  • Previous studies have shown that lncRNA NEAT1 and miR-29b are closely associated with repair of the injured spinal cord. However, the mechanism by which lncRNA NEAT1 promotes regeneration after spinal cord injury by regulating miR-29b has not been reported. To explore this mechanism, we established a rat model of spinal cord injury (SCI). The experimental rats were randomly assigned to one of six groups the sham, model, si-NEAT1, miR-29b, si-NEAT1 + negative control and si-NEAT1 + si-miR-29b groups. In addition, the TUNEL assay was employed to study neuronal apoptosis in the anterior horn, and the expression of the apoptotic proteins Bcl-2 and Bax was analysed by western blotting. Finally, the protein expression of GFAP, NCAM, GAP43, and SCG10 was measured by immunohistochemistry and western blotting. BBB scores revealed that decreasing the level of NEAT1 improved the hind limb motor function of the rats by increasing miR-29b expression. H&E and Nissl staining showed that silencing NEAT1 attenuated lesions in the spinal cord and decreased the number of cavities in the injured spinal cord by upregulating miR-29b. Immunohistochemistry and western blotting suggested that silencing NEAT1 significantly downregulated GFAP expression and upregulated GAP43, SCG10 and NCAM expression by inducing overexpression of miR-29b. The TUNEL assay and western blotting also showed that silencing NEAT1 attenuated neuronal apoptosis.
    African-Americans (AAs) have higher rates of inactivity, obesity, and cardiometabolic risk compared to other races/ethnicities. Romantic partners can positively influence health habits, yet whether or not couples have to exercise together in order to adopt regular exercise remains unclear. This study examined whether exercising together influences exercise adherence and cardiometabolic risk in AA couples.

    Nine AA romantic couples (age 62.8 ± 7.7years; body mass index 31.0 ± 4.4kg/m
    ; 6105 ± 1689 average steps/day) completed a 12-week walking (≥ 30min, 3days/week) plus resistance training (RT; 2days/week) pilot intervention. Couples were randomized to either exercise together (ET) or separately (ES). Latina mothers were more likely than other mothers to emphasize behaviors that involve family togetherness and practical help and guidance, and less likely to emphasize verbal affection or promoting independence. Mothers from all groups believed that "correction and discipline" was an important expression of love. The findings contribute to an ecologically sensitive understanding of parenting during adolescence, highlighting similarities as well as differences across ethnic and income groups.
    Rumination syndrome (RS) is often treated in medical settings with 1-2 sessions of diaphragmatic breathing to target reflexive abdominal wall contraction in response to conditioned cues (e.g., food). However, many patients remain symptomatic and require additional behavioral interventions.

    In an attempt to augment diaphragmatic breathing with additional interventions, we tested the proof-of-concept of a comprehensive Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy (CBT) for RS.

    In an uncontrolled trial, adults with RS completed a 5-8 session CBT protocol, delivered by one of two psychology behavioral health providers. CBT included two main phases awareness training and diaphragmatic breathing (Phase 1) and modularized interventions chosen by the therapist and patient to target secondary maintenance mechanisms (Phase 2). At pre-treatment, post-treatment, and 3-month follow-up, participants completed a semi-structured interview on RS symptoms with an independent evaluator.

