    Hip fracture is a severe complication of osteoporosis and is associated with a significant healthcare burden worldwide. This meta-analysis explores the association between combined multivitamin use and hip fracture risk. Our results provide more patient-centered insight into the impact of supplement use on osteoporosis outcomes.

    We searched three online databases in August 2019 and included studies that reported on multivitamin use in patients with osteoporotic hip fractures. The inclusion criteria were (1) adult patients with osteoporotic hip fractures, (2) availability of full-text articles in English, and (3) at least 1 year of follow-up. No suitable randomized controlled trials could be identified for inclusion in the analysis. The quality of the included studies was assessed using the Newcastle-Ottawa Scale (NOS).

    Eight studies containing 80,148 subjects in total were included in this study. Among these, 4237 cases of fragility hip fracture were reported. The average age was 69±5.3 years, and 21% of subjects were male. Multivitamin use was found to be significantly associated with a lower risk of sustaining a fragility hip fracture (OR 0.49, 95%CI 0.32-0.77). The Begg and Mazumdar test and funnel plot indicated that no significant publication bias was present.

    Combined multivitamins are amongst the most widely used supplements and are often preferred over single vitamins. Our meta-analysis indicates that multivitamin use is significantly protective against osteoporotic hip fracture. In the future, randomized controlled trials should be performed to establish multivitamins as effective preventative measures for this injury.

    The incidence of epicanthus is extremely high in Asians. Although many techniques have been introduced to remove the epicanthus, there are still some complications. Herein, we introduced a method involving an incision on the lower palpebral margin combined with a tiny triangular flap for correction of epicanthal folds, which is always performed in combination with double eyelid plasty.

    After making an incision, the ectopic medial canthal ligament was removed. The ligament pulling the medial canthus was cut along the lower palpebral margin incision, so the medial canthus could be repositioned upward. The tiny triangular flap of the medial canthus would naturally move downward and cover the lower palpebral margin incision. The skin folds on the lower palpebral margin were trimmed and sutured. After epicanthoplasty was completed, double eyelid plasty was performed using the incision or non-incision method.

    A total of 547 epicanthoplasties were performed during the past 7 years. The follow-up time ranged from 1 month to 5 years. Ninety-eight percent of the patients were satisfied with the results of the epicanthoplasty. The scars in the medial canthal area were tiny, the enlargement of the medial canthus was obvious, and the double eyelid line in the medial canthal area was natural and smooth.

    The introduced method is simple in design and can preserve the original shape of the medial canthus while widening the palpebral fissure, which is a particularly suitable approach for epicanthoplasty in Asian patients.

  • The prognosis for the number of infected people in December 2020 and January-February 2021 shows negative events which will decrease slowly.Cultured meat involves producing meat from animal cells, not from slaughtered animals. This innovation has the potential to revolutionize the meat industry, with wide implications for the environment, health and animal welfare. The main purpose of this paper is to stimulate some economic research on cultured meat. In particular, this paper includes a prospective discussion on the demand and supply of cultured meat. It also discusses some early results on the environmental impacts of cultured meat, emphasizing the promises (e.g., regarding the reduction in land use) but also the uncertainties. It then argues that cultured meat is a moral improvement compared to conventional meat. Finally, it discusses some regulatory issues, and the need for more public support to the innovation.Recurrent outbreaks of the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) have occurred in many countries around the world. We developed a twofold framework in this study, which is composed by one novel descriptive model to depict the recurrent global outbreaks of COVID-19 and one dynamic model to understand the intrinsic mechanisms of recurrent outbreaks. We used publicly available data of cumulative infected cases from 1 January 2020 to 2 January 2021 in 30 provinces in China and 43 other countries around the world for model validation and further analyses. Here, I sketch a notion of cognitive focus intended to do this narrowing. The notion borrows three key aspects from visual focus and some technological aides-causation, amplification, and suppression. I suggest a broader application of this framework to address the conjunction problem not only in ordinary contexts of perceptual focus but also in evidence cases involving non-perceptual cognitive focus. These changes posed new challenges for university students and many social welfare agencies have warned that it could have adverse effects on the social wellbeing (SWB) of university students. Students may lack the necessary social study-related resources (peer- and lecturer support) (SSR) necessary to aid them in coping with the new demands that the lockdown may bring. As such, the present study aimed to investigate the trajectory patterns, rate of change and longitudinal associations between SSR and SWB of 175 Dutch students before and during the COVID-19 lockdown. A piecewise latent growth modelling approach was employed to sample students' experiences over three months. Participants to complete a battery of psychometric assessments for five weeks before the COVID-19 lockdown was implemented, followed by two directly after and a month follow-up. The results were paradoxical and contradicting to initial expectations. Where SSR showed a linear rate of decline before- and significant growth trajectory during the lockdown, SWB remained moderate and stable.   • To determine whether a room air challenge (RAC) correlates with duration of respiratory support for infants with bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD).

