  • The fabrication of functional tissue or organs substitutes has always been the pursuit of goals in the field of tissue engineering. But even biocompatible tissue-engineered scaffolds still suffer from immune rejection, subsequent long-term oxidative stress and inflammation, which can delay normal tissue repair and regeneration. As a well-known natural antioxidant, polyphenols have been widely used in tissue engineering in recent years. The introduced polyphenols not only reduce the damage of oxidative stress to normal tissues, but show specific affinity to functional molecules, such as receptors, enzyme, transcription and transduction factors, etc. Therefore, polyphenols can promote the recovery process of damaged tissues by both regulating tissue microenvironment and participating in cell events, which embody specifically in antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, antibacterial and growth-promoting properties. In addition, based on its hydrophilic and hydrophobic moieties, polyphenols have been widely used to improve the mechanical properties and anti-degradation properties of tissue engineering scaffolds. In this review, the research advances of tissue engineering scaffolds containing polyphenols is discussed systematically from the aspects of action mechanism, introduction method and regulation effect of polyphenols, in order to provide references for the rational design of polyphenol-related functional scaffolds.3D bioprinting is a powerful technique for engineering tissues used to study cell behavior and tissue properties in vitro. With the right formulation and printing parameters, bioinks can provide native biological and mechanical cues while allowing for versatile 3D structures that recapitulate tissue-level organization. In particular, decellularized extracellular matrix (dECM) has become a promising material with the unique ability to maintain both biochemical and topographical micro-environments of native tissues. However, dECM has shown technical limitations for 3D printing (3DP) applications posed by its intrinsically low mechanical stability. Herein, we substituted animal-derived reagents used in a standard method of xenogeneic hiPSC-EC differentiation with functional counterparts of human origin. As a result, we generated xenogeneic-free hiPSC-ECs (XF-hiPSC-ECs) with similar marker expression and function to those of human primary ECs.

  • Optimizing treatment regimens for anti-angiogenic drugs is now a major issue in the management of patients with exudative AMD. The evolution of these approaches has led retinologists to favor so-called proactive administration regimens, such as Treat-and-Extend (T&E), which make it possible to anticipate recurrence and to plan intravitreal injections of anti-angiogenic drugs in advance. Nevertheless, a real need to standardize the application of this regimen has been identified. This article proposes a consensus based on the Delphi methodology, which might provide a guide for ophthalmologists to manage patients with exudative AMD using the T&E protocol. While some aspects remain debated to date, this article provides elements to guide the implementation of T&E. The experts recommend that a loading dose of 3 monthly injections should be administered before starting T&E. They also recommend adjusting the reinjection intervals by±2 weeks in a standardized fashion. The intervals are then decreased in the presence of anatomical and/or functional deterioration, maintained when the interval of recurrence is identified, and increased when anatomical and/or functional improvement is observed. A maximum interval between 3 and 4 months is recommended by the experts, with maintenance of the maximum interval for 1 year before considering a possible exit from the T&E protocol. In the event of a significant decrease in visual acuity related to the disease along with significant anatomical degradation, it is recommended to restart monthly injections. In the case of bilateral disease, when synchronized timing of injections for both eyes is desired, the experts recommend using the shorter of the two intervals.
    Obesity and type 2 diabetes mellitus are associated with elevated levels of inflammatory markers. This chronic inflammation is known to contribute to increased risk of cardiovascular disease in these populations. Laparoscopic Roux-en-Y gastric bypass is associated with a high rate of diabetes remission. We hypothesize that laparoscopic Roux-en-Y gastric bypass decreases systemic inflammatory markers and cardiovascular disease risk factors in obese diabetics.

    To examine the mediating role of emotional eating (EE) in the association between food insecurity (FI) and obesity in Latina women.

    A secondary analysis of a cross-sectional study.

    Women (n = 297) were recruited from a community health center in Lawrence, MA.

    The 6-item US Department of Agriculture Household Food Security Scale was used to measure FI. The Three-Factor Eating Questionnaire Revised 18-item, version 2 was used to measure EE. Measured height and weight were used to calculate body mass index. Covariates included age, education, marital status, number of children in the house, physical activity, and country of birth.

    Multivariable logistic and linear regressions. Mediation was tested and the mediated proportion was calculated.

