In a historical cohort (n=1524), preoperative circulating neutrophil and lymphocyte counts were analyzed for associations with overall survival (OS). RESULTS Circulating neutrophil populations were positively correlated with increased tumor burden, and surgical tumor resection wa patients undergoing NSCLC resection. The structure revealed that this OatA domain adopts an SGNH-hydrolase fold and possesses a canonical catalytic triad. Site-specific replacement of active-site amino acids revealed the presence of a water-coordinating aspartate residue that limits esterase activity. This residue, although conserved in staphyloccocal OatA and most other homologs, is not present in the previously characterized streptococcal OatA. In this study, using truncated FUT8 constructs, immunofluorescence staining, FACS analysis, cell-surface biotinylation, proteomics, and LC-electrospray ionization-MS analyses, we reveal that the SH3 domain is essential for FUT8 activity both in cells and in vitro and identified His-535 in the SH3 domain as the critical residue for enzymatic activity of FUT8. Furthermore, we found that although FUT8 is mainly localized to the Golgi, it also partially localizes to the cell surface in an SH3-dependent manner, indicating that the SH3 domain is also involved in FUT8 trafficking. Finally, we identified ribophorin I (RPN1), a subunit of the oligosaccharyltransferase (OST) complex, as an SH3-dependent binding protein of FUT8. RPN1 knockdown decreased both FUT8 activity and core fucose levels, indicating that RPN1 stimulates FUT8 activity. Biochemical and MS-based analyses revealed that protein kinase Cι (PKCι) directly phosphorylates UBF1 at Ser-412, thereby generating a phospho-peptide-binding epitope that binds the ECT2 **** domain. The bacterium Kluyvera georgiana ****3673 transfers electrons directly to the electrode for bio-electricity generation in microbial fuel cell (MFC). This could be due to the formation of biofilm on the surface of electrode or with through the extracellular appendages, or both. The role of extracellular appendages pili and flagella in exo-electron transfer mechanism was investigated. The expression level of the genes fli P and pil Q for pili and flagella, respectively, in K. georgiana ****3673 was compared in ****and in shake flask. The transcript analysis was done by qRT-PCR at different times and conditions. The expression level of pil Q transcript in K. georgiana ****3673 showed over twofold higher expression during bio-electrogenic process, compared to the one inoculated in shake flask. Similarly, fli P had also showed similar kind of expression in ****compared to that in shake flask. Higher level of pil Q and fli P transcripts were observed throughout bio-electrogenic process. The level of pil Q was found to be nearly fourfold higher in biofilm-forming cells forming compared to the cells in suspension form. The obtained results suggest that flagella have a role in movement of bacterium towards electrode for donating the electron in absence of oxygen, and pili aiding in adhering on the surface of electrode and forming biofilm. The cumulative effect of fli P and pil Q resulted in exo-electron transfer to the electrode and bio-electricity generation process. The open circuit potential (OCV) of + 0.7 V was produced with the maximum power density of 393 ± 14 mW/m2 in MFC. © King Abdulaziz City for Science and Technology 2020.INTRODUCTION Unprovoked venous thromboembolism (uVTE) may be the first manifestation of cancer. The main objectives of this study were to compare limited screening (LS) and extended screening (ES) and to make a protocol to approach these patients. METHODS This is a retrospective, unicentric observational study that included 245 patients with venous thromboembolism (VTE) admitted to an Internal Medicine Service for five years. The incidence of cancer and mortality during hospitalization, and at one and three years after admission were calculated in both LS and ES groups and compared. RESULTS Of the 245 patients with VTE, 59 (24.1%) had uVTE 35 (59.3%) were submitted to LS and 24 (40.7%) to ES, with 10 (4.1%) diagnosis of cancer. In the following three years, 10 more patients were diagnosed. There were no statistically significant differences in inpatient diagnosis rates (8.6% vs. 4.2%; p=0.51) or in-hospital mortality (2.9% vs. 4.2%; p=0.79) or mortality at one year (8.6% vs. 8.3%; p=0.97) and three years (20.0% vs. 20.8%; p = 0.94) between LS and ES groups respectively. The Computerized Registry of Patients with Venous Thromboembolism (RIETE) score was equal or superior to 3 in 69.5% (N=41) of the population with uVTE. DISCUSSION The results of our study are consistent with the literature; there are no differences between screenings, as the difference in the number of diagnoses does not reflect on mortality. CONCLUSION There were no statistically significant differences between the two types of screening in this population. We suggest a protocol that includes the RIETE score to better select the patients who might benefit the most from an ES. However, due to its several drawbacks as external valve collapse, bossae formation, and alar retraction, a technique, known as the Turn-in flap, has been developed to overcome these complications and to provide better aesthetic and functional nasal tip outcomes. Therefore, we conducted this investigation to determine