Identification of Baxter's nerve (BN) has proven challenging for less experienced practitioners using ultrasonography due to a lack of adequate landmarks. This study aimed to establish novel, user-friendly anatomical landmarks and to describe useful structures to localize BN.
We examined 10 fresh cadaveric feet and identified the interobserver agreement of measuring three surface landmarks the most medially protruded point on the medial malleolus (P), the navicular tuberosity (Q), and the center of the calcaneus (B). Next, 24 fresh cadaveric feet were used to identify the point of BN entry into the quadratus plantae (QP) muscle, which corresponds to the proximal BN impingement site. The rectangular coordinate system consisted of the origin (point P), X-axis, extension line P-Q, and Y-axis (the perpendicular line to the X-axis). To consider various foot sizes, the X and Y values were divided by the P-Q length and were designated as the ratios X and Y.
Points P and Q showed smaller interobserver differences than that of point B. Ratios X and Y were 61.25 and 99.80%, respectively, for the QP. BN arose from the lateral plantar nerve in 20 of 24 specimens. The adjacent vessel was <3 mm from the entrapment site of BN in 20 of 24 specimens.

However, the instability of perovskite NPs is the most critical unsolved problem that limits their practical application. Here, an extremely stable crosslinked perovskite NP (CPN) is reported that maintains high photoluminescence quantum yield for 1.5 years (>600 d) in air and in harsher liquid environments (e.g., in water, acid, or base solutions, and in various polar solvents), and for more than 100 d under 85 °C and 85% relative humidity without additional encapsulation. Unsaturated hydrocarbons in both the acid and base ligands of NPs are chemically crosslinked with a methacrylate-functionalized matrix, which prevents decomposition of the perovskite crystals. Counterintuitively, water vapor permeating through the crosslinked matrix chemically passivates surface defects in the NPs and reduces nonradiative recombination. To identify and describe publications addressing the agreement between self-reported medication and other data sources among adults and, in a subgroup of studies dealing with cancer patients, seek to identify parameters which are associated with agreement.
A systematic review including a systematic search within five biomedical databases up to February 28, 2019 was conducted as per the PRISMA Statement. Studies and agreement results were described. For a subgroup of studies dealing with cancer, we searched for associations between agreement and patients' characteristics, study design, comparison data source, and self-report modality.
The literature search retrieved 3392 publications. Included articles (n = 120) show heterogeneous agreement. Eighteen publications focused on cancer populations, with relatively good agreement identified in those which analyzed hormone therapy, estrogen, and chemotherapy (n = 11). Agreement was especially good for chemotherapy (proportion correct ≥93.6%, kappa ≥0.88). No distinct associations between agreement and age, education or marital status were identified in the results. There was little evaluation of associations between agreement and study design, self-report modality and comparison data source, thus not allowing for any conclusions to be drawn.
An overview of the evidence available from validation studies with a description of several characteristics is provided. Studies with experimental design which evaluate factors that might affect agreement between self-report and other data sources are lacking.

The Scientific Registry of Transplant Recipients provides transplant program-specific information, but it is unclear what patients and stakeholders need to know. Acceptance criteria for the candidate waitlist and donor organs vary by program and region, but there is no means to search for programs by the clinical profiles of recipients and donors.
We examined variability in program-specific characteristics that could influence access to transplantation. We also conducted three interviews and three focus groups with heart transplant candidates and recipients. Participants evaluated prototypes of a patient-specific search tool and its capacity to identify programs tailored to specific patient needs. Patient experiences and feedback influenced the development of tools.
The distribution of recipient and donor characteristics influenced access to transplantation, as age and body mass index varied across programs (all with p<.01). Several themes emerged related to decision-making and the perceived usability of the patient-specific search.

