  • N-acylated homoserine lactones (AHLs), a class of auto-inducers produced by Gram-negative bacteria, are typical signaling molecules in quorum sensing (QS) systems. Importantly, AHLs play a key role in determining the virulence of foodborne pathogens and reflect the activity of spoilage bacteria. In this study, an eco-friendly fluorescence-sensing platform for the rapid and sensitive detection of AHLs was developed and characterized. Molecularly imprinted polymers embedded with yellow-emitting carbon quantum dots (CQDs) were obtained via the sol-gel process using furanone as an alternative template molecule, and long-wave-emitting CQDs with excellent optical properties were used as signal conversion materials. After template elution, the blotting cavities on the surface of the CQD@MIPs (molecularly imprinted polymers) were able to selectively recognize AHLs, demonstrating a stronger fluorescence response compared with the corresponding CQD@NIPs (non-imprinted polymers). Under optimal test conditions, a good linear relationship between the concentration of analyte and the relative fluorescence intensity of the CQD@MIPs was observed. The linear detection range was 0-2.0 μM, and the limit of detection (LOD) was 0.067 μM. Importantly, the proposed sensing platform functioned as an optical detection strategy that responded quickly (2 min) to AHLs. Additionally, this sensing platform was applied to the analysis of AHLs in bacterial supernatant samples with satisfactory results. More interestingly, the 3D-printing CQD@MIPs were tentative explored in this work, which was personalized and portable, has an advantage of point of care testing (POCT) detection in the future. Therefore, the fabricated sensor shows a high sensitivity of 3.74 μA μM-1 cm-2 and excellent selectivity for BPA detection. Meanwhile, the electrode could be renewed by the UV irradiation and thus exhibits good recyclability and long-term stability. Under optimum conditions, the as-prepared electrode exhibited good photocurrent response for the detection of BPA, and allowed detection of BPA at a concentration as low as 0.03 μM. The favorable performance for BPA detection in real samples is able to extend more application of photoelectrochemical sensors for sensitive and long-term monitoring of environmental pollutants.Over the last decade, advances related to high-resolution mass spectrometry (HRMS) have led to improved capabilities for non-targeted chemical analyses. Important applications for these capabilities include identifying unknown xenobiotics and discovering emerging contaminants in human samples as exposure biomarkers. Despite technological advances, identifying unknown compounds by non-targeted analyses remains challenging due in part to the lack of MS spectral libraries and inherent sample complexity resulting in the generation of large amounts of MS data. While high resolution can separate nominally isobaric compounds in a mass spectrum, isomers cannot be distinguished. **** work also remains to develop models to predict both mass spectra and retention times for the unexplored regions of chemical space. In this review, we focus on recent advances and applications of non-targeted analyses using liquid chromatography - high-resolution mass spectrometry (LC-HRMS) in human biomonitoring, including sample preparation, molecular formula assignments, and prediction models for retention times and mass fragmentations, to enable and improve identifications of unknown chemicals. The purpose of this review is to improve our understanding of the applicability and limitations in both the analytical methods and data analysis aspects of non-targeted analysis in human exposure studies. We also discuss the challenges and prospects in this field for future research on sample preparation, identification confidence and accuracy, data processing tools, MS spectra comparability, liquid chromatographic retention time (RT) prediction algorithms, and quantitative capabilities.This study evaluates the use of Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy with attenuated total reflectance (ATR/FTIR) in tandem with data driven soft independent modeling of class analogy (DD-SIMCA) to check authenticity and monitor virgin coconut oil adulteration. By using infrared spectra of pure samples and samples adulterated with canola, corn, sunflower and soybean, one class models were developed to evaluate the authenticity and adulteration of virgin coconut oil. The proposed methodology was able to confirm the authenticity and to detect the adulteration with all tested oils in a concentration range of 10-40%. Also, it was possible to identify the four adulterants oils studied with 88-100% of sensitivity and 96-100% of specificity. The results indicated that ATR/FTIR spectroscopy in conjunction with a one-class strategy based on DD-SIMCA is a clean and fast methodology that can be easily implemented for virgin coconut oil purity control.