the long-term outcomes of such procedure. Methods During the period from 2007 to 2017, the charts of 120 patients who underwent the Turn-in flap procedure at King Saud University have been reviewed. The study included 42 males and 78 females with a mean age of 23 years. The follow-up duration ranged from one to 10 years with a mean duration of two years. Results The majority (30%) of our patients underwent Turn-in flap procedure due to combined lower lateral cartilage (LLC) convexity and bulbous tip. Satisfactory results have been observed in most cases with no post-operative complications. Only six cases required revision surgery. Conclusions The Turn-in folding of the cephalic part of lateral crus does not only provide functional support to the nose, but it also provides aesthetic improvement of the nasal tip with long-term satisfactory outcomes. We hypothesize that renal replacement therapy (RRT) improves survival in cardiogenic shock supported by Impella-CP (Abiomed, Danvers, MA) complicated by AKI. METHODS A retrospective chart review identified 34 patients on Impella-CP for cardiogenic shock between January 2015 and December 2017. AKI was defined as an increase in serum creatinine≥0.3 mg/dL from baseline. Three groups were analyzed AKI plus RRT, AKI minus RRT, and no AKI. Pre-existing dialysis patients were excluded. The only indication for RRT was AKI not responding to diuretics. Thirty-day mortality was similar between no AKI and AKI plus RRT groups [30.8% (4/13) vs.22.2% (2/9), p=0.48; relative risk [RR] 2.25 (95% confidence interval [CI] 0.22-22.1)]. Thirty-day mortality was higher in AKI minus RRT group compared to the no AKI group [75.0% (9/12) vs. 30.8% (4/13); p=0.03; RR 6.75 (95% CI 1.16-39.2)]. CONCLUSION In cardiogenic shock patients on Impella-CP, AKI minus RRT is associated with a higher 30-day mortality compared to patients without AKI and/or patients with AKI plus RRT. Of the 64 participants that took part, 46 participants were classified as public sector participants and 18 as industry participants. Participants indicated that they predominantly (80%) rely on subjective comparisons when comparing AEs between treatment groups. Thirty-eight per cent were aware of specialist methods for AE analysis, but only 13% had undertaken such analyses. All participants believed guidance on appropriate AE analysis and 97% thought training specifically for AE analysis is needed. These were both endorsed as solutions by workshop participants. Conclusions This research supports our earlier work that identified suboptimal AE analysis practices in RCTs and confirms the underuse of more sophisticated AE analysis approaches. Improvements are needed, and further research in this area is required to identify appropriate statistical methods. This research provides a unanimous call for the development of guidance, as well as training on suitable methods for AE analysis to support change.Objective The usage of arterial spin labelling (ASL) perfusion has exponentially increased due to improved and faster acquisition time and ease of postprocessing. We aimed to report potential additional findings obtained by adding ASL to routine unenhanced brain MRI for patients being scanned in a hospital setting for various neurological indications. Design Retrospective. Setting Large tertiary hospital. Participants 676 patients. Primary outcome Additional findings from ASL sequence compared with conventional MRI. Results Our patient cohorts consisted of 676 patients with 257 with acute infarcts and 419 without an infarct. Additional findings from ASL were observed in 13.9% (94/676) of patients. In the non-infarct group, additional findings from ASL were observed in 7.4% (31/419) of patients, whereas in patients with an acute infarct, supplemental information was obtained in 24.5% (63/257) of patients. Conclusion The addition of an ASL sequence to routine brain MRI in a hospital setting provides additional findings compared with conventional brain MRI in about 7.4% of patients with additional supplementary information in 24.5% of patients with acute infarct.Objectives As a common form of sedentary behaviour, television viewing is associated with an increase in body mass index (BMI) as well as overall cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk. A second aim was to determine the number of hours (ie, cut-point) of daily television viewing that conferred a higher BMI and CVD risk for a large population-based sample of adults. Design Population-based, cross-sectional study. Setting UK Biobank recruited across 35 centres in the UK between 2006 and 2010. Primary outcome CVD risk, as measured by the 30-year Framingham risk score. Results Linear regression models indicated that every additional hour of television viewing per day was associated with a 3% increase in CVD risk (aCoeff=0.03, d=0.16, p less then 0.0001); the interaction between television viewing with meeting PA guidelines was marginally associated with CVD risk (aCoeff=0.0010, d=0.01, p=0.014). Each additional hour of television viewing per day was associated with a 0.54 increase in BMI (aCoeff=0.54, d=0.13, p less then 0.0001); the interaction between television viewing with meeting PA guidelines was not significantly associated with BMI. Regression tree models of the study outcomes revealed that 2.5 hours of television viewing was associated with pronounced