When the retina, or the thin layer of tissue present at the back of the eye, moves away from its normal position as the vitreous (thick transparent liquid between the retina and an eye lens) sticks to the retina, pulls it hard, and tears it, it is called cause of retinal detachment or Detached Retina.

The blood vessels that provide oxygen and nourishment to the eye get separated.

As a result of this separation, the vision becomes blurred, and if not treated on time, there could be a permanent loss of eyesight.

Warning signs and symptoms of Retinal Detachment or Detached Retina

When the retina moves from its place, it causes different types of problems.

At times the person experiences various retinal detachment symptoms. Some warning signs of retinal detachment or detached retina are:

• Blurred vision
• Complete/Partial loss of vision in one eye or both eyes
• Unable to see in dim light
• Seeing flashes of light
• Seeing spots or floaters
• Increased sensitivity to light
• Gradually reduced side vision or shadow in side vision
• Seeing Gray curtain

Causes of Retinal Detachment or Detached Retina

There are different causes of retina detachment and risk factors for different types of detached retina or retinal detachments. The retina can detach from the eye due to the following:

• Ageing
• Family history of retinal detachment
• Previous retinal detachment in one eye
• Eye surgery, like a cataract removal
• Serious eye injury
• Other eye diseases that have affected the eyes in the past
• Eye disorders in the past including thinning of the retina (Uveitis), splitting of the retina into two parts (Retinoschisis)
• Nearsightedness
