Serum lipids and glucose, renal function, body mass index (BMI) and cardiovascular risk were evaluated before and 3 and 6 months after the initiation of TAF-based treatment. Results We identified 85 patients on TAF-based treatment. The third agent class remained stable in 68,6% of patients. The majority were men (82.9%), smokers (70%) and older than 40 years. Significant increases in lipids and BMI were noted, but cardiovascular risk remained lower than 7.5%. Renal function remained normal with a notable improvement among patients with renal impairment. Conclusions These results suggest that TAF has no significant effect on glucose and does not meaningfully increase cardiovascular risk, despite an elevation in serum lipids.

  • Background The anterior communicating artery complex may presente several anatomical variations, and many abnormalities have been reported in radiologiacal and cadaveric studies. Case Description The authors present a case of a 44-year-old Caucasian female, with a prior history of smoking and arterial systemic hypertension, admitted in the emergency department complaining of a sudden headache, nausea, and vomiting followed by tonic-clonic seizures. Computerized tomography (CT) and angiography (angio- CT) were carried out and showed Fisher Grade IV subarachnoid hemorrhage. Angio-CT revealed an anterior communicating artery (AComA) aneurysm. Minimally invasive craniotomy and microsurgical clipping were performed uneventfully. An unusual anatomical variation of the AComA complex characterized by duplication of the AComA associated with a triplication of anterior cerebral artery (ACA) was observed. The patient was discharged with no neurological deficits. Concluision This unique anatomical variation of the AComA-ACA complex constitute risck factors for development and rupture of aneurysms. On admission proptosis and downward deviation of the right orbit was noticed on the physical exam and with exception of limited right upgaze, external ocular movements were maintained. Head computed tomography showed a multiloculate expansive osteolytic lesion at the right orbital roof. On magnetic resonance imaging, the lesion had an inner content with septations, T1-weighted imaging heterogeneous signal, T2-weighted imaging high signal intensity, and peripheral contrast enhancement. The patient underwent a right frontal craniotomy with a gross total resection and the postoperative follow-up was uneventful. Menzel reported the first case in 1782. The clinical findings depend on localization. There are five subtypes. In general, the lesions have a radiological appearance with hyperdense boundary and cause deformity and destruction in bones with high recurrence risk. Radical resection is curative. Conclusion As a result, the correlation of clinical, radiologic, and pathologic data is significant while going for a specific diagnosis in cases of craniofacial fibrous lesions. Total excision is the best treatment, but it can recur. Methods In patients with chronic, acute, or subacute lumbar disease, obtaining both MR and CT studies is critical to correctly diagnose; disc disease, hypertrophy/ossification of the yellow ligament (OYL), stenosis, with/without degenerative spondylolisthesis, and/or synovial cysts (SC). Results MR T2 weighted images directly demonstrate hyperintensity within a SC. They initially cause lateral recess/caudad nerve root and/foraminal compromise, with larger extrusions causing significant lateral thecal sac, and far lateral/superior cephalad root compromise. CT 2 mm cuts often better demonstrate mid-vertebral level compression of cephalad nerve roots with/without SC calcification, along with the extent of mid-vertebral stenosis, hypertrophy/OYL, and DS. When CT studies directly document SC calcification, it alerts the surgeon to the increased potential risk of creating a cerebrospinal fluid fistula with full SC excision, and should prompt the adoption of alternative measures such as decompression/partial removal. Most critically, surgery for synovial cysts often warrants a 2-level laminectomy for fuller visualization of the cephalad and caudad nerve roots, and clearer differentiation of neural tissues from the large fibrotic SC capsule, to effect safer removal. Conclusions Preoperatively, establishing the full cephalad and cauda extent of lumbar synovial cysts with both MR and CT studies is critical. Anticipation and better visualization of the foraminal/far lateral and superior extent of these lesions often warrants more extensive multilevel laminectomies for thecal sac and both cephalad and caudad root decompression. However, its onset more than 1-year postoperatively is rare. Case Description A 45-year-old male initially underwent a C3-4 and C5-6 anterior cervical discectomy and fusion (ACDF). At age 49, 4 years later, he presented with worsening dysphagia accompanied by neck and right upper extremity pain. Radiographs demonstrated an extruded left C3 screw, which had migrated into the prevertebral soft tissues at the C4-C5 level; there was also loosening of the right C3 screw. The subsequent barium swallow study revealed that the screw was embedded in the pharyngeal wall. The patient required a two-stage operation; first, to remove the anterior instrumentation, and second, to perform a posterior instrumented C2-T2 fusion. Conclusion A barium swallow study and other dynamic imaging are a valuable component of the diagnostic workup and therapeutic intervention to evaluate the delayed onset dysphagia following an ACDF. Surgical approaches often require extensive bone resection and neurovascular manipulation. Visualization of low-lying BX aneurysms is typically obscured by the posterior clinoid and upper clivus and poses a unique challenge. Subtemporal or anterolateral approaches with a posterior clinoidectomy are often required to achieve adequate exposure, though these maneuvers can add invasiveness, risk, and morbidity to the procedure. Endoscopes and, more recently, fluoroscopic angiography capable endoscopes offer the possibility of providing improved visualization with less exposure allowing for minimally invasive clipping. Case Description We present the case of a 42-year-old female with incidentally found 5 mm middle cerebral artery and 5 mm BX aneurysms. She underwent a minimally invasive supraorbital keyhole craniotomy for the clipping of both aneurysms.

