The sensation of groove has been defined as the pleasurable desire to move to music, suggesting that both motor timing and reward processes are involved in this experience. Although many studies have investigated rhythmic timing and musical reward separately, none have examined whether the associated cortical and subcortical networks are engaged while participants listen to groove-based music. In the current study, musicians and non-musicians listened to and rated experimentally controlled groove-based stimuli while undergoing functional magnetic resonance imaging. Medium complexity rhythms elicited higher ratings of pleasure and wanting to move and were associated with activity in regions linked to beat perception and reward, as well as prefrontal and parietal regions implicated in generating and updating stimuli-based expectations. Activity in basal ganglia regions of interest, including the nucleus accumbens, caudate and putamen, was associated with ratings of pleasure and wanting to move, supporting their important role in the sensation of groove. We propose a model in which different cortico-striatal circuits interact to support the mechanisms underlying groove, including internal generation of the beat, beat-based expectations, and expectation-based affect. These results show that the sensation of groove is supported by motor and reward networks in the brain and, along with our proposed model, suggest that the basal ganglia are crucial nodes in networks that interact to generate this powerful response to music. Acetylcholinergic (ACh) neurotransmission is essential for key organismal functions such as locomotion and cognition. However, the mechanism through which ACh is regulated in the central nervous system is not fully understood. The vesicular acetylcholine transporter (VAChT) mediates the packaging and transport of ACh for exocytotic release and is a critical component of the ACh release machinery. Yet its precise role in the maintenance of cholinergic tone remains a subject of active investigation. Here we use the overexpression of VAChT as a tool to investigate the role of changes in ACh exocytosis on the regulation of synaptic activity and its downstream consequences. We measured the effect of an increase in VAChT expression on locomotion and cognitive performance as well as on organismal survival across the lifespan. We report the surprising finding that increased VAChT expression results in a significantly shorter lifespan in comparison to control flies. Moreover, constructs overexpressing VAChT demonstrate an age-dependent decrease in locomotion performance. Importantly, we report clear deficits in learning and memory which we measured through a courtship conditioning assay. Together, these data provide evidence for the adverse effects of overexpression of the vesicular acetylcholine transporter in the maintenance of normal behavioral abilities in Drosophila and demonstrates for the first time a role for ACh in the regulation of organismal survival. Recently, machine learning techniques have been leveraged to maximally exploit the information contained in MALDI-TOF M with the ultimate goal to refine species identification and streamline antimicrobial resistance determination. OBJECTIVES To systematically review and evaluate studies employing machine learning for the analysis of MALDI-TOF mass spectra. DATA SOURCES Using PubMed/Medline, Scopus, and Web of Science, we searched the existing literature for machine learning supported applications of MALDI-TOF mass spectra for microbial species and antimicrobial susceptibility identification. STUDY ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA Original research studies using machine learning to exploit MALDI-TOF mass spectra for microbial species and antimicrobial susceptibility identification were included. Effective treatment of juvenile osteoporosis, which is frequently caused by glucocorticoid (GC) therapy, has not been established due to limited data regarding the efficacy and adverse effects of antiresorptive therapies on the growing skeleton. We previously demonstrated that sialic acid-binding immunoglobulin-like lectin 15 (Siglec-15) targeting therapy, which interferes with osteoclast terminal differentiation in the secondary, but not primary, spongiosa, increased bone mass without adverse effects on skeletal growth, whereas bisphosphonate, a first-line treatment for osteoporosis, increased bone mass but impaired long bone growth in healthy growing rats. In the present study, we investigated the efficacy of anti-Siglec-15 neutralizing antibody (Ab) therapy against GC-induced osteoporosis in a growing rat model. GC decreased bone mass and deteriorated mechanical properties of bone, due to a disproportionate increase in bone resorption. Both anti-Siglec-15 Ab and alendronate (ALN) showed protective effects against GC-induced bone loss by suppressing bone resorption, which was more pronounced with anti-Siglec-15 Ab treatment, possibly due to a reduced negative impact on bone formation. ALN induced histological abnormalities in the growth plate and morphological abnormalities in the long bone metaphysis but did not cause significant growth retardation. Conversely, anti-Siglec-15 Ab did not show any negative impact on the growth plate and preserved normal osteoclast and chondroclast function at the primary spongiosa. Taken together, these results suggest that anti-Siglec-15 targeting therapy could be a safe and efficacious prophylactic therapy for GC-induced osteoporosis in juvenile patients. The role for endotyping of CRS became evident for biologics, but also turned out to be meaningful for the decision on the selection of pharmacotherapy and the specific surgical approach to choose. Furthermore, considerations on the role of surgery and biologics needed to be elaborated to develop decision-making processes for patients with moderate-to-severe CRS with nasal polyps, with or without comorbid asthma, allowing us to adjust the treatment for patient groups based on endotyping (precision medicine).