increases in BMI and CVD risk. Of the 64 participants that took part, 46 participants were classified as public sector participants and 18 as industry participants. Participants indicated that they predominantly (80%) rely on subjective comparisons when comparing AEs between treatment groups. Thirty-eight per cent were aware of specialist methods for AE analysis, but only 13% had undertaken such analyses. All participants believed guidance on appropriate AE analysis and 97% thought training specifically for AE analysis is needed. These were both endorsed as solutions by workshop participants. Conclusions This research supports our earlier work that identified suboptimal AE analysis practices in RCTs and confirms the underuse of more sophisticated AE analysis approaches. Improvements are needed, and further research in this area is required to identify appropriate statistical methods. This research provides a unanimous call for the development of guidance, as well as training on suitable methods for AE analysis to support change.Objective The usage of arterial spin labelling (ASL) perfusion has exponentially increased due to improved and faster acquisition time and ease of postprocessing. We aimed to report potential additional findings obtained by adding ASL to routine unenhanced brain MRI for patients being scanned in a hospital setting for various neurological indications. Design Retrospective. Setting Large tertiary hospital. Participants 676 patients. Primary outcome Additional findings from ASL sequence compared with conventional MRI. Results Our patient cohorts consisted of 676 patients with 257 with acute infarcts and 419 without an infarct. Additional findings from ASL were observed in 13.9% (94/676) of patients. In the non-infarct group, additional findings from ASL were observed in 7.4% (31/419) of patients, whereas in patients with an acute infarct, supplemental information was obtained in 24.5% (63/257) of patients. S. aureus and LA-MRSA CC398 carriage was quantified by means of culture, and the composition of the bacterial communities was investigated through sequencing of the 16S rRNA gene. Pig farm workers often carried LA-MRSA CC398 and other bacteria from the pig farm environment, both at work and at home, although at lower levels at home. In contrast, short-term visitors were subject to a less dramatic and rapidly reversible change in the nasal bacterial community composition. These results suggest that pig farm workers may be an important source of LA-MRSA CC398 and perhaps other pathogens of human and veterinary relevance.BACKGROUND A global epidemic of obesity has been documented, particularly among African countries. While central obesity and overweight have been reported for many countries, very limited information exists about the prevalence of these health problems in Sudan, and these data are nonexistent for Eastern Sudan. The present study aimed to determine the prevalence of obesity and central obesity, as well as the factors associated with both, among adults in Gadarif, Eastern Sudan. METHODS A cross-sectional study was conducted in Gadarif, Eastern Sudan, during the period of January through May 2018. Sociodemographic and health characteristics data were collected through a questionnaire. Body mass index (BMI) and waist circumference (WC) were measured using the standard methods. Both descriptive and inferential statics were applied to analyze the data. RESULTS A total of 594 adults participated in the study; 70.4% of them were female. The mean (standard deviation) age was 44.98 (16.64) years. Of the 594 enrolled participants, 33.7%, 7.4%, 26.8%, and 32.2% were normal weight, underweight, overweight, and obese, respectively. The prevalence of central obesity was (67.8%). Approximately, one-third of the participants (29.29%) were obese and had central obesity. In the multinomial regression, being married was the main risk factor associated with overweight, and older age, female sex, being married and hypertension were significantly associated with obesity. In the binary regression, the main risk factors associated with central obesity were female sex and being married. CONCLUSION The prevalence rates of both obesity and central obesity among the study participants were high. Older age and hypertension were only associated with obesity. Obesity and central obesity were significantly associated with female sex and being married. This study provided valuable baseline information to develop appropriate strategies for the prevention and control of obesity in Eastern Sudan.BACKGROUND Gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) is a common condition, often associated with high maternal and fetal morbidity. Crude and adjusted odds ratios (OR) for GDM were 13.4 (95%CI 2.9-61.1) and 8.9 (95%CI 1.9-42.2), respectively. A similar result was obtained among pre-gravid non-obese women, with crude and adjusted OR of 16.6 (95%CI 1.9-142.6) and 14.4 (95%CI 1.7-125.7), respectively. Among pre-gravid obese patients, a 45mm threshold did not reach statistical significance to predict GDM. CONCLUSION The high and significant OR found before and after adjustments provides additional evidence of a strong association between VAT and GDM. It appears that VAT measurement during the first half of pregnancy has great potential in identifying non-obese women at high risk for GDM. Herein, we conduct a