Therefore, we speculated that water-relation factors are the leaf δ13C determinant of macrophytes in the arid zone of northwestern China, and the main factors affecting leaf δ15N values are the complex combination of water and energy factors.Identification of fossil corals is often limited due to poor preservation of external skeleton morphology, especially in the genus Acropora which is widespread across the Indo-Pacific. Based on skeleton characteristics from thin section, we here develop a link between the internal skeleton structure and external morphology. Ten characteristics were summarized to distinguish Acropora and five related genera, including the type and differentiation of corallites, the skeleton nature of corallites (septa, columellae, dissepiments, wall), and calcification centers within septa. Acropora is distinctive for its dimorphic corallites axial and radial. Isopora is similar to Acropora but possess more than a single axial corallites. Montipora and Astreopora (family Acroporidae) have monomorphic corallites and a synapticular ring wall, with clustered calcification center in the former and medial lines in the latter. Pocillopora and Porties are classified by distinctive dissepiments, columellae and septa. These microstructural skeleton characteristics were effective in the genus identification of fossil corals from drilled cores in the South China Sea. Eighteen detailed characteristics (ten of axial corallites, four of radial corallites, and four of coenosteum) were used in the Acropora species classification. The axial corallites size and structure (including corallite diameter, synapticular rings, and septa), the septa of radial corallites, and the arrangement of coenosteum were critical indicators for species identification. This identification guide can help paleoenvironmental and paleoecological analyses and modern coral reef conservation and restoration.Adjusting the composition of their nests, breeding birds can influence the environmental conditions that eggs and offspring experience. Birds often use feathers to build nests, presumably due to their insulating properties. The amount of feathers in nests is often associated with increased nestling survival and body condition. Specifically, we investigate whether the effect of weather conditions on breeding success is modulated by the amount of feathers added to the nest. We found a strong negative effect of rainfall on the number of nestlings that successfully fledged per breeding attempt, but this negative effect was not mitigated by the amount of feathers in nests. To assess whether genetically diverse colonies were better able to survive exposure to diverse pathogens, we challenged groups of termite workers with two strains of a pathogenic fungus, one local strain present in the soil surrounding sampled colonies and another naïve strain, collected outside the range of this species. We found natural variation in the level of inbreeding between colonies, but this variation did not explain differences in susceptibility to either pathogen. Although the naïve strain was found to be more hazardous than the local strain, colony resistance was correlated between two strains, meaning that colonies had either relatively high or low susceptibility to both strains regardless of their inbreeding coefficient. Overall, our findings may reflect differential virulence between the strains, immune priming of the colonies via prior exposure to the local strain, or a coevolved resistance toward this strain. They also suggest that colony survival may rely more upon additional factors, such as different behavioral response thresholds or the influence of a specific genetic background, rather than the overall genetic diversity of the colony.Extra-pair behavior is present in 76% of socially monogamous bird species with biparental care. This behavior may produce costs to females related to a reduction in paternal care. We estimated the percentage of extra-pair offspring and quantified paternal care in 44 nests of Thorn-tailed Rayadito (Aphrastura spinicauda) to assess whether males reduce their parental care when females obtain extra-pair fertilizations. We used data from a sub-Antarctic population of Rayadito located on Navarino Island (55°4'S, 67°40'W), southern Chile. We found no statistical support for a relationship between variation in paternal care and the percentage of extra-pair offspring. We discuss how the inability of breeding males to assess their genetic paternity and potential restrictions on behavioral flexibility may explain this result. Additionally, if paternal care is subjected to sexual selection, this could limit a facultative response to female extra-pair behavior by males. Finally, it is possible that a reduction in paternal care might not have evolved in this particular locality given the low frequency of extra-pair paternity in our study population.

Transwell migration and MTS findings showed that si-SphK1 transfection (si-SphK1 group) could reduce migration quantity and cell viability of colon cancer cells compared to negative control (NC) (p<0.0001). SphK1 inhibition (si-SphK1 group) significantly down-regulated S1PR1 and S1PR3 gene transcription in SW480 and HT-29 cells (p<0.0001), and decreased activation level of JAKSTAT3 signaling pathway compared to NC group (p<0.05). Zanthoxylum bungeanum seed oil (ZBSO) is a main extract of the edible drug Zanthoxylum bungeanum seeds. Recently reports proved that it has a significant cytotoxic effect on various cancer cells. However, systematic investigation on the roles of ZBSO in laryngeal carcinoma (LC) is rare.
To reveal the function of ZBSO on human laryngeal squamous carcinoma cells (Hep-2) and to elucidate its underlying mechanism.
In this study, the chemical composition analysis of ZBSO was done using Ultra Performance Liquid Chromatography (UPLC), and the anti-tumor effect of ZBSO on Hep-2 cells was evaluated by cell proliferation, apoptosis and cell cycle experiments. qRT-PCR, immunohistochemistry (IHC) and Western blotting were used for mechanistic investigation at the molecular level.
The main compound of ZBSO was identified as polyunsaturated fatty acids. Furthermore, as compared with normal cells, significant inhibitory activities of ZBSO was observed on Hep-2 cells with dose- and time-dependency, which induced apoptosis, blocked cell cycle at the S phase, and inhibited cell proliferation. In addition, IHC results showed difference in the level of protein expression of ZBSO-induced autophagy-related markers. At last, Western blotting results indicated that ZBSO could inhibit the expression and phosphorylation levels of PI3K/AKT/mTOR protein.
The anti-LC effect of ZBSO might be intimately associated with the induction of autophagy and the inhibition of PI3K/AKT/mTOR signaling pathway. ZBSO may be a potential anti-laryngocarcinoma agent.

