The concentrations of N and P in WNS discharged from these farms were 48.0-494.0 mg L-1 and 12.7-96.9 mg L-1, respectively, which exceeded the Korean water quality guidelines (40.0 mg L-1 N and 4.0 mg L-1 P) for effluents. These concentrations were varied and dependent on the supplied nutrient concentrations, crop types, and growth stages. In general, the concentrations of N and P were in the following order tomato > capsicum > strawberry.     This study aims to measure the effect of guided imagery and hand massage on self-rated wellbeing and pain for palliative care patients.

    This study adopted a quasi-experimental one-group pre-test post-test design. The sample consisted of n=20 adult palliative care patients who received one session of guided imagery and hand massage. Self-reported levels of wellbeing and pain were measured on a scale of 0-10 before and after the intervention. Results were analyzed using a one-tailed sign test in SPSS Software.

    The intervention elicited a statistically significant improvement in self-reported levels of wellbeing (p=.029) and pain (p=.001). Feedback from participants showed the intervention was helpful and relaxing.

    The intervention had an immediate positive effect on wellbeing and pain among palliative care patients. Considering the promising results of this pilot study, guided imagery and hand massage should be studied further in the palliative care setting.

  • Color-changeable chewing gum is used for the evaluation of masticatory performance. However, it is currently unclear whether colorimetric and visual assessment methods yield consistent results. This study aimed to clarify the consistency between colorimetric and visual methods used for the evaluation of color changes in color-changeable chewing gum.

    The sample comprised 644 older persons (mean age, 75.4±6.4 years). The chewing gum was masticated 60 times at the participant's own chewing rate and then expectorated. The color of the chewing gum was evaluated with the ΔE values and a∗ values, measured using a colorimeter, and the 10 Color Shades (10CSh) and 5 Color Scales (5CSc), using visual evaluation. Spearman's correlation analysis was performed to examine the correlation between the results obtained by the four methods. The significance level was set at α=0.05.

    The ΔE values, a∗ values, 10CSh scores, and 5CSc scores were all significantly correlated. The highest correlation coefficient (0.979) was between the ΔE values and a∗ values. The lowest correlation coefficient (0.847) was between the a∗ values and 5CSc scores. Decreased masticatory performance was observed with increased age.

The purpose of this study is to assess the shear bond strength (SBS) of metal brackets to two types of all ceramic materials using various surface mechanical and chemical conditioning methods.

    Sixty ceramic blocks were prepared using two types of all ceramic materials (IPS e.max and VITA Suprinity® PC) and treated with 3 surface treatments; surface etching with 9.6% hydrofluoric acid (HFA) for 2 mins; surface roughening with Sof-Lex finishing discs; and surface roughening with Sof-Lex finishing discs and etching with HFA. Metal brackets were attached to the surface of the ceramic blocks using light cure orthodontic adhesive. Samples were subjected to 2000 thermo-cycles (5-50 °C) and the SBS was assessed using Instron machine. The adhesive remnant index (ARI) was evaluated under light microscope. Descriptive and group comparison were calculated using Two-way ANOVA, Post-hoc Tukey's and Chi-square tests and significance level set at (P < 0.05).Results surface roughening of both ceramic materials with Sof-Lex discs and HFA resulted in a significant increase in SBS compared to other experimental groups (P < 0.05). However, VITA Suprinity ceramic prepared with Sof-Lex discs only showed the lowest SBS. The distribution of the ARI scores was significantly different between the groups (P < 0.05).

    Actinomycosis is a rare disease. It can often mimic other infectious or malignant diseases, and it is often misdiagnosed. Therefore, it is necessary to provide clinicians with clinical findings of patients with actinomycosis as many cases as possible. The aim of this study was to analyze the clinical features of actinomycosis of the orofacial soft tissues from the clinical data of the patients at the department in the past 10 years.

    A retrospective study was designed, and the general characteristics of the patients, and the clinical characteristics of actinomycosis, including the initial diagnoses, the treatment methods, and the treatment outcomes, were studied.