  • Thus, the present study represents an orchestrated correlation between resistance and defense responses incited by SeNPs against tomato late blight disease, which can be used as nano-biostimulant fungicide in protecting tomato plants.Selenium-containing compounds have emerged as a potentially promising treatment for viral infections and tumor development and dissemination. Selenium per se is often considered as a toxic element with little or no beneficial effects, but considerable advances have been made in the understanding of the complex biology, chemistry and drug delivery of this element, especially when it is included in bioactive molecules. Here, we summarize and critically discuss recent findings in the field of selenium-based applications for the treatment of cancer and viral infections.In recent years, food fraud is a global issue that has raised wide public concern. Mass spectrometry techniques have a significant advantage of qualitatively and quantitatively analyzing food authenticity, especially for highly processed meat products. In this work, a simple and specific, rapid resolution liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) method was developed and validated for the determination of pork content in processed meat products according to internal standard (ISTD) method. To improve the efficiency of sample preparation, simplified bead-beating and enzymolysis process were investigated. In contrast with different heat-stable and specific porcine-peptides, EPITVSSDQMAK, GGPLTAAYR, HDPSLLPWTASYDPGSAK from Carbonic anhydrase 3 proved to have an excellent quantitative ability, thus obtaining good linear relationship and satisfactory recovery. This method was successfully applied to different types of meat products, thus demonstrating that complex mixtures of pork content can be accurately quantified.Calcium phosphate cements (CPCs) have been widely used during the past decades as biocompatible bone substitution in maxillofacial, oral and orthopedic surgery. CPCs are injectable and are chemically resemblant to the mineral phase of native bone. Nevertheless, their low fracture toughness and high brittleness reduce their clinical applicability to weakly loaded bones. Reinforcement of CPC matrix with polymeric fibers can overcome these mechanical drawbacks and significantly enhance their toughness and strength. Such fiber-reinforced calcium phosphate cements (FRCPCs) have the potential to act as advanced bone substitute in load-bearing anatomical sites. This work achieves integrated experimental and numerical characterization of the mechanical properties of FRCPCs under bending and tensile loading. To this end, a 3-D numerical gradient enhanced damage model combined with a dimensionally-reduced fiber model are employed to develop a computational model for material characterization and to simulate the failure process of fiber-reinforced CPC matrix based on experimental data. In addition, an advanced interfacial constitutive law, derived from micromechanical pull-out tests, is used to represent the interaction between the polymeric fiber and CPC matrix. The presented computational model is successfully validated with the experimental results and offers a firm basis for further investigations on the development of numerical and experimental analysis of fiber-reinforced bone cements.
    Two-electrode voltage clamp is a widely used technique for studying ionic currents. However, fast activation kinetics of ion channels are disguised by the capacitive transient during voltage clamp of Xenopus oocytes. The limiting factors of clamp performance include, but are not limited to, amplifier gain, membrane capacitance, and micropipette resistance. Previous work has focused on increasing amplifier gain (e.g.; high performing two-electrode amplifiers) or reducing the membrane capacitance (e.g.; the cut-open technique).

In addition, we aimed to carry out an extensive examination of the reproducibility of the power spectrum and functional connectivity at both the sensor-level and the source-level. We systematically proposed multiple new pipelines by integration source imaging, time-course extraction and network reconstruction.

    Our results revealed that the reproducibility of eyes-closed was slightly higher than that of eyes-open, and the relative power was more repeatable than the absolute power, especially in high-frequency bands. The reproducibility of the sensor-level was higher than that of the source-level, both for power and connectivity. Remarkably, connectivity measures could be separated into two classes according to their reproducibility.

    Although several endoscopic findings of eosinophilic esophagitis (EoE), such as the EoE endoscopic reference score (EREFS), have been reported thus far, these endoscopic findings exhibit low specificity. Furthermore, most of these endoscopic findings were evaluated solely in patients from Western nations. We have recently noted a fragile, protruded mucosal lesion sandwiched between longitudinal furrows (similar to caterpillar tracks) on the esophagus in patients with EoE. We have termed this novel finding the "caterpillar sign". This study evaluated the clinical significance of the caterpillar sign and the EREFS for diagnosis of EoE in Japanese patients.

    We retrospectively analyzed endoscopic images from 165 consecutive patients who underwent tissue collection on suspicion of EoE. We compared the clinical significance between the EREFS and the caterpillar sign.     Neurofilament light chain (NfL) in serum indicates neuro-axonal damage in diseases of the central and peripheral nervous system. Reliable markers to enable early estimation of clinical outcome of intensive care unit (ICU) patients are lacking. The aim of this study was to investigate, whether serum NfL levels are a possible biomarker for prediction of outcome of ICU patients.

