Syringes and Needles

Syringes and needles are among the most basic and widely used blood collection devices. Syringes have a barrel and plunger to draw and discharge fluids. They come in various sizes depending on the amount of blood needed. Needles have a hollow shaft and a sharp tip to puncture the skin and blood vessels. Needles are also available in different sizes and styles like straight needle, winged needle, or butterfly needle. Syringes along with the appropriate size needle are used by phlebotomists, doctors, and nurses to collect blood samples from veins or draw medication into veins.

Blood Collection Tubes

Blood collection tubes are glass or plastic tubes used to collect and store different types of Blood Collection Devices samples. They have colour-coded seals and additives inside to preserve the collected blood depending on the test requirement. Common blood collection tube types include plain tubes for whole blood tests, tubes containing additives like EDTA or citrate for complete blood count and coagulation tests, serum tubes for biochemical tests, urine collection cups, and specialized tubes used for drug or toxicology screening. Blood collection tubes make sample collection easy and help preserve the blood analytes until testing.

Blood Bags

Blood bags are plastic bags used for collection, storage, and transfusion of blood and blood components. They are made of PVC material graded for medical use. Blood collected from donors during donation is stored in these bags along with preservatives like CPD or CPDA-1. The bags have tubes attached for seamless transfer of blood during processing into components like red cells, platelets, and plasma. They also have labels to identify the donor and any transfused recipient. Blood banks use standardized blood bag systems to efficiently collect, separate, label, and issue blood products according to need.

Automated Blood Collection Systems

Latest blood collection devices also include automated blood collection systems used in large blood centers and hospitals. These systems use robotic automation with tubes, needles, and blood bags arranged on conveyor lines. They perform blood collection in a standardized, contactless process by a sequence of operations like donor identification, puncture, tube filling, sealing, and labeling as per standard protocols. This provides improved donor and staff safety, increases collection efficiency, and ensures adherence to quality. Automated systems are useful for large volume collection requirements and help free up staff for other tasks.