  • BACKGROUND The albumin-bilirubin (ALBI) score was validated as a prognostic indicator in patients with liver disease and hepatocellular carcinoma. Incorporating platelet count in the platelet-albumin-bilirubin (PALBI) score improved validity in predicting outcome of patients undergoing resection and ablation. AIM To evaluate the PALBI score in predicting outcome of acute variceal bleeding in patients with cirrhosis. METHODS The data of 1517 patients with cirrhosis presenting with variceal bleeding were analyzed. Child Turcotte Pugh (CTP) class, Model of End-stage Liver Disease (MELD), ALBI and PALBI scores were calculated on admission, and were correlated to the outcome of variceal bleeding. Areas under the receiving-operator characteristic curve (AUROC) were calculated for survival and rebleeding. RESULTS Mean age was 52.6 years; 1176 were male (77.5%), 69 CTP-A (4.5%), 434 CTP-B (29.2%), 1014 CTP-C (66.8%); 306 PALBI-1 (20.2%), 285 PALBI-2 (18.8%), and 926 PALBI-3 (61.1%). Three hundred and thirty-two patients died during hospitalization (21.9%). Bleeding-related mortality occurred in 11% of CTP-B, 28% of CTP-C, in 21.8% of PALBI-2 and 34.4% of PALBI-3 patients. The AUROC for predicting survival of acute variceal bleeding was 0.668, 0.689, 0.803 and 0.871 for CTP, MELD, ALBI and PALBI scores, respectively. For predicting rebleeding the AUROC was 0.681, 0.74, 0.766 and 0.794 for CTP, MELD, ALBI and PALBI scores, respectively. CONCLUSION PALBI score on admission is a good prognostic indicator for patients with acute variceal bleeding and predicts early mortality and rebleeding. ©The Author(s) 2020. A high ratio may promote lipogenic pathways and contribute to reactive oxygen species (ROS)-mediated damage, perhaps leading to mitochondrial dysfunction. More interestingly, corner focusing modes and splitting of the corner focusing were observed with increasing Re, which could explain the origin of the inertial focusing position changes in triangular channels.
