  • Small non-coding RNAs (sRNAs) are ubiquitous components of bacterial adaptive regulatory networks underlying stress responses and chronic intracellular infection of eukaryotic hosts. Thus, sRNA-mediated regulation of gene expression is expected to play a major role in the establishment of mutualistic root nodule endosymbiosis between nitrogen-fixing rhizobia and legume plants. However, knowledge about this level of genetic regulation in this group of plant-interacting bacteria is still rather scarce. Here, we review insights into the rhizobial non-coding transcriptome and sRNA-mediated post-transcriptional regulation of symbiotic relevant traits such as nutrient uptake, cell cycle, quorum sensing, or nodule development. We provide details about the transcriptional control and protein-assisted activity mechanisms of the functionally characterized sRNAs involved in these processes. The BR-signaling mutant was characterized by a decreased level of the HSP transcripts and heat-shock proteins. In the BR-deficient mutants, there were temperature-dependent cases when the decreased accumulation of the HSP70 and HSP90 transcripts was connected to an increased accumulation of these HSP. The significance of changes in the accumulation of HSPs during acclimation at 27 °C and 5 °C is discussed in the context of the altered tolerance to more extreme temperatures of the studied mutants (i.e., heat stress and frost, respectively).PIN-FORMED (PIN) encodes a key auxin polar transport family that plays a crucial role in the outward transport of auxin and several growth and development processes, including dwarfing trees. We identified a dwarfing pear rootstock 'OHF51' (Pyrus communis), which limits the growth vigor of the 'Xueqing' (Pyrus bretschneideri × Pyrus pyrifolia) scion, and isolated 14 putative PbPINs from the pear Pyrus bretschneideri. The phylogenic relationships, structure, promoter regions, and expression patterns were analyzed. PbPINs were classified into two main groups based on the protein domain structure and categorized into three major groups using the neighbor-joining algorithm. Promoter analysis demonstrated that PbPINs might be closely related to plant growth and development. Through quantitative real-time PCR (qRT-PCR) analysis, we found that the expression patterns of 14 PbPINs varied upon exposure to different organs in dwarfing and vigorous stocks, 'OHF51' and 'QN101' (Pyrus betulifolia), indicating that they might play varying roles in different tissues and participated in the regulation of growth vigor. These results provide fundamental insights into the characteristics and evolution of the PINs family, as well as the possible relationship between dwarfing ability and auxin polar transport.

  • Results A decrease in AHI for all the patients with different severities of OSA tested in this study was achieved, with 66.3% average improvement (32-100%). Fifty percent or more improvement was achieved in 78% (21) of all patients. Conclusions Based on our observations, the NightLase® LAUP treatment of OSA represents an effective and safe therapeutic method. Further research and longer term prospective trials are needed to improve the evidence base for the potential integration of this treatment method into the current guidelines for treatment of OSA.
    Sensitive and specific biomarkers for use in progressive multiple sclerosis (MS) have not been established. We investigate neurofilament light (NfL) as a treatment response biomarker in progressive MS.

    To evaluate whether ibudilast 100 mg/day alters serum and cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) levels of NfL in progressive MS.

    In a protocol-defined exploratory analysis from a 2-year, phase 2 clinical trial of ibudilast in progressive MS (NCT01982942), serum samples were collected from 239 subjects and a subset contributed CSF and assayed using single-molecule assay (SIMOA) immunoassay. A mixed model for repeated measurements yielded log(NfL) as the response variable.