These data can be used as a reference for the inspection of breeding farms and for legislative bodies to determine whether captive breeding for select turtle species is feasible.Data of molecular dynamics (MD) simulations were obtained for mucosal-associated invariant T (MAIT) cell ligands complexed with MR1 or MR1/TCR. Ligands included in the simulations were natural ligands 5-(2-oxoethylideneamino)-6-D-ribitylaminouracil (5-OE-RU), 5-(2-oxopropylideneamino)-6-(D-ribitylamino)uracil (5-OP-RU), their C5' ethinylated analogs in S or R configuration, as well as the corresponding fluorophore-reacted products. All-atom models of the binary and ternary complexes were constructed using PDB entry 4NQE and docked poses [1]. Missing loops, N- and C-termini were completed by homology modelling, the loop conformations optimized, and the models energy minimized prior to setup for MD simulations. A standard pre-equilibration protocol was applied before the production phase of 120 ns simulation as NPT ensemble at 300 K and 1 atm applying an explicit solvent model with OPLS3 force field parameters. Atomic coordinates and energies were recorded every 60 ps and 12 ps, respectively. The corresponding raw data files of the MD simulations are part of this dataset. All simulations were analysed with respect to root mean square deviations (rmsd) and root mean square fluctuations (rmsf) of the coordinates of protein and ligand atoms, stability of protein secondary structure, protein-ligand contacts, ligand torsion profiles, and ligand properties. More detailed statistics of non-covalent interaction counts were also collected. Radial distribution functions (rdf) were calculated when relevant. Visualization of the trajectories permits appreciation of the molecular dynamics of both, ligands and proteins and their interactions, thereby supporting drug design of MAIT cell ligands; furthermore, additional analysis of e.g. conformational changes or interactions not reported in the primary publication [1] can be performed on the data. The raw data may also be used as starting point for extension of the simulations or more sophisticated MD techniques.MCTO is a rare disorder, caused by mutations in the MafB gene, a negative regulator of receptor activator of nuclear factor-кB ligand (RANKL). Manifestations include carpal and tarsal osteolysis and renal failure. Pathophysiology is poorly understood, and no effective treatment is available. In this case report we describe a patient with MCTO (MafB, mutation c.206C>T, p.Ser69Leu), diagnosed at the age of 5 years. At 7 years, skeletal survey showed diffuse osteopenia. BMD was mildly reduced, and bone turnover markers increased. He was treated with denosumab, a human monoclonal RANKL inhibitor for two years. Each injection was followed by a marked reduction in C-telopeptide (CTX). Following denosumab his BMD and bone symptoms improved and the osteolysis stabilized. He was found to have brown tumor located in the skull, as well. Different imaging technologies were employed for the diagnosis and follow-up after parathyroidectomy. We enclose a review of the literature on the employment of such imaging technologies in the differential diagnosis of osteolytic lesions. A multidisciplinary approach comprising clinical, laboratory and imaging findings is essential for the differential diagnosis of brown tumor in PHPT.Objective. Our objective was to examine the impact of the U.S. FDA's 2013 black box warning against codeine on codeine and other opioid prescription filling after pediatric tonsillectomy and/or adenoidectomy (T/A) overall and by child race and provider urbanity/rurality. Methods. Patients ≤ 18 who underwent T/A in 8/2011 to 8/2016 were identified in Ohio Medicaid claims. Interrupted time series analyses were used to evaluate the impact of the FDA warning on codeine or other opioid prescription filling post-T/A. Results. In August 2011, codeine prescription filling was lower among black than white children (P less then .001) and among children treated at institutions in metropolitan counties than less populous counties (P less then .001). The FDA warning was associated with a 24.0% drop in codeine prescription filling (P less then .001) and 5.5% increase in alternative opioid prescription filling (P = .046). At conclusion, there remained geographic but no longer racial disparities in codeine prescribing. Conclusion. Codeine prescribing after pediatric T/A decreased after the FDA's black box warning. However, geographic disparities in codeine prescribing remain.Children undergoing solid organ and hematopoietic stem cell transplantation are at high risk of morbidity and mortality from tuberculosis (TB) disease in the post-transplant period. Treatment of TB infection and disease in the post-transplant setting is complicated by immunosuppression and drug interactions. There are limited data that address the unique challenges for the management of TB in the pediatric transplant population. This review presents the current understanding of the epidemiology, clinical presentation, diagnosis, management, and prevention for pediatric transplant recipients with TB infection and disease. Further studies are needed to improve diagnosis of TB and optimize treatment outcomes for these patients.

Face masks are essential during the COVID-19 pandemic, and the United Nations Children's Fund and the World Health Organization, recommend that they are used for children aged six years and older. However, parents are increasingly expressing concerns about whether these might be physically harmful. This mini review assessed the evidence.
We conducted a narrative review on the effects of mask wearing on physiological variables in children, using PubMed, the Cochrane Library and the World Health Organization COVID-19 Database up to 7 November 2020. The lack of paediatric studies prompted a second search for adult studies.