The recommendations of the Surviving Sepsis Campaign 2016 concerning catecholamine therapy clearly prefer norepinephrin as the first- choice vasopressor, the use of vasopressin as an additionally administered drug is rated more tentative. Also the Canadian guideline now, implicating recently published studies, argues for the use of vasopressin or vasopressin- analogues in addition to an existing norepinephrine therapy, even though the level of evidence remains still low and there's no simple therapeutic algorithm formulated. This is based on a lowered incidence of newly- diagnosed atrial fibrillation and decreased mortality rate while administration remains safe.BACKGROUND In recent years, ultrasound (US) has become more incorporated into anesthesia and intensive care medicine. The German Anesthesia Society established a modular curriculum to teach US skills. Until now, the efficacy of this modular curriculum has not been validated. OBJECTIVE The main objective of this study was to determine whether there is an increase of knowledge and of psychomotor skills for the trainees in this curriculum. MATERIAL AND METHODS After ethical committee approval, 41 anesthesia physicians were enrolled. To determine the increase of knowledge and of practical skills theoretical and practical tests performed were evaluated before and after two different US courses. RESULTS Comparing before and after course tests, the participants showed significant improvement in theoretical multiple choice tests (p = 0.008). Regarding psychomotor skills following course 1, the trainees improved significantly in the time needed to perform the two practical tests (p = 0.03), but not in the performance of the test. Better needle visualization during simulated US-guided vessel puncture (p = 0.52) and better identification of the anatomical structures in the axillary region (p = 0.56) could not be achieved. CONCLUSION This study shows that although this US course curriculum has positively enhanced the trainees' theoretical knowledge of US practice, it does not enhance the practical application of that theoretical knowledge. To improve this curriculum, a supervised clinically practical training should follow the course.PURPOSE To assess the natural evolution of the osseous reaction following arthroscopic double-row rotator cuff repair with PEEK anchors and to analyze its correlation with clinical shoulder function. METHODS Between 2015 and 2017, 159 patients received arthroscopic double-row rotator cuff repair with PEEK anchors and underwent serial clinical and radiological follow-up (3, 6, 12, and 24 months). Radiological results were analyzed by tendon integrity, bone marrow edema, and peri-implant osteolysis. Clinical shoulder function was evaluated with the Constant score. RESULTS One-hundred and seventeen patients were enrolled; among them, 63% demonstrated bone marrow edema around the anchors on postoperative 3-month MRI. The edema area percentage was 41% ± 7%. At 6 months, edema was only seen in 12% of cases, with an area percentage of 18% ± 5%. At 12 and 24 months, edema was rarely present. Fluid signals around the anchor were observed in 17.6%, 42.7%, 33.3%, and 21.0% of patients at 3, 6, 12, and 24 months, respectively; the tunnel widening values were 1.1 ± 0.4 mm, 1.8 ± 0.5 mm, 2.3 ± 0.6 mm, and 2.2 ± 0.7 mm at each follow-up, respectively. The sign of osteolysis was significantly more obvious around the lateral anchor than around the medial anchor. The presence of an osseous reaction was not correlated with worse clinical outcome. CONCLUSION Osseous reactions following arthroscopic rotator cuff repair are common and significant even with PEEK anchors. METHODS A systematic search of the MEDLINE, EMBASE, and Cochrane Library databases was performed for studies evaluating the relationship between the incidence of HPs and FAI-related morphologies published up to August 16, 2019. Subgroup analyses were also performed to determine the differences in the relationship between the presence/absence of hip symptoms and cam-/pincer-type FAI. RESULTS Seven studies involving 7950 hips were included. The pooled odds ratio (OR) for the incidence of HPs in the presence of an FAI-related morphology was 1.64 (95% confidence interval [CI] = 1.09-2.46; P = 0.02). In the subgroup analyses, the ORs for the incidence of HPs in the symptomatic and asymptomatic hips were 1.00 (95% CI 0.40-2.51; P = 1.00) and 1.59 (95% CI 1.42-1.77; P less then 0.0001), respectively; the ORs for the incidence of HPs in the cam- and pincer-type FAI were 1.61 (95% CI 