After adjusting for confounders; compared to NTH, the odds ratio for mortality for popliteal artery injuries in the CTH group was significantly higher (OR 15.95, 95% CI 1.19-213.84), and for the UTH group the mortality was also significantly higher (OR 5.74, 95% CI 0.45-72.95).

Our study aimed to validate the efficacy of automatic retention pressure control of the DLT bronchial cuff in maintaining OLV in an artificial intubation model.

    A 35-Fr left-sided DLT was intubated to the left main bronchus in an intubation simulator and connected to an anesthesia machine. The inspiratory volume, respiratory rate, and inspiratory-expiratory ratio were set at 500mL, 12 times/min, and 12, respectively. A 1-kg right main bronchial traction in the lateral right was provided after OLV was established. SmartCuff (Smiths Medical, Minneapolis, Minnesota, USA) was used to maintain cuff pressure. The efficacy of retention pressure with SmartCuff (Group S) and without SmartCuff (Group WS) was compared.     To improve surgical performance, image-guided (IG) technologies are increasingly introduced. Yet, it is unknown which oncological procedures yield most value from these technologies. This study aimed to select the most promising IG technology per oncologic indication.

    An Analytic Hierarchical Process was used to evaluate three IG technologies navigation, optical imaging, and augmented reality, in five oncologic indications compared with usual care. Sixteen decision criteria were selected. The relative importance of the criteria and the expected performance of the technologies were evaluated among surgeons. The combination of these scores gives the expected value per technology.

    On criteria level, sparing critical tissue (9%-18%) and reducing the risk of local recurrence (11%-27%) were most important. Navigation was preferred in three indications-removal of lymph nodes (42%), liver (47%), and rectal tumors (33%).   • Global efforts are being made to achieve the clinical implementation of pre-emptive medicine for Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) infectious disease, which will realize both early detection at the pre-symptom stage and bacteriostatic therapy by antibiotic-free medicine in a future. Several research groups proposed the intercellular signal transduction factor (auto-inducing peptide AIP) antibody, the synthesised AIP analogues and a cyclic depsipeptide with high constitutional similarity to AIP as a candidate of the pre-emptive medicine for S. aureus infectious disease. In this paper, to evaluate a validity of them, we mathematically explored both a pre-symptom associated with the pathogenic expression process of S. aureus and several therapeutic targets that delay or suppress the appearance of the pre-symptom. The stochastic mathematical analysis identified a peak of fluctuation in intracellular AgrD concentration as the pre-symptom. Moreover, employing parameter sensitivity analysis, the enhancement of binding inhibition between AgrC receptor and AIP was identified as effective therapeutic target. Based on these findings, we evaluated a feasibility of above-mentioned candidates, and concluded that the continuous application of AgrC receptor antagonists, such as the synthesised AIP analogues and a cyclic depsipeptide with high constitutional similarity to AIP, is useful as pre-emptive medicine for S. aureus infectious disease.The goal of the segmentation of brain images is to separate the images in different non-compatible homogenous areas reflecting the numerous anatomical structures. The variety in technologies for image processing has contributed to the creation in numerous image segmentation techniques. Using regional habitat suitability and linkage models, we calculated movement pathways and the most probable crossing zones in 2009. The prognostic value of these models was tested by comparing the pathway predictions to the real roadkill and roadkill cluster locations in 2002-2009 and 2010-2017. Across both periods and on both highways, the roe deer roadkill locations were significantly closer to the model-predicted pathways than to randomly selected points. The prediction of roadkill locations was also good for wild boar. The roe deer roadkill clusters and multi-species clusters were significantly better represented by the model than by random distribution. On both highways, the biggest differences in distance from the predicted locations were near big cities. The framework was illustrated by an experimental study exposing eleven participants to different nutrition schemes in five consecutive phases. Substantial inter-individual variations in the individual reactions were observed. A new coherence index made it possible to identify 14 instances where the direction of individual changes tended to coincide with the direction of the mean change with more than 95% probability. The heterogeneity in variability across different bacteria species was limited. This allowed us to develop recommendations for sample sizes in future studies. For studies measuring the concentration change of bacteria as a reaction to nutrition change, the use of replications and analysis of the variability is recommended. In order to detect moderate effects of a change in nutrition on the concentration of single bacterial taxa, 30 participants with three repetitions are often adequate. Insights into the relationship between nutrition and the microbial composition can be helpful for the development of dietary habits that promote the establishment of a healthy microbial flora and can therefore prevent the initiation of oral diseases such as caries and periodontitis.

