their starved counterparts. Moreover, inoculated and starved anemones tended to disintegrate into "tissue *****" within eight weeks, and 25% of the samples died; in contrast, starved aposymbiotic anemones required six months to form tissue *****, and no anemones from this group died. To explore the relationship between body mass index (BMI) and clinicopathological characteristics in patients with papillary thyroid carcinoma (PTC).
The clinical data of 1,579 patients with PTC, admitted to our hospital from May 2016 to March 2017, were retrospectively analyzed. According to the different BMI of patients, it can be divided into underweight recombination (BMI < 18.5 kg/m), normal body recombination (18.5 ≤ BMI < 24.0 kg/m
), overweight recombination (24.0 ≤ BMI < 28.0 kg/m

). The clinicopathological characteristics of PTC in patients with different BMIs group were compared.
In our study, the risk for extrathyroidal extension (ETE), advanced T stage (T III/IV), and advanced tumor-node-metastasis stage (TNM III/IV) in the overweight group were higher, with OR (odds ratio) = 1.99(1.41-2.81), OR = 2.01(1.43-2.84), OR = 2.94(1.42-6.07), respectively, relative to the normal weight group. The risk for ETE and T III/IV stage in the obese group were higher, with OR = 1.82(1.23-2.71) and OR = 1.82(1.23-2.70), respectively, relative to the normal weight group.

SARS-CoV-2 is a novel coronavirus that causes COVID-19 infection, with a closest known relative found in bats. For this virus, hundreds of genomes have been sequenced. This data provides insights into SARS-CoV-2 adaptations, determinants of pathogenicity and mutation patterns. A comparison between patterns of mutations that occurred before and after SARS-CoV-2 jumped to human hosts may reveal important evolutionary consequences of zoonotic transmission.
We used publically available complete genomes of SARS-CoV-2 to calculate relative frequencies of single nucleotide variations. These frequencies were compared with relative substitutions frequencies between SARS-CoV-2 and related animal coronaviruses. A similar analysis was performed for human coronaviruses SARS-CoV and HKU1.
We found a 9-fold excess of G-U transversions among SARS-CoV-2 mutations over relative substitution frequencies between SARS-CoV-2 and a close relative coronavirus from bats (RaTG13). This suggests that mutation patterns of SARS-CoV-2 have changed after transmission to humans. The excess of G-U transversions was **** smaller in a similar analysis for SARS-CoV and non-existent for HKU1. Remarkably, we did not find a similar excess of complementary C-A mutations in SARS-CoV-2. We discuss possible explanations for these observations.

These compounds can inhibit both mouse and human osteoclast activity. In particular, 4-chlorobenzyl-4-hydroxy-2-phenyl-1-thia-2,7-diazaspiro[4,4]nonane 1,1-dioxide (compound E197) prevented pathological bone loss in ****. Most interestingly, treatment with E197 did not affect osteoclast and osteoblast numbers and hence did not impair bone formation. Ab initio calculations of the structure of NADH in water and methanol and of β-nicotinamide mononucleotide (NMNH) in vacuum have been carried out for clarifying the role of decay time heterogeneity. The main results obtained are as follows. An explanation of the heterogeneity in the measured fluorescence decay times in NADH has been suggested based on the influence of the internal molecular electric field in the nicotinamide ring on nonradiative decay rates. We suggest that different charge distributions in the cis and trans configurations result in different internal electrostatic field distributions that lead to the decay time heterogeneity.