    Overall, 36.7% of women experienced FI. In adjusted regression models, FI was positively associated with obesity (odds ratio [OR] = 1.79; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.08-2.97; P = 0.02) and EE (β = 0.22; 95% CI, 0.001-0.44; P = 0.05), and EE was positively associated with obesity (OR = 1.82; 95% CI, 1.37-2.42; P < 0.01). When EE was included in the main effects model, FI was not significantly associated with obesity (OR = 1.64; 95% CI, 0.97-2.76; P = 0.06) and EE explained 21% of the association.

    This study aimed to evaluate the usability of the virtual cafeteria (VC) and determine its suitability for further studies in portion size education and rehabilitation of nutrition.

    The study was conducted with 73 participants (aged 18-40 years). The VC, where the participants performed the task of assembling a meal, was created as a virtual reality simulation of a buffet-style cafeteria (94 food and 10 beverage items). The participants were asked to complete the System Usability Scale, which regards ≥70 points as acceptable, and to give comments about the VC.

    The mean System Usability Scale score was 79.4 ± 12.71 (range, 22.2-97.2). Approximately 68% of the participants described positive qualities for the VC. The participants with technical background reported the VC as more usable (96%) than the others (74%) (χ
     = 5,378; df = 1, P = 0.025).

Paracoccidioides spp., the causative agent of paracoccidioidomycosis, may also colonize the oral cavity leading to soft tissue damage. It was hypothesized that both fungi can interact with each other, increasing the growth of the biofilm and its virulence, which in turn can lead to a more aggressive infectivity. We characterized the impact of C. parvum infection on the goat kid microbiome. C. parvum was orally administered to parasite-naïve goats, and infection was monitored for 26 days in fecal samples using immunofluorescence assay and qPCR tests. Age-matched goats served as uninfected controls. A reduction in body weight gain, diarrhea, and dehydration were observed in infected goats compared to the uninfected controls. Infection decreased the bacterial diversity 5 days post-infection (dpi), but this parameter recovered at 15 dpi. The infection altered the relative abundance of several taxa. A total of 38 taxa displayed significant differences in abundance between control and infected goats at both 5 and 15 dpi. The present study aimed to analyze whether PRMs extracted from Lomentospora prolificans, Scedosporium apiospermum, Scedosporium boydii, and Scedosporium aurantiacum block bacterial growth and biofilm formation in vitro. PRM from L. prolificans and S. boydii displayed the best bactericidal effect against methicillin resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA), Burkholderia cepacia, and Escherichia coli, but not Pseudomonas aeruginosa, all of which are the most frequently found bacteria in CF lungs.   • Ultrathin semiconductors with great electrical and photovoltaic performance hold tremendous promise for fundamental research and applications in next-generation electronic devices. Here, we report new 2D direct-bandgap semiconductors, namely mono- and few-layer In2Ge2Te6, with a range of desired properties from ab initio simulations. We suggest that 2D In2Ge2Te6 samples should be highly stable and can be experimentally fabricated by mechanical exfoliation. They are predicted to exhibit extraordinary optical absorption and high photovoltaic conversion efficiency (≥31.8%), comparable to the most efficient single-junction GaAs solar cell. We reveal that, thanks to the presence of van Hove singularities in the band structure, unusual quantum-phase transitions could be induced in monolayers via electrostatic doping. Furthermore, taking bilayer In2Ge2Te6 as a prototypical system, we demonstrate the application of van der Waals pressure as a promising strategy to tune the electronic and stacking property of 2D crystals. We also employ a linear approach in the spirit of the classical Debye-Hückel approximation, which allows one to obtain explicit expressions for the averaged potentials, ionic profiles, effective surface interactions and the net ionic charge confined between the walls. Emphasis is placed on the limit of strongly confined electrolytes, in which case local electroneutrality in the inter-surface space might not be fulfilled. In order to access the effects of such a lack of local charge neutrality on the ion-induced interactions between surfaces with modulated charge domains, we consider two distinct model systems for the confined electrolyte one in which a salt reservoir is explicitly taken into account via the osmotic equilibrium with an electrolyte of fixed bulk concentration, and a second one in which the equilibrium with a charge neutral ionic reservoir is implicitly considered. While in the former case the osmotic ion exchange might lead to non-vanishing net charges, in the latter model charge neutrality is enforced through the appearance of an implicit Donnan potential across the charged interfaces.     Ultrathin semiconductors with great electrical and photovoltaic performance hold tremendous promise for fundamental research and applications in next-generation electronic devices. Here, we report new 2D direct-bandgap semiconductors, namely mono- and few-layer In2Ge2Te6, with a range of desired properties from ab initio simulations. We suggest that 2D In2Ge2Te6 samples should be highly stable and can be experimentally fabricated by mechanical exfoliation. They are predicted to exhibit extraordinary optical absorption and high photovoltaic conversion efficiency (≥31.8%), comparable to the most efficient single-junction GaAs solar cell. We reveal that, thanks to the presence of van Hove singularities in the band structure, unusual quantum-phase transitions could be induced in monolayers via electrostatic doping. Furthermore, taking bilayer In2Ge2Te6 as a prototypical system, we demonstrate the application of van der Waals pressure as a promising strategy to tune the electronic and stacking property of 2D crystals. In order to access the effects of such a lack of local charge neutrality on the ion-induced interactions between surfaces with modulated charge domains, we consider two distinct model systems for the confined electrolyte one in which a salt reservoir is explicitly taken into account via the osmotic equilibrium with an electrolyte of fixed bulk concentration, and a second one in which the equilibrium with a charge neutral ionic reservoir is implicitly considered. While in the former case the osmotic ion exchange might lead to non-vanishing net charges, in the latter model charge neutrality is enforced through the appearance of an implicit Donnan potential across the charged interfaces.   • One of the challenges of modern biotechnology is to find new routes to mitigate the resistance to conventional antibiotics. Antimicrobial peptides (AMPs) are an alternative type of biomolecules, naturally present in a wide variety of organisms, with the capacity to overcome the current microorganism resistance threat. Here, we reviewed our recent efforts to develop a new library of non-rationally produced AMPs that relies on bacterial genome inherent diversity and compared it with rationally designed libraries. Our approach is based on a four-stage workflow process that incorporates the interplay of recent developments in four major emerging technologies artificial intelligence, molecular dynamics, surface-display in microorganisms, and microfluidics. Implementing this framework is challenging because to obtain reliable results, the in silico algorithms to search for candidate AMPs need to overcome issues of the state-of-the-art approaches that limit the possibilities for multi-space data distribution analyses in extremely large databases. We expect to tackle this challenge by using a recently developed classification algorithm based on deep learning models that rely on convolutional layers and gated recurrent units. This will be complemented by carefully tailored molecular dynamics simulations to elucidate specific interactions with lipid bilayers. Candidate AMPs will be recombinantly-expressed on the surface of microorganisms for further screening via different droplet-based microfluidic-based strategies to identify AMPs with the desired lytic abilities.     Neuropeptide Y (NPY) is involved in the coordination of bone mass and adiposity. However, multiple NPY sources exist and their individual contribution to the skeleton and adiposity not known. The objectives of our study were to evaluate the effects of peripheral mesenchymal derived NPY to the skeleton and adiposity and to compare them to the global NPY