  • Cystic fibrosis is a condition caused by mutations in the cystic fibrosis transmembrane conductance regulator (CFTR). It is also thought to increase the activity of epithelial sodium channels (ENaC). The altered function of these ion channels is one of the causes of the thick dehydrated mucus that characterizes the disease and is partially responsible for recurrent pulmonary infections and inflammation events that ultimately destroy the lungs of affected subjects. Phosphoinositides are signaling lipids that regulate numerous cellular processes and membrane proteins, including ENaC. Inhibition of diacylglycerol kinase (DGK), an enzyme of the phosphoinositide pathway, reduces ENaC function. We propose a computational analysis that is based on the combination of two existing mathematical models one representing the dynamics of phosphoinositides and the other explaining how phosphatidylinositol 4,5-bisphosphate (PI(4,5)P2) influences ENaC activity and, consequently, airway surface liquid. This integrated model permits, for the first time, a detailed assessment of the intricate interactions between DGK and ENaC and is consistent with available literature data. In particular, the computational approach allows comparisons of two competing hypotheses regarding the regulation of ENaC. The results strongly suggest that the regulation of ENaC is primarily exerted through the control of PI(4,5)P2 production by type-I phosphatidylinositol-4-phosphate 5-kinase (PIP5KI), which in turn is controlled by phosphatidic acid (PA), the product of the DGK reaction.Gait modification strategies are effective in reducing knee joint loads, which are associated with the development and progression of knee osteoarthritis (OA). However, the effect of modification of the initial foot contact method in high-loading descending task was not investigated. Here, we show that the initial foot contact strategy significantly alters knee joint moments during descending tasks. We found that the second peak flexion moment was lower for the forefoot strike (FFS) than for the rearfoot strike (RFS) in both stair and ramp descent. As for the peak adduction moment, the second peak was lower for the FFS in stair descent, but two peaks were inconsistent in ramp descent. Our results demonstrate that the knee joint loads can be reduced by simple modification of the initial foot contact strategy. In both descending modalities, the FFS may benefit people with early OA in the patellofemoral joint, whose progression is associated with the peak flexion moment. Likewise, the FFS during stair descent may benefit people with early OA in the medial knee, whose progression is associated with the peak adduction moment. IOP was highest in winter and lowest in summer, at 14.2/13.7 for non-glaucoma without DED group (n = 2,853, P = 0.001), 14.5/13.6 for non-glaucoma with DED group (n = 1,500, P = 0.000), 14.0/13.0 for glaucoma without DED group (n = 240, P = 0.051), and 15.4/12.4 for glaucoma with DED group (n = 115, P = 0.015).     Bronchoalveolar lavage (BAL), is a safe, minimally invasive procedure to sample the terminal airways and the lung parenchyma. Although frequently used, there is lack of contemporary literature regarding the diagnostic utility of BAL for various pulmonary diseases. This study was conducted to evaluate the utility of BAL in diagnosis of various pulmonary pathologies, both infectious and neoplastic.

    This was a retrospective study performed over a period of 2 years. All the BAL samples reported on cytology were studied, their clinical details were retrieved, and the corresponding smears were reviewed. Cyto-histopathologic correlation was done, wherever possible.

    There were a total of 1835 cases (1153 men, 682 women; age, 8 months to 78 years). Of these, 19 (1%) cases were assessed as inadequate for opinion. In 348 (19%) cases, specific infective cause could be identified on BAL cytology alone. Tuberculosis and fungal infections could be diagnosed in 165 (9%) and 178 (9.7%) cases respectively. There were 46 dary malignant lung lesions.
    To evaluate the accuracy of an automated three-dimensional (3D) ultrasound technique compared with manual acquisition of five fetal intracranial measurements.