Thiazolidine-4-one is a promising class of heterocyclic compounds with interesting pharmacological and biological activities, such as anticancer and antibacterial. Therefore, many researchers have synthesized thiazolidine-4-ones and evaluated their biological potential for developing new drugs.
In this study, two novel thiazolidine-4-one derivatives (T1 and T2) were synthesized and evaluated for their antibacterial activity toward Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli and Proteus mirabilis. Also, the cytotoxic activities of compounds T1 and T2 were estimated against MCF-7 (HER2+, ER+ and ER+) and MDA-MB-231 (triple-negative) human breast cancer cell lines. The chemical structure of compounds T1 and T2 was proven using spectral techniques (FT-IR, 1HNMR, and 13C-NMR) and CHN elemental analysis.

The present study evaluated the biological properties of Thottea siliquosa, belonging to the family Aristolochiaceae, which is a traditionally used Ayurvedic plant.
Antioxidant assays carried out were DPPH, FRAP, hydrogen peroxide scavenging, and hemolysis inhibition assay; nitric oxide and lipoxygenase inhibition assays were used for anti-inflammatory studies. Anticancer activity was done using human endometrial and breast cancer cells by MTT assay. Bioactive compounds present in T. siliquosa were identified by LCMS and each was docked with various cancer targets including EGFR, VEGFR, GST, COX2, and Lipooxygenase.
The results of the present study shded fractionation may identify possible bioactive compounds.
The study thus concludes that T. siliquosa showed significant antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and anticancer properties. Further studies together with a bioassay-guided fractionation may identify possible bioactive compounds.
The first case of infection by SARS-CoV-2 (i.e., COVID-19) has been officially recorded by the Italian National Health Service on February 21st, 2020. Lombardy was the first Italian region to be affected by the pandemic. Subsequently, the entire Northern part of Italy recorded a high number of cases, while the South was hit following the migratory waves. On March 8th, the Italian Government has issued a decree that imposed a total lockdown defined as a state of isolation and restricted access in Lombardy and in the other 14 provinces of Northern Italy.
We analyzed the virus trend in the period between February 24th and September 8th, 2020, focusing on Calabria, with regards to the following items new positives, change of total positives and total cases. Furthermore, we included other information, such as the incubation period, symptom resolution period, quarantine period.
On March 27th, the epidemic curve spiked with 101 new positive cases validating the hypothesis that this abnormal event was related to the displacement of non-residents people, living in the Northern part of Italy, to the home regions in the South. The epidemic curve showed a decreasing trend in the period after lockdown proving the effectiveness of this measure. From the end of the lockdown (May 04th) to September 8th, the registered trend was -94.51%. A negative growth rate indicates that the number of new positive cases is lower than the number of healed patients.

In terms of infectious diseases caused by a variety of microorganisms, the ability to promptly and accurately identify the causative agents is the first step on the path to all types of effective management of such infections. Among the various factors that are affecting global bee health, viruses have often been linked to honey bee colony losses and they pose a serious threat to the fraction of agriculture that depends on the service of pollinators. Over the past few decades, PCR-based molecular methods have provided powerful tools for rapid, specific, and sensitive detection and the quantification of difficult-to-grow pathogenic microorganisms such as viruses in honey bees. However, PCR-based methods require nucleic acid extraction and purification, which can be quite laborious and time-consuming and they involve the use of organic solvents and chaotropic agents like phenol and chloroform which are volatile and highly toxic. In response, we developed a novel and non-sacrificial method for detecting viral infections in honey bees. As little as 1 μl of hemolymph was collected from adult workers, larvae, and queens of bee colonies by puncturing the soft inter-tergal integument between the second and third dorsal tergum with a fine glass capillary. The hemolymph was then diluted and subjected to RT-PCR analysis directly. The puncture wound caused by the glass capillary was found to heal automatically and rapidly without any trouble and the lifespan of the experimental workers remained unaffected. Using this method, we detected multiple viruses including Deformed wing virus (DWV), Black queen cell virus (****), and Sacbrood virus (SBV) in infected bees. Furthermore, expressed transcripts that indicate the induction of innate immune response to the virus infections were also detected in the hemolymph of infected bees. The simplicity and cost-effectiveness of this innovative approach will allow it to be a valuable, time-saving, safer, and more environmentally friendly contribution to bee disease management programs.Lumpy skin disease virus (LSDV), sheeppox virus (SPPV) and goatpox (GTPV) virus have been usually grown on primary cells for diagnosis, production and titration purposes. The use of primary cells present several inconvenient, heavy preparation, heterogeneous cell population, non-reproducible viral titration and presence of potential endogenous contaminants. Therefore investigating sensitivity of candidate continuous cell lines is needed. In this study, we compared the above Capripox viruses (CaPVs) sensitivity of primary cells of four origin (heart, skin, testis and kidney), with three cell lines (Vero, OA3.Ts and ESH-L). We tested sensitivity for virus isolation, replication cycle and titration, revealed by cytopathic effect (CPE), immunoenzymatic staining and immunofluorescence. Our results show that ESH-L cells and primary fetal heart cells present the highest sensitivity for CaPVs growth and detection. Vero cells can replicate those viruses but without showing any CPE while the titer obtained on OA3.Ts is lower than primary and ESH-L cells. ESH-L cells are an effective alternative to primary cells use for growing Capripoxviruses and their diagnosis.

