Germany Hydrogen Fuel Cell Vehicle Infrastructure: Building the Backbone of H2 Mobility
According to recent analysis from Market Research Future, the Germany hydrogen fuel cell vehicle market is projected to grow from USD 263.16 million in 2025 to USD 1,316.7 million by 2035, at a CAGR of 17.66% . This growth is inseparable from the expansion of Germany hydrogen fuel cell vehicle infrastructure, a critical enabler for widespread adoption of hydrogen mobility.
Germany is making substantial investments in hydrogen infrastructure to support the commercial deployment of fuel cell vehicles. The country has allocated €10 billion in recent years for hydrogen technology development, targeting 10 GW of electrolyzer capacity by 2030 . As of early 2026, approximately 120 hydrogen refueling stations are operational nationwide, with the network continuing to expand . The German government's KSNI funding program provides up to 80% support for hydrogen refueling station development, with a total of €2.2 billion allocated from 2023 to 2026 for climate-friendly vehicle deployment .
Research infrastructure is also advancing rapidly. The DLR BALIS test center in Empfingen, funded with €26 million, enables development and testing of megawatt-class fuel cell propulsion systems for applications such as ship propulsion and aviation . A new research platform at TU Braunschweig, supported by €4.3 million in funding, will test fuel cell drives with outputs from 5 to 200 kilowatts, a capability unique among university facilities in northern Germany .
The refueling technology is also evolving. Daimler Truck has developed sLH2 (subcooled liquid hydrogen) technology with partner Linde, allowing full refueling of heavy trucks in 10-15 minutes . This technology is being deployed in the NextGenH2 small series production, with 100 trucks to be built by the end of 2026 . As the Germany hydrogen fuel cell vehicle market continues to expand, this infrastructure development will be critical for enabling hydrogen-powered commercial transport.