    Thirty five patients were prospectively examined from admission to ICU until discharge from the hospital or death. NfL levels were measured longitudinally by a Simoa assay.

    NfL was elevated in all ICU patients and reached its maximum at day 35 of ICU treatment. Outcome determined by modified Rankin Scale at the end of the follow-up period correlated with NfL level at admission, especially in the group of patients with impairment of the central nervous system (n = 25, r = 0.56, p = 0.02).

Maize grain yield response to N, P, and K mineral fertilizer application and economically optimal rates for nitrogen (EORN), phosphorus (EORP), and potassium (EORK) were evaluated on a Ferric Acrisol within the semi-deciduous forest zone of Ghana. The nutrient rates evaluated were N (0, 30, 60, 90, and 120 kg N ha-1), P (0, 30, 60, and 90 kg ha-1 P2O5), and K (0, 30, 60 and 90 kg ha-1 K2O). The treatments were arranged in a randomized complete block with three replications using an incomplete factorial design. Nutrient responses were determined using asymptotic quadratic-plus plateau functions. The best nitrogen rate for all P and K levels was 60 kg ha-1, which gave grain yield of 5 t ha-1. Nitrogen uptake, N agronomic and N recovery efficiencies peaked at 60 kg N ha-1 while N partial factor productivity declined with increasing N application rate. This paper makes a methodological argument in favor of a language-centered approach to open-ended survey data. Given the ubiquity of online surveys in many social science disciplines, the present paper provides an example of how this approach can deepen our understanding of survey responses. We find that news users construct relevance at varying scales, using a number of linguistic strategies of self-reference. Those who said they found the story they saw relevant used pronouns with a different distribution than those who did not, and these differences exceeded chance. In general, those who referred to themselves as members of larger collectivities were more likely to say they found a news story relevant, suggesting that relevance is discursively constructed in part through practices of self-reference.This paper argues for a specific urban planning perspective on smart governance that we call "smart urban governance," which represents a move away from the technocratic way of governing cities often found in smart cities. A framework on smart urban governance is proposed on the basis of three intertwined key components, namely spatial, institutional, and technological components. To test the applicability of the framework, we conducted an international questionnaire survey on smart city projects. We then identified and discursively analyzed two smart city projects-Smart Nation Singapore and Helsinki Smart City-to illustrate how this framework works in practice. The questionnaire survey revealed that smart urban governance varies remarkably As urban issues differ in different contexts, the governance modes and relevant ICT functionalities applied also differ considerably. Moreover, the case analysis indicates that a focus on substantive urban challenges helps to define appropriate modes of governance and develop dedicated technologies that can contribute to solving specific smart city challenges. The analyses of both cases highlight the importance of context (cultural, political, economic, etc.) in analyzing interactions between the components. In this, smart urban governance promotes a sociotechnical way of governing cities in the "smart" era by starting with the urban issue at stake, promoting demand-driven governance modes, and shaping technological intelligence more socially, given the specific context.The objective of this study was to understand the impacts of COVID-19 crisis in agriculture and food systems in Nepal and assess the effectiveness of measures to deal with this crisis. The study draws policy implications, especially for farming systems resilience and the achievement of SDGs 1 and 2. The findings are based on (i) three panel discussions over six months with policy makers and experts working at grassroots to understand and manage the crisis, (ii) key informants' interviews, and (iii) an extensive literature review. Results revealed that the lockdown and transport restrictions have had severe consequences, raising questions on the achievement of SDGs 1 and 2, especially in the already vulnerable regions dependent on food-aid. This crisis has also exposed the strengths and limitations of both subsistence and commercial farming systems in terms of resiliency, offering important lessons for policy makers. Traditional subsistence farming appears to be somewhat resilient, with a potential to contribuoving the productivity through quality inputs and by diversifying, promoting and protecting the indigenous food system, while the latter through sustainable intensification by building reliant supply network linking farming with markets and guarantying the supply of inputs.There is increasing interest in CO2 emissions inequality between and within countries, and concerns about the impacts of COVID-19 on vulnerable groups. In this study, the CO2 emissions inequality based on the different consumption category data of disaggregated income groups in eight developing countries is analyzed with the application of input-output model. We further examine the effects of the COVID-19 outbreak on CO2 emissions inequality based on the hypothetical extraction method, and the results reveal that the outbreak has decreased the CO2 emissions inequality and emissions over time. However, the shared socioeconomic pathway scenario simulation results indicate that long-term CO2 emissions inequality will persist. Targeted poverty elimination measures improve the utility of the low- and lowest-income groups and reduce CO2 emissions inequality. Reducing the excessive consumption on the demand side as well as improving the energy efficiency and increasing the share of renewable energy in the energy consumption on the supply side will provide more informed options to achieve multiple desirable outcomes, such as poverty elimination and climate change mitigation.