This was a prospective observational study performed in a prehospital setting under marine west coast climate conditions. Data from the Emergency Medical Service in Hamburg (Germany) and data from the local weather station were evaluated over a 5-year period. Temperature data were obtained and matched with the associated rescue mission data, which were divided into the following groups 1) alcohol poisoning, 2) opioid poisoning, 3) poisoning by sedatives/hypnotics, multiple drugs, volatile solvents, and other psychoactive substances. Lowess-Regression analysis was performed to assess the relationship between ambient temperature and frequency of severe acute poisoning. Additionally, three temperature ranges were defined in order to compare them with each other with regard to frequency of severe poisoning (<10°C vs. https://www.selleckchem.com/products/kpt-185.html 10-20°C vs. >20°C). The severity of emergencies was assessed using the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics (NACA) scoring system.
In 1535 patients, severe acute alcohol or drug poisoning associated with loss of consciousness, hypotension, and impaired respiratory function was treated (alcohol n=604; opioids n=295; sedatives/hypnotics/multiple drugs n=636). Compared to mild temperatures (10-20°C), the frequency of poisoning increased in all three groups at higher temperatures and decreased at lower temperatures (p<0.01). No significant correlation was found between severity of emergencies and temperature.

The objective of this review article is to highlight the possible mechanisms of HIV/AIDS progression in alcohol users from the perspective of oxidative stress, neuroinflammation, and interruption of energy metabolism. These include the hallmark of sustained immune cell activation and high metabolic energy demand by HIV-1-infected cells in the central nervous system, with at-risk alcohol use. Here, we discussed the point that the increase in energy supply requirement by HIV-1-infected neuroimmune cells as well as the deterrence of nutrient uptake across the blood-brain barrier significantly depletes the energy source and neuro-environment homeostasis in the CNS. We also described the mechanistic idea that comorbidity of HIV-1 infection and alcohol use can cause a metabolic shift and redistribution of energy usage toward HIV-1-infected neuroimmune cells, as shown in neuropathological evidence. Under such an imbalanced neuro-environment, meaningless energy waste is expected in infected cells, along with unnecessary malnutrition in non-infected neuronal cells, which is likely to accelerate HIV neuro-infection progression in alcohol use. Thus, it will be important to consider the factor of nutrients/energy imbalance in formulating treatment strategies to help impede the progression of HIV-1 disease and associated neurological disorders in alcohol use.
In terms of infectious diseases caused by a variety of microorganisms, the ability to promptly and accurately identify the causative agents is the first step on the path to all types of effective management of such infections. Among the various factors that are affecting global bee health, viruses have often been linked to honey bee colony losses and they pose a serious threat to the fraction of agriculture that depends on the service of pollinators. Over the past few decades, PCR-based molecular methods have provided powerful tools for rapid, specific, and sensitive detection and the quantification of difficult-to-grow pathogenic microorganisms such as viruses in honey bees. However, PCR-based methods require nucleic acid extraction and purification, which can be quite laborious and time-consuming and they involve the use of organic solvents and chaotropic agents like phenol and chloroform which are volatile and highly toxic. In response, we developed a novel and non-sacrificial method for detecting viral infections in honey bees. As little as 1 μl of hemolymph was collected from adult workers, larvae, and queens of bee colonies by puncturing the soft inter-tergal integument between the second and third dorsal tergum with a fine glass capillary. The hemolymph was then diluted and subjected to RT-PCR analysis directly. The puncture wound caused by the glass capillary was found to heal automatically and rapidly without any trouble and the lifespan of the experimental workers remained unaffected. Using this method, we detected multiple viruses including Deformed wing virus (DWV), Black queen cell virus (BQCV), and Sacbrood virus (SBV) in infected bees. Furthermore, expressed transcripts that indicate the induction of innate immune response to the virus infections were also detected in the hemolymph of infected bees. The simplicity and cost-effectiveness of this innovative approach will allow it to be a valuable, time-saving, safer, and more environmentally friendly contribution to bee disease management programs.Lumpy skin disease virus (LSDV), sheeppox virus (SPPV) and goatpox (GTPV) virus have been usually grown on primary cells for diagnosis, production and titration purposes. The use of primary cells present several inconvenient, heavy preparation, heterogeneous cell population, non-reproducible viral titration and presence of potential endogenous contaminants. Therefore investigating sensitivity of candidate continuous cell lines is needed. In this study, we compared the above Capripox viruses (CaPVs) sensitivity of primary cells of four origin (heart, skin, testis and kidney), with three cell lines (Vero, OA3.Ts and ESH-L). We tested sensitivity for virus isolation, replication cycle and titration, revealed by cytopathic effect (CPE), immunoenzymatic staining and immunofluorescence. Our results show that ESH-L cells and primary fetal heart cells present the highest sensitivity for CaPVs growth and detection. Vero cells can replicate those viruses but without showing any CPE while the titer obtained on OA3.Ts is lower than primary and ESH-L cells. ESH-L cells are an effective alternative to primary cells use for growing Capripoxviruses and their diagnosis. Personal care products (PCPs) are a group of diverse substances widely used daily for health, beauty, and cleanliness. More than 90% of all PCPs contain the UV-B filter octylmethoxycinnamate (OMC) as a protective function, however, their safety has recently been questioned. The purpose of the present work was to understand how the long-term exposure of UV-filter OMC, used daily by pregnant women, disrupts their vascular homeostasis, altering vascular responses of proteins and channels involved in contractile processes. The long-term effects of 24 h of exposure to OMC (1, 10, and 50 μmol/L) were evaluated on contractile responses of human umbilical arteries (HUA) to serotonin and potassium chloride. Since OMC altered vascular homeostasis of arteries, its vascular mode of action was explored in more detail through the analysis of the activity of cGMP and Ca2+-channels, two pathways involved in their relaxation and contraction, respectively. https://www.selleckchem.com/products/azd1390.html Our findings showed that long-term exposure of UV-filter OMC impaired the main vasorelaxant mechanism of HUA, once OMC altered the vasorelaxant response pattern of sodium nitroprusside and nifedipine. Because all the previous SP trials have been performed just on one, unpolluted soil, the principal aim of this study is to ascertain the effectiveness of SP to simultaneously minimize the bioaccumulation of As and Cd in rice grain even in soils severely polluted by As and/or Cd. Hence, a Carnise rice genotype was cultivated in an open field in i) an unpolluted soil; ii) a soil polluted with 55 mg kg-1 of As; iii) a soil polluted with 40 mg kg-1 of Cd; iv) a soil polluted with 50 mg kg-1 of As and 50 mg kg-1 of Cd. In the worst condition of pollution, the amounts of total As and Cd measured in the kernels using a fully validated ICP-MS method is 90 ± 10 μg kg-1 and 50 ± 20 μg kg-1, respectively, i.e. less than 50% and the 25% of the maximum concentration set for these elements in rice by the European Community (200 μg kg-1 for the inorganic As and the total amount of Cd, respectively). The improved third version of You Only Look Once (YOLOv3) multi-target detection model using data augmentation, the loss function of focal loss, and a method of adjusting the threshold of Intersection over Union (IOU) between candidate bound and ground truth bound has superior target detection performance than methods. We obtained a 95.3% and 91.4% accuracy in identifying aluminum and copper scraps, respectively, and an operation speed of 18 FPS, meeting the real-time requirements of a sorting system. By using the improved YOLOv3 multi-target detection algorithm and equipment operation parameters selected, the accuracy and purity of the separation system exceeded 90%, meeting the needs of actual production.
The main objective of the work is to examine the curvature effects of stenosis/dilatation region pertaining to left coronary artery. The hemodymamic features during the cardiac cycle is thoroughly examined.
A numerical fluid structure interaction model incorporating multi- layered elastic artery wall, non-Newtonian blood viscosity and pulsating boundary conditions is developed. The composite arterial wall consists of a thin layer tunica intima, atheroma and a thick wall. Higher stiffness of atheroma is captured by using higher Young's modulus. The CFD and FSI models are validated with available experimental and analytical data. Computations are done with five different non-Newtonian models and arterial wall with various elasticity levels. The local and time averaged WSS, velocity contours downstream of stenosis, wall pressure and pressure drop during various phases of cardiac cycle are provided in detail.
The influence of non-Newtonian effects of blood viscosity is found to be significant especially at sis. The results from the study may be useful for predicting wall shear stress signatures associated with stenosis/dilatation changes and the management of specific cases.
Colon cancer is a fatal disease, and a comprehensive understanding of the tumor microenvironment (TME) could lead to better risk stratification, prognosis prediction, and therapy management. In this paper, we focused on the automatic evaluation of TME in giga-pixel digital histopathology whole-slide images.
A convolutional neural network is used to recognize nine different content presented in colon cancer whole-slide images. Several implementation details, including the foreground filtering and stain normalization are discussed. Based on the whole-slide segmentation, several TME descriptors are quantified and correlated with the clinical outcome by Kaplan-Meier analysis and Cox regression. Specifically, the stroma, tumor, necrosis, and lymphocyte components are discussed.
We validated the method on colon adenocarcinoma cases from The Cancer Genome Atlas project. The result shows that the stroma is an independent predictor of progression-free interval (PFI) after corrected by age and pathological stage, with a hazard ratio of 1.