1.43-1.81; P less then 0.0001) and 1.42 (95% CI 0.77-2.61; P = n.s.), respectively. CONCLUSIONS The incidence of HPs has a significant relationship with FAI-related morphology, especially in asymptomatic patients and those with cam-type FAI morphology. METHODS Two cohorts of 50 patients who underwent primary TKA were first preoperatively matched by sex, deformity, body mass index (BMI), Oxford Knee Score (OKS), Knee society score (KSS) and range of motion (ROM) and then statistically analyzed at a minimum follow-up (FU) of 2 years. This paper uses constructs from machine learning to define pairs of learning tasks that either shared or did not share a common subspace. Human subjects then learnt these tasks using a feedback-based approach and we hypothesised that learning would be boosted for shared subspaces. Our findings broadly supported this hypothesis with either better performance on the second task if it shared the same subspace as the first, or positive correlations over task performance for shared subspaces. These empirical findings were compared to the behaviour of a Neural Network model trained using sequential Bayesian learning and human performance was found to be consistent with a minimal capacity variant of this model. Networks with an increased representational capacity, and networks without Bayesian learning, did not show these transfer effects. Mutations in the target site of insecticides (the voltage gated sodium channel for the most widely used pyrethroid class) and over-expression of detoxification enzymes are commonly reported, but their relative contribution to phenotypic resistance remain poorly understood. Here we present a genome editing pipeline to introduce single nucleotide polymorphisms in An. gambiae which we have used to study the effect of the classical kdr mutation L1014F (L995F based on An. gambiae numbering), one of the most widely distributed resistance alleles. Introduction of 1014F in an otherwise fully susceptible genetic background increased levels of resistance to all tested pyrethroids and DDT ranging from 9.9-fold for permethrin to >24-fold for DDT. The introduction of the 1014F allele was sufficient to reduce mortality of mosquitoes after exposure to deltamethrin treated bednets, even as the only resistance mechanism present. This paper uses constructs from machine learning to define pairs of learning tasks that either shared or did not share a common subspace. Human subjects then learnt these tasks using a feedback-based approach and we hypothesised that learning would be boosted for shared subspaces. Our findings broadly supported this hypothesis with either better performance on the second task if it shared the same subspace as the first, or positive correlations over task performance for shared subspaces. These empirical findings were compared to the behaviour of a Neural Network model trained using sequential Bayesian learning and human performance was found to be consistent with a minimal capacity variant of this model. Networks with an increased representational capacity, and networks without Bayesian learning, did not show these transfer effects. Participants (N = 314) were randomised to one of three conditions control message, opinion-based message, and evidence-based message. Using a between-subjects one-way ANOVA, it was found that there was no significant effect of the U = U message on perceived risk or perceived accuracy of the message. When controlling for issue involvement, operationalised as the extent to which participants felt that they can empathise with people living with HIV, participants who received the evidence-based U = U message reported lower stigmatising attitudes than those who received the opinion-based message. These adjusted results suggested that evidence-based framing was more effective than opinion-based framing and an unrelated control message.

A prospective observational study using continuous twenty-four-hour Holter monitoring.
Inpatient rehabilitation unit of a university research hospital and patient home setting.
Fifty-five participants with acute traumatic SCI were prospectively included. For each participant, the SCI was characterized according to the International Standards for Neurological Classification of SCI by the neurological level and severity according to the American Spinal Injury Association Impairment Scale.
Comparisons between demographic characteristics and arrhythmogenic occurrences as early as possible after SCI (4 ± 2 days) followed by 1, 2, 3, 4 weeks and 6 month time points of Holter monitoring.