We only found two paediatric studies, published in 2019 and 2020. The 2020 study was not related to COVID-19. Only one study, performed with N95 respirators, collected medical parameters, and this did not suggest any harmful effects of gas exchange. The eight adult studies, including four prompted by the pandemic and one on surgeons, reported that face masks commonly used during the pandemic did not impair gas exchange during rest or mild exercise.
International guidelines recommend face masks for children aged six years and older, but further studies are needed to provide evidence-based recommendations for different age groups.

The general medical impacts of coronavirus (COVID-19) are increasingly appreciated. However, its impact on neurocognitive, psychiatric health and quality of life (QoL) in survivors after the acute phase is poorly understood. We aimed to evaluate neurocognitive function, psychiatric symptoms and QoL in COVID-19 survivors shortly after hospital discharge.
This was a cross-sectional analysis of a prospective study of hospitalized COVID-19 survivors followed up for 2months after discharge. A battery of standardized instruments evaluating neurocognitive function, psychiatric morbidity and QoL (mental and physical components) was administered by telephone.
Of the 229 screened patients, 179 were included in the final analysis. Amongst survivors, the prevalence of moderately impaired immediate verbal memory and learning was 38%, delayed verbal memory (11.8%), verbal fluency (34.6%) and working memory (executive function) (6.1%), respectively. Moreover, 58.7% of patients had neurocognitive impairment in at least one function. Rates of positive screening for anxiety, depression and post-traumatic stress disorder were 29.6%, 26.8% and 25.1%, respectively. In addition, 39.1% of the patients had psychiatric morbidity. Low QoL for physical and mental components was detected in 44.1% and 39.1% of patients respectively. Delirium and psychiatric morbidity were associated with neurocognitive impairment, and female gender was related with psychiatric morbidity.

Fetal growth restriction constitutes a major complication of pregnancy. The efficacy of its prenatal identification remains challenging. Recently, placental expression of neuropilin-1 (NRP1) was discovered to be downregulated in fetal growth restriction (FGR) with abnormal umbilical artery (UA) Doppler. Face masks are essential during the COVID-19 pandemic, and the United Nations Children's Fund and the World Health Organization, recommend that they are used for children aged six years and older. However, parents are increasingly expressing concerns about whether these might be physically harmful. This mini review assessed the evidence. We conducted a narrative review on the effects of mask wearing on physiological variables in children, using PubMed, the Cochrane Library and the World Health Organization COVID-19 Database up to 7 November 2020. The lack of paediatric studies prompted a second search for adult studies. We only found two paediatric studies, published in 2019 and 2020. The 2020 study was not related to COVID-19. Only one study, performed with N95 respirators, collected medical parameters, and this did not suggest any harmful effects of gas exchange. The eight adult studies, including four prompted by the pandemic and one on surgeons, reported that face masks commonly used during the pandemic did not impair gas exchange during rest or mild exercise. The general medical impacts of coronavirus (COVID-19) are increasingly appreciated. However, its impact on neurocognitive, psychiatric health and quality of life (QoL) in survivors after the acute phase is poorly understood. We aimed to evaluate neurocognitive function, psychiatric symptoms and QoL in COVID-19 survivors shortly after hospital discharge. This was a cross-sectional analysis of a prospective study of hospitalized COVID-19 survivors followed up for 2months after discharge. A battery of standardized instruments evaluating neurocognitive function, psychiatric morbidity and QoL (mental and physical components) was administered by telephone. Of the 229 screened patients, 179 were included in the final analysis. Amongst survivors, the prevalence of moderately impaired immediate verbal memory and learning was 38%, delayed verbal memory (11.8%), verbal fluency (34.6%) and working memory (executive function) (6.1%), respectively. Moreover, 58.7% of patients had neurocognitive impairment in at least one function. Rates of positive screening for anxiety, depression and post-traumatic stress disorder were 29.6%, 26.8% and 25.1%, respectively. In addition, 39.1% of the patients had psychiatric morbidity. Low QoL for physical and mental components was detected in 44.1% and 39.1% of patients respectively. Delirium and psychiatric morbidity were associated with neurocognitive impairment, and female gender was related with psychiatric morbidity. Thirty-three observational studies were deemed eligible and provided data for 2643 T2E detected following EVAR. A total of 1432 (54.2%) T2E were diagnosed before 30 days follow-up, while 1035 (39.1%) T2E were diagnosed beyond 30 days following EVAR. We directly access the axillary artery with multiple sheaths followed by primary closure of the axillary artery at case completion. The aim of this study is to describe our technique and to report our results with this approach.