The multifunctional photodetector, modulator, and optical bistable switch are achieved in a single device, which greatly reduces the photonic overhead and provides potential applications for future integrated optoelectronics.Inspired by the concept of system-in-a-package (SiP) in electronics, here we report a hybrid microwave photonic receiver prototype by integrating lithium niobate (LiNbO3) dual-parallel phase modulators with silicon nitride (Si3N4) integrated tunable microring filters. In particular, we experimentally characterize these employed key elements and evaluate the down-conversion performance of RF signals from 4-20 GHz to the intermediate frequency. With the advantages of the tunable microwave photonic signal filtering, uniform system performance within a broad operation bandwidth, and low SWaP, the demonstrated hybrid microwave photonic receiver module shows a potential setup to satisfy the requirements of wireless communication systems, phased-array radar systems, and electronic warfare.We introduce an image transform designed to highlight features with high degree of radial symmetry for identification and subpixel localization of particles in microscopy images. The transform is based on analyzing pixel value variations in radial and angular directions. We compare the subpixel localization performance of this algorithm to other common methods based on radial or mirror symmetry (such as fast radial symmetry transform, orientation alignment transform, XCorr, and quadrant interpolation), using both synthetic and experimentally obtained data. We find that in all cases it achieves the same or lower localization error, frequently reaching the theoretical limit.Hyperspectral light detection and ranging (HSL) can acquire the spatial and spectral information simultaneously, which can provide more information than hyperspectral imaging and single band lidar. However, the echo intensity from targets is influenced by incident angle, and relative studies were still limited which result in the effect of incident angle on HSL not being completely understood. In this study, the incident angle effect in the whole band of HSL was analyzed and corrected. Then, five types of vegetation sample with different spectral characteristics were collected at the leaf level. Spectral range changing from 550 to 830 nm with a 1 nm spectral resolution was obtained. Lambert-Beckman model was applied to analyze the effect of the incident angle on the echo intensity. The experimental results demonstrated that the Lambert-Beckman model can efficiently apply in fitting the changing of echo intensity with incidence angle and efficiently eliminate the specular effect of target. In addition, the coefficient of variation ratio is significantly improved compared to the reference target-based model. The results illustrated that, compared to reference target-based model, the Lambert-Beckman model can efficiently explain and correct the incident angle effect with specular reflection in HSL. In addition, it was found that the specular fraction Ks, which is reduced with the increasing of reflectance, is dominating the incident angle effect in the whole band, while roughness m keeps stable at different wavelengths. In this work, we show that these hardware approaches to distortion correction are unnecessary. Instead, we demonstrate how the lensing effect can be computationally corrected by resampling the parallel-beam radon transform into an aberrated geometry. We also demonstrate a more general application of our computational approach by correcting for non-telecentricity inherent in most optical projection systems. We expect that our results will underpin a more simple and flexible class of tomographic 3D printers where deviations from the assumed parallel-beam projection geometry are rectified computationally.Superconducting nanowire single-photon detectors (SNSPDs) have attracted remarkable interest for visible and near-infrared single-photon detection due to their outstanding performance. However, conventional SNSPDs are generally used as binary photon-counting detectors. Another important characteristic of light, i.e., polarization, which can provide additional information of the object, has not been resolved using the standalone SNSPD. In this work, we present a first prototype of the polarimeter based on a four-pixel superconducting nanowire array, capable of resolving the polarization state of linearly-polarized light at the single-photon level. The detector array design is based on a division of focal plane configuration in which the orientation of each nanowire division (pixel) is offset by 45°. Each single nanowire pixel operates as a combination of a photon detector and almost linear polarization filter, with an average polarization extinction ratio of ∼10. The total system detection efficiency of the array is ∼1% at a total dark count rate of 680 cps, with a timing jitter of 126 ps, when the detector array is free-space coupled and illuminated with 1550-nm photons. The mean errors of the measured angle of polarization and degree of linear polarization were about -3° and 0.12, respectively. Furthermore, we successfully demonstrated polarization imaging at low-light level using the proposed detector. Our results pave the way for the development of a single-photon sensitive, fast, and large-scale integrated polarization polarimeter or imager. Such detector may find promising application in photon-starved polarization resolving and imaging with high spatial and temporal resolution.

