  • This article updates the understanding of two extirpation-driving infectious diseases, Batrachochytrium dendrobatidis and Batrachochytrium salamandrivorans, and Ranavirus. Experimental studies and dynamic, multifactorial population modeling have outlined the epidemiology and future population impacts of B dendrobatidis, B salamandrivorans, and Ranavirus. New genomic findings on divergent fungal and viral pathogens can help optimize control and disease management strategies. Although there have been major advances in knowledge of amphibian pathogens, controlled studies are needed to guide population recovery to elucidate and evaluate transmission routes for several pathogens, examine environmental control, and validate new diagnostic tools to confirm the presence of disease. Climate change and the interaction with humans and domestic species influences disease in avian wildlife. This article provides updated information on emerging disease conditions such as the spread of an Asian tick, Haemaphysalis longicornis, and its associated diseases among migratory birds in the eastern United States; lymphoproliferative disease virus in wild turkeys in the United States; and salmonellosis, particularly among passerines, which has zoonotic potential. In addition, it includes updated information on West Nile virus, Wellfleet Bay virus, and avian influenza and is intended to serve as a complement to the current veterinary literature for veterinarians treating avian wildlife species. Hyperthyroidism seems to be a rare, but likely underdiagnosed disease of guinea pigs (Cavia porcellus) and rabbits (Oryctolagus cuniculus). Diagnosis is confounded by nonspecific clinical signs, lack of validated assays, and species-specific reference intervals. With increasing English-language publications on the topic, naturally occurring thyroid disease is likely to be increasingly diagnosed in exotic small mammals. The most consistently observed clinical signs include weight loss with or without a change in appetite and a palpable cervical mass. Diagnosis is supported by elevated blood thyroxine concentrations. Treatment may include thyreostatic agents, radioactive iodine, or surgical thyroidectomy. This article details emerging infectious diseases that have devastating impacts on captive and wild squamates. Treatment advances have been attempted for Cryptosporidium infections in squamates. Gram-positive bacteria, Devriesea agamarum and Austwickia chelonae, are contributing to severe disease in captive and now in wild reptiles, some critically endangered. Nannizziposis, Paranannizziopsis, and Ophidiomyces continue to cause fatal disease as primary pathogens in wild and captive populations of squamates and sphenodontids. Nidovirus, bornavirus, paramyxovirus, sunshine virus, and arenavirus have emerged to be significant causes of neurorespiratory disease in snakes. Urolithiasis in captive domestic ferrets has previously been predominantly struvite uroliths, although more recent laboratory submissions show a shift to predominantly cystine uroliths. Since the 2013 article discussing the 2009 influenza pandemic affecting ferrets, there has been an additional case of suspected anthroponotic infection in a pet ferret and experimental infection with influenza viruses from humans, cats, and dogs. Most honeybee diseases are not newly emerging diseases; however, honeybee veterinary medicine and disease understanding are emerging concepts for veterinarians in the United States. Beekeepers in the hobby and commercial sectors need a prescription or veterinary feed directive from a veterinarian to obtain medically important antibiotics for administration to their honeybees. Medically important antibiotics such as oxytetracycline, lincomycin, and tylosin were removed from over-the-counter availability for use in honeybees. There are many other aspects of beekeeping that allow veterinarians to build a strong veterinarian-client patient relationship, and fulfill an integral role alongside apiarists.