    The geometric mean baseline serum NfL was 31.9 and 28.8 pg/mL in placebo and ibudilast groups, respectively. The geometric mean baseline CSF NfL was 1150.8 and 1290.3 pg/mL in placebo and ibudilast groups, respectively. Serum and CSF NfL correlations were
     = 0.52 and
     = 0.78 at weeks 48 and 96, respectively. Over 96 weeks, there was no between-group difference in NfL in either serum (

The more closely we can experimentally simulate the in vivo environment, the more relevance in vitro research on myoblasts will have. In this context, isolation of satellite cells from muscle tissue causes activation while myoblasts remain activated in culture, thus not simulating quiescence as in their in vivo niche. Cells synchronized for cell cycle present a good starting point for experimental intervention. In the past, myoblast quiescence has been induced using suspension culture (SuCu) and, recently, by knockout serum replacement (KOSR)-supplemented culture media. We assessed the proportion of cells in G0 and molecular regulators after combining the two quiescence-inducing approaches. Quiescence was induced in primary human myoblasts (PHMs) in vitro using KOSR-treatment for 10 days or suspension in vie. We suggest that this blended new protocol can be considered in future biomedical research if differentiation is detected too early during myoblast expansion. This shall also inform new ways to bridge the in vitro and in vivo divides in regenerative medicine research.Objectives To compare the effect of two different humpectomy techniques in the internal nasal valve (INV) angle in human anatomic specimens. Methods Seven human anatomic specimens (14 heminoses) were included. A strip of subdorsal septal cartilage was removed and, in each nose, the right side of the middle roof lied intact over and was sutured to the septal cartilage (spare roof technique [SRT]), whereas in the left side the upper lateral cartilage was folded and sutured to the septal cartilage (component dorsal hump reduction [CDHR]). The INV angle was measured pre- and postoperatively. Results Mean age of the specimens was 69.86 (60-80) years. Five were female. CDHR resulted in a mean change of +1.71 ± 3.12° (p = 0.197), +0.62 ± 6.89° (p = 0.817) and +6.97 ± 6.84° (p = 0.036) after resection of 2, 4, and 6 mm of septal cartilage, respectively. SRT resulted in a mean change of +1.27 ± 2.37° (p = 0.207), +6.89 ± 1.19° (p  less then  0.001), and +12.55 ± 1.79° (p  less then  0.001) after resection of 2, 4, and 6 mm of septal cartilage, respectively. In SRT, the amount of septal cartilage resection presented a significant correlation with change in INV angle (r = 0.813, p  less then  0.001). Conclusions In this human anatomic study, SRT significantly increased INV angle.