    A prospective observational study was performed on patients presenting for routine anatomical survey between 18'0-22'6 weeks. After informed consent, each patient received two consecutive ultrasounds of the fetal head by a sonographer and a physician who obtained manual measurements of the biparietal diameter (BPD), head circumference (HC), transcerebellar diameter (TCD), cisterna magna (CM) and posterior horn of the lateral ventricle (Vp), followed by measurements using SonoCNS®. Both providers used the automated application until all five measurements were obtained in a single sweep, or a maximum of three attempts. The accuracy of automated measurements was compared to manual measurements using intraclass coefficients (ICC) by provider type, accounting for patient and ultrasound characteristics.

    Children's burns care in Australasia is performed by paediatric surgeons and by plastic surgeons. The aim was to determine practices regarding the donor site wound (DSW), and to explore any differences by training scheme or nature of unit (paediatric vs. mixed).

Here, we review the emerging mechanisms proposed for the uptake of extracellular tau in neurons and the requirements for the propagation of its pathological conformers, addressing how they gain access to physiological tau monomers in the cytosol. Furthermore, we highlight some of the key mechanistic gaps of the field, which urgently need to be addressed to expand our understanding of tau propagation and lead to the identification of new therapeutic strategies for tauopathies.

Gasoline direct injection (GDI), which is one of the fuel injection technologies extensively used in internal combustion engines, is a viable alternative for port fuel injection technology in premium gasoline (petrol)-run vehicles; furthermore, it provides a better fuel economy, higher thermal efficiency, and greater power output. However, the particulate emissions ejected from modern GDI engines are an environmental and health hazard. As a result, stringent emission legislations are imposed on the production/incorporation of GDI engines. This study reviews the particle masses (PMs) and particle numbers (PNs) of various GDI engines. The backgrounds and highlights of current and future PM emission regulations (Euro 5-6 and China 5-6 GDI engine legislations) are discussed. In addition to the effects of cold-start and oxygenated fuel on PM emissions, this paper also reviews the impacts of engine parameters. Another area of discussion is the particulate filter technology as a solution for pollution control. Concerns about PM emissions from GDI engines are conceptually similar to those about emissions from diesel engines. Finally, this paper discusses the technical and commercial aspects of the use of the particulate matter control technology of GDI engines, such as particulate gasoline filters, as dedicated GDI filtration devices. V.BACKGROUND Few studies have estimated the attributable risk and economic cost of mental disorders (MDs) due to particulate matters with aerodynamic diameter of less then 2.5 μm (PM2.5) exposure in Beijing. OBJECTIVES This study aims to identify the possible correlation between PM2.5 and risk of hospital admissions (HAs) for MDs in Beijing and calculate the attributable risk and economic cost. METHODS A generalized additive model (GAM) with controlling for time trend, meteorological conditions, holidays and day of the week was used to estimate the associations. Stratified analyses were performed by age, gender and season. We further estimated the health and economic burden of HAs for MDs attributable to PM2.5. FINDINGS A total of 17,252 HAs for MDs were collected. A 10 μg/m3 daily increase in PM2.5 was associated with a statistically significant risk increase of 3.55% for HAs for MDs. The effects of PM2.5 exposures on HAs for MDs were more pronounced in males, elderly (≥65 years old) individuals and in cold seasons. Using WHO's air quality guidelines as the reference, 15.12% of HAs and 16.19% of the related medical expenses for MDs were attributed to PM2.5 during the study period. NOVELTY PM2.5 accounts for substantial morbidity and economic burden of MDs for both the society and households, which shows environmental protections are essential to improve mental health status of the population. The adsorption of pharmaceutical substances using carbonaceous materials, such as activated carbon (AC), biochar (**) and hydrochar (HC), has received substantial attention by researchers working on water treatment, due to the simplicity, low-cost and high performance of this process. In order to widen the potentiality of these carbonaceous materials and to overcome some of their limitations, particularly the inefficient separation of powdered formulations from treated water, the incorporation of magnetic nanoparticles has been explored. The recovery of magnetic carbon materials (MCM) from the treated water can be attained by applying an external magnetic field, avoiding inefficient and costly filtration and centrifugation processes, typically applied in the case of non-magnetic carbonaceous adsorbents. In the last ten years, some work has been devoted to the preparation of MCM specifically from AC (MCACM), biochar (MCBCM) and hydrochar (MCHCM). This review aims to present the different aspects of using MCM in water treatment, namely in the removal of pharmaceutical compounds.