    Nine patients were included in the study. Initially, they were diagnosed with various diseases and treated by extraoral or intraoral surgical procedure with the administration of antibiotics. All patients were diagnosed with actinomycosis histopathologically, and lesions were cured.

Here we provide a comprehensive summary detailing the major mechanisms that viruses and bacteria associated with cancer employ to interfere with mechanisms of DNA repair. Chronopharmacology principles imply that tailoring the timing of treatments to the circadian rhythm of individual patients could optimize therapeutic management. According to these principles, chronopharmacology takes into account the individual differences in patients' clocks, the rhythmic changes in the organism sensitivity to therapeutic and side effects of drugs, and the predictable time variations of disease. This review examines the current literature on chronopharmacology of neurological diseases focusing its scope on epilepsy, Alzheimer and Parkinson diseases, and neuropathic pain, even if other neurological diseases could have been analyzed. While the results of the studies discussed in this review point to a potential therapeutic benefit of chronopharmacology in neurological diseases, the field is still in its infancy. Studies including a sufficiently large number of patients and measuring gold standard markers of the circadian rhythmicity are still needed to evaluate the beneficial effect of administration times over the 24-hour day but also of clock modulating drugs.

We isolated a heterogeneous VAN-intermediate Staphylococcus aureus (hVISA), which was also a MRSA strain with reduced sensitivity to VAN. To investigate the molecular mechanism underlying the reduced sensitivity to VAN exhibited by the hVISA strain, we compared the hVISA strain with a VAN-sensitive MRSA strain, known as the N315 strain. The images captured by transmission electron microscopy showed that the cell wall of the hVISA strain was significantly thicker than that of the N315 strain (36·72 ± 1·04 nm vs 28·15 ± 1·25 nm, P less then 0·05), and the results of real-time quantitative PCR analysis suggested that the expression levels of the cell wall thickness related genes (glmS, vraR/S, sgtB, murZ and PBP4) of the hVISA strain were significantly higher than those of the N315 strain (P less then 0·05). In conclusion, this study indicated that the upregulation of the expression of the genes related to cell wall synthesis might be the molecular mechanism underlying the cell wall thickening of the hVISA strain and might be related to its resistance to VAN.

Chronopharmacology principles imply that tailoring the timing of treatments to the circadian rhythm of individual patients could optimize therapeutic management. According to these principles, chronopharmacology takes into account the individual differences in patients' clocks, the rhythmic changes in the organism sensitivity to therapeutic and side effects of drugs, and the predictable time variations of disease. This review examines the current literature on chronopharmacology of neurological diseases focusing its scope on epilepsy, Alzheimer and Parkinson diseases, and neuropathic pain, even if other neurological diseases could have been analyzed. We isolated a heterogeneous VAN-intermediate Staphylococcus aureus (hVISA), which was also a MRSA strain with reduced sensitivity to VAN. To investigate the molecular mechanism underlying the reduced sensitivity to VAN exhibited by the hVISA strain, we compared the hVISA strain with a VAN-sensitive MRSA strain, known as the N315 strain. The images captured by transmission electron microscopy showed that the cell wall of the hVISA strain was significantly thicker than that of the N315 strain (36·72 ± 1·04 nm vs 28·15 ± 1·25 nm, P less then 0·05), and the results of real-time quantitative PCR analysis suggested that the expression levels of the cell wall thickness related genes (glmS, vraR/S, sgtB, murZ and PBP4) of the hVISA strain were significantly higher than those of the N315 strain (P less then 0·05). Ratings of the four categorical emotions and liking were used to predict hemodynamic responses in general linear model (GLM) analysis of the fMRI data. Multivariate pattern analysis (MVPA) was used to reveal discrete neural signatures of the four categories of music-induced emotions. To map neural circuits governing non-musical emotions, the subjects were scanned while viewing short emotionally evocative film clips. The GLM revealed that most emotions were associated with activity in the auditory, somatosensory, and motor cortices, cingulate gyrus, insula, and precuneus. Fear and liking also engaged the amygdala. In contrast, the film clips strongly activated limbic and cortical regions implicated in emotional processing. MVPA revealed that activity in the auditory cortex and primary motor cortices reliably discriminated the emotion categories. Our results indicate that different music-induced basic emotions have distinct representations in regions supporting auditory processing, motor control, and interoception but do not strongly rely on limbic and medial prefrontal regions critical for emotions with survival value.
    Exposure to fine particulate (PM2.5) air pollution is associated with increased cardiovascular disease (CVD), but less is known about its specific components, such as metals originating from non-tailpipe emissions. We investigated the associations of long-term exposure to metal components [iron (Fe) and copper (Cu)] in PM2.5 with CVD incidence.