  • This study extended research on syndemics for women with mental disorders by including self-reported mental and physical health conditions. Syndemics explain complex relationships among co-occurring conditions, and the social circumstances that influence their overlap. Data were from the baseline assessment of a randomized trial of Healthy Home, a nursing home-visit intervention for women with children. 172 adult women who were in mental health or substance use treatment completed measures (in Spanish or English) of anxiety, depression, violence during adulthood, physical health, and cigarette use. Structural Equation Modeling was used to evaluate a single-factor syndemic, and to test the relationships of theoretical predictors of the syndemic income, number of children, women's abuse during childhood, mental health stigma, social support, and stress. Results supported a single factor syndemic model that explained variation in mental health, physical health, and violence during adulthood. Stress, β = .45, p less then .001, and stigma, β = .22, p = .007, were related to the syndemic factor. There was evidence that self-reported mental and physical health share covariation, which suggested that integrated services for women with mental disorders may have synergistic effects on health. Findings suggest the need to develop and test interventions that address stress and stigma as a means of reducing health disparities for women with mental disorders.
    The initial assessment of late gadolinium enhancement (LGE) on cardiac magnetic resonance imaging (CMR) reflects cardiac damage and is an important prognostic factor in patients with acute ST-elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI). N-Terminal prohormone of brain natriuretic peptide (NT-proBNP) is released following cardiomyocytes injury. However, the relationship between NT-proBNP levels, myocardial damage and clinical outcomes after STEMI has not been well defined.

    Plasma levels of NT-proBNP, troponin I and creatinine kinase (CK) were assessed in 75 patients with STEMI. Echocardiography and CMR were performed prior to hospital discharge. Cardiac damage was quantified using peak biomarker levels and LGE. Patients were followed for a median of 975 days (IQR 823-1098 days) for major adverse cardiac events (****) (all-cause mortality, recurrent myocardial infraction, unplanned recurrent revascularization and recurrent hospitalization for heart failure).