  • The electrochemical energy storage of lithium and sodium ions from aqueous solutions in binary metal oxides is of great interest for renewable energy storage applications. Binary metal oxides are of interest for aqueous energy storage due to their better structural stability and electronic conductivity and tunability of redox potentials. They have also been widely studied as novel electrodes for supercapacitors. The interactions between water and lithium/sodium ions, and water and binary metal oxide surface determine the electrochemical reactions and their long-term stability. Our results indicate that the aqueous sodium electrolyte has a stronger influence on the capacitance and cycling stability of the binary (Ca and Mo) metal oxide electrode than its lithium cousin. The symmetric cell in a two-electrode configuration was assembled with the proposed binary metal oxide, which shows an average discharge voltage of 1.2 V, delivering a specific capacitance of 72 F g-1 at a specific energy density of 32 W h kg-1 based on the total mass of the active materials. The development of highly concentrated aqueous electrolytes such as the "water-in-salt" electrolyte showed a larger electrochemical (voltage) window with enhanced storage capacitance for increasing the salt concentrations has also been discussed.A simple synthetic strategy for the preparation of high nitrogen content azo- and methylene bridged mixed energetic azoles was used. All new compounds were fully characterized by NMR and infrared spectroscopy, elemental analysis, and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). In addition, the structures of energetic salts 7 and 10 were confirmed by single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis. Detonation performances, calculated from heats of formation and experimental densities, thermal stabilities, and impact and friction sensitivities suggest possible applications in the field of insensitive energetic materials.Several propargyl functionalised substrates with different heteroatoms (N, O or S) have been used for the preparation of propargyl gold(i) phosphine complexes. The complexes were prepared in high yields either by reaction of the substrate with [Au(acac)PPh3] or by reaction of [AuCl(PPh3)] with potassium hydroxide and the substrate in methanol. Several of the complexes have been characterised by X-ray diffraction showing the presence of secondary bonds such as π-stacking and aurophilic interactions. The reaction of the propargyl gold(i) phosphine complexes with [Cu(NO3)(PPh3)2] or [Ag(OTf)(PPh3)2] afforded heterobimetallic complexes with π-coordination of Cu(PPh3)2 or Ag(PPh3)2 to the alkyne bond. When the substituent of the propargyl unit contained more strongly coordinating pyridine moieties, [(PyCH2)2NCH2C[triple bond, length as m-dash]CAuPPh3], coordination of the heterometal to the pyridine units occurred, displacing the phosphine groups and giving rise to a dimeric structure. The antiproliferative activity of the complexes against cisplatin resistant lung cancer cell line A549 was determined by MTT assay. The mononuclear gold complexes showed excellent activities with IC50 values less then 14 μM. Coordination of copper of silver to the alkynyl fragment resulted in a significant increase in activity suggesting a synergistic effect between the two metal centres.This review article explores the synthesis of the organosulfur(vi) species named sulfonimidates, focusing on their synthesis from sulfur(ii), sulfur(iv) and sulfur(vi) reagents, and investigates their recent resurgeance in interest as intermediates to access other important organosulfur compounds. Sulfonimidates have been utilized as precursors for polymers, sulfoximine and sulfonimidamide drug candidates and as alkyl transfer reagents.Garnet solid state electrolytes have been considered as potential candidates to enable next generation all solid state batteries (ASSBs). To facilitate the practical application of ASSBs, a high room temperature ionic conductivity and a low interfacial resistance between solid state electrolyte and electrodes are essential. In this work, we report a study of cerium doped Li5La3Nb2O12 through X-ray pair distribution function analysis, impedance spectroscopy and electrochemical testing. The successful cerium incorporation was confirmed by both X-ray diffraction refinement and X-ray pair distribution function analysis, showing the formation of an extensive solid solution. The local bond distances for Ce and Nb on the octahedral site were determined using X-ray pair distribution function analysis, illustrating the longer bond distances around Ce. This Ce doping strategy was shown to give a significant enhancement in conductivity (1.4 × 10-4 S cm-1 for Li5.75La3Nb1.25Ce0.75O12, which represents one of the highest conductivities for a garnet with less than 6 Li) as well as a dramatically decreased interfacial resistance (488 Ω cm2 for Li5.75La3Nb1.25Ce0.75O12). In order to demonstrate the potential of this doped system for use in ASSBs, the long term cycling of a Li//garnet//Li symmetric cell over 380 h has been demonstrated.Formation of a Cu(i)-alkylamine complex is found to be the key step for Cu(ii) ions to reduce to Cu(0) in the presence of glucose. Also, alkylamines in Cu nanowire synthesis serve triple roles as a reducing, complexation and capping agent. Alkylamines reduce Cu(ii) to Cu(i) at above 100 °C and protect the Cu(i) by forming a Cu ion-alkylamine coordination complex with a 1  2 ratio in an aqueous solution. With respect to the 1  2 complex ratio, the additional free alkylamines ensure a stable Cu(i)-alkylamine complex. After completion of Cu(i)-Cu(0) reduction by glucose, alkylamines remain on Cu(0) seeds to regulate the anisotropic growth of Cu nanocrystals. Long-chain (≥C16) alkylamines are found to help produce high-quality Cu nanowires, while short-chain (≤C12) alkylamines only produce CuO products.   • Metabolites known to activate plant secondary defense metabolism were significantly increased in the tolerant cultivars compared to susceptible cultivars following Sss inoculation. The review methodology followed the recommendations of the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analysis (PRISMA) guidelines. Seven databases were searched for peer-reviewed literature. The terms searched thematically covered (1) ART adherence, (2) household and family and (3) support and care. Thirty-three studies conducted in 15 LMICs were selected and a mixed methods synthesis was undertaken. Social and structural determinants affected the type, quality and amount of support for PLWH of all ages, which affected PLWH's ART adherence. Gender norms affected the type of support that household members give to PLWH. Education moderated household support for ART adherence through literacy and language skills. Cultural context, religious beliefs, and social norms reinforced or undermined household support for ART adherence. Stigma affected disclosure, generated secrecy around giving medication and impeded access to support from the community. Supporting PLWH exacerbated economic hardship for household members. Health system dysfunction negatively impacted trust and communication between household members and health professionals. Viral vector-based CAR T-cells initially drove these successful efforts; however, high costs and cumbersome manufacturing processes have limited the widespread clinical implementation of CAR T-cell therapy. Here we will discuss the state of the art of the transposon-based gene transfer and its application in CAR T immunotherapy, specifically focusing on the Sleeping Beauty (SB) transposon system, as a valid cost-effective and safe option as compared to the viral vector-based systems. A general overview of SB transposon system applications will be provided, with an update of major developments, current clinical trials achievements and future perspectives exploiting SB for CAR T-cell engineering. After the first clinical successes achieved in the context of B-cell neoplasms, we are now facing a new era and it is paramount to advance gene transfer technology to fully exploit the potential of CAR T-cells towards next-generation immunotherapy.The recent rapid rise of multi-drug resistant Enterobacteriaceae (MDR-E) is threatening the treatment of common infectious diseases. Stool samples were collected from 104 healthy infants between the ages of 5 and 7 months. Enterobacteriaceae isolates were screened for resistance against several antimicrobial classes. Presence of ESBL and carbapenemase genes was determined using multiplex PCR. Sequence types were assigned to individual strains by multi-locus sequence typing. Phylogenetic analysis of Escherichia coli was done using the triplex PCR method. Forty-three percent of the infants were positive for ESBL-producing Enterobacteriaceae, the majority of which were E. coli. We identified several different ESBL E. coli sequence types most of which belonged to the phylogenetic group B2 (23%) or D (73%). The widespread colonization of infants in a developing country with ESBL-producing Enterobacteriaceae is concerning. The multiple sequence types and reported non-human sources support that multiple non-epidemic MDR lineages are circulating in Pakistan with healthy infants as a common reservoir.

The review methodology followed the recommendations of the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analysis (PRISMA) guidelines. Seven databases were searched for peer-reviewed literature. The terms searched thematically covered (1) ART adherence, (2) household and family and (3) support and care. Thirty-three studies conducted in 15 LMICs were selected and a mixed methods synthesis was undertaken. Social and structural determinants affected the type, quality and amount of support for PLWH of all ages, which affected PLWH's ART adherence. Gender norms affected the type of support that household members give to PLWH. Education moderated household support for ART adherence through literacy and language skills. Cultural context, religious beliefs, and social norms reinforced or undermined household support for ART adherence. Stigma affected disclosure, generated secrecy around giving medication and impeded access to support from the community. Supporting PLWH exacerbated economic hardship for household members. Health system dysfunction negatively impacted trust and communication between household members and health professionals.   • Strabismus and lack of binocular vision are factors potentially contributing to developmental coordination disorder.PURPOSE To evaluate the efficacy of intravitreal aflibercept as a second-line therapy in eyes with persistent diabetic macular oedema (DMO) despite receiving initial bevacizumab treatment. METHODS A prospective multicentre study was conducted in nine academic clinics in Israel. Starting from the first follow-up visit, a treat-and-extend regimen was applied in which the treatment intervals were extended by 2 weeks based on macular thickness using SD-OCT. The primary outcome was central subfield thickness (CST) at week 52. RESULTS Forty-four patients (n = 48 eyes) were recruited to the study, and 43 eyes completed 52 weeks of follow-up. Patients received a mean (±SD) of 7.9 ± 3.5 bevacizumab injections before enrolment. The mean (±SD) CST under aflibercept therapy decreased from 468 ± 131 μm at baseline to 303 ± 67 μm at 52 weeks (p = 0.002), and best corrected visual acuity improved from 64 ± 15 ETDRS letters at baseline to 75 ± 8 letters at week 52 (p = 0.001). Twenty (46%) eyes met the treat-and-extend criteria and received a mean (±SD) of 10.9 ± 2 aflibercept injections. CONCLUSIONS Eyes with persistent DMO following initial bevacizumab therapy had a marked reduction in macular thickness and improved visual acuity following 1 year of treatment with intravitreal aflibercept. Less than half of the patients met eligibility criteria for extension of the treatment interval; for these patients, the treat-and-extend regimen resulted in a maximum treatment interval of 10 weeks during the first year.BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES Patients with ophthalmic emergencies often present to emergency rooms. SUBJECTS/METHODS 329 EM physicians participated in this cross-sectional multicentre survey. Questions inquired about the amount, type, and self-perceived adequacy of ophthalmic training. Likert scales were used to assess confidence and comfort working up, diagnosing, and managing ophthalmic emergencies. RESULTS Participants recall receiving a median of 5 and 10 h of ophthalmic training in medical school and residency, respectively. Few feel this prepared them for residency (16.5%) or