    We conducted a population-based cohort study in Toronto, Canada. Exposures to Fe and Cu in PM2.5 and their combined impact on the concentration of reactive oxygen species (ROS) in lung fluid were estimated using land use regression models. Incidence of acute myocardial infarction (AMI), congestive heart failure (CHF) and CVD death was ascertained using health administrative datasets. We used mixed-effects Cox regression models to examine the associations between the exposures and health outcomes. A series of sensitivity analyses were conducted, including indirect adjustment for individual-level cardiovascular risk factors (e.g. smoking), and adjustment for PM2.5 and nitrogen dioxide (NO2).

    In single-pollutant models, we found positive associations between the three exposures and all three outcomes, with the strongest associations detected for the estimated ROS. The associations of AMI and CHF were sensitive to indirect adjustment, but remained robust for CVD death in all sensitivity analyses. In multi-pollutant models, the associations of the three exposures generally remained unaltered. Interestingly, adjustment for ROS did not substantially change the associations between PM2.5 and CVD, but attenuated the associations of NO2.

    Mass spectrometry methods are widely used for the analysis of biological and medical samples. Recently developed methods such as DESI, REIMS, NESI allow fast analyses without sample preparation at the cost of higher variability of spectra. In biology and medicine, MS profiles are often used with machine learning (classification, regression, etc.) algorithms and statistical analysis, which are sensitive to outliers and intraclass variability. Here we present SSM Display software, a tool for fast visual outlier detection and variance estimation in mass spectrometric profiles. The tool speeds up the process of manual spectra inspection, improves accuracy and explainability of outlier detection, and decreases the requirements to the operator experience. It was shown that the batch effect could be revealed through SSM analysis and that the SSM calculation can also be used for tuning novel ion sources concerning the quality of obtained mass spectra.