  • Mitochondria, long viewed solely in the context of bioenergetics, are increasingly emerging as critical hubs for intracellular signaling. Due to their bacterial origin, mitochondria possess their own genome and carry unique lipid components that endow these organelles with specialized properties to help orchestrate multiple signaling cascades. Mitochondrial signaling modulates diverse pathways ranging from metabolism to redox homeostasis to cell fate determination. Here, we review recent progress in our understanding of how mitochondria serve as intracellular signaling platforms with a particular emphasis on lipid-mediated signaling, innate immune activation, and retrograde signaling. We further discuss how these signaling properties might potentially be exploited to develop new therapeutic strategies for a range of age-related conditions. © 2020 Tan and Finkel.Sterols are crucial components of biological membranes, which are synthetized in the ER and accumulate in the plasma membrane (PM). Here, by applying a genetically encoded sterol biosensor (D4H), we visualize a sterol flow between PM and endosomes in the fission yeast Schizosaccharomyces pombe. Using time-lapse and correlative light-electron microscopy, we found that inhibition of Arp2/3-dependent F-actin assembly promotes the reversible relocalization of D4H from the PM to internal sterol-rich compartments (STRIC) labeled by synaptobrevin Syb1. Retrograde sterol internalization to STRIC is independent of endocytosis or an intact Golgi, but depends on Ltc1, a LAM/StARkin-family protein localized to ER-PM contact sites. The PM in ltc1Δ cells over-accumulates sterols and upon Arp2/3 inhibition forms extended ER-interacting invaginations, indicating that sterol transfer contributes to PM size homeostasis. Anterograde sterol movement from STRIC is independent of canonical vesicular trafficking but requires Arp2/3, suggesting a novel role for this complex. Thus, transfer routes orthogonal to vesicular trafficking govern the flow of sterols in the cell. © 2020 Marek et al.Cotton leaf curl disease (CLCuD), caused by whitefly (Bemisiatabaci) transmitted single-stranded DNA viruses belonging to the Genus, Begomovirus (family, Geminiviridae) in association with satellite molecules; is responsible for major economic losses in cotton in three northwest (NW) Indian states Haryana, Punjab, and Rajasthan. Annual CLCuD incidences during 2012 to 2014 were estimated to be 37.5%, 63.6%, and 38.8% respectively. Cotton leaves were collected from symptomatic plants annually for three years and subjected to DNA isolation, followed by rolling circle amplification (RCA), cloning, and DNA sequencing of apparently full-length begomoviral genomes and associated betasatellites and alphasatellites. Among the thirteen CLCuD-begomoviral genomes recovered, eight were identified as Cotton leaf curl Multan virus-Rajasthan (CLCuMuV-Ra), one as -Pakistan (PK) and another as -Faisalabad (Fai), whereas, three were as Cotton leaf curl Kokhran virus-Burewala (CLCuKoV-Bu), indicating that CLCuMuV-Ra was the most prevalent begomovirus species. Five of the eight CLCuMuV-Ra sequences were found to be recombinants. The CLCuMuV-Ra- associated satellites consisted of Cotton leaf curl Multan betasatellite (CLCuMB), and Gossypium darwinii symptomless alphasatellite (GDarSLA), and Croton yellow vein mosaic alphasatellite (CrYVMoA). Data was analyzed with the aid of Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS), version 23.0. Results were presented using descriptive statistics, Fisher's Exact test and Logistic Regression analysis. Then when at least one aid project is present in a leader's birth region, we estimated the mean amount of aid the region received. SETTING This analysis covers 699 subnational units (first administrative level) across 44 African countries over 2000-2014. These administrative units were compiled into a region year panel resulting in 10,485 observations. Infolge der Erkenntnis, dass es sich bei den verschiedenen Sarkomsubtypen um unterschiedliche Erkrankungen mit unterschiedlichen genetischen Veränderungen und einem unterschiedlichen biologischen Verhalten handelt, wurden allerdings in letzter Zeit zunehmend subtypspezifische medikamentöse Therapieprotokolle eingesetzt. Selbiges gilt auch für die verschiedenen Subtypen von Liposarkomen – das myxoide/rundzellige Liposarkom, das dedifferenzierte Liposarkom und das pleomorphe Liposarkom. In diesem Beitrag werden publizierte Daten und Erfahrungen mit unterschiedlichen systemischen Therapieoptionen in den verschiedenen Therapielinien sowie ein Überblick über experimentelle Therapieansätze präsentiert.in English, German Radiotherapie ist ein integraler Bestandteil der Behandlung von Weichteilsarkomen des Erwachsenen. Während die Indikationsstellung zur additiven Radiotherapie bisher im Wesentlichen auf den bekannten allgemeinen Prognosefaktoren wie Tumorgröße, Lokalisation, Grading und (antizipiertem) Resektionsrand basierte, rückt der histologische Subtyp jetzt zunehmend in den Vordergrund. Außerdem haben sich die radiotherapeutischen Techniken deutlich weiterentwickelt, sodass eine adäquate Therapie in einigen Lokalisationen überhaupt erst möglich geworden ist. Diese Übersichtsarbeit fasst daher zunächst die allgemeinen radioonkologischen Therapieprinzipien für alle Weichteilsarkome, getrennt für die Hauptlokalisationen Extremitäten/Körperstamm und Retroperitoneum, zusammen. Dabei werden sowohl die vorliegende Evidenz für eine additive Radiotherapie per se als auch das optimale Timing (prä- vs. postoperativ) sowie grundlegende technische Prinzipien einschl. alternativer Boostverfahren wie der intraoperativen Radiotherapie erörtert. Weiterhin liegt ein besonderer Schwerpunkt auf der Indikation und Durchführung einer additiven Radiotherapie bei Liposarkomen. Infolge der Erkenntnis, dass es sich bei den verschiedenen Sarkomsubtypen um unterschiedliche Erkrankungen mit unterschiedlichen genetischen Veränderungen und einem unterschiedlichen biologischen Verhalten handelt, wurden allerdings in letzter Zeit zunehmend subtypspezifische medikamentöse Therapieprotokolle eingesetzt. Selbiges gilt auch für die verschiedenen Subtypen von Liposarkomen – das myxoide/rundzellige Liposarkom, das dedifferenzierte Liposarkom und das pleomorphe Liposarkom.     There is increasing recognition that place of death is an important component of quality of end-of-life care (EOLC) and quality of death. This study examined where older persons with and without cognitive impairment die in the United States, what factors contribute to place of death, and whether place of death influences satisfaction with EOLC.