practice (52.0%). Only 50.6% feel confident with their ophthalmic exam. Most (75.0%) feel confident in their ability to identify an ophthalmic emergency, but 58.8% feel well prepared to work them up. Responders feel more comfortable diagnosing acute retrobulbar hematoma (72.5%), retinal detachment (69.8%), and acute angle closure glaucoma (78.0%) than central retinal artery occlusion (28.9%) or giant cell arteritis (53.2%). Only 60.2% feel comfortable determining if canthotomy and cantholysis is necessary in the setting of acute retrobulbar hematoma, and 40.3% feel comfortable performing the procedure. There was a trend towards attending physicians and providers in urban and academic settings feeling more comfortable diagnosing and managing ophthalmic emergencies compared to trainees, non-urban, and non-academic physicians. We now used a molecular approach to directly address the role of SMOX, and demonstrate that Smox-deficient **** exhibit significant reductions of gastric spermidine levels and H. pylori-induced inflammation. Proteomic analysis revealed that cancer was the most significantly altered functional pathway in Smox-/- gastric organoids. Moreover, there was also less DNA damage and β-catenin activation in H. pylori-infected Smox-/- **** or gastric organoids, compared to infected wild-type animals or gastroids. The link between SMOX and β-catenin activation was confirmed in human gastric organoids that were treated with a novel SMOX inhibitor. EGFR and ΔNp63 enabled and/or potentiated the activation of a subset of TGFβ-inducible invasion/migration-associated genes, e.g., ITGA2, LAMB3, and WNT7A/B, and enhanced the recruitment of SMAD2/3 to these genes. The TGFβ- and EGF-induced binding of SMAD2/3 and JUNB to these gene loci was accompanied by p63-SMAD2/3 and p63-JUNB complex formation. p63 and EGFR were also found to strongly potentiate TGFβ induction of AP-1 proteins and, in particular, FOS family members. Ectopic overexpression of FOS could counteract the decrease in TGFβ-induced gene activation after p63 depletion. p63 is also involved in the transcriptional regulation of heparin binding (HB)-EGF and EGFR genes, thereby establishing a self-amplification loop that facilitates and empowers the pro-invasive functions of TGFβ.

Based on morphological characters using dichotomous morphological keys, high-resolution light microscopy, and scanning electron microscopy imaging, the tick was identified as Am. americanum nymph exhibiting various morphological anomalies including ectromely associate with asymmetry, olygomely (lack) of the fourth left leg, and schizomely (bifurcation of palpus) on the right side. We believe this is the first report of the presence of several spontaneous anomalies in one Am. americanum specimen. Morphological identity of the specimen was corroborated by DNA sequencing of the mitochondrial 16S region. We discuss recent reports of morphological anomalies in ixodid ticks and emphasize the significance of additional studies of teratology in medically important tick species and its potential implications.When we engage in internally directed cognition (e.g., planning or imagination), our eye behavior decouples from external stimuli and couples to internal representations (e.g., internal visualizations of ideas). Here, we investigated whether eye behavior predicts the susceptibility to visual distraction during internally directed cognition. To this end, participants performed a divergent thinking task, which required internally directed attention, and we measured distraction in terms of attention capture by unrelated images. We used multilevel mixed models to predict visual distraction by eye behavior right before distractor onset. In Study 1 (N = 38), visual distraction was predicted by increased saccade and blink rate, and higher pupil dilation. We replicated these findings in Study 2 using the same task, but with less predictable distractor onsets and a larger sample (N = 144). We also explored whether individual differences in susceptibility to visual distraction were related to cognitive ability and task performance. Taken together, variation in eye behavior was found to be a consistent predictor of visual distraction during internally directed cognition. This highlights the relevance of eye parameters as objective indicators of internal versus external attentional focus and distractibility during complex mental tasks.Objective To measure sodium relaxation times and concentrations in human wrists on a clinical magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scanner with a density-adapted radial sequence. We performed two studies with 10 volunteers each investigating either sodium T1 (study 1) or sodium T2* (study 2) relaxation times in the radiocarpal joint (RCJ) and midcarpal joint (MCJ). Sodium concentrations of both regions were determined. Objectives Our objective was to determine the prevalence of and factors associated with PIM in older patients admitted to a tertiary teaching hospital. Methods This was a cross-sectional study of patients aged ≥60 years admitted to a tertiary teaching hospital over a 3-month period. We used version 2 of the STOPP (Screening Tool of Older Persons' Prescriptions) criteria to identify PIM prescribing. Results Included in this study were 328 older patients prescribed at least one medication; the median age was 65.5 years (interquartile range [IQR] 62-71), and 53.7% were women. The median number of medications prescribed was five (IQR 2-8). In total, 128 (39%) patients had at least one PIM, and the most common criterion was antimuscarinic/anticholinergic drug burden. Here, we investigated whether eye behavior predicts the susceptibility to visual distraction during internally directed cognition. To this end, participants performed a divergent thinking task, which required internally directed attention, and we measured distraction in terms of attention capture by unrelated images. We used multilevel mixed models to predict visual distraction by eye behavior right before distractor onset. In Study 1 (N = 38), visual distraction was predicted by increased saccade and blink rate, and higher pupil dilation. We replicated these findings in Study 2 using the same task, but with less predictable distractor onsets and a larger sample (N = 144). We also explored whether individual differences