  • For different forms of skin pigmentation and skin types, different lasers are used.
  • In the treatment of pigmentation, UV protection/sunscreen is essential.
  • Laser therapy on olive or darker skin should be used with caution.

What is Skin Pigmentation?

Excessive skin pigmentation is caused by aberrant melanin synthesis and deposition by melanocytes. Melanocytes are cells that produce pigment. Our skin color is determined by the number of melanocytes present in our skin. Melanin production is based on UV or sun exposure and is a natural skin protection mechanism.

Excess melanin synthesis and deposition cause hyperpigmentation (areas of the skin that are darker than the rest of the skin). Skin pigmentation loss is referred to as hypopigmentation.

This blog will go over skin pigmentation and how to treat it. It will only cover pigmentation in the skin and will not include elevated pigmented lesions, moles, or skin malignancies.

What Causes Pigmentation?

Excessive skin pigmentation, also known as hyperpigmentation, is typically caused by an overabundance of melanin. This causes an increase in melanin synthesis and clumping, as well as the appearance of brown or deeper pigmentation patches on the skin.