    Minimally invasive, thoracoscopic anterior spondylodesis (MIAS) is an established treatment for burst fractures of the thoracolumbar spine. Good restoration of the local sagittal alignment and good functional results have been reported. The aim of this study was to evaluate long-term results of MIAS in patients with incomplete burst fractures and to analyze the influence on global sagittal alignment, clinical outcomes, and adjacent segment degeneration.

    From 2002 to 2003, 18 patients were treated with MIAS for incomplete thoracolumbar burst fractures. Mono-segmental spondylodesis was performed with an iliac crest bone graft and bisegmental spondylodesis with a titanium cage. In this single-center prospective cohort study, 15 patients were available for follow-up (FU) after an average of 12.9 years (12.1-14.4). Seven patients were treated with a combined anterior and posterior instrumentation and eight patients with anterior spondylodesis only. The primary clinical outcome parameter was the Oswestry Disabie 6-year results for the SF36 and VAS spine scores. There was no association between sagittal alignment, clinical outcome scores, and ASD.

    Breast cancer is the most prevalent and among the most deadly cancers in females. Patients with breast cancer have highly variable survival lengths, indicating a need to identify prognostic biomarkers for personalized diagnosis and treatment. With the development of new technologies such as next-generation sequencing, multi-omics information are becoming available for a more thorough evaluation of a patient's condition. In this study, we aim to improve breast cancer overall survival prediction by integrating multi-omics data (e.g., gene expression, DNA methylation, miRNA expression, and copy number variations (CNVs)).

    Motivated by multi-view learning, we propose a novel strategy to integrate multi-omics data for breast cancer survival prediction by applying complementary and consensus principles. The complementary principle assumes each -omics data contains modality-unique information. To preserve such information, we develop a concatenation autoencoder (ConcatAE) that concatenates the hidden features leag multi-omics data. The proposed ConcatAE and CrossAE models can inspire future deep representation-based multi-omics integration techniques. We believe these novel multi-omics integration models can benefit the personalized diagnosis and treatment of breast cancer patients.
    In conclusion, we achieve improved overall survival prediction performance by utilizing either the complementary or consensus information among multi-omics data. The proposed ConcatAE and CrossAE models can inspire future deep representation-based multi-omics integration techniques. We believe these novel multi-omics integration models can benefit the personalized diagnosis and treatment of breast cancer patients.
    To compare the clinicopathologic parameters and oncologic outcomes between type 1 and type 2 papillary renal cell carcinoma (PRCC).

    This study was approved by the review board (NO.XYFY2019-KL032-01). Between 2007 and 2018, 52 consecutive patients who underwent surgery at a single tertiary referral hospital were included. Clinicopathologic and survival data were collected and entered into a database. The Kaplan-Meier method, and univariate and multivariate Cox proportional hazard regression analyses were performed to estimate progression-free survival (PFS) and cancer-specific survival (CSS).