Angiotensin-converting enzyme 2 (ACE2), the host cell-binding site for SAR-CoV-2, poses two-fold drug development problems. First, the role of ACE2 itself is still a matter of investigation, and no specific drugs are available targeting ACE2. Second, as a consequence of SARS-CoV-2 interaction with ACE2, there is an impairment of the renin-angiotensin system (RAS) involved in the functioning of vital organs like the heart, kidney, brain, and lungs. In developing antiviral drugs for COVID-19, ACE2, RNA-dependent RNA polymerase (RdRp), and the specific enzymes involved in the viral and cellular gene expression have been the primary targets. SARS-CoV-2 being a new virus with unusually high mortality, there has been a need to get medicines in an emergency, and the drug repurposing has been a primary strategy. Considering extensive mortality and morbidity throughout the world, we have made a maiden attempt to discover the drugs interacting with RAS and identify the lead compounds from herbal plants using molecular docking. Both host ACE2 and viral RNA-dependent RNA polymerase (RdRp) and ORF8 appear to be the primary targets for the treatment of COVID-19. While the drug repurposing of currently approved drugs seems to be one strategy for the treatment of COVID-19, purposing phytochemicals may be another essential strategy for discovering lead compounds. We reported health outcomes, quality-adjusted life years (QALYs), healthcare costs, and net health benefit (NHB) to measure cost-effectiveness per cohort of 100,000 patients.
Treating everyone with no prior testing was the most cost-effective strategy, at a cost-effectiveness threshold of $50,000/QALY, in oost cost-effective. However, consideration of whether treatment is appropriate in the absence of diagnostic confirmation should be taken into account for decision-making by clinicians and policymakers.
Lebanon boosts one of the highest pharmacists to population ratios globally (20.3/10,000). The aim of this study is to examine stakeholders' perspectives on the current pharmacist workforce challenges and the necessary measures to support the profession.
The research team carried out a series of semi-structured interviews with twenty-one key stakeholders within the pharmacy profession in Lebanon. We categorized stakeholders according to their experience as policy makers, practitioners, academicians, and media experts. The interview gaintain profitability and exercise their full scope of practice.
The poor pharmacy workforce planning and regulation is significantly weakening the pharmacy profession in Lebanon. A concerted effort between the various stakeholders is necessary to enhance workforce planning, regulate supply, optimize the integration of pharmacists into work sectors of need, and improve the financial and professional wellbeing of pharmacists in Lebanon.

The optimal surgical management strategy for para-aortic lymph node (PALN) metastasis has not attracted as **** attention as surgery for liver or lung metastasis. The purpose of this retrospective study was to evaluate the oncologic outcomes after synchronous resection of PALN metastasis in left-sided colon and rectal cancer.
Between January 1986 and August 2016, 29 patients with pathologically positive PALN metastases who underwent curative resection at our hospital were retrospectively reviewed. We examined clinicopathological characteristics, long-term oncologic outcomes, and factors related to favorable prognosis in these patients.
The 3-year overall survival and recurrence-free survival (RFS) rates were 50.5% and 17.2%, respectively. In total, 6 (20.7%) patients experienced no recurrence in the 3 years after surgery, while postoperative complications were seen in 9 (31.0%) patients. The 3-year RFS rate was significantly better in the pM1a group than in the pM1b/pM1c group (26.3% and 0.0%, respectively, p = 0.032).

Between 2008-2018, we performed a population-based time-series study using official hospitalization and death data due to stroke, in individuals aged 10-49 years, from Southeast and South, Brazil. Data were based on reports from the Unified Health System of Hospital Information System and Mortality Information System. Stroke was defined by the International Classification of Diseases, 10th revision (I60-I63). A Prais-Winsten regression model was performed and the Annual Percentage Change was calculated.
In total, 78,123 hospitalizations of individuals aged 10-49 years were recorded, of which 59,448 (76%) resulted from hemorrhagic stroke (HS). The hospitalizations for HS was significantly decreased (- 4.37%) among men and women in both regions. The hospitalizations for ischemic stroke (IS) was flat, except between 2011 and 2018, when Iand mortality of HS and a flat trend for IS in developed regions of Brazil. The recent period (2011-2018) demonstrated increasing rates in the hospitalizations of IS in both regions and genders. The mortality rates for HS and IS decreased between 2008-2018 in Southeast and South Brazil for both genders.Koalas (Phascolarctos cinereus) are cryptic and currently face regional extinction. The direct detection (physical sighting) of individuals is required to improve conservation management strategies. We provide a comparative assessment of three survey methods for the direct detection of koalas systematic spotlighting (Spotlight), remotely piloted aircraft system thermal imaging (RPAS), and the refined diurnal radial search component of the spot assessment technique (SAT). Each survey method was repeated on the same morning with independent observers (0300-1200 hrs) for a total of 10 survey occasions at sites with fixed boundaries (28-76 ha) in Port Stephens (n = 6) and Gilead (n = 1) in New South Wales between May and July 2019. Koalas were directly detected on 22 occasions during 7 of 10 comparative surveys (Spotlight n = 7; RPAS n = 14; and SAT n = 1), for a total of 12 unique individuals (Spotlight n = 4; RPAS n = 11; SAT n = 1). Pancreatic rest (PR) is an ectopic pancreatic lesion that is usually found incidentally on endoscopy or surgery. While most lesions do not have clinical significance, some patients are symptomatic and rarely, PR can predispose to malignancy. With the growing popularity of bariatric surgery, it has been unclear how to manage PR found on screening endoscopies, prior to bariatric surgery. Through review of the current literature, we propose an algorithm for clinicians to evaluate and manage PR found on screening endoscopies prior to bariatric surgery.
We performed a literature search in PubMed pertaining to PR, clinical characteristics, risk of malignant transformation, endoscopic characteristics, histological descriptions, and resection techniques. Using the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA), we found 33 published articles from 2001 to 2019, including case reports, case series, retrospective cohorts, and a review paper.