The COVID-19 pandemic and subsequent public health measures taken to combat it burdened the students' life with additional dramatic psychological impacts. The aim of this study was to investigate the psychological impacts that affected the university students in Egypt during the COVID-19 pandemic. An online survey was sent to the Egyptian university students via all means of online communication during the first week of May 2020 by using a non-probability snowball sampling.   • Creative cognition is recognized to involve the integration of multiple spontaneous cognitive processes and is manifested as complex networks within and between the distributed brain regions. Our results demonstrate the temporal connectivity of the dynamic large-scale creative networks between default mode network (DMN), salience network, and cerebellar network during creative cognition, and advance our understanding of the network neuroscience of creative cognition.Mammalian peptidoglycan recognition proteins (PGRPs or PGLYRPs) kill bacteria through induction of synergistic oxidative, thiol, and metal stress. Tn-seq screening of Bacillus subtilis transposon insertion library revealed that mutants in the shikimate pathway of chorismate synthesis had high survival following PGLYRP4 treatment. Deletion mutants for these genes had decreased amounts of menaquinone (MK), increased resistance to killing, and attenuated depletion of thiols following PGLYRP4 treatment. These effects were reversed by MK or reproduced by inhibiting MK synthesis. Deletion of cytochrome aa3-600 or NADH dehydrogenase (NDH) genes also increased B. subtilis resistance to PGLYRP4-induced killing and attenuated thiol depletion. PGLYRP4 treatment also inhibited B. subtilis respiration. Similarly in Escherichia coli, deletion of ubiquinone (UQ) synthesis, formate dehydrogenases (FDH), NDH-1, or cytochrome bd-I genes attenuated PGLYRP4-induced thiol depletion. In this study, an optimized Magnetization Prepared-RApid Gradient Echo (MP-RAGE) with 2 inversion times called MP2RAGE combined with advanced image co-registration is presented as an effective non-invasive methodology to quantitatively detect T1 MR contrast agents. The optimized MP2RAGE produced high quality in vivo mouse brain T1 (or R1 = 1/T1) map with high spatial resolution, 160 × 160 × 160 µm3 voxel at 9.4 T. Test-retest signal to noise was > 20 for most voxels. Extremely small iron oxide nanoparticles (ESIONPs) having 3 nm core size and 11 nm hydrodynamic radius after polyethylene glycol (PEG) coating were intracranially injected into mouse brain and detected as a proof-of-concept. Two independent MP2RAGE MR scans were performed pre- and post-injection of ESIONPs followed by advanced image co-registration. The comparison of two T1 (or R1) maps after image co-registration provided precise and quantitative assessment of the effects of the injected ESIONPs at each voxel. The proposed MR protocol has potential for future use in the detection of T1 molecular contrast agents.Machete cut fracture is an important component of morbidity associated with machete injuries although it is under reported. This was a retrospective study to assess machete cut fractures in patients seen in Federal Teaching Hospital Abakaliki and National Orthopaedic Hospital Enugu from 2009 to 2018. There were 91 patients with 154 fractures, male- to- female ratio was 101 and mean age was 31.6 ± 14.6 years. The aetiological factors were assault (57, 62.6%), armed robbery (29, 31.9%) and accidental injury (5, 5.5%). The three top bones involved were ulna, metacarpal and finger-phalanx. Fracture was communited in (17, 11.0%), and Gustilo Anderson grade IIIC in (22, 14.3%). Injury to hospital arrival interval later than 6 h was common and correlated with prolonged length of hospital stay (p  less then  0.001). Anaemia, wound infection and hemorrhagic shock were the three top complications. Nine (5.8%) fractures ended in extremity amputation. Eleven (12.1%) patients left against medical advice, and 5 (5.5%) were transferred. Normal union in 98.3% of the fractures treated and followed up for a minimum of one year. Case fatality rate was 2.2%; none of the patient that died had pre hospital care, and hemorrhagic shock accounted for all the mortality. These call for appropriate injury preventive mechanisms, and improved rates of early presentation of patients to hospital, and pre hospital care.Alzheimer's disease is the leading cause of dementia. The long progression period in Alzheimer's disease provides a possibility for patients to get early treatment by having routine screenings. However, current clinical diagnostic imaging tools do not meet the specific requirements for screening procedures due to high cost and limited availability. In this work, we took the initiative to evaluate the retina, especially the retinal vasculature, as an alternative for conducting screenings for dementia patients caused by Alzheimer's disease. Highly modular machine learning techniques were employed throughout the whole pipeline. Utilizing data from the UK Biobank, the pipeline achieved an average classification accuracy of 82.44%. Besides the high classification accuracy, we also added a saliency analysis to strengthen this pipeline's interpretability. The saliency analysis indicated that within retinal images, small vessels carry more information for diagnosing Alzheimer's diseases, which aligns with related studies.