    Plasma levels of NT-proBNP increased following STEMI to peak at 24 hours. The dynamic changes in plasma NT-proBNP were similar to those noted with troponin I and its delayed peak but not those observed with plasma CK levels.     Consistent medical knowledge acquisition while caring for the critically ill can be challenging for learners and educators in the pediatric intensive care unit (PICU), a unit often distinguished by fluctuating acuity and severity. We implemented a standardized didactic curriculum for PICU residents to facilitate their acquisition and retention of knowledge in core PICU topics.

    We developed a comprehensive standardized curriculum for PGY 2-PGY 4 PICU pediatric and internal medicine-pediatric residents. Thirteen core topics were administered as 30-minute didactic sessions during the rotation, using either PowerPoint slides or a dry-erase board. Residents were tested to assess knowledge acquisition and retention.

    Seventy-eight residents participated, 86% of whom completed posttests. Seventeen percent completed follow-up tests. Of the learners who participated, 60 (77%) completed pretests and posttests, indicating their confidence level each time. The pretest mean was 55% (

    Serious complications associated with first-trimester abortions are rare. The US mortality rate for these procedures is 0.7 per 100,000, primarily due to infection and hemorrhage. While complications are unlikely to arise during training, residents must be prepared to manage them in practice. To address this, we developed a 2-hour simulation-based abortion complication curriculum for OB/GYN resident learners.

    OB/GYN residents participated in three sessions a case-based didactic reviewing institutional aspiration abortion practice and preop preparation; an in-vivo aspiration abortion hemorrhage simulation; and an interdepartmental postabortal sepsis simulation. Participants completed surveys before and after their participation that evaluated clinical knowledge, and self-rated competence in, and preparedness for, managing first-trimester abortion complications.

N-Terminal prohormone of brain natriuretic peptide (NT-proBNP) is released following cardiomyocytes injury. However, the relationship between NT-proBNP levels, myocardial damage and clinical outcomes after STEMI has not been well defined. Plasma levels of NT-proBNP, troponin I and creatinine kinase (CK) were assessed in 75 patients with STEMI. Echocardiography and CMR were performed prior to hospital discharge. Cardiac damage was quantified using peak biomarker levels and LGE. Patients were followed for a median of 975 days (IQR 823-1098 days) for major adverse cardiac events (MACE) (all-cause mortality, recurrent myocardial infraction, unplanned recurrent revascularization and recurrent hospitalization for heart failure). Plasma levels of NT-proBNP increased following STEMI to peak at 24 hours. The dynamic changes in plasma NT-proBNP were similar to those noted with troponin I and its delayed peak but not those observed with plasma CK levels. Peak NT-proBNP levels correlated positively with indices of myocardial damage such as peak troponin I (R =0.38, <0.001), peak CK (R =0.22, = 0.01) and LGE examination (R = 0.46, <0.001). Peak plasma level of NT- proBNP was strongly predictive of MACE during the follow-up period. Peak levels of NT-proBNP following STEMI are predictive of the extent of myocardial damage and clinical outcomes. Consistent medical knowledge acquisition while caring for the critically ill can be challenging for learners and educators in the pediatric intensive care unit (PICU), a unit often distinguished by fluctuating acuity and severity. We implemented a standardized didactic curriculum for PICU residents to facilitate their acquisition and retention of knowledge in core PICU topics. We developed a comprehensive standardized curriculum for PGY 2-PGY 4 PICU pediatric and internal medicine-pediatric residents. Thirteen core topics were administered as 30-minute didactic sessions during the rotation, using either PowerPoint slides or a dry-erase board. Residents were tested to assess knowledge acquisition and retention. Seventy-eight residents participated, 86% of whom completed posttests. Seventeen percent completed follow-up tests. Of the learners who participated, 60 (77%) completed pretests and posttests, indicating their confidence level each time. The pretest mean was 55% ( = 14.4%), and the posttest mean was 64% ( = 15.6%). Serious complications associated with first-trimester abortions are rare. The US mortality rate for these procedures is 0.7 per 100,000, primarily due to infection and hemorrhage. While complications are unlikely to arise during training, residents must be prepared to manage them in practice. To address this, we developed a 2-hour simulation-based abortion complication curriculum for OB/GYN resident learners. OB/GYN residents participated in three sessions a case-based didactic reviewing institutional aspiration abortion practice and preop preparation; an in-vivo aspiration abortion hemorrhage simulation; and an interdepartmental postabortal sepsis simulation. Participants completed surveys before and after their participation that evaluated clinical knowledge, and self-rated competence in, and preparedness for, managing first-trimester abortion complications.   • The use of multiple medications and altered pharmacokinetics/pharmacodynamics may lead to drug-related problems in members of the older population. The aim of this study is to evaluate the prevalence of, and factors related to, drug-related problems in older urban-living Thai people.