in susceptibility to visual distraction were related to cognitive ability and task performance. Taken together, variation in eye behavior was found to be a consistent predictor of visual distraction during internally directed cognition. Sodium concentrations of both regions were determined. The number of older adults in the Philippines is increasing, and little is known about medication prescribing in this population. Objectives Our objective was to determine the prevalence of and factors associated with PIM in older patients admitted to a tertiary teaching hospital. Methods This was a cross-sectional study of patients aged ≥60 years admitted to a tertiary teaching hospital over a 3-month period. We used version 2 of the STOPP (Screening Tool of Older Persons' Prescriptions) criteria to identify PIM prescribing. Results Included in this study were 328 older patients prescribed at least one medication; the median age was 65.5 years (interquartile range [IQR] 62-71), and 53.7% were women. The median number of medications prescribed was five (IQR 2-8). In total, 128 (39%) patients had at least one PIM, and the most common criterion was antimuscarinic/anticholinergic drug burden.   • Subtropical lakes are increasingly subject to cyanobacterial blooms resulting from climate change and anthropogenic activities, but the lack of long-term historical data limits understanding of how climate changes have affected cyanobacterial growth in deep subtropical lakes. Using high-resolution DNA data derived from a sediment core from a deep lake in southwestern China, together with analysis of other sedimentary hydroclimatic proxies, we investigated cyanobacterial biomass and microbial biodiversity in relation to climate changes during the last millennium. Our results show that both cyanobacterial abundance and microbial biodiversity were higher during warmer periods, including the Medieval Warm Period (930-1350 CE) and the Current Warm Period (1900 CE-present), but lower during cold periods, including the Little Ice Age (1400-1850 CE). The significant increases in cyanobacterial abundance and microbial biodiversity during warmer intervals are probably because warm climate not only favors cyanobacterial growth but also concentrates lake water nutrients through water budgets between evaporation and precipitation. Furthermore, because rising temperatures result in greater vertical stratification in deep lakes, cyanobacteria may have exploited these stratified conditions and accumulated in dense surface blooms. We anticipate that under anthropogenic warming conditions, cyanobacterial biomass may continue to increase in subtropical deep lakes.Both climate change and agricultural intensification are drivers of global nutrient cycles and biodiversity loss. A potentially great environmental threat can arise when these two drivers interact, for example, when farmers try to compensate reduced soil nutrient availability due to drought by the application of liquid organic fertiliser. As dry soils don't hold **** nutrients very well, this approach can lead to nitrate leaching and potentially also to the pollution of drinking water. However, little is known about leaching from dry but fertilised grassland soil, and how this is affected by land use intensity and plant diversity. In this mesocosm study, we transferred 60 grassland sods differing in past land use intensity to a greenhouse and treated them with severe drought, fertilisation and both together. Drought was induced by almost entirely stopping irrigation for seven weeks. Fertilisation was done by three applications of slurry summing up to 168 kg total nitrogen per hectare (111 kg NH4-N). We developed the Urban Biophysical Environments and Technologies Simulator (UrbanBEATS), which integrates stormwater management with urban planning to support the design and implementation of WSUD. This study specifically describes and tests UrbanBEATS' WSUD Planning Module, which combines spatial analysis, infrastructure design, preference elicitation and Monte Carlo methods to generate feasible stormwater management and harvesting infrastructure options in greenfield and existing urban environments. By applying UrbanBEATS to a real-world greenfield development case study in Melbourne, Australia (with data sourced from the project's water management plans and design consultants), we explore the variety of options generated by the model and analyse them collectively to demonstrate that UrbanBEATS can design similar WSUD systems (e.g. select suitable technology types, their sizes and locations) to actual infrastructure choices.Although the ubiquitous presence of microplastics in various environments is increasingly well studied, knowledge of the effects of microplastics on ambient microbial communities is still insufficient. To estimate the response of soil bacterial community succession and temporal turnover to microplastic amendment, a soil microcosm experiment was carried out with polyethylene microplastics. For this purpose, the long and short-run impact of per capita income, FDI, and oil price on carbon emissions investigated by employing the ARDL and non-linear ARDL cointegration methodology, along with Granger causality in the context of Pakistan for 1971-2014. This study confirms the EKC hypothesis for Pakistan under both methodologies, whereas symmetric results show that economic growth and FDI intensify carbon emission in both the long and short-run, while oil price increase emission in the short-run and reduces emission in the long-run. Whereas asymmetric results in the long-run show that an increase in oil price reduces emissions and decrease in oil price intensify emissions. The causality analysis also supports the above findings and suggests a feedback effect between economic growth and carbon emission in Pakistan. This study provides implications for policymakers, where the descending flow of FDI allows limited space to Pakistan in FDI selection; however, the presence of emission convergence and adoption of carbon pricing may facilitate Pakistan in achieving its environmental targets. While diversifying the overall energy mix towards more renewable/clean energy along with formulating favorable policies for the adoption of renewable energy like solar by the industrial and residential consumers can further reduce the overall emission levels.