With the advantages of the tunable microwave photonic signal filtering, uniform system performance within a broad operation bandwidth, and low SWaP, the demonstrated hybrid microwave photonic receiver module shows a potential setup to satisfy the requirements of wireless communication systems, phased-array radar systems, and electronic warfare.We introduce an image transform designed to highlight features with high degree of radial symmetry for identification and subpixel localization of particles in microscopy images. The transform is based on analyzing pixel value variations in radial and angular directions. We compare the subpixel localization performance of this algorithm to other common methods based on radial or mirror symmetry (such as fast radial symmetry transform, orientation alignment transform, XCorr, and quadrant interpolation), using both synthetic and experimentally obtained data. We find that in all cases it achieves the same or lower localization error, frequently reaching the theoretical limit.Hyperspectral light detection and ranging (HSL) can acquire the spatial and spectral information simultaneously, which can provide more information than hyperspectral imaging and single band lidar. However, the echo intensity from targets is influenced by incident angle, and relative studies were still limited which result in the effect of incident angle on HSL not being completely understood. In this study, the incident angle effect in the whole band of HSL was analyzed and corrected. Then, five types of vegetation sample with different spectral characteristics were collected at the leaf level. Spectral range changing from 550 to 830 nm with a 1 nm spectral resolution was obtained. Lambert-Beckman model was applied to analyze the effect of the incident angle on the echo intensity. The experimental results demonstrated that the Lambert-Beckman model can efficiently apply in fitting the changing of echo intensity with incidence angle and efficiently eliminate the specular effect of target. In addition, the coefficient of variation ratio is significantly improved compared to the reference target-based model. The results illustrated that, compared to reference target-based model, the Lambert-Beckman model can efficiently explain and correct the incident angle effect with specular reflection in HSL. In addition, it was found that the specular fraction Ks, which is reduced with the increasing of reflectance, is dominating the incident angle effect in the whole band, while roughness m keeps stable at different wavelengths. Another important characteristic of light, i.e., polarization, which can provide additional information of the object, has not been resolved using the standalone SNSPD. In this work, we present a first prototype of the polarimeter based on a four-pixel superconducting nanowire array, capable of resolving the polarization state of linearly-polarized light at the single-photon level. The detector array design is based on a division of focal plane configuration in which the orientation of each nanowire division (pixel) is offset by 45°. Each single nanowire pixel operates as a combination of a photon detector and almost linear polarization filter, with an average polarization extinction ratio of ∼10. The total system detection efficiency of the array is ∼1% at a total dark count rate of 680 cps, with a timing jitter of 126 ps, when the detector array is free-space coupled and illuminated with 1550-nm photons. The mean errors of the measured angle of polarization and degree of linear polarization were about -3° and 0.12, respectively. Furthermore, we successfully demonstrated polarization imaging at low-light level using the proposed detector. Our results pave the way for the development of a single-photon sensitive, fast, and large-scale integrated polarization polarimeter or imager. This article reports the rehabilitation of an adult cleft palate patient with a totally edentulous maxilla using an implant-retained prosthesis.
The purpose of this study is to evaluate the clinical efficacy of enhancing deficient interdental papilla with hyaluronic acid gel injection.
Eight patients (three males and five females) were included. The results from this study are encouraging and present evidence that small papillary deficiencies between teeth can be enhanced by the injection of a hyaluronic acid gel.