    Cross-sectional secondary data analysis.

    In-person interviews with community-dwelling proxy respondents.

    Data were collected from 1,500 proxies for deceased participants in the National Health and Aging Trends Study (NHATS), a nationally-representative sample of community-dwelling Medicare beneficiaries aged 65 and older.

    Study variables were obtained from the NHATS "last month of life" interview data. Survey weights were applied to all analyses.

    Persons with cognitive impairment (CI) most often died at home, while cognitively healthy persons (CHP) were equally likely to die at home or in a hospital. Persons with CI who utilized the Medicare Hospice Benefitions. These findings may inform EOLC planning and policy-making and facilitate greater well-being at end-of-life.

  • Despite her successful career, she was never promoted to full professor by her academic institutions.Background Patients with persistent atrial fibrillation (AF) undergoing catheter-based AF ablation have lower success rates than those with paroxysmal AF. We compared healthcare use and clinical outcomes between patients according to their AF subtypes. Methods and Results Consecutive patients undergoing AF ablation were prospectively identified from a population-based registry in Ontario, Canada. Via linkage with administrative databases, we performed a retrospective analysis comparing the following outcomes between patients with persistent and paroxysmal AF healthcare use (defined as AF-related hospitalizations/emergency room visits), periprocedural complications, and mortality. Multivariable Poisson modeling was performed to compare the rates of AF-related and all-cause hospitalizations/emergency room visits in the year before versus after ablation. Between April 2012 and March 2016, there were 3768 consecutive patients who underwent first-time AF ablation, of whom 1040 (27.6%) had persistent AF. The mean follow-up was 1329 days. Patients with persistent AF had higher risk of AF-related hospitalization/emergency room visits (hazard ratio [HR], 1.21; 95% CI, 1.09-1.34), mortality (HR, 1.74; 95% CI, 1.15-2.63), and periprocedural complications (odds ratio, 1.36; 95% CI, 1.02-1.75) than those with paroxysmal AF. In the overall cohort, there was a 48% reduction in the rate of AF-related hospitalization/emergency room visits in the year after versus before ablation (rate ratio [RR], 0.52; 95% CI, 0.48-0.56). This reduction was observed for patients with paroxysmal (RR, 0.45; 95% CI, 0.41-0.50) and persistent (RR, 0.74; 95% CI, 0.63-0.87) AF. To determine the extent that GSTT1 genotype affects the susceptibility of individuals to the toxic and genotoxic properties of DEB, GSTT1 negative and GSTT1 positive HapMap lymphoblastoid cell lines were treated with DEB, and the extent of apoptosis and micronuclei (MN) formation was assessed. These toxicological end points were compared to the formation of DEB-GSH conjugates and 1,4-bis-(guan-7-yl)-2,3-butanediol (bis-N7G-BD) DNA-DNA cross-links. GSTT1 negative cell lines were more sensitive to DEB-induced apoptosis as compared to GSTT1 positive cell lines. We compared healthcare use and clinical outcomes between patients according to their AF subtypes. Methods and Results Consecutive patients undergoing AF ablation were prospectively identified from a population-based registry in Ontario, Canada. Via linkage with administrative databases, we performed a retrospective analysis comparing the following outcomes between patients with persistent and paroxysmal AF healthcare use (defined as AF-related hospitalizations/emergency room visits), periprocedural complications, and mortality. Multivariable Poisson modeling was performed to compare the rates of AF-related and all-cause hospitalizations/emergency room visits in the year before versus after ablation. Between April 2012 and March 2016, there were 3768 consecutive patients who underwent first-time AF ablation, of whom 1040 (27.6%) had persistent AF. The mean follow-up was 1329 days. Patients with persistent AF had higher risk of AF-related hospitalization/emergency room visits (hazard ratio [HR], 1.21; 95% CI, 1.09-1.34), mortality (HR, 1.74; 95% CI, 1.15-2.63), and periprocedural complications (odds ratio, 1.36; 95% CI, 1.02-1.75) than those with paroxysmal AF. In the overall cohort, there was a 48% reduction in the rate of AF-related hospitalization/emergency room visits in the year after versus before ablation (rate ratio [RR], 0.52; 95% CI, 0.48-0.56). This reduction was observed for patients with paroxysmal (RR, 0.45; 95% CI, 0.41-0.50) and persistent (RR, 0.74; 95% CI, 0.63-0.87) AF. In the control group, to simulate open reduction, the fracture fragments were fixed using two 4-hole straight titanium plates and 6-mm titanium screws. All mandibular models on the prepared