    Prospective study of preterm infants with BPD from 2015 to 2018. Infants receiving ≤2 l flow at 36 weeks postmenstrual age (PMA) underwent RAC. Cox regression was used to adjust the duration of respiratory support after 36 weeks PMA for significant covariates.

    Of 161 infants with BPD, 91 were eligible for RAC; 51 passed and 40 failed. Infants who failed RAC had longer respiratory support after 36 weeks PMA than infants who passed (median 19 weeks (IQR 15-33) versus 2 weeks (IQR 1-8, p < 0.001)), which persisted after multivariable adjustment (hazard ratio -1.42, 95% CI -1.94 to -0.91, p < 0.001). Infants failing RAC also had more frequent and longer duration of home oxygen use.

    To compare the efficacy of video-assisted self-directed neonatal resuscitation skills course with video-assisted facilitator-led course.

    This multicenter, randomized, blinded, non-inferiority-controlled trial compared two methods of teaching basic neonatal resuscitation skills using mask ventilation. Groups of novice providers watched an instructional video. One group received instructor facilitation (Ins-Video). The other group did not (Self-Video). An Objective Structured Clinical Exam (OSCE) measured skills performance, and a written test gauged knowledge.

    One hundred and thirty-four students completed the study. Sixty-three of 68 in the Self-Video Group (92.6%) and 59 of 66 in the Ins-Video Group (89.4%) achieved post-training competency in positive pressure ventilation (primary outcome). OSCE passing rates were low in both groups. Knowledge survey scores were comparable between groups and non-inferior.