  • Some studies have shown that augmenting buspirone with antidepressant has similar efficacy as the combination with two antidepressants in patients with major depressive disorder (MDD). Some researchers assume that the antidepressant boosting effect of buspirone is revealed under a poop-out state, which means a phenomenon where some patients having an initial response to an antidepressant may worsen or not improve any more even though they continue treatment because of serotonin depletion. Loudness dependence of auditory evoked potential (LDAEP) is a reliable marker of central serotonergic activity, and is inversely correlated with central serotonergic activity. Thus LDAEP will be a biological marker for prediction of treatment response with buspirone augmentation with SSRI because it can measure central serotonergic activity such as serotonin depletion. Two cases will be introduced and the literature evidence about whether LDAEP can predict the treatment response of buspirone augmentation in patients with MDD will be reviewed.OBJECTIVE This study investigates the association between mental disorders and interferon nontreatment in patients with chronic hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection in a large national sample. METHODS Using the National Health Insurance Research Database of Taiwan, we conducted a nationwide population-based study. Each case was matched to five controls by age, sex, urbanization, and income. Conditional logistic regression was used to assess odds of HCV nontreatment in different mental disorders. RESULTS From 1999 to 2013, we identified 92,970 subjects with HCV infection and 15,495 HCV cases (16.7%) had received IFN therapy. Other than chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, the medical diseases and mental disorders were significantly different between IFN and non-IFN treated HCV patients. After adjusting for medical diseases, depressive disorder and anxiety disorder was positively associated with receiving IFN therapy. Patients with schizophrenia, bipolar disorders and alcohol use disorders were significantly less likely to receive interferon. Antidepressant exposure (cumulative daily exposure or cumulative daily dose) was associated with lower odds of IFN treatment. https://www.selleckchem.com/products/jph203.html CONCLUSION Our nationwide cohort study demonstrated that INF nontreatment rate was lower in certain mental disorders. Antidepressant exposure might lower the chance of receiving IFN treatment. In order to prevent contamination of tuberculosis, diagnosis must be made in short time and treatment should be started as soon as possible The aim of this study is to optimize the loop mediated isothermal amplification (LAMP) method, which provides a **** faster and more sensitive result than PCR method and allows the replication of target nucleic acid sequences under isothermal conditions without the need for laboratory infrastructure. MATERIALS AND METHODS Sputum samples were homogenized with 5% trypsin solution in CaCl2 to obtain DNA. DNA was purified using QIAGEN QIAamp DNA mini kit. LAMP primers were design using Primer explorer V5 program according to IS6110 gene of Mycobacterium tuberculosis. NEB Bst 3.0 DNA polymerase kit was used for LAMP reactions. Besides, LAMP reactions were compared with TaqMan based RT-PCR method using NEB's Taq polymerase kit. Finally, for visualization of LAMP products, lateral flow dipsticks that produced by Milenia Biotec, colorimetric 2X LAMP master mix that produced by NEB and %2 w/v agarose gel electrophoresis methods were used. RESULTS Optimum amplification temperature for LAMP was found to be 71.4 °C. The detection limit of the method was 102 CFU/ml and sensitivity was determined 100% compared to five different Mycobacterium species. CONCLUSION The current study indicated that the LAMP-LFD and colorimetric LAMP protocol optimized with sputum samples can be reliable used as a rapid, sensitive and specific assay in the diagnosis of tuberculosis in the field.OBJECTIVE Muslims worship by fasting from pre-dawn (suhoor) until sunset (iftar) for 30 days in the religious month of Ramadan. Loudness dependence of auditory evoked potential (LDAEP) is a reliable marker of central serotonergic activity, and is inversely correlated with central serotonergic activity. Thus LDAEP will be a biological marker for prediction of treatment response with buspirone augmentation with SSRI because it can measure central serotonergic activity such as serotonin depletion. Two cases will be introduced and the literature evidence about whether LDAEP can predict the treatment response of buspirone augmentation in patients with MDD will be reviewed.OBJECTIVE This study investigates the association between mental disorders and interferon nontreatment in patients with chronic hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection in a large national sample. METHODS Using the National Health Insurance Research Database of Taiwan, we conducted a nationwide population-based study. Each case was matched to five controls by age, sex, urbanization, and income. Conditional logistic regression was used to assess odds of HCV nontreatment in different mental disorders. RESULTS From 1999 to 2013, we identified 92,970 subjects with HCV infection and 15,495 HCV cases (16.7%) had received IFN therapy. Other than chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, the medical diseases and mental disorders were significantly different between IFN and non-IFN treated HCV patients. After adjusting for medical diseases, depressive disorder and anxiety disorder was positively associated with receiving IFN therapy. Patients with schizophrenia, bipolar disorders and alcohol use disorders were significantly less likely to receive interferon.     To characterize differences in cardiac structure and function in hemodialysis (HD) patients with diabetic nephropathy (DN) and in those without using echocardiography and to determine their impact on the prediction of mortality using echocardiographic parameters.

    Clinical, laboratory, and echocardiographic data were collected from patients commencing HD.

    Compared with those without DN, patients with DN had lower peak velocity of the early diastolic wave (e'), larger left atria, and higher peak early diastolic velocity (E)/e' and peak velocity of tricuspid regurgitation (TR). In addition, a larger proportion of DN patients had a combination of left ventricular (LV) diastolic dysfunction, cardiac valve calcification, moderate-to-severe cardiac valve regurgitation (CVR), and at least moderate pericardial effusion (PE). After accounting for age, sex, smoking, hypertension, hemoglobin, and albumin, DN was responsible for e'  < 10 cm/s, E/e' >13 m/s, TR >2.8 m/s, LV diastolic dysfunction, CVR, and PE. LV diastolic dysfunction and E/e' >13 were the most useful predictors of mortality in patients with DN.