    Of the 52 patients, 24 (46.2%) were diagnosed with type 1 PRCC, and 28 (53.8%) had type 2 PRCC. The mean tumor size was 4.8 ± 2.5 cm. The two subtypes displayed different morphological features foamy macrophages were more common in type 1 PRCC, while eosinophils and microvascular angiolymphatic invasion were more frequent in type 2 PRCC. Type 2 cases showed higher tumor stage and World Health Organization/Internatiosubtypes. Histologic subtype of PRCC is not an independent prognostic factor and only WHO/ISUP grade and tumor size were independent predictors for PFS.

    We searched for studies published after 2014 using MEDLINE, CENTRAL, WEB OF SCIENCE, EBSCO, and TUFTS CEA registry databases that encompass an economic evaluation or consider cost outcome measures of EHR based CDS interventions. Thereupon, we identified best practice application areas and categorized the investigated interventions according to an existing taxonomy of front-end CDS tools.

The study was retrospectively registered in the German Clinical Trials Register ( Nr.00015656 ). Breast cancer is the most prevalent and among the most deadly cancers in females. Patients with breast cancer have highly variable survival lengths, indicating a need to identify prognostic biomarkers for personalized diagnosis and treatment. With the development of new technologies such as next-generation sequencing, multi-omics information are becoming available for a more thorough evaluation of a patient's condition. In this study, we aim to improve breast cancer overall survival prediction by integrating multi-omics data (e.g., gene expression, DNA methylation, miRNA expression, and copy number variations (CNVs)). Motivated by multi-view learning, we propose a novel strategy to integrate multi-omics data for breast cancer survival prediction by applying complementary and consensus principles. The complementary principle assumes each -omics data contains modality-unique information. To preserve such information, we develop a concatenation autoencoder (ConcatAE) that concatenates the hidden features leag multi-omics data. The proposed ConcatAE and CrossAE models can inspire future deep representation-based multi-omics integration techniques. We believe these novel multi-omics integration models can benefit the personalized diagnosis and treatment of breast cancer patients. In conclusion, we achieve improved overall survival prediction performance by utilizing either the complementary or consensus information among multi-omics data. To compare the clinicopathologic parameters and oncologic outcomes between type 1 and type 2 papillary renal cell carcinoma (PRCC). This study was approved by the review board (NO.XYFY2019-KL032-01). Between 2007 and 2018, 52 consecutive patients who underwent surgery at a single tertiary referral hospital were included. Clinicopathologic and survival data were collected and entered into a database. The Kaplan-Meier method, and univariate and multivariate Cox proportional hazard regression analyses were performed to estimate progression-free survival (PFS) and cancer-specific survival (CSS). Of the 52 patients, 24 (46.2%) were diagnosed with type 1 PRCC, and 28 (53.8%) had type 2 PRCC. The mean tumor size was 4.8 ± 2.5 cm. Based on our analysis, we suggest that employment, social, and health protection laws and strategies are needed to promote a positive working environment, and to reduce the impact of caregiving work for Latin American caregivers.Blood flow restoration after primary percutaneous coronary intervention (pPCI) in patients with acute myocardial infarction (AMI) may not always be achieved and could be complicated by the no-reflow phenomenon (NRP). The aim of the current study was to assess the frequency of thrombus aspirations (TAs) and NRPs in patients with AMI and treated with pPCI based on the data collected during a 5-year period in the national ORPKI registry, as well as the frequency of periprocedural strokes and predictors of TA and NRP. This retrospective analysis was performed on prospectively collected data gathered in the Polish National Registry of Percutaneous Coronary Interventions (ORPKI), which covered the period between January 2014 and December 2018, and included 200,991 patients treated due to AMI out of 535,857 patients treated using PCI. Among them, 16,777 patients underwent TA. TA was mainly used in the STEMI subgroup of 14,207 patients (84.8%). The frequency of NRP among AMI patients in the thrombectomy group was 2.75% and in the non-thrombectomy group 0.82%. Predictors of TA and NRP were also assessed using multivariate analysis. The percentage of patients treated with pPCI and