Bradycardia (heart rate [HR] <50 bpm) was present in 29% and 33% of the participants with cervical (C1-C8) and thoracic (T1-T12) SCI six months after SCI, respectively. The differences in episodes of bradycardia between the two groups were not significant (P < 0.54). The mean maximum HR increased significantly from 4 weeks to 6 months post-SCI (P < 0.001), however mean minimum and maximum HR were not significantly different between the groups at the six-month time point. There were no differences in many arrhythmias between recording periods or between groups at six months.

The resting QT interval, an electrocardiographic (ECG) measure of ventricular myocardial repolarization, is a heritable risk marker of cardiovascular mortality, but the mechanisms remain incompletely understood. Previously reported candidate genes have provided insights into the regulatory mechanisms of the QT interval. However, there are still important knowledge gaps. We aimed to gain new insights by (1) providing new candidate genes, (2) identifying pleiotropic associations with other cardiovascular traits, and (3) scanning for sexually dimorphic genetic effects. We conducted a genome-wide association analysis for resting QT interval with ~ 9.8 million variants in 52 107 individuals of European ancestry without known cardiovascular disease from the UK Biobank. We identified 40 loci, 13 of which were novel, including 2 potential sex-specific loci, explaining ~ 11% of the trait variance. Candidate genes at novel loci were involved in myocardial structure and arrhythmogenic cardiomyopathy. Investigation of pleiotropic effects of QT interval variants using phenome-wide association analyses in 302 000 unrelated individuals from the UK Biobank and pairwise genome-wide comparisons with other ECG and cardiac imaging traits revealed genetic overlap with atrial electrical pathology. Our population consisted of ambulatory patients with laboratory-confirmed influenza enrolled at five study sites during nine influenza seasons after the 2009 influenza A virus subtype H1N1 (H1N1) pandemic. We observed that young children aged less then 5 years tended to be more often infected with H1N1 during the pre-peak period while adults aged ≥65 years tended to be more often infected with H1N1 during the post-peak period. This was a multicenter case series performed as a part of the European Crohn's and Colitis Organisation (ECCO) Collaborative Network of Exceptionally Rare case reports (CONFER) project.
This report includes 27 patients with primary hypogammaglobulinemia and IBD-like features [20 males and 7 females, median age 45.6 years (Interquartile range (IQR) 35.2-59]. Crohn's disease-like features were noted in 23 patients, four patients had ulcerative colitis-like features. The diagnosis of hypogammaglobulinemia preceded IBD-like features diagnosis in 20 patients (median of 7 years prior, IQR 2.6-20.6 years), and followed IBD-like features appearance in 7 cases (median of one year after, IQR 0.45-5.6 years).Hypogammaglobulinemia etiologies were common var majority of cases after appropriate treatment.

The resting QT interval, an electrocardiographic (ECG) measure of ventricular myocardial repolarization, is a heritable risk marker of cardiovascular mortality, but the mechanisms remain incompletely understood. Previously reported candidate genes have provided insights into the regulatory mechanisms of the QT interval. However, there are still important knowledge gaps. We aimed to gain new insights by (1) providing new candidate genes, (2) identifying pleiotropic associations with other cardiovascular traits, and (3) scanning for sexually dimorphic genetic effects. We conducted a genome-wide association analysis for resting QT interval with ~ 9.8 million variants in 52 107 individuals of European ancestry without known cardiovascular disease from the UK Biobank. We identified 40 loci, 13 of which were novel, including 2 potential sex-specific loci, explaining ~ 11% of the trait variance. Candidate genes at novel loci were involved in myocardial structure and arrhythmogenic cardiomyopathy. Investigation of pleiotropic effects of QT interval variants using phenome-wide association analyses in 302 000 unrelated individuals from the UK Biobank and pairwise genome-wide comparisons with other ECG and cardiac imaging traits revealed genetic overlap with atrial electrical pathology. A cross-sectional survey was conducted to determine the seroprevalence and risk factors influencing the presence of Brucella spp. antibodies in donkeys in Yobe south senatorial zone, Nigeria. The study was aimed at determining the importance of Brucella spp. infection in donkeys (Equus asinus). A total of 200 sera samples from of 105 males and 95 female donkeys were collected and screened for brucellosis using the rose bengal plate test (RBPT) and the indirect enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (iELISA). Data obtained were analyzed to determine associations and risk factors. The analysis revealed that 21.5% and 18.5% were seropositive by RBPT and iELISA respectively, with 22.0% and 20.0% of the male and female donkeys