To develop effective neuroprotective strategies, the mechanistic basis for brain injury must be understood. The fragile state of neonates presents unique research challenges; invasive measures of cerebral blood flow and oxygenation assessment exceed tolerable risk profiles. Near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) can safely and non-invasively estimate cerebral oxygenation, a correlate of cerebral perfusion, offering insight into brain injury-related mechanisms. Unfortunately, lack of standardization in device application, recording methods, and error/artifact correction have left the field fractured. This systematic review of the peer-reviewed literature regarding kratom in relation to maternal and infant outcomes resulted in analysis of six case reports of prenatal kratom exposure. Maternal and infant withdrawal from kratom exposure was described in each case, resulting in pharmacologic treatment for both mothers and infants.Protein-bound uremic toxins (Indoxyl sulfate [IS] and p-cresyl sulfate [PCS]) are both associated with cardiovascular (CV) and all-cause mortality in subjects with chronic kidney disease (CKD). Possible mechanisms have not been elucidated. In hemodialysis patients, we investigated the relationship between the free form of IS and PCS and 181 CV-related proteins. First, IS or PCS concentrations were checked, and high levels were associated with an increased risk of acute coronary syndrome (ACS) in 333 stable HD patients. CV proteins were further quantified by a proximity extension assay. We examined associations between the free form protein-bound uremic toxins and the quantified proteins with correction for multiple testing in the discovery process. In the second step, the independent association was evaluated by multivariable-adjusted models. We rank the CV proteins related to protein-bound uremic toxins by bootstrapped confidence intervals and ascending p-value.     To determine whether a room air challenge (RAC) correlates with duration of respiratory support for infants with bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD). Prospective study of preterm infants with BPD from 2015 to 2018. Infants receiving ≤2 l flow at 36 weeks postmenstrual age (PMA) underwent RAC. Cox regression was used to adjust the duration of respiratory support after 36 weeks PMA for significant covariates. Of 161 infants with BPD, 91 were eligible for RAC; 51 passed and 40 failed. Infants who failed RAC had longer respiratory support after 36 weeks PMA than infants who passed (median 19 weeks (IQR 15-33) versus 2 weeks (IQR 1-8, p < 0.001)), which persisted after multivariable adjustment (hazard ratio -1.42, 95% CI -1.94 to -0.91, p < 0.001).   • Caesium lead halide perovskites were recently demonstrated to be a relevant class of semiconductors for photonics and optoelectronics. Unlike CsPbBr3 and CsPbI3, the realization of high-quality thin films of CsPbCl3, particularly interesting for highly efficient white LEDs when coupled to converting phosphors, is still a very demanding task. In this work we report the first successful deposition of nanocrystalline CsPbCl3 thin films (70-150 nm) by radio frequency magnetron sputtering on large-area substrates. We present a detailed investigation of the optical properties by high resolution photoluminescence (PL) spectroscopy, resolved in time and space in the range 10-300 K, providing quantitative information concerning carriers and excitons recombination dynamics. The PL is characterized by a limited inhomogeneous broadening (~15 meV at 10 K) and its origin is discussed from detailed analysis with investigations at the micro-scale. The samples, obtained without any post-growth treatment, show a homogeneous PL emission in spectrum and intensity on large sample areas (several cm2). Temperature dependent and time-resolved PL spectra elucidate the role of carrier trapping in determining the PL quenching up to room temperature. Our results open the route for the realization of large-area inorganic halide perovskite films for photonic and optoelectronic devices.This study concerns the preparation and functionality testing of a new class of Pickering particles for food emulsion stabilization colloidal lignin-rich particles (CLRPs) derived from ethanol-soluble extract of cocoa shell. The cocoa shell particles were milled, dispersed in water and exposed to 250 °C for 1 h in a stainless-steel tubular reactor followed by ethanol extraction to obtain a lignin-rich extract (46% (w/w) lignin with the remainder predominantly lipids). CLRPs were then fabricated by the precipitation of ethanol-dissolved extract into water (antisolvent). By employing an agitated process and droplet dosing into a non-agitated process, four particle suspensions of a range of submicron diameters were obtained. All particle suspensions contained the same mass fraction of extract and were surface active, with surface tension decreasing with increasing particle size. The smallest particles were obtained when lipids were removed from the extract prior to particle processing. In contrast to the other four particle suspensions, this one failed to stabilize a 10% (w/w) sunflower oil-in-water emulsion. We hypothesize that the phospholipids indigenously present in these CLRP formulations are a critical component for Pickering functionality. The contribution of individual phases and their degree of agglomeration on the carbon support directly influence the selectivity of the obtained catalysts. It was found that the mixed iron-cobalt spinel single phase gives rise to significant improvement of the catalyst selectivity towards the desired 4e- reaction pathway, in comparison to the reference bare cobalt spinel, whereas spurious iron oxides play a negative role for the catalyst selectivity.This paper describes a practical approach to the transformation of Base Transceiver Stations (BTSs) into scalable and controllable DC Microgrids in which an energy management system (EMS) is developed to maximize the economic benefit. The EMS strategy focuses on efficiently managing a Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) along with photovoltaic (PV) energy generation, and non-critical load-shedding. The EMS collects data such as real-time energy consumption and generation, and environmental parameters such as temperature, wind speed and irradiance, using a smart sensing strategy whereby measurements can be recorded and computing can be performed both locally and in the cloud. Within the Spanish electricity market and applying a two-tariff pricing, annual savings per installed battery power of 16.8 euros/kW are achieved. The system has the advantage that it can be applied to both new and existing installations, providing a two-way connection to the electricity grid, PV generation, smart measurement systems and the necessary management software. All these functions are integrated in a flexible and low cost HW/SW architecture. The competitive risk model was made to compare the association with cardia cancer and non-cardia cancer about the causes of death. Propensity score matching (PSM) was performed to reduce the bias. Results We found that cardia cancer was more common in male patients and the White than that in non-cardia cancer at early stage, signet ring cell carcinoma was more common in non-cardia cancer, and the differentiation of non-cardia cancer was worse. Through Weighted Gene Correlation Network Analysis (WGCNA), six modules associated with three subtypes were identified. Pathway enrichment for the modules revealed that crucial pathways including p53 signaling and immune-related pathways were significantly enriched. Fecal microbiota transplantation is recommended for recurrent CDI, but emerging data support use for FCDI. We aimed to assess the cost-effectiveness of a sequential fecal microbiota transplantation (sFMT) protocol for FCDI compared with current standard therapy.