    Methimazole (MMI) is used to treat hyperthyroidism in Graves' disease. It is rare to encounter patients in whom hyperthyroidism cannot be controlled using high doses of MMI.Case presentation A 21-year-old woman was referred to our hospital because of MMI-resistant Graves' disease. Although her MMI dose had been increased to 120 mg/day, her serum thyroid hormone concentration was too high to be measured. Additional therapy with lithium carbonate, and then with dexamethasone and inorganic iodine, was initiated. After 14 days, the patient's serum thyroid hormone concentration normalized, while she was taking 150 mg/day MMI, 800 mg/day lithium carbonate, 6 mg/day dexamethasone and 306 mg/day inorganic iodine, and total thyroidectomy was then performed. The patient was discharged 8 days after the thyroidectomy and experienced no major complications.

    We have presented a rare case of Graves' disease that was resistant to high-dose MMI. Combination therapy of MMI with lithium carbonate, dexamethasone and inorganic iodine may represent a therapeutic option for the preoperative preparation of patients with MMI-resistant Graves' disease.

A special premise for such a decision is that the abusive partner undertakes therapy that serves to build security in the family. An important indicator of dealing with violence is post-traumatic growth (PTG), a concept introduced by Calhoun and Tedeschi (1998) to describe positive changes as a result of traumatic experiences. The purpose of the research was to assess PTG changes in the course of relationships in which the woman had experienced violence from her partner, but both her partner and she had undertaken therapy and changed their behavior (N = 48). The conducted research used a demographic survey and two questionnaires The Polish version of the Impact Event Scale-Revised (IES-R, Weiss, Marmara prepared by JuczyÅ„ski and OgiÅ„ska-Bulik [2009]) examining three dimensions of trauma (intrusion, hyperarousal, and avoidance) and the Post-traumatic Growth Inventory (Tedeschi & Calhoun [2004]; Polish version prepared by OgiÅ„ska-Bulik & JuczyÅ„ski [2010]). The studies showed that over a period of one and half years, significant changes in PTG had taken place. Reportedly, changes in self-perception and changes in relating to others have decreased, while appreciation of life increased but spiritual life remained the same. Our results found participants were uncomfortable sharing vocal samples, need researchers to take a more active role in supporting their understanding of passive data collection, and wanted more transparency on how data were to be used in research. Despite these findings, participants trusted researchers with the collection of passive data. They further indicated that long term study retention could be improved with feedback and return of information based on the collected data. We describe a case of a 62-year-old man with a background of chronic rhinosinusitis who presented to hospital with confusion, fever and bilateral green purulent rhinorrhoea. After immediate sepsis management, urgent contrast-enhanced computed tomography head revealed opacification of all paranasal sinuses and bony erosion of the lateral walls of both ethmoid sinuses. He was treated with intravenous antibiotics, topical nasal steroids, decongestants and irrigation. Following a turbid lumbar puncture and multidisciplinary discussion, he was admitted to the critical care unit and later intubated due to further neurological deterioration. After 13 days admission and rehabilitation in the community he made a good recovery. This case highlights the importance of timely diagnosis and appropriate management of acute rhinosinusitis and awareness of the possible complications. Joint care with physicians and intensivists is crucial in the management of these sick patients.
    To identify whether the timing of surgery affects red blood cell (RBC) transfusion requirements in the elderly with intertrochanteric fractures.

    We retrospectively studied all patients undergoing surgical fixation of their intertrochanteric fractures in our hospital between January 2009 and December 2018 and analyzed the relationship between the timing of surgery and RBC transfusion.

    A total of 679 patients were included in this study. After immediate sepsis management, urgent contrast-enhanced computed tomography head revealed opacification of all paranasal sinuses and bony erosion of the lateral walls of both ethmoid sinuses. He was treated with intravenous antibiotics, topical nasal steroids, decongestants and irrigation. Following a turbid lumbar puncture and multidisciplinary discussion, he was admitted to the critical care unit and later intubated due to further neurological deterioration. After 13 days admission and rehabilitation in the community he made a good recovery.     Pulmonary sarcomatoid carcinoma (PSC) is a rarely occurring variant of non-small cell lung cancer with sarcoma-like features. Compared with traditional non-small cell lung cancer, PSC patients typically present later and have poorer prognoses, irrespective of stage. The standard of care is resection, but guidelines for the use of adjuvant chemotherapy have not been established. To advance the development of evidence-based management algorithms for PSC after resection, a statistical analysis on a nationwide representative sample of patients was performed.