being seropositive by RBPT, and 19.0% and 17.9% of the male and female donkeys being seropositive by iELISA, respectively. There was a statistically significant association between donkey age and positive rate of iELISA for detecting Brucella infection. Though the positive rate was higher for males than females, there was no statistically significant association between sex and location of donkeys and the sensitivities of RBPT and iELISA for detecting Brucella infection. In conclusion, this study indicates that brucellosis exists with high seroprevalence particularly among male and adult donkeys and is of public health significance and economic importance because it can lead to infertility and abortion in the stock. ©2020 The Japanese Society of Equine Science.Ten mule foals were used to investigate serum IgG concentration. Eighteen days after DEN, a single intraperitoneal dose of Fe-NTA (5 mg Fe/kg) was administrated to rats to promote nephrotoxicity. The biochemical parameters were analyzed in serum at time intervals while the malondialdehyde (MDA) and tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α) were assessed in both serum and renal tissues. Kidney from each group was histopathologically examined at time intervals. The administration of Fe-NTA after DEN dose to albino rats resulted in acute nephrotoxicity which was characterized by a highly significant elevation of serum urea, creatinine, uric acid (p=0.000), serum and renal MDA and TNF-α (p=0.000) with vacuolation of epithelial lining renal tubules. The administration of RE, GTE and RA prior to DEN+Fe-NTA treatment significantly ameliorated the observed increased levels of the above mentioned parameters. In this study, the genotoxic potential of cisplatin and carboplatin was compared using chromosomal aberrations (CAs) and sister-chromatid exchange (SCE) assays in cultured human lymphocytes. Results showed that cisplatin and carboplatin induced a significant increase in CAs and SCEs compared to the control group (p0.05). In conclusion, cisplatin was found to be more genotoxic than carboplatin in the SCE assay in cultured human lymphocytes, and that might explain the higher cytotoxicity of cisplatin. No clinical study with significant outcome was found in the literature. From the outcomes of the preclinical studies it appears that probiotics are prospective for alleviation and treatment of lead toxicity. We therefore performed a systematic review of existing case reports on the literature of butyrfentanyl and similar analogs. We searched PubMed and Embase for articles (up until September 2018) using terms such as "butyrfentanyl" or "butyrylfentanyl." In total, our search found 271 articles and identified 10 for inclusion in this review. A total of 33 cases were found with 61% of those being fatal. The most common route of administration was intravenous, but other routes of administration were readily used such as oral, intranasal, and inhalation. Most cases reported use of concomitant licit and illicit pharmacological agents. The toxidrome was consistent with other opioid overdoses, and naloxone was successfully used in nine of 10 patients. We encourage toxicology screenings of novel fentanyl analogs such as butyrfentanyl or 4-fluorobutyrfentanyl when an opioid overdose of unknown nature presents.

Safe and reliable large animal diabetes models are a key prerequisite for advanced preclinical studies on diabetes. Chemical induction is the standard model of diabetes in rodents but is often critiqued in higher animals due to reduced efficacy, relevant side effects, and inadequate mortality rate. In this chapter, we aim to describe both pharmacological and surgical approaches for reproducible and safe diabetes models in minipigs and primates. In addition, genetically modified pig models for diabetes research are described.Studies performed in humans and animal models have implicated the environment in the etiology of type 1 diabetes (T1D), but the nature and timing of the interactions triggering β cell autoimmunity are poorly understood. Virus infections have been postulated to be involved in disease mechanisms, but the underlying mechanisms are not known. It is exceedingly difficult to establish a cause-and-effect relationship between viral infection and diabetes in humans. Thus, we have used the BioBreeding Diabetes-Resistant (BBDR) and the LEW1.WR1 rat models of virus-induced disease to elucidate how virus infection leads to T1D. The immunophenotype of these strains is normal, and spontaneous diabetes does not occur in a specific pathogen-free environment. However, β cell inflammation and diabetes with many similarities to the human disease are induced by infection with the parvovirus Kilham rat virus (KRV). KRV-induced diabetes in the BBDR and LEW1.WR1 rat models is limited to young animals and can be induced in both male and female rats. Their distinctive features are described with special reference to their pathology, immunology, and genetics and compared with the situation in patients with type 1 diabetes mellitus. For all three established rat models, a distinctive genetic mutation has been