Method Review and meta-analysis based on the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines. Results A search for articles investigating cognitive insight in ARMS in the MEDLINE and ScienceDirect databases revealed five studies including 303 ARMS and 376 controls. Regarding BCIS subscales, ARMS individuals displayed significant higher scores for self-certainty than controls with a small-to-moderate effect size (ESg = 0.45 [0.23;0.67], P less then .005), whereas no significant difference was observed for self-reflectiveness (ESg = -0.56 [-0.18;1.29], P = .14). No significant differences were observed between ARMS and controls for overall cognitive insight abilities as indexed by the BCIS composite score (ESg = -0.24 [-0.43;0.91], P = .45). The enzyme-containing coacervate microdroplets, formed via liquid-liquid phase separation, act as invader protocells to electrostatically bind with the host HepG2 cell, resulting in assimilation. Subsequently, the glucose oxidation in the liquid coacervates initiates the generation of H2 O2 , which serves as an ROS resource to block cell proliferation. As a defense strategy, introduction of catalase (CAT) into the host cells is exploited to resist the ROS damage. CAT-mediated decomposition of H2 O2 leads to the ROS scavenging and results in the recovery of cell viability. The results obtained in the current study highlight the remarkable opportunities for the development of mutual interacting communities on the interface of artificial protocells/living cells. It is also the most common genetic cause of male infertility. KS subjects are typically tall, with small and firm testes, gynecomastia, broad hips, and sparse body hair, although a less evident presentation is also possible. KS is also characterized by a high prevalence of hypogonadism, metabolic syndrome (MetS) and cardiovascular disease. The aim of this article is to systematically review metabolic and the cardiovascular risk factors in KS patients. Hypogonadism has an important role in the pathogenesis of the changes in body composition (particularly visceral obesity) and hence of insulin resistance and MetS, but the association between KS and MetS may go beyond hypogonadism alone. From childhood, KS patients may show an increase in visceral fat with a reduction in lean body mass and an increase in glucose and impaired fat metabolism. Their increased incidence of congenital anomalies, epicardial adipose tissue, and thromboembolic disease suggests they have a higher risk of cardiovascular disease.

The silk-CNT materials, as a type of biocompatible electronic functional fibrous material for pressure and electric response humidity sensing, are further fabricated into a smart facial mask to implement respiration condition monitoring for remote diagnosis and medication.Aim To compare cognitive insight abilities measured with the Beck Cognitive Insight Scale (BCIS) between individuals with an at-risk mental state (ARMS) and healthy controls. Method Review and meta-analysis based on the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines. Results A search for articles investigating cognitive insight in ARMS in the MEDLINE and ScienceDirect databases revealed five studies including 303 ARMS and 376 controls. Regarding BCIS subscales, ARMS individuals displayed significant higher scores for self-certainty than controls with a small-to-moderate effect size (ESg = 0.45 [0.23;0.67], P less then .005), whereas no significant difference was observed for self-reflectiveness (ESg = -0.56 [-0.18;1.29], P = .14). No significant differences were observed between ARMS and controls for overall cognitive insight abilities as indexed by the BCIS composite score (ESg = -0.24 [-0.43;0.91], P = .45). Conclusions Self-certainty abnormalities seem to predate the expression of full-blown psychotic episode and to be higher in ARMS than in healthy controls. By contrast, ARMS did not display abnormal self-reflectiveness and overall cognitive insight abilities.The design and construction of mutual interaction models between artificial microsystems and living cells have the potential to open a wide range of novel applications in biomedical and biomimetic technologies. In this study, an artificial form of invasion-defense mutual interactions is established in a community of glucose oxidase (GOx)-containing liquid coacervate microdroplets and living cells, which interact via enzyme-mediated reactive oxygen species (ROS) damage. The enzyme-containing coacervate microdroplets, formed via liquid-liquid phase separation, act as invader protocells to electrostatically bind with the host HepG2 cell, resulting in assimilation. Subsequently, the glucose oxidation in the liquid coacervates initiates the generation of H2 O2 , which serves as an ROS resource to block cell proliferation. As a defense strategy, introduction of catalase (CAT) into the host cells is exploited to resist the ROS damage. CAT-mediated decomposition of H2 O2 leads to the ROS scavenging and results in the recovery of cell viability. The results obtained in the current study highlight the remarkable opportunities for the development of mutual interacting communities on the interface of artificial protocells/living cells. They also provide a new approach for engineering cellular behaviors through exploiting artificial nonliving microsystems.Klinefelter syndrome (KS), which normally presents with a 47,XXY karyotype, is the most common sex chromosome disorder in males. It is also the most common genetic cause of male infertility. KS subjects are typically tall, with small and firm testes, gynecomastia, broad