  • Understanding the formation of the intracellular protein corona of nanoparticles is essential for a wide range of bio- and nanomedical applications. The innermost layer of the protein corona, the hard corona, directly interacts with the nanoparticle surface, and by shielding the surface, it has a deterministic effect on the intracellular processing of the nanoparticle. The data indicate that the different incubation conditions lead to changes in the nanoparticle processing via different protein-nanoparticle interfacial interactions. Specifically, they suggest that the protein-nanoparticle surface interactions depend mainly on the surface properties of the gold nanoparticles, that is, the ζ-potential and the resulting changes in the hydrophilicity of the nanoparticle surface, and are largely independent of the cell line, the uptake mechanism and intracellular processing, or the extent of the induced cellular stress.Understanding the mechanisms controlling the redox transformation of organic contaminants mediated by biochar is of great significance for application of biochar in remediation of contaminated soils and sediments. Here we investigated the mediation effect of a pine wood-derived biochar (P-char) in comparison with multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MCNTs) and graphite on the reductive dechlorination of hexachloroethane by sulfide. Upon normalization of the mediator's surface area, the reduction rate of hexachloroethane follows an order of P-char less then MCNTs less then graphite. Aqueous polysulfides and polysulfide free radicals were readily produced by reacting sulfide only with P-char, and the supernatant separated from the reaction system could account for 83.4% of the pseudo-kinetic rate constant of hexachloroethane mediated by P-char. In contrast, MCNTs and graphite had weak abilities to produce reactive sulfur species, and the supernatant exhibited very low reduction capability ( less then 20.7%) of hexachloroethane. Electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) analysis demonstrated that the surface quinone moieties on P-char induced the formation of polysulfides and polysulfide free radicals from sulfide by serving as one-electron acceptors. Consistently, polysulfides prepared by reacting elemental sulfur with sulfide showed **** stronger reducing capability compared to sulfide. Thus, the mediation effect of P-char was dominantly attributed to the surface quinone-induced formation of reactive reducing sulfur species, whereas the mediation effect of MCNTs and graphite mainly stemmed from the enhanced electron transfer by the graphitized carbon. These results showed for the first time that surface quinone-induced formation of aqueous reactive sulfur species could control biochar-mediated reductive dechlorination of chloroorganic contaminants by sulfides.Although Ni phosphides are efficient for hydrogen evolution reactions, they are unfavorable for oxygen evolution reactions, so their application in alkaline water electrolysis is limited. In this work, NiP3@CeO2 hybrid nanoparticles are firstly in situ grown on Ni foam (NiP3@CeO2/NF) via a novel controlled phosphating strategy. The NiP3@CeO2/NF catalysts display a fairly small overpotential of 200 mV to achieve a current density of 25 mA cm-2 for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) under alkaline conditions, 110 mV smaller than that of NiO@CeO2/NF. It is noteworthy that the improved electrocatalytic performance of NiP3@CeO2/NF can be attributed to rapid electron transfer and the synergistic catalytic effect of the hybrid material. Density functional theory results demonstrate that NiP3 shows a stronger water adsorption energy than CeO2. Low ppm ATRP (activators (re)generated by electron transfer for atom transfer radical polymerization (A(R)GET ATRP), initiators for continuous activator regeneration atom transfer radical polymerization (ICAR ATRP) and electrochemically mediated atom transfer radical polymerization (eATRP)) is a facile and robust methodology with the advantages of simplicity, eco-friendliness and wide applicability to prepare well-defined polymeric materials. In this work, a controlled polymer brush-type functional nanoprobe is successfully fabricated by functional AGET ATRP and used as a sandwich-type electrochemical immunosensor for precise detection of TMs (alpha-fetoprotein, AFP). Using graphene oxide (GO) as an excellent conductive matrix, a GO-based poly-heterozygosis pyridine nanomaterial (GO@PHPY) is obtained by surface-initiated AGET ATRP and photocatalytic modification. The nanoprobe is assembled using GO@PHPY and a detection antibody (Ab2) to detect AFP, in which Cu(ii) serves as a signal label to coordinate with the pyridyl group. Under optimized conditions, the electrochemical sensor exhibits a good detection effect on AFP, with a detection range of 0.1 pg mL-1 to 100 ng mL-1 and a low detection limit of 0.08 pg mL-1. It is worth noting that the detection platform can be applied to the detection of real human serum samples. Thus, it is a desirable platform for AFP detection in clinical diagnosis and practical applications. Meanwhile, this work proves that designing and constructing functional polymer brushes is one of the most effective methods for developing new materials for analytical scientific applications.