  • Stroke is a leading cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide. Although the majority of strokes affect the elderly, the incidence of stroke in young patients is on the rise. Prompt recognition of stroke symptoms and time critical therapies play a key role in management and prognosis of this condition. This is especially critical in young stroke patients, for whom delays in early recognition and treatment can result in many years of disability with associated social and financial burden. Misdiagnosis and unwarranted variation in treatment of stroke in young patients is problematic. Clinician implicit bias, the unconscious and unintentional process of judgement in healthcare decision-making, is a contributor to the short-falls in outcomes in this population. Interventions in this process have been shown to improve clinical outcomes in young stroke patients and represent an active area of study.Glioblastoma (GBM) typically presents as a single lesion. Multicentric GBM are defined as well separated lesions on MRI (enhancing and non-enhancing). Multicentric GBM with non-enhancing lesions (MNE-GBM) are rarely described in literature. We aimed at describing the radiologic characteristics, treatment, and clinical course of those patients. The institutional neuropathological database was searched for GBM patients diagnosed between 1/1/2015 and 31/05/2018. All pre-operative MRI brain scans were reviewed to identify patients with MNE-GBM. Electronic medical records and follow-up MRI scans were reviewed to assess progression-free survival (PFS) and overall survival (OS). Out of 149 adult patients with newly diagnosed GBM, 12 met the inclusion criteria of MNE-GBM, all of them presented at least one enhancing lesion. Median follow-up for the MNE-GBM patients was 16.1 months. At last follow-up, all patients had recurrence (median PFS 7.6 months) and eleven patients had deceased. Median OS was 16.2 months (95% CI, 4.1-27.5). Eleven patients received radiotherapy concomitant with temozolomide as initial treatment. Radiation field included all the disease foci (enhancing and non-enhancing lesions) in 8 patients, five of them progressed within the non-enhancing lesion. Three patients did not receive radiation for the entire non-enhancing lesions, and two of them progressed within the non-irradiated areas. We retrospectively analyzed 133 patients with OPLL or CSM who underwent expansive laminoplasty. Preoperative neutral and extension C2-7 cobb angle (CA), T1s, C2-7 sagittal vertical axis, and C2-7 slope angle (SA) were measured. EF of C2-7 CA and C2-7 SA was defined as extension CA/SA minus neutral CA/SA. Significant angular kyphosis was defined as LCL less than -10° after surgery. Mean loss of lordosis was -3.23, and 16.5% of patients showed significant kyphosis. Preoperative EF-CA, EF-SA, and T1s were found to be predictive for angular kyphosis by Pearson correlation analysis. The receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve analysis showed that the area under the curve (AUC) of radiologic measurements could not reach 0.7. EF of C2-7 CA and C2-7 SA was defined as extension CA/SA minus neutral CA/SA. Significant angular kyphosis was defined as LCL less than -10° after surgery. Mean loss of lordosis was -3.23, and 16.5% of patients showed significant kyphosis. Preoperative EF-CA, EF-SA, and T1s were found to be predictive for angular kyphosis by Pearson correlation analysis.     Forty-six patients with primary preoperative curve, pelvic obliquity, and kyphosis mean values of 84.9º, 21.5º, and 76.1º, respectively, were included. Thirty-four (74%) patients underwent scoliosis correction and 12 (26%), kyphectomy. A trend in reduction of %EBV (estimated blood volume) loss with antifibrinolytic use from 50.2 ± 32.3 to 33.8 ± 17.2% was observed (p = 0.103). Simultaneous detethering was performed in 13 (27.7%) patients and was not associated with higher short-term complication rates. There were 12 cases of short-term surgical complications (26.1%); among them, six had deep wound infection requiring surgical debridement, and one a superficial wound infection. Drainage time longer than 4days was significantly associated with wound infection (OR = 15.8, p = 0.01).

The purpose of this review is to help clinicians understand treatment intensification using iGlarLixi by presenting typical clinical scenarios supported by research evidence. These cases will focus on individuals with T2D inadequately controlled by oral antihyperglycemic drugs, basal insulin, or glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonists (GLP-1 RAs), and take into consideration T2D duration, body mass index, incidence of adverse events, and regimen simplicity. Clinical evidence on the efficacy, effectiveness, and safety of iGlarLixi from randomized controlled trials and real-world studies will be discussed in the context of these cases.