    BACKGROUND The albumin-bilirubin (ALBI) score was validated as a prognostic indicator in patients with liver disease and hepatocellular carcinoma. Incorporating platelet count in the platelet-albumin-bilirubin (PALBI) score improved validity in predicting outcome of patients undergoing resection and ablation. AIM To evaluate the PALBI score in predicting outcome of acute variceal bleeding in patients with cirrhosis. METHODS The data of 1517 patients with cirrhosis presenting with variceal bleeding were analyzed. Child Turcotte Pugh (CTP) class, Model of End-stage Liver Disease (MELD), ALBI and PALBI scores were calculated on admission, and were correlated to the outcome of variceal bleeding. Areas under the receiving-operator characteristic curve (AUROC) were calculated for survival and rebleeding. RESULTS Mean age was 52.6 years; 1176 were male (77.5%), 69 CTP-A (4.5%), 434 CTP-B (29.2%), 1014 CTP-C (66.8%); 306 PALBI-1 (20.2%), 285 PALBI-2 (18.8%), and 926 PALBI-3 (61.1%). Three hundred and thirty-two patients died during hospitalization (21.9%). Bleeding-related mortality occurred in 11% of CTP-B, 28% of CTP-C, in 21.8% of PALBI-2 and 34.4% of PALBI-3 patients. The AUROC for predicting survival of acute variceal bleeding was 0.668, 0.689, 0.803 and 0.871 for CTP, MELD, ALBI and PALBI scores, respectively. For predicting rebleeding the AUROC was 0.681, 0.74, 0.766 and 0.794 for CTP, MELD, ALBI and PALBI scores, respectively. CONCLUSION PALBI score on admission is a good prognostic indicator for patients with acute variceal bleeding and predicts early mortality and rebleeding. ©The Author(s) 2020.   • Past research showed on-road emissions patterns unique to hybrid electric vehicles (HEVs), indicating the need to account for them in emissions models as projected HEV sales increase over the coming decades. This work defines and characterizes a variable that quantifies HEV operating behavior to inform future development of new HEV emissions models based on current knowledge of conventional vehicle (CV) emissions patterns. Instantaneous hybridization factor (IHF), was quantified using on-road data collected from a 2010 Toyota Camry HEV. IHF is the ratio of electric system power to total system power and accounts for energy storage in the high voltage battery (IHF ranges from -1 to +1). Relationships between IHF and vehicle specific power (VSP), road type and road grade were examined. Negative VSP resulted in regenerative braking operation (IHF = -0.01 to -1) 90% of the time. IHF identified the VSP range where HEV operation was highly variable (VSP = -1 to 8 kW/ton) when driving at speeds below the ICE-off threshold (42 mph). VSP and IHF together account for 76-86% of the variability in HEV CO2 emissions in this study. In this study, with the help of CROPWAT 8.0 model, we estimate the water footprint requirement (WFr) of main crops growth for 2005, 2010 and 2015 in Zhangjiakou City, an extreme water shortage region in northern China, and three new indicators are introduced, i.e., green water footprint occupancy rate (GWFor), blue water footprint deficit (BWFd), and virtual water consumption per output value (VWV). The results indicate that the total WFr increased from 1.671 billion m3 to 1.852 billion m3 during the study period, of which the green water was always about twice as the blue water. Cereals, as the main staple food, had the largest WFr, while the WFr of potatoes increased the fastest, which was the result of large-scale promotion of potato cultivation in recent years. The spatial characteristics of the GWFor and BWFd are closely related to altitude, that is, the GWFor was less than 50% in higher-altitude Bashang area, while it was more than 50% in lower-altitude Baxia area, and the BWFd was generally smaller in Bashang area than in Baxia area. Due to differences in crop types and food prices, higher water footprint food productivity does not absolutely mean higher water footprint economic productivity. Therefore, it is vital to consider from two perspectives (food yields priority or economic benefits priority) to formulate a reasonable water footprint utilization policy. This study is expected to broaden the investigation of crop water footprint and make a contribution to sustainable agricultural water management.Objective Media coverage of disorders and medical advancements can impact public perception regarding the riskiness, effectiveness, and accessibility of treatment options. We studied that coverage for epilepsy with a focus on surgical interventions and emerging neurotechnologies. Methods Epilepsy-related English language articles published through 2019 were retrieved from online International news media with a circulation of 80,000 or above. We used directed content analysis of news articles to code content into a priori categories both to identify salient themes and to characterize their valence. Results One hundred forty-six unique articles matched our search terms. Overall, there was a steady increase in epilepsy reporting over time, with a majority of articles published with a positive tone. Neuromodulation was the focus of over 50% of all the articles in the time points analyzed. Vagus nerve stimulation (VNS) and deep-brain stimulation (DBS) were discussed more prominently than other types of neurotechnological interventions; VNS was the neurotechnological focus in 39% of the pediatric articles; resective surgery was the focus in 34% of adult articles. Access, support, and epilepsy literacy were the central themes in the context of ethical, legal, and social issues. Significance News media can influence the trust that the public places in science and medicine, and by extension, influences health policy. As innovations in neurotechnology for epilepsy emerge, understanding of individual and societal values is essential to their beneficial evolution and translation to care.Objective Treatment-emergent adverse events (TEAEs) in clinical trials are typically reported for the full duration of the treatment period including titration and maintenance. Unlike prior ASM clinical trials, a novel design was used for brivaracetam (BRV) without initial drug titration allowing assessment of habituation to TEAEs separate from dose titration. Methods Data were pooled from three studies (N01252 [NCT00490035], N01253 [NCT00464269], N01358 [NCT01261325]) in adult patients (≥16 years of age) with focal seizures receiving BRV adjunctive therapy. This post hoc analysis reports data on the prevalence and incidence of all drug-related CNS TEAEs and all TEAEs over time in patients who received BRV doses of 50-200 mg/day (without titration) vs. placebo during a 12-week treatment period.