Specifically, they suggest that the protein-nanoparticle surface interactions depend mainly on the surface properties of the gold nanoparticles, that is, the ζ-potential and the resulting changes in the hydrophilicity of the nanoparticle surface, and are largely independent of the cell line, the uptake mechanism and intracellular processing, or the extent of the induced cellular stress.Understanding the mechanisms controlling the redox transformation of organic contaminants mediated by biochar is of great significance for application of biochar in remediation of contaminated soils and sediments. Here we investigated the mediation effect of a pine wood-derived biochar (P-char) in comparison with multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MCNTs) and graphite on the reductive dechlorination of hexachloroethane by sulfide. Upon normalization of the mediator's surface area, the reduction rate of hexachloroethane follows an order of P-char less then MCNTs less then graphite. Aqueous polysulfides and polysulfide free radicals were readily produced by reacting sulfide only with P-char, and the supernatant separated from the reaction system could account for 83.4% of the pseudo-kinetic rate constant of hexachloroethane mediated by P-char. In contrast, MCNTs and graphite had weak abilities to produce reactive sulfur species, and the supernatant exhibited very low reduction capability ( less then 20.7%) of hexachloroethane. Electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) analysis demonstrated that the surface quinone moieties on P-char induced the formation of polysulfides and polysulfide free radicals from sulfide by serving as one-electron acceptors. Consistently, polysulfides prepared by reacting elemental sulfur with sulfide showed much stronger reducing capability compared to sulfide. Thus, the mediation effect of P-char was dominantly attributed to the surface quinone-induced formation of reactive reducing sulfur species, whereas the mediation effect of MCNTs and graphite mainly stemmed from the enhanced electron transfer by the graphitized carbon. These results showed for the first time that surface quinone-induced formation of aqueous reactive sulfur species could control biochar-mediated reductive dechlorination of chloroorganic contaminants by sulfides.Although Ni phosphides are efficient for hydrogen evolution reactions, they are unfavorable for oxygen evolution reactions, so their application in alkaline water electrolysis is limited. In this work, NiP3@CeO2 hybrid nanoparticles are firstly in situ grown on Ni foam (NiP3@CeO2/NF) via a novel controlled phosphating strategy. The NiP3@CeO2/NF catalysts display a fairly small overpotential of 200 mV to achieve a current density of 25 mA cm-2 for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) under alkaline conditions, 110 mV smaller than that of NiO@CeO2/NF. It is noteworthy that the improved electrocatalytic performance of NiP3@CeO2/NF can be attributed to rapid electron transfer and the synergistic catalytic effect of the hybrid material. Density functional theory results demonstrate that NiP3 shows a stronger water adsorption energy than CeO2. In this work, a controlled polymer brush-type functional nanoprobe is successfully fabricated by functional AGET ATRP and used as a sandwich-type electrochemical immunosensor for precise detection of TMs (alpha-fetoprotein, AFP). Using graphene oxide (GO) as an excellent conductive matrix, a GO-based poly-heterozygosis pyridine nanomaterial (GO@PHPY) is obtained by surface-initiated AGET ATRP and photocatalytic modification. The nanoprobe is assembled using GO@PHPY and a detection antibody (Ab2) to detect AFP, in which Cu(ii) serves as a signal label to coordinate with the pyridyl group. Under optimized conditions, the electrochemical sensor exhibits a good detection effect on AFP, with a detection range of 0.1 pg mL-1 to 100 ng mL-1 and a low detection limit of 0.08 pg mL-1. It is worth noting that the detection platform can be applied to the detection of real human serum samples. Thus, it is a desirable platform for AFP detection in clinical diagnosis and practical applications. Meanwhile, this work proves that designing and constructing functional polymer brushes is one of the most effective methods for developing new materials for analytical scientific applications.