platform were attached to the biomechanical testing machine. They were subjected to a continuou navigation system. The results of this study may encourage future clinical studies.The tumor microenvironment is a complex microenvironment that combines the biochemical and biophysical factors. When the cells are exposed to the microenvironment, the direct biophysical factor is the matrix hardness. F-actin networks were also linked with extracellular matrix, it was not regularly distributed when cells were in non-malignant tumor phases or under F-actin inhibition. F-actin might play the key role that transmitted the signal from extracellular matrix to the intracellular organelles. Further study confirmed that active YAP was translocated to nucleus on hard matrix. Cells on hard matrix with cytochalasin D reversed the cancer cell malignancy, meanwhile F-actin re-distributed to the membrane and YAP nucleus translocations were hindered. This work confirmed that F-actin and YAP were upstream-downstream cascade for the cellular and nucleus outside-in signal transductions. The above results demonstrated that hard matrix promoted breast cancer cell malignant behaviors through F-actin network and YAP activation. Red light showed the highest values of frequency of occurrence for most species, while the white light resulted in decreased abundance of some fish species. Our results emphasize the importance of choosing the color of light depending on the type of studies to be conducted.   • DOCK8 is a Cdc42-specific guanine-nucleotide exchange factor that is essential for development and functions of various subsets of leukocytes in innate and acquired immune responses. Although DOCK8 plays a critical role in spatial control of Cdc42 activity during interstitial leukocyte migration, the mechanism remains unclear. We show that the DOCK homology region (DHR)-1 domain of DOCK8 binds specifically to phosphatidylinositol 4,5-bisphosphate (PI(4,5)P2) and is required for its recruitment to the plasma membrane. Structural and biochemical analyses reveal that DOCK8 DHR-1 domain consists of a C2 domain-like core with loops creating the upper surface pocket, where three basic residues are located for stereospecific recognition of phosphoinositides. Substitution of the two basic residues, K576 and R581, with alanine abolished PI(4,5)P2 binding in vitro, ablated the ability of DOCK8 to activate Cdc42 and support leukocyte migration in three-dimensional collagen gels. Dendritic cells carrying the mutation exhibited defective interstitial migration in vivo. Thus, our study uncovers a critical role of DOCK8 in coupling PI(4,5)P2 signaling with Cdc42 activation for immune regulation.SET8 is solely responsible for histone H4 lysine-20 (H4K20) monomethylation, which preferentially occurs in nucleosomal H4. However, the underlying mechanism by which SET8 specifically promotes the H4K20 monomethylation in the nucleosome has not been elucidated. In the complexes with H3 and CENP-A nucleosomes, SET8 specifically binds the nucleosomal acidic patch via an arginine anchor, composed of the Arg188 and Arg192 residues. Mutational analyses revealed that the interaction between the SET8 arginine anchor and the nucleosomal acidic patch plays an essential role in the H4K20 monomethylation activity. These results provide the groundwork for understanding the mechanism by which SET8 specifically accomplishes the H4K20 monomethylation in the nucleosome.Compensatory growth of organs after loss of their mass and/or function is controlled by hepatocyte growth factor (HGF), but the underlying regulatory mechanisms remain elusive. Here, we show that CUB domain-containing protein 1 (CDCP1) promotes HGF-induced compensatory renal growth. Using canine kidney cells as a model of renal tubules, we found that HGF-induced temporal up-regulation of Src activity and its scaffold protein, CDCP1, and that the ablation of CDCP1 robustly abrogated HGF-induced phenotypic changes, such as morphological changes and cell growth/proliferation. Mechanistic analyses revealed that up-regulated CDCP1 recruits Src into lipid rafts to activate STAT3 associated with the HGF receptor Met, and activated STAT3 induces the expression of matrix metalloproteinases and mitogenic factors. After unilateral nephrectomy in ****, the Met-STAT3 signaling is transiently up-regulated in the renal tubules of the remaining kidney, whereas CDCP1 ablation attenuates regenerative signaling and significantly suppresses compensatory growth. These findings demonstrate that CDCP1 plays a crucial role in controlling compensatory renal growth by focally and temporally integrating Src and Met signaling.
    To compare the efficacy of aflibercept using a personalised versus fixed regimen in treatment-naïve participants with polypoidal choroidal vasculopathy (PCV).