    A retrospective cohort study was performed by querying the National Cancer Database for patients with a diagnosis of PSC between 2004 and 2015. Patients who received complete anatomical resection with or without adjuvant chemotherapy were included. Multivariable regression was used to detect factors associated with the receipt of adjuvant chemotherapy. Multivariable Cox regression of overall survival and Kaplan-Meier survival analysis on propensity-matched groups was conducted to study the association between adjuvant chemotherapy and prognosis.

    We included 1497 patients with PSC in the final analysis. Factors associated with receiving adjuvant chemotherapy were age, histology, and receipt of adjuvant radiation. The results of multivariable Cox analysis and Kaplan-Meier analysis on propensity matched groups yielded similar trends adjuvant chemotherapy was associated with improved 5-year overall survival for stage II and III disease, but not for stage I disease.

    Little is known regarding the profile of patients with multiorgan failure listed for simultaneous cardiac transplantation and secondary organ. In addition, few studies have reported how these patients are bridged with mechanical circulatory support (MCS). In this study, we examined national data of patients listed for multiorgan transplantation and their outcomes after bridging with or without MCS.

    United Network for Organ Sharing data were reviewed for adult multiorgan transplantations from 1986 to 2019. Post-transplant patients and total waitlist listings were examined and stratified according to MCS status. Survival was assessed via Cox regression in the post-transplant cohort and Fine-Gray competing risk regression with transplantation as a competing risk in the waitlist cohort.

    There were 4534 waitlist patients for multiorgan transplant during the study period, of whom 2117 received multiorgan transplants. There was no significant difference in post-transplant survival between the MCS types and thoiorgan heart transplant patients. Waitlist data show that extracorporeal membrane oxygenation patients have profoundly worse survival irrespective of preoperative factors including organ type listed. Survival on the waitlist for multiorgan transplant has improved across device eras.
    To assess the impact of the presence of bland thrombus (BT) on prognosis of patients treated with resection of renal cell carcinoma (RCC) with inferior vena cava tumor thrombus (IVCTT).

    The medical records of a total of 145 consecutive postsurgical RCC patients with level I-IV IVCTT were reviewed from January 2008 to August 2018. Associations of BT with clinicopathological variables were estimated by chi-square test or Student's t-test. Kaplan-Meier method and multivariate Cox proportional hazard model were used. The eighth TNM staging system, "Spiess PE" model, University of California at Los Angeles Integrated Staging System and Stage, Size, Grade, and Necrosis (SSIGN) score were selected to assess whether BT could improve their predictive abilities.

    BT was observed in 34 (23.4%) patients and was significantly associated with increased levels of IVCTT (P = 0.004) and invasion of IVC wall (P = 0.030). Multivariable Cox analyses revealed that tumor grade, T stage, M stage, tumor thrombus consistency and BT were independent risk factors for both progression-free survival and overall survival. The concordance indexes ranged from a low of 0.652 in TNM to a high of 0.731 in SSIGN, and integrating BT into each base model led to an increased predictive accuracies of 6.2% for TNM (P = 0.025), 4.0% for "Spiess PE" model (P = 0.069), 2.1% for University of California at Los Angeles Integrated Staging System (P = 0.149) and 1.2% for SSIGN (P = 0.290), respectively.