with PCI alone increased significantly in all of the three selected groups of patients from 88.7% to 94.3% in the AMI group (p less then 0.001), from 82.3% to 90.3% in the STEMI subgroup (p less then 0.001), and from 96.3% to 98.2% in the NSTEMI subgroup (p less then 0.001) during the analysed period. Respect and integration into the family for whom they work had a buffering effect, mediating the effects of working conditions on health and wellbeing. Based on our analysis, we suggest that employment, social, and health protection laws and strategies are needed to promote a positive working environment, and to reduce the impact of caregiving work for Latin American caregivers.Blood flow restoration after primary percutaneous coronary intervention (pPCI) in patients with acute myocardial infarction (AMI) may not always be achieved and could be complicated by the no-reflow phenomenon (NRP). The aim of the current study was to assess the frequency of thrombus aspirations (TAs) and NRPs in patients with AMI and treated with pPCI based on the data collected during a 5-year period in the national ORPKI registry, as well as the frequency of periprocedural strokes and predictors of TA and NRP. This retrospective analysis was performed on prospectively collected data gathered in the Polish National Registry of Percutaneous Coronary Interventions (ORPKI), which covered the period between January 2014 and December 2018, and included 200,991 patients treated due to AMI out of 535,857 patients treated using PCI. Among them, 16,777 patients underwent TA. TA was mainly used in the STEMI subgroup of 14,207 patients (84.8%). The frequency of NRP among AMI patients in the thrombectomy group was 2.75% and in the non-thrombectomy group 0.82%. Predictors of TA and NRP were also assessed using multivariate analysis. The percentage of patients treated with pPCI and with PCI alone increased significantly in all of the three selected groups of patients from 88.7% to 94.3% in the AMI group (p less then 0.001), from 82.3% to 90.3% in the STEMI subgroup (p less then 0.001), and from 96.3% to 98.2% in the NSTEMI subgroup (p less then 0.001) during the analysed period. NRP occurred more often in the thrombectomy group for the NSTEMI (0.58% vs. 3.07%, p less then 0.05) and STEMI (1.06% vs. 2.69%, p less then 0.05) subgroups. Periprocedural stroke occurred more often in the thrombectomy group in comparison to the non-thrombectomy group with AMI (0.03% vs. 0.01%, p less then 0.05) and the NSTEMI (0.16% vs. 0.02%, p less then 0.05). In conclusion, the frequency of TA has been experiencing a steady decline in recent years, regardless of AMI type, among patients treated with pPCI.The bacterial flagellar filament is an extracellular tubular protein structure that acts as a propeller for bacterial swimming motility. It is connected to the membrane-anchored rotary bacterial flagellar motor through a short hook. The bacterial flagellar filament consists of approximately 20,000 flagellins and can be several micrometers long. In this article, we reviewed the experimental works and models of flagellar filament construction and the recent findings of flagellar filament ejection during the cell cycle. The length-dependent decay of flagellar filament growth data supports the injection-diffusion model. The decay of flagellar growth rate is due to reduced transportation of long-distance diffusion and jamming. However, the filament is not a permeant structure. Several bacterial species actively abandon their flagella under starvation. Flagellum is disassembled when the rod is broken, resulting in an ejection of the filament with a partial rod and hook. The inner membrane component is then diffused on the membrane before further breakdown. These new findings open a new field of bacterial macro-molecule assembly, disassembly, and signal transduction.The barrier layer in Cu technology is essential to prevent Cu from diffusing into the dielectric layer at high temperatures; therefore, it must have a high stability and good adhesion to both Cu and the dielectric layer. In the past three decades, tantalum/tantalum nitride (Ta/TaN) has been widely used as an inter-layer to separate the dielectric layer and the Cu. Therefore, pre-deposition of a Cu seed layer by physical vapor deposition (PVD) or chemical vapor deposition (CVD) is necessary, but the non-uniformity of the Cu seed layer has a devastating effect on the defect-free fill of modern sub-20 or even sub-10 nm Cu technology nodes. New Cu diffusion barrier materials having ultra-thin size, high resistivity and stability are needed for the successful super-fill of trenches at the nanometer scale.