This study is a single-institution, retrospective review of 53 patients who were treated with parallel grafts for endovascular repair of PAA and TAAA from 2006 to 2018. The aortic repairs requiring LAE included 9 cases of endo-leaks from prior endovascular repair, 20 TAAAs, and 24 PAAs. The axillary artery was exposed with a vertical axillary skin incision followed by retraction of the lateral border of the pectoralis major to expose the axillary artery distal to the pectoralis minor. A 5-French (F) through 12F sheaths were used to directly access the axillary artery for delivery of endovascula conduit. There were no neurologic events or upper extremity ischemia in our series.
Primary aorto-duodenal fistula (PADF) is a rare but life-threatening condition that should be taken into account when considering upper gastrointestinal bleeding in elderly patients with history of abdominal aortic aneurysm. Unfortunately, its diagnosis is often unsuspected until surgery or at postmortem.
We report a case of a 69 years old man with massive gastrointestinal bleeding secondary to a primary aortic duodenal fistula without a history of abdominal aortic aneurysm and with a misleading diagnosis of chronic ischemic enteritis. Repeated endoscopies and a prior CT angiography failed to document a proper diagnosis. Finally, the aorto-duodenal fistula was identified with a further abdominal CT angiography. Despite a prompt endovascular treatment with aortic endoprosthesis placement, the patient died due to a severe hemorrhagic shock consequent to the massive blood loss.

It is frequently associated to aortic atherosclerosis. Its prompt diagnosis with endoscopy and CT angiography is very often difficult and almost never immediate. In case of massive upper GI bleeding without a certain diagnosis in patients with severe aortic atherosclerosis, laparotomy with careful inspection of the distal duodenum is strongly recommended for aortic repair and bowel suture.

Isolated internal iliac artery aneurysms (IIAAs) are uncommon but potentially morbid lesions that are a challenge to monitor and treat. However, given the small numbers of reported cases and high rates of incidentally discovered lesions, the natural history of isolated IIAAs is not well characterized. This case describes an atypical and previously unreported spontaneous thrombosis of an isolated IIAA, a lesion typically thought to progressively enlarge and rupture.
Medical records and imaging studies were retrospectively reviewed with the approval of our Institutional Review Board. A single patient underwent fluoroscopic angiography followed by computed tomography (CT) angiography, with no subsequent operative intervention.

The effect of electricity, induced by external resistance, on microbial community performance is investigated in Microbial Fuel Cells (****) involved in simultaneous biotransformation of sulfide and nitrate. In the experiment, three **** were operated under different external resistances (100 Ω, 1000 Ω and 10,000 Ω), while one ****was operated with open circuit as control. All **** demonstrate good capacity for simultaneous sulfide and nitrate biotransformation regardless of external resistance. **** present similar voltage profile; however, the output voltage has positive relationship with external resistance, and the **** with lowest external resistance (100 Ω) generated highest power density. High-throughput sequencing confirms that taxonomic distribution of suspended sludge in anode chamber encompass phylum level to genus level, while the results of principal component analysis (PCA) suggest that microbial communities are varied with external resistance, which external resistance caused the change of electricity generation and substrate removal at the same, and then leads to the change of microbial communities. However, based on Pearson correlation analyses, no strong correlation is evident between community diversity indices (ACE index, Chao index, Shannon index and Simpson index) and the electricity (final voltage and current density). Similarly, dichotomous analysis confirmed a lower amygdalar activity in men ≥ 50 years as compared to those < 50 years of age (0.79 ± 0.1 vs. 0.84 ± 0.1, P = 0.007), which was not observed in women (0.81 ± 0.1 vs. 0.82 ± 0.1, P = 0.549). Accordingly, a fully adjusted linear regression analysis identified age as an independent predictor of amygdalar activity only in men (B-coefficient - 0.278, P = 0.001).