Nail clipping showed focal melanin deposition, and dermoscopy demonstrated a region of localized erythema in the lunula concerning for possible melanocytic neoplasm. Subsequent nail biopsy showed numerous vertically oriented filamentous bacteria and coccobacilli within the nail plate consistent with a diagnosis of subungual nail erythrasma. Nail erythrasma is a rare entity. Additionally, this case highlights a new clinical presentation of nail erythrasma as melanonychia. Alopecia areata (AA) is a form of nonscarring alopecia and one of the most common autoimmune disorders. Persistent or severe variants lead to potential disfigurement and are associated with a significant negative impact on the patient's quality of life. A 51-year-old female patient presenting with refractory alopecia universalis was successfully treated with oral tofacitinib. Recurrence was not observed following 17 months of therapy. We described a case of a female patient referred to the outpatient's hair consultation of our department, in which we performed trichoscopy as a very useful tool for the diagnosis, followed by pathology that confirmed KFSD. In our article, we underlined the importance of trichoscopy for the diagnosis of this hair disease, with also a review of the literature on diagnosis and treatment. After identifying the unique order of integration, the Westerlund (2007) panel cointegration is applied. A long-run relationship is confirmed among the variables. The study revealed that an N-pattern relationship exists between capture fisheries production (CFP) and growth of the economy in the panel of selected countries. The industry focuses on achieving a cleaner environment and promotes the sustainable development of the fisheries. Financial development has a negative and significant effect on CFP. This reflects that domestic credit is not only used for the capture of fish but also for conservation purposes. Ramachandran plot displayed 99.3% of amino acids in the allowed region and 0.7% residues in the disallowed region. Multiple sequence alignment (MSA) and structure superposition of PsGH3 with other homologues from GH3 family revealed the conserved residues, Asp274 and Glu624 present in loops LA and LB, respectively originating from N-terminal domain act as catalytic residues. The volume and area calculated for PsGH3 displayed a deep active-site conformation comparable with its homologues, β-1,4-glucosidases (GH3) of Kluyveromyces marxianus and Streptomyces venezuelae. Molecular dynamic (MD) simulation of PsGH3 structure for 80 ns suggested stable and compact structure. Molecular docking studies revealed deeper active site conformation of PsGH3 that could house larger cellooligosaccharides up to 7° of polymerization (DP7). The amino acid residues, Ala86, Leu88, Cys275, Pro483, Phe493, Asn417, Asn491, Pro492, and Leu495 created a binding pocket near the catalytic cleft, crucial for ligand binding.   • BACKGROUND The purpose of this study was to 1) determine the incidence of POUR in patients undergoing lung resection at our institution; 2) identify differences in potential risk factors between patients who did and did not develop POUR; and 3) describe patient outcomes across POUR status. METHODS The charts of 225 patients between 2016 and 2017 were reviewed and 191 met criteria for inclusion. All patients followed the institution's catheterization removal protocol. Re-catheterization was defined as requiring either in-and-out catheterization or Foley catheter placement. Fisher's exact and Wilcoxon tests were used for analysis. RESULTS 35 (18%) patients developed POUR. Patients with POUR were older (p=0.01), had increased baseline creatinine (p=0.04), and a higher prevalence of benign prostatic hyperplasia (p=0.007). POUR patients were also less likely to get a Foley catheter intraoperatively (p=0.0002). Other intraoperative factors, like surgical approach and extent of resection were not significantly different between patients who did and did not develop POUR. Postoperative factors (epidural use or days with chest tube) were similar. While patients with POUR were more likely to be discharged with a Foley catheter (13% vs. 0%, p=0.002), no difference in length of stay, or incidences of urinary tract infections 30-day readmission were observed. CONCLUSIONS Roughly 1 in 5 patients undergoing lung resection develop POUR. Patients who developed POUR were more likely to not have a Foley catheter placed intraoperatively. However, patients who had POUR did not have worsened patient outcomes (urinary tract infections, length of stay, 30-day readmission). We evaluated the relationship among the affected lobe, postoperative infectious complications, and cancer recurrence in patients who underwent lobectomy for clinical stage I lung cancer. METHODS We retrospectively reviewed 422 cases of resected lung cancer. We recorded the postoperative complications that