computational modeling and thermodynamic characterization of stapled p53/HDM2 complex via molecular docking, simulations, and binding free energy analysis. The binding thermodynamics analysis is done based on the end-point calculation of the effective binding energy-a sum of the direct peptide-protein interaction energy and the dehydration penalty-and on its decomposition into contributions from specific groups constituting the complex. This allows us to investigate how individual amino acids in the stapled p53 and HDM2 contribute to the binding affinity. We find that not only the epitope residues (F19, W23 and L26), but also the hydrocarbon linker of the stapled p53 impart significant contributions. Our computational approach will be useful in designing new stapled peptides in which the staple location is also optimized to improve the binding affinity.One of the defining characteristics of the B cell receptor (BCR) is the extensive diversity in the repertoire of immunoglobulin genes that make up the BCR, resulting in broad range of specificity. Gammaherpesviruses are B lymphotropic viruses that establish life-long infection in B cells, and although the B cell receptor plays a central role in B cell biology, very little is known about the immunoglobulin repertoire of gammaherpesvirus infected cells. To begin to characterize the Ig genes expressed by murine gammaherpesvirus 68 (MHV68) infected cells, we utilized single cell sorting to sequence and clone the Ig variable regions of infected germinal center (GC) B cells and plasma cells. We show that MHV68 infection is biased towards cells that express the Igλ light chain along with a single heavy chain variable gene, IGHV10-1*01. This population arises through clonal expansion but is not viral antigen specific. Furthermore, we show that class-switching in MHV68 infected cells differs from that of uninfected cells.

Metaphoric language is one of the most common expressions of creative cognition in everyday life. However, the cognitive mechanisms underlying metaphor generation remain largely unexplained. In this study, we aimed to investigate the relationship between various cognitive functions and both novel and conventional metaphor generation. Ninety-five undergraduate students were administered a metaphor generation task that assesses novel and conventional metaphor generation, along with a battery of different cognitive measures vocabulary; divergent thinking (Tel Aviv Creativity Test), working memory (WM) via digit span tests, executive functions (EFs) using the Behavioral Rating Inventory of Executive Function (BRIEF) questionnaire, and selective attention (lateralized global-local digit task). Results of a path analysis indicated that - whereas only selective attention contributed to conventional metaphor generation - selective attention, divergent thinking, and EFs contributed to novel metaphor generation beyond vocabulary and WM. Thus, the results indicate that although both novel and conventional metaphor generation are linked to attentional resources and inhibitory control, the greater creativity inherent in novel metaphor generation appears to reflect a more complex set of cognitive processes than conventional metaphor generation. Blindsight is the ability of patients with primary visual cortex (V1) damage to process information in their clinically blind visual field in the absence of conscious awareness. In addition to those with localized V1 lesions, some patients exhibiting this phenomenon have had a cerebral hemisphere removed or disconnected from the rest of the brain for the treatment of drug-resistant epilepsy (hemispherectomy). Research into the underlying neural substrates of blindsight has long implicated the intact visual cortex in maintaining residual vision and supporting visuo-guided responses to stimuli presented ipsilaterally within the blind visual field while operating outside the geniculo-striate pathway. A recent study demonstrated functional reorganization in the dorsal visual areas of the intact hemisphere, thereby supporting its compensatory role in non-conscious vision. In this study, we used cortical thickness analysis to examine anatomical differences in the visual cortex of the intact hemisphere of three subjects with varying degrees of cortical damage and well documented blindsight two with a right hemispherectomy (complete and partial), and one with a left V1 lesion. T1-weighted MRI data were obtained for the subjects while control data were chosen from publicly available NKI-dataset to match closely the acquisition parameters of our blindsight cases. Our results show significant increases in cortical thickness in the visual cortex of all blindsight subjects compared to healthy controls, irrespective of age-onset, etiology, and extent of the damage. Our findings add to accumulating evidence from behavioral, functional imaging, and tractography studies of cerebral compensation and reorganization. When we make decisions, we usually consider the context. This can sometimes lead to suboptimal choices or choice abnormalities. One such abnormality is the compromise effect, according to which deciders tend to favour options positioned as a compromise in an available set of extreme options. Theoretical accounts consider that these effects relate to available cognitive resources, which, in turn, have been found to depend on an individual's