Although colorectal endoscopic submucosal dissection (ESD) has become a standardized procedure worldwide, the difficulty of the procedure is well known. However, there have been no studies assessing the causes of treatment interruption. The present study aimed to evaluate the factors involved in the interruption of colorectal ESD.
We retrospectively analyzed 1116 consecutive superficial colorectal neoplasms of 1012 patients who were treated with ESD between August 2008 and September 2018. The clinicopathological characteristics and treatment outcomes were analyzed.
Interrupted ESD was reported in 14 lesions (1.3%) of the total study population. Univariate analysis of clinical characteristics indicated that age, 0-I macroscopic-type tumor, and tumor location on the left side colon were risk factors for interruption. Multivariate analysis revealed that 0-I macroscopic-type tumor was the sole preoperative independent risk factor for interruption. Univariate analysis revealed that the presence of muscle-retracting sign (MRS), deep submucosal tumor invasion, and intermediate invasive growth pattern represented the etiology of interruption. Multivariate analysis indicated that MRS can be a sole key sign for the interruption. Additionally, the resectability and curability of 0-I type tumors were significantly inferior to those of predominantly lateral spreading tumors. Observations of 0-I macroscopic-type tumors, MRS, and submucosal deep invasion were significantly more frequent in interrupted cases. Conventional endoscopic images without magnification endoscopy were more associated with interruption than irregular surfaces or Vi pit patterns in cases with 0-I type tumors.

With the growing popularity of bariatric surgery, it has been unclear how to manage PR found on screening endoscopies, prior to bariatric surgery. Through review of the current literature, we propose an algorithm for clinicians to evaluate and manage PR found on screening endoscopies prior to bariatric surgery. We performed a literature search in PubMed pertaining to PR, clinical characteristics, risk of malignant transformation, endoscopic characteristics, histological descriptions, and resection techniques. Using the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA), we found 33 published articles from 2001 to 2019, including case reports, case series, retrospective cohorts, and a review paper. PR is commonly found incidentally in the gasgnant transformation. Symptomatic lesions and those at risk for malignant transformation should be considered for resection. EUS can guide the diagnosis and type of resection, either endoscopically through EMR or ESD or surgically through sleeve gastrectomy or Roux-en-Y gastric bypass (RYGB). Although colorectal endoscopic submucosal dissection (ESD) has become a standardized procedure worldwide, the difficulty of the procedure is well known. However, there have been no studies assessing the causes of treatment interruption. The present study aimed to evaluate the factors involved in the interruption of colorectal ESD. We retrospectively analyzed 1116 consecutive superficial colorectal neoplasms of 1012 patients who were treated with ESD between August 2008 and September 2018. The clinicopathological characteristics and treatment outcomes were analyzed. Interrupted ESD was reported in 14 lesions (1.3%) of the total study population. Univariate analysis of clinical characteristics indicated that age, 0-I macroscopic-type tumor, and tumor location on the left side colon were risk factors for interruption. Multivariate analysis revealed that 0-I macroscopic-type tumor was the sole preoperative independent risk factor for interruption. Univariate analysis revealed that the presence of muscle-retracting sign (MRS), deep submucosal tumor invasion, and intermediate invasive growth pattern represented the etiology of interruption. Multivariate analysis indicated that MRS can be a sole key sign for the interruption. Additionally, the resectability and curability of 0-I type tumors were significantly inferior to those of predominantly lateral spreading tumors. Observations of 0-I macroscopic-type tumors, MRS, and submucosal deep invasion were significantly more frequent in interrupted cases. Reduced neAA concentrations in CP160 decreased ADG and GF. Supplementation of Asp+Asn, Glu, and Glu+Gln to CP160 increased ADG and GF, but not to the level found for CP180. Compared with CP160, addition of Asp increased GF but not ADG. Supplementation of Asp+Asn caused higher ADG and GF than supplementation of Asp alone. The N-utilization efficiency was highest at CP160 and at CP160 supplemented with Ala, Pro, and Glu. Lower N-utilization efficiency was found at CP180 than at CP160, without and with supplemented neAA. The treatment containing NH4Cl presented the lowest ADG, GF, and N-utilization efficiency. To quantify the risks of acute non-postherpetic neuralgia (PHN) zoster complications, to inform vaccination policy.
We conducted a cohort study among unvaccinated immunocompetent adults with incident zoster, and age-, sex- and practice-matched control adults without zoster, using routinely collected health data from the UK Clinical Practice Research Datalink (years 2001 to 2018). Crude attributable risks of complications were estimated as the difference between Kaplan-Meier-estimated 3-month cumulative incidences in patients with zoster vs. controls. We used Cox models to obtain hazard ratios for our primary outcomes in patients with and without zoster. Primary outcomes were ocular, neurological, cutaneous, visceral and zoster-specific complications. We also assessed whether antivirals during acute zoster protected against the complications.