    A 52-week, randomised, open-label, non-inferiority, single-centre study that included participants with symptomatic PCV. Participants were randomised (31 ratio) to receive either personalised (n=40) or fixed 8-weekly treatment regimen (n=13). The personalised regimen allowed for either early treat and extend (T&E) after week 12 or late T&E with 3 additional 4-weekly aflibercept injections until week 24 in participants with residual polypoidal lesions (PL) on indocyanine green angiography (ICGA) at week 12.

    To determine anterior chamber tap cytology characteristics in acute postoperative bacterial endophthalmitis.

    488 eyes of 488 patients were included in this retrospective case-control study. The study group included 93 eyes with bacteriologically documented endophthalmitis and 85 eyes with clinical endophthalmitis. The control group included 33 eyes with non-infectious postoperative inflammation, 116 eyes with acute uveitis and 161 cataract surgery eyes with no ocular inflammation. Cytological analysis, direct examination and microbiological cultures were performed in aqueous humour (AqH) samples. Inclusion criteria for the study group were the following suspected endophthalmitis within 30 days following cataract surgery by phacoemulsification, secondary lens implantation, pars plana vitrectomy or intravitreal injection; best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA) <20/400; hypopyon or cyclitic membrane; absence of visibility of the retina; vitritis at a slit-lamp examination or in ultrasound B-scan.

Mutational analyses revealed that the interaction between the SET8 arginine anchor and the nucleosomal acidic patch plays an essential role in the H4K20 monomethylation activity. Here, we show that CUB domain-containing protein 1 (CDCP1) promotes HGF-induced compensatory renal growth. Using canine kidney cells as a model of renal tubules, we found that HGF-induced temporal up-regulation of Src activity and its scaffold protein, CDCP1, and that the ablation of CDCP1 robustly abrogated HGF-induced phenotypic changes, such as morphological changes and cell growth/proliferation. Mechanistic analyses revealed that up-regulated CDCP1 recruits Src into lipid rafts to activate STAT3 associated with the HGF receptor Met, and activated STAT3 induces the expression of matrix metalloproteinases and mitogenic factors. After unilateral nephrectomy in mice, the Met-STAT3 signaling is transiently up-regulated in the renal tubules of the remaining kidney, whereas CDCP1 ablation attenuates regenerative signaling and significantly suppresses compensatory growth. These findings demonstrate that CDCP1 plays a crucial role in controlling compensatory renal growth by focally and temporally integrating Src and Met signaling. To compare the efficacy of aflibercept using a personalised versus fixed regimen in treatment-naïve participants with polypoidal choroidal vasculopathy (PCV). A 52-week, randomised, open-label, non-inferiority, single-centre study that included participants with symptomatic PCV. Participants were randomised (31 ratio) to receive either personalised (n=40) or fixed 8-weekly treatment regimen (n=13). The personalised regimen allowed for either early treat and extend (T&E) after week 12 or late T&E with 3 additional 4-weekly aflibercept injections until week 24 in participants with residual polypoidal lesions (PL) on indocyanine green angiography (ICGA) at week 12. This review also confers information about the biological activities of quinoline derivatives such as antibacterial, antifungal, antimycobacterial, antiviral, anti-protozoal, antimalarial, anticancer, cardiovascular, CNS effects, antioxidant, anticonvulsant, analgesic, anti-inflammatory, anthelmintic and miscellaneous activities.Ocular diseases may be treated via different routes of administration, such as topical, intracameral, intravitreal, oral and parenteral. Among them the topical route is most accepted by patients, although it provides in many cases the lowest bioavailability. Indeed, when a topical formulation reaches the precorneal area, i.e., the drug absorption and/or action site, it is rapidly eliminated due to eye protection mechanisms such as blinking, basal and reflex tearing, and naso-lacrimal draining. To avoid this and to reduce the frequency of dosing, various strategies have been developed to prolong drug residence time after topical administration. These strategies include the use of viscosity increasing and mucoadhesive excipients as well as combinations thereof. From the drug delivery system point of view, liquid and semisolid formulations are preferred over solid formulations such as ocular inserts and contact lenses. Furthermore, liquid and semisolid formulations can contain nano- and microcarrier systems that contribute to a prolonged residence time. Within this review an overview about the different types of excipients and formulations as well as their performance in valid animal models and clinical trials is provided.
    CRANIAL (CSF Rhinorrhoea After Endonasal Intervention to the Skull Base) is a prospective multicenter observational study seeking to determine 1) the scope of skull base repair methods used and 2) corresponding rates of postoperative cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) rhinorrhea in the endonasal transsphenoidal approach (TSA) and the expanded endonasal approach (EEA) for skull base tumors. We sought to pilot the project, assessing the feasibility and acceptability by gathering preliminary data.