dopaminergic innervation. Referring to a correlative triad between cognition, dopamine and aging, the present study demonstrates that the compromise effect is replicable in a group of younger adults (n = 27, 20-32 years of age) yet is attenuated in older adults (n = 27, 62-80 years of age). Results from an [18F]-FDOPA-PET analysis in older adults indicate a positive association between older adults' inclination to engage in compromise effects and their striatal dopamine synthesis capacity. These results demonstrate altered context-dependent decision biases in older adults and suggest a neuromodulatory mechanism underlying this irrational choice. OBJECTIVE We aimed to 1) study clinical recovery and functional outcome over 24 months after severe childhood TBI, 2) identify early sociodemographic and severity factors influencing outcome, and 3) examine the clinical utility of the Pediatric Injury Functional Outcome Scale (PIFOS) to assess functional outcome. METHODS Children (0-15 years) consecutively admitted in a trauma centre after accidental severe TBI over 3 years were included in a prospective longitudinal study (Traumatisme Grave de l'Enfant cohort). Metaphoric language is one of the most common expressions of creative cognition in everyday life. However, the cognitive mechanisms underlying metaphor generation remain largely unexplained. In this study, we aimed to investigate the relationship between various cognitive functions and both novel and conventional metaphor generation. Ninety-five undergraduate students were administered a metaphor generation task that assesses novel and conventional metaphor generation, along with a battery of different cognitive measures vocabulary; divergent thinking (Tel Aviv Creativity Test), working memory (WM) via digit span tests, executive functions (EFs) using the Behavioral Rating Inventory of Executive Function (BRIEF) questionnaire, and selective attention (lateralized global-local digit task). Results of a path analysis indicated that - whereas only selective attention contributed to conventional metaphor generation - selective attention, divergent thinking, and EFs contributed to novel metaphor generation beyond vocabulary and WM. Thus, the results indicate that although both novel and conventional metaphor generation are linked to attentional resources and inhibitory control, the greater creativity inherent in novel metaphor generation appears to reflect a more complex set of cognitive processes than conventional metaphor generation. Blindsight is the ability of patients with primary visual cortex (V1) damage to process information in their clinically blind visual field in the absence of conscious awareness. In addition to those with localized V1 lesions, some patients exhibiting this phenomenon have had a cerebral hemisphere removed or disconnected from the rest of the brain for the treatment of drug-resistant epilepsy (hemispherectomy). Research into the underlying neural substrates of blindsight has long implicated the intact visual cortex in maintaining residual vision and supporting visuo-guided responses to stimuli presented ipsilaterally within the blind visual field while operating outside the geniculo-striate pathway. A recent study demonstrated functional reorganization in the dorsal visual areas of the intact hemisphere, thereby supporting its compensatory role in non-conscious vision. In this study, we used cortical thickness analysis to examine anatomical differences in the visual cortex of the intact hemisphere of three subjects with varying degrees of cortical damage and well documented blindsight two with a right hemispherectomy (complete and partial), and one with a left V1 lesion. T1-weighted MRI data were obtained for the subjects while control data were chosen from publicly available NKI-dataset to match closely the acquisition parameters of our blindsight cases. Our results show significant increases in cortical thickness in the visual cortex of all blindsight subjects compared to healthy controls, irrespective of age-onset, etiology, and extent of the damage. Our findings add to accumulating evidence from behavioral, functional imaging, and tractography studies of cerebral compensation and reorganization. When we make decisions, we usually consider the context. This can sometimes lead to suboptimal choices or choice abnormalities. One such abnormality is the compromise effect, according to which deciders tend to favour options positioned as a compromise in an available set of extreme options. RESULTS Histological and ultrastructural studies revealed several notable features in different developmental stages. First, a thickened cell wall with papillae-like structures appeared during fungal penetration in the suspensor end cell, epidermal cells and cortical cells of germinating embryos. In addition, the formation of two distinctive cell types in the colonized region of a protocorm (i.e., the passage canal cell filled with actively growing fungal hyphae) can be observed in the epidermal cell, and the distinctive digestion cell with a dense cytoplasm appears in the cortex. Finally, within the digestion cell, numerous electron-dense tubules form a radial system and attach to degrading fungal hyphae. The fungal hyphae appear to be digested through endocytosis. CONCLUSIONS The present study provides important structural evidence for the phytophagous