This study examined the validity of childhood depression diagnoses in the Danish Psychiatric Central Research Register (DPCRR) and identified predictors of validity.
A nationwide random sample of 500 children (6-17years) diagnosed with depression between 1996 and 2016 was identified in the DPCRR. Psychiatric hospital records were reviewed and rated using an online checklist. The primary outcome was whether depressive symptoms and functional impairment documented in hospital records justified a depressive disorder diagnosis based on ICD-10 or DSM-5 diagnostic criteria. Diagnostic validity was calculated as the positive predictive value. Binary logistic regression analysis was used to identify potential predictors of diagnostic validity, and these were included in a multiple logistic regression.

High-quality research provides an evidence base for optimal practice care in clinical settings, yet, little is known about the nature and extent of randomized control trials (RCTs) conducted in Australian nursing homes (NHs). Research from other settings and other countries is not necessarily transferable to the Australian NH sector. We sought to identify and describe RCTs conducted in Australia which investigated interventions targeted at improving care for NH residents.
The design of this study comprised a systematic literature search with a narrative review. Studies were included if they were RCTs published after 2000, conducted in an Australian NH, and evaluated a health intervention which may have directly or indirectly benefitted the NH resident.

To qualitatively evaluate the quality of the data collection process used by the Chinese national HIV/AIDS data repository (CRIMS), using a four-dimensional (4D) framework. The process is vital for the acquisition of high-quality data for ending the HIV/AIDS epidemic in China.
The study was carried out in China from September 2014 to April 2015. Stratified convenient sampling was conducted to recruit 28 study participants including health administrators, public health professionals and clinicians. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews with the participants and from field observations in six hospitals. Content analysis was conducted following the 4D Framework.
61 percent of the facilitators and 74 percent of the barriers of the 4D Framework were confirmed in the CRIMS data collection process. The CRIMS achieved better-quality data collection management. The perceived gaps primarily included impractical data collection protocol and invalid quality assessment mechanism for data collection management; weak leadership and unsupportive organizational policy for data collection environment; poor communication and job fatigue for data collection personnel; and inflexibility and inaccessibility of data collection system. Areas for improvement included engaging frontline staff in the design of data collection protocol, standardizing quality assurance procedures, strengthening leadership, recognizing data collector's contributions, and meeting end-users' needs for the CRIMS.
The findings generated knowledge about the quality of the CRIMS data collection process. The 4D Framework has potential as an evaluation tool for decision-makers on the improvement of the public health data collection process.

With the advancement of mobile technologies, patients can access medical and patient educational information anytime and anywhere. Computer-aided patient education has been advocated as a key means of interventions for improving patient knowledge and compliance (i.e., adherence). However, evidence of the efficacy of computer-aided patient education remains relatively limited. For example, little is known about how the latest mobile technologies influence patients' compliance intention and their actual compliance behavior. The objective of this study is to investigate patients' compliance intention and behavior using a personalized mobile patient education system (PMPES) as a novel technological intervention for patients based on rational choice theory (RCT) and the theory of planned behavior (TPB).
We conducted a field survey with 125 actual patients in U.S. who obtained their patient education through PMPES while seeking medical treatment advice from their doctors. We used partial least squares (PLS) regtors associated with RCT and TPB jointly influence patients' actual compliance behavior. Future mobile patient education programs should consider patients' age groups, mixed-gender groups, different medical settings, and cross-cultural contexts.
Overall, the research model explains 69.2 % of the variance in patients' actual compliance behavior. We find our model robust in using RCT as a key theoretical lens for the assessment of patients' compliance intention to follow medical recommendations enabled by the PMPES and delivered to mobile devices. The factors associated with RCT and TPB jointly influence patients' actual compliance behavior. Future mobile patient education programs should consider patients' age groups, mixed-gender groups, different medical settings, and cross-cultural contexts.