identified that is responsible for the manifestation of the diabetic syndrome in these rat strains.Diabetes is a major public health problem it is estimated that 420 million people are affected globally. Monogenic forms of diabetes are less common, but variants in monogenic diabetes genes have been shown to contribute to type 2 diabetes risk. In vitro and in vivo models of monogenic forms of diabetes related to the endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress response provided compelling evidence on the role of ER stress and dysregulated ER stress signaling on β cell demise in type 1 and type 2 diabetes. In this chapter, we describe the genetics, background, and phenotype of ER stress-related monogenic diabetes mouse models, and we comment on their advantages and disadvantages. We conclude that these mouse models are very useful tools for monogenic diabetes molecular pathogenesis studies, although there is a variability on the methodology that is used. Regarding the use of these models for therapeutic testing of ER stress modulators, a specific consideration should be given to the fact that they recapitulate some, but not all, the phenotypic characteristics of the human disease.The polygenic background of selectively bred diabetes models mimics the etiology of type 2 diabetes. So far, three different rodent models (Goto-Kakizaki rats, Nagoya-Shibata-Yasuda ****, and Oikawa-Nagao ****) have been established in the diabetes research field by continuous selective breeding for glucose tolerance from outbred rodent stocks. The origin of hyperglycemia in these rodents is mainly insulin secretion deficiency from the pancreatic β-cells and mild insulin resistance in insulin target organs. In this chapter, we summarize backgrounds and phenotypes of these rodent models to highlight their importance in diabetes research. Then, we introduce experimental methodologies to evaluate β-cell exocytosis as a putative common defect observed in these rodent models.Many animal models that are currently used in appetite and obesity research share at least some main features of human obesity and its comorbidities. Hence, even though no animal model replicates all aspects of "common" human obesity, animal models are imperative in studying the control of energy balance and reasons for its imbalance that may eventually lead to overt obesity. The most frequently used animal models are small rodents that may be based on mutations or manipulations of individual or several genes and on the exposure to obesogenic diets or other manipulations that predispose the animals to gaining or maintaining excessive weight. Characteristics include hyperphagia or changes in energy metabolism and at least in some models the frequent comorbidities of obesity, like hyperglycemia, insulin resistance, or diabetes-like syndromes. In this chapter, we aim to describe both pharmacological and surgical approaches for reproducible and safe diabetes models in minipigs and primates. Their distinctive features are described with special reference to their pathology, immunology, and genetics and compared with the situation in patients with type 1 diabetes mellitus. In this chapter, we describe the genetics, background, and phenotype of ER stress-related monogenic diabetes mouse models, and we comment on their advantages and disadvantages. We conclude that these mouse models are very useful tools for monogenic diabetes molecular pathogenesis studies, although there is a variability on the methodology that is used. Regarding the use of these models for therapeutic testing of ER stress modulators, a specific consideration should be given to the fact that they recapitulate some, but not all, the phenotypic characteristics of the human disease.The polygenic background of selectively bred diabetes models mimics the etiology of type 2 diabetes. Neuropathic pain is one of the most common types of chronic pain that is very difficult to treat. Numerous studies have shown the potential role of vitamins in relieving both hyperalgesia and allodynia. While antimicrobial stewardship programs (ASPs) are well established at most large medical centers, small or rural facilities often do not have the same resources; therefore, different methods must be developed to start or expand ASPs for these hospitals. The purpose of this quality improvement study was to describe the implementation of a pharmacist-led remote ASP and assess the effect on antimicrobial use. Antimicrobial use in days of therapy per 1000 patient days (DOT/1000 PD) was compared between the six months before and after remote ASP implementation. Changes in system-wide, facility-specific, and target antimicrobial use were evaluated. Pharmacist interventions, acceptance rates, and number of times infectious disease (ID) physician assistance was sought were also tracked. System-wide antimicrobial use was 4.6% less in the post-implementation time period than in the pre-implementation time period, with vancomycin, piperacillin/tazobactam, and fluoroquinolones having the greatest reductions in use. Ninety-one percent of interventions made during the post-implementation