Due to the complex etiology and esthetic complications, the management of such patients is a challenging task. Vast arrays of treatment modalities are employed in the treatment of generalized periodontitis with varying success rates. Placental-derived tissues as allografts have recently been introduced for guided tissue regeneration in dentistry with favorable results. In this case report, successful periodontal treatment of a 25-year-old male patient with generalized periodontitis; Stage IV, Grade C, is presented with a 3-year follow-up. An interdisciplinary approach using regenerative periodontal surgery and a modified Andrew's bridge was used to successfully rehabilitate the patient. In a compliant patient with a well-structured interdisciplinary approach, questionable and hopeless teeth too can be retained over an extended period of time with no detrimental effect on the adjacent teeth.
Homocysteine (Hcy), an inflammatory biomarker, is a sulfur-containing amino acid. Elevated levels of plasma Hcy are evident in various inflammatory conditions and have been described as an independent risk factor for cardiovascular disease. The literature has also stated that a similar association could exist between the chronic periodontitis and plasma-Hcy levels, in otherwise systemically healthy individuals. However, studies on Hcy levels in periodontitis are scarce. Hence, this study aimed to assess the levels of plasma Hcy in patients with chronic periodontitis before and after nonsurgical periodontal therapy.
This longitudinal, case-control clinical study included a total of 60 patients who were divided into two groups. Periodontal parameters including Plaque Index, Gingival Index, Sulcus Bleeding Index, probing depth, and clinical attachment level were recorded at baseline and 12 weeks after periodontal therapy. A high-performance liquid chromatography analysis was performed to measure the Hcy leveiodontal therapy but not to the levels comparable with those found in healthy individuals. Therefore, nonsurgical periodontal therapy may be used as an adjunctive Hcy-lowering therapy, contributing toward primary prevention against cardiovascular diseases.

Stainless steel orthodontic premolar brackets were bonded to the buccal surfaces of 88 maxillary 1
premolar teeth. Teeth were divided into four groups (1) Group 1 - Control group for light-cure composites, (2) Group 2 - Displacement group for light-cure composites, (3) Group 3 - Control group for chemical cure composites, and (4) Group 4 -Displacement group for chemical cure composites. In the control groups, the brackets were bonded with no precure bracket displacement. In the displacement groups, the brackets were bonded with 2 mm precure linear displacement. Photoactivation was carried out for light-cure composites. Shear bond strength tests were carried out using the universal testing machine. Statistical analysis used Data were analyzed using the one-way analysis of variance test.
The mean shear bond strength of Groups 1, 2, 3, and 4 were observed to be 14.49 ± 0.75, 13.40 ± 0.61, 12.34 ± 0.53, and 11.55 ± 2.43MPa, respectively, with the displacement groups showing lower shear bond strength when compared to the control groups. Whether displaced or not, chemically cured composites showed lower bond strength when compared to light-cured composites.