  • To assess the reliability and validity of the Quality of Life Assessment in Spina Bifida (QUALAS), children and teenager's versions (QUALAS C and T, respectively). This is the first self-applicable quality of life assessment tool for patients under 13 years of age, which also addresses the issue of urinary and fecal incontinence.

    Two urologists performed the translation of both QUALAS versions. A commission produced a consensus version (Version 2), which was applied as a pilot study to define Version 3. It was then backtranslated into English and compared with the original version for equivalence of concepts. Internal consistency with Cronbach's alpha and the intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC) reproducibility was analyzed after two assessments with an interval from two to four weeks. Convergent and divergent validities between the QUALAS and a generic health-related quality of life questionnaire, the KIDSCREEN-27, were studied through Pearson's correlation.

    The reliability analysis showed good internal consistency for QUALAS-C (α=0.73) and QUALAS-T (α=0.79) and good reproducibility in both questionnaires (QUALAS-C - ICC=0.86; QUALAS-T - ICC=0.92). For QUALAS-C convergent validity, there was a low correlation between its items (r=0.35). In addition, a low correlation was also found in the divergent validity analysis, when compared to the KIDSCREEN-27 (r≤0.33). Convergent and divergent validities of the QUALAS-T questionnaire had similar results r=0.46 and r≤0.49, respectively.

    A narrative review was conducted according to the methodological orientation of the implementation research and through a qualitative approach. Publications from the World Health Organization and the United Nations Children's Fund were selected, as well as publications from the Brazilian Ministry of Health were collected from the Virtual Health Library and from the libraries of the Department of Primary Care's portal and the Brazilian's Institute of Geography and Research.

    Brazil has shown promising results regarding the implementation of breastfeeding protection legislation, the participation of municipalities in community breastfeeding support programs, and the continued evaluation of these programs. However, reports of breastfeeding rates have not been produced every five years and the progress of these indicators is very far from the agreed targets for 2030. There is also a need to improve the number of births in child-friendly hospitals and financial donations for breastfeeding programs.