  • Ferrocenes are versatile ligand scaffolds, complexes of which have found numerous applications in catalysis. Structurally similar but of higher redox stabilites are sandwich complexes of the [Re(η6-arene)2]+ type. We report herein routes for conjugating potential ligands to a single or to both arenes in this scaffold. Since the arene rings can freely rotate, the [Re(η6-arene)2]+ has a high degree of structural flexibility. Polypyridyl ligands were successfully introduced. The coordination of Co(ii) to such a model tetrapyridyl-Re(i)-bis-benzene complex produced a bimetallic Re(i)-Co(ii) complex. To show the stability of the resulting architecture, a selected complex was subjected to photocatalytic reactions. It showed good activity in proton reduction over a long time and did not decompose, corroborating its extraordinary stability even under light irradiation. https://www.selleckchem.com/products/chir-124.html Its activity compares well with the parent catalyst in turn over numbers and frequencies. Herein, detailed applications of MAX and MXene are studied in the fields of microwave absorption and Li ion batteries (LIB). In particular, coatings based on MAX, MXene, ball-milled NanoMAX, and NanoMAX-derived-MXene (MXene-N) and their composites are examined in terms of their comparative efficacy for the aforesaid applications. NanoMAX and MXene-N based composites with graphite exhibit superior performance with specific reflection loss values (representing absorbance when measured with metal-backing) of -21.4 and -19 dB cm3 g-1, respectively, as compared to their bulk counterparts, that too with a low density (0.63 g cm-3) and very small thickness (0.03 mm). These performance improvements in absorbance in only 30 μm coatings can be attributed to reflective losses compounded with multiple internal reflections within the nanocomposite intensified by dielectric losses, arising from high interface density. The pristine samples were also studied for their performance as Li ion battery anodes. Herein, MXene-N exhibits the best performance with a specific capacity of 330 mA h g-1 at 100 mA g-1 and excellent cycling stability tested up to 1000 cycles.We report on the shear rheology of liquid crystalline solutions composed of charged, rodlike polymers that form supramolecular assemblies dispersed in water. Under steady shear, we observe shear thickening behavior, followed by a hesitation in the viscosity accompanied by an extremely narrow range of negative first normal stress difference. The Peclet number (Pe, shear rate normalized by rod rotational diffusivity) for the onset of shear thickening is in agreement with previous, high-resolution numerical simulations of the Doi-Edwards-Hess kinetic theory. We interrogate these dynamic responses through shear step-down experiments, revealing a complex evolution of transient responses. We describe the case of a 39-year-old male, who presented to our emergency department after a one-day history of headache and vomiting, with associated sudden onset posterior neck pain and cerebellar signs following a massage. Computed tomography angiogram and brain demonstrated bilateral vertebral artery dissection and cerebellar stroke. He was admitted to hospital for monitoring and conservative management with antiplatelet therapy, resulting in a good outcome. This is the first reported case of bilateral vertebral artery dissection and stroke to be associated with massage. This case also suggests, unlike many reports in the literature, that significant vascular pathology can result from massage even without cervical spine manipulation.There has been a lot of speculation that patients with coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) who are receiving angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitors or angiotensin receptor blockers (ARBs) may be at increased risk for adverse outcomes.     Ferrocenes are versatile ligand scaffolds, complexes of which have found numerous applications in catalysis. Structurally similar but of higher redox stabilites are sandwich complexes of the [Re(η6-arene)2]+ type. We report herein routes for conjugating potential ligands to a single or to both arenes in this scaffold. Since the arene rings can freely rotate, the [Re(η6-arene)2]+ has a high degree of structural flexibility. Polypyridyl ligands were successfully introduced. The coordination of Co(ii) to such a model tetrapyridyl-Re(i)-bis-benzene complex produced a bimetallic Re(i)-Co(ii) complex. To show the stability of the resulting architecture, a selected complex was subjected to photocatalytic reactions. Herein, detailed applications of MAX and MXene are studied in the fields of microwave absorption and Li ion batteries (LIB). In particular, coatings based on MAX, MXene, ball-milled NanoMAX, and NanoMAX-derived-MXene (MXene-N) and their composites are examined in terms of their comparative efficacy for the aforesaid applications. NanoMAX and MXene-N based composites with graphite exhibit superior performance with specific reflection loss values (representing absorbance when measured with metal-backing) of -21.4 and -19 dB cm3 g-1, respectively, as compared to their bulk counterparts, that too with a low density (0.63 g cm-3) and very small thickness (0.03 mm). These performance improvements