hips, and sparse body hair, although a less evident presentation is also possible. KS is also characterized by a high prevalence of hypogonadism, metabolic syndrome (MetS) and cardiovascular disease. The aim of this article is to systematically review metabolic and the cardiovascular risk factors in KS patients. Hypogonadism has an important role in the pathogenesis of the changes in body composition (particularly visceral obesity) and hence of insulin resistance and MetS, but the association between KS and MetS may go beyond hypogonadism alone. From childhood, KS patients may show an increase in visceral fat with a reduction in lean body mass and an increase in glucose and impaired fat metabolism. Their increased incidence of congenital anomalies, epicardial adipose tissue, and thromboembolic disease suggests they have a higher risk of cardiovascular disease.

  • Toxicological analysis constitutes an important part of the acute treatment of poisonings. Timely laboratory results are essential for the patient to be diagnosed and treated appropriately, but also to exclude poisoning and avoid unnecessary overtreatment. Ingestion of ethylene glycol may cause acute kidney injury and, in severe cases, death, unless treated early with an antidote (ethanol infusion or fomepizole) to inhibit the formation of toxic metabolites. Diagnosis of poisoning is based on detection of ethylene glycol in plasma or serum, but a challenge remains that acute toxicology service is only available at major hospital laboratories using gas chromatography. A simple enzymatic method for the quantification of ethylene glycol (Catachem) was evaluated as a complement to currently used methods and demonstrated to provide fast and accurate measurement in a clinically relevant concentration range (1-80 mmol/l) with a minimal risk of analytical interference. The method is suitable for use on several automated clinical chemistry analyzers. Use of the enzymatic method can improve availability of acute toxicology service for ethylene glycol and contribute to better healthcare from both a patient and health resource perspective.Purpose To compare parental observations with the clinical evaluation findings in pediatric patients with intermittent exotropia and evaluate the clinical factors associated with the parental observations. Methods This prospective study included either one or both parents of pediatric patients with intermittent exotropia who visited the clinic between January and May 2019. The parental observations were assessed through a questionnaire that included questions on the age of onset, usually deviated eye, degree of awareness, and frequency of exotropia. These findings were compared with those of the clinical evaluations, including the amount of ocular deviation and level of control. Results A total of 100 parents (mean age 39.7 years; 78 women) of 95 pediatric patients (mean age 8.2 years; 47 girls) with intermittent exotropia participated in the study. The parental observation and clinical evaluation findings on the usually deviated eye showed good concordance (74%). The degree of parental awareness did not show any association with the amount of deviation. However, it showed a statistically significant increase associated with the worsening level of distance control (P = .04). The parental observations of the frequency of exotropia significantly increased with the worsening of the level of near (P = .037) and overall (P = .019) control. Conclusions Parental observations are more likely to correlate with the level of control than with the amount of ocular deviation in pediatric patients with intermittent exotropia. Of the 49 respondents (87.5%) who performed pediatric ruptured globe repair, 41.7% would perform simultaneous cataract extraction if anterior capsular violation existed, whereas 4.1% would do so without capsular violation (P less then .001). Results A total of 409 patients met the inclusion criteria and all were included in this study. The mean age was 7.74 years. Boys were injured more frequently than girls (60.4%). Most ocular injuries occurred between the ages of 2 and 9 years (51.8%). The most common sport was soccer, followed by ball/ice hockey, which differs from previous study findings. This may highlight the increasing popularity of soccer and the risk it may entail. Injuries occurred at home in 23.2% of cases. Final visual acuity was 20/40 or better in 77% of patients. Conclusions These findings are comparable to the authors' previous data and to those of the only other Canadian study done on this subject, with the exception of an increased incidence of soccer-related injuries in the current cohort, highlighting an area important to future prevention strategies. Methods Children (ages 8 to 18 years) with strabismic and/or anisometropic amblyopia were recruited from a single institution. All participants (n = 25) were prescribed 6 weeks of patching for 2 hours per day, and those whose visual acuity did not improve were randomized to binocular perceptual learning (n = 7), monocular perceptual learning (n = 8), or patching (n = 10) groups for 8 weeks in this prospective cohort study. After an 8-week long period of treatment cessation, during which participants stopped patching or perceptual learning, participants in the patching group were randomized to binocular or monocular perceptual learning training; those in the perceptual learning groups remained the same. Visual function was assessed by visual acuity, low contrast acuity, reading speed, stereoacuity, and binocularity; compliance was evaluated by exercise logs.