From 2004 to 2018, 325 cases of HAVL were diagnosed in 11 of the 12 municipalities belonging to the of Adamantina microregion. The disease has disseminated to the Northwest and East-Southeast directions, taking place along the Comandante Joao Ribeiro de Barros highway, with higher incidences rates in the municipalities where the highway passes.     The primary aim of the survey was to map the current provision of simulation training within UK and Republic of Ireland (RoI) trauma and orthopaedic (T&O) specialist training programmes to inform future design of a simulation based-curriculum. The secondary aims were to characterize; the types of simulation offered to trainees by stage of training, the sources of funding for simulation, the barriers to providing simulation in training, and to measure current research activity assessing the educational impact of simulation.

    The development of the survey was a collaborative effort between the authors and the British Orthopaedic Association Simulation Group. The survey items were embedded in the Performance and Opportunity Dashboard, which annually audits quality in training across several domains on behalf of the Speciality Advisory Committee (SAC). The survey was sent via email to the 30 training programme directors in March 2019. Unprecedented efforts have been taken worldwide to curb this ongoing global catastrophe that has already resulted in many fatalities. One of the areas that has received little attention amid this turmoil is the disruption to trainee education, particularly in specialties that involve acquisition of procedural skills. Hand surgery in Singapore is a standalone combined programme that relies heavily on dedicated cross-hospital rotations, an extensive didactic curriculum and supervised hands-on training of increasing complexity. All aspects of this training programme have been affected because of the cancellation of elective surgical procedures, suspension of cross-hospital rotations, redeployment of residents, and an unsustainable duty roster. There is a real concern that trainees will not be able to meet their training requirements and suffer serious issues like burnout and depression. The long-term impact of suspending training indefinitely is a severe disruption of essential medical services. This article examines the impact of a global pandemic on trainee education in a demanding surgical speciality. We have outlined strategies to maintain trainee competencies based on the following considerations 1) the safety and wellbeing of trainees is paramount; 2) resource utilization must be thoroughly rationalized; 3) technology and innovative learning methods must supplant traditional teaching methods; and 4) the changes implemented must be sustainable. Non-urgent outpatient orthopaedic activity and elective surgery was also suspended. A training programme for healthcare personnel started immediately. Orthopaedic and radiological pathways dedicated to COVID-19 patients, or with possible infection, have been established. In our orthopaedic department, we passed from 70 to 26 beds. Our goal is to treat trauma surgery's patient in the "golden 72 hours" in order to reduce the overall hospital length of stay. We applied an objective priority system to manage the flow of surgical procedures in the emergency room based on clinical outcomes and guidelines. Patient preparation for emergency surgeries, indications, and contraindications of emergency surgeries, operating room preparation, infection control precautions and personal protective equipments (PPE), anesthesia management, intraoperative procedures, postoperative management, medical waste disposal, and surveillance of healthcare workers were reviewed. It should be safe for surgeons with PPE of protection level 2 to perform spinal surgeries on patients with COVID-19. As spine surgeons, it is our responsibility to ensure appropriate treatment to the patients with COVID-19 and spinal diseases. A protocol for spinal surgery and related management on patients with COVID-19 has been reviewed. Patient preparation for emergency surgeries, indications, and contraindications of emergency surgeries, operating room preparation, infection control precautions and personal protective equipments (PPE), anesthesia management, intraoperative procedures, postoperative management, medical waste disposal, and surveillance of healthcare workers were reviewed. It should be safe for surgeons with PPE of protection level 2 to perform spinal surgeries on patients with COVID-19. Standardized and careful surgical procedures should be necessary to reduce the exposure to COVID-19.