    A prospective observational cohort study was piloted at 12 tertiary neurosurgical units in the United Kingdom. Feedback regarding project positives and challenges were qualitatively analyzed.

    A total of 187 cases were included 159 TSA (85%) and 28 EEA (15%). The most common diseases included pituitary adenomas (n= 142/187), craniopharyngiomas (n= 13/187). and skull base meningiomas (n= 4/187). Evidence regarding efficiency of this surgery is still incomplete, especially in patients undergoing primary decompressive craniectomy with evacuation of traumatic mass lesions.

    Aplastic or twiglike middle cerebral artery (Ap/T-MCA) is a rare cerebrovascular anomaly correlated to stroke. The most common characteristic of the disease is intracerebral hemorrhage. However, treatment measures that can prevent rebleeding have not yet been established.

    We sought to validate whether extracranial-intracranial (EC-IC) bypass is effective in preventing recurrent intracerebral hemorrhage in patients with Ap/T-MCA.

    Ap/T-MCA was defined on the basis of the following criteria 1) M1 occlusion with plexiform vessels, 2) unilateral MCA involvement without progression to the contralateral side, 3) no significant stenosis in the M2 segment, and 4) no stenoocclusive lesions in other intracranial major arteries. The clinical features, surgical procedures, radiologic changes, and treatment outcomes of patients with Ap/T-MCA who presented with ipsilateral intracerebral hemorrhage at our institution from April 2004 to December 2019 were retrospectively reviewed.

Most radial artery pseudoaneurysms occur as a result of catheterization; however, any traumatic event that damages the vessel can lead to a symptomatic pseudoaneurysm. This report presents a case of an unusual late presentation of clinical symptoms associated with a pseudoaneurysm of the radial artery after arthroplasty of the thumb carpometacarpal joint.
    To compare the maximum interfragmentary displacement of short oblique proximal phalanx (P1) fractures fixed with an intramedullary headless compression screw (IMHCS) versus a plate-and-screws construct in a cadaveric model that generates finger motion via the flexor and extensor tendons of the fingers.

    We created a 30° oblique cut in 24 P1s of the index, middle, ring, and little fingers for 3 matched pairs of cadaveric hands. Twelve fractures were stabilized with an IMHCS using an antegrade, dorsal articular margin technique at the P1 base. The 12 matched-pair P1 fractures were stabilized with a radially placed 2.0-mm plate with 2 bicortical nonlocking screws on each side of the fracture. Hands were mounted to a frame allowing a computer-controlled, motor-driven, linear actuator powered movement of fingers via the flexor and extensor tendons. All fingers underwent 2,000 full-flexion and extension cycles. Maximum interfragmentary displacement was continuously measured using a differential variable reluctance transducer.

    The observed mean displacement differences between IMHCS and plate-and-screws fixation was not statistically significant throughout all time points during the 2,000 cycles. A 2 one-sided test procedure for paired samples confirmed statistical equivalence in fracture displacement between fixation methods at the final 2,000-cycle time point.

    The IMHCS provided biomechanical stability equivalent to plate-and-screws for short oblique P1 fractures at the 2,000-cycle mark in this cadaveric model.

    The aim of this study was to report the outcomes of surgery using the Bain and Begg articular-based classification for the treatment of Kienböck disease.

    We identified and followed patients who had surgery for Kienböck disease between 1995 and 2014. Assessment included functional scoring using a modification of the Gartland and Werley score, pain levels, and grip strength.

    Thirty-one patients were operated on for Kienböck disease between 1995 and 2014. Twenty-seven patients were assessed (12 men and 15 women). Mean age at the index procedure was 45.1 years (range, 20-82 years). Median follow-up after the index procedure was 10 years (range, 2-18 years). On the Bain and Begg classification, 5 patients had grade 0, 4 had grade 1, 5 had grade 2a, 10 had grade 2b, 1 had grade 3, and 1 had grade 4. The median pain visual analog scale improved from a preoperative score of 5 (interquartile range [IQR], 5-6) to a postoperative score of 2 (IQR, 0-3). The median functional scores from the modified Gartland and Werley score improved from 67 (IQR, 57.0-78.5) to 97 (IQR, 90.0-97.0). Eighteen out of 20 working patients returned to the same level of work. There was a significant improvement in power grip and tip pinch following surgery. One patient required a secondary salvage procedure. No patient required a full wrist fusion or arthroplasty.

    This study confirms that the Bain and Begg arthroscopic classification and an articular-based approach to Kienböck disease provide a high probability of good long-term relief of pain and a minimal chance of requiring a salvage procedure.