type of orchid mycorrhiza in the symbiotic germination of G. elata with Mycena. This case demonstrates a particular nutrient transfer network between G. elata and its litter-decaying fungal partner.The fruit fly's natural visual environment is often characterized by light intensities ranging across several orders of magnitude and by rapidly varying contrast across space and time. Fruit fly photoreceptors robustly transduce and, in conjunction with amacrine cells, process visual scenes and provide the resulting signal to downstream targets. Here, we model the first step of visual processing in the photoreceptor-amacrine cell layer. We propose a novel divisive normalization processor (DNP) for modeling the computation taking place in the photoreceptor-amacrine cell layer. The DNP explicitly models the photoreceptor feedforward and temporal feedback processing paths and the spatio-temporal feedback path of the amacrine cells. We then formally characterize the contrast gain control of the DNP and provide sparse identification algorithms that can efficiently identify each the feedforward and feedback DNP components. The algorithms presented here are the first demonstration of tractable and robust identification of the components of a divisive normalization processor.

As compared to enzymes in their pristine form, immobilized enzymes, with unique catalytic, stability, selectivity, and reusability profile, are of supreme and strategic interest in environmental biotechnology. Herein, an effort has been made to signify the novel bio-catalytic and bio-degradation potentialities of various oxidoreductases, including laccases, and peroxidases including soybean peroxidase, versatile manganese peroxidase, and horseradish peroxidase with suitable examples. Following a brief introduction, the focus is given to the presence of TCS in the key atmosphere compartments. Potential sources, acquaintance, and hazardous influence of TCS are also discussed with recent and relevant examples. The second half shows the TCS removal/degradation potentialities of soluble enzyme-based catalytic systems and immobilized-enzyme-based catalytic systems. Finally, the concluding remarks, along with possible future directions are given in this significant research arena.Global hydrological models facilitate studying of water resources and their variations over time. The accuracies of these models are enhanced when combined with ever-increasing satellite remotely sensed data. Traditionally, these combinations are done via data assimilation approach, which permits the use of improved hydrological outputs to study regions with limited in-situ measurements such as the Nile Basin. This study aims at using the state-of-art satellite radar altimetry data to enhance a land-based hydrological model for studying water storage changes over the Nile Basin. Altimetry-derived surface water storage, for the first time, is assimilated into the model using the ensemble Kalman filter (EnKF) for the period of 2003 to 2016. Multiple datasets from ground measurements, as well as space observations, are used to evaluate the performance of the assimilated satellite altimetry data. Results indicate that the assimilation successfully improves model outputs, especially the surface water component. The process increases the correlation between surface water storage changes and water level variations from satellite radar altimetry by 0.44 and reduces the surface water discharge root-mean-square errors (RMSE) by approximately 33%.Background Ectopic pregnancy is one of the most important causes of maternal deaths and fallopian tubes are the location of 95% of ectopic pregnancies. Results This study highlights a paradox between the social principle of prevention and the discourse elements on mammography screening present in the mainstream press. Conclusion The general French press does not take into account radiation protection in cancer screening discourses. Biological odor treatment methods have broader applications than the physical and chemical counterparts as they are environment-friendly, cost-effective and generate low secondary wastes. The aqueous activated sludge (AS) processes are among the most promising approaches for the prevention or end-of-pipe removal of odor emissions and have the potential to simultaneously treat odor and wastewater. However, AS deodorization biotechnologies in WWTPs still need to be further systematically summarized and categorized while in-depth discussions on the characteristics and underlying mechanisms of AS deodorization process are still lacking. Recently, considerable studies have been reported to elucidate the microbial metabolisms in odor control and wastewater treatment. This paper reviews the fundamentals, characteristics, advances and field experiences of three AS biotechnologies for odor treatment in WWTPs, i.e., AS recycling, microaeration in AS digester and AS diffusion. The underlying deodorization mechanisms of typical odors have been revealed through the summary of recent advances on multi-element conversions, metabolic interactions of bacteria, microscopic characterization and identification of functional microorganisms. Future research aspects to advance the emerging deodorization AS process, such as deodorization mechanisms, simultaneous odor and water treatment, synergistic treatment with other air emissions, are discussed.