period were accepted. ID physician review was requested 38 times, and direct ID physician intervention was required six times. Remote ASPs delivered from a central facility to serve a larger system may reduce antimicrobial use, especially against targeted agents, with minimal increase in ID physician workload.To prevent chemical accidents, the United States (US), the European Union (EU), and the Republic of Korea operate legal systems, such as risk management plans (RMP) and process safety management (PSM), to prevent chemical accidents inside and outside the workplace. The duty to implement chemical accident prevention systems and the criteria for being a target workplace are dependent on the designated quantities of chemicals handled. A chemical accident prevention system is obligatory for storage and handling of legally declared chemicals in the workplace. Benzene, toluene, xylene, methyl ethyl ketone, and ethyl acetate are all flammable materials that are commonly used as solvents in the chemical industry. These substances are grouped into flammable substances groups in the US and the EU, and are managed with the same designated quantities. However, in Korea, the designated quantities are benzene, 10,000 kg; toluene, xylene, and methyl ethyl ketone, 200,000 kg; and ethyl acetate, 20,000 kg. In order to evaluate the validity of the chemical quantities, fire explosion scenarios during chemical accidents were modeled using two modeling programs, Areal Location of Hazardous Atmosphere (ALOHA) and Korea Off-Site Risk Assessment Supporting Tool (KORA) software, under the same conditions. Similar damage radii were found for the five flammable materials with both pool fires and vapor cloud explosions (VCE). Based on these damage radii, the designated quantities of five substances were calculated and included in the range (10,000 to 13,500 kg). The results show that current designated quantities underestimate chemical substances, and for the prevention of accidents and post-management after chemical accidents, it is necessary to manage flammable substances under one grouping.Organizational research has shown that personal initiative is related to both climate for initiative and work engagement. Yet little is known about what happens to this relationship once the focus shifts to the team level. When organizational and team goals are involved this renders the relationship more complex, and team identification and organizational identification are likely to be key to understanding it. In this paper we develop a model to deal with these complexities. This predicts (a) that team identification will impact on team initiative through team work engagement while (b) organizational identification will impact on team initiative through climate for initiative. It is also expected that team initiative will, in turn, impact on team productivity, and on radical innovation as evaluated by the team leader. This model was tested in a field study with 327 participants of 76 workteams belonging to 50 organizations. Results of SEM and regression analysis supported our main hypotheses. Findings showed that initiative is related to performance and also underline the importance of initiative at a team level. At the same time they suggest that to develop teams with high levels of initiative it is important to promote both organizational and team identification.Huanglongbing (HLB), a bacterial disease caused by Candidatus Liberibacter asiaticus (CLas), is a major threat to the citrus industry. In a previous study conducted by our laboratory, several citrus transgenic trees expressing the Arabidopsis thaliana NPR1 (AtNPR1) gene remained HLB-free when grown in a field site under high HLB disease pressure. To determine the molecular mechanisms behind AtNPR1-mediated tolerance to HLB, a transcriptome analysis was performed using AtNPR1 overexpressing transgenic trees and non-transgenic trees as control, from which we identified 57 differentially expressed genes (DEGs). Data mining revealed the enhanced transcription of genes encoding pathogen-associated molecular patterns (PAMPs), transcription factors, leucine-rich repeat receptor kinases (LRR-RKs), and putative ankyrin repeat-containing proteins. These proteins were highly upregulated in the AtNPR1 transgenic line compared to the control plant. Furthermore, analysis of protein-protein interactions indicated that AtNPR1 interacts with CsNPR3 and CsTGA5 in the nucleus. These substances are grouped into flammable substances groups in the US and the EU, and are managed with the same designated quantities. However, in Korea, the designated quantities are benzene, 10,000 kg; toluene, xylene, and methyl ethyl ketone, 200,000 kg; and ethyl acetate, 20,000 kg. In order to evaluate the validity of the chemical quantities, fire explosion scenarios during chemical accidents were modeled using two modeling programs, Areal Location of Hazardous Atmosphere (ALOHA) and Korea Off-Site Risk Assessment Supporting Tool (KORA) software, under the same conditions. Similar damage radii were found for the five flammable materials with both pool fires and vapor cloud