    Prior studies evaluated the impact of insurance type on access to hand care. However, there is limited literature quantifying whether patient symptoms are worse at the time of intervention. Our primary null hypothesis was that insurance type would not be associated with Patient-Reported Outcomes Measure Information System (PROMIS) Upper-Extremity (UE), Physical Function (PF), Pain Interference (PI), and Depression scores at the preoperative visit before carpal tunnel release (CTR).

    Between December 2016 and November 2018, patients with known carpal tunnel syndrome presenting to a tertiary academic hand clinic for the preoperative visit within 3 months of CTR, completed PROMIS UE, PF, PI, and Depression computer adaptive tests. Patient characteristics were recorded, including insurance type as commercial, Medicare, Medicaid, or workers' compensation. Multivariable linear regression was used to determine which variables were associated with PROMIS scores at the preoperative visit before CTR.

    A total of 301 patients were included in the analysis. All PROMIS domains were significantly different by insurance type; Medicaid patients had the worst preoperative score for all domains in bivariate analysis. In multivariable linear regression modeling, commercial insurance was associated with better preoperative PROMIS UE, PF, PI, and Depression scores.

    Commercial insurance is associated with significantly better preoperative PROMIS PF, PI, and Depression scores compared with other insurance types (ie, Medicaid, Medicare, and Workers' compensation). This may be the result of a number of factors, including differences in access to hand care or life circumstances that allow for only certain individuals to seek hand care early on in the disease process. However, further research is warranted to determine more definitively why this association exists.

The median functional scores from the modified Gartland and Werley score improved from 67 (IQR, 57.0-78.5) to 97 (IQR, 90.0-97.0). Eighteen out of 20 working patients returned to the same level of work. There was a significant improvement in power grip and tip pinch following surgery. One patient required a secondary salvage procedure. No patient required a full wrist fusion or arthroplasty. This study confirms that the Bain and Begg arthroscopic classification and an articular-based approach to Kienböck disease provide a high probability of good long-term relief of pain and a minimal chance of requiring a salvage procedure. However, there is limited literature quantifying whether patient symptoms are worse at the time of intervention. Our primary null hypothesis was that insurance type would not be associated with Patient-Reported Outcomes Measure Information System (PROMIS) Upper-Extremity (UE), Physical Function (PF), Pain Interference (PI), and Depression scores at the preoperative visit before carpal tunnel release (CTR). Between December 2016 and November 2018, patients with known carpal tunnel syndrome presenting to a tertiary academic hand clinic for the preoperative visit within 3 months of CTR, completed PROMIS UE, PF, PI, and Depression computer adaptive tests. Patient characteristics were recorded, including insurance type as commercial, Medicare, Medicaid, or workers' compensation. Multivariable linear regression was used to determine which variables were associated with PROMIS scores at the preoperative visit before CTR. A total of 301 patients were included in the analysis. All PROMIS domains were significantly different by insurance type; Medicaid patients had the worst preoperative score for all domains in bivariate analysis. In multivariable linear regression modeling, commercial insurance was associated with better preoperative PROMIS UE, PF, PI, and Depression scores. Commercial insurance is associated with significantly better preoperative PROMIS PF, PI, and Depression scores compared with other insurance types (ie, Medicaid, Medicare, and Workers' compensation). This may be the result of a number of factors, including differences in access to hand care or life circumstances that allow for only certain individuals to seek hand care early on in the disease process. Patients with distal humeral fractures treated with TEA and a minimum of 2 years' follow-up were reviewed. Demographic information, patient-reported outcome, functional and radiographic outcome assessments, and complications were reported. Forty patients met inclusion criteria; 35 were female. Median follow-up was 4 years (range, 2-13 years). Average age of patients at the index procedure was 79 ± 9 years. All implants were linked. Range of motion was extension 16° ± 13°, flexion 127° ± 14°, supination 79° ± 11°, and pronation 73° ± 20°. Patient-reported outcome scores were Patient-Rated Elbow Evaluation 37 ± 35, Quick-Disabilities of the Arm, Shoulder, and Hand 31 ± 31, and Mayo Elbow Performance Index 90 ± 18.