A systematic literature search of studies published until November 2020 regarding the application of 123I-mIBG SPECT in HF patients was performed, in Pubmed, Scopus, Medline, Central (Cochrane Library) and Web Of Science databases, including the words "MIBG", "metaiodobenzylguanidine", "heart", "spect", and "tomographic". The included studies had to correlate 123I-mIBG SPECT scores with endpoints such as overall survival and prevention of AE and SCD in HF patients. According to the sixteen studies included, the analysis showed that 123I-mIBG SPECT scores, such as summed defect score (SDS), regional wash-out (rWO), and regional myocardial tracer uptake, could have a reliable prognostic value in patients with HF. An increased SDS or rWO, as well as a reduced 123I-mIBG myocardial uptake, have proven to be effective in predicting AE- and SCD-specific risk in HF patients. Despite achieved results being promising, a more reproducible standardized method for semi-quantitative analysis and further studies with larger cohort are needed for 123I-mIBG SPECT myocardial imaging to be as reliable and, thus, accepted as the conventional 123I-mIBG planar myocardial imaging.

The effect of electricity, induced by external resistance, on microbial community performance is investigated in Microbial Fuel Cells (MFCs) involved in simultaneous biotransformation of sulfide and nitrate. In the experiment, three MFCs were operated under different external resistances (100 Ω, 1000 Ω and 10,000 Ω), while one MFC was operated with open circuit as control. All MFCs demonstrate good capacity for simultaneous sulfide and nitrate biotransformation regardless of external resistance. MFCs present similar voltage profile; however, the output voltage has positive relationship with external resistance, and the MFC1 with lowest external resistance (100 Ω) generated highest power density. High-throughput sequencing confirms that taxonomic distribution of suspended sludge in anode chamber encompass phylum level to genus level, while the results of principal component analysis (PCA) suggest that microbial communities are varied with external resistance, which external resistance caused the change of electricity generation and substrate removal at the same, and then leads to the change of microbial communities. However, based on Pearson correlation analyses, no strong correlation is evident between community diversity indices (ACE index, Chao index, Shannon index and Simpson index) and the electricity (final voltage and current density). It is inferred that the performance of electricity did not significantly affect the diversity of microbial communities in MFCs biotransforming sulfide and nitrate simultaneously. Amygdalar metabolic activity was shown to independently predict cardiovascular outcomes. However, little is known about age- and sex-dependent variability in neuronal stress responses among individuals free of cardiac disease. This study sought to assess age- and sex-specific differences of resting amygdalar metabolic activity in the absence of clinical cardiovascular disease. Amygdalar metabolic activity was assessed in 563 patients who underwent multimodality imaging by F-fluorodeoxyglucose ( F-FDG) positron emission tomography/computed tomography and echocardiography for the evaluation of cardiac function. After exclusion of 294 patients with structural or functional cardiovascular pathologies, 269 patients (128 women) remained in the final population. F-FDG amygdalar activity significantly decreased with age in men (r = - 0.278, P = 0.001), but not in women (r = 0.002, P = 0.983). Similarly, dichotomous analysis confirmed a lower amygdalar activity in men ≥ 50 years as compared to those < 50 years of age (0.79 ± 0.1 vs. 0.84 ± 0.1, P = 0.007), which was not observed in women (0.81 ± 0.1 vs. 0.82 ± 0.1, P = 0.549). Accordingly, a fully adjusted linear regression analysis identified age as an independent predictor of amygdalar activity only in men (B-coefficient - 0.278, P = 0.001). A systematic literature search of studies published until November 2020 regarding the application of 123I-mIBG SPECT in HF patients was performed, in Pubmed, Scopus, Medline, Central (Cochrane Library) and Web Of Science databases, including the words "MIBG", "metaiodobenzylguanidine", "heart", "spect", and "tomographic". The included studies had to correlate 123I-mIBG SPECT scores with endpoints such as overall survival and prevention of AE and SCD in HF patients. According to the sixteen studies included, the analysis showed that 123I-mIBG SPECT scores, such as summed defect score (SDS), regional wash-out (rWO), and regional myocardial tracer uptake, could have a reliable prognostic value in patients with HF. An increased SDS or rWO, as well as a reduced 123I-mIBG myocardial uptake, have proven to be effective in predicting AE- and SCD-specific risk in HF patients. Despite achieved results being promising, a more