Objective Assess the effect of dexmedetomidine on hypotension following mesenteric traction. Design Prospective, randomized, controlled clinical trial. Setting Department of Anesthesiology, Zhenjiang First People's Hospital in China. Patients and methods Patients were randomly divided into three groups. Dexmedetomidine, 0.5 or 1.0 µg/kg, was intravenously administered over 15 minutes before skin incision followed by a maintenance rate of 0.5 µg/kg/h in groups D1 and D2, respectively; saline was administered in group C. Main outcome measure(s) The duration of hypotension, heart rate and plasma norepinephrine level in patients with MTS were recorded within 60 minutes following MT. Sample size 75 patients. Results The duration of hypotension in the MTS patients in group D1 and D2 was significantly longer than that in groups C (D1 vs. C, P less then .05; D2 vs. C, P less then .01). Significantly more phenylephrine was required to treat hypotension in group D1 and D2 than was required for patients in group C (P less then .05). The increase in heart rate during the first 15 minutes of MT in group D2 was significantly attenuated compared to that in group C (P less then .0083). The increases in norepinephrine levels during the first 15 minutes of MT in group C were significantly higher than those in groups D1 and D2 (P less then .0167). We present a case of an amoebic colitis with Crohn-like features and negative parasitological testing in a 53-years-old woman, in which the final diagnosis was established on the basis of its histopathological examination.Dermatofibrosarcoma protuberans is a quite rare local aggressive tumor of dermis and subcutis, revealing characteristic morphology and chromosomal translocation (17; 22)(q21;q13) with gene fusion COL1A1-PDGFB. The tumour almost never metastasizes and complete excision signs an excellent prognosis. Approximately in 10% of cases, dermatofibrosarcoma undergoes a fibrosarcomatous transformation associated with metastatic disease and worse prognosis. In this paper, we refer a case of a male patient with subcutaneous tumor in **** region, in which the small biopsy lead to diagnosis of a spindle cell sarcoma. However, only the histopathological examination of the entire tumor in the material from the radical surgery detected the dermatofibrosarcoma protuberans with fibrosarcomatous transformation. Both components of the tumor showed the characteristic genetic alteration. Identification of fibrosarcomatous component within the DFSP matters in prognosis. We present a case of an amoebic colitis with Crohn-like features and negative parasitological testing in a 53-years-old woman, in which the final diagnosis was established on the basis of its histopathological examination.Dermatofibrosarcoma protuberans is a quite rare local aggressive tumor of dermis and subcutis, revealing characteristic morphology and chromosomal translocation (17; 22)(q21;q13) with gene fusion COL1A1-PDGFB. The tumour almost never metastasizes and complete excision signs an excellent prognosis. Approximately in 10% of cases, dermatofibrosarcoma undergoes a fibrosarcomatous transformation associated with metastatic disease and worse prognosis. In this paper, we refer a case of a male patient with subcutaneous tumor in back region, in which the small biopsy lead to diagnosis of a spindle cell sarcoma. However, only the histopathological examination of the entire tumor in the material from the radical surgery detected the dermatofibrosarcoma protuberans with fibrosarcomatous transformation. Both components of the tumor showed the characteristic genetic alteration. Identification of fibrosarcomatous component within the DFSP matters in prognosis. Distinction between fibrosarcoma arising within the dermatofibrosarcoma protuberans and fibrosarcoma arising de novo is of therapeutic consequence the patients with metastatic or inoperable DFSP with fibrosarcomatous transformation may profit form imatinib treatment.Secondary vasculitides usually accompany various common and rare conditions, Their clinical picture is very diverse, they can be loclaized or genaralized. Most frequently, we find parainfectious, drug-related and paraneoplastic vasculitides, less commonly in connective tissue diseases, after radiotherapy or transplantation. Vasculitides may be associated to infection of any origin. Drug-related vasculitides are mainly confined to the skin with picture of leukocytoclastic angiitis but visceral organs may be involved too. Paraneoplastic vasculitides usually accompany solid tumours and lymphoproliferative processes. When related to connective tissue diseases we can observe vasculitis in rheumatoid arthritis, systemic lupus erythematosus, Sjoegren syndrome, systemic sclerosis and other conditions.