Surveys were sent to 628 providers in 34 primary and specialty care clinics approximately 12 weeks after the implementation of phase 1 (April 1, 2018) and phase 2 (July 1, 2018). EHR data were extracted from three months pre- and three months post-implementation of note sharing to determine whether or not note authoring times were affected.
Nearly one-quarter (n = 150) of the responses sent to 628 providers were retained for analysis (23.9 % response rate). A majority (84.7 %) of respondents believed notes were useful vehicles for communication and 73.3 % agreed that making notes available to patients was a good idea. Additionally, 16.0 % of respondents (14.0 % for primary care and 17.0 % for specialists) believed they "spent more time writing/dictating/editing their notes." A comparison of pre-post note authoring time revealed the aggregated primary care median increased 0.14 min (7.93-8.07 min) while aggregated specialty care median was identical (11.6 min).

An Electronic Health Record (EHR) has been introduced to four Irish maternity units, with further implementations planned. Previous studies indicate that healthcare professionals are concerned that EHRs may increase time spent on documentation and medication-related tasks.

An electronic data collection tool was used to collate time spent on direct care, professional communication, reviewing charts, documentation, and medication-related tasks. Interruptions and contact with the patient zone were quantified. Statistical significance was assessed using two-sample proportion tests, two-sample t-tests, and two-sample Wilcoxon rank-sum tests. A Bonferroni correction set significance at p ≤ 0.0025.

There is an urgent need for insecticides with novel modes of action against mosquito vectors. Broflanilide is a meta-diamide, discovered and named Tenebenal™ by Mitsui Chemicals Agro, Inc., which has been identified as a candidate insecticide for use in public health products.
To evaluate its potential for use in public health, Tenebenal™ was screened using an array of methodologies against Anopheles and Aedes strains. Initially it was assessed for intrinsic efficacy by topical application. Tarsal contact bioassays were then conducted to further investigate its efficacy, as well as its potency and speed of action. The potential of the compound for use in indoor residual spray (IRS) applications was investigated by testing the residual efficacy of a prototype IRS formulation on a range of typical house building substrates, and its potential for use in long-lasting insecticidal nets (LLIN) was tested using dipped net samples. Finally, bioassays using well-characterized insecticide-resistant mosquito strainsin laboratory assessment and warrants further investigation into development for the control of pyrethroid-resistant mosquitoes.
Medical doctors with postgraduate training in Global Health and Tropical Medicine (MDGHTM) from the Netherlands, a high-income country with a relatively low caesarean section rate, assist associate clinicians in low-income countries regarding decision-making during labour. Objective of this study was to assess impact of the presence of MDGHTMs in a rural Malawian hospital on caesarean section rate and indications.
This retrospective pre- and post-implementation study was conducted in a rural hospital in Malawi, where MDGHTMs were employed from April 2015. Indications for caesarean section were audited against national protocols and defined as supported or unsupported by these protocols. Caesarean section rates and numbers of unsupported indications for the years 2015 and 2016 per quarter for different staff cadres were assessed by linear regression.
Six hundred forty-five women gave birth by caesarean section in the study period. The caesarean rate dropped from 20.1 to 12.8% (p < 0.05, R