Visualization of organellar electrical activity in living cells requires both a suitable reporter and non-invasive imaging at high spatiotemporal resolution. Here we present hVoSorg, an optical method to monitor changes in the membrane potential of subcellular membranes. This method takes advantage of a FRET pair consisting of a membrane-bound voltage-insensitive fluorescent donor and a non-fluorescent voltage-dependent acceptor that rapidly moves across the membrane in response to changes in polarity. Compared to the currently available techniques, hVoSorg has advantages including simple and precise subcellular targeting, the ability to record from individual organelles, and the potential for optical multiplexing of organellar activity.Electrochemical techniques have long been heralded for their innate sustainability as efficient methods to achieve redox reactions. In mice, Jun proteins regulate extrinsic and intrinsic pathways, which control CD8α cDC1 diversification, whereas CD103 cDC1 development is unaffected. The loss of c-Jun and JunB in DC progenitors diminishes the CD8α cDC1 pool and thus confers resistance to Listeria monocytogenes infection. Their absence in CD8α cDC1 results in impaired TLR triggering and antigen cross-presentation. Both TFs are required for the maintenance of the CD8α cDC1 subset and suppression of cDC2 identity on a transcriptional and phenotypic level. Uraemic toxins can induce hallmarks of cardiovascular disease (CVD), such as atherothrombosis, heart failure, dysrhythmias, vessel calcification and dysregulated angiogenesis. CVD is an important driver of mortality in patients with CKD; however, reliance on conventional approaches to managing CVD risk is insufficient in these patients, underscoring a need to target risk factors that are specific to CKD. Mounting evidence suggests that targeting uraemic toxins and/or pathways induced by uraemic toxins, including tryptophan metabolites and trimethylamine N-oxide (TMAO), can lower the risk of CVD in patients with CKD. Although tangible therapies resulting from our growing knowledge of uraemic toxicity are yet to materialize, a number of pharmacological and non-pharmacological approaches have the potential to abrogate the effects of uraemic toxins, for example, by decreasing the production of uraemic toxins, by modifying metabolic pathways induced by uraemic toxins such as those controlled by aryl hydrocarbon receptor signalling and by augmenting the clearance of uraemic toxins.

CONCLUSIONS Life satisfaction did not appear to be related to a range of health and demographic variables in the current musculoskeletal pain cohort. GO and KEGG analyses showed that the target genes of the ten miRNAs were enriched in many signalling pathways, especially focal adhesion, MAPK pathway, and so on. The results of qRT-PCR showed that among the five upregulated miRNAs, mmu-miR-467a-3p and mmu-miR-467d-3p expression in mouse serum reached a peak at 30 days post-infection (dpi). The expression of mmu-miR-376b-3p and mmu-miR-664-3p increased significantly at 18 dpi and then decreased at 30 dpi. The expression of mmu-miR-292a-5p gradually decreased from 12 to 30 dpi. Although the majority of the victims (81.0%) were discharged, four deaths occurred. A moderate agreement in differentiating emergency from nonemergency patients was observed between START and TTAS. Furthermore, both the triage systems showed similar predictions for ED disposition (START AUC/sensitivity/specificity 0.709/82.35%/55.00%; TTAS AUC/sensitivity/specificity 0.709/90.59%/45.00%). CONCLUSIONS The present study demonstrated that START and TTAS have similar triage accuracy and ability to predict ED disposition. CASE PRESENTATION Case 1 We report a case of primary neuroendocrine carcinoma of the breast in a 71-year-old Arabic woman who presented with a 3 cm palpable and mobile tumor of the right breast. Clinical and radiological assessment excluded any other primary tumor. Radical mastectomy and axillary lymph node resection were performed. A histopathological examination disclosed the diagnosis of primary breast neuroendocrine tumors, with negative surgical margins and lymph nodes (18 N-/18 N). The tumor cells were positive for neuroendocrine markers, a weak Ki-67 proliferation index and negative Her2/neu. Our patient received adjuvant hormonal treatment with anti-aromatase for 21 months. She is on regular follow-up, and she remains free of disease to date.