Previous studies have shown that Reptin is overexpressed in hepatocellular carcinoma and that it is necessary for in vitro proliferation and cell survival. However, its pathophysiological role in vivo remains unknown. We aimed to study the role of Reptin in hepatocyte proliferation after regeneration using a liver Reptin knock-out model (ReptinLKO ). Interestingly, hepatocyte proliferation is strongly impaired in ReptinLKO **** 36 h after partial hepatectomy, associated with a decrease of cyclin-A expression and mTORC1 and MAPK signalling, leading to an impaired liver regeneration. Moreover, in the ReptinLKO model, we have observed a progressive loss of Reptin invalidation associated with an atypical liver regeneration. Hypertrophic and proliferative hepatocytes gradually replace ReptinKO hypotrophic hepatocytes. Moreover, when paired with commercial 20 wt% Pt/C, P-IrOx @DG can deliver current densities of 350.0, 317.6, and 47.1 mA cm-2 at a cell voltage of 2.2 V for overall water splitting in 0.5 m sulfuric acid, 1.0 m potassium hydroxide, and 1.0 m phosphate buffer solution, respectively, outperforming commercial IrO2 and nonporous IrOx nanoclusters supported on DG (O-IrOx @DG). Probing experiment, X-ray absorption spectroscopy, and theoretical calculation results demonstrate that Cu removal can successfully create P-IrOx nanoclusters and introduce unsaturated Ir atoms. The optimum binding energies of oxygenated intermediate species on unsaturated Ir sites and ultrafine IrOx nanoclusters contribute to the high intrinsic OER catalytic activity of P-IrOx @DG.PROteolysis TArgeting Chimeras (PROTACs) promote the degradation, rather than inhibition, of a drug target as a mechanism for therapeutic treatment. Metallic, few-layered 1T-MoS2 nanosheets with abundant active sites decorated on TiN nanospheres enable fast electron transfer, high adsorption ability toward polysulfides, and favorable catalytic activity contributing to the conversion kinetics of polysulfides. Benefiting from the synergistic effects of these favorable features, the as-developed hollow TiN/1T-MoS2 nanospheres with advanced architecture design can achieve a high discharge capacity of 1273 mAh g-1 at 0.1 C, good rate performance with a capacity retention of 689 mAh g-1 at 2 C, and long cycling stability with a low-capacity fading rate of 0.051% per cycle at 1 C for 800 cycles. Notably, the TiN/1T-MoS2 /S cathode with a high sulfur loading of up to 7 mg cm-2 can also deliver a high capacity of 875 mAh g-1 for 50 cycles at 0.1 C. This work promotes the prospect application for TiN/1T-MoS2 in lithium-sulfur batteries.A tricyanofuran hydrazone (TCFH) spectroscopic probe was produced to visually recognize Fe(III) ions in aqueous environments. The synthesis was started by reacting tricyanofuran with 4-aminophenol diazonium chloride. All the synthesized compounds were characterized by spectroscopic analyses. TCFH showed distinctive solvatochromic behaviour in various organic polar solvents due to intramolecular charge transfer. Its behaviour towards sensing Fe(III) was studied using ultraviolet-visible spectrophotometry. The sensing behaviours of the proposed probe for other metal ions, namely Co(II), Cr(III), Mg(II), Pb(II), Cd(II), Ba(II), Hg(II), Mn(II), Ni(II), Cu(II), Zn(II), Ca(II), Al(III), Na(I) and K(I), were also investigated, but no spectral changes were observed, indicating the probe's potential use as a highly selective and Fe(III)-sensitive colorimetric and fluorescent chemical sensor. The TCFH probe using EtOH/H2 O (51; v/v) served as a colorimetric and fluorescent chemosensor for identification of Fe(III) by the naked eye owing to both its high sensitivity and selectivity towards Fe(III) compared with the other examined metal ions. The proposed TCFH probe can therefore be utilized as an effective spectroscopic sensor for Fe(III). Both colorimetric and fluorescence recognition of the analyte depended on the concentration of Fe(III) ions and was accomplished at a pH of 7. A rapid colour change from yellow to red occurred when an aqueous solution of Fe(III) ions was added. The intensity of the colour increased at higher Fe(III) concentrations. Cyclic voltammetry measurements in the dimethylformamide solvent indicated a nonreversible redox potential. This study also explained the possible mechanisms for both solvatochromism and the detection of Fe(III) through TCFH-Fe(III) complex formation. This work promotes the prospect application for TiN/1T-MoS2 in lithium-sulfur batteries.A tricyanofuran hydrazone (TCFH) spectroscopic probe was produced to visually recognize Fe(III) ions in aqueous environments. The synthesis was started by reacting tricyanofuran with 4-aminophenol diazonium chloride. All the synthesized compounds were characterized by spectroscopic analyses. TCFH showed distinctive solvatochromic behaviour in various organic polar solvents due to intramolecular charge transfer. Its behaviour towards sensing Fe(III) was studied using ultraviolet-visible spectrophotometry. The sensing behaviours of the proposed probe for other metal ions, namely Co(II), Cr(III), Mg(II), Pb(II), Cd(II), Ba(II), Hg(II), Mn(II), Ni(II), Cu(II), Zn(II), Ca(II), Al(III), Na(I) and K(I), were also investigated, but no spectral changes were observed, indicating the probe's potential use as a highly selective and Fe(III)-sensitive colorimetric and fluorescent chemical sensor. The TCFH probe using EtOH/H2 O (51; v/v) served as a colorimetric and fluorescent chemosensor for identification of Fe(III) by the naked eye owing to both its high sensitivity and selectivity towards Fe(III) compared with the other examined metal ions. The proposed TCFH probe can therefore be utilized as an effective spectroscopic sensor for Fe(III). Both colorimetric and fluorescence recognition of the analyte depended on the concentration of Fe(III) ions and was accomplished at a pH of 7. A rapid colour change from yellow to red occurred when an aqueous solution of Fe(III) ions was added. The intensity of the colour increased at higher Fe(III) concentrations. Cyclic voltammetry measurements in the dimethylformamide solvent indicated a nonreversible redox potential. This study also explained the possible mechanisms for both solvatochromism and the detection of Fe(III) through TCFH-Fe(III) complex formation. To determine the sociodemographic, clinical characteristics, and outcomes of influenza pneumonia patients in tertiary care hospital, Karachi Pakistan.
A cross-sectional study.
The Aga Khan University Hospital Karachi Pakistan from January 2013 to December 2018. Methodology All adult patients who were older than 18 years and suspected to have viral pneumonia were included in the study. Data were abstracted on 105 patientsand were entered on preformed proforma after reviewing the files of patients.
Ninety-four (89.5%) patients were influenza positive and 15.2% (n=16) had been vaccinated. Around 92.4% (n=97), 81.9% (n=86) and 61.9% (n=65) patients had cough, fever and shortness of breath, respectively; and 63.8% (n=67), 16.2% (n=17), and 2.9% (n=3) patients had consolidation, nodules, and cavitation, respectively. Almost 91.4% (n=96) patients were given treatment and discharged home; however, 7.6% (n=8) died. Procalcitonin, creatinine, HCO3 , lactate, and bilirubin level were increased in 2nd group (mortality group) after 48 hours; however, the results were only significant for HCO3 (p = 0.035).

To investigate the efficacy of intraoperative leak test (IOLT) by methylene blue to identify the presence of leak during standardised sleeve gastrectomy (SG) procedure.
Cross-sectional comparative study.