reproducible standardized method for semi-quantitative analysis and further studies with larger cohort are needed for 123I-mIBG SPECT myocardial imaging to be as reliable and, thus, accepted as the conventional 123I-mIBG planar myocardial imaging. Rates of perinatal maternal antibiotic use have increased in recent years linked to prophylactic antibiotic use following Caesarean section delivery. This antibiotic use is necessary and beneficial in the short-term; however, long-term consequences on brain and behaviour have not been studied in detail. Here, we endeavoured to determine whether maternal administration of antibiotics during a critical window of development in early life has lasting effects on brain and behaviour in offspring ****. To this end we studied two different antibiotic preparations (single administration of Phenoxymethylpenicillin at 31 mg/kg/day; and a cocktail consisting of, ampicillin 1 mg/mL; vancomycin 0.5 mg/mL; metronidazole 1 mg/mL; ciprofloxacin 0.2 mg/mL and imipenem 0.25 mg/mL). It was observed that early life exposure to maternal antibiotics led to persistent alterations in anxiety, sociability and cognitive behaviours. These effects in general were greater in animals treated with the broad-spectrum antibiotic cocktail compared to a single antibiotic with the exception of deficits in social recognition which were more robustly observed in Penicillin V exposed animals. Given the prevalence of maternal antibiotic use, our findings have potentially significant translational relevance, particularly considering the implications on infant health during this critical period and into later life.Antidepressant drugs are first-line treatment for panic disorder. The results showed that previous injection of the 5-HT1A receptor antagonist WAY-100635 in the dPAG blocked the panicolytic-like effect caused by chronic systemic administration of the tricyclic AD imipramine in male Wistar rats tested in the elevated T-maze. Neither chronic treatment with imipramine nor fluoxetine changed the expression of 5-HT1A receptors in the dPAG. Treatment with these ADs also failed to significantly change ERK1/2 (extracellular-signal regulated kinase) phosphorylation level in this midbrain area. Blockade of 5-HT2C receptors in the dPAG with the 5-HT2C receptor antagonist SB-242084 did not change the anxiogenic effect caused by a single acute injection of fluoxetine or imipramine in the Vogel conflict test. These results reinforce the view that the facilitation of 5-HT1A receptor-mediated neurotransmission in the dPAG is a common mechanism involved in the panicolytic effect caused by chronic administration of ADs. These variables were further correlated with average EEG power in each frequency band to establish within-group interactions between cortical motor functions and kinematic motor output. High ß-band power correlated with mean kinematic peak latency and signal complexity in the healthy group, while no correlation was found in the PD group. Also, the healthy group demonstrated stronger ERD in the broad ß-band than the PD participants. Our results suggest that cortical ß-band power in healthy populations is graded to finger tapping latency and complexity of movement, but this relationship is impaired in PD. These insights could help further enhance our understanding of the role of cortical ß-band oscillations in healthy movement and the possible disruption of that relationship in PD. These outcomes can provide further directions for treatment and therapeutic applications and potentially establish cortical biomarkers of Parkinson's disease.Serotonin (5-HT) neurotransmission has been associated with reward-related behaviour. Moreover, the serotonergic system modulates the basolateral amygdala (BLA), a structure involved in reward encoding, and reward prediction error. However, the role played by 5-HT on BLA during a reward-driven task has not been fully elucidated. In this paper, we investigated whether serotonergic modulation of the BLA is involved in reward-driven learning. To this end, we trained Long Evans rats in an operant conditioning task, and examined the effects of fluoxetine treatment (a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor, 10 mg/kg) in combination with BLA lesions with NMDA (20 mg/mL) on extinction learning. We also investigated whether intra-BLA injection of the serotonergic 5-HT1A receptor agonist 8-OH DPAT, or antagonist WAY-100635, alters extinction performance. We found that fluoxetine treatment strongly accelerated extinction learning, while BLA lesions partially reverted this effect and slightly impaired consolidation of extinction. Stimulation and inhibition of 5-HT1A receptors in BLA induced opposite effects to those of fluoxetine, impairing or accelerating extinction performance, respectively. Our findings suggest that 5-HT modulates reward-driven learning, and 5-HT1A receptors located in the BLA are relevant for extinction.

