ABS Module: A Key Component for Safe and Effective Braking

 Anti-lock Braking System (ABS) is considered one of the most important vehicle safety improvement since the invention of the motorcar as it allows the driver to maintain control of the vehicle during evasive and emergency braking. ABS is short for Anti-lock Braking System, a device fitted to a vehicle irrespective of its size, which is responsible for controlling ABS function (also known as Electronic Braking System). The ABs module makes sure that the wheels brake without locking up when the brakes are suddenly applied, e.g. during an evasive manoeuvre to avoid an accident, therefore preventing a skid that would otherwise cause a loss of steering control by the driver (otherwise known as a spin or spinout). What is the ABS Module?

 

 The ABS module is the electronic control unit, which is the brain of this anti-lock braking system.  Wheel Speed Monitoring: A speed sensor is present at each wheel. Using these, the ABS module is constantly monitoring the rate of rotation of each wheel.

 

 Lock-up detection: If the wheel starts to slow more than the others, the ABS module knows that the wheel is about to lock up (to lock up means the wheel stops rotating while you’re still moving, and you lose control of the car).

 

 Modulate Brake Pressure: The ABS module temporarily releases brake pressure to the locking wheel to help the wheel to regain traction, by quickly pulsing on, then off the brakes, several times per second. 

 

 Control is restored: thanks to the ABS module’s adjustment of brake pressure, the wheel can continue to turn, and the driver can continue to steer the car’s trajectory, even during a sudden stop.

 

 It is so fast that the driver does not feel the ABS module working (other than when braking hard, when she feels small vibrations in the brake pedal). She can therefore make the braking more precise to just short of the point of skidding, and hence take smoother and safer stops.

Signs of a Failing ABS Module

 

 As with most other electronic modules, time can take its toll on the ABS module and eventually lead to failure. Recognising some common signs of a failing ABS module can help prevent serious issues with the vehicle’s braking system because brakes are one of the most important safety features on a car. Here are some signs to be on the lookout for if you suspect your ABS module is starting to fail.

 

 ABS warning light: If the ABS module has detected a fault, the ABS control lamp on the dash will illuminate. The lamp is an indication that the ABS doesn’t work. Have it checked immediately. It’s a warning signal.

 

 Powertrain Misfiring Acceleration: If your engine hesitates and misfires when hitting the accelerator pedal, the failure may be the cam and crank sensors, which the PCM or engine control module (ECM) relies on for real-time updates of the internal combustion cycle.