In the present study the blood expression level of inflammatory response and autoimmunity associated long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs) were compared in patients with different chronic respiratory diseases and investigated whether they could be used as biomarkers in these diseases.
In the discovery cohort, the gene expression level of 84 lncRNAs were measured in the blood of 24 adult patients including healthy controls and patients with asthma and COPD. In the replication cohort the expression of 6 selected lncRNAs were measured in 163 subjects including healthy controls and adults with allergic rhinitis, asthma, COPD and children with asthma. It was evaluated whether these lncRNAs can be used as diagnostic biomarkers for any studied disease. With systems biology analysis the biological functions of the selected lncRNAs were predicted.
In the discovery cohort, the mean expression of 27 lncRNAs showed nominally significant differences in at least one comparison. In Laos, the malaria burden remains high despite a significant reduction of cases during the last decade. In the context of the disease elimination by 2030, a nationwide entomological survey was conducted to better understand the distribution, abundance and behaviour of major malaria vectors (Anopheles spp.) in the country.
Mosquito collections were implemented in ten villages from ten provinces during the rainy and dry seasons of 2014 and 2015 by using human landing catch (HLC) and *** bait collection (CBC) methods. After morphological identification in the field, molecular identification of the sibling species of Anopheles mosquitoes from the Funestus, Leucosphyrus, and Maculatus groups were determined using PCR specific alleles. A screening of Plasmodium falciparum and Plasmodium vivax infections in the vectors was carried out by quantitative PCR assays.
A total of 14,146 adult mosquitoes representing 25 different Anopheles species were collected and morphologically identified. Molecular identificatiia vectors were collected between 1000 PM and 500 AM indoors when people are sleeping. Twenty-seven percent of primary and secondary vectors were collected outdoors before 1000 PM or after 500 AM, times when people are usually awake and outdoors. Only two specimens were positive for P. falciparum, one An. aconitus from Phongsaly and one An. minimus from Vientiane Province CONCLUSIONS The results indicate that people living in rural areas in Laos are constantly exposed to malaria vectors throughout the year and specifically outdoors. The use of LLINs/IRS remains important but innovative tools and new strategies are needed to address locally, the early and outdoor malaria transmission. Lack of expertise in general entomological methods may further exacerbate the situation.
Trunk-boring pests (TBPs) are an important type of forest pest, TBPs not only feed on the branches and trunks of trees, but also spread quarantine diseases in forests. However, because the larvae of TBPs live inside the trunk and are well concealed, prevention and control are difficult. The lack of effective control methods leads to the death of many trees in forests. In this study, a novel nanopesticide featuring high bioactivity and slow-release properties was developed to control TBPs. Some of these differences might be utilized as biomarkers and also suggest a possible role of these lncRNAs in the pathomechanism of these diseases. The lncRNAs and the associated pathways are potential therapeutic targets in these diseases, but naturally additional studies are needed for the confirmation of these results. In Laos, the malaria burden remains high despite a significant reduction of cases during the last decade. In the context of the disease elimination by 2030, a nationwide entomological survey was conducted to better understand the distribution, abundance and behaviour of major malaria vectors (Anopheles spp.) in the country. Mosquito collections were implemented in ten villages from ten provinces during the rainy and dry seasons of 2014 and 2015 by using human landing catch (HLC) and cow bait collection (CBC) methods. After morphological identification in the field, molecular identification of the sibling species of Anopheles mosquitoes from the Funestus, Leucosphyrus, and Maculatus groups were determined using PCR specific alleles. A screening of Plasmodium falciparum and Plasmodium vivax infections in the vectors was carried out by quantitative PCR assays. A total of 14,146 adult mosquitoes representing 25 different Anopheles species were collected and morphologically identified. Molecular identificatiia vectors were collected between 1000 PM and 500 AM indoors when people are sleeping. Twenty-seven percent of primary and secondary vectors were collected outdoors before 1000 PM or after 500 AM, times when people are usually awake and outdoors. Only two specimens were positive for P. falciparum, one An. aconitus from Phongsaly and one An. minimus from Vientiane Province CONCLUSIONS The results indicate that people living in rural areas in Laos are constantly exposed to malaria vectors throughout the year and specifically outdoors. The use of LLINs/IRS remains important but innovative tools and new strategies are needed to address locally, the early and outdoor malaria transmission. Lack of expertise in general entomological methods may further exacerbate the situation. Trunk-boring pests (TBPs) are an important type of forest pest, TBPs not only feed on the branches and trunks of trees, but also spread quarantine diseases in forests. However, because the larvae of TBPs live inside the trunk and are well concealed, prevention and control are difficult. The lack of effective control methods leads to the death of many trees in forests. In this study, a novel nanopesticide featuring high bioactivity and slow-release properties was developed to control TBPs. Thiacloprid (THI), which is commonly used to control Coleoptera species, was used as a model pesticide. The oleophobic properties of bovine serum albumin (BSA) were exploited to encapsulate the hydrophobic pesticide THI by self-assembly, and the size of the obtained nanoparticles, THI@BSA·NPs, was approximately 23nm.