A total of 226 consecutive sleeve gastrectomised patients, on whom IOLT was not performed, were included in the study, and were named as group 1. In order to compare with these patients, 226 consecutive sleeve gastrectomised patients, on whom IOLT was performed, were named as group 2. The groups were compared for postoperative leak, other complications, and mortality.

Eligibility criteria included the following elements manuscripts published between 1999 and 2019; prospective design; only diagnostic angiogram imaging performed prior to the MRI; DW-MRI done before and after the angiogram procedure; and number of new diffusion weighted lesions documented after each procedure. Six studies met the eligibility criteria. The total number of diagnostic angiograms reported was 430. DWI lesions were associated with diagnostic angiograms in 106 (24.65%) of total procedures. Mean time fluoroscopy, procedure by resident operator, and vascular risk factors were the recognised independent risk factors for silent cerebral ischemia after diagnostic angiogram. The patients' clinical and perioperative characteristics and the radiological features of the stones were obtained from the prospectively recorded data. GSS, S.T.O.N.E. and CROES nephrolithometry scores were calculated for each patient and their relation with stone-free status, complications, and perioperative findings were analysed.
A total of 147 patients were included in the study. Stone-free status was achieved in 76.0% of the patients, and complications developed in 27.2%. All three scorid S.T.O.N.E. scoring systems were effective and reliable in predicting stone-free status. To find out the feasibility and safety of early surgery in pediatric patients who presented with appendicular mass.

This study was conducted on 60 children, who were diagnosed with appendicular mass. Patients were operated after initial stabilisation and investigations. Variables analysed included demographic characteristics, clinical presentation, intraoperative surgical difficulties and postoperative complications. Data were entered into SPSS version 22. Chi-square test and Fisher Exact test were used for finding statistical significance among variables. A p-value of <0.05 was considered as significant. Results There were 41 (68.4%) male and 19 (31.6%) female patients with the mean age of 8.3 + 2.9 year. Mean duration of pain was 3.8 + 1.8 days. In 41 (68.4%) patients, mass was composed of appendix with adherent ileal loops and omentum, while in 19 (31.

[Conclusion] The KFS permits clinician to rapidly and accurately screen for frailty and prefrailty, or exclude frailty.[Purpose] To examine the differences in rehabilitation progress after lower-extremity bypass surgery for peripheral arterial disease (PAD) depending on the occlusive lesions. [Participants and Methods] This was a retrospective study. We included 50 patients (61 limbs; 38 males and 12 females; mean age, 73 years) who underwent lower-extremity bypass surgery for Fontaine stage 2-3 PAD. The patients were assigned to the aortoiliac (A-I) group (n=23), femoropopliteal (F-P) group (n=18), and below-knee group (n=9). We evaluated the postoperative rehabilitation progress and length of hospital stay of these groups. [Results] The postoperative ankle-brachial pressure index (ABI) of the A-I group was significantly lower than that of the F-P group, although there were no differences before surgery. The progress of rehabilitation and the length of hospitalization showed no significant differences among the three groups. The postoperative date of independent walking was significantly later in the presence of complications than in the absence of complications. [Conclusion] The progress of rehabilitation after lower-extremity bypass surgery did not differ depending on the occlusive lesions, and patients may acquire independent walking ability in approximately 5 days in the absence of postoperative complications.[Purpose] To examine the effects of age and gender in an ageing population with respect to functional decline and the relationship between muscle power and functional capacity. [Participants and Methods] The cohort (N=154) was subdivided into youngest-old (65-70 years.; n=62), middle-old (71-75 years.; n=46), and oldest-old (76-81 years.; n=46). Measures of mechanical muscle function included countermovement jump height, muscle power, leg strength and grip strength. Functional performance-based measures included heel-rise, postural balance, Timed Up and Go, and gait speed. [Results] The oldest-old performed significantly worse than the middle-old, whereas the youngest-old did not outperform the middle-old to the same extent. Increased contribution of muscle power was observed with increasing age. Males had consistently higher scores in measures of mechanical muscle function, whereas no gender differences were observed for functional capacity. [Results] On comparing both conditions, the unstable condition indices were significantly high, except for the lateral direction of entropy. The root mean square was significantly negatively correlated with entropy under normal conditions. [Conclusion] The study results suggested that the acceleration index quantitatively evaluates motion smoothness. [Results] The prevalences of sarcopenia were 10.8% and 12.9%, and 5.0% using the AWGS 2014 and 2019, and 2019 severe sarcopenia diagnostic criteria, respectively. Using AWGS 2014 criteria, the sensitivity and specificity of lower calf circumference, SARC-F score, and SARC-CalF score, were 86.7% and 62.1%, 13.3% and 91.9%, and 66.7% and 80.6%, respectively. The present study investigated age-dependent joint position sense of the forearm and wrist and whether children with developmental dyslexia have less joint position sense than typically developing children. [Participants and Methods] The participants were comprised of 84 typically developing elementary school students, 12 university students, and 2 children with developmental dyslexia. Joint position sense was evaluated using the reproduction method based on four tasks. The participants were divided into three age groups. The children with developmental dyslexia were compared with the typically developing children in the same age group. [Results] Significant negative correlations were found between the reproduction error of the typically developing children and that of the university students in most tasks. The children with developmental dyslexia showed increased reproduction error relative to the reproduction error of the typically developing children in the same age group in 4 of the 8 tasks.