    We conducted a cross-sectional study involving 466 participants (aged ≥65 years) whose first-time health screening at the Geriatric Excellence Center, King Chulalongkorn Memorial Hospital, Bangkok was between May and October 2019. Participants were interviewed and assessed for drug-related problems by clinical pharmacists.

    In total, 54.5% (254) of the participants were aged 65-69 years and 77.0% (359) of the participants were women. Of the participants, 56.7% had three or more health conditions such as hyperlipidemia (62%), hypertension (46%), and cataract (18%). Fifty-five percent of the participants took five or more health products (polypharmacy) and 16% took ten or more products on a regular basis. Of the 2633 products alence of drug-related problems in urban-living older people at King Chulalongkorn Memorial Hospital in Bangkok was high. Polypharmacy and multiple comorbidities were significantly related to drug-related problems. To decrease the number of drug-related problems, pharmacists should collaborate with healthcare teams and suggest how to correctly reduce the number of health products being consumed by older people.
    Limited data are available linking breakfast consumption to Heart Burn Syndrome (HBS). This study was done to investigate to find whether breakfast consumption is associated with HBS. This cross-sectional study was done to investigate the association between breakfast consumption and HBS among Iranian adults.

    This cross-sectional study was performed among 4763 general adults of Isfahan, Iran. Participants' patterns of breakfast eating were assessed by asking two questions from them. How often do you eat breakfast in a week?" Participants were able to respond as "never or 1day/wk", "2-4days/wk", "5-6days/wk", "every day". HBS was defined as the presence of HBS at sometimes, often or always using a Persian version of validated self-administered modified ROME III questionnaire.

    Totally, 4763 patients with HBS completed this cross-sectional study, where about 32.4% of them intake breakfast less than one time per week. After controlling for potential confounders, participants who consumed breakfast every day had a 43% lower risk for having HBS as compared with those who had breakfast ≤ 1 times/wk (OR 0.57; 95% CI 0.41-0.80). A significant inverse relationship was found between breakfast consumption and frequent than scare HBS (OR 0.57; 95% CI 0.40-0.77) among the whole population, not in patients with HBS. No significant association was observed between breakfast intake and severity of HBS (OR 0.56; 95% CI 0.31-1.04).

    We found an inverse association between frequency of breakfast consumption and odds of HBS as well as the frequency of HBS among the adult population. Prospective studies are required to confirm these findings.

We sought to present an updated comprehensive review of the available literature on HIV related to atherosclerosis and cardiovascular risk.In this study, we present a techno-economic analysis for integrating an electrochemical reactor into a lignocellulosic biorefinery for the purpose of converting biorefinery lignin to higher-value industrial chemicals with co-generation of hydrogen. We consider how the electrochemical reactor impacts the manufacturing costs for producing biofuel and determine a break-even value for the lignin oxidation product stream, which is the minimum lignin conversion product stream value that renders the cost to produce biofuel the same as in the typical biorefinery concept. We conclude that at low extents of lignin conversion, the break-even product stream value is likely too high for the process to be feasible. However, at higher extents of lignin conversion, the break-even product stream value may be between $1.00 and $2.00/kg, depending on capital cost and other manufacturing costs like depreciation. Moreover, lipAB showed increased resistance to pH and temperature changes, and lipAB retained stable catalytic properties after treatment with metal ions, organic solvents, and surfactants, namely Mg2+, methanol, and Triton-100X. Besides, using recombinant lipase lipAB as catalysts, biodiesel was synthesized using rapeseed oil under 50 °C for 72 h with a yield of 90.23%.     Literature on prevalence of symptomatic internal carotid artery stenosis is scarce and heterogeneous. Prevalence may have decreased in recent years due to improved management of cardiovascular risk factors. We aim to estimate current prevalence and identify risk factors of ipsilateral internal carotid artery stenosis in patients with recent hemispheric transient ischaemic attack or ischaemic stroke in the Netherlands.