  • Musca domestica is a global insect-pest of human beings and animal agriculture. Pyriproxyfen, a juvenile hormone analog, has shown its potential for effective management of M. domestica. However, lethal and sublethal effects of pyriproxyfen on biological traits and demographic growth parameters of M. domestica are still unknown. The present study investigated the effects of lethal and sublethal concentrations on different biological traits of M. domestica for two generations i.e., exposed parents (F0) and their offspring (F1). Concentration-response bioassays revealed that concentrations of pyriproxyfen that caused 50% (LC50), 25% (LC25), 10% (LC10) and 2% (LC2) mortality of M. domestica were estimated as 0.12, 0.06, 0.03 and 0.01 μg/g, respectively. In the F0 generation, exposure of 3rd instar larvae to these concentrations resulted in a reduced pupation rate, lengthened pupal stage duration, light weight pupae and reduction in adult emergence in a concentration-dependent manner. In the case of F1 generation, similar trend was observed for pupation rate, pupal stage duration, and total developmental period (i.e., egg to adult); however, pupal weight was affected at LC10, LC25, LC50 levels, and adult emergence at only LC25 and LC50 levels. The values of demographic growth parameters, analyzed through age-stage, two-sex life table theory, were significantly decreased at all the levels of pyriproxyfen compared with control. This study highlights that pyriproxyfen has the potential to suppress the population of M. domestica through its lethal and sublethal effects and presents an empirical basis from which to consider management decisions for chemical control in the field.Among the new contaminants relevant for environment, one of the most significant roles is played by pharmaceuticals like antibiotic products for either human or veterinary use. Their presence could cause serious damage to bacteria and microfauna, like nematodes. Within the widely investigated nematodes, very little is known about the interaction between antibiotics and entomopathogenic nematodes (EPN). EPNs have been used for biological control of crops, due to their ability to penetrate arthropod pests and kill their hosts thanks to a complex symbiotic mechanism with specific gram-negative bacteria. Tetracycline is an antibiotic used in human and veterinary medicine, both for therapeutic purposes and for the growth of livestock. Since its action against gram-negative bacteria is documented, we verified in this study the survival, growth and pathogenicity of two species of EPNs, Steinernema vulcanicum and S. feltiae. All tests were performed with tetracycline in 1% ethanol solution and up to 300 mg/L. Apparently, this incubation did not harm the vitality of EPNs.     The primary outcomes in 133 patients (54 men, 79 women; mean age 50.8years) undergoing periapical surgery were the Oral Health Impact Profile-14 (OHIP-14) score and postoperative sequelae, including pain, analgesic intake, swelling, limited mouth opening, chewing difficulties, and postoperative infection.

    We found a significant effect on OHIP-14, pain, and analgesics, which decreased throughout the week. We found no significant differences in mean OHIP-14, pain scores, or analgesic use for gender, medical history, surgical *****, operation time, or location of the operated teeth. Younger patients had a higher OHIP-14 score in the first 2days after surgery and more pain on the first postoperative day. Women experienced more pain during the first 3days. Smokers had a higher OHIP-14 score on the first postoperative day and greater pain during the first 3days compared to non-smokers.

    There is an increasing desire for contralateral prophylactic mastectomy (CPM) among patients with unilateral breast cancer. It is unknown if risk assessment and genetic testing at the time of diagnosis will aid women in their surgical choice. We report on the uptake and predictors of CPM in women receiving a negative genetic test result for BRCA1 and BRCA2 mutations before surgery.

    Women diagnosed with breast cancer between June 2013 and May 2018 were recruited from four academic health sciences centers in Toronto, Canada. Genetic counseling (risk assessment) and genetic testing was performed prior to surgery. Women were asked about their surgical preference before surgery. At 1year post-surgery we asked what surgery was completed. This study reports on women who received a negative BRCA1/BRCA2 result.

    A total of 766 women with a mean age of 46 years (range 21-82) were included in the analysis. Before genetic counseling and testing, 37% of the women were undecided or leaning towards CPM; however, after receiving a negative **** test, 15% of the women opted for CPM. Thirty percent of women whose mother died of breast cancer elected for CPM, compared with 15% of women whose mother did not die of breast cancer (p=0.03).