in absorbance in only 30 μm coatings can be attributed to reflective losses compounded with multiple internal reflections within the nanocomposite intensified by dielectric losses, arising from high interface density. The pristine samples were also studied for their performance as Li ion battery anodes. Herein, MXene-N exhibits the best performance with a specific capacity of 330 mA h g-1 at 100 mA g-1 and excellent cycling stability tested up to 1000 cycles.We report on the shear rheology of liquid crystalline solutions composed of charged, rodlike polymers that form supramolecular assemblies dispersed in water. Under steady shear, we observe shear thickening behavior, followed by a hesitation in the viscosity accompanied by an extremely narrow range of negative first normal stress difference. The Peclet number (Pe, shear rate normalized by rod rotational diffusivity) for the onset of shear thickening is in agreement with previous, high-resolution numerical simulations of the Doi-Edwards-Hess kinetic theory. We interrogate these dynamic responses through shear step-down experiments, revealing a complex evolution of transient responses. Detailed analysis of the stress transients provides compelling evidence that the principal axis of the rod orientational distribution, the nematic director, undergoes a cascade of transitions and coexistence of periodic states known as kayaking, tumbling, and wagging, before transitioning to steady flow alignment above a critical shear rate.Dissection of a cervical artery is a well-known cause of stroke, especially in younger patients. We describe the case of a 39-year-old male, who presented to our emergency department after a one-day history of headache and vomiting, with associated sudden onset posterior neck pain and cerebellar signs following a massage. Computed tomography angiogram and brain demonstrated bilateral vertebral artery dissection and cerebellar stroke. He was admitted to hospital for monitoring and conservative management with antiplatelet therapy, resulting in a good outcome. This is the first reported case of bilateral vertebral artery dissection and stroke to be associated with massage. This case also suggests, unlike many reports in the literature, that significant vascular pathology can result from massage even without cervical spine manipulation.There has been a lot of speculation that patients with coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) who are receiving angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitors or angiotensin receptor blockers (ARBs) may be at increased risk for adverse outcomes. In New Zealand, privatisation and competition led to income inequality and an unequal distribution of the 'determinants of health', a burden borne disproportionately by children, the poor, and by Māori and Pacific people. Limiting health expenditure led to inequalities in access to services with restructuring in the 1990s, subverting the service culture of the health system. Failure to regulate for the protection of citizens has undermined health and safety systems, the security of work and collective approaches to health improvement. The present study aimed to investigate the effects of 15-hydroxy-6α,12-epoxy-7β,10αH,11βH-spiroax-4-ene-12-one (HESEO), a compound extracted from the endophytic fungus Penicillium sp. FJ-1 isolated from Avicennia marina, on the proliferation of osteosarcoma cells and to explore its underlying mechanisms of action. Cell number was counted to measure the cell proliferation. JC-1 reagent was used to measure mitochondrial membrane potential. ELISA was used to measure the cytochrome c level and caspase activities. Apoptosis was detected by Annexin V-Propidium Iodide staining. Gene and protein expression were measured by reverse-transcription-PCR and western blot analysis, respectively. Additionally, the anti-tumor effects of HESEO were explored within a syngeneic osteosarcoma tumor model. The results suggested that HESEO significantly inhibited the proliferation of osteosarcoma cells and induced apoptosis of MG-63 cells, evidenced by their decreased mitochondrial membrane potential, and increased cytochrome c release, caspase activities and percentage of apoptotic cells. In addition, HESEO increased the expression of pro-apoptotic genes and proteins compared with control cells. The results indicated that HESEO may act through increasing p53 upregulated modulator of apoptosis expression. A total of 182 patients with a history of spontaneous abortions were recruited from July 2015 to August 2017. G-banding cytogenetic analysis and novel high-throughput ligation-dependent probe amplification (HLPA) techniques were performed on conception in all 182 patients to detect chromosomal abnormalities. Low-coverage whole-genome sequencing (WGS) was performed in 74 patients to detect copy number variations (CNVs). There were no significant differences in the incidence of karyotype abnormalities between patients with sporadic miscarriages (48.0%; SM group) and patients suffering recurrent spontaneous abortions (44.8%; RSA group). The maternal age was markedly higher in patients with 3 miscarriages. WGS indicated that the incidence of pathogenic CNVs in the RSA group was higher than that in the SM group, but the difference was not significant.