In this study, an optimized Magnetization Prepared-RApid Gradient Echo (MP-RAGE) with 2 inversion times called MP2RAGE combined with advanced image co-registration is presented as an effective non-invasive methodology to quantitatively detect T1 MR contrast agents. The optimized MP2RAGE produced high quality in vivo mouse brain T1 (or R1 = 1/T1) map with high spatial resolution, 160 × 160 × 160 µm3 voxel at 9.4 T. Test-retest signal to noise was > 20 for most voxels. Extremely small iron oxide nanoparticles (ESIONPs) having 3 nm core size and 11 nm hydrodynamic radius after polyethylene glycol (PEG) coating were intracranially injected into mouse brain and detected as a proof-of-concept. Two independent MP2RAGE MR scans were performed pre- and post-injection of ESIONPs followed by advanced image co-registration. The comparison of two T1 (or R1) maps after image co-registration provided precise and quantitative assessment of the effects of the injected ESIONPs at each voxel. This was a retrospective study to assess machete cut fractures in patients seen in Federal Teaching Hospital Abakaliki and National Orthopaedic Hospital Enugu from 2009 to 2018. There were 91 patients with 154 fractures, male- to- female ratio was 101 and mean age was 31.6 ± 14.6 years. The aetiological factors were assault (57, 62.6%), armed robbery (29, 31.9%) and accidental injury (5, 5.5%). The three top bones involved were ulna, metacarpal and finger-phalanx. Fracture was communited in (17, 11.0%), and Gustilo Anderson grade IIIC in (22, 14.3%). Injury to hospital arrival interval later than 6 h was common and correlated with prolonged length of hospital stay (p  less then  0.001). Anaemia, wound infection and hemorrhagic shock were the three top complications. Nine (5.8%) fractures ended in extremity amputation. Eleven (12.1%) patients left against medical advice, and 5 (5.5%) were transferred. Normal union in 98.3% of the fractures treated and followed up for a minimum of one year. Case fatality rate was 2.2%; none of the patient that died had pre hospital care, and hemorrhagic shock accounted for all the mortality. In this work, we took the initiative to evaluate the retina, especially the retinal vasculature, as an alternative for conducting screenings for dementia patients caused by Alzheimer's disease. Highly modular machine learning techniques were employed throughout the whole pipeline. Utilizing data from the UK Biobank, the pipeline achieved an average classification accuracy of 82.44%. Besides the high classification accuracy, we also added a saliency analysis to strengthen this pipeline's interpretability. The saliency analysis indicated that within retinal images, small vessels carry more information for diagnosing Alzheimer's diseases, which aligns with related studies.

We sought to examine how the physical and mental well-being of players of these games were affected during the unprecedented COVID-19 restriction period as well as how their video game engagement was affected.

    Traditionally, medical students have learned surgical skills by observing a resident physician or surgeon who is performing the technique. Due to inconsistent practice opportunities in the clinical setting, a disparity of skill levels among students has been observed. In addition, the poor availability of faculty professors is a limiting factor in teaching and adequately preparing medical students for their clerkship years. With the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, medical students do not have access to traditional suturing learning opportunities. Didactic courses are available on videoconferencing platforms; however, these courses do not include technical training.

    Our overarching goal is to evaluate the efficacy and usability of web-based peer-learning for advanced suturing techniques (ie, running subcuticular sutures). We will use the Gamified Educational Network (GEN), a newly developed web-based learning tool. We will assess students' ability to identify and perform the correct technique. We will also assethe students' acceptance of the intervention.

    The study will be conducted in accordance with the Declaration of Helsinki and has been approved by our institutional review board (CERSES 20-068-D). No participants have been recruited yet.

    Peer learning through GEN has the potential to overcome significant limitations related to the COVID-19 pandemic and the lack of availability of faculty professors. Further, a decrease of the anxiety related to traditional suturing classes can be expected. We aim to create an innovative and sustainable method of teaching surgical skills to improve the efficiency and quality of surgical training in medical faculties. In the context of the COVID-19 pandemic, the need for such tools is imperative.

    In December 2019, COVID-19 broke out in Wuhan, China, leading to national and international disruptions in health care, business, education, transportation, and nearly every aspect of our daily lives. Artificial intelligence (AI) has been leveraged amid the COVID-19 pandemic; however, little is known about its use for supporting public health efforts.