explosions (VCE). Based on these damage radii, the designated quantities of five substances were calculated and included in the range (10,000 to 13,500 kg). The results show that current designated quantities underestimate chemical substances, and for the prevention of accidents and post-management after chemical accidents, it is necessary to manage flammable substances under one grouping.Organizational research has shown that personal initiative is related to both climate for initiative and work engagement. Yet little is known about what happens to this relationship once the focus shifts to the team level. When organizational and team goals are involved this renders the relationship more complex, and team identification and organizational identification are likely to be key to understanding it. In this paper we develop a model to deal with these complexities. This predicts (a) that team identification will impact on team initiative through team work engagement while (b) organizational identification will impact on team initiative through climate for initiative. It is also expected that team initiative will, in turn, impact on team productivity, and on radical innovation as evaluated by the team leader. This model was tested in a field study with 327 participants of 76 workteams belonging to 50 organizations. Results of SEM and regression analysis supported our main hypotheses. Findings showed that initiative is related to performance and also underline the importance of initiative at a team level. At the same time they suggest that to develop teams with high levels of initiative it is important to promote both organizational and team identification.Huanglongbing (HLB), a bacterial disease caused by Candidatus Liberibacter asiaticus (CLas), is a major threat to the citrus industry. In a previous study conducted by our laboratory, several citrus transgenic trees expressing the Arabidopsis thaliana NPR1 (AtNPR1) gene remained HLB-free when grown in a field site under high HLB disease pressure. To determine the molecular mechanisms behind AtNPR1-mediated tolerance to HLB, a transcriptome analysis was performed using AtNPR1 overexpressing transgenic trees and non-transgenic trees as control, from which we identified 57 differentially expressed genes (DEGs). Data mining revealed the enhanced transcription of genes encoding pathogen-associated molecular patterns (PAMPs), transcription factors, leucine-rich repeat receptor kinases (LRR-RKs), and putative ankyrin repeat-containing proteins. These proteins were highly upregulated in the AtNPR1 transgenic line compared to the control plant. Furthermore, analysis of protein-protein interactions indicated that AtNPR1 interacts with CsNPR3 and CsTGA5 in the nucleus. The surface extension of all-carbon based bowl-shaped molecules, such as corannulene and sumanene, to synthesize even larger buckybowls has been widely studied, leaving other concave compounds with heteroatoms less considered. Herein we present a highly curved molecule synthesized via stepwise cyclization of fjords of a bisacridone derivative. Crystallographic analysis unambiguously confirmed a boat-shaped structure with deformed bottom benzene ring. Theoretical calculation unravels an inversion process with an S-shaped transition structure rather than a planar one. The enlarged boat demonstrates interesting properties, such as red shifts in absorption and emission spectra, enhanced emission intensity, and convergent frontier molecular orbital energy levels, in comparison to the related concave N-heterotriangulene. © 2020 Wiley-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. Spermatozoa were recovered by the epididymal tail compression technique and analysed for kinetics on a computer-assisted semen analysis (CASA system). Morphology (modified Karras) and sperm membrane integrity were analysed by eosin-nigrosine staining. Data were analysed by Pearson's correlation test (p less then .01). The mean total motility was 69.0% ± 17.7, progressive motility was 43.7% ± 14.7, average path velocity (VAP) was 127.0 µm/s ± 20.7, curvilinear velocity (VCL) was 221.0 µm/s ± 31.1, and sperm velocity index (SVI) was 389.9 ± 56.1. There were positive correlations between the peak systolic velocity (PSV) in the proximal supratesticular region with the SVI (r = .529), VCL (r = .555) and VAP (r = .473), and a negative correlation with the percentage of slow spermatozoa (r = -.463). The results suggest that the testicular artery blood flow velocity can positively affect the speed of spermatozoa movement. Here we demonstrate the possibility to add optical switchability to graphene FETs (GFET) by functionalizing the graphene channel with optically switchable azobenzene molecules. The azobenzene molecules were incorporated to the GFET channel by building a van der Waals heterostructure with a carbon nanomembrane (CNM), which is used as a molecular interposer to attach the azobenzene molecules. Under exposure with 365 nm and 455 nm light, azobenzene molecules transition between cis and trans molecular conformations, respectively, resulting in a switching of the molecular dipole moment.