developed within 30 days after surgery. The following covariates were included in the outcome analysis patient demographic variables, surgical approach, laterality, affected lobe, tumor size, histological type, tumor grade, pleural lavage cytology, pleural invasion, lymphovascular invasion, and lymph node metastasis. RESULTS Lower lobectomy was associated with significantly poorer recurrence-free (excluding non-specific death) and overall survival than upper lobectomy. According to a stepwise multiple cox-proportional hazards analysis, lower lobectomy, lymph node metastasis, tumor grade, and pleural invasion, were independent predictors of recurrence. The following postoperative complications were significantly associated with cancer recurrence and predominantly developed after lower lobectomy any grade ≥3 complications (n=61), space/organ surgical site infection of any grade (n=55), and any infection requiring antibiotics (n=61). CONCLUSIONS The current study revealed significant relationship among the site of resection (upper or lower lobe), cancer recurrence, and occurrence of infectious complications. We must clarify the role of preventing infectious complications in improving the early- and long-term outcomes of lower lobe cancer. Olfactory ensheathing cells (OECs) are special glial cells localized in olfactory system which secrete large number of neurotrophic factors and promote the migration and survival of neurons. Canonical Wnt/β-catenin signaling is activated in OECs during development and facilitates the growth and regeneration of axons. In the present study, we investigated the effects of Wnt-activated OECs on the proliferation and differentiation of neural stem cells (NSCs) in vitro. Primary neonatal mouse OECs were cultured and identified by immunostaining of P75 and GFAP. Wnt activation was achieved by lentivirus transfection of dominant-active-β-catenin (EbC) and examined by immunostaining of PY489. The conditioned medium (CM) of Wnt-activated OECs (wOECs-CM) and control OECs (cOECs-CM) was used to stimulate NSCs. In proliferation assay, wOECs-CM could increase the percentage of Ki67/Sox2 double positive cells. Under differentiation condition, wOECs-CM could maintain the expression of Nestin and promote the differentiation of NSCs into Tuj1-positive neurons. Taken together, our data revealed that wOECs stimulates the proliferation and differentiation of NSCs in a secretory manner, indicating that combined transplantation of wOECs and NSCs may be beneficial for regeneration. METHODS In a comparative study, we intended to examine possible differences in optic nerve diameter (OND) and optic nerve sheath diameter (ONSD) between 60 patients with multiple sclerosis (MS) and 60 individuals as matched healthy controls. RESULTS The OND, ONSD and OND/ONSD ratio in both eyes showed significantly lower amounts in patients compared to healthy controls (p  less then  0.05). There were no correlations, between either OND or ONSD and factors including gender, age, P100 amplitude, disease duration, history of optic neuritis and number of T2 lesions in MRI (P ≥ 0.05). Expanded disability status scale (EDSS) and p100 Latency were correlated with both OND and ONSD values (P  less then  0.05). CONCLUSIONS TBS showed significantly lower amounts of OND, ONSD and OND/ONSD ratio in MS patients without current attack compared to their healthy controls indicating a subclinical axonal loss over time. It is suggested that TBS could be an applicable tool for early detection of optic nerve damages along with clinical and para-clinical findings. Expanded disability status scale (EDSS) and p100 Latency were correlated with both OND and ONSD values (P  less then  0.05). CONCLUSIONS TBS showed significantly lower amounts of OND, ONSD and OND/ONSD ratio in MS patients without current attack compared to their healthy controls indicating a subclinical axonal loss over time. It is suggested that TBS could be an applicable tool for early detection of optic nerve damages along with clinical and para-clinical findings. There is increasing evidence that COPD is a disease of accelerated lung aging, with the accumulation of senescent cells, which lose their ability to repair and secrete multiple inflammatory proteins known as the senescence-associated secretory phenotype (SASP), which mimics the profile of inflammatory mediators secreted in COPD. This review discusses novel drugs (senotherapies) that target cellular senescence which may be a promising therapeutic approach to prevent currently unaddressed disease progression and mortality in COPD. A major pathway leading to senescence is via the activation of PI3 kinase-mammalian target of rapamycin (mTOR) signaling. Existing drugs, such as rapamycin and metformin, target this pathway. Mitochondrial oxidative stress is a key driving mechanism for this pathway and mitochondria-targeted antioxidants are promising.
