A generator's kW rating indicates the amount of real electrical energy available to perform useful work. This includes operating lighting systems, industrial machinery, pumps, production equipment, and other electrical loads.
The kVA rating, however, represents the total electrical capacity delivered by the generator. Since many industrial loads are inductive, some energy is used to establish magnetic fields rather than performing actual work.