A greater effort to provide information on this subject is needed.Odors from wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) have attracted extensive attention and stringent environmental standards are more widely adopted to reduce odor emissions. Biological odor treatment methods have broader applications than the physical and chemical counterparts as they are environment-friendly, cost-effective and generate low secondary wastes. The aqueous activated sludge (AS) processes are among the most promising approaches for the prevention or end-of-pipe removal of odor emissions and have the potential to simultaneously treat odor and wastewater. However, AS deodorization biotechnologies in WWTPs still need to be further systematically summarized and categorized while in-depth discussions on the characteristics and underlying mechanisms of AS deodorization process are still lacking. Recently, considerable studies have been reported to elucidate the microbial metabolisms in odor control and wastewater treatment. This paper reviews the fundamentals, characteristics, advances and field experiences of three AS biotechnologies for odor treatment in WWTPs, i.e., AS recycling, microaeration in AS digester and AS diffusion. The underlying deodorization mechanisms of typical odors have been revealed through the summary of recent advances on multi-element conversions, metabolic interactions of bacteria, microscopic characterization and identification of functional microorganisms. Despite a number of previous projects aimed at assessing, from a multidisciplinary point of view, the feasibility of multipurpose platforms, it is here shown that the state-of-the-art has focused mainly on single-purpose devices, and adopting a single discipline (either economic, or social, or technological, or environmental) approach. Therefore, the aim of the present study is to provide a multidisciplinary state of the art review on, whenever possible, multi-purpose platforms, complementing it with single-purpose and/or single discipline literature reviews when not possible. Synoptic tables are provided, giving an overview of the multi-purpose platform concepts investigated, the numerical approaches adopted, and a comprehensive snapshot classifying the references discussed by industry (offshore renewables, aquaculture, both) and by aspect (technological, environmental, socio-economic). The majority of the multi-purpose platform concepts proposed are integrating only multiple offshore renewable energy devices (e.g. hybrid wind-wave), with only few integrating also aquaculture systems. AOD500 exhibits higher values in May (~0.07) and lower in winter (~0.03), while AE400-870 minimizes in spring, indicating influence by coarse-mode dust aerosols, either emitted regionally or long-range transported. The de-convolution of AOD500 into fine and coarse modes justifies the aerosol seasonality and sources, while the marginal diurnal variation in all aerosol properties reveals a weak influence from local sources, except for some few aerosol episodes. The aerosol-volume size distribution presents a mode value at ~10 μm with secondary peaks at accumulation (~ 2 μm) and fine modes (~0.03 μm) and low variability between the seasons. A classification of the aerosol types based on the fine-mode fraction (FMF) vs. SSA500 relationship reveals the dominance of aerosols in the FMF range of 0.4-0.6, characterized as mixed (39%), followed by fine aerosols with high scattering efficiency (26%), while particles related to dust contribute ~21%, with low fractions of fine-absorbing aerosols (~13%). The aerosol radiative forcing (ARF) estimates reveal a small cooling effect at the top of the atmosphere (-1.3 Wm-2), while at the surface, the ARF ranges from -2 Wm-2 to -6 Wm-2 on monthly basis. The monthly-mean atmospheric radiative forcing (~1 to 4 Wm-2) leads to heating rates of 0.04 to 0.13 K day-1. These ARF values are higher than the global averages and may cause climate implications over the trans-Himalayan region.