    We included consecutive adult patients admitted to two large hospitals in the Netherlands in 2014 who suffered from amaurosis fugax, retinal ischaemia, transient ischaemic attack or ischaemic stroke in the vessel territory of the internal carotid artery. Primary outcome was presence of ipsilateral internal carotid artery stenosis (degree subdivided following NASCET criteria), as assessed with duplex ultrasonography, computed tomography angiography and/or magnetic resonance angiography. We used univariable and multivariable logistic regression to identify risk factors for the presence of a 50rs for symptomatic internal carotid artery stenosis.
    The prevalence of internal carotid artery stenosis seems to be lower in patients with recent transient ischaemic attack or ischaemic stroke than stated in previous studies. We found that higher age, male sex, White ethnicity, retinal ischaemia and current smoking were important risk factors for symptomatic internal carotid artery stenosis.
    Deficits of emotion recognition after ischemic stroke are often overlooked by clinicians, and are mostly not spontaneously reported by patients. However, impaired emotion recognition after stroke negatively affects the ability to return to work and the quality of life. It is still unknown how often impairments of emotion recognition occur shortly after ischemic stroke. We aimed to estimate the occurrence of impaired emotion recognition after ischemic stroke and to characterise these patients with impaired emotion recognition.

    Two hundred thirty patients were included, derived from a prospective study of cognitive recovery. Five weeks after ischemic stroke a neuropsychological assessment was performed, including an emotion recognition task (i.e. Ekman 60-faces test). Emotion recognition was regarded as impaired if the total score was below the fifth percentile for a large independent reference sample.

The aim of this controlled case analysis was to study patient characteristics, stroke etiologies, and risk factors in human immunodeficiency virus-positive patients in a medical system with easy access to antiretroviral therapies.

    We conducted a retrospective, observational study of human immunodeficiency virus-positive patients treated in our stroke unit and outpatient clinic in Germany between 2012 and 2018. A control group of all patients treated for acute ischemic stroke in 2018 was used to elicit possible differences in stroke localization, etiology, and distribution of risk factors.

    Out of 3615 patients with an acute ischemic stroke, 24 (0.7%) were newly or previously diagnosed as human immunodeficiency virus-positive. Strokes in this cohort were caused by large-vessel disease (37.5%), small-vessel disease (20.8%), cryptogenic-embolism (20.8%), vasculitis (16.7%), and cardio-embolism (4.2%). Larng the hypothesis that as antiretroviral therapy increases the life expectancy of people living with HIV/AIDS, they will be increasingly affected by cardiovascular disease. Human immunodeficiency virus-related cerebral vasculitis was associated with high mortality (75%).
    Atrial fibrillation is an important risk factor for ischemic stroke, and is associated with an increased risk of poor outcome after ischemic stroke. Endovascular thrombectomy is safe and effective in acute ischemic stroke patients with large vessel occlusion of the anterior circulation. This meta-analysis aims to investigate whether there is an interaction between atrial fibrillation and treatment effect of endovascular thrombectomy, and secondarily whether atrial fibrillation is associated with worse outcome in patients with ischemic stroke due to large vessel occlusion.

    Individual patient data were from six of the recent randomised clinical trials (MR CLEAN, EXTEND-IA, REVASCAT, SWIFT PRIME, ESCAPE, PISTE) in which endovascular thrombectomy plus standard care was compared to standard care alone. Strokes in this cohort were caused by large-vessel disease (37.5%), small-vessel disease (20.8%), cryptogenic-embolism (20.8%), vasculitis (16.7%), and cardio-embolism (4.2%). Larng the hypothesis that as antiretroviral therapy increases the life expectancy of people living with HIV/AIDS, they will be increasingly affected by cardiovascular disease. Human immunodeficiency virus-related cerebral vasculitis was associated with high mortality (75%). Atrial fibrillation is an important risk factor for ischemic stroke, and is associated with an increased risk of poor outcome after ischemic stroke. Endovascular thrombectomy is safe and effective in acute ischemic stroke patients with large vessel occlusion of the anterior circulation. This meta-analysis aims to investigate whether there is an interaction between atrial fibrillation and treatment effect of endovascular thrombectomy, and secondarily whether atrial fibrillation is associated with worse outcome in patients with ischemic stroke due to large vessel occlusion. Individual patient data were from six of the recent randomised clinical trials (MR CLEAN, EXTEND-IA, REVASCAT, SWIFT PRIME, ESCAPE, PISTE) in which endovascular thrombectomy plus standard care was compared to standard care alone. Primary outcome measure was the shift on the modified Rankin scale (mRS) at 90 days. Secondary outcomes were functional independence (mRS 0-2) at 90 days, National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale score at 24 h, symptomatic intracranial hemorrhage and mortality at 90 days.