    This scoping review aims to explore how AI technology is being used during the COVID-19 pandemic, as reported in the literature. Thus, it is the first review that describes and summarizes features of the identified AI techniques and data sets used for their development and validation.

    Anogenital warts are a common human papillomavirus infection. They cause emotional distress, especially when they are in the anogenital region. Cryotherapy is a first-line treatment. Previous clinical trials and case series have reported variable results with retinoids (isotretinoin) as adjuvant therapy.

    To determine the safety and efficacy of low-dose oral isotretinoin as adjuvant treatment of anogenital warts.

    Forty-six patients with anogenital warts were randomly assigned to isotretinoin + cryotherapy (n = 23) or only cryotherapy (n = 23). Patients were allocated via an interactive web-based randomization system. Evaluators were blinded to treatments. Isotretinoin 20mg/daily + cryotherapy or cryotherapy were prescribed for 6weeks. Patients were followed for 4months. Genotyping of lesions was performed before treatment started. Dermatology Life Quality Index (DLQI) and Columbia-Suicide Severity Rating Scale (C-SSRS) were measured at the beginning and end of therapy. All patients completed the study.

Patients were followed for 4months. Genotyping of lesions was performed before treatment started. Dermatology Life Quality Index (DLQI) and Columbia-Suicide Severity Rating Scale (C-SSRS) were measured at the beginning and end of therapy. All patients completed the study. The mean vertical and anterior distraction distances in Group 1 (13.3±4.1 [range, 6-27] mm and 7.4±2.1 [range, 3-13.5] mm, respectively) were significantly higher than in Group 2 (p<0.05).     This retrospective study analyzed 137 infants in 3 subgroups no ROP; mild ROP, and severe ROP requiring laser treatment (type 1 ROP).     This retrospective study included 22 eyes with center-involving DME. All eyes had 3 consecutive administrations of VEGF inhibitors. Optical coherence tomography (OCT) and OCT angiography (OCTA) of the macula with manual adjustment of segmentation lines were performed at baseline and after treatment. Vessel density in the central and parafoveal regions of the superficial and deep capillary plexus (SCP/DCP) were measured at baseline and after treatment. Vessel density and changes therein were compared between anatomical responders and non-responders as defined by changes in central subfield thickness (CST).

    Overall, there were no significant differences in vessel density in the central and parafoveal regions of the SCP and DCP after treatment compared to baseline. After categorization by anatomical response, 12 eyes were responders (CST decreased by 173.7±47.7 μm) and 10 eyes were non-responders (CST increased by 20.8±38.9 μm) (p<0.0001). There were no corresponding significant differences between responders and non-responders in SCP and DCP vessel density or changes therein after treatment.

  • Ethylene complexes of gold(i) have been stabilized by electron-rich, κ2-bound tris(pyrazolyl)borate ligands. Large up-field shifts of olefinic carbon NMR resonances and relatively long C[double bond, length as m-dash]C distances of gold bound ethylene are indicative of significant Au(i) → ethylene π-backbonding relative to the analog supported by a weakly donating ligand, consistent with the computational data.We are reporting the synthesis and structural characterization of a new hexanuclear Co(ii)/Co(iii) complex starting from a versatile pivalate cobalt precursor and the racemic mixture of a chelating Schiff base type ligand. The main [CoII4CoIII2(μ3-OH)2(μ-OR)2(μ-OR')2(μ-OR'')2]6+ core is unprecedented and exhibits an inversion center that affords only two unique Co(ii) sites. We performed DC and AC magnetic measurements and analysed them in terms of the anisotropic exchange of ground Kramers doublets at each Co(ii) site due to their unquenched angular orbital contribution to the magnetic moment. Quantum computations support the experimental data treatment. The interplay of dominant antiferromagnetic exchange, inversion symmetry and a non-collinear main quantization axis affords an exchange energy spectrum with mostly non-magnetic states.