Colibactin-producing E. coli (CoPEC) are frequently detected in colorectal cancer (CRC) and exhibit procarcinogenic properties. Because increasing evidence show the role of immune environment and especially of antitumor T-cells in CRC development, we investigated the impact of CoPEC on these cells in human CRC and in the APCMin/+ **** colon. T-cell density was evaluated by immunohistochemistry in human tumors known for their CoPEC status. APCmin/+ **** were chronically infected with a CoPEC strain (11G5). Immune cells (neutrophils and T-cell populations) were then quantified by immunofluorescent staining of the colon. The quantification of lymphoid populations was also performed in the mesenteric lymph nodes (MLNs). Here, we show that the colonization of CRC patients by CoPEC is associated with a decrease of tumor-infiltrating T lymphocytes (CD3+ T-cells). Similarly, we demonstrated, in ****, that CoPEC chronic infection decreases CD3+ and CD8+ T-cells and increases colonic inflammation. In addition, we noticed a significant decrease in antitumor T-cells in the MLNs of CoPEC-infected **** compared to that of controls. Moreover, we show that CoPEC infection decreases the antimouse PD-1 immunotherapy efficacy in MC38 tumor model. Our findings suggest that CoPEC could promote a procarcinogenic immune environment through impairment of antitumor T-cell response, leading to tumoral resistance to immunotherapy. Chemoprevention options are limited, and few interventions have been shown to reduce cancer risk or mortality. Emerging data support the model that fallopian tubes are the site of origin for a proportion of high-grade serous cancers. This implies that a subset of cancers may be prevented by removing the fallopian tubes while leaving the ovaries intact. Accordingly, there has been shift in clinical practice for average risk women; some now recommend removal of both the fallopian tubes only instead of tubal ligation for sterilization or at the time of benign gynecologic surgery. This has been termed opportunistic salpingectomy and represents a means of decreasing the burden of ovarian cancer by preventing cancers that arise in the fallopian tubes. There have been no detailed, prospective reports that have estimated ovarian cancer risk reduction with opportunistic salpingectomy, neither among women at baseline population risk nor among women at a high risk of developing the disease. The situation is complicated for women with a **** mutation-bilateral salpingo-oophorectomy is a proven means of risk reduction and salpingectomy alone is not the standard of care. In 2007-2008, regulatory notifications advised of venous thromboembolism and mortality risks while the Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services' restricted ESA initiation to patients with hemoglobin less then 10 g/dl. In 2010, a Risk Evaluation and Mitigation Strategies required consent prior to administration. We evaluated ESA utilization from 2003 to 2012 and obtained private health insurer claims data for persons with lung, colorectal, or breast cancer from 2001 to 2012. ESA use for CIA was determined by an ESA claim after chemotherapy, up to 6 months after treatment. We identified 839,948 commercially insured patients, including 24,785 patients with ESA-treated CIA (3.2%). Darbepoetin use increased 3.9-fold from 2003 to 2007 (12.3% to 48.7%) and then decreased 95% to 2.6% by 2012. Epoetin use decreased 90% from 2003 to 2012 (30.3% to 3.1%). Between 2003 and 2012, mean epoetin dosing decreased 0.8-fold (244,979 in 2003 vs. 196,216 units in 2012), but increased 1.8-fold for darbepoetin-treated CIA (262 in 2003 to 467 μg in 2012). Among CIA patients, transfusions were low (4.5%) in 2002-2007, then increased 2.2-fold between 2008 and 2012. Safety initiatives between 2007 and 2010 facilitated reductions in ESA use combined with changes in coverage. These data show the efficacy of regulatory efforts, publication of adverse events and changes in reimbursement in reducing use of ESAs. Peri-articular infiltration analgesia is a novel, less invasive technique, but evidence surrounding its use is unclear. This systematic review and meta-analysis aims to evaluate the utility of peri-articular infiltration analgesia in shoulder surgery. We searched literature for trials comparing peri-articular infiltration analgesia with control or with interscalene brachial plexus block. Control groups received no intervention, placebo or systemic opioids. The primary outcome was cumulative oral morphine equivalent consumption during the first 24 h postoperatively. Secondary outcomes included rest pain scores up to 48 h; risk of side-effects; and durations of post-anaesthetic care unit and hospital stay. Data were pooled with random-effects modelling. Seven trials (383 patients) were included. Compared with control, peri-articular infiltration analgesia reduced 24-h oral morphine consumption by a mean difference (95%CI) of -38.0 mg (-65.5 to -10.5; p = 0.007). It also improved pain scores up to 6 h, 36 h and 48 h, with the greatest improvement observed at 0 h (-2.4 (-2.7 to -1.6); p less then 0.001). Peri-articular infiltration analgesia decreased postoperative nausea and vomiting by an odds ratio (95%CI) of 0.3 (0.1-0.7; p = 0.006). In contrast, peri-articular infiltration analgesia was not different from interscalene brachial plexus block for analgesic consumption, pain scores or side-effects.