The relationship between the two analytical signals (carbohydrate signal/protein signal) is an indicator of the degree of glycosylation (electrochemical index of glycosylation), which has shown an excellent correlation (r = 0.990) with the official parameter %CDT obtained by CE-UV. Nanosensor design for interrogation of cell mechanics is an interdisciplinary area bridging over cell biology, mechanics, and micro/nanotechnology. In this tutorial review, we give insight into the background and technical innovation of currently available methods for mechanical analysis of cells. First, we discuss the mechanism of mechanical changes in the development and progression of cancer that shows the feasibility of mechanical sensors in cancer cell detection. Next, we summarize the principle, progress, and essential problems of common technologies for cell force measurement, including single molecule force spectroscopy and elastic substrate-sensors. Following that, we discuss novel micro and nano-scale mechanical sensors and their applications in single cell level biological analysis. At last, we elaborate on the remaining issues and trends of the cellular mechanical sensors.Visceral hypersensitivity is a major pathophysiology in irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). Although brain-gut interaction is considered to be involved in the regulation of visceral sensation, little had been known how brain controls visceral sensation. To improve therapeutic strategy in IBS, we should develop a novel approach to control visceral hypersensitivity. Here, we summarized recent data on central control of visceral sensation by neuropeptides in rats. Orexin, ghrelin or oxytocin in the brain is capable of inducing visceral antinociception. Dopamine, cannabinoid, adenosine, serotonin or opioid in the central nervous system (CNS) plays a role in the visceral hyposensitivity. Central ghrelin, levodopa or morphine could induce visceral antinociception via the orexinergic signaling. Orexin induces visceral antinociception through dopamine, cannabinoid, adenosine or oxytocin. Orexin nerve fibers are identified widely throughout the CNS and orexins are implicated in a number of functions. With regard to gastrointestinal functions, in addition to its visceral antinociception, orexin acts centrally to stimulate gastrointestinal motility and improve intestinal barrier function. Brain orexin is also involved in regulation of sleep/awake cycle and anti-depressive action. From these evidence, we would like to make a hypothesis that decreased orexin signaling in the brain may play a role in the pathophysiology in a part of patients with IBS who are frequently accompanied with sleep disturbance, depressive state and disturbed gut functions such as gut motility disturbance, leaky gut and visceral hypersensitivity.Due to restriction of the use of BPA, several structural analogues such as BPS and BPF have been proposed for its replacement in many consumer products. This has increased the prevalence of BPS and BPF in urine from tested cohorts. However, these substitutes have similar endocrine disrupting properties to BPA, particularly on reproductive and metabolic functions, which suggests that fetal exposure to these analogues could be of concern for human health. Bisphenols (BPs) are mainly metabolized to glucuronides (BP-Gs), which are considered as inactive but provide a relevant marker of fetal exposure during pregnancy. In most instances, these metabolites are indirectly quantified after hydrolysis and measurement of the corresponding native BPs, which may lead to bias due to spurious BPs contamination during blood collection and/or analyses. Next, we summarize the principle, progress, and essential problems of common technologies for cell force measurement, including single molecule force spectroscopy and elastic substrate-sensors. Following that, we discuss novel micro and nano-scale mechanical sensors and their applications in single cell level biological analysis. At last, we elaborate on the remaining issues and trends of the cellular mechanical sensors.Visceral hypersensitivity is a major pathophysiology in irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). Although brain-gut interaction is considered to be involved in the regulation of visceral sensation, little had been known how brain controls visceral sensation. To improve therapeutic strategy in IBS, we should develop a novel approach to control visceral hypersensitivity. Here, we summarized recent data on central control of visceral sensation by neuropeptides in rats. Orexin, ghrelin or oxytocin in the brain is capable of inducing visceral antinociception. Dopamine, cannabinoid, adenosine, serotonin or opioid in the central nervous system (CNS) plays a role in the visceral hyposensitivity. Central ghrelin, levodopa or morphine could induce visceral antinociception via the orexinergic signaling. Orexin induces visceral antinociception through dopamine, cannabinoid, adenosine or oxytocin. Orexin nerve fibers are identified widely throughout the CNS and orexins are implicated in a number of functions. With regard to gastrointestinal functions, in addition to its visceral antinociception, orexin acts centrally to stimulate gastrointestinal motility and improve intestinal barrier function. Brain orexin is also involved in regulation of sleep/awake cycle