NiTAPc was covalently attached to the surface of graphene oxide to prepare NiTAPc-Gr, which exhibits remarkable stability and PEC performance. In situ growth of Au QDs on the NiTAPc-Gr surface was achieved using chemical reduction at room temperature. The synthesized materials were characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. Au QDs@NiTAPc-Gr provided a **** greater photocurrent than NiTAPc-Gr, making it suitable for the ultrasensitive PEC detection of epinephrine. Copyright © 2020 American Chemical Society.The present work reported the polyaniline (PANI) and multiwalled carbon nanotube (MWCNT)-based nanocomposite as a sensing material for the determination of aqueous ammonia by the enhanced fluorescence method. The excitation wavelength-dependent photoluminescence (PL) intensity has shown dual emission peaks at 340 and 380 nm that correspond to two different excitation energy states. The pH-based PL intensity and zeta potential variation were analyzed to optimize the suitable medium for aqueous ammonia sensing. Zeta potential was found to shift from 4 to -21 mV upon changing the pH of the the solution from acidic to alkaline medium. The fluorescence intensity of PANI/MWCNTs was found to increase upon increasing the pH from 3.0 to 6.0 (acidic region) and exhibits a plateau upon further increasing the pH from 7.0 to 12 (basic region). The PANI/MWCNT composite has shown a linear response to aqueous ammonia concentration varying from 25 to 200 μM with a correlation coefficient (R 2) of 0.99 and a limit of detection of 15.19 μM. The presence of relevant interference molecules and physiological ions had no influence on the detection of aqueous ammonia. Field-level study demonstrated that the level of aqueous ammonia can be determined selectively by using the PANI/MWCNT composite for various applications. Macrophages are phagocytic immune cells that play a critical role in wound healing and tissue regeneration in a wide range of species. We hypothesize that macrophages regulate the process of lizard tail regeneration, and that comparisons with mammalian cell populations will yield insight into the role phagocytes play in determining an organism's regenerative potential. Single cell RNA sequencing (scRNAseq) was used to profile lizard immune cells and compare with mouse counterparts to contrast cell types between the two species. Treatment with clodronate liposomes effectively inhibited lizard tail stump tissue ablation and subsequent regeneration, and scRNAseq was used to profile changes in lizard immune cell populations resulting from tail amputation as well as identifying specific cell types affected by clodronate treatment. ScRNAseq analysis of lizard bone marrow, peripheral blood, and tissue-resident phagocyte cell populations was used to trace marker progression during macrophage differentiation and activation. https://www.selleckchem.com/products/scriptaid.html These results indicated that lizard macrophages are recruited to tail amputation injuries faster than mouse populations and express high levels of matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs). The Particle Therapy Co-Operative Group (PTCOG) is the largest international community of particle/proton therapy providers. Participating experts are/were affiliated with the member institutions of the PTCOG Ocular subcommittee with long-standing high-volume proton ocular programs. The practices reviewed in this document must be taken in conjunction with local hospital procedures, multidisciplinary recommendations, and regional/national guidelines, as each community may have its unique needs, supplies, and protocols. Importantly, as the pandemic evolves, so will the strategies and recommendations. Given the unique circumstances for UM patients, along with indications of potential ophthalmologic transmission as a result of healthcare providers working in close proximity to patients and intrinsic infectious risk from eyelashes, tears and hair, practice strategies may be adapted to reduce the risk of viral transmission. Zeta potential was found to shift from 4 to -21 mV upon changing the pH of the the solution from acidic to alkaline medium. The fluorescence intensity of PANI/MWCNTs was found to increase upon increasing the pH from 3.0 to 6.0 (acidic region) and exhibits a plateau upon further increasing the pH from 7.0 to 12 (basic region). The PANI/MWCNT composite has shown a linear response to aqueous ammonia concentration varying from 25 to 200 μM with a correlation coefficient (R 2) of 0.99 and a limit of detection of 15.19 μM. The presence of relevant interference molecules and physiological ions had no influence on the detection of aqueous