Tamura-Nei 93 genetic distances were measured between all pairs of sequences, and the network was constructed by inferring putative transmission links (genetic distances ≤ 1.5%). We assessed whether recent infection was associated with clustering within the inferred network. RESULTS Recent infection was detected in 11% (22/194) of newly-diagnosed participants. Out of the participants with sequence data, 60% (9/15) with recent infection clustered compared with 31% (43/139) with chronic infection. Two recent infections belonged to the same cluster. In adjusted analyses, recent infection was associated with years of residence in Tijuana (OR = 1.5; 95%CI 1.01-1.09), cocaine use (past month) (OR = 8.50; 95%CI 1.99-28.17), and ever experiencing sexual abuse (OR = 2.85; 95%CI 1.03-7.85). DISCUSSION A total of 11% of men newly diagnosed with HIV who have sex with men and transgender women in Tijuana were recently infected.   • Angiosarcomas (AS) represent a heterogenous group of tumors with variable clinical presentation. AS share an important morphologic and immunohistochemical overlap with other sarcomas, hence the differential diagnosis is challenging, especially in poorly-differentiated tumors. Although molecular studies provide significant clues, especially in the differential diagnosis with other vascular neoplasms, a thorough hematoxylin and eosin analysis remains an essential tool in AS diagnosis. In this review, we discuss pathological and molecular insights with emphasis on implications for differential diagnosis in cutaneous, breast, soft tissue and visceral AS.Dengue is a mosquito-borne viral disease found in tropical and sub-tropical climates worldwide. Due to globalization and climate change dengue is an increasing global concern. Symptoms typically appear 3-14 days after inoculation by the Aedes mosquito and most commonly manifests as a self-limiting febrile illness. However, in severe dengue, plasma leakage may be profound and result in hemorrhage, disseminated intravascular coagulation and circulatory collapse. The dengue virus may also cause organ dysfunction. Cases of myocarditis, myocardial dysfunction and arrhythmias including atrioventricular block have been reported. Plural wording, indicating a conceptual aggregation (i.e., frequencies) rather than just numerical whole numbers, consistently boosted performance. Icon arrays, in contrast, were helpful only when alongside single-tense information. These results fit more consistently with an ecological rationality view which has long argued that the mind is adapted to work best with frequentist information.Adult semantic memory has been traditionally conceptualized as a relatively static memory system that consists of knowledge about the world, concepts, and symbols. Considerable work in the past few decades has challenged this static view of semantic memory, and instead proposed a more fluid and flexible system that is sensitive to context, task demands, and perceptual and sensorimotor information from the environment. This paper (1) reviews traditional and modern computational models of semantic memory, within the umbrella of network (free association-based), feature (property generation norms-based), and distributional semantic (natural language corpora-based) models, (2) discusses the contribution of these models to important debates in the literature regarding knowledge representation (localist vs. distributed representations) and learning (error-free/Hebbian learning vs. error-driven/predictive learning), and (3) evaluates how modern computational models (neural network, retrieval-based, and topic models) are revisiting the traditional "static" conceptualization of semantic memory and tackling important challenges in semantic modeling such as addressing temporal, contextual, and attentional influences, as well as incorporating grounding and compositionality into semantic representations. The review also identifies new challenges regarding the abundance and availability of data, the generalization of semantic models to other languages, and the role of social interaction and collaboration in language learning and development. However, to be confident in DST outcomes it is imperative that known sources of uncertainty such as sampling and measurement error, model structure, and parameter use are quantified, documented, and addressed throughout the DST set-up, calibration, and validation processes. Here we provide a brief overview of the main sources of uncertainty and methods currently available to quantify uncertainty in DST input and output. We then review 42 existing DSTs that were designed to manage anthropogenic pressures in the Baltic Sea to summarise how and what sources of uncertainties were addressed within planning and assessment tools.

The preparation methods employed in these works are summarized and their attainment in drug-loading capacity, release behavior and cytotoxicity toward cancer cells in the manner of in vitro and in vivo studies are stated. As an essential issue toward the development of a body-friendly system, the biocompatibility and toxicity of the developed drug-delivery systems are discussed. We conclude with the promising perspectives in this emerging field. In this study, we compared seven rhIFNα2b preparations from six manufacturers in China and one in America, as well as four batches of rhIFNα2b preparations from the same manufacturer, measuring IFNα2b variants and site-specific modifications using a developed LC/Q-TOF approach. Six L. monocytogenes strains representing serotypes most commonly associated with cold-smoked salmon (1/2a, 1/2b, and 4b) were initially pre-grown under a number of seafood-relevant conditions and challenged with nisin in growth media modified to represent the characteristics of cold-smoked salmon. The pre-growth conditions with the lowest mean log reduction due to nisin and the highest strain-to-strain variabilitced nisin efficacy against serotype 1/2a and 4b strains, but not against 1/2b strains. In conclusion, pre-exposure to mildly acidic environment, high salt content, and sublethal concentrations of quaternary ammonium compounds, is likely to provide cross-protection against a subsequent nisin treatment of L. monocytogenes on cold-smoked salmon.     This investigation assessed the relationship between falls and mortality among midlife adults using survey data from the Third National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (n = 1,295), linked to the National Death Index. The relationship between recurrent falls (≥2 falls) in the past year and 10-year death rate was assessed using survey-weighted Cox regression.

    Nearly 20 % of adults who died within 10 years of their interview date were recurrent fallers at the time of interview. For women only, recurrent fallers had more than 4-fold increased hazard of death within 10 years compared to non-recurrent fallers (HR = 4.41; 95 % CI2.24,8.68).

    Findings suggest that midlife women are particularly vulnerable to adverse outcomes following recurrent falls. Fall prevention efforts should include efforts targeted at midlife women.