and anti-depressive action. From these evidence, we would like to make a hypothesis that decreased orexin signaling in the brain may play a role in the pathophysiology in a part of patients with IBS who are frequently accompanied with sleep disturbance, depressive state and disturbed gut functions such as gut motility disturbance, leaky gut and visceral hypersensitivity.Due to restriction of the use of BPA, several structural analogues such as BPS and BPF have been proposed for its replacement in many consumer products. This has increased the prevalence of BPS and BPF in urine from tested cohorts. However, these substitutes have similar endocrine disrupting properties to BPA, particularly on reproductive and metabolic functions, which suggests that fetal exposure to these analogues could be of concern for human health. Root antioxidant defense, restricted root-to-shoot Cu translocation, altered nutrient partition, and leaf gas exchange adjustments occurred as tolerance mechanisms of soybean plants to increasing soil Cu levels. The intensive application of copper (Cu) fungicides has been related to the accumulation of this metal in agricultural soils. This study aimed to evaluate the effects of increasing soil Cu levels on soybean (Glycine max) plants. The envelope protein E of the SARS-CoV coronavirus is an archetype of viroporin. It is a small hydrophobic protein displaying ion channel activity that has proven highly relevant in virus-host interaction and virulence. Ion transport through E channel was shown to alter Ca2+ homeostasis in the cell and trigger inflammation processes. Here, we study transport properties of the E viroporin in mixed solutions of potassium and calcium chloride that contain a fixed total concentration (mole fraction experiments). The channel is reconstituted in planar membranes of different lipid compositions, including a lipid mixture that mimics the endoplasmic reticulum-Golgi intermediate compartment (ERGIC) membrane where the virus localizes within the cell. We find that the E ion conductance changes non-monotonically with the total ionic concentration displaying an Anomalous Mole Fraction Effect (AMFE) only when charged lipids are present in the membrane. We also observe that E channel insertion in ERGIC-mimic membranes - including lipid with intrinsic negative curvature - enhances ion permeation at physiological concentrations of pure CaCl2 or KCl solutions, with a preferential transport of Ca2+ in mixed KCl-CaCl2 solutions. However, these methods also have counteracting detrimental effects on gamete viability due to increased mutagenesis2 and ectopic recombination3. Lung cancer is one of the leading causes of death worldwide. Cell death pathways such as autophagy, apoptosis, and necrosis can provide useful clinical and immunological insights that can assist in the design of personalized therapeutics. In this study, variations in the expression of genes involved in cell death pathways and resulting infiltration of immune cells were explored in lung adenocarcinoma (The Cancer Genome Atlas TCGA, lung adenocarcinoma (LUAD), 510 patients). Firstly, genes involved in autophagy (n = 34 genes), apoptosis (n = 66 genes), and necrosis (n = 32 genes) were analyzed to assess the prognostic significance in lung cancer. The significant genes were used to develop the cell death index (CDI) of 21 genes which clustered patients based on high risk (high CDI) and low risk (low CDI). The survival analysis using the Kaplan-Meier curve differentiated patients based on overall survival (40.4 months vs. 76.2 months), progression-free survival (26.2 months vs. 48.6 months), and disease-free survival (62.2 months vs. 158.2 months) (Log-rank test, p 1.5-fold, p less then 0.01) with the high-risk group. Clays were assayed for antibacterial efficacy using minimum inhibitory concentration assays. All clays possessed a mineral content with antibacterial potential; however, clay leachates contained insufficient ions to have any antibacterial effects. All clay leachates displayed toxicity towards THP-1 monocytes, while clay suspensions showed less toxicity, suggesting immunogenicity. Reduced clay cytotoxicity on HaCaTs was shown, as many leachates stimulated wound-healing responses. Lung cancer is one of the leading causes of death worldwide. Cell death pathways such as autophagy, apoptosis, and necrosis can provide useful clinical and immunological insights that can assist in the design of personalized therapeutics. In this study, variations in the expression of genes involved in cell death pathways and resulting infiltration of immune cells were explored in lung adenocarcinoma (The Cancer Genome Atlas TCGA, lung adenocarcinoma (LUAD), 510 patients). Firstly, genes involved in autophagy (n = 34 genes), apoptosis (n = 66 genes), and necrosis (n = 32 genes) were analyzed to assess the prognostic significance in lung cancer. The significant genes were used to develop the cell death index (CDI) of 21 genes which clustered patients based on high risk (high CDI) and low risk (low CDI). The survival analysis using the Kaplan-Meier curve differentiated patients based on overall survival (40.4 months vs. 76.2 months), progression-free survival (26.2 months vs. 48.6 months), and disease-free survival (62.2 months vs. 158.2 months) (Log-rank test, p 1.5-fold, p less then 0.01) with the high-risk group.