ammonia. Field-level study demonstrated that the level of aqueous ammonia can be determined selectively by using the PANI/MWCNT composite for various applications. Macrophages are phagocytic immune cells that play a critical role in wound healing and tissue regeneration in a wide range of species. We hypothesize that macrophages regulate the process of lizard tail regeneration, and that comparisons with mammalian cell populations will yield insight into the role phagocytes play in determining an organism's regenerative potential. Single cell RNA sequencing (scRNAseq) was used to profile lizard immune cells and compare with mouse counterparts to contrast cell types between the two species. Treatment with clodronate liposomes effectively inhibited lizard tail stump tissue ablation and subsequent regeneration, and scRNAseq was used to profile changes in lizard immune cell populations resulting from tail amputation as well as identifying specific cell types affected by clodronate treatment. The Particle Therapy Co-Operative Group (PTCOG) is the largest international community of particle/proton therapy providers. Participating experts are/were affiliated with the member institutions of the PTCOG Ocular subcommittee with long-standing high-volume proton ocular programs. The practices reviewed in this document must be taken in conjunction with local hospital procedures, multidisciplinary recommendations, and regional/national guidelines, as each community may have its unique needs, supplies, and protocols. Importantly, as the pandemic evolves, so will the strategies and recommendations.   • The development of a safe, effective and affordable prophylactic vaccine against hepatitis C virus (HCV) remains a medical priority. Hepatitis ****subviral envelope particles, which could be produced by industrial procedures adapted from those established for the hepatitis B virus vaccine, appear promising for use for this purpose. The prototype HBV-HCV bivalent vaccine-bearing genotype 1a HCV envelopes can induce neutralizing antibodies against this genotype, but is less effective against other genotypes. We show here, in a small animal model, that the use of a set of vaccine particles harbouring envelopes from different HCV genotypes in various association strategies can induce broad neutralizing protection or an optimized protection against a particular genotype prevalent in a given region, such as genotype 4 in Egypt. This vaccine could help to control the hepatitis C epidemic worldwide.The aim of the randomised trial was to compare conventional semen parameters, sperm DNA fragmentation levels and satisfaction levels between semen samples collected at home and at the clinic. We recruited 110 men with a history of infertility for at least 1 year from the outpatient andrology clinic. Each man collected two semen samples, one at home and one at the clinic. Men were randomly assigned into the home first (n = 55) or clinic first (n = 55) groups. The primary outcome was sperm concentration. There was no significant difference in sperm concentration, sperm DNA fragmentation levels or other conventional semen parameters between home first and clinic first samples (p > .05), while satisfaction levels were significantly higher for home first samples (p less then .01). Results Four latent groups of smokers (heavy smokers, light smokers, smokers using NRT, smokers using e-cigarettes) and two recently quit smokers (abstinent ex-smokers, ex-smokers using e-cigarettes) were identified. Nearly half the participants (48.9%) were heavy or light smokers who did not use alternative nicotine products and largely had not tried quitting smoking. Latent groups were relatively stable and transitions to quitting smoking were more probable in groups of smokers using alternative nicotine products. Smokers using NRT transitioned mostly to abstinent ex-smokers, and smokers using e-cigarettes to ex-smokers using e-cigarettes' groups (11.2% and 11.4%, respectively). The abstinent ex-smokers group grew the most at follow-up (+6.3%). Discussion and conclusions Nearly half of the participants continued smoking without having tried to reduce harm or quit. Of smokers who transitioned, the majority quit smoking and abstained from nicotine altogether.   • Eating habits have been analysed for years as a factor influencing the development of autoimmune diseases and susceptibility to infections. On the basis of research, observational studies and meta-analyses, special attention was paid to omega-3 and omega-6 acids. The purpose of the review is to show the importance of omega-3 and omega-6 acids as important ingredients in the healthy diet and as factors protecting against the development of the most common inflammatory rheumatic diseases. The influence of these omega-3 and -6 acids on the course of rheumatic diseases and arguments for their use as complementary therapy are also presented. However, biological agents can evoke adverse reactions of different grades of severity. Although drug avoidance remains a gold standard in the care of patients hypersensitive to medication, in certain clinical situations the culprit drug is the drug of choice and cannot be replaced by another equally effective compound. In such cases, desensitization can allow the patient to be treated within current guidelines and with the most effective treatment. The authors searched Medline and Scopus databases for English-language sources using the following key words hypersensitivity, desensitization, biologicals, adalimumab, etanercept, adalimumab, certolizumab, golimumab, rituximab, infliximab, ixekizumab, tocilizumab, anakinra and canakinumab. The aim of our review is to present the current knowledge about desensitization to biological agents and some guidelines according to patient inclusion, contraindications, procedures, and safety requirements. Drug desensitization is a new issue in rheumatology, and the solution to the problem of allergic reactions to biological drugs, which gives patients with rheumatic diseases the opportunity to extend and prolong their therapy. The present article is one of the first widely discussing this topic in the biological treatment of rheumatic diseases. The aim of our study was to determine the clinical signs of heritable disorders of connective tissue and oxyproline levels in children with acute rheumatic fever (ARF) and rheumatic heart disease (RHD). Material and methods A total of 155 patients aged 4 to 17 years participated in the study 23 with ARF, 78 with RHD, and 54 healthy patients with a history of ARF. All patients underwent a standardized examination protocol, which consisted of a detailed medical history recorded by the physician, general and special laboratory tests, electrocardiogram, echocardiography, and Doppler echocardiography. Special attention was paid to the clinical signs of HDCT. The intensity of the metabolic processes in the connective tissue was evaluated by serum oxyproline levels. According to the report of the National Institute of Public Health - National Institute of Hygiene in 2018, 40 cases of acute hepatitis B were noted while still in the 1980s between 10 and 20 thousand new cases were reported annually. The aim of the study was to determine whether in children treated with biological drugs (adalimumab, etanercept, infliximab) due to juvenile idiopathic arthritis (JIA), vaccinated against hepatitis B in infancy, a protective concentration of anti-HBs antibodies persists. In patients, the value ≥ 10 mIU/ml is regarded as a protective concentration of antibodies, determined at least four weeks after administration of the last vaccine dose. Among healthy individuals, presence of anti-HBs antibodies in any concentration means seroprotection. No booster vaccinations are recommeion should be started. The aim of the study was to assess the confounding effect of obesity on the levels of erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR) and C-reactive protein (CRP) in patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) in low disease activity state or remission as indicated by clinical disease activity index (CDAI). Material and methods Adult RA patients with CDAI less than 10 were divided into two groups obese and non-obese, based on body mass index. Relevant exclusions were applied to eliminate causes of raised inflammatory markers other than obesity. The difference of CRP and ESR levels between the obese and non-obese groups was analyzed. Results Obese patients with RA (n = 85) had higher CRP and ESR than non-obese patients (n = 66) (p-values 0.008 and 0.000005, respectively). The aim of the study was to assess the confounding effect of obesity on the levels of erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR) and C-reactive protein (CRP) in patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) in low disease activity state or remission as indicated by clinical disease activity index (CDAI). Material and methods Adult RA patients with CDAI less than 10 were divided into two groups obese and non-obese, based on body mass index. Relevant exclusions were applied to eliminate causes of raised inflammatory markers other than obesity. The difference of CRP and ESR levels between the obese and non-obese groups was analyzed. Results Obese patients with RA (n = 85) had higher CRP and ESR than non-obese patients (n = 66) (p-values 0.008 and 0.000005, respectively).