  • A previous study reported an observed unidentified graphite/hexagonal boron nitride (hBN) superlattice structure in special multilayer heterojunction devices via cross-sectional transmission electron microscopy [Haigh S. J. et al., Nat. Mater. 2012, 11, 764-767]. In this letter, we designed and confirmed two possible graphite/hBN superlattice structures (AA and Ab), which were probably the structures observed by the aforementioned experiment. The formation enthalpies of both structures were negative, indicating that they could be successfully synthesized as the previous experiment reported. The results also showed that both structures possessed dynamic stability and elastic stability. Importantly, the theoretical interlayer distances of AA and Ab were 3.34 and 3.30 Å, respectively, which were consistent with the experimental value of 3.32 Å. The X-ray diffraction patterns and Raman spectra of both structures were simulated to aid in distinguishing them. Mass spectra recorded from quinoline derived from [2-13C1]tryptophan-fed insects indicated that the α-carbon atom of tryptophan is incorporated as the C-2 atom of the quinoline ring.We report an efficient catalytic protocol that chemoselectively reduces nitroarenes to arylamines, by using methylhydrazine as a reducing agent in combination with the easily synthesized and robust catalyst tris(N-heterocyclic thioamidate) Co(III) complex [Co(κS,N-tfmp2S)3], tfmp2S = 4-(trifluoromethyl)-pyrimidine-2-thiolate. A series of arylamines and heterocyclic amines were formed in excellent yields and chemoselectivity. High conversion yields of nitroarenes into the corresponding amines were observed by using polar protic solvents, such as MeOH and i PrOH. Among several hydrogen donors that were examined, methylhydrazine demonstrated the best performance. Preliminary mechanistic investigations, supported by UV-vis and NMR spectroscopy, cyclic voltammetry, and high-resolution mass spectrometry, suggest a cooperative action of methylhydrazine and [Co(κS,N-tfmp2S)3] via a coordination activation pathway that leads to the formation of a reduced cobalt species, responsible for the catalytic transformation. In general, the corresponding N-arylhydroxylamines were identified as the sole intermediates. Nevertheless, the corresponding nitrosoarenes can also be formed as intermediates, which, however, are rapidly transformed into the desired arylamines in the presence of methylhydrazine through a noncatalytic path. On the basis of the observed high chemoselectivity and yields, and the fast and clean reaction processes, the present catalytic system [Co(κS,N-tfmp2S)3]/MeNHNH2 shows promise for the efficient synthesis of aromatic amines that could find various industrial applications.The bulk photovoltaic effect in noncentrosymmetric materials is an intriguing physical phenomenon that holds potential for high-efficiency energy harvesting. Here, we study the shift current bulk photovoltaic effect in the transition-metal dichalcogenide MoS2. We present a simple automated method to guide materials design and use it to uncover a distortion to monolayer 2H-MoS2 that dramatically enhances the integrated shift current. Using this distortion, we show that overlap in the Brillouin zone of the distributions of the shift vector (a quantity measuring the net displacement in real space of coherent wave packets during excitation) and the transition intensity is crucial for increasing the shift current. The distortion pattern is related to the material polarization and can be realized through an applied electric field via the converse piezoelectric effect. This finding suggests an additional method for engineering the shift current response of materials to augment previously reported methods using mechanical strain.In this study, the thermal, mechanical, and chemical equilibrium conditions are derived for binary solid-liquid equilibrium under the effect of an electric field. As an example, the effect of an electric field on the water/glycerol solid-liquid phase diagram is computed over the complete mole fraction range. We show that the application of an electric field can affect the composition dependent freezing and precipitating processes, changing freezing and precipitating temperatures and changing the eutectic point temperature and mole fraction.Nitrosyl metal complexes (M-NO), in which nitrosyl ligands are coordinated to transition-metal ions, have been studied from the viewpoints of physiological activity, catalytic activity, and photosensitivity. The structural flexibility and electric polarization of the nitrosyl ligand are attractive characteristics. Herein we show a photoswitchable nonlinear-optical (NLO) crystal based on a dysprosium-iron nitrosyl assembly. This crystal is composed of a one-dimensional chain structure in the polar Pna21 space group. Because of spontaneous electric polarization, it exhibits a NLO effect of second harmonic generation (SHG). The SHG signal reversibly changes by alternate irradiation with 473 and 804 nm laser lights. The observed photoreversible switching effect on SHG is caused by photoinduced linkage isomerization of the metal nitrosyl sites, i.e., M-N+═O ↔ M-O═N+. Such an optically switchable NLO crystal should be useful for optical devices such as optical filters and optical shutters as well as probes in SHG microscopy.In this research, six neonicotinoid analogs derived from l-proline were synthesized, characterized, and evaluated as insecticides against Xyleborus affinis. Most of the target compounds showed good to excellent insecticidal activity. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first report dealing with the use of enantiopure l-proline to get neonicotinoids. These results highlighted the compound 9 as an excellent candidate used as the lead chiral insecticide for future development. Additionally, molecular docking with the receptor and compound 9 was carried out to gain insight into its high activity when compared to dinotefuran. Finally, the neurotoxic evaluation of compound 9 showed lower toxicity than the classic neonicotinoid dinotefuran.
